Reinforcing Protein Biochemistry: A Two-Week Experiment Studying Iron(III) Binding by the Transferrin Protein through Stoichiometric Determination, Stability Analysis, and Visualization of the Binding Site

The two-week protein biochemistry experience described herein focuses on reinforcing key biochemical concepts and achieving significant learning domain accomplishments for students (Content Knowledge, Logical Mathematical Reasoning, Visualization, Information Literacy, and Knowledge Integration) and valuable teaching opportunities for instructors. The experience encompasses an exploration of the transport protein serum transferrin as an important regulator of Fe(III) biochemistry and incorporates techniques to assess protein-metal stoichiometry and protein stability and to perform molecular visualization. Students gain practical experience in utilizing spectrophotometric analysis for constructing stoichiometric curves, in performing urea-PAGE, and in applying the PyMOL program to evaluate metal coordination at a protein binding site and the associated protein structural change. The learning and teaching accomplishments provide valuable skills that can be extended into research and translated to other teaching formats.

Recently Reported Biological Activities and Action Targets of Pt(II)- and Cu(II)-Based Complexes

Most diseases that affect human beings across the world are now treated with drugs of organic origin. However, some of these are associated with side effects, toxicity, and resistance phenomena. For the treatment of many illnesses, the development of new molecules with pharmacological potential is now an urgent matter. The biological activities of metal complexes have been reported to have antitumor, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-infective and antiparasitic effects, amongst others. Metal complexes are effective because they possess unique properties. For example, the complex entity possesses the effective biological activity, then the formation of coordination bonds between the metal ions and ligands is controlled, metal ions provide it with extraordinary mechanisms of action because of characteristics such as d-orbitals, oxidation states, and specific orientations; metal complexes also exhibit good stability and good physicochemical properties such as water solubility. Platinum is a transition metal widely used in the design of drugs with antineoplastic activities; however, platinum is associated with side effects which have made it necessary to search for, and design, novel complexes based on other metals. Copper is a biometal which is found in living systems; it is now used in the design of metal complexes with biological activities that have demonstrated antitumoral, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, amongst others. In this review, we consider the open horizons of Cu(II)- and Pt(II)-based complexes, new trends in their design, their synthesis, their biological activities and their targets of action.

Metal Complexes of Redox Non-Innocent Ligand N,N'-Bis(3,5-di-tertbutyl-2-hydroxy-phenyl)-1,2-phenylenediamine

Redox non-innocent ligands react with metal precursors to form complexes where the oxidation states of the ligand and thus the metal atom cannot be easily defined. A well-known example of such ligands is bis(o-aminophenol) N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tertbutyl-2-hydroxy-phenyl)-1,2-phenylenediamine, previously developed by the Wieghardt group, which has a potentially tetradentate coordination mode and four distinct protonation states, whereas its electrochemical behavior allows for five distinct oxidation states. This rich redox chemistry, as well as the ability to coordinate to various transition metals, has been utilized in the syntheses of metal complexes with M2L, ML and ML2 stoichiometries, sometimes supported with other ligands. Different oxidation states of the ligand can adopt different coordination modes. For example, in the fully oxidized form, two N donors are sp2-hybridized, which makes the ligand planar, whereas in the fully reduced form, the sp3-hybridized N donors allow the formation of more flexible chelate structures. In general, the metal can be reduced during complexation, but redox processes of the isolated complexes typically occur on the ligand. Combination of this non-innocent ligand with redox-active transition metals may lead to complexes with interesting magnetic, electrochemical, photonic and catalytic properties.

Manganese(II), copper(II) and silver(I) complexes containing 1,10-phenanthroline/1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione against Candida species

Background: New chemotherapeutics are urgently required to treat Candida infections caused by drug-resistant strains. Methods: The effects of 16 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)/1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione/dicarboxylate complexed with Mn(II), Cu(II) and Ag(I) were evaluated against ten different Candida species. Results: Proliferation of Candida albicans, Candida dubliniensis, Candida famata, Candida glabrata, Candida guilliermondii, Candida kefyr, Candida krusei, Candida lusitaniae, Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis was inhibited by three of six Cu(II) (MICs 1.52-21.55 μM), three of three Ag(I) (MICs 0.11-12.74 μM) and seven of seven Mn(II) (MICs 0.40-38.06 μM) complexes. Among these [Mn2(oda)(phen)4(H2O)2][Mn2(oda)(phen)4(oda)2].4H2O, where oda = octanedioic acid, exhibited effective growth inhibition (MICs 0.4-3.25 μM), favorable activity indexes, low toxicity against Vero cells and good/excellent selectivity indexes (46.88-375). Conclusion: [Mn2(oda)(phen)4(H2O)2][Mn2(oda)(phen)4(oda)2].4H2O represents a promising chemotherapeutic option for emerging, medically relevant and drug-resistant Candida species.

Coumarin-transition metal complexes with biological activity: current trends and perspectives

Coumarin (2H-1-benzopyran-2-one) presents the fundamental structure of an enormous class of biologically active compounds of natural, semi-synthetic, and synthetic origin. Extensive efforts are continually being put into the research and development of coumarin derivatives with medicinal properties by the broad scientific community. Transition metal coordination compounds with potential biological activity are a "hot topic" in the modern search for novel drugs. Complexation with transition metals can enhance the physiological effect of a molecule, modify its safety profile, and even imbue it with novel attributes of interest in the fields of medicine and pharmacy. The present review aims to inform the reader of the latest developments in the search for coumarin transition metal complexes with biological activity, their potential applications, and structure-activity relationships, where such can be elucidated. Each section of the present review addresses a certain kind of biological activity (antiproliferative, antioxidant, antimicrobial, etc.), explores the most recent discoveries in the field, and, at the same time, tries to offer useful perspectives for potential future investigations.

Exploring the antioxidant activity of Fe(III), Mn(III)Mn(II), and Cu(II) compounds in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Galleria mellonella models of study

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are closely related to oxidative stress, aging, and the onset of human diseases. To mitigate ROS-induced damages, extensive research has focused on examining the antioxidative attributes of various synthetic/natural substances. Coordination compounds serving as synthetic antioxidants have emerged as a promising approach to attenuate ROS toxicity. Herein, we investigated the antioxidant potential of a series of Fe(III) (1), Mn(III)Mn(II) (2) and Cu(II) (3) coordination compounds synthesized with the ligand N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)[(3-chloro)(2-hydroxy)]-propylamine in Saccharomyces cerevisiae exposed to oxidative stress. We also assessed the antioxidant potential of these complexes in the alternative model of study, Galleria mellonella. DPPH analysis indicated that these complexes presented moderate antioxidant activity. However, treating Saccharomyces cerevisiae with 1, 2 and 3 increased the tolerance against oxidative stress and extended yeast lifespan. The treatment of yeast cells with these complexes decreased lipid peroxidation and catalase activity in stressed cells, whilst no change in SOD activity was observed. Moreover, these complexes induced the Hsp104 expression. In G. mellonella, complex administration extended larval survival under H2O2 stress and did not affect the insect's life cycle. Our results suggest that the antioxidant potential exhibited by these complexes could be further explored to mitigate various oxidative stress-related disorders.

