Abstract
This prospective randomized intervention investigated whether training on a balance board could reduce the amount of traumatic injuries of the lower extremities in female soccer players. A total of 221 female soccer players from 13 different teams playing in the second and third Swedish divisions volunteered to participate in the study. Seven teams (n = 121) were randomized to an intervention group and six teams (n = 100) to a control group and were followed during one outdoor season (April-October). Before and after the season muscle flexibility and balance/postural sway of the lower extremities were measured in the players. There were no significant differences in age, height, weight, muscle flexibility and balance/postural sway of the lower extremities between the intervention and the control group. During the season the players in the intervention group performed a special training program consisting of 10-15 min of balance board training in addition to their standard soccer practice and games. After a 37% drop-out the intervention group consisted of 62 players and the control group of 78 players. The results showed no significant differences between the groups with respect either to the number, incidence, or type of traumatic injuries of the lower extremities. The incidence rate of "major" injuries was higher in the intervention group than in the control group. Four of five anterior cruciate ligament injuries occurred in the intervention group, which means that we could not prevent severe knee injuries in female soccer players with balance board training. However, among the players who had been injured during the 3-month period prior to this investigation there were significantly more players from the control group than from the intervention group who sustained new injuries during the study period.

Abstract
Rehabilitation after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction has focused over the past decade on closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises due to presumably less strain on the graft than with isokinetic open kinetic chain exercises (OKC); however, recent reports suggest that there are only minor differences in ACL strain values between some CKC and OKC exercises. We studied anterior knee laxity, thigh muscle torque, and return to preinjury sports level in 44 patients with unilateral ACL; group 1 carried out quadriceps strengthening only with CKC while group 2 trained with CKC plus OKC exercises starting from week 6 after surgery. Anterior knee laxity was determined with a KT-1000 arthrometer; isokinetic concentric and eccentric quadriceps and hamstring muscle torque were studied with a Kin-Com dynamometer before and 6 months after surgery. At an average of 31 months after surgery the patients answered a questionnaire regarding their current knee function and physical activity/sports to determine the extent and timing of their recovery. No significant differences in anterior knee laxity were noted between the groups 6 months postsurgery. Patients in group 2 increased their quadriceps torque significantly more than those in group 1, but no differences were found in hamstring torque between the groups. A significantly higher number of patients in group 2 (n = 12) than in group 1 (n = 5) returned to sports at the same level as before the injury (P < 0.05). Patients from group 2 who returned to sports at the same level did so 2 months earlier than those in group 1. Thus the addition of OKC quadriceps training after ACL reconstruction results in a significantly better improvement in quadriceps torque without reducing knee joint stability at 6 months and also leads to a significantly higher number of athletes returning to their previous activity earlier and at the same level as before injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Benign melanosis of the lip represents a cosmetic problem for many of those who are afflicted. It responds well to therapy with Q-switched lasers. The value of previous studies has been limited by small numbers of cases or short follow-up times. PATIENTS/METHODS In a retrospective study 9 patients were treated by the Q-switched ruby laser (694 nm, pulse duration 25-40 ns, spot size 4 mm, energy density 10 J/cm2) in the period from 5/94 to 10/99. The benignity of the lip melanosis was determined dermatoscopically. In one case, the diagnosis was also confirmed histologically by a punch biopsy. The follow-up time was between 6 months and 5 1/2 years. RESULTS In 3 cases a complete clearance of the melanosis was achieved after one session, while in 6 patients a second treatment was required. There were no recurrences. Scars or pigment alterations were likewise not observed. CONCLUSIONS The treatment of benign melanosis of the lip with the Q-switched ruby laser is an elegant and safe method with excellent cosmetic results.

