Mechanically Adaptive Polymers Constructed from Dynamic Coordination Equilibria

Designing materials capable of adapting their mechanical properties in response to external stimuli is the key to preventing failure and extending their service life. However, existing mechanically adaptive polymers are hindered by limitations such as inadequate load-bearing capacity, difficulty in achieving reversible changes, high cost, and a lack of multiple responsiveness. Herein, we address these challenges using dynamic coordination bonds. A new type of mechanically adaptive material with both rate- and temperature-responsiveness was developed. Owing to the stimuli-responsiveness of the coordination equilibria, the prepared polymers, PBMBD-Fe and PBMBD-Co, exhibit mechanically adaptive properties, including temperature-sensitive strength modulation and rate-dependent impact hardening. Benefitting from the dynamic nature of the coordination bonds, the polymers exhibited impressive energy dissipation, damping capacity (loss factors of 1.15 and 2.09 at 1.0 Hz), self-healing, and 3D printing abilities, offering durable and customizable impact resistance and protective performance. The development of impact-resistant materials with comprehensive properties has potential applications in the sustainable and intelligent protection fields.

Metal-Coordinated Covalent Organic Frameworks as Advanced Bifunctional Hosts for Both Sulfur Cathodes and Lithium Anodes in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The shuttling of polysulfides on the cathode and the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites on the anode have restricted the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In this study, a metal-coordinated 3D covalent organic framework (COF) with a homogeneous distribution of nickel-bis(dithiolene) and N-rich triazine centers (namely, NiS4-TAPT) was designed and synthesized, which can serve as bifunctional hosts for both sulfur cathodes and lithium anodes in Li-S batteries. The abundant Ni centers and N-sites in NiS4-TAPT can greatly enhance the adsorption and conversion of the polysulfides. Meanwhile, the presence of Ni-bis(dithiolene) centers enables uniform Li nucleation at the Li anode, thereby suppressing the growth of Li dendrites. This work demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating catalytic and adsorption sites to optimize the chemical interactions between host materials and redox-active intermediates, potentially facilitating the rational design of metal-coordinated COF materials for high-performance secondary batteries.

Accessible Tetrathiafulvalene Moieties in a 3D Covalent Organic Framework for Enhanced Near-Infrared Photo-Thermal Conversion and Photo-Electrical Response

Redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) exhibit distinctive electrochemical and photoelectrical properties, but their prevalent two-dimensional (2D) structure with densely packed TTF moieties limits the accessibility of redox center and constrains their potential applications. To overcome this challenge, an 8-connected TTF linker (TTF-8CHO) is designed as a new building block for the construction of three-dimensional (3D) COFs. This approach led to the successful synthesis of a 3D COF with the bcu topology, designated as TTF-8CHO-COF. In comparison to its 2D counterpart employing a 4-connected TTF linker, the 3D COF design enhances access to redox sites, facilitating controlled oxidation by I2 or Au3+ to tune physical properties. When irradiated with a 0.7 W cm-2 808 nm laser, the oxidized 3D COF samples (I X - ${\mathrm{I}}_{\mathrm{X}}^{-}$ @TTF-8CHO-COF and Au NPs@TTF-8CHO-COF) demonstrated rapid temperature increases of 239.3 and 146.1 °C, respectively, which surpassed those of pristine 3D COF (65.6 °C) and the 2D COF counterpart (6.4 °C increment after I2 treatment). Furthermore, the oxidation of the 3D COF heightened its photoelectrical responsiveness under 808 nm laser irradiation. This augmentation in photothermal and photoelectrical response can be attributed to the higher concentration of TTF·+ radicals generated through the oxidation of well-exposed TTF moieties.

