Abstract
Looking for sustainable synthetic methodologies, mechanochemistry as a new tool for one-step and two-step approaches for the synthesis of meso-substituted porphyrins was explored. The best results were obtained in a two-step procedure, under liquid-assisted grinding in the oxidation step using 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, an environmentally acceptable solvent, and MnO2 as a heterogeneous oxidant. The sustainability was assessed using two sustainability metrics, E-factor and EcoScale, which allow comparison between procedures and methods.

Abstract
A range of oxobis(phenyl-1,3-butanedione) vanadium(IV) complexes have been successfully synthesized from cheap starting materials and a simple and solvent-free one-pot dry-melt reaction. This direct, straightforward, fast and alternative approach to inorganic synthesis has the potential for a wide range of applications. Analytical studies confirm their successful synthesis, purity and solid-state coordination, and we report the use of such complexes as potential drug candidates for the treatment of cancer. After a 24 hour incubation of A549 lung carcinoma cells with the compounds, they reveal cytotoxicity values elevenfold greater than cisplatin and remain non-toxic towards normal cell types. Additionally, the complexes are stable over a range of physiological pH values and show the potential for interactions with bovine serum albumin.

Abstract
From the green chemistry perspective, molecular solid-state transformations conducted under mild conditions are of great interest and desirability. However, research in this area lacked popularity in the previous century, and thus progressed slowly. In particular, the application of radical reactions in solid-state chemistry has been hampered by several long-standing challenges that are intrinsically associated with the apparent unpredictable nature of radical chemistry. We present a comparative study of model mechanochemical, slow-chemistry and solution radical reactions between TEMPO and homoleptic organozinc compounds (i.e., di-tert-butylzinc and diphenylzinc). In the case of the tBu2Zn/TEMPO reaction system only a dimeric diamagnetic complex [tBuZn(μ-TEMPO*)]2 is obtained in yields slightly varying with the method chosen. In contrast, when TEMPO is mixed with diphenylzinc in a 2 : 1 molar ratio a novel paramagnetic Lewis acid-base adduct [[Ph2Zn(η1-TEMPO)]·TEMPO] is isolated in high yields regardless of the applied methodology. This adduct is also formed in the slow-chemistry process when TEMPO is gently mixed with Ph2Zn in a 1 : 1 molar ratio and left for two weeks at ambient temperature. Within the next week the reaction mixture gives in high yield a diamagnetic dinuclear compound [PhZn(μ-TEMPO*)][PhZn(μ2-η1:η1-TEMPO*)] and biphenyl. The analogous reaction conducted in toluene results in a much lower conversion rate. The reported results open up a new horizon in molecular solid-state radical transformations.

Abstract
Chitin is not only the most abundant nitrogen-containing biopolymer on the planet, but also a renewable feedstock that is often treated as a waste. Current chemical methods to break down chitin typically employ harsh conditions, large volumes of solvent, and generate a mixture of products. Although enzymatic methods have been reported, they require a harsh chemical pretreatment of the chitinous substrate and rely on dilute solution conditions that are remote from the natural environment of microbial chitinase enzymes, which typically consists of surfaces exposed to air and moisture. We report an innovative and efficient mechanoenzymatic method to hydrolyze chitin to the N-acetylglucosamine monomer by using chitinases under the recently developed reactive aging (RAging) methodology, based on repeating cycles of brief ball-milling followed by aging, in the absence of bulk solvent. Our results demonstrate that the activity of chitinases increases several times by switching from traditional solution-based conditions of enzymatic catalysis to solventless RAging, which operates on moist solid substrates. Importantly, RAging is also highly efficient for the production of N-acetylglucosamine directly from shrimp and crab shell biomass without any other processing except for a gentle wash with aqueous acetic acid.

Abstract
Aimed at eliminating or at least significantly reducing the use of solvents, sodium hypochlorite pentahydrate crystals (NaOCl·5H2O) in the presence of a catalytic amount of a nitrosyl radical (TEMPO or AZADO) have been successfully used to induce mechanochemical oxidative processes on several structurally different primary and secondary alcohols. The proposed redox process is safe, inexpensive and performing effectively, especially on the macroscale. Herein, an Ertalyte® jar has been successfully used, for the first time, in a mechanochemical process.