Abstract
Haem oxygenase (HO) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the degradation of haem. In addition to its obvious role in iron metabolism, a series of findings indicate an important role for HO in cellular protection against oxidative stress. This effect might be of particular importance during wound healing and also in inflammatory disease. Therefore we determined the expression of the two HO isoenzymes, HO-1 and HO-2, during the healing process of full-thickness excisional wounds in mice. We show a remarkable induction of HO-1 mRNA and protein expression within three days after skin injury. After completion of wound healing, HO-1 expression declined to basal levels. By contrast, expression of HO-2 was not significantly modulated by skin injury. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry revealed high HO-1 expression in inflammatory cells of the granulation tissue and in keratinocytes of the hyperproliferative epithelium. A strong overexpression of HO-1 was also observed in the skin of patients suffering from the inflammatory skin disease psoriasis. In addition, HO-2 mRNA levels were increased in the skin of psoriatic patients. Similar to wounded skin, inflammatory cells and keratinocytes of the hyperthickened epidermis were the major producers of HO-1 in psoriatic skin. In vitro studies with cultured keratinocytes revealed a potential role for reactive oxygen species (ROS), but not for growth factors and pro-inflammatory cytokines, as inducers of HO-1 expression in inflamed skin. Our findings suggest a novel role for HO in wound healing and inflammatory skin disease, where it might be involved in haem degradation and in the protection of cells from the toxic effects of ROS.

Abstract
Endostatin is a cleavage product of collagen XVIII that strongly inhibits tumor angiogenesis. To determine if endostatin affects other angiogenic processes, we generated full-thickness excisional wounds on the back of mice that were systemically treated with recombinant murine endostatin. No macroscopic abnormalities of the wound healing process were observed. Histological analysis revealed normal wound contraction and re-epithelialization, but a slight reduction in granulation tissue formation and reduced matrix deposition at the wound edge. The blood vessel density in the wounds of endostatin-treated mice was not affected. However, ultrastructural analysis demonstrated severe abnormalities in blood vessel maturation. The wound vessels in the endostatin-treated mice were narrowed or closed with an irregular luminal surface, resulting in a severe reduction in the number of functional vessels and extravasation of erythrocytes. Endostatin treatment did not affect the expression level and localization of collagen XVIII mRNA and protein. Furthermore, the angiogenesis regulators vascular endothelial growth factor, angiopoietin-1, and angiopoietin-2 were normally expressed in the wounds of endostatin-treated mice. However, expression of the major wound matrix proteins fibronectin and collagens I and III was significantly reduced. This reduction is likely to explain the reduced density of the wound matrix. Our results demonstrate that endostatin treatment reduces the number of functional blood vessels and the matrix density in the granulation tissue, but does not significantly affect the overall wound healing process.

Abstract
Reepithelialization and granulation tissue formation during cutaneous wound repair are mediated by a wide variety of growth and differentiation factors. Recent studies from our laboratory provided evidence for an important role of keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) in the repair of the injured epithelium and for a novel function of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily member activin in granulation tissue formation. KGF is weakly expressed in human skin, but is strongly upregulated in dermal fibroblasts after skin injury. Its binding to a transmembrane receptor on keratinocytes induces proliferation and migration of these cells. Furthermore, KGF has been shown to protect epithelial cells from the toxic effects of reactive oxygen species. We have identified a series of KGF-regulated genes that are likely to play a role in these processes. In addition to KGF, activin seems to be a novel player in wound healing. Activin expression is hardly detectable in nonwounded skin, but this factor is highly expressed in redifferentiating keratinocytes of the hyperproliferative wound epithelium as well as in cells of the granulation tissue. To gain insight into the role of activin in wound repair, we generated transgenic mice that overexpress activin in basal keratinocytes of the epidermis. These mice were characterized by a hyperthickened epidermis and by dermal fibrosis. Most importantly, overexpression of activin strongly enhanced the process of granulation tissue formation, demonstrating a novel and important role of activin in cutaneous wound repair.

Abstract
Plant pathogenic fungi differentiate a highly specialized infection cell called an appressorium to infect their hosts. Appressorium formation is induced by specific physical or chemical cues provided by the host plant. Several components of signal transduction pathways have been identified that are involved in infection-related morphogenesis and virulence or pathogenicity. In this review we summarize current knowledge on appressorium differentiation and function, and discuss aspects of initial stages of fungal development in the plant.

