Epigenetic alterations and advancement of lymphoma treatment

Lymphomas, complex and heterogeneous malignant tumors, originate from the lymphopoietic system. These tumors are notorious for their high recurrence rates and resistance to treatment, which leads to poor prognoses. As ongoing research has shown, epigenetic modifications like DNA methylation, histone modifications, non-coding RNA regulation, and RNA modifications play crucial roles in lymphoma pathogenesis. Epigenetic modification-targeting drugs have exhibited therapeutic efficacy and tolerability in both monotherapy and combination lymphoma therapy. This review discusses pathogenic mechanisms and potential epigenetic therapeutic targets in common lymphomas, offering new avenues for lymphoma diagnosis and treatment. We also discuss the shortcomings of current lymphoma treatments, while suggesting potential areas for future research, in order to improve the prediction and prognosis of lymphoma.

Acute lung injury: a view from the perspective of necroptosis

BACKGROUND

ALI/ARDS is a syndrome of acute onset characterized by progressive hypoxemia and noncardiogenic pulmonary edema as the primary clinical manifestations. Necroptosis is a form of programmed cell necrosis that is precisely regulated by molecular signals. This process is characterized by organelle swelling and membrane rupture, is highly immunogenic, involves extensive crosstalk with various cellular stress mechanisms, and is significantly implicated in the onset and progression of ALI/ARDS.

METHODS

The current body of literature on necroptosis and ALI/ARDS was thoroughly reviewed. Initially, an overview of the molecular mechanism of necroptosis was provided, followed by an examination of its interactions with apoptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis, PANOptosis, and NETosis. Subsequently, the involvement of necroptosis in various stages of ALI/ARDS progression was delineated. Lastly, drugs targeting necroptosis, biomarkers, and current obstacles were presented.

CONCLUSION

Necroptosis plays an important role in the progression of ALI/ARDS. However, since ALI/ARDS is a clinical syndrome caused by a variety of mechanisms, we emphasize that while focusing on necroptosis, it may be more beneficial to treat ALI/ARDS by collaborating with other mechanisms.

Efficacy, Safety, and Population Pharmacokinetics of Eltrombopag in Children with Different Severities of Aplastic Anemia

Eltrombopag was approved as a first-line treatment for patients older than 2 years old with severe aplastic anemia (SAA). However, data on eltrombopag in children with different types of aplastic anemia (AA), especially non-severe AA (NSAA), are limited. We performed a prospective, single-arm, and observational study to investigate eltrombopag's efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics in children with NSAA, SAA, and very severe AA (VSAA). The efficacy and safety were assessed every 3 months. The population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model was used to depict the pharmacokinetic profile of eltrombopag. Twenty-three AA children with an average age of 7.9 (range of 3.0-14.0) years were enrolled. The response (complete and partial response) rate was 12.5%, 50.0%, and 100.0% after 3, 6, and 12 months in patients with NSAA. For patients with SAA and VSAA, these response rates were 46.7%, 61.5%, and 87.5%. Hepatotoxicity occurred in one patient. Fifty-three blood samples were used to build the PPK model. Body weight was the only covariate for apparent clearance (CL/F) and volume of distribution. The allele-T carrier of adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette transporter G2 was found to increase eltrombopag's clearance. However, when normalized by weight, the clearance between the wild-type and variant showed no statistical difference. In patients with response, children with NSAA exhibited lower area under the curve from time zero to infinity, higher CL/F, and higher weight-adjusted CL/F than those with SAA or VSAA. However, the differences were not statistically significant. The results may support further individualized treatment of eltrombopag in children with AA.

ILT4 facilitates angiogenesis in non-small cell lung cancer

Antiangiogenic therapy targeting VEGF-A has become the standard of first-line therapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, its clinical response rate is still less than 50%, and most patients eventually develop resistance, even when using combination therapy with chemotherapy. The major cause of resistance is the activation of complex bypass signals that induce angiogenesis and tumor progression. Therefore, exploring novel proangiogenic mechanisms and developing promising targets for combination therapy are crucial for improving the efficacy of antiangiogenic therapy. Immunoglobulin-like transcript (ILT) 4 is a classic immunosuppressive molecule that inhibits myeloid cell activation. Recent studies have shown that tumor cell-derived ILT4 drives tumor progression via the induction of malignant biologies and creation of an immunosuppressive microenvironment. However, whether and how ILT4 participates in NSCLC angiogenesis remain elusive. Herein, we found that enriched ILT4 in NSCLC is positively correlated with high microvessel density, advanced disease, and poor overall survival. Tumor cell-derived ILT4 induced angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo and tumor progression and metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, ILT4 was upregulated by its ligand angiopoietin-like protein 2 (ANGPTL2). Their interaction subsequently activated the ERK1/2 signaling pathway to increase the secretion of the proangiogenic factors VEGF-A and MMP-9, which are responsible for NSCLC angiogenesis. Our study explored a novel mechanism for ILT4-induced tumor progression and provided a potential target for antiangiogenic therapy in NSCLC.

Effects of tension on mitochondrial autophagy and osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells

This study aimed to explore the osteogenic ability and mitochondrial autophagy of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) under cyclic tensile stress (CTS). Primary PDLSCs were isolated from the periodontal membrane and cultured by passage. Alizarin red staining, alkaline phosphatase detection, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and Western blotting were used to detect the osteogenic differentiation level of PDLSCs. Mitochondrial autophagy in PDLSCs after CTS was measured using a mitochondrial autophagy detection kit, and the expression levels of autophagy-related proteins LC3B, LAMP1 and Beclin1 were measured using cellular immunofluorescence technology, RT-PCR and Western blot. After applying CTS, the osteogenic differentiation ability of PDLSCs was significantly improved, and the expression of alkaline phosphatase on the surface of the cell membrane and the formation of calcium nodules in PDLSCs were significantly increased respectively. We also studied the relevant mechanism of action and found that applying CTS can promote the osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs and is related to the activation of mitochondrial autophagy. This study provides new insights into the mechanism of increased osteogenic differentiation on the tension side of orthodontic teeth and provides new experimental evidence for the involvement of mitochondrial autophagy in the regulation of osteogenic differentiation.

