Abstract
The synergistic effect of protein-silica complexation leads to exacerbated membrane fouling in the membrane desalination process, exceeding the individual impacts of silica scaling or protein fouling. However, the molecular-level dynamics of silica binding to proteins and the resulting structural changes in both proteins and silica remain poorly understood. This study investigates the complexation process between silica and proteins-negatively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA) and positively charged lysozyme (LYZ) at neutral pH-using infrared spectroscopy (IR), in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and multiple computational simulations. The findings reveal that both protein and silica structures undergo changes during the complexation process, with calcium ions in the solution significantly exacerbating these alterations. In particular, in situ ATR-FTIR combined with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analysis shows that BSA experiences more pronounced unfolding, providing additional binding sites for silica adsorption compared to LYZ. The adsorbed proteins promote silica polymerization from lower-polymerized to higher-polymerized species. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate greater conformational variation in BSA through root-mean-square-deviation analysis and the bridging role of calcium ions via mean square displacement analysis. Molecular docking and density functional theory calculations identify the binding sites and energy of silica on proteins. In summary, this research offers a comprehensive understanding of the protein-silica complexation process, contributing to the knowledge of synergistic behaviors of inorganic scaling and organic fouling on membrane surfaces. The integrated approach used here may also be applicable for exploring other complex complexation processes in various environments.

Abstract
Generating electricity from a salinity gradient, known as osmotic power, provides a sustainable energy source, but it requires precise nanoscale control of membranes for maximum performance. Here, we report an ultrathin membrane, where molecule-specific short-range interactions enable giant gateable osmotic power with a record high power density (2 kW/m2 for 1 M∥1 mM KCl). Our membranes are charge-neutral two-dimensional polymers synthesized from molecular building blocks and operate in a Goldilocks regime that simultaneously maintains high ionic conductivity and permselectivity. Molecular dynamics simulations quantitatively confirm that the functionalized nanopores are small enough for high selectivity through short-range ion-membrane interactions and large enough for fast cross-membrane transport. The short-range mechanism further enables reversible gateable operation, as demonstrated by polarity switching of osmotic power with additional gating ions.

Abstract
We explored solvent effect on the stability, dipole moment, polarizability and first hyperpolarizability of Fe(CO)4B12N12 complexes at MPW1PW91/6-311G(d,p) level of theory. These complexes were considered in the low spin states. The self-consistent reaction field theory (SCRF) based on conductor-like polarizable continuum model (PCM) was employed to illustration of the solvent influences. The relations between the parameters with solvent polarity functions (McRae and Suppan functions) were given. Also, relations of the wavenumbers values of the stretching of carbonyl ligands with the Kirkwood–Bauer–Magat equation (KBM) were provided.

Abstract
The interaction potential energy surfaces (IPESs) of four alkaline metal cations (Na+, K+, Rb+ and Cs+) complexed with phenol and catechol were explored by accurate ab initio calculations to investigate the interplay of different noncovalent interactions and their behavior along the alkali metal series and upon -OH substitution. Selected one-dimensional interaction energy curves revealed two different minimum energy configurations for all phenol- and catechol-metal complexes, characterized either by cation-π or σ-type interactions. For each investigated complex several two-dimensional IPES maps were also computed, exploiting the computational advantages of the MP2mod approach. The size of the alkali cation was found to play a similar role in modulating both kinds of complexes, as the interaction strength always decreases along the metal series, from Na+ to Cs+. Conversely, the number of hydroxyl substituents markedly affected cation-π complexes vs. σ-type ones. As a most relevant finding, in catechol-metal complexes the strength of cation-π interactions is around half that of the σ-type ones. It is argued that the combined effect of cation dimensions and hydroxyl substitution in catechol-Na+ complexes makes σ-type configurations remarkably more stable and easily accessible than cation-π ones. Besides shedding new light on the origin of biological phenomena connected with underwater adhesion, the quantum mechanical interaction energy database provided herein may offer a useful reference for tuning accurate force fields, suitable for molecular dynamics simulations, where environmental effects might be also taken into account.