Abstract
View-based theories of the mental representation of spatial information claim that distinct views experienced during learning are represented separately in memory. Networks of such views are considered to be the basis for spatial navigation. Two experiments (N = 56) investigated the role of observer perspective on the resulting mental representation when learning a spatial configuration on the computer. Learning in route perspective, which induced the impression of passive navigation through the configuration, was compared with a survey perspective, which consisted of an overview of the whole configuration from one point of view. In accordance with view-based theories, previously seen views could be identified faster and with less error than new views for both perspectives during learning. Recoding the information into the alternative perspective was also possible. If participants were asked to integrate distinct route views into a survey view during learning, the flexibility of the resulting mental representation was greatly increased. This indicates that conscious processes such as imagery play an important role in the integration of spatial knowledge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growth hormone therapy after myocardial infarction improves cardiac function and survival in animals. Beneficial effects in humans are reported from studies where patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy were treated with growth hormone. We have studied the role of the endogenous growth hormone system in myocardial infarction. METHODS AND RESULTS Fifty-two consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction were studied during the first 5 days and at follow-up 6 and 12 weeks later. The time from chest pain onset was used in the analyses. The mean growth hormone level within the first 6 h was nearly three times higher (1.1 +/- 0.2 microg. l(-1)) than on the third day (0.4 +/- 0.05 microg. l(-1), P < 0.0002). It remained higher in patients with higher levels of cardiac enzymes, impaired left ventricular function and intense inflammatory response. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) declined slowly but remained within the normal range throughout the whole study period. Patients who died within 2 years had higher levels of growth hormone and lower levels of IGF-1, indicating growth hormone resistance. Endogenous levels of growth hormone or IGF-1 did not correlate with improvement in left ventricular function at 6 weeks. CONCLUSIONS The growth hormone axis is stimulated early in acute myocardial infarction, particularly in patients with more severe cardiac damage. Whether treatment with growth hormone can be beneficial for patients with heart failure after myocardial infarction remains to be investigated.

Abstract
beta 1 integrins are ubiquitously expressed receptors that mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. To analyze the function of beta1 integrin in skin we generated mice with a keratinocyte-restricted deletion of the beta 1 integrin gene using the cre-loxP system. Mutant mice developed severe hair loss due to a reduced proliferation of hair matrix cells and severe hair follicle abnormalities. Eventually, the malformed hair follicles were removed by infiltrating macrophages. The epidermis of the back skin became hyperthickened, the basal keratinocytes showed reduced expression of alpha 6 beta 4 integrin, and the number of hemidesmosomes decreased. Basement membrane components were atypically deposited and, at least in the case of laminin-5, improperly processed, leading to disruption of the basement membrane and blister formation at the dermal-epidermal junction. In contrast, the integrity of the basement membrane surrounding the beta 1-deficient hair follicle was not affected. Finally, the dermis became fibrotic. These results demonstrate an important role of beta 1 integrins in hair follicle morphogenesis, in the processing of basement membrane components, in the maintenance of some, but not all basement membranes, in keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation, and in the formation and/or maintenance of hemidesmosomes.

Abstract
We have further refined the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) pattern on the human chromosomal region 8p12-p21 using 15 well characterised microsatellite markers in a panel of 50 breast carcinomas. The allelic loss pattern of these tumours suggests the presence of five commonly deleted regions on 8p12-p21. The most commonly deleted region was located between markers D8S1734 and D81989, spanning a distance of approximately 3 cM and reaching 56% LOH at locus NEFL. LOH at 8p12-p21 was significantly correlated with large tumour size (T>5 cm). Patients with the age at diagnosis of breast cancer between 45 and 55 years showed significantly more LOH than patients older than 55 years or younger than 45 years. No correlation was observed between 8p12-p21 alterations and histological tumour type, grade and the presence of lymph node metastases.

Abstract
Heterodimeric reverse transcriptase (RT) alphabeta from Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) possesses an asymmetric subunit organization with the polymerase and RNase H active sites localized in the alpha subunit. To determine whether homodimeric RSV RTs alpha (63 kDa) or beta (95 kDa) assume alpha subunit organization similar to that of the heterodimer, an essential aspartic acid residue was mutated in the active site of either the polymerase (Asp181 > Asn) or the RNase H (Asp505 > Asn). Homodimeric alpha or beta RT consisting of one wild-type and one mutated subunit exhibit polymerase or RNase H activity, respectively, whereas the corresponding doubly mutated enzymes are inactive, indicating that the catalytic sites of the polymerase and RNase H domains are formed by only one subunit of the homodimer.