Mechanically Robust, Durable, and Multifunctional Hyper-Crosslinked Elastomer Based on Metal-Organic-Cluster Crosslinker: The Role of Topological Structure

Polymer materials formed by conventional metal-ligand bonds have very low branch functionality, the crosslinker of such polymer usually consists of 2-4 polymer chains and a single metal ion. Thus, these materials are weak, soft, humidity-sensitive, and unable to withstand their shape under long-term service. In this work, a new hyperbranched metal-organic cluster (MOC) crosslinker containing up to 16 vinyl groups is prepared by a straightforward coordination reaction. Compared with the current typical synthesis of metal-organic cages (MOCs) or metal-organic-polyhedra (MOP) crosslinkers with complex operations and low yield, the preparation of the MOC is simple and gram-scale. Thus, MOC can serve as a high-connectivity crosslinker to construct hyper-crosslinked polymer networks. The as-prepared elastomer exhibits mechanical robustness, creep-resistance, and humidity-stability. Besides, the elastomer possesses self-healing and recyclability at mild condition as well as fluorescence stability. These impressive comprehensive properties are proven to originate from the hyper-crosslinked topological structure and microphase-separated morphology. The MOC-driven hyper-crosslinked elastomers provide a new solution for the construction of mechanically robust, durable, and multifunctional polymers.

Highly Efficient Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia in Strong Acid Conditions with Fe2M-Trinuclear-Cluster Metal-Organic Frameworks

Nitrate-containing industrial wastewater poses a serious threat to the global food security and public health safety. As compared to the traditional microbial denitrification, electrocatalytic nitrate reduction shows better sustainability with ultrahigh energy efficiency and the production of high-value ammonia (NH3). However, nitrate-containing wastewater from most industrial processes, such as mining, metallurgy, and petrochemical engineering, is generally acidic, which contradicts the typical neutral/alkaline working conditions for both denitrifying bacteria and the state-of-the-art inorganic electrocatalysts, leading to the demand for pre-neutralization and the problematic hydrogen evaluation reaction (HER) competition and catalyst dissolution. Here, we report a series of FeM2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) trinuclear cluster metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that enable the highly efficient electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonium under strong acidic conditions with excellent stability. In pH=1 electrolyte, the Fe2Co-MOF demonstrates the NH3 yield rate of 20653.5 μg·h-1·mg-1site with 90.55% NH3-Faradaic efficiency (FE), 98.5% NH3-selectivity and up to 75 hr of electrocatalytic stability. Additionally, successful nitrate reduction in high-acidic conditions directly produce the ammonium sulfate as nitrogen fertilizer, avoiding the subsequent aqueous ammonia extraction and preventing the ammonia spillage loss. This cluster-based MOF structure provide new insights into the design principles of high-performance nitrate reduction catalysts under environmentally-relevant wastewater conditions.

Coordination-Modulated Metal Tetrathiafulvalene Octacarboxylate Frameworks for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Modulation of the ligands and coordination environment of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been an effective and relatively unexplored avenue for improving the anode performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, three MOFs are synthesized, namely, M4(o-TTFOB)(bpm)2(H2O)2 (where M is Mn, Zn, and Cd; o-H8TTFOB is ortho-tetrathiafulvalene octabenzoate; and bpm is 2,2'-bipyrimidine), based on a new ligand o-H8TTFOB with two adjacent carboxylates on one phenyl, which allows us to establish the impact of metal coordination on the performance of these MOFs as anode materials in LIBs. Mn-o-TTFOB and Zn-o-TTFOB, with two more uncoordinated oxygen atoms from o-TTFOB8-, show higher reversible specific capacities of 1249 mAh g-1 and 1288 mAh g-1 under 200 mA g-1 after full activation. In contrast, Cd-o-TTFOB shows a reversible capacity of 448 mAh g-1 under the same condition due to the lack of uncoordinated oxygen atoms. Crystal structure analysis, cyclic voltammetry measurements of the half-cell configurations, and density functional theory calculations have been performed to explain the lithium storage mechanism, diffusion kinetics, and structure-function relationship. This study demonstrates the advantages of MOFs with high designability in the fabrication of LIBs.

