Digging the Sigma-Hole of Organoantimony Lewis Acids by Oxidation

Bioinspired Ether Cyclizations within a π-Basic Capsule Compared to Autocatalysis on π-Acidic Surfaces and Pnictogen-Bonding Catalysts

While the integration of supramolecular principles in catalysis attracts increasing attention, a direct comparative assessment of the resulting systems catalysts to work out distinct characteristics is often difficult. Herein is reported how the broad responsiveness of ether cyclizations to diverse inputs promises to fill this gap. Cyclizations in the confined, π-basic and Brønsted acidic interior of supramolecular capsules, for instance, are found to excel with speed (exceeding general Brønsted acid and hydrogen-bonding catalysts by far) and selective violations of the Baldwin rules (as extreme as the so far unique pnictogen-bonding catalysts). The complementary cyclization on π-acidic aromatic surfaces remains unique with regard to autocatalysis, which is shown to be chemo- and diastereoselective with regard to product-like co-catalysts but, so far, not enantioselective.

Anion Chelation via Double Chalcogen Bonding: The Case of a Bis-telluronium Dication and Its Application in Electrophilic Catalysis via Metal-Chloride Bond Activation

Telluronium cations have long been known to engage their counteranions via secondary interactions. Yet, this property has rarely been exploited for anion binding. Motivated by such an application, we have now synthesized a bis-telluronium dication ([3]²⁺) that was obtained as a tetrafluoroborate salt by reaction of 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene-4,5-diboronic acid with phenoxatellurine difluoride and BF₃·OEt₂. As confirmed by the formation of Te-(μ-BF₄)-Te bridges in the structure of [3][BF₄]₂, [3]²⁺ functions as a bidentate Lewis acid toward anions. [3][BF₄]₂ has also been converted into the more exposed [3][BArF₂₄]₂ ([BArF₂₄]^- = [B(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃)₄]^-). The latter, which readily ionizes Ph₃CCl, displays a chloride anion binding constant that exceeds that of a monofunctional model compound by almost 4 orders of magnitude. The unique properties of this new bis-telluronium dication are further highlighted by its ability to activate Ph₃PAuCl and cis-(Ph₃P)₂PtCl₂, leading to catalytic systems highly active in the cycloisomerization of propargylamide or enyne substrates.

Distiboranes based on ortho-phenylene backbones as bidentate Lewis acids for fluoride anion chelation

As part of our efforts in the chemistry of main group platforms that support anion sensing and transport, we are now reporting the synthesis of anitmony-based bidentate Lewis acids featuring the o-C6F4 backbone. These compounds can be easily accessed by reaction of the newly synthesized o-C6F4(SbPh2)2 (5) with o-chloranil or octafluorophenanthra-9,10-quinone, affording the corresponding distiboranes 6 and 7 of general formula o-C6F4(SbPh2(diolate))2 with diolate = tetrachlorocatecholate for 6 and octafluorophenanthrene-9,10-diolate for 7, respectively. While 6 is very poorly soluble, its octafluorophenanthrene-9,10-diolate analog 7 readily dissolves in CH2Cl2 and undergoes swift conversion into the corresponding fluoride chelate complex [7-μ2-F]- which has been isolated as a [nBu4N]+ salt. The o-C6H4 analog of 7, referred to as 8, has also been prepared. Although less Lewis acidic than 7, 8 also forms a very stable fluoride chelate complex ([8-μ2-F]-). Altogether, our experiental results, coupled with computational analyses and fluoride anion affinity calculations, show that 7 and 8 are some of the strongest antimony-based fluoride anion chelators prepared to date. Another notable aspect of this work concerns the use of the octafluorophenanthrene-9,10-diolate ligand and its ablity to impart advantageous solubility and Lewis acidity properties.

