Abstract
New and simple ligand design strategies for the preparation of versatile metal-based catalysts capable of operating under greener and eco-friendly conditions in several industrially attractive processes are in high demand for society development. We present the first nucleophilic addition of an organolithium to ketenimines which incorporates a stereogenic centre in an N-donor atom to prepare new enantiopure NNN-donor scorpionates. We have also verified its potential utility as a valuable scaffold for chirality induction through the preparation of inexpensive, non-toxic and asymmetric zinc complexes. The pro-ligands and the corresponding zinc-based complexes have been characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. DFT studies were carried out to rationalize the different complexation abilities of these pro-ligands. These complexes have proved to act as highly efficient catalysts for a variety of sustainable bioresourced processes that are industrially attractive, with a wide substrate scope. Thus, complex 7 behaves as a highly efficient initiator for the well-behaved living ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide under very mild conditions. The PLA materials produced exhibited enhanced levels of isoselectivity, comparable to the highest value reported so far for zinc-based catalysts (Pi = 0.88). In addition, the combination of 7 with onium halide salts functioned as a very active and selective catalyst for CO2 fixation into five-membered cyclic carbonates through the cycloaddition of CO2 into epoxides under very mild and solvent-free conditions, reaching very good to excellent conversions (TOF = 227 h-1). Furthermore, this bicomponent system exhibits a broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance, including mono- and di-substituted epoxides, as well as the very challenging bio-renewable tri-substituted terpene-derived cis/trans-limonene oxide, whose reaction proceeds with high stereoselectivity. Finally, complex 7 also achieved high activity and selectivity as a one-component initiator for the synthesis of poly(cyclohexene carbonate)s via ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of cyclohexene oxide and CO2 under very soft conditions, affording materials with narrow dispersity values.

Abstract
Bis(pyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid (HC(pz)2COOH) and bis(3,5-dimethyl-pyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid (HC(pzMe2)2COOH) were converted into the methyl ester derivatives 1 (LOMe) and 2 (L2OMe), respectively, and were used for the preparation of silver(I) complexes 3-5. The Ag(I) complexes were prepared by the reaction of AgNO3 and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) or triphenylphosphine (PPh3) with LOMe and L2OMe in methanol solution. All Ag(I) complexes showed a significant in vitro antitumor activity, proving to be more effective than the reference drug cisplatin in the in-house human cancer cell line panel containing examples of different solid tumors. Compounds were particularly effective against the highly aggressive and intrinsically resistant human small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) cells, either in 2D and 3D cancer cell models. Mechanistic studies revealed their ability to accumulate into cancer cells and to selectively target Thioredoxin (TrxR), thus leading to redox homeostasis unbalance and ultimately inducing cancer cell death through apoptosis.

Abstract
Bis(4-carboxylpyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid (H3bcpza) (2), obtained in a one-pot synthesis, contains carboxyl groups that differ in their pKa values. The ligand exhibits heteroscorpionate κ3-N,N,O-coordination whereupon the peripheral carboxyl groups are not involved in metal binding. The corresponding carbonyl complexes [Mn(H2bcpza)(CO)3] (4), [Re(H2bcpza)(CO)3] (5) and [Ru(H2bcpza)Cl(CO)2] (6a/6b) are partially soluble in water but readily soluble in PBS buffer.

Abstract
A new dimeric copper(II) bromide complex, [Cu(LOHex)Br(μ-Br)]2 (1), was prepared by a reaction of CuBr2 with the hexyl bis(pyrazol-1-yl)acetate ligand (LOHex) in acetonitrile solution and fully characterized in the solid state and in solution. The crystal structure of 1 was also determined: the complex is interlinked by two bridging bromide ligands and possesses terminal bromide ligands on each copper atom. The two pyrazolyl ligands in 1 coordinate with the nitrogen atoms to complete the Cu coordination sphere, resulting in a five-coordinated geometry—away from idealized trigonal bipyramidal and square pyramidal geometries—which can better be described as distorted square pyramidal, as measured by the τ and χ structural parameters. The pendant hexyloxy chain is disordered over two arrangements, with final site occupancies refined to 0.705 and 0.295. The newly synthesized complex was evaluated as a catalyst in copper-catalyzed C–H oxidation for allylic functionalization through a Kharasch–Sosnovsky reaction without any external reducing agent. Using 0.5 mol% of this catalyst, and tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (Luperox) as an oxidant, allylic benzoates were obtained with up to 90% yield. The general reaction time was only slightly decreased to 24 h but a very significant decrease in the alkene:Luperox ratio to 3:1 was achieved. These factors show relevant improvements with respect to classical Kharasch–Sosnovsky reactions in terms of rate and amount of reagents. The present study highlights the potential of copper(II) complexes containing functionalized bis(pyrazol-1-yl)acetate ligands as efficient catalysts for allylic oxidations.