Antibacterial Hydrogel as a Self-Drug-Delivery System Derived from Zn(II)-bis-imidazole/NSAID-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrids

A skin wound is prone to bacterial infection and growth. An antibacterial topical hydrogel that can act as a self-drug-delivery (SDD) system is reported here. Two bidentate ligands (L2/L1) derived from imidazole/benzimidazole derivatives when reacted with Zn(NO3)2 and a series of nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) produced crystalline products, which were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD). Simple mixing of the ingredients of the crystalline products (stoichiometry guided by the corresponding crystal structure) produced an aqueous gel (DMSO/water) when the bidentate ligand was water-insoluble L2, whereas water-soluble L1 readily produced hydrogels under similar conditions. Dynamic rheology and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize the gels. Zone inhibition diameters, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and hemolysis data suggested that among the hydrogelators, L1MEC derived from L1, meclofenac and Zn(NO3)2, was found to be the best against the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. The corresponding hydrogel L1MEC_HG and a piece of a dried cloth bandage coated with the hydrogel also showed appreciable activity against E. coli. The antibacterial property of L1MEC_HG against E. coli, thus demonstrated, is relevant in developing an antibacterial SDD system because E. coli is reported to be present in infected wounds.

Active Cu(II), Mn(II) and Ag(I) 1,10-phenanthroline/1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione/dicarboxylate chelates: effects on Scedosporium

Background: Scedosporium/Lomentospora species are human pathogens that are resistant to almost all antifungals currently available in clinical practice. Methods: The effects of 16 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)/1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione/dicarboxylate chelates containing Cu(II), Mn(II) and Ag(I) against Scedosporium apiospermum, Scedosporium minutisporum, Scedosporium aurantiacum and Lomentospora prolificans were evaluated. Results: To different degrees, all of the test chelates inhibited the viability of planktonic conidial cells, displaying MICs ranging from 0.029 to 72.08 μM. Generally, Mn(II)-containing chelates were the least toxic to lung epithelial cells, particularly [Mn2(oda)(phen)4(H2O)2][Mn2(oda)(phen)4(oda)2].4H2O (MICs: 1.62-3.25 μM: selectivity indexes >64). Moreover, this manganese-based chelate reduced the biofilm biomass formation and diminished the mature biofilm viability. Conclusion: [Mn2(oda)(phen)4(H2O)2][Mn2(oda)(phen)4(oda)2].4H2O opens a new chemotherapeutic avenue for the deactivation of these emergent, multidrug-resistant filamentous fungi.

Formation and Growth of Atomic Scale Seeds of Au Nanoparticle in the Nanospace of an Organic Cage Molecule

Seed-mediated growth has been widely used to synthesize noble metal nanoparticles with controlled size and shape. Although it is becoming possible to directly observe the nucleation process of metal atoms at the single atom level by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it is challenging to control the formation and growth of seeds with only a few metal atoms in homogeneous solution systems. This work reports site-selective formation and growth of atomic scale seeds of the Au nanoparticle in a nanospace of an organic cage molecule. We synthesized a cage molecule with amines and phenols, which were found to both capture and reduce Au(III) ions to spontaneously form the atomic scale seeds containing Au(0) in the nanospace. The growth reaction of the atomic scale seeds afforded Au nanoparticles with an average diameter of 2.0±0.2 nm, which is in good agreement with the inner diameter of the cage molecule.

Compatibility of Nucleobases Containing Pt(II) Complexes with Red Blood Cells for Possible Drug Delivery Applications

The therapeutic advantages of some platinum complexes as major anticancer chemotherapeutic agents and of nucleoside analogue-based compounds as essential antiviral/antitumor drugs are widely recognized. Red blood cells (RBCs) offer a potential new strategy for the targeted release of therapeutic agents due to their biocompatibility, which can protect loaded drugs from inactivation in the blood, thus improving biodistribution. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of loading model nucleobase-containing Pt(II) complexes into human RBCs that were highly stabilized by four N-donors and susceptible to further modification for possible antitumor/antiviral applications. Specifically, platinum-based nucleoside derivatives [PtII(dien)(N7-Guo)]2+, [PtII(dien)(N7-dGuo)]2+, and [PtII(dien)(N7-dGTP)] (dien = diethylenetriamine; Guo = guanosine; dGuo = 2'-deoxy-guanosine; dGTP = 5'-(2'-deoxy)-guanosine-triphosphate) were investigated. These Pt(II) complexes were demonstrated to be stable species suitable for incorporation into RBCs. This result opens avenues for the possible incorporation of other metalated nucleobases analogues, with potential antitumor and/or antiviral activity, into RBCs.

Enantioselective Biomimetic Structures Inspired by Oxi-Dase-Type Metalloenzymes, Utilizing Polynuclear Compounds Containing Copper (II) and Manganese (II) Ions as Building Blocks

This study focuses on developing and evaluating two novel enantioselective biomimetic models for the active centers of oxidases (ascorbate oxidase and catalase). These models aim to serve as alternatives to enzymes, which often have limited action and a delicate nature. For the ascorbate oxidase (AO) model (compound 1), two enantiomers, S,S(+)cpse and R,R(-)cpse, were combined in a crystalline structure, resulting in a racemic compound. The analysis of their magnetic properties and electrochemical behavior revealed electronic transfer between six metal centers. Compound 1 effectively catalyzed the oxidation of ascorbic to dehydroascorbic acid, showing a 45.5% yield for the racemic form. This was notably higher than the enantiopure compounds synthesized previously and tested in the current report, which exhibited yields of 32% and 28% for the S,S(+)cpse and R,R(-)cpse enantiomers, respectively. This outcome highlights the influence of electronic interactions between metal ions in the racemic compound compared to pure enantiomers. On the other hand, for the catalase model (compound 2), both the compound and its enantiomer displayed polymeric properties and dimeric behavior in the solid and solution states, respectively. Compound 2 proved to be effective in catalyzing the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen with a yield of 64.7%. In contrast, its enantiomer (with R,R(-)cpse) achieved only a 27% yield. This further validates the functional nature of the prepared biomimetic models for oxidases. This research underscores the importance of understanding and designing biomimetic models of metalloenzyme active centers for both biological and industrial applications. These models show promising potential as viable alternatives to natural enzymes in various processes.

Molecular Properties of 3d and 4f Coordination Compounds Deciphered by Raman Optical Activity Spectroscopy

Molecular properties of coordination compounds can be efficiently studied by vibrational spectroscopy. The scope of Raman spectroscopy has been greatly enhanced by the introduction of Raman optical activity (ROA) sensitive to chirality. The present review describes some of its recent applications to study the coordination compounds. 3d and 4f metal complexes often absorb the excitation light, or exhibit luminescence. Therefore, effects caused in ROA spectra by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) must be taken into consideration.In 3d metal complexes ECD and circularly-polarized Raman scattering compete with the resonance ROA (RROA) signal. Pure RROA spectrum can thus be obtained by subtracting the so-called ECD-Raman component. CPL is frequently encountered in 4f systems. While it can mask the ROA spectra, it is useful to study molecular structure. These electronic effects can be reduced by using near-infrared excitation although vibrational ROA signal is much weaker compared to the usual green laser excitation scenario. The ROA methodology is thus complex, but capable of providing unique information about the molecules of interests and their interaction with light.

Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic and Biological Properties of Copper(II) Complexes with 1,3,4-Thiadiazole Derivatives

New coordination compounds of copper(II) with 2,5-bis(ethylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (L1) and 2,5-bis(pyridylmethylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (L2) with compositions Cu(L1)2Br2, Cu(L1)(C2N3)2, Cu(L2)Cl2, and Cu(L2)Br2 were prepared. The complexes were identified and studied by CHN analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and static magnetic susceptibility. The crystal structures of Cu(II) complexes with L1 were determined. The structures of the coordination core of complexes Cu(L2)Cl2 and Cu(L2)Br2 were determined by Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Magnetization measurements have revealed various magnetic states in the studied complexes, ranging from an almost ideal paramagnet in Cu(L1)2Br2 to alternating-exchange antiferromagnetic chains in Cu(L1)(C2N3)2, where double dicyanamide bridges provide an unusually strong exchange interaction (J1/kB ≈ -23.5 K; J2/kB ≈ -20.2 K) between Cu(II) ions. The cytotoxic activity of copper(II) complexes with L2 was estimated on the human cell lines of breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2).