Abstract
The recent discovery of minerals with metal-organic framework (MOF) structures has challenged the view of MOFs as purely synthetic materials. At the same time, the application of geo-inspired synthetic methodologies, such as accelerated ageing and pseudomorphic replication, has enabled a cleaner, more environmentally friendly synthesis of MOFs from mineral-like feedstocks, as well as the assembly of materials with structure controlled at both micro- and meso-scales. These almost concomitant developments have highlighted the previously unknown relationships between geology and MOF chemistry. Here, we outline examples of MOF structures found in minerals, and note geologically inspired approaches to MOF synthesis, as a means to highlight how the emergent geomimetic concepts in MOF chemistry can lead to advances in the design and synthesis of MOFs. This article is part of the theme issue 'Mineralomimesis: natural and synthetic frameworks in science and technology'.

Abstract
This work presents a proof of concept for a green cyclodextrin derivatisation method that uses low-boiling epoxide reagents in a high-energy ball mill (HEBM). The simplified preparation and purification of low substitution-degree common (2-hydroxy)propylated β- and γ-cyclodextrins (β/γ-CDs) has been realised. The intelligent use of propylene oxide has also facilitated the more effective synthesis of highly substituted γ-CD. Epichlorohydrin-crosslinked CD-polymers (CDPs) have also been effectively prepared in the ball mill. The unoptimised preparations of soluble and insoluble CDPs displayed very small particle size distributions, while the prepared polymers currently have different complexation properties to those of their classically prepared analogues.

Abstract
Mechanochemistry is a green, solid-state, re-emerging synthetic technique that can rapidly form complex molecules and materials without exogenous heat or solvent(s). Herein, we report the application of solvent-free mechanochemical ball milling for the synthesis of metal halide perovskites, to overcome problems with solution-based syntheses. We prepared phase-pure, air-sensitive CsSnX3 (X = I, Br, Cl) and its mixed halide perovskites by mechanochemistry for the first time by reactions between cesium and tin(II) halides. Notably, we report the sole examples where metastable, high-temperature phases like cubic CsSnCl3, cubic CsPbI3, and trigonal FAPbI3 were accessible at ambient temperatures and pressures without post-synthetic processing. The perovskites can be prepared up to "kilogram scales." Lead-free, all-inorganic photodetector devices were fabricated using the mechanosynthesized CsSnBr1.5Cl1.5 under solvent-free conditions and showed 10-fold differences between on-off currents. We highlight an essentially solvent-free, general approach to synthesize metastable compounds and fabricate photodetectors from commercially available precursors.

Abstract
A number of salophen ligands and their Zn, Ni, and Pd complexes were synthesized by an efficient one-pot mechanosynthesis protocol. The reaction products were characterized by means of complementary solid-state techniques, i.e., powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Four new crystal structures of metal salophen complexes as DMSO solvates are here reported. The described simple and relatively fast (about 1 h for all derivatives) procedure is a good alternative to classical methods performed in organic solvents.

Abstract
An operationally simple one-jar one-step mechanochemical Reformatsky reaction using in situ generated organozinc intermediates under neat grinding conditions has been developed. Notable features of this reaction protocol are that it requires no solvent, no inert gases, and no pre-activation of the bulk zinc source. The developed process is demonstrated to have good substrate scope (39-82 % yield) and is effective irrespective of the initial morphology of the zinc source.

Abstract
Organic reactions that employ moisture- and/or oxygen-sensitive reagents or intermediates usually involve the use of glove-box or Schlenk-line techniques as well as dry and degassed solvents. Unfortunately, these requirements may greatly reduce the utility of the targeted organic molecules. Herein, we demonstrate that solvent-free mechanochemical synthetic techniques allow using highly oxygen-sensitive palladium(0) species in air for the stoichiometric oxidative addition of aryl halides. The low diffusion efficiency of gaseous oxygen in crystalline or amorphous solid-state reaction mixtures should be the main reason for the low impact of the presence of atmospheric oxygen on the sensitive oxidative addition reactions under the applied conditions. This study thus illustrates the outstanding potential of mechanochemistry to serve as an operationally simple, glove-box-and-Schlenk-line-free synthetic route to organometallic compounds and other valuable synthetic targets, even when sensitive reagents or intermediates are involved.