Photothermal-Enhanced Dual Inhibition of Lactate/Kynurenine Metabolism for Promoting Tumor Immunotherapy

Traditionally referred to as "metabolic junk", lactate has now been recognized as essential "energy currency" and crucial "messenger" that contributes to tumor evolution, immunosuppression, etc., thus presenting a promising strategy for antitumor interventions. Similarly, kynurenine (Kyn) also exerts an immunosuppressive function, thereby significantly compromising the effectiveness of immunotherapy. This study proposes and validates a strategy for enhancing immunotherapy through photothermal-assisted depletion of lactate sustained by cycle-like O2 supply, with blocking the tryptophan (Trp)/Kyn metabolic pathway. In brief, a nanozyme therapeutic agent (PNDPL) is constructed, which mainly consists of PtBi nanozymes, lactate oxidase (LOX) and the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) inhibitor NLG919. The PtBi nanozymes, which exhibit a catalase (CAT)-like activity, form a positive feedback loop with LOX to consume lactate while self-supplying O2 . Moreover, PtBi nanozymes retain enzyme-like performance even in a slightly acidic tumor microenvironment. Under 1064 nm irradiation, photothermal therapy (PTT) not only induces tumor cell death but also accelerates lactate exhaustion. Therefore, the combination of lactate depletion-induced starvation therapy and PTT, along with the blocking of IDO-mediated immune escape, effectively inhibits tumor growth and reverses immunosuppressive microenvironment, thus preventing tumor metastasis. This study represents the first investigation into the synergistic antitumor effects by lactate metabolism regulation and IDO-related immunotherapy.

Diluting the Resistance of Built-in Electric Fields in Oxygen Vacancy-enriched Ru/NiMoO4-x for Enhanced Hydrogen Spillover in Alkaline Seawater Splitting

Recently, hydrogen spillover based binary (HSBB) catalysts have received widespread attention due to the sufficiently utilized reaction sites. However, the specific regulation mechanism of spillover intensity is still unclear. Herein, we have fabricated oxygen vacancies enriched Ru/NiMoO4-x to investigate the internal relationship between electron supply and mechanism of hydrogen spillover enhancement. The DFT calculations cooperate with in situ Raman spectrum to uncover that the H* spillover from NiMoO4-x to Ru. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies weakened the electron supply from Ru to NiMoO4-x , which contributes to dilute the resistance of built-in electric field (BEF) for hydrogen spillover. In addition, the higher ion concentration in electrolyte will promote the H* adsorption step obviously, which is demonstrated by in situ EIS tests. As a result, the Ru/NiMoO4-x exhibits a low overpotential of 206 mV at 3.0 A cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 28.8 mV dec-1 , and an excellent durability of 550 h at the current density of 0.5 A cm-2 for HER in 1.0 M KOH seawater.

Mitochondrial myopathy without extraocular muscle involvement: a unique clinicopathologic profile

OBJECTIVE

Mitochondrial myopathy without extraocular muscles involvement (MiMy) represents a distinct form of mitochondrial disorder predominantly affecting proximal/distal or axial muscles, with its phenotypic, genotypic features, and long-term prognosis poorly understood.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study conducted at a national diagnostic center for mitochondrial disease involved 47 MiMy patients, from a cohort of 643 mitochondrial disease cases followed up at Qilu Hospital from January 1, 2000, to January 1, 2021. We compared the clinical, pathological, and genetic features of MiMy to progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO) and mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) patients.

RESULTS

MiMy patients demonstrated a more pronounced muscle involvement syndrome, with lower 6MWT scores, higher FSS, and lower BMI compared to PEO and MELAS patients. Serum levels of creatinine kinase (CK), lactate, and growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) were substantially elevated in MiMy patients. Nearly a third (31.9%) displayed signs of subclinical peripheral neuropathy, mostly axonal neuropathy. Muscle biopsies revealed that cytochrome c oxidase strong (COX-s) ragged-red fibers (RRFs) were a typical pathological feature in MiMy patients. Genetic analysis predominantly revealed mtDNA point pathogenic variants (59.6%) and less frequently single (12.8%) or multiple (4.2%) mtDNA deletions. During the follow-up, a majority (76.1%) of MiMy patients experienced stabilization or improvement after therapeutic intervention.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides a comprehensive profile of MiMy through a large patient cohort, elucidating its unique clinical, genetic, and pathological features. These findings offer significant insights into the diagnostic and therapeutic management of MiMy, ultimately aiming to ameliorate patient outcomes and enhance the quality of life.

Self-Destructive Copper Carriers Induce Pyroptosis and Cuproptosis for Efficient Tumor Immunotherapy Against Dormant and Recurrent Tumors

Activating the strong immune system is a key initiative to counteract dormant tumors and prevent recurrence. Herein, self-destructive and multienzymatically active copper-quinone-GOx nanoparticles (abbreviated as CQG NPs) have been designed to induce harmonious and balanced pyroptosis and cuproptosis using the "Tai Chi mindset" to awaken the immune response for suppressing dormant and recurrent tumors. This cleverly designed material can disrupt the antioxidant defense mechanism of tumor cells by inhibiting the nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2)-quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) signaling pathway. Furthermore, combined with its excellent multienzyme activity, it activates NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)-mediated pyroptosis. Meanwhile, cuproptosis can be triggered by copper ions released from the self-destructive disintegration of CQG NPs and the sensitivity of cancer cells to cuproptosis is enhanced through the depletion of endogenous copper chelators via the Michael addition reaction between glutathione (GSH) and quinone ligand, oxygen production from catalase-like reaction, and starvation-induced glucose deficiency. More importantly, CQG NPs-induced pyroptosis and cuproptosis can promote immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) remodeling, enhance the infiltration of immune cells into the tumor, and activate robust systemic immunity. Collectively, this study provides a new strategy to resist tumor dormancy, prevent tumor recurrence, and improve the clinical prognosis of tumors.