Influence of Ligand Environment Stoichiometry on NIR-Luminescence Efficiency of Sm3+, Pr3+ and Nd3+ Ions Coordination Compounds

Six new complexes of the ligand HQcy (-4-(cyclohexanecarbonyl)-5-methyl-2-phenyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one) and Ln3+ ions with emission in the near-infrared (Nd3+) or visible and near-infrared (Sm3+, Pr3+) spectral regions were synthesized and characterized using various methods, including single crystal X-ray diffraction. The study demonstrated that both tris complexes [LnQcy3(H2O)(EtOH)] and tetrakis-acids [H3O][LnQcy4] can be synthesized by varying the synthetic conditions. The photochemical properties of the complexes were investigated experimentally and theoretically using various molecular spectroscopy techniques and Judd-Ofelt theory. The objective was to quantitatively and qualitatively disclose the influence of complex stoichiometry on its luminescence properties. The study showed that the addition of an extra ligand molecule (in the tetrakis species) increased molar extinction by up to 2 times, affected the shape of photoluminescence spectra, especially of the Pr3+ complex, and increased the quantum yield of the Sm3+ complex by up to 2 times. The results obtained from this study provide insights into the luminescent properties of lanthanide coordination compounds, which are crucial for the design and development of novel photonic materials with tailored photophysical properties.

Silver(I) and Copper(II) 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione Complexes as Promising Antivirulence Strategy against Leishmania: Focus on Gp63 (Leishmanolysin)

Leishmaniasis, caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, encompasses a group of neglected diseases with diverse clinical and epidemiological manifestations that can be fatal if not adequately and promptly managed/treated. The current chemotherapy options for this disease are expensive, require invasive administration and often lead to severe side effects. In this regard, our research group has previously reported the potent anti-Leishmania activity of two coordination compounds (complexes) derived from 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (phendione): [Cu(phendione)₃].(ClO₄)₂.4H₂O and [Ag(phendione)₂].ClO₄. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of these complexes on leishmanolysin (gp63), a virulence factor produced by all Leishmania species that plays multiple functions and is recognized as a potential target for antiparasitic drugs. The results showed that both Ag-phendione (-74.82 kcal/mol) and Cu-phendione (-68.16 kcal/mol) were capable of interacting with the amino acids comprising the active site of the gp63 protein, exhibiting more favorable interaction energies compared to phendione alone (-39.75 kcal/mol) or 1,10-phenanthroline (-45.83 kcal/mol; a classical gp63 inhibitor) as judged by molecular docking assay. The analysis of kinetic parameters using the fluorogenic substrate Z-Phe-Arg-AMC indicated V_max and apparent K_m values of 0.064 µM/s and 14.18 µM, respectively, for the released gp63. The effects of both complexes on gp63 proteolytic activity were consistent with the in silico assay, where Ag-phendione exhibited the highest gp63 inhibition capacity against gp63, with an IC₅₀ value of 2.16 µM and the lowest inhibitory constant value (K_i = 5.13 µM), followed by Cu-phendione (IC₅₀ = 163 µM and K_i = 27.05 µM). Notably, pretreatment of live L. amazonensis promastigotes with the complexes resulted in a significant reduction in the expression of gp63 protein, including the isoforms located on the parasite cell surface. Both complexes markedly decreased the in vitro association indexes between L. amazonensis promastigotes and THP-1 human macrophages; however, this effect was reversed by the addition of soluble gp63 molecules to the interaction medium. Collectively, our findings highlight the potential use of these potent complexes in antivirulence therapy against Leishmania, offering new insights for the development of effective treatments for leishmaniasis.

Structural and Theoretical Study of Copper(II)-5-fluoro Uracil Acetate Coordination Compounds: Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Transformation as Possible Humidity Sensor

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of seven different copper(II) coordination compounds, as well as the formation of a protonated ligand involving all compounds from the same reaction. Their synthesis required hydrothermal conditions, causing the partial in situ transformation of 5-fluoro uracil-1-acetic acid (5-FUA) into an oxalate ion (ox), as well as the protonation of the 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy) ligand through a catalytic process resulting from the presence of Cu(II) within the reaction. These initial conditions allowed obtaining the new coordination compounds [Cu₂(5-FUA)₂(ox)(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP2), [Cu(5-FUA)₂(H₂O)(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP3), as well as the ionic pair [(H₂bipy)⁺² 2NO₃^-] (1). The mother liquor evolved rapidly at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, due to the change in concentration of the initial reagents and the presence of the new chemical species generated in the reaction process, yielding CPs [Cu(5-FUA)₂(bipy)]_n·3.5n H₂O, [Cu₃(ox)₃(bipy)₄]_n and [Cu(ox)(bipy)]_n. The molecular compound [Cu(5-FUA)₂(H₂O)₄]·4H₂O (more thermodynamically stable) ended up in the mother liquor after filtration at longer reaction times at 25 °C and 1 atm., cohabiting in the medium with the other crystalline solids in different proportions. In addition, the evaporation of H₂O caused the single-crystal to single-crystal transformation (SCSC) of [Cu(5-FUA)₂(H₂O)(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP3) into [Cu(5-FUA)₂(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP4). A theoretical study was performed to analyze the thermodynamic stability of the phases. The observed SCSC transformation also involved a perceptible color change, highlighting this compound as a possible water sensor.

Incorporation of N7-Platinated Guanines into Thermus Aquaticus (Taq) DNA Polymerase: Atomistic Insights from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

In this work, we elucidated some key aspects of the mechanism of action of the cisplatin anticancer drug, cis-[Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂], involving direct interactions with free nucleotides. A comprehensive in silico molecular modeling analysis was conducted to compare the interactions of Thermus aquaticus (Taq) DNA polymerase with three distinct N7-platinated deoxyguanosine triphosphates: [Pt(dien)(N7-dGTP)] (1), cis-[Pt(NH₃)₂Cl(N7-dGTP)] (2), and cis-[Pt(NH₃)₂(H₂O)(N7-dGTP)] (3) {dien = diethylenetriamine; dGTP = 5'-(2'-deoxy)-guanosine-triphosphate}, using canonical dGTP as a reference, in the presence of DNA. The goal was to elucidate the binding site interactions between Taq DNA polymerase and the tested nucleotide derivatives, providing valuable atomistic insights. Unbiased molecular dynamics simulations (200 ns for each complex) with explicit water molecules were performed on the four ternary complexes, yielding significant findings that contribute to a better understanding of experimental results. The molecular modeling highlighted the crucial role of a specific α-helix (O-helix) within the fingers subdomain, which facilitates the proper geometry for functional contacts between the incoming nucleotide and the DNA template needed for incorporation into the polymerase. The analysis revealed that complex 1 exhibits a much lower affinity for Taq DNA polymerase than complexes 2-3. The affinities of cisplatin metabolites 2-3 for Taq DNA polymerase were found to be quite similar to those of natural dGTP, resulting in a lower incorporation rate for complex 1 compared to complexes 2-3. These findings could have significant implications for the cisplatin mechanism of action, as the high intracellular availability of free nucleobases might promote the competitive incorporation of platinated nucleotides over direct cisplatin attachment to DNA. The study's insights into the incorporation of platinated nucleotides into the Taq DNA polymerase active site suggest that the role of platinated nucleotides in the cisplatin mechanism of action may have been previously underestimated.

