Protective effect of resveratrol and tannic acid combination on aluminium chloride induced neurotoxicity in rats

OBJECTIVE

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and one of the most common causes of dementia. Despite recent advancements, there exists an unmet need for a suitable therapeutic option. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of the combination of resveratrol (20 mg/kg/day p.o.) and tannic acid (50 mg/kg/day p.o.) to reduce aluminium trichloride-induced Alzheimer's disease in rats.

METHODS

Wistar rats weighing 150-200g were administered with aluminium chloride (100 mg/kg/day p.o.) for 90 days to induce neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's disease. Neurobehavioral changes were assessed using novel object recognition test, elevated plus maze test, and Morris water maze test. Histopathological studies were performed using H&E stain and Congo Red stains to check amyloid deposits. Further oxidative stress was measured in brain tissue.

RESULTS

Aluminium trichloride treated negative control group showed cognitive impairment in the Morris water maze test, novel object recognition test, and elevated plus maze test. Further, the negative control group showed significant oxidative stress, increase amyloid deposits, and severe histological changes. Treatment with the combination of resveratrol and tannic acid showed significant attenuation in cognitive impairment. The oxidative stress markers and amyloid plaque levels were significantly attenuated with the treatment.

CONCLUSION

The present study indicates the beneficial effects of resveratrol-tannic acid combination in AlCl3 induced neurotoxicity in rats.

Mussel-Inspired Self-Adhesive and Tough Hydrogels for Effectively Cooling Solar Cells and Thermoelectric Generators

Adhesive hydrogel-based evaporative cooling, which necessitates no electricity input, holds promise for reducing energy consumption in thermal management. Herein, inspired by the surface attachment of mussel adhesive proteins via abundant dynamic covalent bonds and noncovalent interactions, we propose a facile strategy to fabricate a self-adhesive cooling hydrogel (Li-AA-TA-PAM) using a copolymer of acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) as the primary framework. The monomers formed hydrogen bonds between their carboxyl and amide groups, while tannic acid (TA), rich in catechol groups, enhances the adhesion of the hydrogel through hydrogen bonding. The hydrogel demonstrated strong adhesion to various material surfaces, including plastic, ceramic, glass, and metal. Even under high-speed rotation, it still maintains robust adhesion. The adhesion strength of the Li-AA-TA-PAM hydrogel to aluminum foil reached an impressive value of 296.875 kPa. Interestingly, the excellent contact caused by robust adhesion accelerates heat transfer, resulting in a rapid cooling performance, which mimics the perspiration of mammals. Lithium bromide (LiBr) with hydroactively sorptive sites is introduced to enhance sorption kinetics, thereby extending the effective cooling period. Consequently, the operation temperature of commercial polycrystalline silicon solar cells was reduced by 16 °C under an illumination of 1 kW m-2, and the corresponding efficiency of energy conversion was increased by 1.14%, thereby enhancing the output properties and life span of solar cells. The strategy demonstrates the potential for refrigeration applications using viscous gels.

Shape Memory Polyurethane Composite with Fast Response to Near-Infrared Light Based on Tannic Acid-Iron and Dynamic Phenol-Carbamate Network

Intelligent materials derived from green and renewable bio-based materials have garnered widespread attention recently. Herein, shape memory polyurethane composite (PUTA/Fe) with fast response to near-infrared (NIR) light was successfully prepared by introducing Fe3+ into the tannic acid-based polyurethane (PUTA) matrix through coordination between Fe3+ and tannic acid. The results show that the excellent NIR light response ability is due to the even distribution of Fe3+ filler with good photo-thermal conversion ability. With the increase of Fe3+ content, the NIR light response shape recovery rate of PUTA/Fe composite films is significantly improved, and the shape recovery time is reduced from over 60 s to 40 s. In addition, the mechanical properties of PUTA/Fe composite film are also improved. Importantly, owing to the dynamic phenol-carbamate network within the polymer matrix, the PUTA/Fe composite film can reshape its permanent shape through topological rearrangement, and show its good NIR light response shape memory performance. Therefore, PUTA/Fe composites with high content of bio-based material (TA content of 15.1-19.4%) demonstrate the shape memory characteristics of fast response to NIR light, so it will have great potential in the application of new intelligent materials including efficient and environmentally friendly smart photothermal responder. Synergistic Protecting-Etching Synthesis of Carbon Nanoboxes@Silicon for High-Capacity Lithium-Ion Battery

Silicon (Si) is considered as the most likely choice for the high-capacity lithium-ion batteries owing to its ultrahigh theoretical capacity (4200 mA h g-1) being over 10 times than that of traditional graphite anode materials (372 mA h g-1). However, its widespread application is limited by problems such as a large volume expansion and low electrical conductivity. Herein, we design a hollow nitrogen-doped carbon-coated silicon (Si@Co-HNC) composite in a water-based system via a synergistic protecting-etching strategy of tannic acid. The prepared Si@Co-HNC composite can effectively mitigate the volume change of silicon and improve the electrical conductivity. Moreover, the abundant voids inside the carbon layer and the porous carbon layer accelerate the transport of electrons and lithium ions, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance. The reversible discharge capacity of 1205 mA h g-1 can be retained after 120 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g-1. In particular, the discharge capacity can be maintained at 1066 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles at a high current density of 1 A g-1. This study provides a new strategy for the design of Si-based anode materials with excellent electrical conductivity and structural stability.

Aqueous Dispersion of Aramid Nanofibers Achieved by Using Tannic Acid for Ultrahigh Strength Films

Polymer nanofibers have established a robust foundation and possess immense potential in various emerging fields such as sensors and biotechnology. In this study, aqueous dispersions of aramid nanofibers (ANFs) were successfully prepared by using tannic acid (TA). Morphological analysis revealed that TA effectively prevented self-aggregation of ANFs, and preserved the nanofiber structure during TA-assisted solvent exchange. Subsequently, the ANF and TA/ANF films were fabricated using casting and vacuum-assisted filtration techniques. Notably, the tensile strength of the casting TA/ANF film reached 393.8 MPa, exhibiting a remarkable improvement of 41.3% compared to that of the pure ANF film. These exceptional mechanical properties can be attributed to the well-dispersed nanostructures, hydrogen-bonding interactions, zigzag structures, and fiber-bridging effects. Furthermore, the TA/ANF film demonstrated superior ultraviolet (UV) shielding capabilities, visible transparency properties, and excellent resistance to chemical reagents. The above-mentioned interesting findings demonstrate its potential as a nanofiber-reinforced material for poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites.

Tannic Acid-Modified Decellularized Tendon Scaffold with Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activities for Tendon Regeneration

Tendon regeneration is greatly influenced by the oxidant and the inflammatory microenvironment. Persistent inflammation during the tendon repair can cause matrix degradation, tendon adhesion, and excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), while excessive ROS affect extracellular matrix remodeling and tendon integration. Herein, we used tannic acid (TA) to modify a decellularized tendon slice (DTS) to fabricate a functional scaffold (DTS-TA) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties for tendon repair. The characterizations and cytocompatibility of the scaffolds were examined in vitro. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the scaffold were evaluated in vitro and further studied in vivo using a subcutaneous implantation model. It was found that the modified DTS combined with TA via hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds, and the hydrophilicity, thermal stability, biodegradability, and mechanical characteristics of the scaffold were significantly improved. Afterward, the results demonstrated that DTS-TA could effectively reduce inflammation by increasing the M2/M1 macrophage ratio and interleukin-4 (IL-4) expression, decreasing the secretion of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), as well as scavenging excessive ROS in vitro and in vivo. In summary, DTS modified with TA provides a potential versatile scaffold for tendon regeneration.

Antimicrobial polyacrylic acid/tannic acid hydrogel wound dressing facilitating full-thickness skin healing

Polyphenolic compound-modified hydrogel wound dressings with excellent wet tissue adhesion, antimicrobial properties, stretchability, and full-thickness skin healing properties are still extremely rare so far. Polyphenolic compounds such as tannic acid or dopamine can improve the antibacterial and bioadhesive properties of hydrogels, and are also polymerization inhibitors for free radical polymerization. In this study, polyacrylic acid (PAA) aqueous solution was first synthesized, and then antibacterial PAA-TA hydrogel was prepared by mixing it with tannic acid (TA) and the crosslinker 1,6-hexanediol bis(2-methyl-1-propionic acid azide) (HBMAP). This method avoids the hindrance of the phenolic hydroxyl groups in TA on acrylic acid polymerization, and we were able to obtain a series of TA hydrogels (in the range of 0-15 wt.%. We applied these PAA-TA hydrogels to wound dressings and found that they had excellent adhesion to biological tissues, and the tensile strength and elongation at break of PAA-TA hydrogels with 15 wt.%TA content were as high as 1.72 MPa and 1446.3% in tensile strength evaluation. In addition, microbiological analysis showed that wound dressings had significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In vitro wound healing experiments confirmed that the wound dressing was biocompatible and could significantly promote the healing of full-thickness skin defects in the guinea pig model. Our work describes an injectable, self-healing, antimicrobial hydrogel that may have promising clinical applications as a wound dressing material.

