Abstract
An efficient palladium-catalyzed isomerization/hydrocarbonylation of electron-deficient alkenes was developed, affording a variety of benzofuran-2(3H)-ones, dihydrofuran-2(3H)-ones, indolin-2-ones, and isochroman-3-ones in high yields. The reaction exhibits excellent regioselectivity, high atom economy, and a broad range of substrates. The late-stage modification of bioactive molecules and scaled-up reaction demonstrated the practicability of this methodology. Furthermore, the method was employed as the key step for the synthesis of an insulin degrading enzyme (IDE) activator.

Abstract
Styrene oxide isomerase (SOI) catalyzes the Meinwald rearrangement of aryl epoxides to carbonyl compounds via a 1,2-trans-shift in a stereospecific manner. A number of cascade biotransformations with SOI-catalyzed epoxide isomerization as a key step have been developed to convert readily available substrates into valuable chiral chemicals. Cascade conversion of terminal or internal alkenes into chiral acids, alcohols or amines was achieved, which involved SOI-catalyzed enantio-retentive isomerization of terminal epoxides via 1,2-H shift, or internal epoxides via 1,2-methyl shift. SOI-involved cascades were also developed to convert racemic epoxides into chiral acids or amines via dynamic kinetic resolution. Additionally, combining SOI-catalyzed isomerization with enantioselective C-C bond forming enzymes enabled the synthesis of chiral amino acids or amino alcohols from racemic epoxides. Finally, integration of SOI-involved cascades with biosynthesis pathways allowed for the direct utilization of renewable substrates for the sustainable synthesis of high-value natural chemicals such as alcohols, acids, and esters.

Abstract
Two complementary regiodivergent Pd-catalyzed assisted tandem [isomerization/Heck arylation] reactions are reported. They provide access to a broad array of acyclic trisubstituted vinyl ethers starting from readily available alkenyl ethers. In both cases, the isomerization is conducted with a [Pd-H] precatalyst supported by tris-tert-butyl phosphine ligands. When the catalyst is modified by the addition of a chelating bisphosphine ligand (dppp), an organic base (Cy2NMe), sodium acetate, and aryl triflates are used as electrophiles, the α-arylation pathway is promoted preferentially. The β-arylation pathway is favored for electron-deficient and electron-neutral aryl halides when the catalyst is simply modified by the addition of an excess of an organic base (Et3N) after completion of the isomerization reaction. Electron-rich aryl halides lead to reduced levels of regiocontrol. The moderate stereoselectivity obtained are proposed to reflect the absence of stereocontrol in the isomerization step. Computational analyses suggest that migratory insertion is selectivity-determining for both the arylations. For the β-selective arylation, an energy decomposition analysis underscored that electronic factors favor α-regioselectivity and steric effects favor β-regioselectivity. Preliminary investigations show that high levels of stereoselectivity can be achieved for the α-selective arylation by ligand control. Complementarily, reaction conditions for postcatalytic stereo-correction have also been identified for each catalytic system.

Abstract

Optically pure epoxides
are recognized as highly valuable products
and key intermediates, useful in different areas from pharmaceutical
and agrochemical industries to natural product synthesis and materials
science. The predictable fate of the ring-opening process, in terms
of stereoselectivity and often of regioselectivity, enables useful
functional groups to be installed at vicinal carbon atoms in a desired
manner. In this way, products of widespread utility either for synthetic
applications or as final products can be obtained. The advent of asymmetric
organocatalysis provided a new convenient tool, not only for their
preparation but also for the elaboration of this class of heterocycles.
In this review, we focus on recent developments of stereoselective
organocatalytic ring-opening reactions of meso-epoxides,
kinetic resolution of racemic epoxides, and Meinwald-type rearrangement.
Examples of asymmetric organocatalytic processes toward specific synthetic
targets, which include ring opening of an epoxide intermediate, are
also illustrated.

Abstract
The Meinwald rearrangement is a synthetically useful reaction but often lacks regioselectivity and stereocontrol. A significant challenge in the Meinwald rearrangement of internal epoxides is the non-regioselective migration of different substituents to give a mixture of products. Herein, an enzyme-catalyzed regioselective and stereospecific 1,2-methyl shift in the Meinwald rearrangement of internal epoxides is reported. Styrene oxide isomerase (SOI) catalyzed the unique isomerization of internal epoxides through 1,2-methyl shift without 1,2-hydride shift to give the corresponding aldehydes and a cyclic ketone as the sole product. SOI-catalyzed isomerization showed high stereospecificity, fully retaining the stereoconfiguration. The synthetic utility of this enzymatic Meinwald rearrangement was demonstrated by its incorporation into three new types of enantioselective cascades, to convert trans-β-methyl styrenes into the corresponding R-configured alcohols, acids, or amines in high ee and yield.