Abstract
In this study, two new hexyl bis(pyrazol-1-yl)acetate ligands and related copper(ii) complexes were prepared and fully characterized in the solid state and in solution. Their electronic and molecular structures were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near edge X-ray absorption; their ligand molecular structural stability upon coordination to copper was also investigated. The Cu(ii) complexes were studied as new catalysts in copper-catalyzed C-H oxidation for allylic functionalization (the Kharasch-Sosnovsky reaction) avoiding the use of any external reducing agents. Using 5 mol% of these catalysts and tert-butylperoxybenzoate as the oxidant, allylic benzoates were obtained in up to 90% yield: the general reaction time was decreased to 6 h and a 5 to 1 ratio of the alkene and tert-butylperoxybenzoate was used to overcome the two most important limitations on their use in chemistry.

Abstract
In the present article, copper(I) complexes of bis(pyrazol-1-yl) carboxylic acid (LH), bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl) carboxylic acid (L2H), and bis(pyrazol-1-yl) acetates conjugated with an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist (LNMDA or L2NMDA) and phosphane ligands (triphenylphosphine or 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) were synthesized. The selection of an NMDA antagonist for the coupling with LH and L2H was suggested by the observation that NMDA receptors are expressed and play a role in different types of cancer models. All the new complexes showed a significant antitumor activity on a panel of human tumor cell lines of different histology, with cisplatin-sensitive, cisplatin-resistant, or multi-drug-resistant phenotype. Their half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values were in the low- and sub-micromolar range and, in general, significantly lower than that of cisplatin. Interestingly, the fact that all the complexes proved to be significantly more active than cisplatin even in three-dimensional (3D) spheroids of H157 and BxPC3 cancer cells increased the relevance of the in vitro results. Finally, morphological analysis revealed that the most representative complex 8 induced a massive swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane, which is a clear sign of ER stress.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterisation and reactivity of new phosphine-functionalised tris(pyrazolyl)methane ligands (TpmPR2, 2a-c, with R = Ph, nBu, iPr) are presented. The reaction of 2a-c with [Rh(CO)2Cl]2 furnished N,P-heterochelate carbonyl complexes (3a-c), which were used to quantify the donor abilities of the ligands via IR spectroscopy. The coordination flexibility was demonstrated by treating representative members of this new ligand class with [CpRu(acn)3][PF6] (acn = acetonitrile), [(tht)AuCl] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) and [Pd(allyl)Cl]2 providing either a N,N,P-heteroscorpionate complex (4) or the P-coordinated complexes (5,6) without any involvement of the pyrazolyl entities. With 2a and [Pd(cod)Cl2], another P,N-heterochelate complex (7) was obtained, which served as a precursor for a heterobimetallic complex containing palladium and copper (8). Detailed NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic investigations have been performed on all new complexes.

Abstract
Copper(II) complexes of bis(pyrazol-1-yl)- and bis(triazol-1-yl)-acetate heteroscorpionate ligands have been synthesized. The copper(II) complexes [HC(COOH)(pzMe2)2]Cu[HC(COO)(pzMe2)2]·ClO4, [HC(COOH)(pz)2]2Cu(ClO4)2 (pzMe2 = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole; pz = pyrazole) were prepared by the reaction of Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O with bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid (HC(COOH)(pzMe2)2) and bis(pyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid (HC(COOH)(pz)2) ligands in ethanol solution. The copper(II) complex [HC(COOH)(tz)2]2Cu(ClO4)2·CH3OH (tz = 1,2,4-triazole) was prepared by the reaction of Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O with bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)acetic acid (HC(COOH)(tz)2) ligand in methanol solution. The synthesized Cu(II) complexes, as well as the corresponding uncoordinated ligands, were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity in monolayer and 3D spheroid cancer cell cultures with different Pt(II)-sensitivity. The results showed that [HC(COOH)(pzMe2)2]Cu[HC(COO)(pzMe2)2]·ClO4 was active against cancer cell lines derived from solid tumors at low IC50 and this effect was retained in the spheroid model. Structure and ultra-structure changes of treated cancer cells analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) highlighted the induction of a cytoplasmic vacuolization, thus suggesting paraptotic-like cancer cell death triggering.

Abstract
A new ditopic ligand, N-(2,2-bis(pyrazolyl)ethyl)-2,2-bis(pyrazolyl)acetamide ((pz)2CH-C(O)-NH-CH2-CH(pz)2, L4Pz, pz = pyrazolyl ring), comprising two bis(pyrazolyl)methane donor groups linked via an amide bridge, has been prepared from the reaction of HOOCCH(pz)2 and H2NCH2CH(pz)2. The ligand coordinates to various metallic salts (i.e. AgO3SCF3, PdCl2, Re(CO)5Br, and Fe(BF4)2), in either a κ2-μ-κ2 or a κ3-μ-κ2 fashion, depending on the coordination preferences of the metallic center. These compounds were characterized by NMR, UV-Vis and IR spectroscopy, and in solid state by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the case of silver(i), a mono-dimensional coordination polymer was obtained, while the others were found to be discrete complexes. The synthesis and characterization of a heterobimetallic complex is also described. In solid state, all compounds are associated into supramolecular architectures via hydrogen bonding and pyrazolyl embrace interactions.