Individualized Use of 6-Mercaptopurine in Chinese Children with ALL: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial

Continuous 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) dose titration is necessary because of its narrow therapeutic index and frequently encountered dose-limiting hematopoietic toxicity. However, evidence-based guidelines for gene-based 6-MP dosing have not been established for Chinese children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This multicenter, randomized, open-label, active-controlled clinical trial randomly assigned Chinese children with low- or intermediate-risk ALL in a 1:1 ratio to receive TPMT-NUDT15 gene-based dosing of 6-MP (N = 44, 10 to 50 mg/m2 /day) or standard dosing (N = 44, 50 mg/m2 /day) during maintenance therapy. The primary end point was the incidence of 6-MP myelosuppression in both groups. Secondary end points included frequencies of 6-MP hepatotoxicity, duration of myelosuppression and leukopenia, event-free survival, and steady-state concentrations of active metabolites (6-thioguaninenucleotides and 6-methylmercaptopurine nucleotides) in erythrocytes. A 2.2-fold decrease in myelosuppression, the primary end point, was observed in the gene-based-dose group using ~ 50% of the standard initial 6-MP dose (odds ratio, 0.26, 95% confidence interval, 0.11 to 0.64, P = 0.003). Patients in the gene-based-dose group had a significantly lower risk of developing thiopurine-induced myelosuppression and leukopenia (P = 0.015 and P = 0.022, respectively). No significant differences were observed in the secondary end points of the incidence of hepatotoxicity and steady-state concentrations of active metabolites in erythrocytes between the two groups. TPMT- and NUDT15-based dosing of 6-MP will significantly contribute toward further reducing the incidence of leukopenia in Chinese children with ALL. Electrolyte Engineering Toward High Performance High Nickel (Ni ≥ 80%) Lithium-Ion Batteries

High nickel (Ni ≥ 80%) lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high specific energy are one of the most important technical routes to resolve the growing endurance anxieties. However, because of their extremely aggressive chemistries, high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs suffer from poor cycle life and safety performance, which hinder their large-scale commercial applications. Among varied strategies, electrolyte engineering is very powerful to simultaneously enhance the cycle life and safety of high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs. In this review, the pivotal challenges faced by high-Ni oxide cathodes and conventional LiPF6 -carbonate-based electrolytes are comprehensively summarized. Then, the functional additives design guidelines for LiPF6 -carbonate -based electrolytes and the design principles of high voltage resistance/high safety novel electrolytes are systematically elaborated to resolve these pivotal challenges. Moreover, the proposed thermal runaway mechanisms of high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs are also reviewed to provide useful perspectives for the design of high-safety electrolytes. Finally, the potential research directions of electrolyte engineering toward high-performance high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs are provided. This review will have an important impact on electrolyte innovation as well as the commercial evolution of high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs, and also will be significant to breakthrough the energy density ceiling of LIBs.

Health-related quality of life among cancer survivors: pre-existing chronic conditions are to be given priority

PURPOSE

This study aimed to describe the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of cancer survivors in China by the five-level EuroQol-5-dimension (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire and to explore the impact of the comorbidity of pre-existing chronic conditions on HRQoL in cancer survivors.

METHODS

Data on cancer survivors were obtained from two cross-sectional surveys conducted in Shandong Province, China. The data of the Chinese general population, the Chinese diabetes population, the Chinese hypertension population, and the Chinese urban population from the published studies were used as the controls. The χ2 test was conducted to compare the incidence of five-dimensional problems between the study and control populations. The non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were performed to examine the differences in EQ-5D-5L utility scores. Besides, the Tobit regression model was used to examine the variables influencing the EQ-5D-5L utility score.

RESULTS

One thousand fifty-one adult cancer survivors were included. Cancer survivors had significantly lower EQ-5D-5L utility scores (Z =  - 15.939, P < 0.001) and EQ-VAS scores (Z =  - 11.156, P < 0.001) than the general adult population. The average EQ-5D-5L utility score of hypertensive cancer survivors was lower than that of the hypertensive population (Z =  - 1.610, P = 0.107), but the difference was not statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

Compared to the general population, the HRQoL of cancer survivors was extremely poor in all dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L. Pre-existing chronic conditions had significant antecedent effects on the HRQoL of cancer survivors. Therefore, more attention should be paid to chronic diseases, and effective interventions should be adopted based on this.

A non-canonical role of endothelin converting enzyme 1 (ECE1) in promoting lung cancer development via directly targeting protein kinase B (AKT)

BACKGROUND

Lung cancer is the second most common malignancy in the world, and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) in particular is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Endothelin converting enzyme 1 (ECE1) is a membrane-bound metalloprotease involved in endothelin-1 (ET-1) processing and regulates vasoconstriction. However, very few studies have reported the involvement of ECE1 in regulating tumor cell proliferation, and the mechanism remains poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to determine the role of ECE1 in lung cancer development.

METHODS

The Cancer Genome Atlas database and Kaplan-Meier plotter were used to assess the association between ECE1 and lung cancer. The expression of ECE1 was detected using immunohistochemistry staining and western blotting. A variety of in vitro assays were performed to evaluate the effects of ECE1 on the colony formation, proliferation, migration and invasion using ECE1 knockdown lung cancer cells. The gene expression profiles regulated by ECE1 were investigated by RNA sequencing. An immunoprecipitation assay and immunofluorescence assay were used to evaluate the mechanism underlying the regulatory effect of ECE1 on protein kinase B (AKT). The effect of ECE1 on tumor development was assessed by xenografted lung cancer cells in either C57BL/6 mice or nude mice.

RESULTS

ECE1 was upregulated in LUAD and correlated with the poor prognosis of patients with LUAD. Functional studies showed that knockdown of ECE1 retarded the progression of tumors formed by lung cancer cells at least partly by inhibiting tumor cell proliferation. Moreover, ECE1 accelerated tumor cell proliferation through promoting AKT activation dispensable of its canonical target ET-1. Mechanically, ECE1 interacted with the pleckstrin homology (PH) domain of AKT and facilitated its translocation to the plasma membrane for activation. Furthermore, the inhibition of AKT activity counteracted the lung cancer cell growth inhibition observed both in vitro and in xenografts caused by ECE1 suppression.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study reveals a non-canonical function of ECE1 in regulating AKT activation and cell proliferation, which provides the basis for the development of a novel strategy for the intervention of cancer including LUAD by abrogating ECE1-AKT signaling.

Associations of Blood Absolute Neutrophil Count and Cytokines With Cognitive Function in Dementia-Free Participants: A Population-Based Cohort Study

BACKGROUND

The relationships of neutrophils and cytokines with cognitive dysfunction are poorly defined. We aimed to investigate the association of peripheral blood absolute neutrophil count (ANC) with cognitive function in older adults and to further explore the mediating role of serum cytokines in this association.