Dynamic Bond-Directed Synthesis of Stable Mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks under Room Temperature

Stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with mesopores (2-50 nm) are promising platforms for immobilizing nanosized functional compounds, such as metal-oxo clusters, metal-sulfide quantum dots, and coordination complexes. However, these species easily decompose under acidic conditions or high temperatures, hindering their in situ encapsulation in stable MOFs, which are usually synthesized under harsh conditions involving excess acid modulators and high temperatures. Herein, we report a route for the room-temperature and acid-modulator-free synthesis of stable mesoporous MOFs and MOF catalysts with acid-sensitive species encapsulated: (1) we initially construct a MOF template by connecting stable Zr₆ clusters with labile Cu-bipyridyl moieties; (2) Cu-bipyridyl moieties are subsequently exchanged by organic linkers to afford a stable version of Zr-MOFs; (3) acid-sensitive species, including polyoxometalates (POMs), CdSeS/ZnS quantum dots, and Cu-coordination cages, can be encapsulated in situ into the MOFs during step 1. The room-temperature synthesis allows the isolation of mesoporous MOFs with 8-connected Zr₆ clusters and reo topology as kinetic products, which are inaccessible by traditional solvothermal synthesis. Furthermore, acid-sensitive species remain stable, active, and locked within the frameworks during MOF synthesis. We observed high catalytic activity for VX degradation by the POM@Zr-MOF catalysts as a result of the synergy between redox-active POMs and Lewis-acidic Zr sites. The dynamic bond-directed method will accelerate the discovery of large-pore stable MOFs and offer a mild route to avoid the decomposition of catalysts during MOF synthesis.

Integrating Tetrathiafulvalene and Nickel-Bis(dithiolene) Units into Donor-Acceptor Covalent Organic Frameworks for Stable and Efficient Photothermal Conversion

Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and Ni-bis(dithiolene) are typical conductive units widely studied in electronics, optics, and photochemistry. However, their applications in near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion are often limited by insufficient NIR absorption and low chemical/thermal stability. Herein, we integrate TTF and Ni-bis(dithiolene) into a covalent organic framework (COF) with stable and efficient NIR and solar photothermal conversion performance. Two isostructural COFs, namely Ni-TTF and TTF-TTF, are successfully isolated which are composed of TTF and Ni-bis(dithiolene) units as donor-acceptor (D-A) pairs or TTF units only. Both COFs show high BET surface areas and good chemical/thermal stability. Notably, compared with TTF-TTF, the periodic D-A arrangement in Ni-TTF significantly lowers the bandgap, leading to unprecedented NIR and solar photothermal conversion performance.

[Revision rate of periprosthetic joint infection post total hip or knee arthroplasty of 34 hospitals in China between 2015 and 2017: a multi-center survey]

Objective: To investigate the rate of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) revision surgeries and clinical information of hip-/knee- PJI cases nationwide from 2015 to 2017 in China. Methods: An epidemiological investigation. A self-designed questionnaire and convenience sampling were used to survey 41 regional joint replacement centers nationwide from November 2018 to December 2019 in China. The PJI was diagnosed according to the Musculoskeletal Infection Association criteria. Data of PJI patients were obtained by searching the inpatient database of each hospital. Questionnaire entries were extracted from the clinical records by specialist. Then the differences in rate of PJI revision surgery between hip- and knee- PJI revision cases were calculated and compared. Results: Total of 36 hospitals (87.8%) nationwide reported data on 99 791 hip and knee arthroplasties performed from 2015 to 2017, with 946 revisions due to PJI (0.96%). The overall hip-PJI revision rate was 0.99% (481/48 574), and it was 0.97% (135/13 963), 0.97% (153/15 730) and 1.07% (193/17 881) in of 2015, 2016, 2017, respectively. The overall knee-PJI revision rate was 0.91% (465/51 271), and it was 0.90% (131/14 650), 0.88% (155/17 693) and 0.94% (179/18 982) in 2015, 2016, 2017, respectively. Heilongjiang (2.2%, 40/1 805), Fujian (2.2%, 45/2 017), Jiangsu (2.1%, 85/3 899), Gansu (2.1%, 29/1 377), Chongqing (1.8%, 64/3 523) reported relatively high revision rates. Conclusions: The overall PJI revision rate in 34 hospitals nationwide from 2015 to 2017 is 0.96%. The hip-PJI revision rate is slightly higher than that in the knee-PJI. There are differences in revision rates among hospitals in different regions.

