Abstract
Unsaturated lactams with endo- or exocyclic C-C double bonds constitute a set of reactive inputs that serve as the electron-rich olefin component in Povarov reactions. These substrates afford the multicomponent adducts in convenient yields and offer a wide range of structural diversity. Postcondensation transformations allow direct access to a variety of lactam-fused and amide-substituted quinoline derivatives.

Abstract
In a variation of the classical Ugi reaction, an acid promoted reaction between imines and isocyanides forms both 3-aminoindoles and substituted indoxyls. A recently reported triflyl phosphoramide is shown to be critical to obtain high yields under mild conditions.

Abstract
The purpose of diversity-oriented synthesis is to drive the discovery of small molecules with previously unknown biological functions. Natural products necessarily populate biologically relevant chemical space, since they bind both their biosynthetic enzymes and their target macromolecules. Natural product families are, therefore, libraries of pre-validated, functionally diverse structures in which individual compounds selectively modulate unrelated macromolecular targets. This review describes examples of diversity-oriented syntheses which have, to some extent, been inspired by the structures of natural products. Particular emphasis is placed on innovations that allow the synthesis of compound libraries that, like natural products, are skeletally diverse. Mimicking the broad structural features of natural products may allow the discovery of compounds that modulate the functions of macromolecules for which ligands are not known. The ability of innovations in diversity-oriented synthesis to deliver such compounds is critically assessed.

Abstract
The synthesis of dendritic dipeptides (4-3,4-3,5)12G2-CH2-Boc-L-Tyr-X-OMe where X = Gly, L-Val, L-Leu, L-Ile, L-Phe, and L-Pro is reported. Their self-assembly in bulk and in solution and the structural and retrostructural analysis of their periodic assemblies were compared to those of the previously reported and currently reinvestigated dendritic dipeptides with X = L-Ala. All dendritic dipeptides containing as X nonpolar alpha-amino acids self-assemble into helical porous columns. The substituent of X programs the structure of the helical pore and the resulting periodic array, in spite of the fact that its molar mass represents only between 0.05 and 4.77% from the molar mass of the dendritic dipeptide. In addition to the various 2-D columnar lattices, the dendritic dipeptides based on L-Ala, L-Leu, and L-Phe self-organize into 3-D hexagonal columnar crystals while those based on L-Val and L-Ile into an unknown columnar crystal. The principles via which the aliphatic and aromatic substituents of X program the structure of the helical pores indicate synthetic pathways to helical pores with bioinspired functions based on artificial nonpolar alpha-amino acids.

Abstract
The reaction between aromatic imines and methacrolein dimethylhydrazone in the presence of 10% indium trichloride affords in good to excellent yields biologically and synthetically relevant 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines bearing a hydrazone function at C-4 in a one-pot process that involves the formation of two C-C bonds and the stereoselective generation of two stereocenters, one of them quaternary, and this constitutes the first example of an alpha,beta-unsaturated dimethylhydrazone behaving as a dienophile in a hetero Diels-Alder reaction and the first vinylogous aza-Povarov reaction.

Abstract
Titanocene(II)-promoted cross coupling of alkynyl- and (Z)-alkenyl sulfones affords alpha-(phenylsulfonyl)alkenyltitanium species. Further treatment of these species with the titanocene(II) reagent generates titanium vinylvinylidene complexes, which react with carbonyl compounds in one pot to produce substituted vinylallenes with complete stereoselectivity. By using alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, 1,3,4,6-tetraenes are also obtained stereoselectively.

Abstract
Complementary diaminopyridine (DAP) and flavin derivatives self-assemble into discrete helically stacked tetrads in hydrocarbon solvents. The self-assembled structure was demonstrated through induced circular dichroism using DAPs with chiral side-chains and flavin with achiral side-chains. Flavin derivatives with chiral side-chains were synthesized; cooperativity in the self-assembly was established through circular dichroism (CD) profiles and melting curves. It was found that placing stereocenters in both recognition units resulted in a strong bisignated profile and enhancement of complex stability, indicative of cooperative self-assembly.

Abstract
The synthesis of dendritic dipeptides (4-3,4-3,5-4)12G2-CH(2)-Boc-L-Tyr-L-Ala-OMe and (4-3, 4-3,5-4)12G2-CH(2)-Boc-D-Tyr-D-Ala-OMe is described. These dendritic dipeptides self-assemble into porous elliptical and circular columns that in turn self-organize into centered rectangular columnar and hexagonal columnar periodic arrays. The transition from porous elliptical to porous circular columns is mediated in a reversible or irreversible way by the thermal history of the sample. A method to determine the dimensions of hollow elliptical and circular columns by the reconstruction of the small-angle powder X-ray diffractograms of the centered rectangular or hexagonal columnar lattices was elaborated. This technique together with wide-angle X-ray experiments performed on aligned fibers provided access to the structural and retrostructural analysis of elliptical supramolecular pores. This procedure is general and can be adapted for the determination of the dimensions of pores of any columnar shape.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of methyl esters of 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic, 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)propionic, 3-(3,5-dihydroxyphenyl)propionic, and 3-(3,4,5-trihydroxyphenyl)propionic acids and their use in a convergent iterative strategy to prepare up to four generations of three libraries, one of 3,4,5- and two of constitutional isomeric 3,4- and 3,5-substituted 3-phenylpropyl dendrons. Each library contains 3-[3,4,5-tris(dodecyl-1-oxy)phenyl]propyl-, 3-[3,4-bis(dodecyl-1-oxy)phenyl]propyl-, 3-{3,4-bis[3-(4-dodecyl-1-oxyphenyl)propyl-1-oxy]phenyl}propyl-, and 3-{3,4,5-tris[3-(4-dodecyl-1-oxyphenyl)propyl-1-oxy]phenyl}propyl ether first-generation dendrons on their periphery and -CO2CH3, -COOH, and -CH2OH groups at their apex. Regardless of their generation number and their periphery, internal, and apex structures, these dendrons self-assemble into supramolecular dendrimers that self-organize into all periodic and quasi-periodic assemblies encountered previously and in several unencountered with architecturally related benzyl ether-based supramolecular dendrimers. A variety of porous columnar lattices that were previously obtained only from dendritic dipeptides and hollow supramolecular spheres were also discovered from these building blocks. The more flexible and less compact 3-phenylpropyl ether repeat units are stable under acidic conditions, facilitate a simpler synthetic strategy, provide faster dynamics of self-assembly into higher-order supramolecular structures of larger dimensions, exhibit lower transition temperatures than the corresponding benzyl ether homologues, and demonstrate the generality of the self-assembly concept based on amphiphilic dendrons.

Abstract
The synthesis of dendritic dipeptides (4-3,4-3,5)12G2-CH2-X-L-Tyr-L-Ala-OMe with X = Boc, Moc, and Ac; their self-assembly in bulk and in solution; and the structural and retrostructural analysis of their supramolecular helical porous assemblies are reported. The dimensions, structure, internal order, thermal stability of the supramolecular helical pores, and conformations of the dendron and supramolecular dendrimer are programmed by the nature of the protective groups of the dipeptide. The ability of the protective groups to program the structure of the helical pore reveals the simplest design strategy that complements the more complex strategies based on the architecture of the dendron, the stereochemistry, and the structure of the dipeptide.