METHODS

This population-based cohort study included 1 666 dementia-free participants (age ≥60 years) derived from baseline examinations (March-September 2018) of the Multimodal Intervention to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China (MIND-China); of these, 1 087 participants completed follow-up examinations in October-December 2019. We used a neuropsychological test battery to assess episodic memory, verbal fluency, attention, and executive function at the baseline and follow-up examinations. We used Mindray BC-6800 automated hematology analyzer to measure ANC and Meso Scale Discovery to measure serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and eotaxin-3.

RESULTS

The linear regression analysis of cross-sectional data at baseline (n = 1 666) suggested that increased ANC was significantly associated with a lower episodic memory z score (β coefficient: -0.149, 95% CI: -0.274 to -0.023) and lower long-delayed free recall z score (-0.216, -0.361 to -0.070). Serum IL-6 and eotaxin-3 could mediate 16.16% to 20.21% and 7.55% to 9.35%, respectively, of these associations. The analysis of longitudinal data (n = 1 087) showed a J-shaped relationship of ANC with decline in episodic memory z score (p for nonlinear = .049), and a U-shaped relationship between ANC and decline in long-delayed free recall z score (p for nonlinear = .043).

CONCLUSIONS

Increased neutrophils are associated with poor cognitive performance and accelerated decline in episodic memory, and the cross-sectional association is partly mediated by serum cytokines.

Manipulating Electron Redistribution in Ni2 P for Enhanced Alkaline Seawater Electrolysis

Developing bifunctional electrocatalyst for seawater splitting remains a persistent challenge. Herein, an approach is proposed through density functional theory (DFT) preanalysis to manipulate electron redistribution in Ni2 P addressed by cation doping and vacancy engineering. The needle-like Fe-doped Ni2 P with P vacancy (Fe-Ni2 Pv) is successfully synthesized on nickel foam, exhibiting a superior bifunctional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity for seawater electrolysis in alkaline condition. As a result, bifunctional Fe-Ni2 Pv achieves the industrially required current densities of 1.0 and 3.0 A cm-2 at low voltages of 1.68 and 1.73 V, respectively, for seawater splitting at 60 °C in 6.0 m KOH circumstances. The theoretical calculation and the experimental results collectively reveal the reasons for the enhancement of catalyst activity. Specifically, Fe doping and P vacancies can accelerate the reconstruction of OER active species and optimize the hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔGH* ) for HER. In addition, the active sites of Fe-Ni2 Pv are identified, where P vacancies greatly improve the electrical conductivity and Ni sites are the dominant OER active centers, meanwhile Fe atoms as active centers for the HER. The study provides a deep insight into the exploration for the enhancement of activity of nickel-based phosphide catalysts and the identification of their real active centers.

Sb-Doped Cs3 TbCl6 Nanocrystals for Highly Efficient Narrow-Band Green Emission and X-Ray Imaging

Metal halide nanocrystals (NCs) with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are desirable for lighting, display, and X-ray detection. Herein, the novel lanthanide-based halide NCs are committed to designing and optimizing the optical and scintillating properties, so as to unravel the PL origin, exciton dynamics, and optoelectronic applications. Sb-doped zero-dimensional (0D) Cs3 TbCl6 NCs exhibit a green emission with a narrow full width of half maximum of 8.6 nm, and the best PLQY of 48.1% is about three times higher than that of undoped NCs. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that 0D crystalline and electronic structures make the exciton highly localized on [TbCl6 ]3- octahedron, which boosts the Cl- -Tb3+ charge transfer process, thus resulting in bright Tb3+ emission. More importantly, the introduction of Sb3+ not only facilitates the photon absorption transition, but also builds an effective thermally boosting energy transfer channel assisted by [SbCl6 ]3- -induced self-trapped state, which is responsible for the PL enhancement. The high luminescence efficiency and negligible self-absorption of the Cs3 TbCl6 : Sb nanoscintillator enable a more sensitive X-ray detection response compared with undoped sample. The study opens a new perspective to deeply understand the excited state dynamics of metal halide NCs, which helps to design high-performance luminescent lanthanide-based nanomaterials.

Spectral data fusion in nondestructive detection of food products: Strategies, recent applications, and future perspectives

In recent years, the food industry has shown a growing interest in the development of rapid and nondestructive analytical methods. However, the utilization of a solitary nondestructive detection technique offers only a constrained extent of physical or chemical insights regarding the sample under examination. To overcome this limitation, the amalgamation of spectroscopy with data fusion strategies has emerged as a promising approach. This comprehensive review delves into the fundamental principles and merits of low-level, mid-level, and high-level data fusion strategies within the domain of food analysis. Various data fusion techniques encompassing spectra-to-spectra, spectra-to-machine vision, spectra-to-electronic nose, and spectra-to-nuclear magnetic resonance are summarized. Moreover, this review also provides an overview of the latest applications of spectral data fusion techniques (SDFTs) for classification, adulteration, quality evaluation, and contaminant detection within the purview of food safety analysis. It also addresses current challenges and future prospects associated with SDFTs in real-world applications. Despite the extant technical intricacy, the ongoing evolution of online data fusion platforms and the emergence of smartphone-based multi-sensor fusion detection technology augur well for the pragmatic realization of SDFTs, endowing them with formidable capabilities for both qualitative and quantitative analysis in the realm of food analysis.

Hydro-Sensitive, In Situ Ultrafast Physical Self-Gelatinizing, and Red Blood Cells Strengthened Hemostatic Adhesive Powder with Antibiosis and Immunoregulation for Wound Repair

Immediate and effective hemostatic treatments for complex bleeding wounds are an urgent clinical demand. Hemostatic materials with characteristics of adhesion, sealing, anti-infection, and concrescence promotion have drawn growing concerns. However, pure natural multifunctional hemostatic materials with in situ ultrafast self-gelation are rarely reported. In this study, a hydro-sensitive collagen/tannic acid (ColTA) natural hemostatic powder is developed that can in situ self-gel to form adhesive by the non-covalent crosslinking between tannic acid (TA) and collagen (Col) in liquids. The physical interactions endow ColTA adhesive with the characteristics of instantaneous formation and high adhesion at various substrate surfaces. Crucially, ColTA powder adhesive shows an enhanced adhesion performance in the presence of blood due to the electrostatic interactions between ColTA adhesive and red blood cells, conducive to effective in situ sealing and rapid hemostasis. The biocompatible and hemocompatible ColTA adhesive can effectively control bleeding and seal the wounds of the caudal vein, liver, heart, and femoral arteries in rats. Furthermore, the low-cost and ready-to-use ColTA adhesive powder also possesses good antibacterial and inhibiting biofilm formation ability, and can efficiently regulate immune response by the NF-κB pathway to promote wound repair, making it a highly promising hemostatic material with great potential for biomedical applications.

