Abstract
Two-ring intramolecular π-electron delocalization assisted dihydrogen bonds existing in (1Z,4Z)-1,4-dipentene-3-bora-1,5-diol and its symmetrically substituted derivatives have been analysed here since the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) calculations on these systems were performed. The influence of the coexistence of two intramolecular dihydrogen bonded rings in these molecular structures on properties of intramolecular dihydrogen bonds as well as on the π-electron delocalization within these rings was investigated. The comparison with corresponding structures of typical two-ring, so-called resonance-assisted, RAHB, systems was performed. The results of calculations show that such rings' coexistence leads to the weakening of dihydrogen bonds, similarly as for the typical two-ring RAHB systems. The Quantum Theory of ''Atoms in Molecules'' (QTAIM) was also applied here to get more details about the nature of dihydrogen bonds. Correlations between dihydrogen bond strength measures and other energetic, geometrical and topological parameters were also analysed. It was found that characteristics of bond critical points as well as of ring critical points are useful to estimate the strength of intramolecular dihydrogen bonds in two-ring dihydrogen bonded systems discussed here. The Natural Bond Orbital, NBO, approach parameters are also discussed as useful ones to describe properties of dihydrogen bonded systems.

Abstract
In the presented research, we address the original concept of resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding (RAHB) by means of the many-body interaction approach and electron density delocalization analysis. The investigated molecular patterns of RAHBs are open chains consisting of two to six molecules in which the intermolecular hydrogen bond stabilizes the complex. Non-RAHB counterparts are considered to be reference systems. The results show the influence of the neighbour monomers on the unsaturated chains in terms of the many-body interaction energy contribution. Exploring the relation between the energy parameters and the growing number of molecules in the chain, we give an explicit extrapolation of the interaction energy and its components in the infinite chain. Electron delocalization within chain motifs has been analysed from three different points of view: three-body delocalization between C=C-C, two-body hydrogen bond delocalization indices and also between fragments (monomers). A many-body contribution to the interaction energy as well as electron density helps to establish the assistance of resonance in the strength of hydrogen bonds upon the formation of the present molecular chains. The direct relation between interaction energy and delocalization supports the original concept, and refutes some of the criticisms of the RAHB idea.

Abstract
Within the framework of the density functional theory approach, we studied the relationship between the chemical nature of intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters, J-couplings and 1H-chemical shifts [δ(1H)], of the atoms involved in such bonds in o-hydroxyaryl Schiff bases during the proton transfer process. For the first time, the shape of the dependence of the degree of covalence in HBs on 1J(N-H), 1J(O-H), 2hJ(O-N), and δ(1H) during the proton transfer process in o-hydroxyaryl Schiff bases was analyzed. Parameters obtained from Bader's theory of atoms in molecules were used to assess the dependence of covalent character in HBs with both the NMR properties. The influence of π-electronic delocalization on 2hJ(N-O) under the proton transfer process was investigated. 2hJ(O-N) in a Mannich base was also studied in order to compare the results with an unsaturated system. In addition, substituent effects on the phenolic ring were investigated. Our results indicate that the covalent character of HBs on both sides of the transition state undergoes a smooth exponential increase as the δ(1H) moves downfield. The degree of covalence of the N⋯H (O⋯H) bond increases linearly as 1J(N-H) (1J(O-H)) becomes more negative, even after reaching the transition state. Non-vanishing values of spin dipolar (SD) and paramagnetic spin orbital terms of 2hJ(O-N) show that π-electronic delocalization has a non-negligible effect on tautomeric equilibrium and gives evidence of the presence of the resonance assisted HB.Variation of the SD term of 2hJ(O-N) follows a similar pattern as the change in the para-delocalization aromaticity index of the chelate ring.

Abstract
Intramolecular interactions are shown to be key for favoring a given structure in systems with a variety of conformers. In ortho-substituted benzene derivatives including a beryllium moiety, beryllium bonds provide very large stabilizations with respect to non-bound conformers and enthalpy differences above one hundred kJ·mol−1 are found in the most favorable cases, especially if the newly formed rings are five or six-membered heterocycles. These values are in general significantly larger than hydrogen bonds in 1,2-dihidroxybenzene. Conformers stabilized by a beryllium bond exhibit the typical features of this non-covalent interaction, such as the presence of a bond critical point according to the topology of the electron density, positive Laplacian values, significant geometrical distortions and strong interaction energies between the donor and acceptor quantified by using the Natural Bond Orbital approach. An isodesmic reaction scheme is used as a tool to measure the strength of the beryllium bond in these systems in terms of isodesmic energies (analogous to binding energies), interaction energies and deformation energies. This approach shows that a huge amount of energy is spent on deforming the donor–acceptor pairs to form the new rings.