Abstract
The ground and lowest singlet excited state geometries of selected ( para-C5H4X)Ir(PH3)3 iridabenzene complexes ( para-substituent = NH2, OMe, Me, H, F, Cl, CCl3, CF3, NO2) are optimized using the MPW1PW91 procedure employing the LanL2DZ(Ir) and 6-311G(d, p) (C, H, N, O, P, F, Cl, P) basis sets. The excited state is generated using the time-dependent density function method. The effects of electron-donating groups and electron-withdrawing groups on the energy, atomization energy, rotational constants, and frontier orbital energies in the first singlet excited state (S1) of iridabenzene are investigated and compared to those of the ground state (S0). The Ir–C and Ir–P bonds in the studied molecules are analyzed by electron localization function and localized-orbital locator methods. The correlations between the Ir-C and Ir–P bond distances, electron localization function, and localized-orbital locator values Hammett constants (σp) and dual parameters (σI and σR) are given for the two studied states. The para-delocalization index is used for investigation of the aromaticity of the studied complexes.

Abstract
Heme catabolism is an important physiological process that converts heme to biliverdin in the presence of heme oxygenase which has an essential role in destroying unwanted heme. Verdohemes, the green iron (II) complexes of the 5-oxaporphyrin macrocycle are produced by oxidative destruction of heme. The main goal of this study is clarification of the central metal effect on stabilization of metal 5-oxaporphyrin molecules. To investigate the role of central metal on geometric and electronic properties of five coordinated verdoheme analogues, the first row transitional metals, including Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, as the central metal of five-coordinated metal 5-oxaporphyrins were systematically calculated without any symmetry constraint by using the B3LYP as DFT method and the 6-31G basis set in gas and solvent phases. According to the results, the stabilization energy of metal 5-oxaporphyrins increases with atomic mass in the solvent phase more than in the gas phase. By reviewing the properties such as the computed frontier orbital energy, HOMO and LUMO gap energy [Formula: see text], hardness [Formula: see text], chemical potential [Formula: see text], softness (s) and electrophilicity [Formula: see text], the pharmaceutical use of this compound can be discussed.

Abstract
This study used mpw1pw91 quantum chemical calculations in gas and solution phases to clarify the interaction between C20and Cr(CO)5fragment. It also sought to clarify the effects of solvent polarity on dipole moment, structural parameters, and frontier orbital energies of the complex. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) was applied to analyze the bonding interaction between the C20and Cr(CO)5fragment. Percentage composition in terms of the defined groups of frontier orbitals for the complex was evaluated to characterize the metal–ligand bonds. The Cr–C bonds within the complex were examined using quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis. In order to determine the back-bonding effects in these bonds, QTAIM analysis was applied to calculate of the quadrupole polarization of the carbon atom.

Abstract
The experimental aspects of the determination of thermochemical data for the attachment of the aluminum monocation Al(+) to neutral atoms and molecules are reviewed. Literature aluminum cation affinities (enthalpy scale) and basicities (Gibbs energy scale) are tabulated and discussed. Ab initio quantum chemical calculations at the G4 level on 43 adducts provide a consistent picture of the energetics of the adducts and their structures. The Al(+)-ligand bonding is analyzed in terms of natural bond orbital and atom-in molecule analyses. A brief comparison of the Al(+) basicity scales and other gas- phase cation basicities is presented.

Abstract
The structure and properties of a terminal borylene ruthenium complexes Ru ( PH 3)2 HCl ( BC 6 H 4X) have been investigated using theoretical methods. Frontier orbital analysis indicates the HOMO is distributed on the Ru and Cl ligand. On the other hand, LUMO is distributed on the Ru and phenyl ligand. The influence of solvent on the structure and properties of X = H structure has been studied. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) is used to calculate the energy, oscillatory strength and wavelength absorption maxima (λmax) of various electronic transitions and their nature within molecules. Nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of title compounds is investigated by the computed value of first hyperpolarizability (βtotal).