Cobalt Deposition from Ionothermally Dissolved Cobalt Oxides

Owing to the environmental problems of numerous metal production processes, there is a growing need for more energy-efficient approaches. Cobalt is considered a strategic element that is extracted not only from ores but also from spent Li-ion batteries. One promising new approach is ionometallurgy, which is the extraction of metal oxides by ionic liquids (ILs). This study concerns new investigations into ionometallurgical processing of CoO, Co₃ O₄ , and LiCoO₂ in the IL betainium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [Hbet][NTf₂ ]. Three crystal structures of cobalt-betaine complex compounds and combined spectroscopic and diffraction studies provide insights into the dissolution process. In addition, an optimized dissolution procedure for metal oxides is presented, avoiding the previously reported decomposition of the IL. Subsequent cobalt electrodeposition is only possible from cationic complex species, highlighting the importance of a thorough understanding of the complex equilibria. The presented method is also compared to other recently reported approaches.

Dynamics of the Ligand Excited States Relaxation in Novel β-Diketonates of Non-Luminescent Trivalent Metal Ions

Complexes emitting in the blue spectral region are attractive materials for developing white-colored light sources. Here, we report the luminescence properties of novel coordination compounds based on the trivalent group 3, 13 metals, and the 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-cyclohexylcarbonyl-pyrazol-5-onate (Q^CH) ligand. [M(Q^CH)₃] (M = Al, Ga, and In), [M(Q^CH)₃(H₂O)] (M = Sc, Gd, and Lu), [Lu(Q^CH)₃(DMSO)], and [La(Q^CH)₃(H₂O)(EtOH)] complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. It has been found that the luminescence quantum yields of the ligand increase by one order of magnitude upon metal coordination. A significant correspondence between the energies of the ligand's excited states and the luminescence quantum yields to the metal ion's atomic numbers was found using molecular spectroscopy techniques. The replacement of the central ion with the heavier one leads to a monotonic increase in singlet state energy, while the energy of the triplet state is similar for all the complexes. Time-resolved measurements allowed us to estimate the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate constants. It was shown that replacing the Al³⁺ ion with the heavier diamagnetic Ga³⁺ and In³⁺ ions decreased the ISC rate, while the replacement with the paramagnetic Gd³⁺ ion increased the ISC rate, which resulted in a remarkably bright and room-temperature phosphorescence of [Gd(Q^CH)₃(H₂O)].

Antioxidant Activity of Coumarins and Their Metal Complexes

Ubiquitously present in plant life, coumarins, as a class of phenolic compounds, have multiple applications-in everyday life, in organic synthesis, in medicine and many others. Coumarins are well known for their broad spectrum of physiological effects. The specific structure of the coumarin scaffold involves a conjugated system with excellent charge and electron transport properties. The antioxidant activity of natural coumarins has been a subject of intense study for at least two decades. Significant research into the antioxidant behavior of natural/semi-synthetic coumarins and their complexes has been carried out and published in scientific literature. The authors of this review have noted that, during the past five years, research efforts seem to have been focused on the synthesis and examination of synthetic coumarin derivatives with the aim to produce potential drugs with enhanced, modified or entirely novel effects. As many pathologies are associated with oxidative stress, coumarin-based compounds could be excellent candidates for novel medicinal molecules. The present review aims to inform the reader on some prominent results from investigations into the antioxidant properties of novel coumarin compounds over the past five years.

Sn and Ge Complexes with Redox-Active Ligands as Efficient Interfacial Membrane-like Buffer Layers for p-i-n Perovskite Solar Cells

Inverted perovskite solar cells with a p-i-n configuration have attracted considerable attention from the research community because of their simple design, insignificant hysteresis, improved operational stability, and low-temperature fabrication technology. However, this type of device is still lagging behind the classical n-i-p perovskite solar cells in terms of its power conversion efficiency. The performance of p-i-n perovskite solar cells can be increased using appropriate charge transport and buffer interlayers inserted between the main electron transport layer and top metal electrode. In this study, we addressed this challenge by designing a series of tin and germanium coordination complexes with redox-active ligands as promising interlayers for perovskite solar cells. The obtained compounds were characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and/or NMR spectroscopy, and their optical and electrochemical properties were thoroughly studied. The efficiency of perovskite solar cells was improved from a reference value of 16.4% to 18.0-18.6%, using optimized interlayers of the tin complexes with salicylimine (1) or 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (2) ligands, and the germanium complex with the 2,3-dihydroxyphenazine ligand (4). The IR s-SNOM mapping revealed that the best-performing interlayers form uniform and pinhole-free coatings atop the PC₆₁BM electron-transport layer, which improves the charge extraction to the top metal electrode. The obtained results feature the potential of using tin and germanium complexes as prospective materials for improving the performance of perovskite solar cells.

Metal Complexes with Naphthalene-Based Acetic Acids as Ligands: Structure and Biological Activity

Naproxen (6-methoxy-α-methyl-2-naphthaleneacetic acid), 1-naphthylacetic acid, 2-naphthylacetic acid and 1-pyreneacetic acid are derivatives of acetic acid bearing a naphthalene-based ring. In the present review, the coordination compounds of naproxen, 1- or 2-naphthylacetato and 1-pyreneacetato ligands are discussed in regard to their structural features (nature and nuclearity of metal ions and coordination mode of ligands), their spectroscopic and physicochemical properties and their biological activities.

Syntheses and crystal structures of bis-(4-methyl-pyridine-κN)bis-(seleno-cyanato-κN)zinc(II) and catena-poly[[bis-(4-methyl-pyridine-κN)cadmium(II)]-di-μ-seleno-cyanato-κ2 N:Se;κ2 Se:N]

The reactions of Zn(NO₃)₂ ^.6H₂O and Cd(NO₃)₂ ^.4H₂O with KSeCN and 4-meth-yl-pyridine (C₆H₇N; 4-picoline) lead to the formation of crystals of bis-(4-methyl-pyridine-κN)bis-(seleno-cyanato-κN)zinc(II), [Cd(NCSe)₂(C₆H₇N)₂] (1), and catena-poly[[bis-(4-methyl-pyridine-κN)cadmium(II)]-di-μ-seleno-cyanato-κ² N:Se;κ² Se:N], [Cd(NCSe)₂(C₆H₇N)₂] _n (2), suitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The asymmetric unit of compound 1 consists of one Zn cation that is located on a twofold rotation axis as well as one seleno-cyanate anion and one 4-methyl-pyridine ligand in general positions. The Zn cations are tetra-hedrally coordinated by two terminal N-bonding thio-cyanate anions and two 4-methyl-pyridine ligands, forming discrete complexes. The asymmetric unit of compound 2 consists of two crystallographically independent Cd cations, of which one is located on a twofold rotation axis and the second on a center of inversion, as well as two crystallographically independent seleno-cyanate anions and two crystallographically independent 4-methyl-pyridine ligands in general positions. The Cd cations are octa-hedrally coordinated by two N- and two S-bonding seleno-cyanate anions and two 4-methyl-pyridine ligands and are linked into chains by pairs of seleno-cyanate anions. Within the chains, the Cd cations show an alternating cis-cis-trans and all-trans coordination and therefore, the chains are corrugated. PXRD investigations prove that the Zn compound was obtained as a pure phase and that the Cd compound contains a very small amount of an additional and unknown phase. In the IR spectrum of 1, the CN stretching vibration of the seleno-cyanate anion is observed at 2072 cm^-1, whereas in the 2 it is shifted to 2094 cm^-1, in agreement with the crystal structures.