Abstract
Atom-economical catalytic reactions are a highly enticing strategy because all atoms of the starting materials are incorporated into the products. Catalytic hydrogenation of epoxides to alcohols is an attractive and alternative protocol to other synthetic methodologies for the synthesis of alcohols from alkenes. In the last two decades, catalytic hydrogenation of epoxides to alcohols has made remarkable progress in chemical synthesis. In this review, an overview of the catalytic hydrogenation of both terminal and internal epoxides to the corresponding alcohols is presented. An outline of both homogeneous and heterogeneous hydrogenation of epoxides to the corresponding alcohols is provided. Moreover, the selectivity, efficiency, and the reaction mechanisms of these epoxide hydrogenation reactions are highlighted.

Abstract
A Ti/Cr cooperative catalyst isomerizes aziridines to allyl amines under mild conditions. The reaction tolerates a broad range of aziridines with various nitrogen substituents. The titanium catalyst is most successful in opening 1,2-disubstituted aziridines, forming radical intermediates in a highly regioselective manner. The chromium catalyst appears to abstract an H• from these radical intermediates and then return the H• to the titanium system in the form of an H+ and an electron. The reaction is complementary to previous reports on the isomerization of aziridines to allyl amines.

Abstract
The synthesis of amides is significant in a wide variety of academic and industrial fields. We report here a new reaction, namely acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of epoxides and amines to form amides catalyzed by ruthenium pincer complexes. Various aryl epoxides and amines smoothly convert into the desired amides in high yields with the generation of H2 gas as the only byproduct. Control experiments indicate that amides are generated kinetically faster than side products, possibly because of the facile activation of epoxides by metal–ligand cooperation, as supported by the observation of a ruthenium-enolate species. No alcohol or free aldehyde are involved. A mechanism is proposed involving a dual role of the catalyst, which is responsible for the high yield and selectivity of the new reaction. We report the ruthenium pincer complex catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of epoxides and amines to form amides. The reaction offers a facile and atom economical two-step strategy for transforming alkenes into amides.![]()

Abstract
The first catalytic asymmetric multiple vinylogous addition reactions initiated by Meinwald rearrangement of vinyl epoxides were realized by employing chiral N,N'-dioxide/ScIII complex catalysts. The vinyl epoxides, as masked β,γ-unsaturated aldehydes, via direct vinylogous additions with isatins, 2-alkenoylpyridines or methyleneindolinones, provided a facile and efficient way for the synthesis of chiral 3-hydroxy-3-substituted oxindoles, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and spiro-cyclohexene indolinones, respectively with high efficiency and stereoselectivity. The control experiments and kinetic studies revealed that the Lewis acid acted as dual-tasking catalyst, controlling the initial rearrangement to match subsequent enantioselective vinylogous addition reactions. A catalytic cycle with a possible transition model was proposed to illustrate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Due to their inherent ring strain and electrophilicity, epoxides are highly attractive building blocks for fundamental organic reactions. However, controlling the regioselectivity of disubstituted epoxide transformations is often particularly challenging. Most Lewis acid-mediated processes take advantage of intrinsic steric or electronic substrate bias to influence the site of nucleophilic attack. Therefore, the scope of many of these systems is frequently quite limited. Recent efforts to generate catalysts that can overcome substrate bias have expanded the synthetic utility of these well-known reactions. In this Perspective, we highlight various regioselective transformations of disubstituted epoxides, emphasizing those that have inspired the production of challenging, catalyst-controlled processes.

Abstract
A magnesium-catalyzed regiodivergent C-O bond cleavage protocol is presented. Readily available magnesium catalysts achieve the selective hydroboration of a wide range of epoxides and oxetanes yielding secondary and tertiary alcohols in excellent yields and regioselectivities. Experimental mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations provide insight into the unexpected regiodivergence and explain the different mechanisms of the C-O bond activation and product formation.

Abstract
A straightforward methodology for the synthesis of anti-Markovnikov-type alcohols is presented. By using a specific cobalt triphos complex in the presence of Zn(OTf)2 as an additive, the hydrogenation of epoxides proceeds with high yields and selectivities. The described protocol shows a broad substrate scope, including multi-substituted internal and terminal epoxides, as well as a good functional-group tolerance. Various natural-product derivatives, including steroids, terpenoids, and sesquiterpenoids, gave access to the corresponding alcohols in moderate-to-excellent yields.

