Abstract
The coordinatively unsaturated gold(iii) chelate complex [(C^N-CH)Au(C6F5)]+ (1 +) reacts with main group hydrides H-BPin and H-SiEt3 in dichloromethane solution at -70 °C to form the corresponding σ-complexes, which were spectroscopically characterized (C^N-CH = 2-(C6H3Bu t )-6-(C6H4Bu t )pyridine anion; Pin = OCMe2CMe2O). In the presence of an external base such as diethyl ether, heterolytic cleavage of the silane H-Si bond leads to the gold hydrides [{(C^N-CH)AuC6F5}2(μ-H)]+ (2 +) and (C^N-CH)AuH(C6F5) (5), together with spectroscopically detected [Et3Si-OEt2]+. The activation of dihydrogen also involves heterolytic H-H bond cleavage but requires a higher temperature (-20 °C). H2 activation proceeds in two mechanistically distinct steps: the first leading to 2 plus [H(OEt2)2]+, the second to protonation of one of the C^N pyridine ligands and reductive elimination of C6F5H. By comparison, formation of gold hydrides by cleavage of suitably activated C-H bonds is very much more facile; e.g. the reaction of 1·OEt2 with Hantzsch ester is essentially instantaneous and quantitative at -30 °C. This is the first experimental observation of species involved in the initial steps of gold catalyzed hydroboration, hydrosilylation and hydrogenation and the first demonstration of the ability of organic C-H bonds to act as hydride donors towards gold.

Abstract
A quantitative assessment of the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson components of the Au(III)-alkyne bond in a series of cationic and dicationic bis- and monocyclometalated gold(III) complexes with 2-butyne via charge-displacement (CD) analysis is reported. Bonding between Au(III) and 2-butyne invariably shows a dominant σ donation component, a smaller, but significant, π back-donation, and a remarkable polarization of the alkyne CC triple bond toward the metal fragment. A very large net electron charge transfer from CC triple bond to the metal fragment results, which turns out to be unexpectedly insensitive to the charge of the complex and more strictly related to the nature of the ancillary ligand. The combination of σ donation, π back-donation, and polarization effects is in fact modulated by the different ligand frameworks, with ligands bearing atoms different from carbon in trans position with respect to the alkyne emerging as especially interesting for both imparting Au(III)-alkyne bond stability and inducing a more effective alkyne activation. A first attempt to figure out a rationale on the bonding/reactivity relationship for Au(III)-alkyne is made by performing a comparative study in a model nucleophilic attack of water to the alkyne triple bond. Smaller π back-donation facilitates alkyne slippage in the transition states, which is energetically less demanding for Au(III) than for Au(I), and suggests a greater propensity of Au(III) to facilitate the nucleophilic attack.

Abstract
Reported herein is the first example of a gold-catalyzed cyclization of bis(arylmethyl)ethynylphosphine oxides. This represents an original approach to bridgehead methanophosphocines 1, eight-membered heterocycles. Gold catalyst in combination with triflic acid activates alkyne and induces a double hydroarylation. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds stepwise, forming first the 1 H-isophosphinoline 2-oxide 5. Reduction and protection of the corresponding phosphine oxides 1 described herein also highlight the effectiveness of our approach to this new class of electron-rich ligands.

Abstract
The reaction of [C^C)Au(OEt2 )2 ]+ with 1,5-cyclooctadiene or norbornadiene affords the corresponding olefin complexes [(C^C)Au(COD)]SbF6 and [(C^C)Au(NBD)]SbF6 , which are thermally stable in solution and the solid state (C^C=4,4'-di-tert-butylbiphenyl-2,2'-diyl). The crystal structures of these complexes have been determined. By contrast, dienones such as dibenzylideneacetone are O- rather than C=C-bonded. The reactions of (C^C)Au(OAcF )(L) (L=PMe3 or CNxyl) with B(C6 F5 )3 in the presence of bis(1-adamantyl)acetylene give the mixed-ligand alkyne complexes [(C^C)Au(AdC≡CAd)(L)]+ , the first complexes of their type in gold chemistry. In the presence of an excess of acetylene these compounds are thermally stable in solution and as solids. The bonding of n- and π-donor ligands to AuIII fragments and the effect of the trans influence exerted by N- and C-donors was explored with the aid of DFT calculations. Results show that the Au-L bond enthalpies trans to anionic C are 35-60 % of the enthalpies trans to N, with strong π-acceptors being particularly affected. In comparison with [Me2 Au]+ , the [(C^C)Au]+ fragment is more polar and in bond enthalpy terms resembles Me2 Pt.

