Abstract
Single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties of terbium(III)-phthalocyaninato quintuple-decker complex TbCdCdTb were studied and were compared with those of other multiple-decker complexes (triple-decker: TbTb, quadruple-decker: TbCdTb) to elucidate the relationship between magnetic dipole interactions and SMM properties. From X-ray crystallography performed with synchrotron radiation, the Tb(III)-Tb(III) distance in TbCdCdTb was determined to be 9.883 Å. From alternating current magnetic studies on TbCdCdTb, the activation energy for spin reversal (Δ) increased with an increase in the direct current magnetic field (Hdc). This behavior is similar to that of TbCdTb, although the increase in Δ for TbCdTb is smaller. On the other hand, for TbTb, which has shortest Tb(III)-Tb(III) distance, Δ did not depend on Hdc, indicating that there is a correlation between SMM properties and the strength of the Tb(III)-Tb(III) interactions. By comparing the Zeeman diagrams for multiple-decker complexes, we found that the Tb(III)-Tb(III) interactions affected the magnetic field regions where quantum tunnelling of the magnetization was active. The results obtained from Zeeman diagrams are consistent with the results obtained from the magnetic studies.

Abstract
Self-assembly of functional compounds into a prerequisite nanostructure with desirable dimension and morphology by controlling and optimizing intermolecular interaction attracts an extensive research interest for chemists and material scientist. In this work, a new triple-decker sandwich-type lanthanide complex with phthalocyanine and redox-active Schiff base ligand including tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units has been synthesized, and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, absorption spectra, electrochemical and magnetic measurements. Interestingly, the non-centrosymmetric target complex displays a bias dependent selective adsorption on a solid surface, as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the single molecule level. Density function theory (DFT) calculations are utilized to reveal the formation mechanism of the molecular assemblies, and show that such electrical field dependent selective adsorption is regulated by the interaction between the external electric field and intrinsic molecular properties. Our results suggest that this type of multi-decker complex involving TTF units shows intriguing multifunctional properties from the viewpoint of structure, electric and magnetic behaviors, and fabrication through self-assembly.

Abstract
The triple-decker complexes of symmetrical type [m Br 4 TPP ] Ln [(15 C 5)4 Pc ] Ln [m Br 4 TPP ] ( Ln -m TD ; Ln = La , Nd ; [(15 C 5)4 Pc ] = tetra-(15-crown-5)-phthalocyaninato-ligand; [m Br 4 TPP ] = tetrakis-meso-(3-bromophenyl)-porphyrinato-ligand) are synthesized for the first time with 43% and 36% yield. The applicability of the previously developed selective one-step synthetic approach for the preparation of the mentioned complexes is demonstrated and the limitations, determined by meta-substitution of meso-aryl-fragments, are revealed. The spectral features of the obtained complexes is determined by means of UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy. The hindered rotation of porphyrin meso-substituents in the obtained complexes and formation of statistical set of atropisomers are demonstrated.

Abstract
The coherent transport properties of a device, constructed by sandwiching a Mn6 single-molecule magnet between two gold surfaces, are studied theoretically by using the non-equilibrium Green's function approach combined with density functional theory. Two spin states of such Mn6 complexes are explored, namely the ferromagnetically coupled configuration of the six Mn(III) cations, leading to the S = 12 ground state, and the low S = 4 spin state. For voltages up to 1 volt the S = 12 ground state shows a current one order of magnitude larger than that of the S = 4 state. Furthermore this is almost completely spin-polarized, since the Mn6 frontier molecular orbitals for S = 12 belong to the same spin manifold. As such the high-anisotropy Mn6 molecule appears as a promising candidate for implementing, at the single molecular level, both spin-switches and low-temperature spin-valves.

Abstract
A series of seven-coordinate mononuclear lanthanide(III) complexes of the general formula [(TPP)Ln(L(OEt))]·0.25H2O and [(Pc)Ln(L(OEt))] (Ln(3+) = Dy(3+), Tb(3+), Ho(3+), and Gd(3+); TPP = 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinate; Pc = phthalocyaninate; L(OEt)(-) = [(η(5)-C5H5)Co(P(=O)(OEt)2)3](-)) are synthesized on the basis of the tripodal ligand L(OEt)(-) and either porphyrin or phthalocyanine ligands. All of the complexes are characterized by X-ray crystallography and by static and dynamic magnetic measurements. The Dy and Tb complexes show the field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization, and they are interesting seven-coordinate single-lanthanide-based SMMs. The magnetic relaxation properties of these double-decker sandwich complexes are influenced by the local molecular symmetry and are sensitive to subtle distortions of the coordination geometry of the paramagnetic lanthanide ions, such as metal-to-plane distances, plane center distances, and bending angles.

Abstract
Unlike electronics, which is based on the freedom of the charge of an electron whose memory is volatile, spintronics is based on the freedom of the charge, spin, and orbital of an electron whose memory is non-volatile. Although in most GMR, TMR, and CMR systems, bulk or classical magnets that are composed of transition metals are used, this Focus Review considers the growing use of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) that are composed of multinuclear metal complexes and nanosized magnets, which exhibit slow magnetic-relaxation processes and quantum tunneling. Molecular spintronics, which combines spintronics and molecular electronics, is an emerging field of research. Using molecules is advantageous because their electronic and magnetic properties can be manipulated under specific conditions. Herein, recent developments in [LnPc]-based multiple-decker SMMs on surfaces for molecular spintronic devices are presented. First, we discuss the strategies for preparing single-molecular-memory devices by using SMMs. Next, we focus on the switching of the Kondo signal of [LnPc]-based multiple-decker SMMs that are adsorbed onto surfaces, their characterization by using STM and STS, and the relationship between the molecular structure, the electronic structure, and the Kondo resonance of [TbPc(2)]. Finally, the field-effect-transistor (FET) properties of surface-adsorbed [LnPc(2)] and [Ln(2)Pc(3)] cast films are reported, which is the first step towards controlling SMMs through their spins for applications in single-molecular memory and spintronics devices.

Abstract
An alkyl chain-substituted multidecker porphyrin (a cerium double-decker porphyrin (CeDDP) and a lanthanum triple-decker porphyrin (LaTDP)) complexes were arranged in a monolayer array on Au(111) substrate. By using a pulse injection deposition method, both multidecker complexes were deposited on the surface intact to form a well-defined two-dimensional array. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) allowed the measurement of the topographic heights of the multidecker porphyrin complexes and visualization of their internal structures clearly. The STM images suggest that the top porphyrin ligand in CeDDP rarely rotates under nondestructive imaging condition, while the top porphyrin ligand in LaTDP exhibits flip-flop rotation even under the nondestructive imaging condition at sub-pA tunneling currents. These results provide the future applications of molecular-scale mechanical machines and single molecule storage memory.