Improving properties of platelet-rich fibrin scaffold with tannic acid for wound healing

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), which is the rich source of growth factors, has been used as an efficient scaffold in tissue engineering and wound healing. In this study, tannic acid as a green cross-linker with different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 5% and 10%) was used to improve the properties of PRF. The cross-linked gel scaffolds were evaluated by analyses such as scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, swelling and degradation, mechanical strength, cell toxicity, cell adhesion and antibacterial test. The results showed that the scaffold structure changes by increasing cross-linker concentration. The swelling rate decreased from 49% to 5% for the samples without the cross-linker and with tannic acid (10%), respectively. The degradation percentage for the cross-linked samples was 8%, which showed a lower degradation rate than the non-cross-linked samples (63%). The mechanical strength of the scaffold with the cross-linker increased up to three times (Young's modulus for the non-cross linked and the cross-linked samples: 0.01 and 0.6 MPa, respectively). Cytotoxicity was not observed up to 10% cross-linker concentration. The cells proliferated well on the cross-linked scaffolds and also showed a good antibacterial effect. In general, tannic acid can improve the physical and mechanical properties of PRF without negatively affecting its biological properties.

Tannic acid ameliorates the hazards effect of beryllium induced neuro-alterations and oxidative stress in adult male rats

Background

Tannic acid (TA) is one of the most consumed and famous polyphenols with a widespread attention in the medical field according to its unique structural, pharmaceutical, physicochemical, antioxidant and other biological features. A rare study was conducted on the hazard effect of beryllium (Be) on the central nervous system.

Aims

This study aims to show the ability of beryllium to cross the blood brain barrier. Demonstrate the effect of beryllium and tannic acid separately or with each other on brain ions (Na+, K+, Ca++) and on norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, finally on the glutathione and malondialdehyde.

Animals grouping

Seventy-two rats were divided into four groups as control, Be, TA, and Be+TA where Be was injected intraperitoneally as 1 mg/Kg b. wt, TA was orally administrated as 5% in aquas solution.

Results

The administration of beryllium showed its ability to cross the blood brain barrier and accumulated in cortex > cerebellum>hypothalamus also, a significant increase in Na+, Ca++ cooperated with a significant decrease in K+ ions content was observed. Norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin showed a general significant decrease in their content joined with a significant decrease in glutathione (GSH) and elevation in malondialdehydes (MDA) because of Be intoxication. On the other hands the daily oral administration of tannic acid showed a general significant decrease in Na+, Ca++ ions content parallel with a significant increase K+ also, a non-significant change in the three measured neurotransmitters was noticed.

Conclusion

Tannic acid showed a mitigation effect against Be intoxication which may regarded to the tannic acid antioxidant, chelating effect.

One-Step Synthesis of Hydrogel Adhesive with Acid-Responsive Tannin Release for Diabetic Oral Mucosa Defects Healing

The complex preparation, weak wet tissue adhesion, and limited biological activity of traditional oral wound dressings usually impede their efficient treatment and healing for diabetic oral mucosal defects. To overcome these problems, a novel hydrogel adhesive (named CFT hydrogel) is rapidly constructed using a one-step method based on dual-dynamic covalent cross-linking. Compared with the commercial oral patches, the CFT hydrogel shows superior in vivo (rat tongue) wet tissue adhesion performance. Additionally, the CFT hydrogel exhibits unique acid-responsive properties, thereby facilitating the release of bioactive molecule tannic acid in the acidic diabetic wound microenvironment. And a series of in vitro experiments substantiate the favorable biocompatibility and bioactivity properties (including antibacterial, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenetic effects) exhibited by CFT hydrogel. Moreover, in vivo experiments conducted on a diabetic rat model with oral mucosal defects demonstrate that the CFT hydrogel exhibits significant efficacy in protecting against mucosal wounds, alleviating inflammatory reactions, thereby facilitating the wound-healing process. Taken together, this study provides a promising and comprehensive therapeutic option with great potential for the clinical management of oral mucosa defects in diabetic patients.

Protein-Based Rechargeable and Replaceable Antimicrobial and Antifouling Coatings on Hydrophobic Food-Contact Surfaces

The growing concerns regarding foodborne illnesses related to fresh produce accentuate the necessity for innovative material solutions, particularly on surfaces that come into close contact with foods. This study introduces a sustainable, efficient, and removable antimicrobial and antifouling coating ideally suited for hydrophobic food-contact surfaces such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Developed through a crosslinking reaction involving tannic acid, gelatin, and soy protein hydrolysate, these coatings exhibit proper stability in aqueous washing solutions and effectively combat bacterial contamination and prevent biofilm formation. The unique surface architecture promotes the formation of halamine structures, enhancing antimicrobial efficacy with a rapid contact killing effect and reducing microbial contamination by up to 5 log10 cfu·cm-2 against both Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Listeria innocua (Gram-positive). Notably, the coatings are designed for at least five recharging cycles under mild conditions (pH6, 20 ppm free active chlorine) and can be easily removed with hot water or steam to refresh the depositions. This removal process not only conveniently aligns with existing sanitation protocols in the fresh produce industry but also facilitates the complete eradication of potential developed biofilms, outperforming uncoated LDPE coupons. Overall, these coatings represent sustainable, cost-effective, and practical advancements in food safety and are promising candidates for widespread adoption in food processing environments.

Rapid chemical reduction synthesis of copper nanoclusters with blue fluorescence for highly sensitive detection of furazolidone

Tannic acid (TA), as a stabilizing agent, was successfully utilized to establish blue-emitting copper nanoclusters (TA-Cu NCs) on the basis of a facile chemical reduction preparation method. Characterization results proved successful synthesis of TA-Cu NCs with uniform size and excellent stability. TA-Cu NCs exhibited a blue emission wavelength at 431 nm when excited at 364 nm. Interestingly, the as-prepared TA-Cu NCs were selectively quenched by furazolidone based on static quenching. In addition, this analysis platform for furazolidone detection had an excellent linear range from 0.5 to 120 μM with a detection limit of 0.074 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the accuracy of this sensing method was successfully confirmed by detecting furazolidone in bovine serum samples, indicating that TA-Cu NCs had bright application prospects.

A Drop-By-Drop Self-Assembled All-Natural Hydrogel as a Desensitizer for Rapid and Enduring Management of Dentin Hypersensitivity

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a prevalent dental condition arising from the exposure of dentin tubules (DTs), leading to discomfort upon external stimuli. However, achieving swift and profound occlusion of these exposed DTs for immediate and enduring relief remains challenging due to the intricate dentin structure and oral environment. Herein, a pioneering and facile drop-by-drop strategy involving an in situ generated natural supramolecular hydrogel formed by self-assembling silk fibroin (SF) and tannic acid (TA) within the narrow DT space is proposed. When SF and TA aqueous solutions are applied successively to exposed dentin, they penetrate deeply within DTs and coassemble into compact gels, robustly adhering to DT walls. This yields a rapid and compact occlusion effect with an unprecedented depth exceeding 250 µm, maintaining stable occlusion efficacy even under rigorous in vitro and in vivo erosion and friction conditions for no less than 21 days. Furthermore, the biocompatibility and effective occlusion properties are verified through cell studies in simulated oral settings and an in vivo rabbit model. This study, for the first time, demonstrates the translational potential of hydrogel-based desensitizers in treating DH with prompt action, superior occlusion depth and enduring treatment benefits, holding promise as clinical-friendly restorative solutions for delicate-structured biosystems.

Evaluating the effects of tannic acid on rabbit growth performance, digestibility, antioxidant status, intestinal morphology and caecal fermentation and microbiota

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of dietary supplementation with tannic acid (TA) on the growth performance, digestibility, antioxidant status, intestinal morphology and the caecal fermentation and microbiota in rabbits. A total number of 120 Ira rabbits (30 days of age) were randomly allotted to four dietary treatment groups: TA 0 (control), TA 0.75, TA 1.5 and TA 3, administered basal diets with 0, 0.75, 1.5 and 3 g TA/kg of feed for 28 days. Compared to the control group, dietary 3 g TA/kg inclusion decreased the average daily feed intake (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found in the digestibility among the groups (p > 0.05). Serum total antioxidant capacity was significantly higher in the 3 g/kg TA group than in the other groups (p < 0.05). There was a significant increase in the concentration of propionic acid and butyric acid in the 3 g/kg TA group. The addition of TA had no effect on villus height and crypt depth of small intestine (p > 0.05). The 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing results showed that at the phylum level, dietary 3 g/kg TA increased the abundance of Bacteroidetes in the caecum of rabbits (p < 0.05). Based on the results, dietary TA is effective in antioxidant capacity of rabbits, improving caecal fermentation and optimizing the caecal microflora. However, the appropriate dosage supplementation of TA in rabbits needs further research.