Abstract
Stereoselective thioallylation of alkynes under possible gold redox catalysis was accomplished with high efficiency (as low as 0.1 % catalyst loading, up to 99 % yield) and broad substrate scope (various alkynes, inter- and intramolecular fashion). The gold(I) catalyst acts as both a π-acid for alkyne activation and a redox catalyst for AuI/III coupling, whereas the sulfonium cation generated in situ functions as a mild oxidant. This novel methodology provides an exciting system for gold redox catalysis without the need for a strong oxidant.

Abstract
Metal species with different size (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) show different catalytic behavior for various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. It has been shown in the literature that many factors including the particle size, shape, chemical composition, metal-support interaction, and metal-reactant/solvent interaction can have significant influences on the catalytic properties of metal catalysts. The recent developments of well-controlled synthesis methodologies and advanced characterization tools allow one to correlate the relationships at the molecular level. In this Review, the electronic and geometric structures of single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles will be discussed. Furthermore, we will summarize the catalytic applications of single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles for different types of reactions, including CO oxidation, selective oxidation, selective hydrogenation, organic reactions, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic reactions. We will compare the results obtained from different systems and try to give a picture on how different types of metal species work in different reactions and give perspectives on the future directions toward better understanding of the catalytic behavior of different metal entities (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) in a unifying manner.

Abstract
Silver and gold have become incredibly versatile and mild catalysts for numerous transformations, especially in heterocycle synthesis. For the most prominent of them, i.e. furans, silver and gold, with their unique reactivity and mildness, allow numerous possible routes to highly substituted and/or functionalized furans from a large variety of starting materials. Silver and gold catalysis provide thus the most flexible way to this important family of compounds. The present review describes these silver and gold-catalyzed routes, with some emphasis on mechanistic aspects, and proposes a comparison of both the silver and the gold-catalyzed syntheses of furans.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of hitherto hypothetical AuIII π-alkyne complexes is reported. Bonding and stability depend strongly on the trans effect and steric factors. Bonding characteristics shed light on the reasons for the very different stabilities between the classical alkyne complexes of PtII and their drastically more reactive AuIII congeners. Lack of back-bonding facilitates alkyne slippage, which is energetically less costly for gold than for platinum and explains the propensity of gold to facilitate C-C bond formation. Cycloaddition followed by aryl migration and reductive deprotonation is presented as a new reaction sequence in gold chemistry.

Abstract
2-Pyrones and 4-pyrones are common structural motifs in bioactive natural products. However, traditional methods for their synthesis, which try to emulate the biosynthetic pathway of cyclization of a 1,3,5-tricarbonyl precursor, are often harsh and, therefore, not particularly suitable for applications to polyfunctionalized and/or sensitive target compounds. π-Acid catalysis, in contrast, has proved to be better for a systematic exploration of the pyrone estate. To this end, alkynes are used as stable ketone surrogates, which can be activated under exceedingly mild conditions due to the pronounced carbophilicity of [LAu]+ fragments (L=two electron donor ligand); attack of a tethered ester carbonyl group onto the transient alkyne-gold complex then forges the pyrone ring in a fully regiocontrolled manner.

