Abstract
A novel conformation driven self-assembly system, where four metallocycles with different conformations have been in situ self-assembled, has been reported. Interestingly, only square metallocycles can further interlock into polycatenanes. However, rectangular and rhombus metallocycles fail to overcome such an entropically unfavourable process, which constitutes an obstacle to the formation of polycatenanes.

Abstract
Homochiral strands of alternating alleno-acetylenes and phenanthroline ligands (P)-1 and (P2)-2, as well as their corresponding enantiomers, selectively assemble with the addition of silver(I) salt to yield dinuclear and trinuclear double helicates, respectively. Upon increasing the solvent polarity, the dinuclear and trinuclear helicates interlock to form a [2]catenane and bis[2]catenane, bearing 14 chirality elements, respectively. The solid-state structure of the [2]catenane reveals a nearly perfect fit of the interlocked strands, and the ECD spectra show a significant amplification of the chiroptical properties upon catenation, indicating stabilization of the helical secondary structure. Highly selective narcissistic self-sorting was demonstrated for a racemic mixture consisting of both short and long alleno-acetylenic strands, highlighting their potential for the preparation of linear catenanes of higher order.

Abstract
We report a diverted route to [1]rotaxane and tris-branched [1]rotaxane that are devoid of any efficient template and which could not be obtained by classical straightforward strategies. The described chemical route relies on the utilization of a "macrocycle transporter", which is able first to bind a macrocycle, second to link temporarily a triazolium-containing molecular axle, and third to deliver the macrocycle around the new docked axle through molecular machinery in a [1]rotaxane structure. The extended encircled thread is eventually cleaved by an amine or a triamine to afford the triazolium-containing [1]rotaxanes, releasing at the same time, the macrocycle transporter as a recyclable species.

Abstract
Half a century after Schill and Lüttringhaus carried out the first directed synthesis of a [2]catenane, a plethora of strategies now exist for the construction of molecular Hopf links (singly interlocked rings), the simplest type of catenane. The precision and effectiveness with which suitable templates and/or noncovalent interactions can arrange building blocks has also enabled the synthesis of intricate and often beautiful higher order interlocked systems, including Solomon links, Borromean rings, and a Star of David catenane. This Review outlines the diverse strategies that exist for synthesizing catenanes in the 21st century and examines their emerging applications and the challenges that still exist for the synthesis of more complex topologies.

Abstract
AbstractThe nonenzymatic synthesis of nucleic acids, in particular, RNA, and the template-directed synthesis of artificial organic molecules, such as macrocycles, catenanes and rotaxanes, have both undergone significant development since the last half of the 20th century. The intersection of these two fields affords insights into how template effects can lead to information copying and storage at the molecular level. Mechanistic examples of model template-directed RNA replication experiments as well as those for totally artificial organic template-directed syntheses will be discussed. The fact that templates typically bind to their reacted products more tightly than their unreacted substrates may be a mechanistic feature necessary to store information in the form of nucleic acids. Understanding the mechanisms of nonenzymatic RNA synthesis is not only essential for testing the RNA world hypothesis in the context of the origin of life on Earth and other planetary bodies, but may one day afford chemists the insights to construct their own artificial molecular replicators.

Abstract
Aromatic-ring stacking is pronounced among the noncovalent interactions occurring in biosystems and therefore some pertinent features regarding nucleobase residues are summarized. Self-stacking decreases in the series adenine > guanine > hypoxanthine > cytosine ~ uracil. This contrasts with the stability of binary (phen)(N) adducts formed by 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and a nucleobase residue (N), which is largely independent of the type of purine residue involved, including (N1)H-deprotonated guanine. Furthermore, the association constant for (phen)(A)(0/4-) is rather independent of the type and charge of the adenine derivative (A) considered, be it adenosine or one of its nucleotides, including adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP(4-)). The same holds for the corresponding adducts of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), although owing to the smaller size of the aromatic-ring system of bpy, the (bpy)(A)(0/4-) adducts are less stable; the same applies correspondingly to the adducts formed with pyrimidines. In accord herewith, [M(bpy)](adenosine)(2+) adducts (M(2+) is Co(2+), Ni(2+), or Cu(2+)) show the same stability as the (bpy)(A)(0/4-) ones. The formation of an ionic bridge between -NH3 (+) and -PO3 (2-), as provided by tryptophan [H(Trp)(±)] and adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP(2-)), facilitates recognition and stabilizes the indole-purine stack in [H(Trp)](AMP)(2-). Such indole-purine stacks also occur in nature. Similarly, the formation of a metal ion bridge as occurs, e.g., between Cu(2+) coordinated to phen and the phosphonate group of 9-[2-(phosphonomethoxy)ethyl]adenine (PMEA(2-)) dramatically favors the intramolecular stack in Cu(phen)(PMEA). The consequences of such interactions for biosystems are discussed, especially emphasizing that the energies involved in such isomeric equilibria are small, allowing Nature to shift such equilibria easily.

Abstract
Host-guest interactions between two electron-rich dibenzocrown ethers and electron deficient macrocyclic copper(II) tetraimine complexes lead to the formation of pseudorotaxane in solution. The interactions are enhanced with the copper(III) complex compared to that of the copper(II) form as shown by the electrochemical studies. The larger--30-membered dibenzocrown donor interacted with the copper complex stronger than the smaller ones as revealed by NMR and electrochemical methods. The thiolated form of the copper(II) tetraimine complex was self-assembled at the gold electrode forming an electroactive monolayer able to interact with the crown ether in the solution. These donor-acceptor interactions lead to an increase of the barrier properties of the layer and decreased the electron transfer rate between the copper centre and the gold electrode surface as proved by the voltammetric data.

Abstract
The chemistry of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs), in which two or more covalently linked components are held together by mechanical bonds, has led to the coining of the term mechanostereochemistry to describe a new field of chemistry that embraces many aspects of MIMs, including their syntheses, properties, topologies where relevant and functions where operative. During the rapid development and emergence of the field, the synthesis of MIMs has witnessed the forsaking of the early and grossly inefficient statistical approaches for template-directed protocols, aided and abetted by molecular recognition processes and the tenets of self-assembly. The resounding success of these synthetic protocols, based on templation, has facilitated the design and construction of artificial molecular switches and machines, resulting more and more in the creation of integrated functional systems. This review highlights (i) the range of template-directed synthetic methods being used currently in the preparation of MIMs; (ii) the syntheses of topologically complex knots and links in the form of stable molecular compounds; and (iii) the incorporation of bistable MIMs into many different device settings associated with surfaces, nanoparticles and solid-state materials in response to the needs of particular applications that are perceived to be fair game for mechanostereochemistry.