Abstract
A mechanochemical version of the asymmetric Michael-type Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with arylidene malonates was developed. The reaction proceeds under ambient atmosphere using a chiral bis(oxazoline)copper catalyst in a mixer mill. Under these reaction conditions nineteen 3-substituted indole derivatives were synthesized in good to excellent yields (up to 98 %), and with good enantioselectivities (up to 91:9 e.r.) after short milling times.

Abstract
Ca-, Sr-, and Ba-Based coordination polymers (CPs) were prepared mechanochemically by milling metal-hydroxide samples with anthranilic acid (oABAH). {[Ca(oABA)2(H2O)3]}n (1) consists of one-dimensional polymeric chains that are further connected by a hydrogen-bonding network. {[Sr(oABA)2(H2O)2]·H2O}n (2) is a one-dimensional CP in which water molecules bridge Sr2+ ions and increase the dimensionality by building an extended network. {[Ba(oABA)2(H2O)]}n (3) crystallizes as a two-dimensional CP comprising one bridging water molecule. The cation radii influence the inorganic connectivity and dimensionality of the resulting crystal structures. The crystal structures were refined from powder X-ray diffraction data using the Rietveld method. The local coordination environments were studied via extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. The compounds were further characterized using comprehensive analytical methods such as elemental analysis, thermal analysis, MAS NMR, imaging, and dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) measurements. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 exhibit small surface areas which decrease further after thermal annealing experiments. All compounds exhibit a phase transformation upon heating, which is only reversible in 3.

Abstract
The use of supramolecular synthons as a strategy to control crystalline structure is a crucial factor in developing new solid forms with physicochemical properties optimized by design. However, to achieve this objective, it is necessary to understand the intermolecular interactions in the context of crystal packing. The feasibility of a given synthon depends on its flexibility to combine the drug with a variety of coformers. In the present work, the imidazole-hydroxy synthon is investigated using as the target molecule benzoylmetronidazole [BZMD; systematic name 2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl benzoate], whose imidazole group seems to be a suitable acceptor for hydrogen bonds. Thus, coformers with carboxylic acid and phenol groups were chosen. According to the availability of binding sites presented in the coformer, and considering the proposed synthon and hydrogen-bond complementarity as major factors, different drug-coformer stoichiometric ratios were explored (1:1, 2:1 and 3:1). Thirteen new solid forms (two salts and eleven cocrystals) were produced, namely BZMD-benzoic acid (1/1), C13H13N3O4·C7H6O2, BZMD-β-naphthol (1/1), C13H13N3O4·C10H8O, BZMD-4-methoxybenzoic acid (1/1), C13H13N3O4·C8H8O3, BZMD-3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (1/1), C13H13N3O4·C7H4N2O6, BZMD-3-aminobenzoic acid (1/1), C13H13N3O4·C7H7NO2, BZMD-salicylic acid (1/1), C13H13N3O4·C7H6O3, BZMD-maleic acid (1/1) {as the salt 1-[2-(benzoyloxy)ethyl]-2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-3-ium 3-carboxyprop-2-enoate}, C13H14N3O4+·C4H3O4-, BZMD-isophthalic acid (1/1), C13H13N3O4·C8H6O4, BZMD-resorcinol (2/1), 2C13H13N3O4·C6H6O2, BZMD-fumaric acid (2/1), C13H13N3O4·0.5C4H4O4, BZMD-malonic acid (2/1), 2C13H13N3O4·C3H2O4, BZMD-2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid (1/1) {as the salt 1-[2-(benzoyloxy)ethyl]-2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-3-ium 2,6-dihydroxybenzoate}, C13H14N3O4+·C7H5O4-, and BZMD-3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3/1), 3C13H13N3O4·C7H6O4, and their crystalline structures elucidated, confirming the robustness of the selected synthon.

Abstract
We have prepared 2,5,8-tris(3,5-diethyl-pyrazolyl)-heptazine, the first highly soluble heptazine derivative possessing easily exchangeable leaving groups. We present its original synthesis employing mechanochemistry, along with a few examples of its versatile reactivity. It is, in particular, demonstrated that the pyrazolyl leaving groups can be replaced by several secondary or primary amino substituents or by three aryl- or benzyl-thiol substituents. In addition to being a synthetic platform, 2,5,8-tris(3,5-diethyl-pyrazolyl)-heptazine is fluorescent and electroactive, and its attractive properties, as well as those of the derived heptazines, are briefly presented.