Abstract
A compound that isomerizes into distinct products depending on the particular Lewis acid or Brønsted acid catalyst used is disclosed. One product can only be obtained with the softest π-acids, such as Au, Pt, Ga, or In complexes. Another is formed only with harder π-acids incorporating Ag or Cu salts. The formation of the third category requires even harder π-acids or protons. This simple benchmark reaction allows for prediction of the category of transformations that can be catalyzed by a new complex. It also informs whether protons have been unintentionally generated in the reaction mixture.

Abstract
Mononuclear gold(II) complexes are very rare labile species. Transient gold(II) species have been suggested in homogeneous catalysis and in medical applications, but their geometric and electronic structures have remained essentially unexplored: even fundamental data, such as the ionic radius of gold(II), are unknown. Now, an unprecedentedly stable neutral gold(II) complex of a porphyrin derivative has been isolated, and its structural and spectroscopic features determined. The gold atom adopts a 2+2 coordination mode in between those of gold(III) (four-coordinate square planar) and gold(I) (two-coordinate linear), owing to a second-order Jahn-Teller distortion enabled by the relativistically lowered 6s orbital of gold. The reactivity of this gold(II) complex towards dioxygen, nitrosobenzene and acids is discussed. This study provides insight on the ionic radius of gold(II), and allows it to be placed within the homologous series of nd9 Cu/Ag/Au divalent ions and the 5d8/9/10 Pt/Au/Hg 'relativistic' triad in the periodic table.

Abstract
A series of gold(I) and gold(III) complexes containing bulky bis-N,N'-(9-alkylfluorenyl) heterocyclic carbene (R F-NHC) ligands have been prepared in high yields from appropriate imidazolinium, imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts. In all complexes, the carbene ligand provides high steric protection of the Au-X bond trans to the carbenic C atom. Irrespective of the metal oxidation state, the complexes showed high efficiency in a tandem 3,3-rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of an enynyl acetate. One of the AuIII complexes, [AuCl3 (R F-NHC)], was further found to be suitable for the efficient cyclisation of a propargylcarboxamide. Furthermore, unlike related NHC-gold(I) complexes based on conventional bulky N-heterocyclic carbenes (notably, 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), 1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) and 1,3-(bis-tert-butyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (ItBu)), the studied [AuI Cl(R F-NHC)] complexes catalysed the conversion of a 1,6-enyne in the presence of indole into a single product; this arises from the embracing character of the ligand, which prevents indole addition on one of the catalytic intermediates. A structure/selectivity relationship was established for all carbenes tested that took into account percent buried volumes and topographic steric maps. The results illustrate the high potential of confining NHCs in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The gold(III) methoxide complex (C∧N∧C)AuOMe (1) reacts with tris(p-tolyl)phosphine in benzene at room temperature under O abstraction to give the methylgold product (C∧N∧C)AuMe (2) together with O=P(p-tol)3 ((C∧N∧C) = [2,6-(C6H3t Bu-4)2pyridine]2-). Calculations show that this reaction is energetically favorable (ΔG = -32.3 kcal mol-1). The side products in this reaction, the Au(II) complex [Au(C∧N∧C)]2 (3) and the phosphorane (p-tol)3P(OMe)2, suggest that at least two reaction pathways may operate, including one involving (C∧N∧C)Au• radicals. Attempts to model the reaction by DFT methods showed that PPh3 can approach 1 to give a near-linear Au-O-P arrangement, without phosphine coordination to gold. The analogous reaction of (C∧N∧C)AuOEt, on the other hand, gives exclusively a mixture of 3 and (p-tol)3P(OEt)2. Whereas the reaction of (C∧N∧C)AuOR (R = But, p-C6H4F) with P(p-tol)3 proceeds over a period of hours, compounds with R = CH2CF3, CH(CF3)2 react almost instantaneously, to give 3 and O=P(p-tol)3. In chlorinated solvents, treatment of the alkoxides (C∧N∧C)AuOR with phosphines generates [(C∧N∧C)Au(PR3)]Cl, via Cl abstraction from the solvent. Attempts to extend the synthesis of gold(III) alkoxides to allyl alcohols were unsuccessful; the reaction of (C∧N∧C)AuOH with an excess of CH2=CHCH2OH in toluene led instead to allyl alcohol isomerization to give a mixture of gold alkyls, (C∧N∧C)AuR' (R' = -CH2CH2CHO (10), -CH2CH(CH2OH)OCH2CH=CH2 (11)), while 2-methallyl alcohol affords R' = CH2CH(Me)CHO (12). The crystal structure of 11 was determined. The formation of Au-C instead of the expected Au-O products is in line with the trend in metal-ligand bond dissociation energies for Au(III): M-H > M-C > M-O.