Asymmetric Pnictogen-Bonding Catalysis: Transfer Hydrogenation by a Chiral Antimony(V) Cation/Anion Pair

Pnictogen-bonding catalysis based on σ-hole interactions has recently attracted the attention of synthetic chemists. As a proof-of-concept for asymmetric pnictogen-bonding catalysis, we report herein an enantioselective transfer hydrogenation of benzoxazines catalyzed by a novel chiral antimony cation/anion pair. The chiral pnictogen catalyst library could be rapidly accessed from triarylstibine with readily available mandelic acid analogues, and the catalyst displays remarkable efficiency and enantiocontrol potency even at 0.05 mol % loading. Moreover, the properties of the catalyst and the mechanistic insights have been investigated by nonlinear effect studies, ¹H NMR, LC-MS, and control experiments.

A Hypervalent Cyclic Dibenzoiodolium Salt as a Halogen-Bond-Donor Catalyst for the [4+2] Cycloaddition of 2-Alkenylindoles

A stable, hypervalent cyclic dibenzoiodolium salt acted as a strong halogen bonding (XB)-donor catalyst for [4+2] cycloaddition of 2-alkenylindoles, and not as an oxidizing agent. The cross-[4+2] cycloaddition of 2-vinylindoles with 2-alkenylindoles was catalyzed smoothly by the hypervalent cyclic dibenzoiodolium triflate catalyst to give the tetrahydrocarbazoles in up to 99 % yield with 17 : 1 diastereoselectivity. The hypervalent cyclic dibenzoiodolium salt was also applicable to the Povarov reaction of 2-vinylindole with N-p-methoxyphenyl (PMP) imine to give the indolyl-tetrahydroquinoline in 83 % yield.

Triphenylantimony(V) Catecholates of the Type (3-RS-4,6-DBCat)SbPh3-Catechol Thioether Derivatives: Structure, Electrochemical Properties, and Antiradical Activity

A new series of triphenylantimony(V) 3-alkylthio/arylthio-substituted 4,6-di-tert-butylcatecholates of the type (3-RS-4,6-DBCat)SbPh3, where R = n-butyl (1), n-hexyl (2), n-octyl (3), cyclopentyl (4), cyclohexyl (5), benzyl (6), phenyl (7), and naphthyl-2 (8), were synthesized from the corresponding catechol thioethers and Ph3SbBr2 in the presence of a base. The crystal structures of 1, 2, 3, and 5 were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The coordination polyhedron of 1-3 is better described as a tetragonal pyramid with a different degree of distortion, while that for 5- was a distorted trigonal bipyramid (τ = 0.014, 0.177, 0.26, 0.56, respectively). Complexes demonstrated different crystal packing of molecules. The electrochemical oxidation of the complexes involved the catecholate group as well as the thioether linker. The introduction of a thioether fragment into the aromatic ring of catechol ligand led to a shift in the potential of the "catechol/o-semiquinone" redox transition to the anodic region, which indicated the electron-withdrawing nature of the RS group. The radical scavenging activity of the complexes was determined in the reaction with DPPH radical.

Reversible Silylium Transfer between P-H and Si-H Donors

The Mo=PR₂ π* orbital in a Mo phosphenium complex acts as acceptor in a new P^III -based Lewis superacid. This Lewis acid (LA) participates in electrophilic Si-H abstraction from E₃ SiH to give a Mo-bound secondary phosphine ligand, Mo-PR₂ H. The resulting Et₃ Si⁺ ion remains associated with the Mo complex, stabilized by η¹ -P-H donation, yet undergoes rapid exchange with an η¹ -Si-H adduct of free silane in solution. The equilibrium between these two adducts presents an opportunity to assess the role of this new LA in catalytic reactions of silanes: is the LA acting as a catalyst or as an initiator? Preliminary results suggest that a cycle including the Mo-bound phosphine-silylium adduct dominates in the catalytic hydrosilylation of acetophenone, relative to a putative cycle involving the silane-silylium adduct or "free" silylium.