Abstract
Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) and its receptor are involved in various types of epithelial repair processes. To gain insight into the molecular mechanisms of KGF action in the healing skin wound, we searched for genes which are regulated by this factor in cultured keratinocytes. Using the PCR-select technology we constructed a subtractive cDNA library. One of the KGF-regulated genes that we identified was shown to encode caveolin-1, a major component of caveolar membranes. Caveolin-1 is involved in a wide variety of cellular processes, particularly in the regulation of various signal transduction pathways. Caveolin-1 mRNA levels increased in cultured keratinocytes after KGF treatment. By in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry we found a strong expression of caveolin-1 in the KGF-responsive basal keratinocytes of the epidermis and the hyperproliferative epithelium of the wound as well as in endothelial cells and in other cells of the granulation tissue. In 13-day wounds expression of caveolin-1 mRNA was restricted to the regenerated dermis. In addition to caveolin-1, the mRNA expression of caveolin-2, a second member of the caveolin family, was also induced in keratinocytes after stimulation with KGF but also with other growth factors and cytokines. In contrast to caveolin-1, caveolin-2 protein was expressed in all layers of the normal epidermis and in the suprabasal layers of the hyperproliferative wound epithelium. These results demonstrate a differential expression of caveolin-1 and -2 in proliferating versus differentiating keratinocytes.

Abstract
Exogenous application of neurotrophic growth factors has emerged as a new and particularly promising approach not only to promote functional recovery after acute brain injury but also to protect neurons against the immediate effect of the injury. Among the various growth factors and cytokines studied so far, the neuroprotective and neurotrophic profile of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is the best documented. Using an animal model of acute excitotoxic brain injury, we report here that the neuroprotective action of bFGF, which is now being tested in stroke patients, depends on the induction of activin A, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. Our evidence for this previously unknown mechanism of action of bFGF is that bFGF strongly enhanced lesion-associated induction of activin A; in the presence of the activin-neutralizing protein follistatin, bFGF was no longer capable of rescuing neurons from excitotoxic death; and recombinant activin A exerted a neuroprotective effect by itself. Our data indicate that the development of substances influencing activin expression or receptor binding should offer new ways to fight neuronal loss in ischemic and traumatic brain injury.

Abstract
Many different laser systems are used in dermatology. To wisely choose the correct laser for a given problem, one must be aware of both the spectrum of disorders for which each laser is suited and the potential side effects. We compare the side effect and complication profiles of the common laser systems pointing out their possibilities and limitations. Typical treatment errors will be pointed out. Dermatological training, extensive experience in laser therapy and compliance with quality guidelines are prerequisites for safe and successful treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Due to its delicate location near the eye and the high recurrence rate, the therapy of xanthelasma palpebrarum is a difficult surgical task. Besides chemical, physical, and surgical procedures, various laser systems have been used to treat these lesions (argon laser, pulsed dye laser, and CO2 laser). This study was designed to critically evaluate the use of the ultrapulsed CO2 laser for the treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS We report about the standardized treatment of 23 patients (52 periorbital xanthelasmas) and the results obtained after one treatment with a new generation, ultrapulsed CO2 laser (COHERENT Ultrapulse 5000C, Palo Alto, CA; 250-500 mJ; 600-900 microsec; 10,600 nm). The followup time was 10 months. RESULTS All lesions could be removed completely with a single laser treatment. As for side effects, only transient pigmental changes (4% hyperpigmentations, 13% hypopigmentations) and no visible scarring was observed. Three patients (13%) developed a recurrence of xanthelasma. CONCLUSIONS The ultrapulsed CO2 laser is an effective and safe therapeutic alternative to the hitherto described approaches.

Abstract
Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) transmit their signals through four transmembrane receptors that are designated FGFR1-4. Alternative splicing in the extracellular region of FGFR1-3 generates receptor variants with different ligand binding affinities. Thus two types of transmembrane receptors (IIIb and IIIc isoforms) have been identified for FGFR2 and FGFR3, and the existence of analogous variants has been postulated for FGFR1 based on its genomic structure. However, only a single full-length transmembrane FGFR1 variant (FGFR1-IIIc) has been identified so far. Here we describe the cloning of a full-length cDNA encoding FGFR1-IIIb from a mouse skin wound cDNA library. This receptor isoform was expressed at the highest levels in a subset of sebaceous glands of the skin and in neurons of the hippocampus and the cerebellum. FGFR1-IIIb was expressed in L6 rat skeletal muscle myoblasts and used in cross-linking and receptor binding studies. FGF-1 was found to bind the receptor with high affinity, whereas FGF-2, -10, and -7 bound with significantly lower affinities. Despite their apparently similar but low affinities, FGF-10 but not FGF-7 induced the activation of p44/42 mitogen-activated protein kinase in FGFR1-IIIb-expressing L6 myoblasts and stimulated mitogenesis in these cells, demonstrating that this new receptor variant is a functional transmembrane receptor for FGF-10.