OLED Structure Optimization for Pure and Efficient NIR Electroluminescence of Nd3+ Complexes Bearing Fluorinated 1,3-Diketones

NIR emitting OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) with high photoluminescence quantum yields were developed on the basis of fluorinated 1,3-diketonate coordination compounds of the Nd³⁺ ion. Both thermal evaporation and spin-coating techniques were successfully employed for active layer deposition resulting in electroluminescence quantum yields up to 1.38·10^-2%. Blueish-green emission from exciplex and electroplax formations was almost suppressed with the topology optimization of the cell.

The Anti-Leishmania amazonensis and Anti-Leishmania chagasi Action of Copper(II) and Silver(I) 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione Coordination Compounds

Leishmaniasis is a neglected disease caused by protozoa belonging to the Leishmania genus. Notably, the search for new, promising and potent anti-Leishmania compounds remains a major goal due to the inefficacy of the available drugs used nowadays. In the present work, we evaluated the effects of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (phendione) coordinated to silver(I), [Ag(phendione)₂]ClO₄ (Ag-phendione), and copper(II), [Cu(phendione)₃](ClO₄)₂·4H₂O (Cu-phendione), as potential drugs to be used in the chemotherapy against Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania chagasi. The results showed that promastigotes treated with Ag-phendione and Cu-phendione presented a significant reduction in the proliferation rate. The IC₅₀ values calculated to Ag-phendione and Cu-phendione, respectively, were 7.8 nM and 7.5 nM for L. amazonensis and 24.5 nM and 20.0 nM for L. chagasi. Microscopical analyses revealed several relevant morphological changes in promastigotes, such as a rounding of the cell body and a shortening/loss of the single flagellum. Moreover, the treatment promoted alterations in the unique mitochondrion of these parasites, inducing significant reductions on both metabolic activity and membrane potential parameters. All these cellular perturbations induced the triggering of apoptosis-like death in these parasites, as judged by the (i) increased percentage of annexin-positive/propidium iodide negative cells, (ii) augmentation in the proportion of parasites in the sub-G₀/G₁ phase and (iii) DNA fragmentation. Finally, the test compounds showed potent effects against intracellular amastigotes; contrarily, these molecules were well tolerated by THP-1 macrophages, which resulted in excellent selective index values. Overall, the results highlight new selective and effective drugs against Leishmania species, which are important etiological agents of both cutaneous (L. amazonensis) and visceral (L. chagasi) leishmaniasis in a global perspective.

A Novel Class of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes for Solution-Processable OLEDs

Substitution of the chlorido ligand of cyclometalated [Pt (5-R-1,3-di(2-pyridyl) benzene)Cl] (R = methyl, mesityl, 2-thienyl, or 4-diphenylamino-phenyl) by 4-phenylthiazole-2-thiolate leads to related thiolato complexes, which were fully characterized. Their photophysical properties were determined in degassed dichloromethane solution. The emission color of the novel complexes can be easily tuned by the nature of the substituents on the terdentate ligand, as is the case for the parent chlorido complexes. Their luminescence Quantum Yield is high, with that of the compounds with the 2-thienyl or 4-diphenylamino-phenyl substituents being much higher than that of the related chloride complexes. The platinum complex with the cyclometalated 5-(2-thienyl)-1,3-di(2-pyridyl) benzene was used as the emitter for the fabrication of a yellow solution-processable OLED.

Zinc Coordination Compounds with Benzimidazole Derivatives: Synthesis, Structure, Antimicrobial Activity and Potential Anticancer Application

Developing new, smart drugs with the anticancer activity is crucial, especially for cancers, which cause the highest mortality in humans. In this paper we describe a series of coordination compounds with the element of health, zinc, and bioactive ligands, benzimidazole derivatives. By way of synthesis we have obtained four compounds named C1, C2, C4 and C4. Analytical analyses (elemental analysis (EA), flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS)), spectroscopic (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), mass spectrometry (MS)) and thermogravimetric (TG) methods and the definition of crystal structures were used to explore the nature of bonding and to elucidate the chemical structures. The collected analytical data allowed the determination of the stoichiometry in coordination compounds, thermal stability, crystal structure and way of bonding. The cytotoxicity effect of the new compounds as a potential antitumor agent on the glioblastoma (T98G), neuroblastoma (SK-N-AS) and lung adenocarcinoma (A549) cell lines and human normal skin fibroblasts (CCD-1059Sk) was also determined. Cell viability was determined by the MTT assay. The results obtained confirmed that conversion of ligands into the respective metal complexes significantly improved their anticancer properties. The complexes were screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities. The ADME technique was used to determine the physicochemical and biological properties.

In Situ Constructing Coordination Compounds Interphase to Stabilize Zn Metal Anode for High-Performance Aqueous Zn-SeS2 Batteries

Aqueous zinc (Zn) metal batteries have been regarded as the most promising aqueous batteries due to their low redox potential, high theoretical capacity, and abundant Zn resources. Unfortunately, Zn dendrite growth and serious side reactions drastically curtail the cycle life, severely affecting their large-scale application. Herein, a multifunctional ordered Zn-aminotrimethylene phosphonic acid (Zn-ATMP) film is in situ modified on the surface of metal Zn via a facile etching process. The modified layer can not only retard the side reactions and suppress the corrosion rate, but also lower the Zn nucleation overpotential and accelerate diffusion and homogenize deposition of Zn²⁺ due to the strong Zn affinity. Consequently, the as-prepared Zn-ATMP@Zn anode in the symmetric cell enables long-term lifespan (over 1000 h) at 10.0 mA cm^-2 with a high areal capacity of 5 mAh cm^-2 . Furthermore, when assembled with a SeS₂ -based cathode, a long lifespan for over 280 cycles at 2 C can be achieved for the aqueous Zn-SeS₂ battery. This work provides a reliable strategy for constructing stabilized Zn anode and accelerating the development of an aqueous energy storage system.

Copper(II) Phenanthroline-Based Complexes as Potential AntiCancer Drugs: A Walkthrough on the Mechanisms of Action

Copper is an endogenous metal ion that has been studied to prepare a new antitumoral agent with less side-effects. Copper is involved as a cofactor in several enzymes, in ROS production, in the promotion of tumor progression, metastasis, and angiogenesis, and has been found at high levels in serum and tissues of several types of human cancers. Under these circumstances, two strategies are commonly followed in the development of novel anticancer Copper-based drugs: the sequestration of free Copper ions and the synthesis of Copper complexes that trigger cell death. The latter strategy has been followed in the last 40 years and many reviews have covered the anticancer properties of a broad spectrum of Copper complexes, showing that the activity of these compounds is often multi factored. In this work, we would like to focus on the anticancer properties of mixed Cu(II) complexes bearing substituted or unsubstituted 1,10-phenanthroline based ligands and different classes of inorganic and organic auxiliary ligands. For each metal complex, information regarding the tested cell lines and the mechanistic studies will be reported and discussed. The exerted action mechanisms were presented according to the auxiliary ligand/s, the metallic centers, and the increasing complexity of the compound structures.