Abstract
Mechanochemical polymerization is a rapidly growing area and a number of polymeric materials can now be obtained through green mechanochemical synthesis. In addition to the general merits of mechanochemistry, such as being solvent-free and resulting in high conversions, we herein explore rate acceleration under ball-milling conditions while the conventional solution-state synthesis suffer from low reactivity. The solvent-free mechanochemical polymerization of trimethylene carbonate using the organocatalysts 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) are examined herein. The polymerizations under ball-milling conditions exhibited significant rate enhancements compared to polymerizations in solution. A number of milling parameters were evaluated for the ball-milling polymerization. Temperature increases due to ball collisions and exothermic energy output did not affect the polymerization rate significantly and the initial mixing speed was important for chain-length control. Liquid-assisted grinding was applied for the synthesis of high molecular weight polymers, but it failed to protect the polymer chain from mechanical degradation.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in therapeutic peptides within the pharmaceutical industry with more than 50 peptide drugs on the market, approximately 170 in clinical trials, and >200 in preclinical development. However, the current state of the art in peptide synthesis involves primarily legacy technologies with use of large amounts of highly hazardous reagents and solvents and little focus on green chemistry and engineering. In 2016, the ACS Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Roundtable identified development of greener processes for peptide API as a critical unmet need, and as a result, a new Roundtable team formed to address this important area. The initial focus of this new team is to highlight best practices in peptide synthesis and encourage much needed innovations. In this Perspective, we aim to summarize the current challenges of peptide synthesis and purification in terms of sustainability, highlight possible solutions, and encourage synergies between academia, the pharmaceutical industry, and contract research organizations/contract manufacturing organizations.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are one of the most powerful and versatile methods to synthesize a wide range of complex functionalized molecules. However, the development of solid-state cross-coupling reactions remains extremely limited. Here, we report a rational strategy that provides a general entry to palladium-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling reactions in the solid state. The key finding of this study is that olefin additives can act as efficient molecular dispersants for the palladium-based catalyst in solid-state media to facilitate the challenging solid-state cross-coupling. Beyond the immediate utility of this protocol, our strategy could inspire the development of industrially attractive solvent-free palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling processes for other valuable synthetic targets. Cross-coupling reactions have been achieved in solution, yet tend to be inefficient in a solid state. Here, the authors report a solid-state palladium-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling using olefins as molecular dispersants, enabling reduction of solvent waste.

Abstract
Using tandem in situ monitoring and isotope-labeled solids, we reveal that mechanochemical ball-milling overcomes inherently slow solid-state diffusion through continuous comminution and growth of milled particles. This process occurs with or without a net chemical reaction and also occurs between solids and liquid additives that can be practically used for highly efficient deuterium labeling of solids. The presented findings reveal a fundamental aspect of milling reactions and also delineate a methodology that should be considered in the study of mechanochemical reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
1,1′-(1,4-Butanediyl)bis(imidazole) was prepared by a modified method and its application as an efficient promoter was demonstrated for the mechanosynthesis of N-methyl imines using ball milling as a non-conventional process under solvent-free conditions. In this new protocol design, the bis-imidazole acted as a recyclable acid-scavenging agent. This efficient approach to the N-methyl imines displays a combination of the synthetic virtues of a non-conventional condensation reaction with ecological benefits and convenience of a facile mechanosynthetic process. The current method has advantages such as reduced waste by avoiding solvent, exclusion of hazardous materials during the reaction, elimination of handling an anhydrous gas in an evacuated container or a solution of methylamine in ethanol, good yields for relatively unreactive benzaldehydes containing electron-donating substituents, short reaction times, and metal- and acid-free conditions. Furthermore, the promoter was easily regenerated and reused several times with no significant loss of activity.