Abstract
Astroglial cells contribute to neuronal maintenance and function in the normal and diseased brain. Gap junctions formed predominantly by connexin43 (cx43) provide important pathways to coordinate astroglial responses. We have previously shown that fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2, which occurs ubiquitously in the CNS, downregulates gap junction communication in cortical and striatal, but not in mesencephalic astroglial cells in vitro (Reuss et al. Glia 22:19-30, 1998). Other members of the FGF family expressed in the CNS include FGF-5 and FGF-9. We show that both FGF-5 and FGF-9, like FGF-2, downregulate astroglial gap junctions and functional coupling. However, their effects are strikingly different from different brain regions, with regard to astroglial cells. FGF-5 specifically affects mesencephalic astroglial cells without changing coupling of cortical and striatal astroglia, while FGF-9 reduces gap junctional coupling in astroglia from all three brain regions. Both cx43 mRNA and protein levels as well as functional coupling assessed by dye spreading are affected. To clarify whether brain region-specific effects of FGFs on astroglial coupling are due to differential expression of FGF receptors (FGFR), we monitored expression of the four known FGFR mRNAs in astroglial cultures by RT-PCR. Irrespective of their regional origin, astroglial cells express mRNAs for FGFR-2 and FGFR-3. In summary, our results provide evidence for an important role of FGF-2, -5, and -9 in a distinct, CNS region-specific regulation mechanism of astroglial gap junction communication. The molecular basis underlying the regionally distinct responsiveness of astrocytes to different FGFs may be sought beyond distinct FGFR expression.

Abstract
Glucocorticoids exert a deleterious effect on the wound healing process, which has been suggested to result from the anti-inflammatory action of these steroids. In addition, recent studies have demonstrated that glucocorticoids regulate the expression of various genes at the wound site which are likely to encode key players in the wound repair process. Using a murine full-thickness excisional wound healing model, we analyzed the effect of dexamethasone on the expression of various cytokines, growth factors, enzymes, and extracellular matrix molecules in normal and wounded skin. We demonstrate that the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 alpha and -beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, keratinocyte growth factor, transforming growth factors beta 1, beta 2, and beta 3 and their receptors, platelet-derived growth factors and their receptors, tenascin-C, stromelysin-2, macrophage metalloelastase, and enzymes involved in the generation of nitric oxide are targets of glucocorticoid action in wounded skin. These results indicate that anti-inflammatory steroids inhibit wound repair at least in part by influencing the expression of these key regulatory molecules.

Abstract
The genes encoding the alpha (63-kDa) and beta (95-kDa) subunits of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) reverse transcriptase (RT) or the entire Pol polypeptide (99 kDa) were mutated in the conserved aspartic acid residue Asp 181 of the polymerase active site (YMDD) or in the conserved Asp 505 residue of the RNase H active site. We have analyzed heterodimeric recombinant RSV alphabeta and alphaPol RTs within which one subunit was selectively mutated. When alphabeta heterodimers contained the Asp 181-->Asn mutation in their beta subunits, about 42% of the wild-type polymerase activity was detected, whereas when the heterodimers contained the same mutation in their alpha subunits, only 7.5% of the wild-type polymerase activity was detected. Similar results were obtained when the conserved Asp 505 residue of the RNase H active site was mutated to Asn. RNase H activity was clearly detectable in alphabeta heterodimers mutated in the beta subunit but was lost when the mutation was present in the alpha subunit. In summary, our data imply that the polymerase and RNase H active sites are located in the alpha subunit of the heterodimeric RSV RT alphabeta.