Dependence of the Fe(II)-Gallic Acid Coordination Compound Formation Constant on the pH

One important property of tannins involves their ability to form coordination compounds with metal ions, which is vital for the bioavailability of these ions, as well as for the antibacterial and antioxidative activities of tannins. In this study, the pH dependence of interactions between gallic acid, one of the basic building blocks of tannins, and Fe(II) ions, was investigated using UV/Vis spectroscopy, in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, two models were developed to explain the processes taking place in the solution. The first model treated the reaction as a simple bimolecular process while the second also considered the protolytic equilibrium, which was proven very successful in discerning the pH dependence of formation constants, and whose assumptions were well supported by DFT calculations. We showed that the two-time deprotonated gallic acid species forms the coordination compound with Fe(II) ions in a 1:1 molar ratio. To gain better insight into the process, the coordination compound formation was also studied using various DFT functionals, which further supported the model results. Furthermore, due to the relatively low sample amounts needed, the methodology developed here will be useful to study compounds that are more difficult to isolate.

Advances in Understanding the Electrocatalytic Reconstruction Chemistry of Coordination Compounds

Coordination compounds including mainstream metal-organic frameworks and Prussian blue analogues receive extensive researches when they directly serve as electrocatalysts. Their reconstruction phenomena, that are closely associated with actual contributions and intrinsic catalytic mechanisms, are expected to be well summarized. Here, the recent advances in understanding reconstruction chemistry of coordination compounds are reviewed, including their main classifications and structural properties, reconstruction phenomena in electrocatalysis (e.g., oxygen/hydrogen evolution reaction, CO₂ reduction), influence factors of reconstruction parameters (e.g., reconstruction rate and reconstruction degree), and reconstruction-performance correlation. It is outlined that the reconstruction processes are influenced by electronic structure of coordination compounds, pH and temperature of testing solution, and applied potentials. The characterization techniques reflecting the evolution information before and after catalysis are also introduced for reconstruction-related mechanistic study. Finally, some challenges and outlooks on reconstruction investigations of coordination compounds are proposed, and the necessity of studying and understanding of these themes under actual working conditions of devices is highlighted.

Synthesis and preliminary biological evaluation of antibacterial and antifungal 5-arylidene tetramic acid-cadmium(II) complexes

The synthesis and biological evaluation of 5-arylidene-N-acetyl-tetramic acids cadmium(II) complexes are reported. Eleven novel compounds were prepared, characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and screened for their antimicrobial activity against five bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA]) and two fungi (Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans). The complexes showed similar or enhanced activities against MRSA in comparison to the corresponding ligands and, additionally, promising antifungal activities against C. neoformans. The most active compounds 3c and 3h showed remarkable activities against MRSA (minimum inhibitory activity [MIC] values of 32 and 4 μg/ml, respectively) and C. neoformans (MIC values of 8 and 16 μg/ml, respectively), accompanied by no human cell toxicity and hemolytic activity within the tested concentration range. The results demonstrate that appropriately functionalized tetramic acids attached with lipophilic alkanoyl chain and after complexation with cadmium(II) ions may act as valuable lead compounds for further investigations toward the development of novel antibacterial and/or antifungal agents.

Hydrogen-Bond-Driven Synergistically Enhanced Hyperpolarizability: Chiral Coordination Polymers with Nonpolar Structures Exhibiting Unusually Strong Second-Harmonic Generation

Four chiral coordination polymers (CPs), M[(S,S)-C₁₄ H₁₄ N₂ O₆ ] and M[(R,R)-C₁₄ H₁₄ N₂ O₆ ] (M=Zn or Cd), have been exclusively synthesized in high yields with the aid of newly designed chiral ligand under hydrothermal condition. The CPs crystallizing in the orthorhombic nonpolar space group, C222₁ , reveal three-dimensional framework structures composed of MO₄ tetrahedra and the corresponding homochiral linkers. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements indicate that the nonpolar CPs reveal very strong SHG efficiency of ca. 5-9 times that of KH₂ PO₄ and exhibit type-I phase-matching behavior. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the unusually large SHG efficiency found from the nonpolar CPs should be attributable to the synergistic effect of polarizable metal cations and enhanced hyperpolarizability in the donor-acceptor system originating from the hydrogen bonding in the coordinated linkers.

Coordination Compounds As Multi-Delivery Systems for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis therapies leveraging bisphosphonates and mineral components (e.g., magnesium, calcium, and strontium) have been raising attention because of their potential for managing this ever-growing disease. The administration of multicomponent therapeutics (combined therapy) in elderly patients is complex and suffers from low patient adherence. Herein, we report an all-in-one combination of four antiosteoporotic components into a new family of coordination complexes: [M₂(H₄alen)₄(H₂O)₂]·1.5H₂O [where M²⁺ = Mg²⁺ (1), (Mg_0.535Ca_0.465)²⁺ (2) and (Mg_0.505Ca_0.450Sr_0.045)²⁺ (3)]. These solid-state complexes were prepared, for the first time, through microwave-assisted synthesis. It is demonstrated that the compounds are capable of releasing their antiosteoporotic components, both in conditions that mimic the path along the gastrointestinal tract and in long periods under physiological conditions (pH ∼7.4). More importantly, when administered in low concentrations, the compounds did not elicit a cytotoxic effect toward liver, kidney, and osteoblast-like cell lines. Besides, it is important to highlight the unique coordination complex with four bone therapeutic components, [(Mg_0.505Ca_0.450Sr_0.045)₂(H₄alen)₄(H₂O)₂]·1.5H₂O (3), which significantly promoted osteoblast metabolic activity up to ca. 1.4-fold versus the control group. These findings bring this type of compounds one-step closer to be considered as an all-in-one and more effective treatment for managing chronic bone diseases, prompting further research on their therapeutic properties.

Advances and Novel Perspectives on Colloids, Hydrogels, and Aerogels Based on Coordination Bonds with Biological Interest Ligands

This perspective article shows new advances in the synthesis of colloids, gels, and aerogels generated by combining metal ions and ligands of biological interest, such as nucleobases, nucleotides, peptides, or amino acids, among other derivatives. The characteristic dynamism of coordination bonds between metal center and biocompatible-type ligands, together with molecular recognition capability of these ligands, are crucial to form colloids and gels. These supramolecular structures are generated by forming weak van der Waals bonds such as hydrogen bonds or π–π stacking between the aromatic rings. Most gels are made up of nano-sized fibrillar networks, although their morphologies can be tuned depending on the synthetic conditions. These new materials respond to different stimuli such as pH, stirring, pressure, temperature, the presence of solvents, among others. For these reasons, they can trap and release molecules or metal ions in a controlled way allowing their application in drug delivery as antimicrobial and self-healable materials or sensors. In addition, the correct selection of the metal ion enables to build catalytic or luminescent metal–organic gels. Even recently, the use of these colloids as 3D-dimensional printable inks has been published. The elimination of the solvent trapped in the gels allows the transformation of these into metal–organic aerogels (MOAs) and metal–organic xerogels (MOXs), increasing the number of possible applications by generating new porous materials and composites useful in adsorption, conversion, and energy storage. The examples shown in this work allow us to visualize the current interest in this new type of material and their perspectives in the short-medium term. Furthermore, these investigations show that there is still a lot of work to be done, opening the door to new and interesting applications.

Recent Advances in Crystalline Oxidopolyborate Complexes of d-Block or p-Block Metals: Structural Aspects, Syntheses, and Physical Properties

Crystalline materials containing hybrid inorganic–organic metal borates (complexes with oxidoborate ligands) display a variety of novel framework building blocks. The structural aspects of these hybrid metallaoxidoborates containing Cd^(II), Co^(II), Cu^(II), Ga^(III), In^(III), Mn^(II), Ni^(II) or Zn^(II) metal centers are discussed in this review. The review describes synthetic approaches to these hybrid materials, their physical properties, their spectroscopic properties and their potential applications.