Abstract
Two new cationic dinuclear gold(I) complexes, [Au2 {μ(P,N)-5}2 ]X2 -in which X=NTf2 (7; Tf=trifluoromethanesulfonate) or SbF6 (8) and 2-(diphenylphosphanyl)benzonitrile (5) is a P,N-bridging donor-have been synthesized and structurally characterized. These air-stable species and their dimeric and polymeric analogues possessing 1'-(diphenylphosphanyl)-1-cyanoferrocene (1) as the bridging ligand, [Au2 {μ(P,N)-1}2 ](NTf2 )2 and [Au{μ(P,N)-1}]n [SbF6 ]n , were used as precatalysts in various Au-mediated C-C and C-O bond-forming reactions. The reactivity of these complexes revealed the hemilabile nature of their P,N ligands. In the series of tested precatalysts, complex 8 exerted particularly high catalytic activity at low Au loading, even in reactions that usually require high amounts of gold catalyst to proceed efficiently under standard reaction conditions.

Abstract
Unprecedented stable BINOL/gold(III) complexes, adopting a novel C,O-chelation mode, were synthesized by a modular approach through combination of 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diols (BINOLs) and cyclometalated gold(III) dichloride complexes [(C^N)AuCl2 ]. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the bidentate BINOL ligands tautomerized and bonded to the AuIII atom through C,O-chelation to form a five-membered ring instead of the conventional O,O'-chelation giving a seven-membered ring. These gold(III) complexes catalyzed acetalization/cycloisomerization and carboalkoxylation of ortho-alkynylbenzaldehydes with trialkyl orthoformates.

Abstract
DFT calculation results reveal that InCl3-catalyzed cycloisomerization of o-propargylbiphenyl proceeds via 6-exo cyclization followed by intermolecular chloride-assisted H-abstraction/proto-demetalation and intramolecular chloride-assisted H-abstraction/proto-demetalation to afford a phenanthrene skeleton.

Abstract
Controlled preparation of tri- and tetrasubstituted furans, as well as carbazoles has been achieved through chemo- and regioselective metal-catalyzed cyclization reactions of cumulenic alcohols. The gold- and palladium-catalyzed cycloisomerization reactions of cumulenols, including indole-tethered 2,3,4-trien-1-ols, to trisubstituted furans was effective, due to a 5-endo-dig oxycyclization by attack of the hydroxy group onto the central cumulene double bond. In contrast, palladium-catalyzed heterocyclization/coupling reactions with 3-bromoprop-1-enes furnished tetrasubstituted furans. Also studied was the palladium-catalyzed cyclization/coupling sequence involving protected indole-tethered 2,3,4-trien-1-ols and 3-bromoprop-1-enes that exclusively generated trisubstituted carbazole derivatives. These results could be explained through a selective 6-endo-dig cumulenic hydroarylation, followed by aromatization. DFT calculations were carried out to understand this difference in reactivity.

Abstract
AbstractThe regio- and stereoselective dearomatization of indoles is realized for the first time by combining readily available indolyl precursors and electron-rich allenes, namely allenamides and aryloxyallenes. Inter- as well as intramolecular condensations were realized under gold and Brønsted acid catalysis providing a range of densely functionalized indoline and indolenine cores in high yields and excellent stereochemical outcome. Chemodivergent reaction profiles (Micheal-type addition vs. [2+2]-cycloaddition) were realized by a tailored design of both reaction conditions and functionalization of the reaction partners.
