Abstract
Choriocarcinoma responds well to chemotherapy, and its growth can be monitored by measuring human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) as a tumor marker. Thoracotomy was carried out in six patients with the disease because their pulmonary nodules persisted after repeated courses of chemotherapy over a 4 month period. They were followed up for a long period. These observations suggest that the most important role of thoracotomy is for diagnostic purposes; it is used for therapeutic purposes only when the pulmonary lesion is the only remaining source of increased HCG excretion. Much attention must be paid to tertiary hematogeneous metastases caused by resection of pulmonary foci that are unresponsive to chemotherapy.

Abstract
We attempted to examine procoagulant activity (PCA), X activator activity (XAA) and plasminogen activator activity (PlgAA) of various leukemic cell lysates: 17 acute myelocytic leukemias (AML), 4 acute promyelocytic leukemias (APL), 9 acute myelomonocytic leukemias (AMMoL), 7 chronic myelocytic leukemias (CML), 4 CML with blastic crisis, 7 T cell acute lymphocytic leukemias (ALL), 8 adult T cell leukemias (ATL), 8 null cell ALL, 6 B cell lymphocytic leukemias. Among those 70 cases, 4 APL, 4 AMMoL and 5 AML were associated with overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and 5 T cell ALL, 7 ATL and 2 null cell ALL were associated with hypofibrinogenemia not adapted for DIC. The sample used was the lysate of 10(7) cells. PCA was measured by recalcification time of normal plasma with the cell lysate, XAA and PlgAA was measured by chromogenic substrate. APL and AML, especially those associated with overt DIC, had high PCA, and lymphocytic leukemia generally had low PCA in comparison with normal controls. Total PCA (PCA multiplied by cell count/microliter) was remarkably increased in DIC and mildly increased in ALL with hypofibrinogenemia. The change in XAA and total XAA (XAA multiplied by cell count/microliter) was not remarkable in any leukemia except for T cell ALL and null cell ALL with hypofibrinogenemia. PlgAA was high in lymphocytic leukemias with hypofibrinogenemia, APL and AMMoL with DIC. Total PlgAA (PlgAA multiplied by cell count/microliter) was high especially in T cell ALL and null cell ALL with hypofibrinogenemia. Thus it is probable that PCA is the most important factor causing DIC in myelogenous leukemia and that PlgAA is the most important factor causing hypofibrinogenemia in lymphocytic leukemia. The measurement of these activities in the leukemic cells is valuable in prediction and prevention of the hemostatic disorder in leukemia.

Abstract
Using a metal contact freezing methods, the junctional complexes of Sertoli cells and other epithelial cells (intestine, liver, and epididymis) in the mouse were studied by freeze-fracture in unfixed and in aldehyde-fixed specimens. The tight junctions of the Sertoli cells without fixation consists of discrete rows of particles located preferentially on the E face. Continuous furrows with or without tight-junctional particles are found on both fractured faces. The majority of the tight-junctional particles of th Sertoli cells are situated at one side of the furrow rather than in the center. The "aisle" configuration of the gap junction is seen in developing Sertoli cells prepared without fixation. Tight junctions of epithelial cells other than Sertoli cells consists of discrete rows of particles on the E face and furrows on the P face when prepared without fixation. The tight and gap junctions of the Sertoli cells are not affected by fixation, but the tight junctions of other types of epithelial cells are effected as previously suggested. A distribution pattern of the gap-junctional particles of the Sertoli cells and of other cells shows a pleomorphism. Changes in gap junctions produced by fixation could not be detected clearly. Characteristics of the Sertoli-cell junctions are discussed. Desmosomes between the intestinal epithelial cells without fixation are presented.

Abstract
On the basis of recent neurophysiological findings on the mammalian visual cortex, a self-organizing neural network model is proposed for the understanding of the development of complex cells. The model is composed of two kinds of connections from LGN cells to a complex cell. One is direct excitatory connections and the other is indirect inhibitory connections via simple cells. Inhibitory synapses between simple cells and complex cells are assumed to be modifiable. The model was simulated on a computer to confirm its behavior.