Coordination Properties of Hydroxyisophthalic Acids: Topological Correlations, Synthesis, Structural Analysis, and Properties of New Complexes

Hydroxyisophthalic acids are valuable polytopic ligands for the design of functional materials based on coordination polymers due to the variety of charges and coordination modes they possess. Herein, we describe the synthesis, thermal stability, nonlinear optical (NLO) and spectroscopic properties of five novel coordination compounds, [K₂ L(H₂ O)₂ ], [MgL(H₂ O)₂ ] ⋅ 3H₂ O, [CaL(H₂ O)₃ ], [SrL(H₂ O)₃ ] ⋅ H₂ O, [BaL(H₂ O)(H₂ O)₅ ], and one salt, (NH₄ )₂ L ⋅ 2H₂ O, with 4,5,6-trihydroxyisophthalic acid (H₂ L), which has not been tested in assembling crystalline coordination networks before. The peculiarities of the structural organization of the compounds were analyzed and compared with those for other hydroxyisophthalates. The coordination properties of hydroxyisophthalic acids were studied from the topological point of view, and a comparative topological analysis of coordination and H-bonded networks was performed. Structural correlations revealed in this study could be useful for the design of hydroxyisophthalate-based coordination networks, including porous metal-organic frameworks, proton conductors, and NLO materials.

Synthesis and Evaluation of the Cytotoxic Activity of Water-Soluble Cationic Organometallic Complexes of the Type [Pt(η1-C2H4OMe)(L)(Phen)]+ (L = NH3, DMSO; Phen = 1,10-Phenanthroline)

Starting from the [PtCl(η1-C2H4OMe)(phen)] (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, 1) platinum(II) precursor, we synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR new [Pt(η1-C2H4OMe)(L)(phen)]+ (L = NH3, 2; DMSO, 3) complexes. These organometallic species, potentially able to interact with cell membrane organic cation transporters (OCT), violating some of the classical rules for antitumor activity of cisplatin analogues, were evaluated for their cytotoxicity. Interestingly, despite both complexes 2 and 3 resulting in greater cell uptake than cisplatin in selected tumor cell lines, only 3 showed comparable or higher antitumor activity. General low cytotoxicity of complex 2 in the tested cell lines (SH-SY5Y, SK-OV-3, Hep-G2, Caco-2, HeLa, MCF-7, MG-63, ZL-65) appeared to depend on its stability towards solvolysis in neutral water, as assessed by NMR monitoring. Differently, the [Pt(η1-C2H4OMe)(DMSO)(phen)]+ (3) complex was easily hydrolyzed in neutral water, resulting in a comparable or higher cytotoxicity in cancer cells with respect to cisplatin. Further, both IC50 values and the uptake profiles of the active complex appeared quite different in the used cell lines, suggesting the occurrence of diversified biological effects. Nevertheless, further studies on the metabolism of complex 3 should be performed before planning its possible use in tissue- and tumor-specific drug design.

Insights into the Capacity and Rate Performance of Transition-Metal Coordination Compounds for Reversible Lithium Storage

Coordination compounds are well-known compounds that are being used as new materials for lithium storage because of their unique advantages, that is, designable structures, abundant active sites, and facile as well as mild synthetic routes. However, the electrode stability, low rate performance, and cycle life of coordination compounds are currently the main issues preventing their application as electrode materials, and the lithium-storage mechanism in coordination networks is not well understood. Herein, isostructural one-dimensional coordination compounds were synthesized to study their lithium-storage performance. Co-HIPA and Ni-HIPA showed superior electrolyte stability than other M-HIPAs, and Co-HIPA displayed a superior reversible capacity and cycle stability, excellent rate performance, and clear voltage platform. DFT calculations and kinetic analysis revealed the influence of the metal center with different electronic structures on the lithium-storage mechanism.

Speciation of Copper(II)-Betaine Complexes as Starting Point for Electrochemical Copper Deposition from Ionic Liquids

The application of ionic liquids for the dissolution of metal oxides is a promising field for the development of more energy- and resource-efficient metallurgical processes. Using such solutions for the production of valuable chemicals or electrochemical metal deposition requires a detailed understanding of the chemical system and the factors influencing it. In the present work, several compounds are reported that crystallize after the dissolution of copper(II) oxide in the ionic liquid [Hbet][NTf2 ]. Dependent on the initial amount of chloride, the reaction temperature and the purity of the reagent, copper crystallizes in complexes with varying coordination geometries and ligands. Subsequently, the influence of these different complex species on electrochemical properties is shown. For the first time, copper is deposited from the ionic liquid [Hbet][NTf2 ], giving promising opportunities for more resource-efficient copper plating. The copper coatings were analyzed by SEM and EDX measurements. Furthermore, a mechanism for the decomposition of [Hbet][NTf2 ] in the presence of chloride is suggested and supported by experimental evidence.

Transition-Metal-Mediated Functionalization of White Phosphorus

Recently there has been great interest in the reactivity of transition-metal (TM) centers towards white phosphorus (P4 ). This has ultimately been motivated by a desire to find TM-mediated alternatives to the current industrial routes used to transform P4 into myriad useful P-containing products, which are typically indirect, wasteful, and highly hazardous. Such a TM-mediated process can be divided into two steps: activation of P4 to generate a polyphosphorus complex TM-Pn , and subsequent functionalization of this complex to release the desired phosphorus-containing product. The former step has by now become well established, allowing the isolation of many different TM-Pn products. In contrast, productive functionalization of these complexes has proven extremely challenging and has been achieved only in a relative handful of cases. In this review we provide a comprehensive summary of successful TM-Pn functionalization reactions, where TM-Pn must be accessible by reaction of a TM precursor with P4 . We hope that this will provide a useful resource for continuing efforts that are working towards this highly challenging goal of modern synthetic chemistry.

Synthesis of Silsesquioxanes with Substituted Triazole Ring Functionalities and Their Coordination Ability

A synthesis of a series of mono-T8 and difunctionalized double-decker silsesquioxanes bearing substituted triazole ring(s) has been reported within this work. The catalytic protocol for their formation is based on the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) process. Diverse alkynes were in the scope of our interest-i.e., aryl, hetaryl, alkyl, silyl, or germyl-and the latter was shown to be the first example of terminal germane alkyne which is reactive in the applied process' conditions. From the pallet of 15 compounds, three of them with pyridine-triazole and thiophenyl-triazole moiety attached to T8 or DDSQ core were verified in terms of their coordinating properties towards selected transition metals, i.e., Pd(II), Pt(II), and Rh(I). The studies resulted in the formation of four SQs based coordination compounds that were obtained in high yields up to 93% and their thorough spectroscopic characterization is presented. To our knowledge, this is the first example of the DDSQ-based molecular complex possessing bidentate pyridine-triazole ligand binding two Pd(II) ions.

Application of Chemometrics Tools to the Study of the Fe(III)-Tannic Acid Interaction

Chemometric techniques were applied to the study of the interaction of iron(III) and tannic acid (TA). Modeling the interaction of Fe(III)–TA is a challenge, as can be the modeling of the metal complexation upon natural macromolecules without a well-defined molecular structure. The chemical formula for commercial TA is often given as C₇₆H₅₂O₄₆, but in fact, it is a mixture of polygalloyl glucoses or polygalloyl quinic acid esters with the number of galloyl moieties per molecule ranging from 2 up to 12. Therefore, the data treatment cannot be based on just the stoichiometric approach. In this work, the redox behavior and the coordination capability of the TA toward Fe(III) were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry and fluorescence spectroscopy. Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) and Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) were used for the data treatment, respectively. The pH range in which there is the redox stability of the system Fe(III)–TA was evaluated. The binding capability of TA toward Fe(III), the spectral features of coordination compounds, and the concentration profiles of the species in solution as a function of pH were defined. Moreover, the stability of the interaction between TA and Fe(III) was interpreted through the chemical models usually employed to depict the interaction of metal cations with humic substances and quantified using the concentration profiles estimated by MCR-ALS.