Effect of Low-Temperature Oxygen Plasma Treatment of Titanium Alloy Surface on Tannic Acid Coating Deposition

In this study, the effect of low-temperature oxygen plasma treatment with various powers of a titanium alloy surface on the structural and morphological properties of a substrate and the deposition of a tannic acid coating was investigated. The surface characteristics of the titanium alloy were evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. Following this, the tannic acid coatings were deposited on the titanium alloy substrates and the structural and morphological properties of the tannic acid coatings deposited were subject to characterization by XPS, SEM, and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) measurements. The results show that the low-temperature oxygen plasma treatment of titanium alloys leads to the formation of titanium dioxides that contain -OH groups on the surface being accompanied by a reduction in carbon, which imparts hydrophilicity to the titanium substrate, and the effect increases with the applied plasma power. The performed titanium alloy substrate modification translates into the quality of the deposited tannic acid coating standing out by higher uniformity of the coating, lower number of defects indicating delamination or incomplete bonding of the coating with the substrate, lower number of cracks, thinner cracks, and higher thickness of the tannic acid coatings compared to the non-treated titanium alloy substrate. A similar effect is observed as the applied plasma power increases.

Natural Polymer-Polyphenol Bioadhesive Coacervate with Stable Wet Adhesion, Antibacterial Activity, and On-Demand Detachment

Medical adhesives are emerging as an important clinical tool as adjuvants for sutures and staples in wound closure and healing and in the achievement of hemostasis. However, clinical adhesives combining cytocompatibility, as well as strong and stable adhesion in physiological conditions, are still in demand. Herein, a mussel-inspired strategy is explored to produce adhesive coacervates using tannic acid (TA) and methacrylate pullulan (PUL-MA). TA|PUL-MA coacervates mainly comprise van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. The methacrylic groups in the PUL backbone increase the number of interactions in the adhesives matrix, resulting in enhanced cohesion and adhesion strength (72.7 Jm-2 ), compared to the non-methacrylated coacervate. The adhesive properties are kept in physiologic-mimetic solutions (72.8 Jm-2 ) for 72 h. The photopolymerization of TA|PUL-MA enables the on-demand detachment of the adhesive. The poor cytocompatibility associated with the use of phenolic groups is here circumvented by mixing reactive oxygen species-degrading enzyme in the adhesive coacervate. This addition does not hamper the adhesive character of the materials, nor their anti-microbial or hemostatic properties. This affordable and straightforward methodology, together with the tailorable adhesivity even in wet environments, high cytocompatibility, and anti-bacterial activity, enables foresee TA|PUL-MA as a promising ready-to-use bioadhesive for biomedical applications.

Cloning of three epsilon-class glutathione S-transferase genes from Micromelalopha troglodyta (Graeser) (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) and their response to tannic acid

Micromelalopha troglodyta (Graeser) is an important pest of poplar in China, and glutathione S-transferase (GST) is an important detoxifying enzyme in M. troglodyta. In this paper, three full-length GST genes from M. troglodyta were cloned and identified. These GST genes all belonged to the epsilon class (MtGSTe1, MtGSTe2, and MtGSTe3). Furthermore, the expression of these three MtGSTe genes in different tissues, including midguts and fat bodies, and the MtGSTe expression in association with different concentrations of tannic acid, including 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 mg ml-1, were analysed in detail. The results showed that the expression levels of MtGSTe1, MtGSTe2, and MtGSTe3 were all the highest in the fourth instar larvae; the expression levels of MtGSTe1 and MtGSTe3 were the highest in fat bodies, while the expression level of MtGSTe2 was the highest in midguts. Furthermore, the expression of MtGSTe mRNA was induced by tannic acid in M. troglodyta. These studies were helpful to clarify the interaction between plant secondary substances and herbivorous insects at a deep level and provided a theoretical foundation for controlling M. troglodyta.

Tannic acid alleviates ETEC K88-induced intestinal damage through regulating the p62-keap1-Nrf2 and TLR4-NF-κB-NLRP3 pathway in IPEC-J2 cells

BACKGROUND

Tannic acid (TA), a naturally occurring polyphenol, has shown diverse potential in preventing intestinal damage in piglet diarrhea induced by Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88. However, the protective effect of TA on ETEC k88 infection-induced post-weaning diarrhea and its potential mechanism has not been well elucidated. Therefore, an animal trial was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with TA on the intestinal diarrhea of weaned piglets challenged with ETEC K88. In addition, porcine intestinal epithelial cells were used as an in vitro model to explore the mechanism through which TA alleviates intestinal oxidative damage and inflammation.

RESULTS

The results indicated that TA supplementation (2 and 4 g kg-1 ) reduced diarrhea rate, enzyme activity (diamine oxidase [DAO] and Malondialdehyde [MAD]) and serum inflammatory cytokines concentration (TNF-α and IL-1β) (P < 0.05) compared to the Infection group (IG), group in vivo. In vitro, TA treatment effectively alleviated ETEC-induced cytotoxicity, increased the expression of ZO-1, occludin and claudin-1 at both mRNA and protein levels. Moreover, TA pre-treatment increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes (such as T-SOD) and decreased serum cytokine levels (TNF-α and IL-1β). Furthermore, TA increased cellular antioxidant capacity by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway and decreased inflammatory response by down-regulating the expression of TLR4, MyD88, NF-kB and NLRP3.

CONCLUSION

The present study showed that TA reduced the diarrhea rate of weaned piglets by restoring the intestinal mucosal mechanical barrier function, alleviating oxidative stress and inflammation. The underlying mechanism was achieved by modulating the p62-keap1-Nrf2 and TLR4-NF-κB-NLRP3 pathway. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Effect of tannic acid modification on the interface and emulsification properties of zein colloidal particles

BACKGROUND

Interface modification driven by supramolecular self-assembly has been accepted as a valuable strategy for emulsion stabilization enhancement. However, there has been a dearth of comparative research on the effect of simple complexation and assembly from the perspective of the responsible mechanism.

RESULTS

The present study selected zein and tannic acid (TA) as representative protein and polyphenol modules for self-assembly (coined as TA-modified zein particle and TA-zein complex particle) to explore the surface properties and interfacial behavior, as well as the stability of constructed Pickering emulsions to obtain the regulation law of different modification methods on the interfacial behavior of colloidal particles. The results demonstrated that TA-modified zein colloidal particles potentially improved the emulsifying properties. When the TA concentration was 3 mmol L-1 , the optimized TA-modified zein particle was nano-sized (109.83 nm) and had advantageous interfacial properties, including sharply reduced surface hydrophobicity, as well as a low diffusion rate at the oil/water interface. As a result, the shelf life of Pickering emulsion containing 50% oil phase was extended to 90 days.

CONCLUSION

Through multi-angled research on the properties of the interfacial membrane, improvement of emulsion stability was a result of the formation of viscoelastic interfacial film that resulted from the decrease of absorption rate between particles and interface. Using refined regulation to investigate the role of different sample preparation methods from a mechanistic perspective. Overall, the present study has provided a reference for TA to regulate the surface properties and interface behavior of zein colloidal particles, enriched the understanding of colloidal interface assembly, and provided a theoretical basis for the quality control of interface-oriented food systems. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Self-assembled coating with a metal-polyphenolic network for intraocular lens modification to prevent posterior capsule opacification

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a main complication after cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOLs) implantation and is attributed to residual lens epithelial cells (LECs) migrating to the IOL surface and posterior capsules. IOL surface modification has been a newly-developing research filed in recent years; however, the applicability and economical acquisition of modified materials remain unsolved. In this study, we first applied a metal-polyphenolic network coating with a self-assembly technique on the IOL surface by using tannic acid (TA) combined with AlCl3, which are easily acquire and applying on the IOL surface to solve the IOL transmittance affair. Using wound healing and Transwell assay to verify AZD0364 inhibits cell migration (P< 0.05), the lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophage inflammation model to verify pterostilbene (PTE) inhibits the inflammatory reaction (P< 0.01). By optimizes its self-assembly coating parameters and calculating its drug release kinetics, we successfully loaded these two drugs on the coating, named TA (AZD0364/PTE) IOL. Its surface morphology characteristics were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and water contact angle. The optical performance was carefully investigated by optical instruments and equipment (n= 3). Thein vitroresults showed that TA (AZD0364/PTE) IOL can significantly inhibit cell adhesion and acute inflammation (n= 3,P< 0.0001). Importantly, afterin vivoimplantation for 28 d with eight rabbits PCO models in two groups, the TA (AZD0364/PTE) IOL group maintained clear refracting media and decreased the inflammatory reaction compared with the original IOL group (P< 0.05). This study provides a new applicable and economical strategy for preventing PCO and offers a reference for the next generation of IOLs that benefit cataract patients.