Abstract
The hnRNP K protein is among the major hnRNA-binding proteins with a strong preference for cytidine-rich sequences. We have cloned a Drosophila hnRNP protein closely related to this vertebrate protein. The protein first identified by the monoclonal antibody Q18 is encoded by a gene located in 57A on polytene chromosomes and has been consequently named Hrb57A. The amino acid sequence of the Hrb57A KH domains and their overall organisation in the protein are remarkably similar to the vertebrate proteins. As the hnRNP K in vertebrates the M(r) 55 000 Drosophila Hrb57A/Q18 protein strongly binds to poly(C) in vitro and is ubiquitously present in nuclei active in transcription. On polytene chromosomes it is found in many puffs and minipuffs. Hrb57A/Q18 specifically coprecipitates four other proteins: Hrb87F/P11 a Drosophila hnRNP A1 homologue, the hnRNA-binding protein S5, the RNA recognition motif-containing protein NonA and the RNA-binding zinc finger-containing protein on ecdysone puffs PEP/X4.

Abstract
Hepatocyte growth-factor (HGF) is a potent, widely produced, pleiotropic mediator of mesenchymal-epithelial interaction. In a study of changes in gene expression initiated by HGF in Balb/MK keratinocytes, we observed the induction of Neu-differentiation factor (NDF) mRNA (also known as heregulin, or HRG). Further characterization of the regulation of NDF expression in Balb/MK keratinocytes revealed potent induction by keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF), but not by HGF/NK2, an alternative HGF isoform with motogenic but not mitogenic or morphogenic activities. Sustained treatment (8 h) of Balb/MK cells with KGF stimulated secretion of mature NDF protein into the culture medium, and Balb/ MK cells treated with purified recombinant NDF protein showed increased DNA synthesis. We also found evidence of NDF induction in two models of tissue repair in mice: in full-thickness skin wounds, following locally increased KGF production, and in kidney after partial hepatectomy, following elevation of circulating HGF levels. These results reveal that mesenchymally-derived HGF and KGF can activate autocrine NDF signaling in their epithelial targets, and suggest that this mechanism contributes to the coordination of stages of wound repair, and possibly development, where these growth factors act in concert to direct epithelial proliferation, morphogenesis and differentiation.

Abstract
Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) is a multifunctional cytokine which plays an important role in cutaneous wound repair. To gain insight into the mechanisms of action of this growth and differentiation factor in the skin, we searched for genes which are regulated by TGF-beta1 in cultured HaCaT keratinocytes. Using the differential display RT-PCR technology we identified a gene which was strongly downregulated by TGF-beta1. The identified cDNA includes sequences of the keratin 15 (K15) gene which encodes a component of the cytoskeleton of basal cells in stratified epithelia. Surprisingly, our cDNA also included an unknown sequence. Since this cDNA lacks an open reading frame, the corresponding mRNA is likely to be nonfunctional. However, we also demonstrate a strong negative regulation of the expression of the published, functional K15 variant. Expression of K15 was also suppressed by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and to a lesser extent by epidermal growth factor (EGF) and keratinocyte growth factor (KGF). By contrast, the major basal type I keratin, K14, was upregulated by TGF-beta1, whereas TNF-alpha, EGF, and KGF had no effect. Consistent with the in vitro data, we found a significant reduction of the K15 mRNA levels after skin injury, whereas K14 expression increased during the wound healing process. Immunostaining revealed the presence of K15 in all basal cells of the epidermis adjacent to the wound, but not in the hyperproliferative epithelium above the granulation tissue. These data demonstrate that K15 is excluded from the activated keratinocytes of the hyperthickened wound epidermis, possibly as a result of increased growth factor expression in injured skin.

Abstract
Recent studies have suggested a role of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in repair processes of the skin as well as in various types of fibrotic disease. However, a function of this molecule in central nervous system (CNS) repair has not been demonstrated yet. In this study we analysed the temporal and spatial expression pattern of CTGF after unilateral kainic acid lesions of the hippocampal CA3 region in mice. We found a strong induction of CTGF mRNA and protein expression in neurons and glial cells of the lesioned hippocampus. Interestingly, increased expression of this mitogen was accompanied by elevated levels of the extracellular matrix molecule fibronectin, which is a known target of CTGF action. Therefore, our data indicate a novel function of CTGF in postlesional restructuring of the hippocampus, where it possibly participates in glial scar formation.