Abstract
In the last few decades, mechanochemistry has become rapidly established as a powerful tool enabling environmentally-benign and sustainable chemical syntheses. Not only have these techniques been demonstrated as viable alternatives to traditional solution-based syntheses, but they have also received attention for their ability to enable new reactivity and "unlocking" novel compounds inaccessible by conventional methods. Reflecting the rising popularity of mechanochemistry, many excellent reviews highlighting its benefits have recently been published. Whilst the scope of most of these focuses on organic chemistry, transition-metal catalysis, porous framework materials, coordination compounds and supramolecular synthesis, few have addressed the use of mechanochemical ball milling for the synthesis of compounds containing s- and p-block elements. This tutorial review turns the spotlight towards mechanochemical research in the field of inorganic main group chemistry, highlighting significant advantages that solid-state inorganic reactions often possess, and the potential for these to drive the development of greener methodologies within the modern main group arena.

Abstract
Crystallographic and theoretical investigations of the assembly of bis((pyrrol-2-yl)methylene)hydrazine with Ag(i) salts suggest that, in the solid state, Ag–π interactions involve CC rather than CN pyrrolic bonds, in contrast with an earlier and unique report with this ligand.

Abstract
A mechanical ball milling method for ultrafast synthesis of a nickel-based metal organic framework (Ni-MOF) has been proposed. The Ni-MOF was successfully synthesized in merely one minute without any solvent, additives, or preliminary preparation. The effect of milling time, mechano-frequency, type of assistant liquid, and amount of assistant water were systematically explored. It was found that the product can be obtained even only at a mechano-frequency of 10 Hz within one minute without any external solvent-assist, which indicated that the crystal water present in the nickel precursor was sufficient to promote MOF formation. Increasing the milling time, raising the mechano-frequency, and the addition of assistant solvent could promote the reaction and increase the yield. The method is rapid, highly efficient, eco-friendly, and has great scalability. The product generated within merely one minute even exhibited high capacitance.

Abstract
This study demonstrates the link between the modification of the solid-phase pharmaceutical substances mechanical structure and their activity in waters with different molar ratio «deuterium-protium». Mechanochemical transformation of the powders of lactose monohydrate and sodium chloride as models of nutrients and components of dosage forms was investigated by the complex of physicochemical and biological methods. The solubility and kinetic activity of substances dispersed in various ways showed a positive correlation with the solvent isotope profile. Substances dissolved in heavy water were more active than solutes in natural water. Differential IR spectroscopy confirmed the modification of substituents in the sample of lactose monohydrate, demonstrating physicochemical changes during mechanical intervention. The biological activity of the compounds was determined by the method of Spirotox. The activation energy was determined by Arrhenius. Compared with the native compound, dispersed lactose monohydrate showed lower activation energy and, therefore, greater efficiency. In conclusion, proposed data confirm the statement that mechanical changes in compounds can lead to physicochemical changes that affect chemical and biological profiles.

Abstract
Mechanochemical ball milling catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of aromatic nitro compounds using readily available and cheap ammonium formate as the hydrogen source is demonstrated as a simple, facile and clean approach for the synthesis of substituted anilines and selected pharmaceutically relevant compounds. The scope of mechanochemical CTH is broad, as the reduction conditions tolerate various functionalities, for example nitro, amino, hydroxy, carbonyl, amide, urea, amino acid and heterocyclic. The presented methodology was also successfully integrated with other types of chemical reactions previously carried out mechanochemically, such as amide bond formation by coupling amines with acyl chlorides or anhydrides and click-type coupling reactions between amines and iso(thio)cyanates. In this way, we showed that active pharmaceutical ingredients Procainamide and Paracetamol could be synthesized from the respective nitro-precursors on milligram and gram scale in excellent isolated yields.

Abstract
The coordination sphere of early lanthanide(iii) ions is highly versatile, exhibiting the ability to form 8-, 9-, and 10-coordinate complexes with the same ligand set. The ability to isolate 10-coordinate complexes decreases across the period, and the late lanthanides typically cannot support a coordination number higher than eight. Using two common, commercially available ligands, hfac (1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato-) and bpy (2,2'-bipyridine), the 8- and 10-coordinate series Ln(hfac)3(bpy) and Ln(hfac)3(bpy)2 (Ln = La-Sm) are compiled in a single investigation, demonstrating that the desired coordination number can be targeted through stoichiometry. Solvent-free syntheses of Ln(hfac)3(bpy) and Ln(hfac)3(bpy)2 complexes from Ln(hfac)3(H2O)3 precursors are investigated using a mechanochemical approach. Structural and spectroscopic properties as well as melting point trends are reported for the series.
