Metal Confinement through N-(9-Alkyl)fluorenyl-Substituted N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and Its Consequences in Gold-Catalysed Reactions Involving Enynes

A series of gold(I) and gold(III) complexes containing bulky bis-N,N'-(9-alkylfluorenyl) heterocyclic carbene (^R F-NHC) ligands have been prepared in high yields from appropriate imidazolinium, imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts. In all complexes, the carbene ligand provides high steric protection of the Au-X bond trans to the carbenic C atom. Irrespective of the metal oxidation state, the complexes showed high efficiency in a tandem 3,3-rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of an enynyl acetate. One of the Au^III complexes, [AuCl₃ (^R F-NHC)], was further found to be suitable for the efficient cyclisation of a propargylcarboxamide. Furthermore, unlike related NHC-gold(I) complexes based on conventional bulky N-heterocyclic carbenes (notably, 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), 1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) and 1,3-(bis-tert-butyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (ItBu)), the studied [Au^I Cl(^R F-NHC)] complexes catalysed the conversion of a 1,6-enyne in the presence of indole into a single product; this arises from the embracing character of the ligand, which prevents indole addition on one of the catalytic intermediates. A structure/selectivity relationship was established for all carbenes tested that took into account percent buried volumes and topographic steric maps. The results illustrate the high potential of confining NHCs in organic synthesis.

Synthesis and Chiroptical Properties of Hexa-, Octa-, and Deca-azaborahelicenes: Influence of Helicene Size and of the Number of Boron Atoms

Four members of a new class of cycloborylated hexa-, octa-, and deca-helicenes (1 a-d) have been prepared in enantiopure form, along with two cycloplatinated deca-helicenes (1 d', 1 d¹ ), further extending the family of cycloplatinated hexa- and octa-helicenes reported previously. The azabora[n]helicenes display intense electronic circular dichroism and large optical rotations; the dependence of the optical activity on the size of the helix (n=6, 8, 10) and the number of boron atoms (1 or 2) has been examined in detail both experimentally and theoretically. The photophysical properties (nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence) of these new fluorescent organic helicenes have been measured and compared with the corresponding organometallic phosphorescent cycloplatinated derivatives (1 a¹ -d¹ ).

Vibrational dynamics (IR, Raman, NRVS) and a DFT study of a new antitumor tetranuclearstannoxane cluster, Sn(iv)-oxo-{di-o-vanillin} dimethyl dichloride

The vibrational dynamics of a newly synthesized tetrastannoxane was characterized with a combination of experimental (Raman, IR and tin-based nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy) and computational (DFT/B3LYP) methods, with an emphasis on the vibrations of the tin sites. The cytotoxic activity revealed a significant regression selectively against the human pancreatic cell lines.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of photoexcited spin-state concentration waves

The spin crossover compound [FeIIH2L2-Me][PF6]2 presents a two-step phase transition. In the intermediate phase, a spin state concentration wave (SSCW) appears resulting from a symmetry breaking (cell doubling) associated with a long-range order of alternating high and low spin molecular states. By combining time-resolved optical and X-ray diffraction measurements on a single crystal, we study how such a system responds to femtosecond laser excitation and we follow in real time the erasing and rewriting of the SSCW.

Cracking cavitands: metal-directed scission of phosphinyl-substituted resorcinarenes

Resorcinarene-derived tetramethylene cavitands bearing a diphenylphosphino group grafted to their wider rim undergo facile, directed C-O bond breaking upon reaction with transition-metal ions in the presence of nucleophiles. One possible reaction mechanism involves formation of a P,O-chelate complex, which weakens the adjacent O-CH2 bond, leading to the formation of an oxacarbenium intermediate.