Redox-controlled chalcogen and pnictogen bonding: the case of a sulfonium/stibonium dication as a preanionophore for chloride anion transport

Our interest in the chemistry of tunable chalcogen and pnictogen bond donors as Lewis acidic platforms for the complexation and transport of anions has led us to investigate examples of such compounds that can be activated by redox events. Here, we describe the synthesis of [o-MePhS(C6H4)SbPh3]2+ ([3]2+) and [o-MePhS(C6H4)Sb(p-Tol)3]2+ ([4]2+), two dicationic stibonium/sulfonium bifunctional Lewis acids which were obtained by methylation of the phenylthioether derivatives [o-PhS(C6H4)SbPh3]+ ([1]+) and [o-PhS(C6H4)Sb(p-Tol)3]+ ([2]+), respectively. An evaluation of the chloride anion transport properties of these derivatives using chloride-loaded POPC unilamellar vesicles shows that the activity of the monocations [1]+ and [2]+ greatly exceeds that of the dications [3]2+ and [4]2+, a phenomenon that we assign to the higher lipophilicity of the monocationic compounds. Harnessing this large transport activity differential, we show that [4]2+ can be used as a prechloridophore that is readily activated by reduction of the sulfonium moiety. Indeed, [4]2+ reacts with GSH to afford [2]+ as an active transporter. This activation, which has been monitored in aqueous solution, can also be carried out in situ, in the presence of the chloride-loaded POPC unilamellar vesicles.

Redox-controlled chalcogen-bonding at tellurium: impact on Lewis acidity and chloride anion transport properties

Our interests in the chemistry of atypical main group Lewis acids have led us to devise strategies that augment the affinity of chalcogen-bond donors for anionic guests. In this study, we describe the oxidative methylation of diaryltellurides as one such strategy along with its application to the synthesis of [Mes(C₆F₅)TeMe]⁺ and [(C₆F₅)₂TeMe]⁺ starting from Mes(C₆F₅)Te and (C₆F₅)₂Te, respectively. These new telluronium cations have been evaluated for their ability to complex and transport chloride anions across phospholipid bilayers. These studies show that, when compared to their neutral Te(ii) precursors, these Te(iv) cations display both higher Lewis acidity and transport activity. The positive attributes of these telluronium cations, which originate from a lowering of the tellurium-centered σ* orbitals and a deepening of the associated σ-holes, demonstrate that the redox state of the main group element provides a convenient handle over its chalcogen-bonding properties.

The oxidative alkylation of diorganotellurides enhances the chalcogen-bond donor properties of the tellurium center, an effect manifested in the enhanced chloride anion affinity and transport properties of the resulting telluronium cations.

Pnictogen-bonding catalysis: brevetoxin-type polyether cyclizations

This study marks chemical space available for pnictogen-bonding catalysis, and demonstrates that reactivity accessible in this space is unique.

Pnictogen-bond donors are attractive for use in catalysis because of deep σ holes, high multivalency, rich hypervalency, and chiral binding pockets. We here report natural product inspired epoxide-opening polyether cyclizations catalyzed by fluoroarylated Sb(v) > Sb(iii) > Bi > Sn > Ge. The distinctive characteristic found for pnictogen-bonding catalysis is the breaking of the Baldwin rules, that is selective endo cyclization into the trans-fused ladder oligomers known from the brevetoxins. Moreover, tris(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl)stibines and their hypervalent stiborane catecholates afford different anti-Baldwin stereoselectivity. Lewis (SbCl₃), Brønsted (AcOH) and π acids fail to provide similar access to these forbidden rings. Like hydrogen-bonding catalysis differs from Brønsted acid catalysis, pnictogen-bonding catalysis thus emerges as the supramolecular counterpart of covalent Lewis acid catalysis.