Isolation and Characterization of n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Enteromorpha prolifera Lipids and Their Preventive Effects on Ulcerative Colitis in C57BL/6J Mice

Enteromorpha prolifera (EP) is a green alga that causes green bloom worldwide. This study aimed to isolate and identify n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from EP oil obtained via supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and to explore its preventive effects against dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in C57BL/6J mice. In EP oil, we found the novel n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid C16:4n-3 and two unusual fatty acids C18:4n-3 and C16:3n-3, using GC-MS. The administration of EP oil reduced histopathological of symptoms colitis and the shortening of the colon length. Pro-inflammatory cytokines of IL-6 and TNF-α in serum of EP oil treatment were lower than DSS treatment (by 37.63% and 83.52%), and IL-6 gene expression in the colon was lower in than DSS group by 48.28%, and IL-10 in serum was higher than DSS group by 2.88-fold. Furthermore, the protein expression of p-STAT3 by the EP oil treatment was significantly reduced compared with DSS treatment group by 73.61%. Lipidomics study suggested that phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine were positively associated with the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, while cholesteryl ester and sphingomyelin were negatively related to inflammation cytokines in the EP oil group. The present results indicated that EP oil rich in n-3 PUFA contains a novel fatty acid C16:4n-3, as well as two uncommon fatty acids C18:4n-3 and C16:3n-3. EP oil could prevent DSS-induced ulcerative colitis by regulating the JAK/STAT pathway and lipid metabolism.

Microwave Phosphine-Plasma-Assisted Ultrafast Synthesis of Halogen-Doped Ru/RuP2 with Surface Intermediate Adsorption Modulation for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Anionic modification engineering is a crucial approach to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, halogen elements (X = Cl, Br, and I)-modified Ru-based nanosheets (X-Ru/RuP2 ) are designed by rapid and eco-friendly microwave-phosphide plasma approach within 60 s. Experimental and density functional theory calculations verify that the introduced halogen element, especially Br, can optimize the surface intermediates adsorption. Specially, the designed Br-Ru/RuP2 favors the water dissociation and following hydrogen adsorption/desorption process. Then, the as-synthesized Br-Ru/RuP2 exhibits low overpotential of 34 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 coupled with small Tafel slope of 27 mV dec-1 in alkaline electrolyte with excellent long-term stability. Moreover, the electrocatalytic performances in acid and neutral media are also boosted via Br element modification. This work paves a novel way to regulate the electronic structure of Ru-based compounds, and then can boost the electrocatalytic kinetics.

The Probiotic Bacillus hwajinpoensis Colonizes the Digestive System of Crassostrea gigas Larvae and Protects Them from Vibrio alginolyticus Infection

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is one of the most important cultured marine species around the world. Production of Pacific oysters in China has depended primarily on hatchery produced seeds since 2016, with the successful introduction and development of triploid oysters. However, the seed supply of Pacific oysters is threatened by recurring mass mortality events in recent years. Vibriosis is the most commonly encountered disease associated with intensive oyster culture in hatcheries and nurseries. Vibrio alginolyticus and Bacillus hwajinpoensis were the two strains with pathogenic and probiotic effects, respectively, identified during the Pacific oyster larvae production. To monitor their colonization process in Pacific oyster larvae, green fluorescent protein (GFP) and red fluorescent protein (RFP) were labeled to the pathogenic V. alginolyticus and the probiotic B. hwajinpoensis stain, respectively. The pathogenic and probiotic effects of the two strains during the colonization process were then assessed. Stabile expression of GFP and RFP were observed in corresponding stains, and the capabilities of growth, biofilm formation and in vitro adhesion of GFP- and RFP- tagged stains were not significantly different from those of the wild-type strains. Usage of probiotics of 105 CFU/mL significantly inhibited the growth of pathogenic V. alginolyticus and reduced the mortality of D-sharped larvae. Both the pathogenic and probiotic strains employed a similar route to enter and colonize the oyster larvae, which indicates that competing with pathogens for binding and spreading sites were one of the mechanisms of B. hwajinpoensis to provide the probiotic effects to oyster larvae. In summary, employment of fluorescence-tagged pathogenic and probiotic strains simultaneously provides us with an excellent bioassay model to investigate the potential mechanisms of probiotics.

Regulating N Species in N-Doped Carbon Electro-Catalysts for High-Efficiency Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide in Simulated Seawater

Electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an attractive and alternative route for the on-site production of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). The electrochemical synthesis of H2 O2 in neutral electrolyte is in early studying stage and promising in ocean-energy application. Herein, N-doped carbon materials (N-Cx ) with different N types are prepared through the pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. The N-Cx catalysts, especially N-C800 , exhibit an attracting 2e- ORR catalytic activity, corresponding to a high H2 O2 selectivity (≈95%) and preferable stability in 0.5 m NaCl solution. Additionally, the N-C800 possesses an attractive H2 O2 production amount up to 631.2 mmol g-1  h-1 and high Faraday efficiency (79.8%) in H-type cell. The remarkable 2e- ORR electrocatalytic performance of N-Cx catalysts is associated with the N species and N content in the materials. Density functional theory calculations suggest carbon atoms adjacent to graphitic N are the main catalytic sites and exhibit a smaller activation energy, which are more responsible than those in pyridinic N and pyrrolic N doped carbon materials. Furthermore, the N-C800 catalyst demonstrates an effective antibacterial performance for marine bacteria in simulated seawater. This work provides a new insight for electro-generation of H2 O2 in neutral electrolyte and triggers a great promise in ocean-energy application.

