Abstract
A series of seven homoleptic CuI complexes based on hetero-bidentate P^N ligands was synthesized and comprehensively characterized. In order to study structure-property relationships, the type, size, number and configuration of substituents at the phosphinooxazoline (phox) ligands were systematically varied. To this end, a combination of X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy, time-resolved emission spectroscopy, quenching experiments and cyclic voltammetry was used to assess the photophysical and electrochemical properties. Furthermore, time-dependent density functional theory calculations were applied to also analyze the excited state structures and characteristics. Surprisingly, a strong dependency on the chirality of the respective P^N ligand was found, whereas the specific kind and size of the different substituents has only a minor impact on the properties in solution. Most importantly, all complexes except C3 are photostable in solution and show fully reversible redox processes. Sacrificial reductants were applied to demonstrate a successful electron transfer upon light irradiation. These properties render this class of photosensitizers as potential candidates for solar energy conversion issues.

Abstract
Conformationally flexible "Carbene-Metal-Amide" (CMA) complexes of copper and gold have been developed based on a combination of sterically hindered cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) and 6- and 7-ring heterocyclic amide ligands. These complexes show photoemissions across the visible spectrum with PL quantum yields of up to 89% in solution and 83% in host-guest films. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence (PL) studies combined with DFT calculations indicate the important role of ring structure and conformational flexibility of the amide ligands. Time-resolved PL shows efficient delayed emission with sub-microsecond to microsecond excited state lifetimes at room temperature, with radiative rates exceeding 106 s-1. Yellow organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on a 7-ring gold amide were fabricated by thermal vapor deposition, while the sky-blue to warm-white mechanochromic behavior of the gold phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide complex enabled fabrication of the first CMA-based white light-emitting OLED.

Abstract
Newly discovered tris(diisocyanide)molybdenum(0) complexes are Earth-abundant isoelectronic analogues of the well-known class of [Ru(α-diimine)3]2+ compounds with long-lived 3MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) excited states that lead to rich photophysics and photochemistry. Depending on ligand design, luminescence quantum yields up to 0.20 and microsecond excited state lifetimes are achieved in solution at room temperature, both significantly better than those for [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+. The excited Mo(0) complexes can induce chemical reactions that are thermodynamically too demanding for common precious metal-based photosensitizers, including the widely employed fac-[Ir(2-phenylpyridine)3] complex, as demonstrated on a series of light-driven aryl-aryl coupling reactions. The most robust Mo(0) complex exhibits stable photoluminescence and remains photoactive after continuous irradiation exceeding 2 months. Our comprehensive optical spectroscopic and photochemical study shows that Mo(0) complexes with diisocyanide chelate ligands constitute a new family of luminophores and photosensitizers, which is complementary to precious metal-based 4d6 and 5d6 complexes and represents an alternative to nonemissive Fe(II) compounds. This is relevant in the greater context of sustainable photophysics and photochemistry, as well as for possible applications in lighting, sensing, and catalysis.

Abstract
Fluorescent molecules and materials that exhibit emission changes in response to analytes are of great interest across multiple disciplines. Herein, we investigate the response of NH-containing fluorophores carbazole and 2-phenylbenzimidazole (Ph-BIM) with two representative isolable singlet carbenes. Specifically, N-heterocyclic carbene 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr) and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,4-diethyl-2,2-dimethyl-pyrrolidin-5-ylidene (EtCAAC) were discovered to afford three different types of reaction products with carbazole and Ph-BIM. Depending on the reaction pair, hydrogen bonding (1), NH-insertion (2,3), or proton transfer (4) products can be isolated, each displaying variable photophysical responses. These products have been structurally authenticated by single crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectrometric methods. Studies of the solution state behavior of 1-4 reveals that these adducts are labile and can reversibly dissociate to free carbenes and fluorophores to varying extents. These equilibria produce concentration dependent solution state behavior as identified and quantified via UV-visible absorption, emission, 1H DOSY, and NMR spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract
Extending the ligand π-system of phosphorescent (C∧C*) or (C∧N) cyclometalated platinum(II) β-diketonate complexes can lead to large and seemingly abrupt variations of the photophysical properties such as triplet quantum yields and phosphorescence lifetimes. Quantum chemical studies using methods including elements from density functional theory (DFT) and multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) as well as spin-orbit coupling (SOC) provide a rationale for these observations. In the Franck-Condon region, the first excited singlet states (S1) of these complexes are characterized by mixed metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) excitations. With increasing extension of the effective π-system, the lowest-lying triplet state yields more and more LC character, thus leading to a decrease of the phosphorescence rate constant. The ability to undergo efficient intersystem crossing from S1 to T1 is not diminished as the S1 state largely retains its character. In the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes investigated here, at least two triplet states are found energetically below the S1 state. Out-of-plane distortion enhances the probability for nonradiative decay of the triplet population. In the smaller compounds emitting in the violet or blue spectral region, the phosphorescent state is separated from the lowest-lying dark metal-centered (MC) triplet state by a small barrier only, explaining their experimentally observed low photoluminescence quantum yields in liquid solution. The semiempirical DFT/MRCI-R2018 Hamiltonian employed in our studies proves well-suited for investigating the absorption and emission properties of these platinum(II) complexes. Generally, good agreement is observed between our calculated data and the experimental findings.

