Abstract
On the basis of many literature measurements, a critical overview is given on essential noncovalent interactions in synthetic supramolecular complexes, accompanied by analyses with selected proteins. The methods, which can be applied to derive binding increments for single noncovalent interactions, start with the evaluation of consistency and additivity with a sufficiently large number of different host-guest complexes by applying linear free energy relations. Other strategies involve the use of double mutant cycles, of molecular balances, of dynamic combinatorial libraries, and of crystal structures. Promises and limitations of these strategies are discussed. Most of the analyses stem from solution studies, but a few also from gas phase. The empirically derived interactions are then presented on the basis of selected complexes with respect to ion pairing, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic contributions, halogen bonding, π-π-stacking, dispersive forces, cation-π and anion-π interactions, and contributions from the hydrophobic effect. Cooperativity in host-guest complexes as well as in self-assembly, and entropy factors are briefly highlighted. Abstract
A series of fluorescent anion transporters have been synthesised and their anion transport properties and interactions with cancer cell lines studied.
A series of fluorescent anion transporters consisting of a urea or thiourea group linked to a naphthalimide fluorophore have been synthesised and their anion transport properties studied. The compounds possess similar anion transport properties to (thio)urea-based anionophores that have previously been reported. Fluorescence studies in cells show all anionophores cross the plasma membrane and localise within the interior of cells. The most lipophilic, aromatic substituted transporters localise homogeneously throughout the cell and are toxic towards cancer cells with the highly fluorinated compound 6 being the most effective. The least lipophilic, alkyl substituted transporters localise in specific vesicles and are non-toxic to cells. This work provides new insight to the actions of anionophores in cells and may be useful in the design of novel antineoplastic agents.

Abstract
Two synthetic approaches-temperature variation and anion templation-allowed for the selective formation of a [2]catenane ([2]C4+ ) or a trefoil knot (TK6+ ), or for the enhanced formation of a Solomon link (SL8+ ), all from a simple set of starting materials (Zn(ii) acetate, diformylpyridine (DFP) and a diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (DAB)) in mixed aqueous solutions. The catenane formed exclusively at 90 °C in a 1 : 1 mixed solvent of D2O and MeOD. In the presence of bromide ion as template, TK6+ formed exclusively at 50 °C in the same solvent. In the solid state, TK6+ hosts two bromide ions in its central cavity by forming six Csp2 -H hydrogen bonds. In D2O, TK6+ , which was originally prepared as a trifluoroacetate (TFA) salt, was found to exchange two TFA counterions for two monovalent anions of different sizes and shapes, which lodged within the knot's central cavity. In contrast to bromide, the larger triflate anion (CF3SO3-) promoted the formation of SL8+ , which was characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Two dimensional heteronuclear 19F-1H-HOSEY NMR experiments detected CH···F interactions inside the cavity of SL8+ . Thus, the product distribution of this dynamic link forming system is sensitive to temperature and the size and shape of the anion template, and one of the products, TK6+ , is capable of binding a variety of monovalent anions in D2O with high affinity (with log β2 values of 4 to 6 being typical).

Abstract
Three novel C 3-symmetric tris-salicylaldimine Schiff base based "off-on" fluorescence sensors have been designed and synthesized. The synthetic approach involves a simple imine bond (C = N) formation between 1,3,5-tris(4'-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and 3,5-substituted salicylaldehydes. The presence of salicylaldehyde units on periphery of the tris-salicylaldimine Schiff bases masks the fluorescence of TAPB core. Interestingly, binding of fluoride ions to the salicylaldehyde units turns the fluorescence "on" in visible region. Fluoride ion detection limits for the present sensors have been calculated to be in the range of 0.17-3.0 ppm, which depends on the nature of the salicylaldehyde units.

Abstract
Nanojars, a novel class of neutral anion-incarcerating agents of the general formula [Cu(II)(OH)(pz)]n (Cun; n = 27-31, pz = pyrazolate anion), efficiently sequester various oxoanions with large hydration energies from water. In this work, we explore whether substituents on the pyrazole ligand interfere with nanojar formation, and whether appropriate substituents could be employed to tune the solubility of nanojars in solvents of interest, such as long-chain aliphatic hydrocarbons (solvent of choice for large-scale liquid-liquid extraction processes) and water. To this end, we conducted a comprehensive study using 40 different pyrazole ligands, with one, two or three substituents in their 3-, 4- and 5-positions. The corresponding nanojars are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and/or electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The results show that Cun-nanojars with various substituents in the pyrazole 4-position, including long chains, phenyl and CF3 groups, can be obtained. Straight chains are also tolerated at the pyrazole 3-position, and favor the Cu30-nanojar. Homoleptic nanojars, however, could not be obtained with phenyl or CF3 groups. Nevertheless, if used in mixture with the parent non-substituted pyrazole, sterically hindered pyrazoles do form heteroleptic nanojars. With 3,5-disubstituted pyrazoles, only heteroleptic nanojars are accessible. The crystal structure of novel nanojars (Bu4N)2[CO3⊂{Cu30(OH)30(3,5-Me2pz)y(pz)30-y}] (y = 14 and 15) is presented. We find that in contrast to the parent nanojar, which is insoluble in aliphatic solvents and water, nanojars with alkyl substituents are soluble in saturated hydrocarbon solvents, whereas nanojars based on novel pyrazoles, functionalized with oligoether chains, are readily soluble in water. Liquid-liquid extraction of carbonate from water under basic pH is presented for the first time.