Tough, Reprocessable and Recyclable Dynamic Covalent Polymers with Ultrastable Long-Lived Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) polymers, whose emission can persist for a long period after photoexcitation, are of great importance in practical applications. Herein, dynamic covalent boronic ester linkages with internal B-N coordination are incorporated into commercial epoxy matrix. The reversible dissociation of B-N bonds upon loading provides an efficient energy dissipation pathway for the epoxy network, while the rigid epoxy matrix can inhibit the quenching of triplet excitons in boronic esters. The obtained polymers exhibit enhanced mechanical toughness (12.26 MJ m-3), ultralong RTP (τ = 540.4 ms) and shape memory behavior. Notably, the RTP property shows no obvious decrease upon prolonged immersion in various solvents due to the robust networks. Moreover, the dynamic bonds endow the polymers with superior reprocessablity and recyclability. Based on these novel properties, their potential applications for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting were demonstrated.

Redox-Active Mixed-Linker Metal-Organic Frameworks with Switchable Semiconductive Characteristics for Tailorable Chemiresistive Sensing

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with diverse metal nodes and designable organic linkers, offer unique opportunities for the rational engineering of semiconducting properties. In this work, we report a mixed-linker conductive MOF system with both tetrathiafulvalene and Ni-bis(dithiolene) moieties, which allows the fine-tuning of electronic structures and semiconductive characteristics. By continuously increasing the molar ratio between tetrathiafulvalene and Ni-bis(dithiolene), the switching of the semiconducting behaviors from n-type to p-type was observed along with an increase in electrical conductivity by 3 orders of magnitude (from 2.88×10^-7  S m^-1 to 9.26×10^-5  S m^-1 ). Furthermore, mixed-linker MOFs were applied for the chemiresistive detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), where the sensing performance was modulated by the corresponding linker ratios, showing synergistic and nonlinear modulation effects.

Covalent organic frameworks with Ni-Bis(dithiolene) and Co-porphyrin units as bifunctional catalysts for Li-O2 batteries

The rational design of efficient and stable catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is the key to improving Li-O₂ battery performance. Here, we report the construction of ORR/OER bifunctional cathode catalysts in a covalent organic framework (COF) platform by simultaneously incorporating Ni-bis(dithiolene) and Co-porphyrin units. The resulting bimetallic Ni/Co-COF exhibits high surface area, fairly good electrical conductivity, and excellent chemical stability. Li-O₂ batteries with the Ni/Co-COF-based cathode show a low discharge/charge potential gap (1.0 V) and stable cycling (200 cycles) at a current density of 500 mA g^-1, rivaling that of PtAu nanocrystals. Density functional theory computations and control experiments using nonmetal or single metal-based isostructural COFs reveal the critical role of Ni and Co sites in reducing the discharge/charge overpotentials and regulating the Li₂O₂ deposition. This work highlights the advantage of bimetallic COFs in the rational design of efficient and stable Li-O₂ batteries.

Planar Chiral Multiple Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials for Efficient Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence

Chiral boron/nitrogen doped multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters are promising for highly efficient and color-pure circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Herein, we report two pairs of MR-TADF materials (Czp-tBuCzB, Czp-POAB) based on planar chiral paracyclophane with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 98 %. The enantiomers showed symmetric circularly polarized photoluminescence spectra with dissymmetry factors |g_PL | of up to 1.6×10^-3 in doped films. Meanwhile, the sky-blue CP-OLEDs with (R/S)-Czp-tBuCzB showed an external quantum efficiency of 32.1 % with the narrowest full-width at half-maximum of 24 nm among the reported CP-OLEDs, while the devices with (R/S)-Czp-POAB displayed the first nearly pure green CP electroluminescence with |g_EL | factors at the 10^-3 level. These results demonstrate the incorporation of planar chirality into MR-TADF emitter is a reliable strategy for constructing of efficient CP-OLEDs.

