Congenital perceptive hearing loss and atopic dermatitis

Two brothers were suffering from perceptive hearing loss, atopic dermatitis and mild palmophantar keratoderma. There was a predisposition to atopic disease in the maternal family, and palmoplantar keratosis as a dominant trait in the paternal family. Atopoc dermatitis and palmoplantar keratoderma separately have been reported to co-exist with hearing loss, but a combination of all three has not so far been reported.

Ultrastructure of the oral epithelium in leukoplakia associated with tylosis and esophageal carcinoma

Ultrastructural studies have been carried out on epithelium taken from the oral lesions of tylosis-related leukoplakia and preleukoplakia in a group of patients known to be at high risk for esophageal carcinoma. Several structural abnormalities are described; in particular, the presence of intranuclear electron dense particles 90 nm in diameter. Similar particles have been found in the nuclei of epithelial cells from an esophageal carcinoma developing in one of the patients under study.

[The Rothmund-Thomson-syndrome. A case report]

This case of Rothmund-Thomson Syndrome is presented because of its association with hitherto unrecognized disorders, especially internal malignancy. The position and linkage of these associated symptomes with the genetically determined syndrome of Rothmund and Thomson is discussed.

Genetic heterogeneity in hyperkeratosis palmaris et plantaris

More than one form of 'simple' hyperkeratosis palmaris et plantaris (tylosis) probably exists. Two unrelated patients showing hyperkeratosis of relatively late onset have been found who developed esophageal carcinoma, while previously reported families with dominantly inherited esophageal cancer and with esophageal stricture, also showed late onset of hyperkeratosis. In contrast the more usual families with onset of hyperkeratosis in the first six months of life show no association with esophageal or other disease.

[Palmoplantar and allotopic keratosis with severe disease of the teeth in two brothers]

The Authors have studied two sibs, 20 and 6 years of age respectively, which show hereditary cheratosis of the palms and sales, with spots of cheratosis in other loci too, in addition to dental dystrophia and expulsive gingivitis.

From the genetical point of view the most important factor is that neither parent is affected by the condition which on the other hand is generally considered as dominant.

The Authors suppose that the morbid genotype comes from the father's side of the family tree.