Abstract
P,C-Stereogenic propargyl alcohols RC-3/SC-3' were prepared by the addition of (L)-menthyl-derived SPOs to propynals, which were converted to P,axial-stereogenic allenyl bisphosphine oxides. The chirality transfer was controlled by α-carbon via syn [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. For SC-3' linking weak WDG on the alkynyl moiety, the chirality on the axis depended on stereogenic phosphorus.

Abstract
A straightforward flow synthesis of α-chloro aldehydes has been developed. The strategy involves, for the first time, the thermal unstable chloroiodomethyllithium carbenoid and carbonyl compounds. A batch versus flow comparative study showcases the superb capability of flow technology in prolonging the lifetime of the lithiated carbenoid, even at -20 °C. Remarkably, the high chemoselectivity realized in flow allowed for preparing polyfunctionalized α-chloro aldehydes not easily accessible with traditional batch procedures.

Abstract
The combination of a Pd(0) complex with benzoic acid in the presence of D2O enables the synthesis of valuable families of highly deuterated organics through elaborate sequential reactions. The catalytic system can convert 2-butyne fragments into the corresponding d-dienamides, which can then readily deliver labeled polycyclic quinone motifs. Propargylated tryptamines lead to formation of highly enriched tetrahydrocarbolines through the C-H activation of their unprotected indole ring. Mechanistic studies reveal the ordered series of events that regulate the outcome of these complex reactions, which include multiple, sequential and selective H/D scrambling from the cheapest and safest deuterium source.

Abstract
The Crabtree's reagent catalyzes the isomerization of N-sulfonyl 2,2-disubstituted aziridines to allyl amines. The selectivity of allyl amine vs imine is very high (up to 99/1). The unprecedented isomerization takes place in mild conditions without activation of the catalyst by hydrogen. The mechanism has been studied computationally by DFT calculations; instead of the usual hydrogenation of COD, the catalytic species is formed by a loss of the pyridine ligand. Approaching of aziridine to this unsaturated species leads to a carbocation intermediate through a low energy barrier. A metal-mediated tautomerization involving sequentially γ-H elimination and N-H reductive elimination affords selectively the allyl amine. The readiness of the CγH bond to participate in the H elimination step accounts for the selectivity toward the allyl amine product.

Abstract
Phenol, an important industrial chemical, is widely produced using the well-developed cumene process. However, demand for the development of a novel alternative method for synthesizing phenol from benzene has been increasing. Herein, we report a novel system for the synthesis of phenols through aerobic oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexanols and cyclohexanones, including ketone-alcohol (KA) oil, catalyzed by Mg-Al-layered double hydroxide (LDH)-supported Au-Pd alloy nanoparticles (Au-Pd/LDH). Alloying of Au and Pd and basicity of LDH are key factors in achieving the present transformation. Although monometallic Au/LDH, Pd/LDH, and their physical mixture showed almost no catalytic activity, Au-Pd/LDH exhibited markedly high catalytic activity for the dehydrogenative phenol production. Mechanistic studies showed that β-H elimination from Pd-enolate species is accelerated by Au species, likely via electronic ligand effects. Moreover, the effect of supports was critical; despite the high catalytic performance of Au-Pd/LDH, Au-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles supported on Al2O3, TiO2, MgO, and CeO2 were ineffective. Thus, the basicity of LDH plays a deterministic role in the present dehydrogenation possibly through its assistance in the deprotonation steps. The synthetic scope of the Au-Pd/LDH-catalyzed system was very broad; various substituted cyclohexanols and cyclohexanones were efficiently converted into the corresponding phenols, and N-substituted anilines were synthesized from cyclohexanones and amines. In addition, the observed catalysis was truly heterogeneous, and Au-Pd/LDH could be reused without substantial loss of its high performance. The present transformation is scalable, utilizes O2 in air as the terminal oxidant, and generates water as the only by-product, highlighting the potential practical utility and environmentally benign nature of the present transformation. Dehydrogenative aromatization of cyclohexanols proceeds through (1) oxidation of cyclohexanols to cyclohexanones; (2) dehydrogenation of cyclohexanones to cyclohexenones; and (3) disproportionation of cyclohexenones to afford the desired phenols. In the present Au-Pd/LDH-catalyzed transformation, the oxidation of the Pd-H species is included in the rate-determining step.