Abstract
Temporal sensitivity, defined as the reciprocal of the minimum exposure duration required for a grating to be detected, was measured for gratings with constant contrasts in a range of spatial frequencies. Temporal sensitivity functions were found to be given by curves with maximum sensitivity at 0.7 approximately 0.8 C/deg. Two criteria of detection were used: the detection of any change on the screen and the detection of patterns. The difference between temporal sensitivities under the two criteria was large at low spatial frequencies but was small at high spatial frequencies.

Abstract
Cellular junctions of the lining epithelium of the efferent ductules of the mouse, guinea pig, and human testes were examined by freeze-fracture. A belt-like gap juncion consists of a large aggregation of particles with a few fragments of the tight junctional strands and circumferentially occupies the adluminal area between the nonciliated cells. This type of gap junction appears to be one of the components of the junctional complexes in mammalian efferent ductules. Functional significance of the belt-like gap junction is discussed in the light of the findings.

Abstract
The non-operative method of reduction of locking metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb is described, and illustrated by four case reports. Experimental studies in the hands of a fresh cadaver are also described. Locking of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb can be produced by slight external forces, insufficient to damage strong tissues. Incarceration of the sesamoid bone is anatomically impossible, but incarceration of the proximal portion of the volar plate is believed to be the true cause. This incarceration can be reduced easily by our non-operative method along with intra-articular injection of local anaesthetics.

Abstract
The peritoneal mesothelium of mouse embryos (12 to 18 day of gestation) was studied by freeze-fracture and in sections in order to reveal the initial formation of the tight junctions. Freeze-fracture observations showed three types of tight junctions. Type I consists of belt-like meshworks of elevations on the P face and of shallow grooves on the E face. No tight junctional particle can be seen either on the elevations or in the grooves. Type II shows rows of discontinuous particles on the elevations on the P face. Type III consists of strands forming ridges on the P face. On the E face, the grooves of Type II and III appear to be narrower and sharper than those of Type I. Quantitatively, Type I junctions are most numerous during the early stages (day 12-13) of embryonic development, while Type III junctions become more common in the later stages, and are the only type seen by day 18. Observations on sections, however, fail to distinguish between the three types. The results suggest that an initial sign of tight junction formation is close apposition of the two cell membranes in the junctional domain, without tight junctional particles. Later, the particles appear to be incorporated in the tight junctions and the strands form by fusion of the particles.

Abstract
Germ cells and Sertoli cells in embryonic mouse testes (day 14 to 20 of gestation) were examined by sectioning and freeze-fracture. Intercellular cytoplasmic bridges between the germ cells are observed in day 14 and older embryos. Membrane specializations with dense fuzzy material similar to the so-called "desmosome-like structures" are found between Sertoli cells and germ cells. A cell contact area with dense opposed membranes is also found between adjacent germ cells. Asymmetrical dense fuzzy lining of both Sertoli and germ cell membranes is noted. Pinocytotic pits or caveolae are frequently found in the Sertoli cell membrane. Between adjacent Sertoli cells, gap junctions of various sizes and focal meshworks of the occluding junctions are found. Most of the occluding junctional particles are located in the center of the grooves in the E face, and are similar to those in postnatal and adult Sertoli cell junctions. In addition, on both fractured faces there are ridges and grooves devoid of particles which are continuous with occluding junctions with particles, suggesting an initial stage in the formation of occluding junctions of the Sertoli cells. Particles gathered at the site of desmosome-like structures are present on the P face of the Sertoli cell.