Abstract
Substituents alter the electron density distribution in benzene in various ways, depending on their electron withdrawing and donating capabilities, as summarized by the empirical Hammett equation. The change of the π electron density distribution subsequently impacts the interaction of substituted benzenes or other cyclic conjugated rings with anions. Currently the design and synthesis of conjugated cyclic receptors capable of binding anions is an active field due to their applications in the sensing and removal of environmental contaminants and molecular recognition. By using the block-localized wavefunction (BLW) method, which is a variant of ab initio valence bond (VB) theory and can derive the reference resonance-free state self-consistently, we quantified the resonance-assisted (RA) or resonance-impaired (RI) phenomena in anion–π interactions from both structural and energetic perspectives. The frozen interaction, in which the electrostatic attraction is involved, has been shown to be the governing factor for the RA or RI interactions with anions. Energy analyses based on the empirical point charge (EPC) model indicated that the anion–π interactions can be simplified as the attraction between a negative point charge (anion) and a group of local dipoles, affected by the enriched or diminished π-cloud due to the resonance between the substituents and the conjugated ring. Hence, two strategies for the design of novel anion receptors can be envisioned. One is the enhancement of the magnitudes and/or numbers of local dipoles (polarized σ bonds), and the other is the reduction of π electron density in conjugated rings. For cases with the RI characteristics, “curved” aromatic molecules are preferred to be anion receptors. Indeed, extremely strong binding was found in complexes formed with fluorinated corannulene (F-CDD) and fluorinated [5]cycloparaphenylene (F-[5]CPP). Inspired by the RA phenomenon, complexes of p-, o- and m-benzoquinones with halides were revisited. Substituents alter the electron density distribution in benzene in various ways, depending on their electron withdrawing and donating capabilities, as summarized by the empirical Hammett equation.![]()

Abstract
Imine and enamine bonds decorate the skeleton of numerous reagents, catalysts, and organic materials. However, it is difficult to isolate at will a single tautomer, as dynamic equilibria occur easily, even in the solid state, and are sensitive to electronic and steric effect, including π-conjugation and H-bonding. Here, using as model Schiff bases generated from salicylaldehydes and TRIS in a set of linear free energy relationships (LFER), we disclose how the formation of either imines or enamines can be controlled and provide a comprehensive framework that captures the structural underpinning of this prediction. This work highlights the potentiality of tailor-made designs en route to compounds with desirable functionality.

Abstract
A one-pot procedure for preparing a series of chiral imines by direct condensation of d-glucamine with 2-hydroxyacetophenones is described. Under conventional acetylation an unexpected mixture of two different peracetylated molecules is obtained, one with an open enamine structure, and the other incorporating an N-acetyl-1,3-oxazolidine into the acyclic skeleton. Surprisingly, both molecules coexist within the crystal's unit cell, as inferred from single-crystal X-ray analysis of a 5-bromo-substituted aryl derivative. Moreover, the 1,3-oxazolidine ring exists as rotational conformers (E,Z) owing to the restricted rotation around the N-acetyl bond. The equilibrium involving imine and enamine structures has been assessed in detail, providing in addition linear free-energy relationships between the tautomerization constants (KT) and the electronic effect of the substituents.

Abstract

The nature of resonance-assisted
hydrogen bonds (RAHB) is still
subject of an ongoing debate. We therefore analyzed the σ and
π charge redistributions associated with the formation of intramolecular
hydrogen bonds in malonaldehyde (MA) and its saturated analogue 3-hydroxypropanal
(3-OH) and addressed the question whether there is a resonance assistance
phenomenon in the sense of a synergistic interplay between the σ
and π electron systems. Our quantum chemical calculations at
the BP86/TZ2P level of theory show that the π charge flow is
indeed in line with the Lewis structure as proposed by the RAHB model.
This typical rearrangement of charge is only present in the unsaturated
system, and not in its saturated analogue. Resonance in the π
electron system assists the intramolecular hydrogen bond by reducing
the hydrogen bond distance, and by providing an additional stabilizing
component to the net bonding energy. The σ orbital interaction
plays an important role in the enhanced hydrogen bond strength in
MA as well. However, there is no resonance assistance in the sense
of an interplay between σ charge transfer and π polarization;
σ and π contribute independently from each other.