Enhancing Dendritic Cell Activation Through Manganese-Coated Nanovaccine Targeting the cGAS-STING Pathway

Background

Nanovaccines have emerged as a promising vaccination strategy, exhibiting their capacity to deliver antigens and adjuvants to elicit specific immune responses. Despite this potential, optimizing the design and delivery of nanovaccines remains a challenge.

Methods

In this study, we engineered a dendritic mesoporous silica-based nanocarrier enveloped in a metal-phenolic network (MPN) layer containing divalent manganese ions and tannic acid (MSN@MT). This nanocarrier was tailored for antigen loading to serve as a nanovaccine, aiming to activate the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway in dendritic cells (DCs). Our experimental approach encompassed both cellular assays and mouse immunizations, allowing a comprehensive evaluation of the nanovaccine's impact on DC activation and its influence on the generation of antigen-specific T-cell responses.

Results

MSN@MT demonstrated a remarkable enhancement in humoral and cellular immune responses in mice compared to control groups. This highlights the potential of MSN@MT to effectively trigger the cGAS-STING pathway in DCs, resulting in robust immune responses.

Conclusion

Our study introduces MSN@MT, a unique nanocarrier incorporating divalent manganese ions and tannic acid, showcasing its exceptional ability to amplify immune responses by activating the cGAS-STING pathway in DCs. This innovation signifies a stride in refining nanovaccine design for potent immune activation.

Natural Underwater Bioadhesive Offering Cohesion Modulation via Hydrogen Bond Disruptor: A Highly Injectable and in Vivo Stable Remedy for Gastric Ulcer Resolution

Injectable bioadhesives are attractive for managing gastric ulcers through minimally invasive procedures. However, the formidable challenge is to develop bioadhesives that exhibit high injectability, rapidly adhere to lesion tissues with fast gelation, provide reliable protection in the harsh gastric environment, and simultaneously ensure stringent standards of biocompatibility. Here, a natural bioadhesive with tunable cohesion is developed based on the facile and controllable gelation between silk fibroin and tannic acid. By incorporating a hydrogen bond disruptor (urea or guanidine hydrochloride), the inherent network within the bioadhesive is disturbed, inducing a transition to a fluidic state for smooth injection (injection force <5 N). Upon injection, the fluidic bioadhesive thoroughly wets tissues, while the rapid diffusion of the disruptor triggers instantaneous in situ gelation. This orchestrated process fosters the formed bioadhesive with durable wet tissue affinity and mechanical properties that harmonize with gastric tissues, thereby bestowing long-lasting protection for ulcer healing, as evidenced through in vitro and in vivo verification. Moreover, it can be conveniently stored (≥3 m) postdehydration. This work presents a promising strategy for designing highly injectable bioadhesives utilizing natural feedstocks, avoiding any safety risks associated with synthetic materials or nonphysiological gelation conditions, and offering the potential for minimally invasive application.

pH-responsive resveratrol-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles modified with tannic acid for promoting colon cancer cell apoptosis

Resveratrol (Res) is known for its potential in treating various types of cancers, with a particular advantage of causing minimal toxic side effects. However, its clinical application is constrained by challenges such as poor bioavailability, low water solubility, and chemical instability in neutral and alkaline environments. In light of these limitations, we have developed a pH-responsive drug delivery nanoplatform, Res@ZIF-8/TA NPs, which exhibits good biocompatibility and shows promise for in vitro cancer therapy. Benefiting from the mild reaction conditions provided by zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a "one-pot method" was used for drug synthesis and loading, resulting in a satisfactory loading capacity. Notably, Res@ZIF-8/TA NPs respond to acidic environments, leading to an improved drug release profile with a controlled release effect. Our cell-based experiments indicated that tannic acid (TA) modification enhances the biocompatibility of ZIFs. 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo (-z-y1)-3,5-di- phenytetrazoliumromide (MTT assay), Hoechst 33342/PI staining, cell scratch assay, Transwell and Reverse Transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) assays further demonstrated that Res@ZIF-8/TA NPs inhibited colon cancer cell migration and invasion, and promoted apoptosis of colon cancer cells, suggesting a therapeutic potential and demonstrating anti-cancer properties. In conclusion, the Res@ZIF-8/TA NPs pH-responsive drug delivery systems we developed may offer a promising avenue for cancer therapy. By addressing some of the challenges associated with Res-based treatments, this system could contribute to advancements in cancer therapeutics.

Hydro-Sensitive, In Situ Ultrafast Physical Self-Gelatinizing, and Red Blood Cells Strengthened Hemostatic Adhesive Powder with Antibiosis and Immunoregulation for Wound Repair

Immediate and effective hemostatic treatments for complex bleeding wounds are an urgent clinical demand. Hemostatic materials with characteristics of adhesion, sealing, anti-infection, and concrescence promotion have drawn growing concerns. However, pure natural multifunctional hemostatic materials with in situ ultrafast self-gelation are rarely reported. In this study, a hydro-sensitive collagen/tannic acid (ColTA) natural hemostatic powder is developed that can in situ self-gel to form adhesive by the non-covalent crosslinking between tannic acid (TA) and collagen (Col) in liquids. The physical interactions endow ColTA adhesive with the characteristics of instantaneous formation and high adhesion at various substrate surfaces. Crucially, ColTA powder adhesive shows an enhanced adhesion performance in the presence of blood due to the electrostatic interactions between ColTA adhesive and red blood cells, conducive to effective in situ sealing and rapid hemostasis. The biocompatible and hemocompatible ColTA adhesive can effectively control bleeding and seal the wounds of the caudal vein, liver, heart, and femoral arteries in rats. Furthermore, the low-cost and ready-to-use ColTA adhesive powder also possesses good antibacterial and inhibiting biofilm formation ability, and can efficiently regulate immune response by the NF-κB pathway to promote wound repair, making it a highly promising hemostatic material with great potential for biomedical applications.

Biomimetic Sol-Gel Chemistry to Tailor Structure, Properties, and Functionality of Bionanocomposites by Biopolymers and Cells

Biosilica, synthesized annually only by diatoms, is almost 1000 times more abundant than industrial silica. Biosilicification occurs at a high rate, although the concentration of silicic acid in natural waters is ~100 μM. It occurs in neutral aqueous solutions, at ambient temperature, and under the control of proteins that determine the formation of hierarchically organized structures. Using diatoms as an example, the fundamental differences between biosilicification and traditional sol-gel technology, which is performed with the addition of acid/alkali, organic solvents and heating, have been identified. The conditions are harsh for the biomaterial, as they cause protein denaturation and cell death. Numerous attempts are being made to bring sol-gel technology closer to biomineralization processes. Biomimetic synthesis must be conducted at physiological pH, room temperature, and without the addition of organic solvents. To date, significant progress has been made in approaching these requirements. The review presents a critical analysis of the approaches proposed to date for the silicification of biomacromolecules and cells, the formation of bionanocomposites with controlled structure, porosity, and functionality determined by the biomaterial. They demonstrated the broad capabilities and prospects of biomimetic methods for creating optical and photonic materials, adsorbents, catalysts and biocatalysts, sensors and biosensors, and biomaterials for biomedicine.

Photocrosslinked Co-Assembled Amino Acid Nanoparticles for Controlled Chemo/Photothermal Combined Anticancer Therapy

Nanostructures formed from the self-assembly of amino acids are promising materials in many fields, especially for biomedical applications. However, their low stability resulting from the weak noncovalent interactions between the amino acid building blocks limits their use. In this work, nanoparticles co-assembled by fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-protected tyrosine (Fmoc-Tyr-OH) and tryptophan (Fmoc-Trp-OH) are crosslinked by ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Two methods are investigated to induce the dimerization of tyrosine, irradiating at 254 nm or at 365 nm in the presence of riboflavin as a photo-initiator. For the crosslinking performed at 254 nm, both Fmoc-Tyr-OH and Fmoc-Trp-OH generate dimers. In contrast, only Fmoc-Tyr-OH participates in the riboflavin-mediated dimerization under irradiation at 365 nm. The participation of both amino acids in forming the dimers leads to more stable crosslinked nanoparticles, allowing also to perform further chemical modifications for cancer applications. The anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox) is adsorbed onto the crosslinked nanoparticles, subsequently coated by a tannic acid-iron complex, endowing the nanoparticles with glutathione-responsiveness and photothermal properties, allowing to control the release of Dox. A remarkable anticancer efficiency is obtained in vitro and in vivo in tumor-bearing mice thanks to the combined chemo- and photothermal treatment.

