Factors Affecting Hydrogen Adsorption in Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Short Review

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have significant potential for hydrogen storage. The main benefit of MOFs is their reversible and high-rate hydrogen adsorption process, whereas their biggest disadvantage is related to their operation at very low temperatures. In this study, we describe selected examples of MOF structures studied for hydrogen adsorption and different factors affecting hydrogen adsorption in MOFs. Approaches to improving hydrogen uptake are reviewed, including surface area and pore volume, in addition to the value of isosteric enthalpy of hydrogen adsorption. Nanoconfinement of metal hydrides inside MOFs is proposed as a new approach to hydrogen storage. Conclusions regarding MOFs with incorporated metal nanoparticles, which may be used as nanoscaffolds and/or H₂ sorbents, are summarized as prospects for the near future.

Realization of Ethylene Production from Its Quaternary Mixture through Metal-Organic Framework Materials

Ethylene production from oxidative coupling of methane is a sustainable and economically attractive alternative to that through traditional hydrocarbon cracking technology. However, efficient ethylene separation from the complex reaction mixture is a daunting challenge that hinders the practical adoption of this technology. Herein, we report the efficient adsorptive separation of the CH₄/CO₂/C₂H₄/C₂H₆ mixture using three representative metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (UTSA-74, MOF-74, and HKUST-1) with diverse open metal sites. The efficient separation relies on tuning the selectivity through the convergence of characteristics including Lewis acidity of open metal sites, pore space, and cooperative binding behavior. The separation performance of these materials has been evaluated through single-component gas adsorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments. HKUST-1 provides the highest separation potential (4.1 mmol/g) thanks to its simultaneously high ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity and ethylene adsorption capacity, representing a benchmark material for such a challenging quaternary separation.

Control of hydrogen release during borohydride electrooxidation with porous carbon materials

Due to their highly tunable electrical and structural properties, carbon materials are widely used in fuel cells. This study reviews the latest modifications carried out in order to improve the electrochemical properties of carbon-based anodes in Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell (DBFC). However, in this type of fuel cell, various types of carbon (e.g. carbon black, activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene and heteroatom-doped carbons and MOF-derived carbon materials) can provide not only catalyst support, but also hydrogen storage due to the extremely complex process of borohydride electrooxidation. Accurate control of porosity and carbon morphology is therefore necessary for high fuel cell efficiency. Finally, some prospects for the future development of carbon materials for DBFC design are presented. It should be emphasized, that the storage of hydrogen in solid form is a possible breakthrough for the future use of hydrogen as an ecological fuel, which is why scientific research in this topic is so important.

Tuning the Structural Flexibility for Multi-Responsive Gas Sorption in Isonicotinate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of high interest as smart programmable materials for gas sorption due to their unique structural changes triggered by external stimuli. Owing to this property, which leads to opportunities such as maximizing deliverable gas capacity, flexible MOFs sometimes offer more advantages in sorption applications compared to their more rigid counterparts. Herein, we elucidate the effect of transition metal identity of a series of isonicotinate-based flexible MOFs, M(4-PyC)₂ [M═Mg, Mn, and Cu; 4-PyC = 4-pyridine carboxylic acid] on the structural dynamic response to different gases (C₂H₄, C₂H₆, Xe, Kr, and SO₂). Isotherms at different temperatures show that C₂H₄, C₂H₆, and Xe can form sufficiently strong interactions with both Mg(4-PyC)₂ and Mn(4-PyC)₂ frameworks resulting in gate-opening behavior due to the rotation of the linker's pyridine ring, while Kr cannot induce this phenomenon for the two MOFs under the measured conditions. In contrast, the gate-opening behavior occurs for Cu(4-PyC)₂ solely in the presence of C₂H₄, and no other measured gas, due to the open metal sites of Cu centers. In comparison, SO₂, a strong polar molecule, triggers the gate-opening effect in all three MOFs. Interestingly, a shape memory effect is observed for Cu(4-PyC)₂ during the second SO₂ sorption cycle. When comparing the different gate-opening pressures of each gas, we observed that the structural flexibility of the three frameworks is highly sensitive to the chemical hardness of the Lewis acidic metal ions (Mg²⁺ > Mn²⁺ > Cu²⁺). As a result, the gate opening behavior is observed at lower pressures for the MOFs containing weaker M-N bonds (harder metal ions), with the exception of Cu(4-PyC)₂ toward C₂H₄. These observations reveal that different transition metals can be used to finely control the structural flexibility of the frameworks.

Recent advances in process engineering and upcoming applications of metal-organic frameworks

Progress in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has advanced from fundamental chemistry to engineering processes and applications, resulting in new industrial opportunities. The unique features of MOFs, such as their permanent porosity, high surface area, and structural flexibility, continue to draw industrial interest outside the traditional MOF field, both to solve existing challenges and to create new businesses. In this context, diverse research has been directed toward commercializing MOFs, but such studies have been performed according to a variety of individual goals. Therefore, there have been limited opportunities to share the challenges, goals, and findings with most of the MOF field. In this review, we examine the issues and demands for MOF commercialization and investigate recent advances in MOF process engineering and applications. Specifically, we discuss the criteria for MOF commercialization from the views of stability, producibility, regulations, and production cost. This review covers progress in the mass production and formation of MOFs along with future applications that are not currently well known but have high potential for new areas of MOF commercialization.

We provide a brief overview of the state of the MOF field from their inception to their synthesis, potential applications, and finally, to their commercialization.

