Autism and Piaget's theory: are the two compatible?

Autism is interpreted in Piagetian terms with particular reference to the question of whether the atypical cognitive development represents an exception to the similar sequence hypothesis. Findings from relevant research applying Piaget's theory to mental retardation, psychosis, and autism are reviewed. The apparent exceptions to the hypothesis presented in autistic individuals are explained by Piaget's two-factor theory of figurative versus operative functions. Many autistic individuals show an arrest in operative functions at the sensorimotor level while continuing to progress in figurative functions. The early arrest interferes with subsequent development of higher-level conceptual, symbolic, and social skills. Questions for research are offered.

Defining the social deficits of autism: the contribution of non-verbal communication measures

Young autistic children were compared to normal and control samples on measures of non-verbal communication skills and object play skills. Deficits in non-verbal indicating behaviors best discriminated the children diagnosed as autistic from the other groups. Although the autistic children also exhibited deficits in object play behavior, these deficits did not add appreciably to the discriminant function based on the non-verbal communication behaviors. These results suggest that a deficit in the development of non-verbal indicating behaviors is a significant characteristic of young children who receive the diagnosis of autism.

The Lowe and Costello Symbolic Play Test in socially impaired children

The Symbolic Play Test was given to 31 socially impaired and 29 sociable children retarded in language comprehension, with the same range of age (5 to 12 years) and intelligence (profoundly retarded to normal). Play test age and spontaneous pretend play were at a similar level in the sociable children, but, in the socially impaired, spontaneous pretend play was lower than the play test age would predict. In some of the latter it was absent, and in the others it was narrow and repetitive in form. For subgroups of socially impaired and sociable children with similar play ages, there was no significant difference in language comprehension age. The discrepancy, in socially impaired children, between levels on tests and spontaneous use of skills was discussed.

Mental ability, symbolic play and receptive and expressive language of young children with Down's syndrome

The relationship between measures of mental ability, symbolic play and expressive and receptive language was investigated in a sample of 73 children with Down's syndrome (mean CA 48.9 months, range 19-90 months; mean MA 30.4 months, range 13-73 months). Language delay became increasingly apparent with age, and more so in boys than girls. There was no significant difference between mental ages derived from standard ability tests and corresponding age equivalent scores of the Lowe and Costello symbolic play test. A developmental progression of play similar to that seen in non-handicapped groups was found. However, it is suggested that the use of a more detailed scoring system would be informative.
