Abstract
Owing to the environmental concern worldwide and also due to cost, time and labour issues, use of one-pot reactions [domino/cascade/tandem/multi-component (MC) or sequential] has gained much attention among the scientific and industrial communities for the generation of compound libraries having different scaffolds. Inclusion of sugars in such compounds is expected to increase the pharmacological efficacy because of the possibility of better interactions with the receptors of such unnatural glycoconjugates. In many of the one-pot transformations, the presence of a metal salt/complex can improve the reaction/change the course of reaction with remarkable increase in chemo-/regio-/stereo-selectivity. On the other hand because of the importance of natural polymeric glycoconjugates in life processes, the development and efficient synthesis of related oligosaccharides, particularly utilising one-pot MC-glycosylation techniques are necessary. The present review is an endeavour to discuss one-pot transformations involving carbohydrates catalysed by a metal salt/complex.

Abstract
Tunable aryl imidazolium ionic liquids acting as Brønsted acid ionic liquids were found to be efficient catalysts for per-O-acetylation and reductive ring opening of benzylidene acetals. This method requires a truly catalytic amount of the least expensive available ionic liquids that are water-stable and reusable and also stable at room temperature. The reactions were obtained in one hour with good to excellent yields. These reactions can form C−O and C−H bonds with a high atom economy. Furthermore, the ionic liquid is an anomeric selective catalyst in per-O-acetylation and reductive ring opening of benzylidene acetals of sugar moieties.

Abstract
The N-bromosuccinimide mediated fragmentation of methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-beta-D-galactopyranoside results in the formation of methyl 4-O-benzoyl-6-bromo-6-deoxy-beta-D-galactopyranoside and methyl 4-O-benzoyl-3-bromo-3-deoxy-beta-D-gulopyranoside, as opposed to the methyl 6-O-benzoyl-3-bromo-3-deoxy-beta-D-gulopyranoside originally reported. The kinetic methyl 4-O-benzoyl-6-bromo-6-deoxy-beta-D-galactopyranoside rearranges to the thermodynamic methyl 4-O-benzoyl-3-bromo-3-deoxy-beta-D-gulopyranoside under the reaction conditions, likely via a 3,6-anhydro galactopyranoside. The NBS-mediated cleavage of 4,6-O-benzylidene acetals in the galactopyranoside series is therefore shown to conform to the regiochemistry observed in the corresponding gluco- and mannopyranoside series with preferential cleavage of the C6-O6 bond by an ionic mechanism.

Abstract
The synthesis of d- and l-glycero-alpha-manno-thioheptopyranosides, protected with 4,6-O-alkylidene-type acetals is described. In glycosylations carried out with preactivation with the 1-benzenesulfinylpiperidine/trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride couple, both the D- and L-glycero series exhibit excellent beta-selectivity with a range of glycosyl acceptors. In contrast, a 4,7-O-alkylidene acetal was found not to afford beta-selectivity. With a 4,6-O-[1-cyano-2-(2-iodophenyl)ethylidene] acetal protected thioglycoside, excellent beta-selectivity was obtained in glycosylation reactions, and subsequent treatment with tributyltin hydride and azoisobutyronitrile brought about clean fragmentation to the 6-deoxy-glycero-beta-D-manno-heptopyranosides. This chemistry was applied to the stereocontrolled synthesis of methyl alpha-L-rhamno-pyranosyl-(1-->3)-D-glycero-beta-D-manno-heptopyranosyl-(1-->3)-6-deoxy-glycero-beta-D-manno-heptopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamno-pyranoside, a component of the lipopolysaccharide from Plesimonas shigelloides.

Abstract
The regioselective ring opening of pyranosidic 4,6-p-methoxybenzylidene acetals with BH(3)/Bu(2)BOTf in THF can be tuned by adjusting the reaction temperature and reagent concentrations. Reductive cleavage at 0 degrees C resulted in the exclusive formation of 4-O-p-methoxybenzyl (PMB) ethers, whereas reaction at -78 degrees C produced 6-O-PMB ethers in high yields. The latter condition was observed to be compatible with a variety of acid-sensitive functional groups, including allyl and enol ethers. The presence of water does not interfere with reductive ring opening and may contribute toward in situ generation of H(+) as a catalyst for 6-O-PMB ether formation. Reductive cleavage under rigorously aprotic conditions is greatly decelerated, and yields only the 4-O-PMB ether. The temperature-dependent reductive cleavage of the 4,6-acetal can be described in terms of kinetic versus thermodynamic control: Lewis-acid coordination of the more accessible O-6 is favored at higher temperatures, whereas protonation of the more basic but sterically encumbered O-4 predominates at low temperatures.

Abstract
The cis axial/equatorial OH groups of methyl alpha-L- and ethyl 1-thio-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside, 1,6-anhydro-beta-D-mannopyranose, and 1,6-anhydro-beta-D-galactopyranose were reacted with 2-naphthaldehyde dimethyl acetal to diastereomeric dioxolane-type 2,3-O-(2-naphthyl)methylene or 3,4-O-(2-naphthyl)methylene acetals. The glycosides yielded the exo- and endo-isomers in nearly 1:1 ratio, 1,6-anhydro-beta-D-mannopyranose gave predominantly the endo-, and 1,6-anhydro-beta-D-galactopyranose exclusively endo-isomer. The acetals and some of their fully protected derivatives bearing benzyl or tert-butyldimethylsilyl groups were hydrogenolised with AlH(3) (3LiAlH(4)-AlCl(3)) or with Me(3)N.BH(3)-AlCl(3) reagents. The endo-isomers were cleaved by both reagents to give axial NAP ethers, the exo-isomers of pyranosides furnished equatorial NAP ethers. However, the exo-isomers of pyranoses gave irregular axial ethers with a > 30-fold enhancement of the reaction rates with respect to the endo-isomer.

Abstract
The proton-catalyzed addition of 2-methoxypropene to alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins resulted in hexakis-, heptakis-, and octakis[2,6-di-O-(methoxydimethyl)methyl]-alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins, but no reaction was observed of CD-s with 2,2-dimethoxypropane. The mixed acetal-type compounds can be alkylated under basic conditions. The preparation of hexakis(3-O-benzyl)-alpha-cyclodextrin demonstrates the synthetic value of this methodology.

Abstract
A new class of carboxylic acid derivatives of sugars is described. Acetalation of mono- and disaccharides with a functionalized vinylic ether or a diethoxybutanoate afforded mono- and diacetals bearing an ester group. Their saponification led to the corresponding carboxylic acid acetals in which the length of the acetal side chain can be modulated.