Abstract
Chiral fluorescent chemosensors featuring macrocycles comprising BINOL auxiliary and an array of hydrogen bond donors were synthesized. To enhance fluorescence of the chemosensors, conjugated moieties were attached to the 3,3'-positions of the BINOL auxiliary. The resulting chemosensors recognize a number of carboxylates, namely, enantiomers of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, 2-phenylpropanoate, mandelate, and phenylalanine in a stereoselective fashion. Depending on the structure of the chemosensor, the presence of carboxylate yields fluorescence quenching or amplification. This information-rich signal can be used to determine the identity of the analyte including the sense of chirality. Quantitative experiments were performed aimed at analysis of enantiomeric excess of chiral carboxylates. The quantitative analysis of enantiomeric composition of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and phenylalanine shows that the sensors correctly identify mixtures with varying enantiomeric excess and correctly predict the enantiomeric excess of unknown samples with error of prediction <1.6%.

Abstract
Synthetic anion transporters (anionophores) have potential as biomedical research tools and therapeutics. However, the efficient and specific delivery of these highly lipophilic molecules to a target cell membrane is non-trivial. Here, we investigate the delivery of a powerful anionophore to artificial and cell membranes using a coiled-coil-based delivery system inspired by SNARE membrane fusion proteins. Incorporation of complementary lipopeptides into the lipid membranes of liposomes and cell-sized giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) facilitated the delivery of a powerful anionophore into GUVs, where its anion transport activity was monitored in real time by fluorescence microscopy. Similar results were achieved using live cells engineered to express a halide-sensitive fluorophore. We conclude that coiled-coil driven membrane fusion is a highly efficient system to deliver anionophores to target cell membranes.

Abstract
The σ-hole and π-hole are the regions with positive surface electrostatic potential on the molecule entity; the former specifically refers to the positive region of a molecular entity along extension of the Y-Ge/P/Se/X covalent σ-bond (Y = electron-rich group; Ge/P/Se/X = Groups IV-VII), while the latter refers to the positive region in the direction perpendicular to the σ-framework of the molecular entity. The directional noncovalent interactions between the σ-hole or π-hole and the negative or electron-rich sites are named σ-hole bond or π-hole bond, respectively. The contributions from electrostatic, charge transfer, and other terms or Coulombic interaction to the σ-hole bond and π-hole bond were reviewed first followed by a brief discussion on the interplay between the σ-hole bond and the π-hole bond as well as application of the two types of noncovalent interactions in the field of anion recognition. It is expected that this review could stimulate further development of the σ-hole bond and π-hole bond in theoretical exploration and practical application in the future.

Abstract
Anion transport by synthetic carriers (anionophores) holds promise for medical applications, especially the treatment of cystic fibrosis. Among the factors which determine carrier activity, the size and disposition of alkyl groups is proving remarkably important. Herein we describe a series of dithioureidodecalin anionophores, in which alkyl substituents on one face are varied from C0 to C10 in two-carbon steps. Activities increase then decrease as the chain length grows, peaking quite sharply at C6 . Molecular dynamics simulations showed the transporter chloride complexes releasing chloride as they approach the membrane-aqueous interface. The free transporter then stays at the interface, adopting an orientation that depends on the alkyl substituent. If chloride release is prevented, the complex is positioned similarly. Longer chains tilt the binding site away from the interface, potentially freeing the transporter or complex to move through the membrane. However, chains which are too long can also slow transport by inhibiting movement, and especially reorientation, within the phospholipid bilayer.

Abstract
Three fluorescent asymmetric bis-urea receptors (L1-L3) have been synthesised. The binding properties of L1-L3 towards different anions (fluoride, acetate, hydrogencarbonate, dihydrogen phosphate, and hydrogen pyrophosphate HPpi(3-)) have been studied by means of (1)H-NMR, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and theoretical calculations. In particular, a remarkable affinity for HPpi(3-) has been observed in the case L1 (DMSO-d6/0.5% H2O) which also acts as a fluorimetric chemosensor for this anion. Interestingly, when L1 is included in cetyltrimethylammonium (CTAB) micelles, hydrogen pyrophosphate recognition can also be achieved in pure water.

A dicationic halogen bonding rotaxane displays enhanced binding and selectivity for bromide over other halides and nitrate and dihydrogen phosphate oxoanions in contrast to an all hydrogen bonding counterpart which is attributed to chelated charge assisted halogen bonding interactions.

Abstract
The study of hydrogen bonding organocatalysis is rapidly expanding. Much research has been directed at making catalysts more active and selective, with less attention on fundamental design strategies. This study systematically increases steric hindrance at the active site of pH switchable urea organocatalysts. Incorporating strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds from protonated pyridines to oxygen stabilizes the active conformation of these ureas thus reducing the entropic penalty that results from substrate binding. The effect of increasing steric hindrance was studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and by kinetics experiments of a benchmark reaction.