Abstract
Multireference configuration interaction methods including spin-orbit interactions have been employed to investigate the photophysical properties of various linear N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) copper(I) pyridine complexes with the aim of designing performant thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters for use in organic-light-emitting diodes. Our theoretical results indicate that this structural motif is very favorable for generating excited triplet states with high quantum yield. The first excited singlet (SMLCT) and corresponding triplet state (TMLCT) are characterized by dσ → πPy metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitations. Efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) and reverse ISC (rISC) between these states is mediated by a near-degenerate second triplet state (TMLCT/LC) with large dπ → πPy contributions. Spin-vibronic coupling is strong and is expected to play a major role in the (r)ISC processes. The calculations reveal, however, that the luminescence is effectively quenched by locally excited triplet states if the NHC ligand carries two diisopropylphenyl (DIPP) substituents. When DIPP is replaced with 1-adamantyl residues, this quenching process is suppressed and TADF in the UV spectral regime is predicted to proceed at a rate of about 1/μs. The introduction of +I substituents on the carbene and -M substituents on the pyridine allows tuning of the emission wavelength from the UV to the blue-green or green spectral region.

Abstract
The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Abstract
A series of six luminescent two-coordinate Cu(I) complexes were investigated bearing nonconventional N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, monoamido-aminocarbene (MAC*) and diamidocarbene (DAC*), along with carbazolyl (Cz) as well as mono- and dicyano-substituted Cz derivatives. The emission color can be systematically varied over 270 nm, from violet to red, through proper choice of the acceptor (carbene) and donor (carbazolyl) groups. The compounds exhibit photoluminescent quantum efficiencies up to 100% in fluid solution and polystyrene films with short decay lifetimes (τ ≈ 1 μs). The radiative rate constants for the Cu(I) complexes ( kr = 105-106 s-1) are comparable to state of the art phosphorescent emitters with noble metals such as Ir and Pt. All complexes show strong solvatochromism due to the large dipole moment of the ground states and the transition dipole moment that is in the opposite direction. Temperature-dependent studies of (MAC*)Cu(Cz) reveal a small energy separation between the lowest singlet and triplet states (Δ ES1-T1 = 500 cm-1) and an exceptionally large zero-field splitting (ZFS = 85 cm-1). Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated with (MAC*)Cu(Cz) as a green emissive dopant have high external quantum efficiencies (EQE = 19.4%) and brightness of 54 000 cd/m2 with modest roll-off at high currents. The complex can also serve as a neat emissive layer to make highly efficient OLEDs (EQE = 16.3%).

Abstract
Luminescent complexes of heavy metals such as iridium, platinum, and ruthenium play an important role in photocatalysis and energy conversion applications as well as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Achieving comparable performance from more-earth-abundant copper requires overcoming the weak spin-orbit coupling of the light metal as well as limiting the high reorganization energies typical in copper(I) [Cu(I)] complexes. Here we report that two-coordinate Cu(I) complexes with redox active ligands in coplanar conformation manifest suppressed nonradiative decay, reduced structural reorganization, and sufficient orbital overlap for efficient charge transfer. We achieve photoluminescence efficiencies >99% and microsecond lifetimes, which lead to an efficient blue-emitting OLED. Photophysical analysis and simulations reveal a temperature-dependent interplay between emissive singlet and triplet charge-transfer states and amide-localized triplet states.