Application of Coordination Compounds with Transition Metal Ions in the Chemical Industry-A Review

This publication presents the new trends and opportunities for further development of coordination compounds used in the chemical industry. The review describes the influence of various physicochemical factors regarding the coordination relationship (for example, steric hindrance, electron density, complex geometry, ligand), which condition technological processes. Coordination compounds are catalysts in technological processes used during organic synthesis, for example: Oxidation reactions, hydroformylation process, hydrogenation reaction, hydrocyanation process. In this article, we pointed out the possibilities of using complex compounds in catalysis, and we noticed what further research should be undertaken for this purpose.

New Copper(I) Complex with a Coumarin as Ligand with Antibacterial Activity against Flavobacterium psychrophilum

A new copper (I) complex, [Cu(NN₁)₂](ClO₄)_, was synthesized, where NN₁ was a imine ligand 6-((quinolin-2-ylmethylene)amino)-2H-chromen-2-one obtained by a derivatization of natural compound coumarin. The structural characterization in solution was done by NMR techniques, UV-Vis and cyclic voltammetry. The potential antibacterial effect of [Cu(NN₁)₂](ClO₄)_, was assessed for F. psychrophilum isolated 10094. F. psychrophilum is a Gram-negative bacterium which causes diseases such as bacterial cold-water disease and rainbow trout fry syndrome, causing large economic losses in the freshwater salmonid aquaculture industry. This complex show to have antibacterial activity against F. psychrophilum 10094 at non-cytotoxic concentration in cell line derived from trout (F. psychrophilum 10094 IC₅₀ 16.0 ± 0.9; RT-GUT IC₅₀ 53.0 ± 3.1 µg/mL).

Structural and Photophysical Properties of 2,1,3-Benzothiadiazole-Based Phosph(III)azane and Its Complexes

Here we describe the synthesis of a novel N,N'-bis(2,1,3-benzothiadiazol-4-yl)-1-phenylphosphanediamine (H2L) and its zinc (II) and copper (I) coordination compounds [Zn2L2]·nC7H8 (1·nC7H8), [Zn2(H2L)2Cl4]·nC7H8 (2·nC7H8), and [Cu(H2L)Cl]n·nTHF (3·THF). According to single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, H2L ligand and its deprotonated species exhibit different coordination modes. An interesting isomerism is observed for the complexes [Zn2(H2L)2Cl4] (2a and 2b) that differ by the arrangement of H2L. Both complexes possess internal cavities capable of incorporating toluene molecules. Upon toluene release, the geometry of 2b changes substantially, while that of 2a changes slightly. Due to the diverse structures, the compounds 1-3 reveal different photophysical properties. These results are discussed based on previously reported studies and DFT (density functional theory) calculations.

Exploring the Halogen-Bonded Cocrystallization Potential of a Metal-Organic Unit Derived from Copper(ii) Chloride and 4-Aminoacetophenone

In this work, we describe a novel halogen-bonded metal-organic cocrystal involving a square-planar Cu(ii) complex and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (14tfib) by utilizing an amine ligand whose pendant acetyl group enables halogen bonding. The cocrystal was prepared by both mechanochemical synthesis (liquid-assisted grinding) and the conventional solution-based method. Crystal structure determination by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the dominant supramolecular interactions are the I···O halogen bond between 14tfib and CuCl₂(aap)₂ building blocks, and the N–H···Cl hydrogen bonds between CuCl₂(aap)₂ molecules. The combination of halogen and hydrogen bonding leads to the formation of a 2D network. Overall, this work showcases an example of the possibility for extending the complexity of metal-organic crystal structures by using halogen bonding in a way that does not affect other hydrogen bonding synthons.

Cobaloximes as Building Blocks in Halogen-Bonded Cocrystals

In this work, we explore the halogen-bonded cocrystallization potential of cobaloxime complexes in the synthesis of cocrystals with perhalogenated benzenes. We demonstrate a strategy for synthesizing halogen-bonded metal–organic cocrystals by utilizing cobaloximes whose pendant bromide group and oxime oxygen enable halogen bonding. By combining three well-known halogen bond donor molecules differing in binding geometry and composition with three cobaloxime units, we obtained a total of four previously unreported cocrystals. Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments showed that the majority of obtained cocrystals exhibited the formation of the targeted I···O and I···Br motives. These results illustrate the potential of cobaloximes as halogen bond acceptors and indicate that this type of halogen bond acceptors may offer a novel route to metal–organic halogen-bonded cocrystals.

Simple Trans-Platinum Complex Bearing 3-Aminoflavone Ligand Could Be a Useful Drug: Structure-Activity Relationship of Platinum Complex in Comparison with Cisplatin

Following previous studies devoted to trans–Pt(3-af)₂Cl₂, in this paper, the molecular structure and intermolecular interactions of the title complex are compared with other cisplatin analogues of which the crystal structures are presented in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Molecular Hirshfeld surface analysis and computational methods were used to examine a possible relationship between the structure and anticancer activity of trans–Pt(3-af)₂Cl₂. The purpose of the article was also to investigate the effect of hyperthermia on the anticancer activity of cisplatin, cytostatics used in the treatment of patients with ovarian cancer and a new analogue of cisplatin-trans–Pt(3-af)₂Cl₂. The study was conducted on two cell lines of ovarian cancer sensitive to Caov-3 cytostatics and the OVCAR-3 resistant cisplatin line. The study used the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) cell viability assay, LDH (lactate dehydrogenase), and the quantitative evaluation method for measuring gene expression, i.e., qPCR with TagMan probes. Reduced survivability of OVCAR-3 and Caov-3 cells exposed to cytostatics at elevated temperatures (37 °C, 40 °C, 43 °C) was observed. Hyperthermia may increase the sensitivity of cells to platinum-based antineoplastic drugs and paclitaxel, which may be associated with the reduction of gene expression related to apoptotic processes.

Shedding Light on the Interactions of Hydrocarbon Ester Substituents upon Formation of Dimeric Titanium(IV) Triscatecholates in DMSO Solution

The dissociation of hierarchically formed dimeric triple lithium bridged triscatecholate titanium(IV) helicates with hydrocarbyl esters as side groups is systematically investigated in DMSO. Primary alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl as well as benzyl esters are studied in order to minimize steric effects close to the helicate core. The 1 H NMR dimerization constants for the monomer-dimer equilibrium show some solvent dependent influence of the side chains on the dimer stability. In the dimer, the ability of the hydrocarbyl ester groups to aggregate minimizes their contacts with the solvent molecules. Due to this, most solvophobic alkyl groups show the highest dimerization tendency followed by alkenyls, alkynyls and finally benzyls. Furthermore, trends within the different groups of compounds can be observed. For example, the dimer is destabilized by internal double or triple bonds due to π-π repulsion. A strong indication for solvent supported London dispersion interaction between the ester side groups is found by observation of an even/odd alternation of dimerization constants within the series of n-alkyls, n-Ω-alkenyls or n-Ω-alkynyls. This corresponds to the interaction of the parent hydrocarbons, as documented by an even/odd melting point alternation.