In-Situ Fabrication of Sustainable-N-Doped-Carbon-Nanotube-Encapsulated CoNi Heterogenous Nanocomposites for High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Developing carbon encapsulated magnetic composites with rational design of microstructure for achieving high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption in a facile, sustainable, and energy-efficiency approach is highly demanded yet remains challenging. Here, a type of N-doped carbon nanotube (CNT) encapsulated CoNi alloy nanocomposites with diverse heterostructures are synthesized via the facile, sustainable autocatalytic pyrolysis of porous CoNi-layered double hydroxide/melamine. Specifically, the formation mechanism of the encapsulated structure and the effects of heterogenous microstructure and composition on the EMW absorption performance are ascertained. With the presence of melamine, CoNi alloy emerges its autocatalysis effect to generate N-doped CNTs, leading to unique heterostructure and high oxidation stability. The abundant heterogeneous interfaces induce strong interfacial polarization to EMWs and optimize impedance matching characteristic. Combined with the inherent high conductive and magnetic loss capabilities, the nanocomposites accomplish a high-efficiency EMW absorption performance even at a low filling ratio. The minimum reflection loss of -84.0 dB at the thickness of 3.2 mm and a maximum effective bandwidth of 4.3 GHz are obtained, comparable to the best EMW absorbers. Integrated with the facile, controllable, and sustainable preparation approach of the heterogenous nanocomposites, the work shows a great promise of the nanocarbon encapsulation protocol for achieving lightweight, high-performance EMW absorption materials.

Anti-Melanogenesis and Anti-Photoaging Effects of the Sulfated Polysaccharides Isolated from the Brown Seaweed Padina boryana

Sulfated polysaccharides isolated from seaweeds are thought of as ideal ingredients in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetics industries. Our previous study isolated and characterized sulfated polysaccharides from Padina boryana. The sulfated polysaccharides of Padina boryana (PBP) were extracted, and the antioxidant activity of PBP was evaluated. The results indicate that PBP possesses antioxidant effects and potential in the cosmetic industry. To further investigate the potential of PBP in cosmetics, the photoprotective and anti-melanogenesis effects of PBP were evaluated. The anti-melanogenesis test results display that PBP reduced the melanin content in the murine melanoma cells stimulated by alpha melanocyte-stimulating hormone from 203.7% to 183.64%, 144.63%, and 127.57% at concentrations of 25 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, and 100 μg/mL, respectively. The anti-photodamage test results showed that PBP significantly protected skin cells against UVB-stimulated photodamage. PBP suppressed human epidermal keratinocyte (HaCaT cell) death by inhibiting apoptosis and reducing the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species. The intracellular reactive oxygen species level of HaCaT cells irradiated by UVB was reduced from 192.67% to 181.22%, 170.25%, and 160.48% by 25 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, and 100 μg/mL PBP, respectively. In addition, PBP remarkably reduced UVB-induced human dermal fibroblast damage by suppressing oxidative damage, inhibiting collagen degradation, and attenuating inflammatory responses. These results indicate that PBP possesses photoprotective and anti-melanogenesis activities and suggest that PBP is a potential ingredient in the cosmetic industry.

Research progress on MOFs and their derivatives as promising and efficient electrode materials for electrocatalytic hydrogen production from water

Hydrogen energy is considered to be the most potential "ultimate energy source" due to its high combustion calorific value, cleanliness, and pollution-free characteristics. Furthermore, the production of hydrogen via the electrolysis of water has the advantages of simplicity, high efficiency, environmentally safe, and high-purity hydrogen. However, it is also associated with issues such as high-power consumption for the reaction and limited large-scale application of noble metal catalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous composite materials composed of metal ions and organic functional groups through orderly coordination with large specific surface areas and large porosity. Herein, we focus on the research status of MOFs and their transition metal derivatives for electrocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen and briefly describe the reaction mechanism and evaluation parameters of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic behavior and catalytic activity of different MOF-based catalysts and their morphology, elemental composition, and synthetic strategy is analyzed and discussed. The reasons for the excellent activity and poor stability of the original MOF materials for the electrolysis of water reaction are shown through analysis, and using various means to improve the catalytic activity by changing the electronic structure, active sites, and charge transfer rate, MOF-based catalysts were obtained. Finally, we present perspectives on the future development of MOFs for the electrocatalytic decomposition of water.

RUNX1 promotes liver fibrosis progression through regulating TGF-β signalling

Liver fibrosis is caused by chronic liver injury. There are limited treatments for it, and the pathogenesis is unclear. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis, and to try to identify new potential therapeutic targets. For this study we used the carbon tetrachloride abdominal injection induced liver fibrosis animal model in mice. Primary hepatic stellate cell isolation was performed by a density-gradient separation method, and this was followed by immunofluorescence stain analyses. Signal pathway analysis was performed by dual-luciferase reporter assay and western blotting. Our results showed that RUNX1 was upregulated in cirrhotic liver tissues compared with normal liver tissues. Besides, overexpression of RUNX1 caused more severe liver fibrosis lesions than control group under CCl4 -induced conditions. Moreover, α-SMA expression in the RUNX1 overexpression group was significantly higher than in the control group. Interestingly, we found that RUNX1 could promote the activation of TGF-β/Smads in a dual-luciferase reporter assay. Thus we demonstrated that RUNX1 could be considered as a new regulator of hepatic fibrosis by activating TGF-β/Smads signalling. Based on this, we concluded that RUNX1 may be developed as a new therapeutic target in the treatment of liver fibrosis in the future. In addition, this study also provides a new insight about the aetiology of liver fibrosis.

Comparison of Surface Morphology and Tool Wear in the Machining of Ti-6Al-4V Alloys with Uncoated and TiAlN Tools under Dry, Minimum Quantity Lubrication, Flood Cooling, and Low-Temperature Spray Jet Cooling Conditions

TiAlN-coated carbide tools have been used to machine Ti-6Al-4V alloys in aviation workshops. However, the effect of TiAlN coating on surface morphology and tool wear in the processing of Ti-6Al-4V alloys under various cooling conditions has not been reported in the public published literature. In our current research, turning experiments of Ti-6Al-4V with uncoated and TiAlN tools under dry, MQL, flood cooling, and cryogenic spray jet cooling conditions were carried out. The machined surface roughness and tool life were selected as the two main quantitative indexes for estimating the effects of TiAlN coating on the cutting performance of Ti-6Al-4V under various cooling conditions. The results showed that TiAlN coating makes it hard to improve the machined surface roughness and tool wear of a cutting titanium alloy at a low speed of 75 m/min compared to that achieved by uncoated tools. The TiAlN tools presented excellent tool life in turning Ti-6Al-4V at a high speed of 150 m/min compared to that achieved by uncoated tools. From the perspective of obtaining finished surface roughness and superior tool life in high-speed turning Ti-6Al-4V, the selection of TiAlN tools is feasible and reasonable under the cryogenic spray jet cooling condition. The dedicative results and conclusions of this research could guide the optimized selection of cutting tools in machining Ti-6Al-4V for the aviation industry.