Abstract
Energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (CID) of seven silver cation-ligand complexes, Ag(+)(L), with Xe is studied using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry techniques. The ligands, L, investigated are monomeric building blocks of polyethers and polyphenols including phenol, 2-hydroxyphenol, 3-hydroxyphenol, 4-hydroxyphenol, 2-hydroxymethyl phenol, 3-hydroxymethyl phenol, and 4-hydroxymethyl phenol. In all cases, Ag(+) is observed as the primary CID product, corresponding to endothermic loss of the intact neutral ligand. The kinetic-energy-dependent cross sections for CID of these Ag(+)(L) complexes are analyzed using an empirical threshold law to extract absolute 0 and 298 K Ag(+)-L bond dissociation energies (BDEs). Density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory are used to determine the structures of the neutral ligands and their complexes to Ag(+) using either the Stuttgart RSC 1997 valence basis set and effective core potential (SRSC ECP) or DZVP-DFT to describe Ag(+). Theoretical BDEs are determined at the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,2p) level of theory again using the SRSC ECP or DZVP-DFT for Ag(+). For all systems, the most stable binding conformations found involve cation-π interactions when the SRSC ECP is used to describe Ag(+). When DZVP-DFT is employed, the most stable binding geometries remain cation-π complexes except for the complex to 2HP, where the ground-state conformer involves bidentate binding of Ag(+) to the hydroxyl oxygen atoms of both substituents. The agreement between the measured and calculated BDEs is excellent with a MAD of 2.9 ± 1.7 kJ/mol when the SRSC ECP is used to describe Ag(+) and less satisfactory for DZVP-DFT, which underestimates the strength of binding in these systems by ~14% or 26.0 ± 6.7 kJ/mol.

Abstract
The isolated pyridine-Ag(+)-pyridine unit (Py-Ag(+)-Py) is employed as a model system to characterize the recently observed Ag(+)-mediated base pairing in DNA oligonucleotides at the molecular level. The structure and infrared (IR) spectrum of the Ag(+)-Py(2) cationic complex are investigated in the gas phase by IR multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations to determine the preferred metal-ion binding site and other salient properties of the potential-energy surface. The IRMPD spectrum has been obtained in the 840-1720 cm(-1) fingerprint region by coupling the IR free electron laser at the Centre Laser Infrarouge d'Orsay (CLIO) with a Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization source. The spectroscopic results are interpreted with quantum chemical calculations conducted at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The analysis of the IRMPD spectrum is consistent with a σ complex, in which the Ag(+) ion binds to the nitrogen lone pairs of the two Py ligands in a linear configuration. The binding motif of Py-Ag(+)-Py in the gas phase is the same as that observed in Ag(+)-mediated base pairing in solution. Ag(+) bonding to the π-electron system of the aromatic ring is predicted to be a substantially less-favorable binding motif.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound found in plants and human foods which has shown biological activities including chemoprevention, acting through a mechanism which involves the reduction of Cu(II) species. By electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry we have produced and detected the resveratrol-copper complexes [Resv+Cu](+), [Resv+Cu+H(2)O](+) and [2Resv+Cu](+) by using a resveratrol/CuSO(4) solution in CH(3)CN/H(2)O. The most stable structures of the detected complexes have been calculated at the B3LYP/6-311G(d) level of theory. Resveratrol interacts with the copper ion through nucleophilic carbon atoms on the aromatic ring and the alkenyl group. The fact that only singly charged ions were observed implies that Cu(II) is reduced to Cu(I) in the ESI process. For investigating the structure-reactivity correlation, we have carried out a similar study on the synthetic analogue dihydroresveratrol (DHResv). For the latter only the [DHResv+Cu](+) complex has been detected.