Atomically Precise Integration of Multiple Functional Motifs in Catalytic Metal-Organic Frameworks for Highly Efficient Nitrate Electroreduction

Ammonia production plays a central role in modern industry and agriculture with a continuous surge in its demand, yet the current industrial Haber-Bosch process suffers from low energy efficiency and accounts for high carbon emissions. Direct electrochemical conversion of nitrate to ammonia therefore emerges as an appealing approach with satisfactory sustainability while reducing the environmental impact from nitrate pollution. To this end, electrocatalysts for efficient conversion of eight-electron nitrate to ammonia require collective contributions at least from high-density reactive sites, selective reaction pathways, efficient multielectron transfer, and multiproton transport processes. Here, we report a catalytic metal-organic framework (two-dimensional (2D) In-MOF In8) catalyst integrated with multiple functional motifs with atomic precision, including uniformly dispersed, high-density, single-atom catalytic sites, high proton conductivity (efficient proton transport channel), high electron conductivity (promoted by the redox-active ligands), and confined microporous environments. These eventually lead to a direct and efficient electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia and record high yield rate, FE, and selectivity for NH₃ production. A novel "dynamic ligand dissociation" mechanism provides an unprecedented working principle that allows for the use of a high-quality MOF crystalline structure to function as highly ordered, high-density, single-atom catalyst (SAC)-like catalytic systems and ensures the maximum utilization of the metal centers within the MOF structure. Further, the atomically precise assembly of multiple functional motifs within a MOF catalyst offers an effective and facile strategy for the future development of framework-based enzyme-mimic systems.

A Chiral Dual-Core Organoboron Structure Realizes Dual-Channel Enhanced Ultrapure Blue Emission and Highly Efficient Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence

The realization of luminescent materials with narrowband and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is of great significance for the development of future optical and photonic devices. Herein, through a steric-hindrance-assisted dual-core strategy, two pairs of chiral dual-core multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials (R/S-DOBN and R/S-DOBNT) are directly constructed by the bonding of two organoboron MR-TADF monocores (SOBN and SOBNT) with carbazole/3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazole and phenol derivative as donors, realizing obvious CPL and narrowband emissions. Furthermore, the dual-core effect in the prepared R/S-DOBN and R/S-DOBNT increases the transition oscillator strength two times more than that of a monocore structure, while maintaining the ultrapure blue emissions peaking at 453 and 459 nm with a narrower full-width at half-maximum of 21 nm through reorganization energy reduction. The circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes based on the enantiomers exhibit ultrapure blue emission with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.14, 0.10) and (0.13, 0.12), high maximum external quantum efficiencies of 23.9% and 25.6%, and obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence with dissymmetry factors (|g_EL |) ≈ 10^-3 .

Circularly Polarized White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Spiro-Type Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials

In this study, we report the first circularly polarized white organic light-emitting diodes (CP-WOLEDs) based on all thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Two pairs of spiro-type TADF enantiomers, (R/S)-SPOCN (5,5'-((2,2',3,3'-tetrahydro-1,1'-spirobi[indene]-7,7'-diyl)bis(oxy))bis(4-(10H-phenoxazin-10-yl)phthalonitrile)) and (R/S)-OSFSO (2'-(trifluoromethyl)-spiro[quinolino[3,2,1-kl]phenoxazine-9,9'-thioxanthene]-10',10'-dioxide), serve as emitters with complementary emission. The CP-OLEDs exhibit warm white emission with a CIE coordinate of (0.35, 0.46). Besides, decent device performances are observed with an external quantum efficiency of up to 21.6 % at maximum and 11.8 % at 1000 cd m^-2 . Obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals are detected with a dissymmetry factor |g_EL | of around 3.0×10^-3 . This is the first report of CP-WOLEDs that can harvest both singlet and triplet excitons, which provides a feasible strategy for the development of CP-WOLEDs with remarkable device performances.