Abstract
The concept of resonance-enhanced hydrogen bond (RAHB) has been widely accepted and applied as it highlights the positive impact of π-conjugation on intramolecular H-bonds. However, electron delocalization is directional and there is a possibility that π-resonance goes from the H-bond acceptor to the H-bond donor, leading to a negative impact on H-bonds. Here we used the block-localized wavefunction (BLW) method which is a variant of ab initio valence bond (VB) theory and able to derive strictly electron-localized structures self-consistently, to quantify the interplay between H-bond and π-resonance in the terms of geometry, energetics and spectral properties. The comparison of geometrical optimizations with and without π-resonance shows that conjugation can indeed either enhance or weaken intramolecular H-bonds. We further experimented with various substituents attached to either the H-bond acceptor and/or H-bond donor side(s) to tune the H-bonding strength in both directions.

Abstract
Although resonance-assisted H-bonds (RAHBs) are well recognized, the role of π resonance in RAHBs is controversial, as the seemingly enhanced H-bonds in unsaturated compounds may result from the constraints imposed by the σ skeleton. Herein the block-localized wave function (BLW) method, which can derive optimal yet resonance-quenched structures with related physiochemical properties, was employed to examine the correlation between π resonance and the strength of intramolecular RAHBs. Examination of a series of paradigmatic molecules with RAHBs and their saturated analogues showed that it is inappropriate to compare a conjugated system with its saturated counterpart, as they may have quite different σ frameworks. Nevertheless, comparison between a conjugated system and its resonance-quenched (i.e., electron-localized) state, which have identical σ skeletons, shows that in all studied cases, π resonance unanimously reduces the bonding distance by 0.111-0.477 Å, strengthens the bonding by 40-56 %, and redshifts the D-H vibrational frequency by 104-628 cm-1 . Furthermore, there is an excellent correlation between hydrogen-bonding strength and the classical Coulomb attraction between the hydrogen-bond donor and the acceptor, which suggests that the dominant role of the electrostatic interaction in H-bonds and RAHBs originates from the charge flow from H-bond donors to acceptors through π conjugation.

Abstract
The concept of resonance-assisted hydrogen bond (RAHB) has been widely accepted, and its impact on structures and energetics can be best studied computationally using the block-localized wave function (BLW) method, which is a variant of ab initio valence bond (VB) theory and able to derive strictly electron-localized structures self-consistently. In this work, we use the BLW method to examine a few molecules that result from the merging of two malonaldehyde molecules. As each of these molecules contains two hydrogen bonds, these intramolecular hydrogen bonds may be cooperative or anticooperative, depended on their relative orientations, and compared with the hydrogen bond in malonaldehyde. Apart from quantitatively confirming the concept of RAHB, the comparison of the computations with and without π resonance shows that both σ-framework and π-resonance contribute to the nonadditivity in these RAHB systems with multiple hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
Resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding (RAHB), a concept introduced by Gilli and co-workers in 1989, concerns a kind of intramolecular H-bonding strengthened by a conjugated π-system, usually in 6-, 8-, or 10-membered rings. This Review highlights the involvement of RAHB as a driving force in the synthesis of organic, coordination, and organometallic compounds, as a handy tool in the activation of covalent bonds, and in starting moieties for synthetic transformations. The unique roles of RAHB in molecular recognition and switches, E/Z isomeric resolution, racemization and epimerization of amino acids and chiral amino alcohols, solvatochromism, liquid-crystalline compounds, and in synthons for crystal engineering and polymer materials are also discussed. The Review can provide practical guidance for synthetic chemists that are interested in exploring and further developing RAHB-assisted synthesis and design of materials.

Abstract
Isobenzofuran-1(3H)-ones (phtalides) are heterocycles that present a benzene ring fused to a γ-lactone functionality. This structural motif is found in several natural and synthetic compounds that present relevant biological activities. In the present investigation, the 3-(2-hydroxy-4,4-dimethyl-6-oxocyclohexen-1-yl)isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one was characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In the crystal structure, there are two molecules per asymmetric unit. One of them exhibits resonance assisted hydrogen bonds (RAHBs). Semi-empirical and DFT calculations were performed to obtain electronic structure and π-delocalization parameters, in order to better understand the energy stabilization of RAHBs in the crystal packing of the studied molecule. The structural parameters showed good agreement between theoretical and experimental data. The theoretical investigation revealed that the RAHBs stabilization energy is directly related to the electronic delocalization of the enol form fragment. In addition, RAHBs significantly affected the HOMO and charge distribution around the conjugated system.

Abstract
Path integral molecular dynamics and experimental NMR data are used to investigate resonance-assisted hydrogen bonds (RAHBs). When nuclear delocalisation is included in chemical shift calculations, the agreement with experiment is excellent, while static calculations show very poor performance. The results support the concept of RAHB, which has recently been questioned.