Straightforward synthesis of 5-bromopenta-2,4-diynenitrile and its reactivity towards terminal alkynes: a direct access to diene and benzofulvene scaffolds

The high-yielding synthesis of 5-bromopenta-2,4-diynenitrile (BrC5 N) was achieved for the first time. Its reactivity with triisopropylsilylacetylene and triisopropylsilylbutadiyne in the presence of copper and palladium as co-catalysts and diisopropylamine was evaluated. It revealed an unprecedented cascade reaction leading to a diene in one case and to a benzofulvene in the other case, with a unique structure. Both of them were characterized by X-ray crystallography, among other techniques. The mechanism of the reaction leading to the diene was investigated experimentally. Theoretical calculations at the DFT level suggest that the mechanism leading to the benzofulvene relies on a hexa-dehydro Diels-Alder (HDDA)-type of mechanism. This work constitutes an example of an unanticipated reactivity leading to an important increase of chemical complexity.

enantio-Enriched CPL-active helicene-bipyridine-rhenium complexes

The incorporation of a rhenium atom within an extended helical π-conjugated bi-pyridine system impacts the chiroptical and photophysical properties of the resulting neutral or cationic complexes, leading to the first examples of rhenium-based phosphors that exhibit circularly polarized luminescence.

Acid/base-triggered switching of circularly polarized luminescence and electronic circular dichroism in organic and organometallic helicenes

Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence acid/base switching activity has been demonstrated in helicene-bipyridine proligand 1 a and in its "rollover" cycloplatinated derivative 2 a. Whereas proligand 1 a displays a strong bathochromic shift (>160 nm) of the nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence upon protonation, complex 2 a displays slightly stronger emission. This strikingly different behavior between singlet emission in the organic helicene and triplet emission in the organometallic derivative has been rationalized by using quantum-chemical calculations. The very large bathochromic shift of the emission observed upon protonation of azahelicene-bipyridine 1 a has been attributed to the decrease in aromaticity (promoting a charge-transfer-type transition rather than a π-π* transition) as well as an increase in the HOMO-LUMO character of the transition and stabilization of the LUMO level upon protonation.

Phosphinocyclodextrins as confining units for catalytic metal centres. Applications to carbon-carbon bond forming reactions

The capacity of two cavity-shaped ligands, HUGPHOS-1 and HUGPHOS-2, to generate exclusively singly phosphorus-ligated complexes, in which the cyclodextrin cavity tightly wraps around the metal centre, was explored with a number of late transition metal cations. Both cyclodextrin-derived ligands were assessed in palladium-catalysed Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions between aryl bromides and styrene on one hand, and the rhodium-catalysed asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene on the other hand. The inability of both chiral ligands to form standard bis(phosphine) complexes under catalytic conditions was established by high-pressure NMR studies and shown to have a deep impact on the two carbon-carbon bond forming reactions both in terms of activity and selectivity. For example, when used as ligands in the rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation of styrene, they lead to both high isoselectivity and high enantioselectivity. In the study dealing with the Mizoroki-Heck reactions, comparative tests were carried out with WIDEPHOS, a diphosphine analogue of HUGPHOS-2.

Straightforward access to mono- and bis-cycloplatinated helicenes that display circularly polarized phosphorescence using crystallization resolution methods

Enantiopure mono-cycloplatinated-[8]helicene and bis-cycloplatinated-[6]helicene derivatives were prepared through column chromatography combined with crystallization of diastereomeric complexes using a chiral ancillary sulfoxide ligand. The UV-visible spectra, circular dichroism, molar rotations, and (circularly polarized) luminescence activity of these new helical complexes have been examined in detail and analysed with the help of first-principles quantum-chemical calculations.

Diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of organometallic bis(helicene)s by a combination of C-H activation and dynamic isomerization

Homochiral and heterochiral cis-bis-cycloplatinated-[6]helicene derivatives 1b(1,2), as representative examples of platina[6]helicenes that share a common platinum center, have been prepared. A diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis, which combines CH activation and dynamic isomerization from heterochiral structure 1b(2) into homochiral structure 1b(1), is also described. Overall, this isomerization process results in the transfer of chiral information from one helicene moiety to the other one. The chiroptical properties of homochiral (P)- and (M)-1b(1) were greatly modified upon oxidation into their corresponding (P)- and (M)-diiodo-Pt(IV) complexes (5). The changes were also analyzed by performing theoretical calculations. C-H activation in the synthesis of organometallic helicenes is further demonstrated by the preparation of cis-bis-cycloplatinated-[8]helicene 1c.