Syntheses and biological studies of nitroimidazole conjugated heteroscorpionate ligands and related Cu(I) and Cu(II) complexes. J Inorg Biochem 2018; 187:33-40. Abstract
Copper(I) and copper(II) complexes of 5-nitroimidazole conjugated heteroscorpionate ligands have been synthesized. In particular, the new 2,2-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)-N-(2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl)acetamide ligand (LHMN) was synthesized by direct coupling of preformed side chain acid with 5-nitroimidazole and its coordination chemistry was investigated towards Cu(I) and Cu(II) acceptors and compared with that of the related 2,2-bis(3,5-dimethyl-1-H-pyrazol-1-yl)-N-(2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl)acetamide ligand (LMeMN). The copper(II) complexes {[(LMeMN)2Cu]Cl2} and {[(LHMN)2Cu]Cl2} were prepared by the reaction of CuCl2·2H2O with LHMN or LMeMN ligands in methanol solution. The water soluble copper(I) complexes {[(LMeMN)Cu(PTA)2]}(PF6) and {[(LHMN)Cu(PTA)2]}(PF6) were prepared by the reaction of Cu(CH3CN)4PF6 and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) with LHMN or LMeMN ligands in acetonitrile solution. The new Cu(I) and Cu(II) complexes as well as the corresponding uncoordinated ligands were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against 2D monolayer cultures of multiple human cancer cell lines and 3D-cultured HCT-15 colon cancer spheroids. Morphological analysis by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) revealed the induction of a massive cytoplasmic vacuolization consistent with a paraptotic-like cancer cell death.

Abstract
The synthesis, structural aspects, magnetic interpretation and theoretical rationalizations for a new member of the ferric wheel family, a decanuclear iron(iii) complex with the formula [Fe10(bdtbpza)10(μ2-OCH3)20] (1), featuring the N,N,O tridentate bis(3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate ligand, are reported. The influence of the steric effect on both the core geometry and coordination mode is observed. Temperature dependent (2.0-300 K range) magnetic susceptibility studies carried out on complexes 1 established unequivocally antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions between high-spin iron(iii) centers (S = 5/2), leading to a ground state S = 0. The mechanism of AF intramolecular coupling was proved using a broken-symmetry approach within the density functional method at the B3LYP/def2-TZVP(-f)/def2-SVP level of theory.

Abstract
The coordination behavior and reactivity of the phenol-substituted bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligands, (3,5-(t)Bu(2)-2-phenol)bis(3,5-Me(2)-pyrazol-1-yl)methane (L1-H) and 2-phenol-bis(3,5-Me(2)-pyrazol-1-yl)methane (L2-H) have been investigated in the metal complexes (L1-H)CoCl(2) (1), (L1-H)ZnCl(2) (2), (L3)CuCl(2) (3), (L2)(2)Co(2)Cl(2) (4) (L2-H)ZnCl(2) (5), and (L2-H)CuCl(2)·H(2)O (6). The mononuclear tetrahedral cobalt complex 1 was isolated and fully characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction and (1)H NMR spectroscopy and relaxometry. The neutral L1-H is κ(2)-coordinated to the metal center whereas the not coordinated hydroxy-phenyl group is involved in extended intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Aerobic oxidation of L1-H was observed in the reaction of this ligand with CuCl(2) to yield the para-quinone derivative L3 (L3 = 2-(t)Bu-6-(bis(3,5-Me(2)-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione). Upon oxidation L3 resulted κ(2)-coordinated to the tetrahedral Cu(II) metal center, affording 3. The reaction of L2-H with CoCl(2)·6H(2)O produced the elimination of 1 equiv of hydrochloric acid and the formation of the binuclear complex 4 in which one cobalt is in an octahedral environment featuring two κ(3)-coordinated deprotonated ligands whereas the second cobalt center is detected in tetrahedral coordination geometry, bound to the octahedral cobalt via two phenoxo bridging moieties. Interestingly L2-H, (3-(t)Bu-2-phenol)bis(3,5-Me(2)-pyrazol-1-yl)methane (L4-H), or (5-(t)Bu-2-phenol)bis(3,5-Me(2)-pyrazol-1-yl)methane (L5-H) were not oxidized in the reaction with CuCl(2). The reaction of the ligand L2-H with ZnCl(2) and CuCl(2)·2H(2)O yielded the κ(2)-coordinated tetrahedral complex 5 and the square planar complex 6, respectively. The application of the cobalt complex 1 as molecular dosimeter for H(2)S was explored and compared to that of the zinc analogue 2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and NMR experiments to assess the possible mechanisms of H(2)S detection by both 1 and 2 are also described.