Abstract
Hydrogen bonds play a crucial role in many biochemical processes and in supramolecular chemistry. In this study, we show quantum chemically that neither aromaticity nor other forms of π assistance are responsible for the enhanced stability of the hydrogen bonds in adenine-thymine (AT) DNA base pairs. This follows from extensive bonding analyses of AT and smaller analogs thereof, based on dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT). Removing the aromatic rings of either A or T has no effect on the Watson-Crick bond strength. Only when the smaller mimics become saturated, that is, when the hydrogen-bond acceptor and donor groups go from sp (2) to sp (3), does the stability of the resulting model complexes suddenly drop. Bonding analyses based on quantitative Kohn-Sham molecular orbital theory and corresponding energy decomposition analyses (EDA) show that the stronger hydrogen bonds in the unsaturated model complexes and in AT stem from stronger electrostatic interactions as well as enhanced donor-acceptor interactions in the σ-electron system, with the covalency being responsible for shortening the hydrogen bonds in these dimers.

Abstract
Mono- and diaza-derivatives of malondialdehydes, namely 3-alkyl(aryl)amino-2-arylacroleins and 1,5-dialkyl(aryl)-3-arylvinamidines are open-chain systems in which extended electron delocalization and pseudoaromaticity can be envisaged. A set of diversely functionalized compounds has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic data and X-ray diffractometry. Quantum-chemical calculations were performed for all possible neutral tautomers and conformers in the gas phase and compared to those in polar solvents (CHCl3, DMSO, and EtOH) at the M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level. Tautomeric equilibria and conformational preferences can be rationalized in terms of structural factors, which can be roughly estimated as summation or subtractions of intramolecular interactions. As expected, a key role is played by intramolecular hydrogen bonds whose strength varies from the gas phase to polar ethanol. This issue also delves into the concept of resonance-assisted H-bond, where the donor and acceptor atoms are connected by a π-conjugated system. The most stable conformers (structures a and c) possess a high degree of pseudoaromaticity as inferred from HOMA indexes and other delocalization parameters.

Abstract
The vicinity of a hydrogen bond donor (O-H) and a hydrogen bond acceptor (C=O or C=N- R) in salicylaldehydes and ortho-Schiff bases results in significant structural variations compared to the monosubstituted derivatives that are reflected in the electronic structure and thus in the spectroscopic properties. This interplay between intramolecular hydrogen bonding and multicenter p- electron delocalization is the origin of the concept of resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding (RAHB). Herein, the complexity is extended from one hydrogen bond donor-acceptor pair in salicylaldehyde and ortho-Schiff bases to three hydrogen bond donor-acceptor pairs in 2,4,6-tricarbonyl- and 2,4,6- triimine-substituted phloroglucinols (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene), respectively. To evaluate the changes in the molecular and electronic structures, we have performed a comprehensive computational, spectroscopic, and structural study starting from monosubstituted benzene derivatives as references over ortho-disubstituted derivates to the sixfold-substituted derivatives. Whereas in salicylaldehydes, ortho- Schiff bases, and 2,4,6-tricarbonyl-phloroglucinols the phenolic O-protonated tautomers represent the energy minima, the N-protonated tautomers represent the energy minima in 2,4,6-triiminephloroglucinols. The analysis provides a keto-enamine resonance structure with six exocyclic double bonds to be dominant for these species reminiscent of [6]radialenes, which were termed heteroradialenes. These heteroradialenes are non-aromatic alicycles. However, the predominance of this resonance structure does not represent a sudden change going from the 2,4,6-tricarbonyl- to the 2,4,6-triimine-phloroglucinols, but a gradual increase of analogous resonance structure contributions is observed even in salicylaldehyde and ortho-Schiff bases demonstrating some hetero-orthoquinodimethane character. These changes are, besides in the molecular structures, well reflected in the IR spectra, which can therefore be used as a simple tool to probe the electronic structures in these systems. Interruption of the delocalized p system supporting the intramolecular hydrogen bond, i. e. going from 2,4,6-triimine- to 2,4,6-triamine-substituted phloroglucinols, reestablishes an O-protonated aromatic phloroglucinol system.

Abstract
In the title compound, C(14)H(8)Br(2)N(2)O(2), the mol-ecular structure features intra-molecular N-H⋯O [2.639 (2) Å and 130°] and N-H⋯Br [3.053 (2) Å and 114°] hydrogen bonding. Due to inversion symmetry, the asymmetric part of the unit cell consits of one half-mol-ecule. In the crystal, inversion dimers linked by pairs of N-H⋯O [2.955 (2) Å and 135°] hydrogen bonds occur. The structure also features C=O⋯π [3.228 (2) Å] and Br⋯Br [3.569 (1) Å] contacts.