Prospective Application of Tannic Acid in Acetaminophen (APAP)-Induced Acute Liver Failure

This study investigated the effect of tannic acid (TA), a natural plant-derived polyphenol, on hepatocyte viability and function, focusing on both hepatoprotective and hepatocurative aspects within liver failure models. In an in vitro prevention model, the TA-containing group exhibited 1.5-fold and 59-fold higher relative cell viability and albumin synthesis, respectively, in injured mature hepatocytes (MHs) and 1.14-fold and 1.10-fold higher values in injured small hepatocytes (SHs), compared with the TA-free group. In the in vitro curative model, the TA-containing group exhibited 3.25-fold and 113-fold higher relative cell viability and albumin synthesis, respectively, in injured MHs and 0.36-fold and 3.55-fold higher values in injured SHs, compared with the TA-free group. In the in vivo disease model, the administration of 300 μL of 1 μg/mL TA significantly mitigated acute liver failure damage and post-APAP toxicity in mice. This was evident in serum analysis, where the levels of alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, and total bilirubin notably decreased, in agreement with histological observations. The study findings reveal that TA can enhance hepatic function at specific additive concentrations. Furthermore, even when injured by APAP, hepatocytes could revert to their preinjury state after additional TA supplementation. Additionally, pretreating hepatocytes with TA can alleviate subsequent damage. Thus, TA holds clinical potential in the treatment of APAP-induced liver failure.

Green Physical Modification of Polypropylene Fabrics by Cross-Linking Chitosan with Tannic Acid and Postmodification by Quaternary Ammonium Grafting to Improve Antibacterial Activity

A green cross-linking and straightforward method to physically trap inert fibers in a network of chitosan was implemented. The cross-linking reaction involved a biosourced and biocompatible cross-linker [tannic acid (TA)] and mild conditions in water (pH = 8.5, O2 bubbling, 60 °C, 3 h). The steric hindrance of TA led to a low but effective cross-linking rate leaving parts of primary amines of chitosan available for postmodification such as the grafting of quaternary ammoniums for antibacterial purposes. Fabric's coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray, infrared spectroscopy, and weight gain measurements. This allowed the optimization of process conditions. No significant antioxidant activity was observed on fabrics coated with chitosan cross-linked with TA, confirming the low cross-linking rate. This low cross-linking rate allowed grafting of quaternary ammoniums for antibacterial purposes, but it is possible to consider grafting other active molecules. Biological assays were conducted on this coating to assess its antibacterial properties. Reduction of bacterial colonization on both Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative), two of the major strains responsible for nosocomial infections, confirmed the potential of the coating for antibacterial purposes. This study displays a simple and ecofriendly process to coat inert fabrics with a chitosan network containing reactive functions (primary amines) available for grafting active molecules for various purposes.

Antiviral functionalization of cellulose using tannic acid and tannin-rich extracts

Due to seasonally appearing viruses and several outbreaks and present pandemic, we are surrounded by viruses in our everyday life. In order to reduce viral transmission, functionalized surfaces that inactivate viruses are in large demand. Here the endeavor was to functionalize cellulose-based materials with tannic acid (TA) and tannin-rich extracts by using different binding polymers to prevent viral infectivity of both non-enveloped coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) and enveloped human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43). Direct antiviral efficacy of TA and spruce bark extract in solution was measured: EC50 for CVB3 was 0.12 and 8.41 μg/ml and for HCoV-OC43, 78.16 and 95.49 μg/ml, respectively. TA also led to an excellent 5.8- to 7-log reduction of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus infectivity. TA functionalized materials reduced infectivity already after 5-min treatment at room temperature. All the tested methods to bind TA showed efficacy on paperboard with 0.1 to 1% (w/v) TA concentrations against CVB3 whereas material hydrophobicity decreased activities. Specific signatures for TA and HCoV-OC43 were discovered by Raman spectroscopy and showed clear co-localization on the material. qPCR study suggested efficient binding of CVB3 to the TA functionalized cellulose whereas HCoV-OC43 was flushed out from the surfaces more readily. In conclusion, the produced TA-materials showed efficient and broadly acting antiviral efficacy. Additionally, the co-localization of TA and HCoV-OC43 and strong binding of CVB3 to the functionalized cellulose demonstrates an interaction with the surfaces. The produced antiviral surfaces thus show promise for future use to increase biosafety and biosecurity by reducing pathogen persistence.

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of tannic acid as an antibacterial agent in broilers infected with Salmonella Typhimurium

This study was conducted to evaluate tannic acid (TA) as an antibacterial agent against Salmonella Typhimurium in in vitro and in vivo chicken models. The TA formed an inhibitory zone against Salmonella enterica serotypes including S. Typhimurium, S. Enteritidis, and S. Infantis. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of TA against Salmonella Typhimurium nalidixic acid resistant strain (STNR) were determined as 40 and 700 μg/mL, respectively. Sublethal doses of TA (5, 10, and 20 μg/mL) restricted swimming and swarming motility and biofilm formation of STNR compared to the control group (0 μg/mL) (P < 0.05). The TA-bovine serum albumin (BSA) complex formed at simulated gastric pH (pH 3.75) was hydrolyzed at pH 6.75 and 7.25 (P < 0.05), and the hydrolysis of the TA-BSA complex was stronger at pH 7.25 compared to the pH 6.75 (P < 0.05). The inhibitory zone of the TA-BSA complex against STNR at pH 6.75 was lower than TA without BSA at 30 and 60 min (P < 0.05), but not at 120 min (P > 0.1). The inhibitory zone of the TA-BSA complex against STNR at pH 7.25 was not decreased at 0, 30, and 60 min compared to TA without BSA (P > 0.1). The recovery rate of TA was 83, 54.8, 10.5, and 19.6% in the gizzard, jejunum, ileum, and ceca, respectively, in broiler chickens. The STNR-infected broilers fed 0.25 g/kg of TA had significantly lower unweighted beta diversity distance compared to the sham-challenged control (SCC) and challenged controlled (CC) group on D 21. TA supplementation linearly (P < 0.05) and quadratically (tendency; P = 0.071) reduced relative abundance of the family Peptostreptococcaceae in broilers infected with STNR on D 7. TA supplementation linearly (P < 0.05) and quadratically (tendency; P = 0.06) increased the relative abundance of the family Erysipelotrichaceae in broilers infected with STNR on D 21. Therefore, TA has potential to be used as an antibacterial agent against the S. Typhimurium infection in broilers.

Optimal treatment of tannic acid for the anti-calcification of bovine jugular veins and the underlying mechanism

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effects of combined treatment with tannic acid and ferric ions on the biomechanical and anti-calcification properties of glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine jugular veins after xenografting.

METHODS

Two-point bending test and uniaxial tensile test were used to evaluate the flexural and biomechanical properties; Subcutaneous implantation in rat and right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction of sheep were used to evaluate the anti-calcification effects; The performance of the graft in sheep models was evaluated every month after the surgery with echocardiography examination. Markers of macrophages, T lymphocytes, smooth muscle cell osteogenic differentiation and matrix metalloproteinases in sheep explants were detected by immunohistochemistry.

RESULTS

The flexibility of the bovine jugular veins cotreated with ferric ions-tannic acid was improved while maintaining biomechanical properties and excellent anti-calcification effects. Echocardiography results showed that the grafts functioned well in the animals without stenosis or reflux of the valve. Immunohistochemical studies showed that the osteogenic differentiation marker (Runx2) was detected in calcified regions and colocalised with the SMC marker (α-SMA). Compared to the glutaraldehyde-treated samples, T-cell marker (CD3), matrix metalloproteinase-2 and 9 expressions were reduced in the ferric ions-tannic acid treated group.

CONCLUSION

Ferric ions-tannic acid treatment can give the conduits better flexibility with excellent biomechanical properties and anti-calcification effects, making it a promising bovine jugular veins processing method.

Inhibitory effect of tannic acid on the growth of Apiospora arundinis and 3-Nitropropionic acid production

AIMS

This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of tannic acid (TA) on the growth of Apiospora arundinis and 3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) production.

