On the role of recurrent inhibitory feedback in motor control

This article reviews presumed roles of recurrent inhibition in motor control, that have been proposed over the past five decades. The discussion is structured in an order of increasing complexity. It starts out with the simplest and earliest circuit, that is recurrent self-inhibition of skeleto-motoneurons, and related functions. It soon becomes clear that in order to understand recurrent inhibition, we must look beyond the simple self-inhibitory CNS circuit. First, recurrent inhibition must be seen in the context of other neural circuits. Second, some quantitative features appear to be correlated with features of the neuromusculo-skeletal periphery. Third, the aspect of lateral inhibition between different members of a motoneuron pool as well as between different motoneuron pools points to the essential multiple input-multiple output structure of recurrent inhibition that again can be understood only by correlating it with features of the neuromusculo-skeletal periphery. Another extension results from the discovery that recurrent inhibition affects not only skeleto-motoneurons, but also gamma-motoneurons, Ia inhibitory interneurons mediating reciprocal inhibition between antagonist motoneurons, other Renshaw cells and cells of origin of the ventral spinocerebellar tract (VSCT). Then the view broadens again, investigating the potential role that recurrent inhibition plays in two far-ranging theories of motor control, the inverse-dynamics approach and the equilibrium-point hypothesis. Finally, the present author tries to formulate, in broad strokes, a personal functional interpretation of recurrent inhibition. All the functional considerations, right or wrong, should yield ideas for new experiments, and this then is the last objective of this review.

Three-dimensional structure of cat tibialis anterior motor units

The motor unit is the basic unit for force production in a muscle. However, the position and shape of the territory of a motor unit within the muscle have not been defined precisely. The territories of five motor units in the cat tibialis anterior muscle were reconstructed three-dimensionally (3-D) from tracings of the glycogen-depleted fibers belonging to each unit. The motor unit territories did not span the entire length of the muscle and their cross-sectional areas tapered along the proximodistal axis producing a conical shape. In addition, the position of the territory of each unit shifted in an anterior-posterior plane along the longitudinal axis of the muscle, presumably as a consequence of the pinnation of the fibers. The area of the motor unit territory at any given level along the proximodistal axis was highly correlated with the number of fibers within the territory at that level. Connective tissue boundaries (outlining fascicles) appeared to have a strong influence on the shape of the territory, territories showed abrupt changes at connective tissue boundaries as groups of motor unit fibers within a fascicle often terminated together while motor unit fibers in neighboring fascicles did not terminate. It is likely that the mechanical impact of the recruitment of a motor unit is affected by the location and shape of motor units within the same muscle area.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Human motor units studied by intramuscular microstimulation

We recorded twitch parameters of motor units of the human first dorsal interosseus muscle applying low-rate intramuscular microstimulation of motor axons (IMS) or spike-triggered averaging (STA). The values of contraction time, half-relaxation time and maximal rate of rise of force were significantly smaller in the STA studies. The reduction corresponded to the effect expected from partial twitch fusion. Twitch amplitudes, however, were not smaller than those in the IMS studies, indicating that other factors, such as motor unit synchronization, compensate for the effects of partial fusion.

Assessment of human motor unit twitches--a comparison of spike-triggered averaging and intramuscular microstimulation

We recorded twitches of single motor units (MUs) in the human first dorsal interosseus muscle using either spike-triggered averaging (STA; 236 MUs in 12 normal subjects) or low-rate intramuscular microstimulation of motor axons (IMS; 200 MUs in 20 normal subjects). We analysed twitch force (TF), maximal rate of rise of force (MRRF), contraction time (CT) and half-relaxation time (HRT). MRRF, CT and HRT were significantly smaller with STA than with IMS whereas TFs were fairly similar. Higher stimulus rates (up to 14 Hz) in IMS resembling the voluntary MU firing rates in STA were associated with a decrease of all twitch parameters because of partial fusion of the twitches (20 MUs). Concerning MRRF, CT and HRT, the reduced values matched those obtained by STA, suggesting that the underestimation of these parameters in STA can be mainly attributed to partial fusion. The reduction of TF with high rate IMS but not with STA reveals that other factors such as MU synchronization and non-linear force summation of MU contractions must counteract the effects of partial fusion in STA. We conclude that both STA and IMS are appropriate for assessing TFs in man while the time-dependent parameters MRRF, CT and HRT will be underestimated with STA.

Velocity specificity of resistance training

Velocity specificity of resistance training has demonstrated that the greatest strength gains occur at or near the training velocity. There is also evidence that the intent to make a high speed contraction may be the most crucial factor in velocity specificity. The mechanisms underlying the velocity-specific training effect may reside in both neural and muscular components. Muscular adaptations such as hypertrophy may inhibit high velocity strength adaptations due to changes in muscle architecture. However, some studies have reported velocity-specific contractile property adaptations suggesting changes in muscle kinetics. There is evidence to suggest velocity-specific electromyographic (EMG) adaptations with explosive jump training. Other researchers have hypothesised neural adaptations because of a lack of electrically evoked changes in relation to significant voluntary improvements. These neural adaptations may include the selective activation of motor units and/or muscles, especially with high velocity alternating contractions. Although the incidence of motor unit synchronisation increases with training, its contribution to velocity-specific strength gains is unclear. However, increased synchronisation may occur more frequently with the premovement silent period before ballistic contractions. The preprogrammed neural circuitry of ballistic contractions suggests that high velocity training adaptations may involve significant neural adaptations. The unique firing frequency associated with ballistic contractions would suggest possible adaptations in the frequency of motor unit discharge. Although co-contraction of antagonists increases with training and high velocity movement, its contribution is probably related more to joint protection than the velocity-specific training effect.

