Abstract
Axial chirality is a prevalent and important phenomenon in chemistry. Herein we report a combination of dynamic covalent chemistry and axial chirality for the development of a versatile platform for the binding and chirality sensing of multiple classes of mononucleophiles. An equilibrium between an open aldehyde and its cyclic hemiaminal within biphenyl derivatives enabled the dynamic incorporation of a broad range of alcohols, thiols, primary amines, and secondary amines with high efficiency. Selectivity toward different classes of nucleophiles was also achieved by regulating the distinct reactivity of the system with external stimuli. Through induced helicity as a result of central-to-axial chirality transfer, the handedness and ee values of chiral monoalcohol and monoamine analytes were reported by circular dichroism. The strategies introduced herein should find application in many contexts, including assembly, sensing, and labeling.

Abstract
1,1'-Biphenyl-2,2'-diphosphanes with an achiral bridge spanning C-5 and C-5' form atropisomers that are enantiomers. Accessing them in an atropisomerically pure form requires resolving a racemic mixture thereof or of a bis(phosphane oxide) precursor. 1,1'-Biphenyl-2,2'-diphosphanes with a homochiral bridge spanning C-5 and C-5' form atropisomers that are diastereomers. We synthesized the first compound of this kind 1) atropselectively and 2) under thermodynamic control-seemingly a first-time exploit in diphosphane synthesis. The selectivity-inducing step was a high-temperature reduction of two non-interconverting bis(phosphane oxide) atropisomers (60:40 mixture). It furnished the desired diphosphane atropisomerically pure (and atropconvergently because the yield was 67 %). This diphosphane proved worthwhile in Tsuji-Trost allylations, the Hayashi addition of phenylboronic acid to cyclohexenone, and the asymmetric hydrogenation of methyl acetoacetate (up to 95 % yield and 95 % ee).

Abstract
We report herein a novel atropoenantioselective redox-neutral amination of biaryl compounds triggered by a cascade of borrowing hydrogen and dynamic kinetic resolution under the cooperative catalysis of a chiral iridium complex and an achiral Brønsted acid. This protocol features broad substrate scope and good functional-group tolerance, and allows the rapid assembly of axially chiral biaryl compounds in good to high yields and with high to excellent enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Arylation is a fundamental reaction that can be mostly fulfilled by electrophilic aromatic substitution and transition-metal-catalysed aryl functionalization. Although the azo group has been used as a directing group for many transformations via transition-metal-catalysed aryl carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bond activation, there remain significant unmet challenges in organocatalytic arylation. Here, we show that the azo group can effectively act as both a directing and activating group for organocatalytic asymmetric arylation of indoles via formal nucleophilic aromatic substitution of azobenzene derivatives. Thus, a wide range of axially chiral arylindoles have been achieved in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities by utilizing chiral phosphoric acid as catalyst. Furthermore, highly enantioenriched pyrroloindoles bearing two contiguous quaternary chiral centres have also been obtained via a cascade enantioselective formal nucleophilic aromatic substitution-cyclization process. This strategy should be useful in other related research fields and will open new avenues for organocatalytic asymmetric aryl functionalization.

Abstract
A novel catalytic system for oxidative cross-coupling of readily oxidized phenols with poor nucleophilic phenolic partners based on an iron meso-tetraphenylporphyrin chloride (Fe[TPP]Cl) complex in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol (HFIP) was developed. The unique chemoselectivity of this reaction is attributed to the coupling between a liberated phenoxyl radical with an iron-ligated phenolic coupling partner. The conditions are scalable for preparing a long list of unsymmetrical biphenols assembled from a less reactive phenolic unit substituted with alkyl or halide groups.

Abstract
Bifunctional organocatalysts bearing amino and urea functional groups in a chiral molecular skeleton were applied to the enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral benzamides via aromatic electrophilic bromination. The results demonstrate the versatility of bifunctional organocatalysts for the enantioselective construction of axially chiral compounds. Moderate to good enantioselectivities were afforded with a range of benzamide substrates. Mechanistic investigations were also carried out.

Abstract
The enantioselective syntheses of axially chiral heterobiaryls were accomplished through the aromatic electrophilic halogenation of 3-(quinolin-8-yl)phenols with bifunctional organocatalysts that control the molecular conformations during successive halogenations. Axially chiral quinoline derivatives, which have rarely been synthesized in an enantioselective catalytic manner, were afforded in moderate-to-good enantioselectivities through bromination, and an analogous protocol also enabled enantioselective iodination. In addition, this catalytic reaction, which allows enantioselective control through the use of mono-ortho-substituted substrates, allowed the asymmetric synthesis of 8-arylquinoline derivatives bearing two different halogen groups in high enantioselectivities.

Organocatalytic atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral styrenes. Nat Commun 2017; 8:15238. Abstract
Axially chiral compounds are widespread in biologically active compounds and are useful chiral ligands or organocatalysts in asymmetric catalysis. It is well-known that styrenes are one of the most abundant and principal feedstocks and thus represent excellent prospective building blocks for chemical synthesis. Driven by the development of atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral styrene derivatives, we discovered herein the asymmetric organocatalytic approach via direct Michael addition reaction of substituted diones/ketone esters/malononitrile to alkynals. The axially chiral styrene compounds were produced with good chemical yields, enantioselectivities and almost complete E/Z-selectivities through a secondary amine-catalysed iminium activation strategy under mild conditions. Such structural motifs are important precursors for further transformations into biologically active compounds and synthetic useful intermediates and may have potential applications in asymmetric synthesis as olefin ligands or organocatalysts. Many methods exist for the atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral biaryls, but axially chiral styrenes are much less explored. Here the authors report an organocatalytic procedure for the synthesis of configurationally stable, axially chiral styrenes with high enantio- and diastereoselectivities.

Abstract
Stereoconvergent catalysis is an important subset of asymmetric synthesis that encompasses stereoablative transformations, dynamic kinetic resolutions, and dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformations. Initially, only enzymes were known to catalyze dynamic kinetic processes, but recently various synthetic catalysts have been developed. This Review summarizes major advances in nonenzymatic, transition-metal-promoted dynamic asymmetric transformations reported between 2005 and 2015.