METHODS AND RESULTS

To investigate the antifungal mechanism, the effects of TA on the hypha growth, electrical conductivity, hypha morphology, defense-related enzymes, and 3-NPA production of A. arundinis were studied. TA concentrations of 640 and 1280 μg ml-1 exhibited strong antifungal activity against A. arundinis. The results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the hypha of the A. arundinis was severely deformed after TA treatment, and the cell membrane was blurred and thin, vacuoles were obviously shrunken and smaller, and most of the organelles were decomposed into irregular fragments. The increased electrical conductivity and malondialdehyde content indicated that TA caused peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids and damaged the structure of the cell membrane. The decrease of intracellular ATPase and succinate dehydrogenase content indicated that TA damaged the function of mitochondria, and participated in the inhibition of respiratory metabolism. In addition, TA significantly reduced 3-NPA production and completely inhibited 3-NPA production at 640 and 1280 μg ml-1.

CONCLUSION

TA effectively inhibited both growth of A. arundinis in vitro and 3-NPA production.

Tissue adhesive, ROS scavenging and injectable PRP-based 'plasticine' for promoting cartilage repair

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) that has various growth factors has been used clinically in cartilage repair. However, the short residence time and release time at the injury site limit its therapeutic effect. The present study fabricated a granular hydrogel that was assembled from gelatin microspheres and tannic acid through their abundant hydrogen bonding. Gelatin microspheres with the gelatin concentration of 10 wt% and the diameter distribution of 1-10 μm were used to assemble by tannic acid to form the granular hydrogel, which exhibited elasticity under low shear strain, but flowability under higher shear strain. The viscosity decreased with the increase in shear rate. Meanwhile, the granular hydrogel exhibited self-healing feature during rheology test. Thus, granular hydrogel carrying PRP not only exhibited well-performed injectability but also performed like a 'plasticine' that possessed good plasticity. The granular hydrogel showed tissue adhesion ability and reactive oxygen species scavenging ability. Granular hydrogel carrying PRP transplanted to full-thickness articular cartilage defects could integrate well with native cartilage, resulting in newly formed cartilage articular fully filled in defects and well-integrated with the native cartilage and subchondral bone. The unique features of the present granular hydrogel, including injectability, plasticity, porous structure, tissue adhesion and reactive oxygen species scavenging provided an ideal PRP carrier toward cartilage tissue engineering.

Tannic Acid and Ethyl Gallate Potentialize Paclitaxel Effect on Microtubule Dynamics in Hep3B Cells

Among broad-spectrum anticancer agents, paclitaxel (PTX) has proven to be one of the most effective against solid tumors for which more specific treatments are lacking. However, drawbacks such as neurotoxicity and the development of resistance reduce its therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, there is a need for compounds able to improve its activity by synergizing with it or potentiating its effect, thus reducing the doses required. We investigated the interaction between PTX and tannins, other compounds with anticancer activity known to act as repressors of several proteins involved in oncological pathways. We found that both tannic acid (TA) and ethyl gallate (EG) strongly potentiate the toxicity of PTX in Hep3B cells, suggesting their utility in combination therapy. We also found that AT and EG promote tubulin polymerization and enhance the effect of PTX on tubulin, suggesting a direct interaction with tubulin. Biochemical experiments confirmed that TA, but not EG, binds tubulin and potentiates the apparent binding affinity of PTX for the tubulin binding site. Furthermore, the molecular docking of TA to tubulin suggests that TA can bind to two different sites on tubulin, one at the PTX site and the second at the interface of α and β-tubulin (cluster 2). The binding of TA to cluster 2 could explain the overstabilization in the tubulin + PTX combinatorial assay. Finally, we found that EG can inhibit PTX-induced expression of pAkt and pERK defensive protein kinases, which are involved in resistance to PXT, by limiting cell death (apoptosis) and favoring cell proliferation and cell cycle progression. Our results support that tannic acid and ethyl gallate are potential chemotherapeutic agents due to their potentiating effect on paclitaxel.

Dose- and substrate-dependent reduction of enteric methane and ammonia by natural additives in vitro

Ruminants contribute to global warming by emitting greenhouse gasses, particularly methane (CH4) which is a product of rumen fermentation. The use of feed additives able to modulate rumen fermentation is a promising strategy to reduce enteric CH4 and ammonia (NH3) emissions. Among the various strategies investigated, plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) have attracted attention due to their apparent potential to reduce enteric CH4 and NH3 emissions, and it would be possible to use such compounds as feed additives in organic production systems. In an in vitro system simulating rumen fermentation, we have tested the impact of different classes of naturally occurring PSMs; catechin and quercetin (flavonoids), salicylic acid (phenolic acid) and tannic acid (hydrolysable tannin). The PSMs were added to two different basal feeds (maize and grass silages) at three inclusion doses 1.5, 3 and 6% of the feed dry matter (DM). CH4 production was significantly lowered upon addition of quercetin to two basal feeds at doses of 3 and 6%, and this without changes in concentrations of total volatile fatty acid (VFA) produced during fermentation. Quercetin, as the only tested additive, reduced CH4 production, and when added to maize silage and grass silage, the reduction increased linearly with increasing dose, ie., by 51 and 43%, respectively, at a dose of 3% of feed DM and by 86 and 58%, respectively, at a dose of 6% of feed DM. Moreover, quercetin significantly reduced NH3 concentration by >12% at doses of 3 and 6% in feed DM irrespective of the basal feed used as compared to when the basal feeds were incubated alone. Although none of the other additives affected CH4 formation, several additives had significant impacts on concentrations of NH3 and VFAs in the incubated fluid after fermentation. This study demonstrated a dose-dependent ability of quercetin to reduce CH4 emission from rumen fermentation, however, the magnitude of the suppression of CH4 depended on the basal feed. Furthermore, quercetin reduced NH3 concentration irrespective of the basal feed type. These findings encourage to in vivo studies to verify whether quercetin can reduce CH4 emission also in cows.

Therapeutic Nanodiamonds Containing Icariin Ameliorate the Progression of Osteoarthritis in Rats

In present study, icariin (ICA)/tannic acid (TA)-nanodiamonds (NDs) were prepared as follows. ICA was anchored to ND surfaces with absorbed TA (ICA/TA-NDs) and we evaluated their in vitro anti-inflammatory effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages and in vivo cartilage protective effects on a rat model of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis (OA). The ICA/TA-NDs showed prolonged release of ICA from the NDs for up to 28 days in a sustained manner. ICA/TA-NDs inhibited the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory elements, including matrix metalloproteinases-3 (MMP-3), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and increased the mRNA levels of anti-inflammatory factors (i.e., IL-4 and IL-10) in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Animal studies exhibited that intra-articular injection of ICA/TA-NDs notably suppressed levels of IL-6, MMP-3, and TNF-α and induced level of IL-10 in serum of MIA-induced OA rat models in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, these noticeable anti-inflammatory effects of ICA/TA-NDs remarkably contributed to the protection of the progression of MIA-induced OA and cartilage degradation, as exhibited by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), gross findings, and histological investigations. Accordingly, in vitro and in vivo findings suggest that the prolonged ICA delivery of ICA/TA-NDs possesses an excellent latent to improve inflammation as well as defend against cartilage disorder in OA.

MOC Composites for Construction: Improvement in Water Resistance by Addition of Nanodopants and Polyphenol

The topic of modification of magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) using specific functional additives is very much pronounced in the research of alternative building materials. This study deals with the co-doping of MOC by 1D and 2D carbon nanomaterials in order to improve its mechanical properties while using tannic acid (TA) as a surfactant. Furthermore, the effect of TA on MOC also improves its water resistance. As a filler, three size fractions of standard quartz sand are used. The proposed types of MOC-based composites show promising results considering their mechanical, macro- and microstructural, chemical, and hygric properties. The use of 1D and 2D nanoadditives and their mixture enables the improvement in the flexural strength and particularly the softening coefficient, which is the durability parameter characterizing the resistance of the prepared materials to water. After immersion in water for 24 h, the compressive strength of all tested specimens of modified composites was higher than that of the reference composite. Quantitatively, the developed co-doped composites show mechanical parameters comparable to or even better than those of commonly used Portland cement-based materials while maintaining high environmental efficiency. This indicates their potential use as an environmentally friendly alternative to Portland cement-based products.