Voluntary discharge frequencies of human motoneurons at different muscle lengths

The relationship between the discharge frequencies of motoneurons and the voluntary force at high contraction strengths (50% to 100% maximum) was determined for tibialis anterior with the ankle: (i) at 90 degrees (control length); and (ii) this angle reduced by about 15 degrees (short length), an amount sufficient to reduce the maximal voluntary force by about 35%. In the shortened position, twitch contraction and half-relaxation times were reduced by 11% and 18%, respectively. At both muscle lengths, the ability to activate the muscle fully by voluntary effort was confirmed by twitch interpolation. Motor unit firing rates were recorded during isometric voluntary contractions lasting 10 seconds, performed at 50%, 75%, and 100% maximal force. At each length, discharge rates varied in proportion to the relative force exerted. Despite the difference in twitch contractile speed at the two lengths, no significant differences were found between motoneuron discharge rates recorded at each muscle length during maximal or submaximal contractions.

Physiological and developmental implications of motor unit anatomy

There is increasing evidence that the architectural design and arrangement of the fibers within a motor unit have important physiological and developmental ramifications. Limited data, however, are available to directly address this issue. In the present study the physiological properties of one motor unit in each of seven cat tibialis anterior (TA) muscles were determined. Each of these units then was repetitively stimulated to deplete the glycogen in all muscle fibers within the unit. Subsequently, the length, type of ending, and spatial distribution of fibers sampled from these physiologically and histochemically typed motor units were determined. Four fast fatigable (FF), one fast, fatigue resistant (FR), and two slow (S) motor units (MU) were studied. The samples consisted of all those glycogen-depleted fibers (9-27) contained within a single fascicle or a circumscribed area of each of the motor unit territories. The mean fiber lengths for the two slow motor units were 35.9 and 45.5 mm. The mean fiber lengths for the fast motor unit samples ranged from 8.8 to 48.5 mm. Some fibers of both the fast and slow units reached lengths of 58 mm. Most of the fibers in the slow units extended the entire distance between the proximal and distal musculotendinous planes, had relatively constant cross-sectional areas, and terminated at the tendon as blunt endings. In contrast, the majority of the fibers in the fast units terminated intrafascicularly at one end, and the cross-sectional area decreased progressively along their lengths, that is, showed a tapering pattern for a significant proportion of their lengths. Therefore, the force generated by units that end midfascicularly would appear to be transmitted to connective tissue elements and/or adjacent fibers. All fibers of a fast unit within a fascicle were located at approximately the same proximo-distal location. Thus, developmentally the selection of muscle fibers by a motoneuron would seem to be influenced by their spatial distribution. The architectural complexities of motor units also have clear implications for the mechanical interactions of active and inactive motor units. For example, the tension capabilities of a motor unit may be influenced not only by the spatial arrangement of its own fibers, but also by the level of activation of neighboring motor units.

Regulation of skeletal muscle fiber size, shape and function

There is convincing evidence that the cross-sectional area, the type of myosin expressed, the potential for oxidative phosphorylation and the number of myonuclei of a skeletal muscle fiber are closely interdependent. Each of these variables, as well as the shape of the fiber, has identifiable physiological consequences. Further, it is suggested that the cytoplasmic to myonucleus ratio is a function of the myosin type and the amount and/or rate of protein synthesis and degradation. Although the neuromuscular activity (electromyographic activity) as well as the associated mechanical and metabolic events have significant regulatory influences on protein metabolism, there are other important regulatory factors independent of these activity-related events. Both the activity and non-activity related regulatory mechanisms probably occur via a cascade of cellular events. The specific combinations of cellular responses that occur may define the nature of the modulatory effects on specific proteins. In spite of the complexity of the regulatory mechanisms of protein modulation and how these responses are structurally integrated into or removed from functional fibers, it is suggested that controlled studies of human neuromuscular function can be more accurately defined and interpreted when fiber and muscle size and shape are considered.

Recruitment, force and fatigue characteristics of quadriceps muscles of paraplegics isometrically activated by surface functional electrical stimulation

This study deals with the recruitment characteristics of unfatigued electrically stimulated quadriceps muscles of paraplegic subjects and with the time-dependent force output of these muscles under sustained stimulation conditions. Both these aspects of the performance of paralysed stimulated muscles were studied under isometric conditions and at different muscle lengths. The forces in the knee joint resulting from stimulation of the quadriceps were also calculated. Recruitment force curves due to a ramp-like stimulation function indicated a strong dependence on muscle length and demonstrated a sigmoid-shaped curve with three distinct regions: negligible force up to threshold stimulation intensity; rapid force increase; and levelling-off of the curve after which the force remains constant even though intensity is further increased. When normalized to the maximal force, recruitment was found to be independent of muscle length, generating a typical recruitment curve for every patient, under isometric stimulation. The peak forces were obtained at the same flexion angles previously published for normal subjects, but with much lower values. Muscle fatigue in tetanic isometric conditions, defined as the decrease in force due to sustained stimulation with fixed parameters, was found to be length dependent and to have a double exponential decay. The first is the acute force loss and is the more significant for functional purposes; the second is the more moderate and asymptotic region, in which partial force recovery in the form of bursts is observed.

Activation of Golgi tendon organs by asynchronous contractions of motor units in cat leg muscles

Discharges from individual tendon organs of peroneus tertius muscle activated by the isometric contractions of single motor units were recorded in anaesthetized cats. Pairs of motor units acting on the same tendon organ were stimulated asynchronously at frequencies eliciting unfused contractions. Tendon organ responses to such contractions did not display a linear relation between discharge frequency and contractile force recorded at the muscle tendon. In several instances, one of the motor units exerted a predominant influence on the response of the tendon organ, even though this unit did not produce the strongest activation of the receptor when stimulated on its own.
