Abstract
Recently, an increasing number of metal complex catalysts have been developed to achieve the activation or transformation of substrates based on cooperation between the metal atom and its ligands. In such “cooperative catalysis,” the ligand not only is bound to the metal, where it exerts steric and electronic effects, but also functionally varies its structure during the elementary processes of the catalytic reaction. In this review article, we focus on metal–ligand cooperation involving aromatization and dearomatization of the ligand, thus introducing the newest developments and examples of homogeneous catalytic reactions.

Abstract
The reductive coupling of alcohols using vanadium pyridonate catalysts is reported. This attractive approach for C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond formation uses an oxophilic, earth-abundant metal for a catalytic deoxygenation reaction. Several pyridonate complexes of vanadium were synthesized, giving insight into the coordination chemistry of this understudied class of compounds. Isolated intermediates provide experimental mechanistic evidence that complements reported computational mechanistic proposals for the reductive coupling of alcohols. In contrast to previous mononuclear vanadium(V)/vanadium(III)/vanadium(IV) cycles, this pyridonate catalyst system is proposed to proceed by a vanadium(III)/vanadium(IV) cycle involving bimetallic intermediates.

Abstract
Organochalcogen compounds have been used as the building blocks for the development of a variety of catalysts that have been studied comprehensively during the last two decades for several chemical transformations. Transfer hydrogenation (reduction of carbonyl compounds to alcohols) and oxidation of alcohols (conversion of alcohols to their respective ketones and aldehydes) are also among such chemical transformations. Some compilations are available in the literature on the development of catalysts, based on organochalcogen ligands, and their applications in Heck reaction, Suzuki reaction, and other related aspects. Some review articles have also been published on different aspects of oxidation of alcohols and transfer hydrogenation. However, no such article is available in the literature on the syntheses and use of organochalcogen ligated catalysts for these two reactions. In this perspective, a survey of developments pertaining to the synthetic aspects of such organochalcogen (S/Se/Te) based catalysts for the two reactions has been made. In addition to covering the syntheses of chalcogen ligands, their metal complexes and nanoparticles (NPs), emphasis has also been placed on the efficient conversion of different substrates during catalytic reactions, diversity in catalytic potential and mechanistic aspects of catalysis. It also includes the analysis of comparison (in terms of efficiency) between this unique class of catalysts and efficient catalysts without a chalcogen donor. The future scope of this area has also been highlighted.

Abstract
New iridium(III)-bipyridonate complexes having cyclopentadienyl ligands with a series of alkyl substituents were synthesized for the purpose of tuning the catalytic activity for acceptorless dehydrogenation reactions. A comparison of the catalytic activity was performed for the reaction of alcoholic substrates such as 1-phenylethanol, 2-octanol, and benzyl alcohol. The 1-t-butyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl iridium complex exhibited the best performance, which surpassed that of the 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) iridium catalyst in the dehydrogenation reaction of alcohols. The catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline was also examined. The highest efficiency was obtained in the reaction catalyzed by the same t-butyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl iridium complex.

Abstract
Alcohol oxidation reactions are widely used for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones. The electrolysis of alcohols to carbonyl compounds have been underutilized owing to low efficiency. Herein, we report an electrochemical oxidation of various alcohols in a continuous-flow reactor without external oxidants, base or mediators. The robust electrochemical oxidation is performed for a variety of alcohols with good functional group tolerance, high efficiency and atom economy, whereas mechanistic studies support the benzylic radical intermediate formation and hydrogen evolution. The electrochemical oxidation proves viable on diols with excellent levels of selectivity for the benzylic position.

Iridium-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Ketones and Aldehydes Using Glucose as a Sustainable Hydrogen Donor. Catalysts 2019. Abstract
A new catalytic system for transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds using glucose as a hydrogen donor was developed. Various ketones and aldehydes were efficiently converted to corresponding alcohols with two equivalents of glucose in the presence of a small amount (0.1 to 1.0 mol%) of iridium catalyst that had a functional ligand. In this catalytic system, transfer hydrogenation reactions proceeded based on the cooperativity of iridium and a functional ligand. It should be noted that environmentally benign water could have been used as a solvent in the present catalytic system for the reduction of various carbonyl substrates. Furthermore, the reaction scope could be extended by using N,N-dimethylacetamide as a reaction solvent.

Abstract
Abstract
Alcohols are a promising source for the sustainable production of hydrogen that may also serve as rechargeable liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). Metal-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols produces carbonyl derivatives as H2-depleted by-products, which by means of a hydrogenation reaction can be reconverted to the initial alcohols. Hence, reversible H2-storage systems based on pairs of secondary alcohols/ketones and primary alcohols/carboxylic acid derivatives may be envisaged. In this contribution, the hydrogenation of carbonyl derivatives, including ketones, esters, amides and carboxylic acids, is reviewed from the perspective of the hydrogen storage in alcohols.

Abstract
Cp*RhIII /IrIII complexes are known to play important roles in both C-H activation and transfer hydrogenation (TH). However, these two areas evolved separately. They have been integrated in redox- and chemodivergent coupling reactions of N-pyridylanilines with enones. The iridium-catalyzed coupling with enones leads to the efficient synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines through TH from i PrOH. Counterintuitively, i PrOH does not serve as the sole hydride source, and the major reaction pathway involves disproportionation of a dihydroquinoline intermediate, followed by the convergent and iterative reduction of quinolinium species.

Abstract
By the introduction of -OH group(s) into different position(s) of 6-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, several NNN-type ligands were synthesized and then introduced to ruthenium (Ru) centers by reactions with RuCl2(PPh3)3. In the presence of PPh3 or CO, these ruthenium complexes reacted with NH4PF6 in CH2Cl2 or CH3OH to give a series of ionic products 5-9. The reaction of Ru(L2)(PPh3)Cl2 (2) with CO generated a neutral complex [Ru(L2)(CO)Cl2] (10). In the presence of CH3ONa, 10 was further converted into complex [Ru(L2)(HOCH3)(CO)Cl] (11), in which there was a methanol molecule coordinating with ruthenium, as suggested by density functional theory calculations. The catalytic transfer hydrogenation activity of all of these new bifunctional metal-ligand complexes was tested. Dichloride complex 2 exhibits best activity, whereas carbonyl complexes 10 and 11 are efficient for selectively reducing 5-hexen-2-one, suggesting different hydrogenation mechanisms. The results reveal the dramatic influence for the reactivity and catalytic activity of the secondary coordination sphere in transition metal complexes.