Drug cross-linking electrospun fiber for effective infected wound healing

The management of infected wounds is still an intractable challenge in clinic. Development of antibacterial wound dressing is of great practical significance for wound management. Herein, a natural-derived antibacterial drug, tannic acid (TA), was incorporated into the electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber (TA/PVA fiber, 952 ± 40 nm in diameter). TA worked as a cross-linker via hydrogen bonding with PVA to improve the physicochemical properties of the fiber and to reach a sustained drug release (88% release of drug at 48 h). Improved mechanical property (0.8-1.2 MPa) and computational simulation validated the formation of the hydrogen bonds between TA and PVA. Moreover, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory characteristics of TA laid the foundation for the application of TA/PVA fiber in repairing infected wounds. Meanwhile, in vitro studies proved the high hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility of TA/PVA fiber. Further in vivo animal investigation showed that the TA/PVA fiber promoted the repair of infected wound by inhibiting the bacterial growth, promoting granulation formation, and collagen matrix deposition, accelerating angiogenesis, and inducing M2 macrophage polarization within 14 days. All the data demonstrated that the TA cross-linked fiber would be a potent dressing for bacteria-infected wound healing.

Tannic Acid and Ca2+ Double-Crosslinked Alginate Films for Passion Fruit Preservation

In this study, the interaction of different concentrations of tannic acid (TA) (10%, 20%, and 30% w/w) and Ca2+ with alginate (SA) was utilized to create double-crosslinked SA films. The resulting films were evaluated for their optical, mechanical, water resistance, and barrier properties, and their microstructure and intermolecular interactions were also characterized. The SA films containing 20% TA showed the best mechanical properties, with an observed increase in tensile strength of 22.54%. In terms of water vapor permeability, the SA film containing 30% TA exhibited the highest barrier property, which was 25.36% higher than that of the pure SA film. Moreover, TA demonstrated a strong UV absorption ability, resulting in a nearly 0% UV transmittance of the SA film at 280 nm. It can be seen that SA films containing 20% TA have excellent barrier and mechanical properties, and the development of such films will be applied to the storage and packaging of fresh food. It is worth noting that this work also investigated the effect of SA coatings containing different concentrations of TA on the preservation of passion fruits for 7 days. The results revealed that passion fruits treated with SA coatings containing a 30% TA concentration maintained a better appearance on the 7th day and had the lowest weight loss and crumpling indices of approximately 8.98% and 2.17, respectively, compared to the other treatment groups. Therefore, based on the overall results, the addition of 30% TA to SA coatings proved to be more effective and can be considered a promising approach for delaying fruit senescence and decay.

Effects of dietary supplementation with microencapsulated Galla chinensis tannins on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and lipid metabolism of young broiler chickens

This study aimed to investigate the impacts of dietary supplementation with Galla chinensis tannins (GCT) on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and lipid metabolism of young broilers. Overall, a total of 216 healthy 1 day-old broilers were randomly allocated to CON group and GCT group, and provided with a basal diet or a basal diet added with 300 mg/kg microencapsulated GCT, respectively, in a 21 days trial. Our findings indicated that dietary GCT addition had no significant effects (p > 0.05) on growth performance. However, GCT supplementation led to a significant reduction in the total cholesterol (TC) concentration in the serum and liver (p < 0.05). Furthermore, GCT supplementation significantly increased the ratios of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and HDL to TC in the serum, in addition to elevating the activities of enzymes related to lipid metabolism in the liver (p < 0.05). Dietary GCT addition also improved the antioxidant capacity of the broilers, as evidenced by a significant decrease in the concentration of malondialdehyde in serum and liver (p < 0.05). Additionally, the GCT group exhibited significantly increased expressions of hepatic genes associated with antioxidant enzymes (HO-1, GPX1, SOD2, SIRT1, CPT-1, and PPARα) (p < 0.05), while the mRNA expression of SREBP-1 was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) compared with the CON group. In conclusion, dietary addition of 300 mg/kg microencapsulated GCT improved the antioxidant status and lipid metabolism of broilers without affecting their growth performance.

Sustainable Bio-Based Epoxy Resins with Tunable Thermal and Mechanic Properties and Superior Anti-Corrosion Performance

Bio-based epoxy thermoset resins have been developed from epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) cured with tannic acid (TA). These two substances of vegetable origin have been gathering attention due to their accessibility, favorable economic conditions, and convenient chemical functionalization. TA's suitable high phenolic functionalization has been used to crosslink ESO by adjusting the -OH (from TA):epoxy (from ESO) molar ratio from 0.5:1 to 2.5:1. By means of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, resulting in thermosets that evidenced optimal curing properties under moderate conditions (150-160 °C). The thermogravimetric analysis of the cured resins showed thermal stability up to 261 °C, with modulable mechanical and thermal properties determined by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamical mechanical thermal analysis, and tensile testing. Water contact angle measurements (83-87°) and water absorption tests (0.6-4.5 initial weight% intake) were performed to assess the suitability of the resins as waterproof coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were performed to characterize the anti-corrosive capability of these coatings on carbon steel substrates. Excellent barrier properties have been demonstrated due to the high electrical isolation and water impermeability of these oil-based coatings, without signs of deterioration over 6 months of immersion in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. These results demonstrate the suitability of the developed materials as anti-corrosion coatings for specific applications.

Tannic Acid-Induced Gelation of Aqueous Suspensions of Cellulose Nanocrystals

Nanocellulose hydrogels are a crucial category of soft biomaterials with versatile applications in tissue engineering, artificial extracellular matrices, and drug-delivery systems. In the present work, a simple and novel method, involving the self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) induced by tannic acid (TA), was developed to construct a stable hydrogel (SH-CNC/TA) with oriented porous network structures. The gelation process is driven by the H-bonding interaction between the hydroxyl groups of CNCs and the catechol groups of TA, as substantiated by the atoms in molecules topology analysis and FTIR spectra. Interestingly, the assembled hydrogels exhibited a tunable hierarchical porous structure and mechanical moduli by varying the mass ratio of CNCs to TA. Furthermore, these hydrogels also demonstrate rapid self-healing ability due to the dynamic nature of the H-bond. Additionally, the structural stability of the SH-CNC/TA hydrogel could be further enhanced and adjusted by introducing coordination bonding between metal cations and TA. This H-bonding driven self-assembly method may promote the development of smart cellulose hydrogels with unique microstructures and properties for biomedical and other applications.

Comprehensive Analyses of Breads Supplemented with Tannic Acids

Tannic acid (TA) has been recently considered as a new dough additive for improving the bread-making quality of wheat. However, the effects of TA supplementation on the sensory quality parameters (color, crumb grain structure, and sensory properties) of bread have not been studied. Further, the potential of TA supplementation in bread-making quality improvement has not been evaluated by using commercial flour. In the present study, three commercial wheat flours (namely, XL, QZG, and QZZ) with different gluten qualities were used to evaluate the effects of TA supplementation (in concentrations of 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively). TA supplementation did not change the proximate composition of the breads but increased the volumes and specific volumes of XL and QZG breads. TA supplementation enhanced antioxidant activities, with 0.3% TA significantly increasing the antioxidant capacities of bread made from all three flour samples by approximately four-fold (FRAP method)/three-fold (ABTS method). Positive effects of TA on the reduction in crumb hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were observed in the XL bread, as determined by the texture profile analysis. For the analyses on visual and sensory attributes, our results suggest that TA did not affect the crust color, but only slightly reduced the L* (lightness) and b* (yellowness) values of the crumb and increased the a* (redness) value. TA supplementation also increased the porosity, total cell area, and mean cell area. Satisfactorily, the sensory evaluation results demonstrate that TA-supplemented breads did not exhibit negative sensory attributes when compared to the non-TA-added breads; rather, the attributes were even increased. In summary, TA-supplemented breads generally had not only better baking quality attributes and enhanced antioxidant activities, but, more importantly, presented high consumer acceptance in multiple commercial flour samples. Our results support the commercial potential of TA to be used as a dough improver.

The Impact of Tannic Acid Consumption on Bone Mineralization

Tannic acid (TA) is an organic compound belonging to the tannin group. Like other tannins, it has an affinity for endogenous proteins, including digestive enzymes, which can result in the reduced digestibility and absorption of nutrients. It can also form complexes with mineral components, reducing their absorption. In some cases, this can be beneficial, such as in the case of toxic metals, but sometimes it may have a detrimental effect on the body when it involves essential mineral components like Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, or Fe. Therefore, the impact of TA on bone health should be considered from both perspectives. This relatively short review summarizes the available information and research findings on TA, with a particular focus on its potential impact on bone health. It is worth noting that future research and clinical studies may provide more detailed and precise information on this topic, allowing for a better understanding of the role of TA in maintaining the integrity of the musculoskeletal system. Despite its brevity, this paper represents a valuable contribution to the analysis of the potential benefits and challenges associated with TA in the context of bone health. We anticipate that future research will continue along this important research line, expanding our knowledge of the influence of this compound on the skeletal system and its potential therapeutic applications.