A Europium Nanosphere-Based Time-Resolved Fluorescent Immunochromatographic Assay for the Rapid Screening of 4,4'-Dinitrocarbanilide: Aiming at Improving Strip Method Performance

Considering that the strip method is simple and convenient for users, a Europium nanosphere-based time-resolved fluorescent immunochromatographic assay (TRFICA) for the rapid screening of 4,4'-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) was developed to improve the performance of strip assays. After optimization, TRFICA showed IC₅₀, the limit of detection, and cut-off values of 0.4, 0.07, and 5.0 ng mL^-1, respectively. No significant cross-reactivity (CR < 0.1%) with 15 DNC analogs was observed in the developed method. TRFICA was validated for DNC detection in spiked chicken homogenates, and recoveries ranged from 77.3% to 92.7%, with coefficients of variation of <14.9%. Moreover, the time needed for the detection procedure, including the sample pre-treatment, was less than 30 min for TRFICA, which had never been achieved before in other immunoassays. The newly developed strip test is a rapid, sensitive, quantitative, and cost-effective on-site screening technique for DNC analysis in chicken muscle.

Alkaline etched hydrochar-based magnetic adsorbents produced from pharmaceutical industry waste for organic dye removal

A large amount of pharmaceutical industry waste (PIW) was inevitably produced every year, and the PIW can be degraded by high temperature reaction to form porous structures. The study proposed an innovative pathway to valorize PIW with hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) coupled with alkali etching (AE). Without adding any additives, magnetic hydrochar could be generated with rough surface topography and suitable specific surface area (S_BET) by this method. Effects of HTC conditions and alkaline solution concentrations on the physicochemical and adsorption properties of PIW were investigated, and adsorption mechanism was explored. Based on evaluations of the magnetism, cyclic regeneration, and heavy metal leaching properties of the products, the feasibility of preparing magnetic adsorbents with solid waste by HTC coupled AE was established. The alkaline etching pharmaceutical industry waste (AEPIW) hydrochar showed the highest S_BET (54.64 m²/g) after the PIW was treated by 260 °C for 2 h plus 1 mol/L KOH. The removal rate of methylene blue (MB) could exceed 90% and the saturated magnetization was ~8 emu/g. The proposed new method was able to convert the low-value solid industrial waste into high-performance hydrochar-based magnetic adsorbents, which was tested to have a capability to efficiently and sustainably remove organic pollutants from water.

Separation and Analysis of Oxygen-Containing Compounds in a Shaanxi Middle/Low-Temperature Coal Tar

A middle/low-temperature coal tar (M/LTCT) was obtained from a low-temperature carbonization plant in Shaanxi, China. The M/LTCT was separated into light components and coal tar pitch through extraction. A series of alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, oxygen-containing arenes (OCAs), and nitrogen-containing arenes were fractionated from light components by medium-pressure preparative chromatography with gradient elution using petroleum ether and ethyl acetate. They were analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The OCAs were analyzed by a Fourier transform Orbitrap MS (quadrupole exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometer), and the molecular distribution of the O ₁-O ₆ species was studied. OCAs are mainly oxygen-containing aromatic compounds, including aromatic phenols, furans, alkoxy aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic ethers, aromatic aldehydes, aromatic ketones, and aromatic acids. The position of the oxygen atom on the aromatic ring and the condensation form of the aromatic ring are studied.

Formation and Structure of Nanotubes in Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Aqueous Solution

Self-assembled structures have attracted much attention for their potential applications in biological and electrochemical studies. Understanding the aggregation mechanism is necessary for utilizing the structures and improving the properties. In this study, the tubular cluster aggregations formed by the 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium salicylate ([C₁₂mim][Sal]) have been studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The rod-like and funnel-shaped structures were observed during the simulations, and finally, the nanotube structure enclosed by a bilayer membrane was formed. For the first time, the point cloud fitting method was used to obtain the axis equation of the tubular cluster. Based on the equation, the structure of tubular clusters was analyzed in detail. The imidazolium ring and anions were distributed at the ionic liquid-water interface, while the dodecyl groups were buried in the nanotube membrane away from the water. Electrostatic interactions between cations and anions played a dominant role in stabilizing the structure of the nanotube. The tubular cluster size, membrane thickness, and permeability of water molecules through the membrane of the cluster were also calculated. Furthermore, the orientation analysis revealed that multitudinous aggregation structures could be formed by the long alkyl chain in aqueous solution, which might be beneficial for the strengthening and separating processes.

Hydrothermal treatment: An efficient food waste disposal technology

The quantities of food waste (FW) are increasing yearly. Proper disposal of FW is essential for reusing value-added products, environmental protection, and human health. Based on the typical characteristics of high moisture content and high organic content of FW, hydrothermal treatment (HTT), as a novel thermochemical treatment technology, plays unique effects in the disposal and utilization of FW. The HTT of FW has attracted more and more attention in recent years, however, there are few conclusive reviews about the progress of the HTT of FW. HTT is an excellent approach to converting energy-rich materials into energy-dense fuels and valuable chemicals. This process can handle biomass with relatively high moisture content and allows efficient heat integration. This mini-review presents the current knowledge of recent advances in HTT of FW. The effects of HTT temperature and duration on organic nutritional compositions (including carbohydrates, starch, lipids, protein, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, etc.) and physicochemical properties (including pH, elemental composition, functional groups, fuel properties, etc.) and structural properties of FW are evaluated. The compositions of FW can degrade during HTT so that the physical and chemical properties of FW can be changed. The application and economic analyses of HTT in FW are summarized. Finally, the analyses of challenges and future perspectives on HTT of FW have shown that industrial reactors should be built effectively, and techno-economic analysis, overall energy balance, and life cycle assessment of the HTT process are necessary. The mini-review offers new approaches and perspectives for the efficient reuse of food waste.