Structural Diversity of Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks and Effect on Adsorption of Toxic Chemicals

While linkers with various conformations pose challenges in the design and prediction of metal-organic framework (MOF) structures, they ultimately provide great opportunities for the discovery of novel structures thereby enriching structural diversity. Tetratopic carboxylate linkers, for example, have been widely used in the formation of Zr-based MOFs due to the ability to target diverse topologies, providing a promising platform to explore their mechanisms of formation. However, it remains a challenge to control the resulting structures when considering the complex assembly of linkers with unpredicted conformations and diverse Zr₆ node connectivities. Herein, we systematically explore how solvents and modulators employed during synthesis influence the resulting topologies of Zr-MOFs, choosing H₄TCPB-Br₂ (1,4-dibromo-2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene) as a representative tetratopic carboxylate linker. By modulating the reaction conditions, the conformations of the linker and the connectivities of the Zr₆ node can be simultaneously tuned, resulting in four types of structures: a new topology (NU-500), she (NU-600), scu (NU-906), and csq (NU-1008). Importantly, we have synthesized the first 5-connected Zr₆ node to date with the (4,4,4,5)-connected framework, NU-500. We subsequently performed detailed structural analyses to uncover the relationship between the structures and topologies of these MOFs and demonstrated the crucial role that the flexible linker played to access varied structures by different degrees of linker deformation. Due to a variety of pore structures ranging from micropores to hierarchical micropores and mesopores, the resulting MOFs show drastically different behaviors for the adsorption of n-hexane and dynamic adsorption of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) under dry and humid conditions.

Nanopore-Supported Metal Nanocatalysts for Efficient Hydrogen Generation from Liquid-Phase Chemical Hydrogen Storage Materials

Hydrogen has emerged as an environmentally attractive fuel and a promising energy carrier for future applications to meet the ever-increasing energy challenges. The safe and efficient storage and release of hydrogen remain a bottleneck for realizing the upcoming hydrogen economy. Hydrogen storage based on liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage materials is one of the most promising hydrogen storage techniques, which offers considerable potential for large-scale practical applications for its excellent safety, great convenience, and high efficiency. Recently, nanopore-supported metal nanocatalysts have stood out remarkably in boosting the field of liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage. Herein, the latest research progress in catalytic hydrogen production is summarized, from liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage materials, such as formic acid, ammonia borane, hydrous hydrazine, and sodium borohydride, by using metal nanocatalysts confined within diverse nanoporous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks, porous carbons, zeolites, mesoporous silica, and porous organic polymers. The state-of-the-art synthetic strategies and advanced characterizations for these nanocatalysts, as well as their catalytic performances in hydrogen generation, are presented. The limitation of each hydrogen storage system and future challenges and opportunities on this subject are also discussed. References in related fields are provided, and more developments and applications to achieve hydrogen energy will be inspired.

Doubly Interpenetrated Metal-Organic Framework of pcu Topology for Selective Separation of Propylene from Propane

Adsorptive separation is an appealing alternative technology to reduce the high energy and capital cost of the distillation separation of propylene/propane; however, it is very challenging to realize. A new flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) material [Zn₂(BDC-Cl)₂(Py₂TTz)] with a doubly interpenetrated pillared paddle wheel structure of pcu (primitive cubic) topology has been realized for this difficult separation for the first time. Through a judicious choice of linkers, the framework has small pore apertures that lead to much more propylene adsorption than propane. The selective adsorption relies on the sieving effect of the flexible framework. The column breakthrough experiment further demonstrated that efficient separation can be achieved under dynamic conditions.

Metal Organic Framework-Polyethersulfone Composite Membrane for Iodine Capture

A variety of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized and evaluated for their iodine adsorption capacity. Out of the MOFs tested, ZIF-8 showed the most promising result with an iodine vapor uptake of 876.6 mg/g. ZIF-8 was then incorporated into a polymer, polyethersulfone (PES), at different proportions to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which were then used to perform further iodine adsorption experiments. With a mixing ratio of 40 wt % of ZIF-8, the iodine adsorption capacity reached 1387.6 mg/g, wherein an astounding 60% improvement in adsorption was seen with the MMMs prepared compared to the original ZIF-8 powder.

3D Cage COFs: A Dynamic Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework with High-Connectivity Organic Cage Nodes

Three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are rare because there is a limited choice of organic building blocks that offer multiple reactive sites in a polyhedral geometry. Here, we synthesized an organic cage molecule (Cage-6-NH₂) that was used as a triangular prism node to yield the first cage-based 3D COF, 3D-CageCOF-1. This COF adopts an unreported 2-fold interpenetrated acs topology and exhibits reversible dynamic behavior, switching between a small-pore (sp) structure and a large-pore (lp) structure. It also shows high CO₂ uptake and captures water at low humidity (<40%). This demonstrates the potential for expanding the structural complexity of 3D COFs by using organic cages as the building units.

Designing Magnetic NanoMOFs for Biomedicine: Current Trends and Applications

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown a great potential in biomedicine due to their promising applications in different fields, including drug delivery, thermometry, theranostics etc. In this context, the development of magnetic sub-micrometric or nanometric MOFs through miniaturization approaches of magnetic MOFs up to the nanoscale still represents a crucial step to fabricate biomedical probes, especially in the field of theranostic nanomedicine. Miniaturization processes have to be properly designed to tailor the size and shape of particles and to retain magnetic properties and high porosity in the same material, fundamental prerequisites to develop smart nanocarriers integrating simultaneously therapeutic and contrast agents for targeted chemotherapy or other specific clinical use. An overview of current trends on the design of magnetic nanoMOFs in the field of biomedicine, with particular emphasis on theranostics and bioimaging, is herein envisioned.