Robust but On-Demand Detachable Wet Tissue Adhesive Hydrogel Enhanced with Modified Tannic Acid

Adhesives with robust but readily detachable wet tissue adhesion are of great significance for wound closure. Polyelectrolyte complex adhesive (PECA) is an important wet tissue adhesive. However, its relatively weak cohesive and adhesive strength cannot satisfy clinical applications. Herein, modified tannic acid (mTA) with a catechol group, a long alkyl hydrophobic chain, and a phenyl group was prepared first, and then, it was mixed with acrylic acid (AA) and polyethylenimine (PEI), followed by UV photopolymerization to make a wet tissue adhesive hydrogel with tough cohesion and adhesion strength. The hydrogel has a strong wet tissue interfacial toughness of ∼1552 J/m2, good mechanical properties (∼7220 kPa cohesive strength, ∼873% strain, and ∼33,370 kJ/m3 toughness), and a bursting pressure of ∼1575 mmHg on wet porcine skin. The hydrogel can realize quick and effective adhesion to various wet biological tissues including porcine skin, liver, kidney, and heart and can be changed easily with triggering urea solution to avoid tissue damage or uncomfortable pain to the patient. This biosafe adhesive hydrogel is very promising for wound closure and may provide new ideas for the design of robust wet tissue adhesives.

A high adhesion co-assembly based on myclobutanil and tannic acid for sustainable plant disease management

BACKGROUND

Pesticides are irreplaceable inputs for protecting crops from pests and improving crop yield and quality. Self-assembly nanotechnology is a promising strategy by which to develop novel nano-formulations for pesticides. Nano-formulations improve the effective utilization of pesticides and reduce risks to the environment because of their eco-friendly preparation, high drug loading, and desirable physicochemical properties. Here, to enhance the utilization efficiency of myclobutanil (MYC) and develop a novel nano-formulation, carrier-free co-assembled nanoparticles (MT NPs) based on MYC and tannic acid (TA) were prepared by noncovalent molecular interactions using a green preparation process without any additives.

RESULTS

The results showed that the prepared spherical nanoparticles had good stability in neutral and acidic aqueous solutions, low surface tension (40.53 mN m-1 ), high rainfastness, and good maximum retention values on plant leaves. Release of active ingredients from MT NPs could be regulated by altering the molar ratio of subassemblies in the co-assembly and the pH of the environment. Antifungal experiments demonstrated that MT NPs had better activities against Alternaria alternata and Fusarium graminearum [half-maximal effective concentration (EC50 ) = 6.40 and 77.08 mg/L] compared with free MYC (EC50  = 11.46 and 124.82 mg/L), TA (EC50  = 251.19 and 503.81 mg/L), and an MYC + TA mixture (EC50  = 9.62 and 136.21 mg/L). These results suggested that MYC and TA incorporated in the co-assembled nanoparticles had a synergistic antifungal activity. The results of a genotoxicity assessment indicated that MT NPs could reduce the genotoxicity of MYC to plant cells.

CONCLUSION

Co-assembled MT NPs with synergistic antifungal activity have outstanding potential for the management of plant diseases. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Encapsulation of tannic acid in polyvinylidene fluoride mediated electrospun nanofibers and its antibiofilm and antibacterial activities

In the past 15 years or more, interest in polymer-mediated nanofibers (NFs), a significant class of nanomaterials, has grown. Although fibers with a diameter of less than 1 mm are frequently commonly referred to as NFs, and are typically defined as having a diameter of less than several hundreds of nanometers. Due to the increased antibiotic resistance of many diseases nowadays, NFs with antibacterial activity are quite important. A flexible technique for creating NFs with the desired characteristics is called electrospinning. This research article describes how to make electrospun NFs of tannic acid (TA) with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the template. As a result, the absorbance of the obtained NFs has been raised without forming any additional peaks in the spectral ranges. The obtained NF has a gradual increase in intensity, and the FT-IR data show that the TA is present in the NFs. FE-SEM images show that the NFs are discovered to be completely bead-free. Since TA reduced the viscosity of the spinning solution while marginally increasing solution conductivity, PVDF NFs have a greater average fiber diameter (AFD) than NFs of TA with PVDF, which is likely a result of the TA solutions in it. The findings showed that TA greatly decreased S. aureus and E. coli's ability to attach. The acquired NFs created in this work may have significant potential for reducing the pathogenicity of S. aureus and E. coli as well as their ability to build biofilms.

Highly Reversible Zn Metal Anode with Low Voltage Hysteresis Enabled by Tannic Acid Chemistry

The zinc dendrites and side reactions formed on the zinc anode have greatly hindered the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein, we introduce tannic acid (TA) as an additive in the ZnSO4 (ZSO) electrolyte to enhance the reversible Zn plating/stripping behavior. TA molecules are found to adsorb onto the zinc surface, forming a passivation layer and replacing some of the H2O molecules in the Zn2+ solvation sheath to form the [Zn(H2O)6-xTAx]2+ complex; this process effectively prevents side reactions. Moreover, the lower desolvation energy barrier of the [Zn(H2O)6-xTAx]2+ structure facilitates uniform Zn metal deposition and enables a stable plating/stripping lifespan of 2500 h with low voltage hysteresis (53 mV at 0.5 mA cm-2) as compared to the ZSO electrolyte (167 h and 104 mV). Additionally, the incorporation of the MnO2 cathode in the TA + ZSO electrolyte shows improved cycling capacity retention, from 64% (ZSO) to 85% (TA + ZSO), after 250 cycles at 1 A g-1, demonstrating the effectiveness of the TA additive in enhancing the performance of ZIBs.

Facile Synthesis of Self-Adhesion and Ion-Conducting 2-Acrylamido-2-Methylpropane Sulfonic Acid/Tannic Acid Hydrogels Using Electron Beam Irradiation

Tannic acid (TA) can be used as an additive to improve the properties of hydrogels, but it acts as a radical scavenger, which hinders radical polymerization. In this study, we successfully and easily synthesized a TA-incorporated 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) hydrogel using an electron beam (E-beam) in a one-pot process at room temperature. TA successfully grafted onto AMPS polymer chains under E-beam irradiation, but higher TA content reduced grafting efficiency and prevented hydrogel formation. Peel strength of the AMPS hydrogel increased proportionally with TA, but cohesive failure and substrate residue occurred above 1.25 phm (parts per 100 g of AMPS) TA. Tensile strength peaked at 0.25 phm TA but decreased below the control value at 1.25 phm. Tensile elongation exceeded 2000% with TA addition. Peel strength varied significantly with substrate type. The wood substrate had the highest peel strength value of 150 N/m, while pork skin had a low value of 11.5 N/m. However, the addition of TA increased the peel strength by over 300%. The ionic conductivity of the AMPS/TA hydrogel increased from 0.9 S/m to 1.52 S/m with TA content, while the swelling ratio decreased by 50% upon TA addition and increased slightly thereafter.

Dietary Supplementation of Tannic Acid Promotes Performance of Beef Cattle via Alleviating Liver Lipid Peroxidation and Improving Glucose Metabolism and Rumen Fermentation

This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary tannic acid (TAN) on the gas production, growth performance, antioxidant capacity, rumen microflora, and fermentation function of beef cattle through in vitro and in vivo experiments. TAN was evaluated at 0.15% (dry matter basis, DM) in the in vitro experiment and 0.20% (DM basis) in the animal feeding experiment. The in vitro results revealed that compared with control (CON, basal diet without TAN), the addition of TAN significantly increased the cumulative gas production and asymptotic gas production per 0.20 g dry matter substrate (p < 0.01), with a tendency to reduce methane concentration after 96 h of fermentation (p = 0.10). Furthermore, TAN supplementation significantly suppressed the relative abundance of Methanosphaera and Methanobacteriaceae in the fermentation fluid (LDA > 2.50, p < 0.05). The in vivo experiment showed that compared with CON, the dietary TAN significantly improved average daily gain (+0.15 kg/d), dressing percent (+1.30%), net meat percentage (+1.60%), and serum glucose concentration (+23.35%) of beef cattle (p < 0.05), while it also significantly reduced hepatic malondialdehyde contents by 25.69% (p = 0.02). Moreover, the TAN group showed significantly higher alpha diversity (p < 0.05) and increased relative abundance of Ruminococcus and Saccharomonas (LDA > 2.50, p < 0.05), while the relative abundance of Prevotellaceae in rumen microbial community was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) as compared to that of the CON group. In conclusion, the dietary supplementation of TAN could improve the growth and slaughter performance and health status of beef cattle, and these favorable effects might be attributed to its ability to alleviate liver lipid peroxidation, enhance glucose metabolism, and promote a balanced rumen microbiota for optimal fermentation.