Independently tunable all-dielectric synthetic multi-spectral metamaterials based on Mie resonance

A single metamaterial (MM) is generally designed to operate in only one band, and the MMs with different dimensions of meta-atoms are required to be integrated to achieve multi-spectral responses simultaneously. In this study, an all-dielectric synthetic multi-spectral metamaterial (SMM) that can efficiently operate in the visible and terahertz (THz) ranges by incorporating nanoscale features into microscale unit cells is demonstrated and investigated numerically. The resonant frequency of the proposed SMM in both regimes can be tuned independently by changing the geometric parameters such as diameter, gap, width and height of unit cells functional in two different regions, whilst maintaining high reflectance efficiency. Results show that a variety of colors can be produced from red to purple in the visible range with maximal reflectance as high as 83% while the peak frequency of the SMM can be adjusted from 8.12 to 2.13 THz in the THz range with maximum reflectance up to 94%. The reflection characteristics of the SMM mainly originate from the electric dipole (ED) and magnetic dipole (MD) resonances via Mie scattering in both regions. The strategy of this research offers the possibility of applications in bio/chemical sensing, multi-spectral imaging, filtering, detection, modulation and so on.

Enhanced extraordinary terahertz transmission through coupling between silicon resonators

By using Mie resonance coupling effects, low-loss silicon particles as receiving or transmitting antennas can strongly localize the electromagnetic field. Enhanced extraordinary optical transmission (EEOT) is generated by placing two such silicon particles symmetrically on both sides of subwavelength hole arrays in the terahertz (THz) region. When the hole radius r is 17 times smaller than the resonance wavelength λ (r/λ = 0.06), the enhancement factors of the resonator-hole and the resonator-resonator coupling structures are 154- and 629-fold compared to that of the hole-only structure, respectively. The current distribution, magnetic field and Poynting vector are numerically simulated to reveal the mechanism of the proposed structure. Moreover, the Mie resonance coupling and the induced THz EEOT can be tuned in a wide frequency range. Our results provide a reference for the miniaturization of THz systems.

Tunable Extraordinary Optical Transmission with Graphene in Terahertz

Tunable extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) with graphene is realized using a novel metallic ring-rod nested structure in the terahertz frequency regime. The generated double-enhanced transmission peaks primarily originate from the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). On using graphene, the resonating surface plasmon distribution changes in the reaction plane, which disturbs the generation of LSPRs. By regulating the Fermi energy (E _f) of the graphene to reach a certain level, an adjustment from bimodal EOT to unimodal EOT is obtained. As the E _f of the graphene integrated beneath the rod increases to 0.5 eV, the transmittance of the peak at 2.42 THz decreases to 6%. Moreover, the transmission peak at 1.77 THz virtually disappears due to the E _f increasing to 0.7 eV when the graphene is placed beneath the ring. The significant tuning capabilities of the bimodal EOT indicate its promising application prospects in frequency-selective surfaces, communication, filtering, and radar.

Investigation on the α/δ Crystal Transition of Poly(l-lactic Acid) with Different Molecular Weights

Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) crystal possesses a complex polymorphism, and the formation mechanism of various crystal forms has been a hot research topic in the field of polymer condensate matter. In this research, five kinds of PLLA with different molecular weights were prepared by ring-opening polymerization with strict dehydration operations and multistep purification treatments. Then, thin film isothermal crystallization experiments were carried out to obtain crystallized samples. Previous research has proven that the PLLA α crystal form is usually formed at a temperature above 120 °C and the PLLA δ (or α') crystal form is usually formed at a temperature below 120 °C. However, in this research, the characterization results indicated that the PLLA crystal changed from δ form to α form with the decrease of molecular weight at a temperature of 80 °C. Considering the molecular weight effect, the paper argued that the transitions of the α/δ crystal form are not only associated with temperature, but also related to entanglement state before crystallization. The small-angle X-ray scattering of the PLLA crystal and rheology analysis of the PLLA melt before crystallization further proved the significant role of entanglement. Finally, we tentatively proposed the entanglement effect mechanism on the transitions of the α/δ crystal form.

Exploring the Dominant Role of Atomic- and Nano-Ruthenium as Active Sites for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Both Acidic and Alkaline Media

Ru nanoparticles (NPs) and single atoms (SAs)-based materials have been investigated as alternative electrocatalysts to Pt/C for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Exploring the dominant role of atomic- and nano-ruthenium as active sites in acidic and alkaline media is very necessary for optimizing the performance. Herein, an electrocatalyst containing both Ru SAs and NPs anchored on defective carbon (RuSA+NP /DC) has been synthesized via a Ru-alginate metal-organic supramolecules conversion method. RuSA+NP /DC exhibits low overpotentials of 16.6 and 18.8 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, respectively. Notably, its mass activities are dramatically improved, which are about 1.1 and 2.4 times those of Pt/C at an overpotential of 50 mV in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that Ru SAs own the most appropriate H* adsorption strength and thus, plays a dominant role for HER in acid electrolyte, while Ru NPs facilitate the dissociation of H2 O that is the rate-determining step in alkaline electrolyte, leading to a remarkable HER activity.

A wide-angle and TE/TM polarization-insensitive terahertz metamaterial near-perfect absorber based on a multi-layer plasmonic structure

A kind of near-perfect metamaterial absorber, made of only Au and Si, has been presented in the terahertz band with extremely high absorptance. A flexible design method is proposed, which could create absorbers with four independent functions as follows. First, selective perfect absorption is achieved at a single frequency, which means the absorptance is more than 99.9% at the required frequency and almost 0% at adjacent frequencies. Second, nearly 100% perfect absorption is realized at more frequencies, which can be changed by simply adjusting the geometric parameters. Third, broadband absorption with a controllable band is gained, and the average absorptance exceeds 99% from 1.2 to 2 THz. Finally, the combination of single-frequency absorption and broadband absorption is accomplished, which greatly expands the application prospects of the proposed absorber. Besides, the absorber exhibits high performance over a wide range of incident angles from 0° to 60°. Meanwhile, it is insensitive to both TE and TM waves. The aforementioned design idea can be extended to other bands.
