A plastic intraoral device for the collection of human parotid saliva

A plastic intraoral (IO) cup developed to facilitate collection of human parotid saliva was tested on two groups of patients. Samples collected in both IO and tubed cups exhibited no significant differences in lysozyme or lactoperoxidase activity, levels of total protein or secretory IgA, or in flow rates. Results suggest that the IO cup provides a simple, reliable method for collecting parotid saliva.

Night medication in rheumatoid arthritis: II. Combined therapy with indomethacin and diazepam

Seventeen of eighteen patients hospitalized for active rheumatoid arthritis completed a three-day randomized, double-blind comparison of 100 mg indomethacin, 100 mg indomethacin with 10 mg diazepam and matching placebo as night medication. The results showed a consistent pattern in the four functions measured--pain, morning stiffness, sleep score and patient preference. In each, indomethacin proved superior to placebo and the combined therapy better than indomethacin alone. From this it has been concluded that the combination of indomethacin and diazepam should now be considered the treatment of choice for maximum control of night pain and morning stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis.

Mariner 9 michelson interferometer

The Michelson interferometer on Mariner 9 measures the thermal emission spectrum of Mars between 200 cm(-1) and 2000 cm(-1) (between 5 microm and 50 microm) with a spectral resolution of 2.4 cm(-1) in the apodized mode. A noise equivalent radiance of 0.5 x 10(-7) W cm(-2) sr(-1)/cm(-1) is deduced from data recorded in orbit around Mars. The Mariner interferometer deviates in design from the Nimbus 3 and 4 interferometers in several areas, notably, by a cesium iodide beam splitter and certain aspects of the digital information processing. Special attention has been given to the problem of external vibration. The instrument performance is demonstrated by calibration data and samples of Mars spectra.
