Abstract
The contact resistance (Rc) and the effective carrier mobility (μeff) are considered as the important indicators of the performance of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Conventionally, the contact resistance is regarded as the interface effect between the metal electrodes and the organic semiconductors, while the carrier mobility is correlated to the crystallinity and π-π stacking of the organic molecules. In the staggered OFETs, Rc is actually closely correlated to μeff through the channel sheet resistance. Besides, the accuracy of the carrier mobility directly extracted from the non-ideal transfer curves with significant contact effect is always questionable. Herein, a diffusion-lead surface doping approach is employed to improve the contact resistance and mobility issues simultaneously. By suppressing the trap states in the sublimated 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT) organic semiconductor with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ), we observed a 3-fold increase in the carrier mobility from 0.5 to 1.6 cm2 V-1 s-1, and the Rc also drops remarkably from 25.7 kΩ cm to 5.2 kΩ cm. Moreover, the threshold voltage (VTH), subthreshold swing (SS) and the bias stability of the OFETs are also significantly improved. Based on the detailed characterization of the C8-BTBT film upon surface doping, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the film crystallinity, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) for the surface potential, trap state investigation by density of states (DOS) measurement and electrical circuit modeling for partial doping analysis, we confirmed that the spontaneous charge transfer process due to the diffusion of the F4-TCNQ dopants in the C8-BTBT matrix can lead to an effective trap filling. This technique and findings can be potentially developed into a general approach for the improvement of different performance parameters of OFETs.

Abstract
The heterocyclic thiazole unit has been extensively used as electron-deficient building block in π-conjugated materials over the last decade. Its incorporation into organic semiconducting materials is particularly interesting due to its structural resemblance to the more commonly used thiophene building block, thus allowing the optoelectronic properties of a material to be tuned without significantly perturbing its molecular structure. Here, we discuss the structural differences between thiazole- and thiophene-based organic semiconductors, and the effects on the physical properties of the materials. An overview of thiazole-based polymers is provided, which have emerged over the past decade for organic electronic applications and it is discussed how the incorporation of thiazole has affected the device performance of organic solar cells and organic field-effect transistors. Finally, in conclusion, an outlook is presented on how thiazole-based polymers can be incorporated into all-electron deficient polymers in order to obtain high-performance acceptor polymers for use in bulk-heterojunction solar cells and as organic field-effect transistors. Computational methods are used to discuss some newly designed acceptor building blocks that have the potential to be polymerized with a fused bithiazole moiety, hence propelling the advancement of air-stable n-type organic semiconductors.

Abstract
Acceptor–donor–acceptor-type compounds 5′,5″-(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis(3′-dodecyl-2,2′-bithiophene-5-carbonitrile) (9) and 4,4′-(5,5′-(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis(3-dodecylthiophene-5,2-diyl))dibenzonitrile (10) were designed and synthesized. These compounds differ in terminal positions, compound 9 with a thiophene-containing nitrile group and compound 10 with a phenyl-containing nitrile group. Both compounds have shown good thermal stability and low band gap. The band gaps of compounds 9 and 10 were 1.74 and 1.83 eV, respectively. These results indicate that they are promising materials for use in optoelectronics.

Abstract
The coupling of aryl halides with catalytically activated aryl C-H bonds provides a desirable and atom-economical alternative to standard cross-coupling reactions for the construction of new C-C bonds. The reaction, termed direct (hetero)arylation, is believed to follow a base-assisted, concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) pathway. During this process, carboxylate or carbonate anions coordinate to the metal center, typically palladium, in situ and assist in the deprotonation transition state. Researchers have employed this methodology with numerous arenes and heteroarenes, including substituted benzenes, perfluorinated benzenes, and thiophenes. Thiophene substrates have demonstrated high reactivity toward C-H bond activation when appropriately substituted with electron-rich and/or electron-deficient groups. Because of the pervasive use of thiophenes in materials for organic electronics, researchers have used this chemistry to modularly prepare conjugated small molecules and, more recently, conjugated polymers. Although optimization of reaction conditions such as solvent system, phosphine ligand, carboxylate additives, temperature, and time is necessary for efficient C-H bond reactivity of each monomer, direct (hetero)arylation polymerization (DHAP) can afford high yielding polymeric materials with elevated molecular weights. The properties of these materials often rival those of polymers prepared by traditional methods. Moreover, DHAP provides a facile means for the synthesis of polymers that were previously inaccessible or difficult to prepare due to the instability of organometallic monomers. The major downfall of direct (hetero)arylation, however, is the lack of C-H bond selectivity, particularly for thiophene substrates, which can result in cross-linked material during polymerization reactions. Further fine-tuning of reaction conditions such as temperature and reaction time may suppress these unwanted side reactions. Alternatively, new monomers can be designed where other reactive bonds are blocked, either sterically or by substitution with unreactive alkyl or halogen groups. In this Account, we illustrate these methods and present examples of DHAP reactions that involve the preparation of common homopolymers used in organic electronics (P3HT, PEDOT, PProDOT), copolymers formed by activation of electron-rich (bithiophene, fused bithiophenes) and electron-deficient monomers (TPD, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, 2,2'-bithiazole). Our group is optimizing these reactions and developing ways to make DHAP a common atom-economical synthetic tool for polymer chemists.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, organic semiconductors have been the subject of intensive academic and commercial interests. Thiazole is a common electron-accepting heterocycle due to electron-withdrawing nitrogen of imine (C=N), several moieties based on thiazole have been widely introduced into organic semiconductors, and yielded high performance in organic electronic devices. This article reviews recent developments in the area of thiazole-based organic semiconductors, particularly thiazole, bithiazole, thiazolothiazole and benzobisthiazole-based small molecules and polymers, for applications in organic field-effect transistors, solar cells and light-emitting diodes. The remaining problems and challenges, and the key research direction in near future are discussed.

Abstract
World energy needs grow each year. To address global warming and climate changes the search for renewable energy sources with limited greenhouse gas emissions and the development of energy-efficient lighting devices are underway. This Review reports recent progress made in the synthesis and characterization of conjugated polymers based on bridged phenylenes, namely, poly(2,7-fluorene)s, poly(2,7-carbazole)s, and poly(2,7-dibenzosilole)s, for applications in solar cells and white-light-emitting diodes. The main strategies and remaining challenges in the development of reliable and low-cost renewable sources of energy and energy-saving lighting devices are discussed.