Triple-Pnictogen Bonding as a Tool for Supramolecular Assembly

Supramolecular assembly utilizing simultaneous formation of three pnictogen bonds around a single antimony vertex was explored via X-ray crystallography, solution NMR, and computational chemistry. An arylethynyl (AE) ligand was designed to complement the three electrophilic regions around the Sb compound. Though solution studies reveal large binding constants for individual pyridyl units with the Sb donor, the rigidity and prearrangement of the AE acceptor proved necessary to achieve simultaneous binding of three acceptors to the Sb-centered pnictogen-bond donor. Calculations and X-ray structures suggest that negative cooperativity upon sequential binding of three acceptors to a Sb center limits the utility of triple-pnictogen bonding pyridyl acceptors. These limitations can be negated, however, when positive cooperativity is designed into a complementary acceptor ligand.

Lewis Acidic PSbP Pincer Ligand in Pt-Catalyzed 1,6-Enyne Cycloisomerization: A Theoretical Study

The progressively improved heterobimetallic antimony transition metal complex PSbP-Pt (I1) provides superior activity in catalyzed 1,6-enyne cycloisomerization. Our DFT calculations demonstrate that the noninnocent character of the antimony ligand enhances the self-activation of the catalyst precursor through a substrate-aided intramolecular chloride migration, which triggers subsequent reaction. Designed alternative redox noninnocent active species with strong electron-withdrawing groups also show promising catalytic ability due to an electron-deficient antimony ligand, which lowers the typical reaction barrier for the cycloisomerization of 1,6-enyne.

Tetragonal phosphorus(v) cations as tunable and robust catalytic Lewis acids

The synthesis and catalytic reactivity of a class of water-tolerant cationic phosphorus-based Lewis acids is reported. Corrole-based phosphorus(v) cations of the type [ArP(cor)][B(C₆F₅)₄] (Ar = C₆H₅, 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃; cor = 5,10,15-(C₆H₅)₃corrolato^3–, 5,10,15-(C₆F₅)₃corrolato^3–) were synthesized and characterized by NMR and X-ray diffraction. The visible electronic absorption spectra of these cationic phosphacorroles depend strongly on the coordination environment at phosphorus, and their Lewis acidities are quantified by spectrophotometric titrations. DFT analyses establish that the character of the P-acceptor orbital comprises P–N antibonding interactions in the basal plane of the phosphacorrole. Consequently, the cationic phosphacorroles display unprecedented stability to water and alcohols while remaining highly active and robust Lewis acid catalysts for carbonyl hydrosilylation, C_sp³–H bond functionalization, and carbohydrate deoxygenation reactions.

121/123Sb Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectroscopy: Characterization of Non-Covalent Pnictogen Bonds and NQR Crystallography

Pnictogen (or pnicogen) bonding is an attractive interaction between the electrophilic region of group 15 elements (N, P, As, Sb, Bi) and a nucleophile. This interaction for which unique applications in catalysis have recently been uncovered continues to gain popularity. Here, we investigate a series of pnictogen-bonded cocrystals based on SbF₃ and SbCl₃, prepared via mechanochemical ball milling, with ^121/123Sb ( I = ⁵/₂ and ⁷/₂, respectively) nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy. Observed NQR frequency shifts upon cocrystallization are on the order of 0.1 to 10 MHz and are clearly diagnostic of the formation of pnictogen bonds to antimony. Further evidence for pnictogen bonding is obtained by complementary ¹³C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR experiments. DFT calculations of NMR parameters as well as natural localized molecular orbital analyses support the experimental findings and elucidate the electronic origins of the experimental NQR frequency shifts. This work provides insights into the changes in the antimony quadrupolar coupling constant upon pnictogen bonding: strikingly, the decreases noted here parallel those known for hydrogen bonds, but contrast with the increases reported for halogen bonds. The utility of the observed antimony nuclear quadrupolar coupling constants in constraining structural models of cocrystals for which diffraction-based structures are unavailable, i.e., a rudimentary implementation of NQR crystallography, is established. Overall, this work offers a new approach to understand emerging classes of electrophilic interactions and to contextualize them in the broader landscape of established chemical bonding paradigms.

A series of organoantimony(iii) halide complexes with a tetrahydrodibenzo[c,f][1,5]azastibocine framework were synthesized and employed as water tolerant Lewis acid catalysts.