Abstract
Intercellular junctions between the Sertoli cells in the germ cell-free testis of the congenic mouse were studied during ontogeny. In freeze-fracture replicas, these junctions are characterized by a great number of parallel occluding junctions, in which the particles are preferentially located in the center of the grooves in the E face. These particles appear to be arranged in discrete rows in both P and E fracture faces. In the initial stages of junction formation, large gap junctions with hexagonally packed particle aggregates and particle-free regions are observed. In the later stages, short segments of the occluding junctions are found associated with gap junctions. In later stages, the gap junctions diminish in size and number. These junctions are quite similar to those between Sertoli cells in the normal mouse and rat reported previously. The Sertoli cell junctions develop in the absence of the spermatogenic cells of this congenic mouse.

Abstract
Mouse testes of newborn to adult were examined by freeze-fracture. Between the newborn Sertoli cells, gap junctions consisting of aggregations of the intramembranous particles (about 8 nm in diameter) are frequently found. Some of the junctions are about 1 mum in diameter and show particle-free regions in the aggregation. Linear arrangements of a few particles, which appear to be the initial formation of the occluding junctions, are seen in the newborn sertoli cells. The occluding junctions are arranged in a meshwork, in which the gap junctions are situated between the stages of newborn to six days of age. The particles of the occluding junctions are predominantly located on the B face in the center of the groove instead of the A face of the ridge. The occluding junctions do not appear to surround the entire circumference of the Sertoli cell of the 6-day-old mouse. The gap junctions decrease in size. In later stages, many parallel occluding junctions (up to forty in number) are found over one Sertoli cell surface and are distributed circumferentially around the entire cell surface, indicating establishment of the blood-testis barrier. The occluding junctions dominate and the gap junctions diminish in number as development proceeds.

Abstract
Normal and feminized human testes were examined by means of freeze-fracture. In both cases, the junctional complexes between adjacent Sertoli cells show a unique characteristic feature. Many parallel linear occluding junctions are located circumferentially around the cell surface at the level of the nucleus. They are more than forty in number over one Sertoli cell surface. In the A face, the particles are not prominent on the ridge of the junctions. Instead, they are clearly seen in the center of the groove of the junctions on the B face. Gap junctions consisting of particle aggregation are not found between the Sertoli cells. The gap junctions between the Leydig cells are frequently observed in both normal and feminized testes. They are round or elliptic in contour and about several micrometers in diameter. The particles, about 8 nm in diameter, are closely packed to form a quasi-hexagonal pattern. The pits are found on the B face corresponding to the particle aggregation.

Abstract
Since Ledbetter and Porter (1964) described the 13 subunits which are visible in cross sections of negatively stained plant microtubules, subsequent observations have generally confirmed this number. By using Mizuhira's fixative composed of tannic acid and glutaraldehyde, it is easyto demonstrate the subunits of microtublules without optical reinforcement Cytoplasmic microtubules and sperm axonemes, fixed with Mizuhira's fixtive, similarly show 13 subunits (Mizuhira's and Futaesaku, 1971, 1972; Futaesaky et al., 1972; Tilney et al., 1973). This paper will describe a particular type of microtubule in insect epidermal cells fixed with the above fixative. The number of the subunits is found to be 15 in tranverse sections.

Abstract
Testicular biopsy materials of men were examined with the electron microscope equipped with a tilling stage. An optical transformation method was applied for the electron microscope images. An attempt was made to clarify relationships between the contour and the internal pattern of Reinke's crystal in the interstitial cell. The shape of this crystal is a hexagonal prism. Three types of internal patterns are observed in relation to the main planes of the crystal. The crystal consists of 50-A-thick filaments. It is trigonal, a = 300 A, c = 450 A, being similar to catalase crystals studied by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy (20), but the dimensions are different. Dislocations of Reinke's crystal are also analyzed. In some interstitial cells without Reinke's crystal, specially arranged 50-A-thick filaments are observed. They are similar in arrangement to the pattern within Reinke's crystal, but not so closely compacted. Morphological similarities and dissimilarities between this crystal and other crystal and crystalloid structures are discussed.