Abstract
In this invited Perspective, recent developments and possible future directions of research on photoactive coordination compounds made from nonprecious transition metal elements will be discussed. The focus is on conceptually new, structurally well-characterized complexes with excited-state lifetimes between 10 ps and 1 ms in fluid solution for possible applications in photosensitizing, light-harvesting, luminescence and catalysis. The key metal elements considered herein are Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Mo, W and Ce in various oxidation states equipped with diverse ligands, giving access to long-lived excited states via a range of fundamentally different types of electronic transitions. Research performed in this area over the past five years demonstrated that a much broader spectrum of metal complexes than what was long considered relevant exhibits useful photophysics and photochemistry.

Abstract
Cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes with a six-membered backbone were prepared. Compared to their five-membered analogues, they feature increased % Vbur and enhanced donor and acceptor properties, as evidenced by the observed n → π* transition trailing into the visible region. The high ambiphilic character even allows for the intramolecular insertion of the carbene into an unactivated C(sp3)-H bond. When used as ligands, they outcompete the five-membered analogues in the palladium-mediated α-arylation of ketones with aryl chlorides.

Abstract
The excited state properties of a series of binuclear NHetPHOS-Cu(I) complexes (NHetPHOS) have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT). It is shown that experimental trends observed in powder, generally explored via S1 and T1 excited state energetics and S1 ⇔ T1 intersystem crossing (ISC) efficiency, are hardly analyzed on the basis of excited state properties calculated in solution. Indeed, several local minima corresponding to various structural deformations are evident on the lowest excited state potential energy surfaces (PES) when solvent correction is applied, leading to a four-state thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) mechanism. In contrast, preliminary simulations performed in the solid point to the reduction of nuclear flexibility and consequently to a rather simple two-state model.

Abstract
Photoredox chemistry with metal complexes as sensitizers and catalysts frequently relies on precious elements such as ruthenium or iridium. Over the past 5 years, important progress towards the use of complexes made from earth-abundant elements in photoredox catalysis has been made. This review summarizes the advances made with photoactive CrIII , FeII , CuI , ZnII , ZrIV , Mo0 , and UVI complexes in the context of synthetic organic photoredox chemistry using visible light as an energy input. Mechanistic considerations are combined with discussions of reaction types and scopes. Perspectives for the future of the field are discussed against the background of recent significant developments of new photoactive metal complexes made from earth-abundant elements.

Abstract
Cr(iii) and Cr(0) complexes are earth-abundant alternatives to photosensitizers that are commonly made from precious metals.
Some complexes of Cr(iii) and Cr(0) have long been known to exhibit interesting photophysical and photochemical properties, but in the past few years important conceptual progress was made. This Perspective focuses on the recent developments of Cr(iii) complexes as luminophores and dyes for solar cells, their application in photoredox catalysis, their use as sensitizers in upconversion processes, and their performance as photochemical nitric oxide sources. The example of a luminescent Cr(0) isocyanide complex illustrates the possibility of obtaining photoactive analogues of d6 metal complexes that are commonly made from precious metals such as Ru(ii) or Ir(iii). The studies highlighted herein illustrate the favorable excited-state properties of robust first-row transition metal complexes with broad application potential.

Abstract
Copper and gold halide and pseudo-halide complexes stabilised by methyl-, ethyl- and adamantyl-substituted cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands are mostly linear monomers in the solid state, without aurophilic Au⋅⋅⋅Au interactions. (Et2 L)CuCl shows the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the series, 70 %. The photoemissions of Me2 L and Et2 L copper halide complexes show S1 →S0 fluorescence on the ns time scale, in agreement with theory, as well as a long-lived emission. Monomeric (Me2 L)CuNCS is a white emitter, whereas dimeric [(Et2 L)Cu(μ-NCS)]2 shows intense yellow emission with a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 49 %. The reaction of (Ad L)MCl (M=Cu or Au) with phenols ArOH (Ar=Ph, 2,6-F2 C6 H3 , 2,6-Me2 C6 H3 , 3,5-tBu2 C6 H3 , 2-tBu-5-MeC6 H3 , 2-pyridyl), thiophenol, or aromatic amines H2 NAr'' (Ar'=Ph, 3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 , C6 F5 , 2-py) afforded the corresponding phenolato, thiophenolato and amido complexes. Although the emission wavelengths are only marginally affected by the ring substitution pattern, the PL intensities respond sensitively to the presence of substituents in the ortho or meta positions. In gold aryloxides, PL is controlled by steric factors, with strong luminescence in compounds with Au-O-C-C torsion angles <50°. Calculations confirm the dependence of oscillator strength on the torsion angle, as well as the inter-ligand charge transfer nature of the emission. The HOMO/LUMO energy levels were estimated based on first reduction and oxidation potentials.