Redox-Active Covalent Organic Frameworks with Nickel-Bis(dithiolene) Units as Guiding Layers for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Combining the chemistry of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can bring new opportunities for the design of advanced materials with enhanced tunability and functionality. Herein, we constructed two COFs based on Ni-bis(dithiolene) units and imine bonds, representing a bridge between traditional MOFs and COFs. The Ni-bis(dithiolene)tetrabenzaldehyde as the 4-connected linker was initially synthesized, which was further linked by 4-connected tetra(aminophenyl)pyrene (TAP) or 3-connected tris(aminophenyl)amine (TAA) linkers into two COFs, namely, Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA. Ni-TAP shows a two-dimensional sql network, while TAA is a twofold interpenetrated framework with an ffc topology. They both exhibit a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (324 and 689 m² g^-1 for Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA, respectively), a fairly good conductivity (1.57 × 10^-6 and 9.75 × 10^-5 S m^-1 for Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA, respectively), and high chemical stability (a stable pH window of 1-14 for Ni-TAA). When applied in lithium metal batteries as an intermediate layer for guiding the uniform Li electrodeposition, Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA displayed impressive lithiophilicity and high Li-ion conductivity, enabling the achievement of smooth and dense Li deposition with a clear columnar morphology and stable Li plating/stripping behaviors with high Li utilization, which is anticipated to pave the way to upgrade Li metal anodes for application in high-energy-density battery systems.

Interfacial Reduction Nucleation of Noble Metal Nanodots on Redox-Active Metal-Organic Frameworks for High-Efficiency Electrocatalytic Conversion of Nitrate to Ammonia

Electrochemically converting nitrate to ammonia is a promising route to realize artificial nitrogen recycling. However, developing highly efficient electrocatalysts is an ongoing challenge. Herein, we report the construction of stable and redox-active zirconium metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) based on Zr₆ nanoclusters and redox-reversible tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives as inorganic nodes and organic linkers, respectively. The redox-active Zr-MOF can facilitate the in situ reduction of noble metal precursors free of external reductants and realize the uniform nucleation of noble metal nanodots (NDs) on Zr-MOF, achieving the preparation of M-NDs/Zr-MOF (M = Pd, Ag, or Au). The highly porous Zr-MOF with good conductivity can facilitate the mass transfer process. Among the M-NDs/Zr-MOF catalysts, Pd-NDs/Zr-MOF exhibits the highest electrocatalytic activity, delivering a NH₃ yield of 287.31 mmol·h^-1·g^-1_cat. and a Faradaic efficiency of 58.1%. The proposed interfacial reduction nucleation strategy for anchoring M NDs on Zr-MOFs can be applied to other challenging energy conversion reactions.

A Tetrathiafulvalene/Naphthalene Diimide-Containing Metal-Organic Framework with fsc Topology for Highly Efficient Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide broad prospects for the development of new photothermal conversion materials, while their design and synthesis remain challenging. A new Zn-MOF (1) containing both tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) as an electron donor and naphthalene diimide (NDI) as an electron acceptor was constructed by using a space limiting effect. The material exhibited wide absorption peaks in the near-infrared region, indicating that there was strong charge transfer interaction between the TTF and NDI units and providing the possibility of photothermal conversion. 1 shows efficient near-infrared photothermal conversion performance. Under 808 nm laser (0.4 W cm^-2) illumination, the temperature of 1 increased rapidly from room temperature to 250 °C, with good thermal stability and cycle durability. This work provides an efficient strategy for promising materials in photothermal therapy.

Enhancing the photothermal conversion of tetrathiafulvalene-based MOFs by redox doping and plasmon resonance

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal materials hold great promise for use in several applications, particularly in photothermal therapy, diagnosis, and imaging. However, current NIR responsive materials often show narrow absorption bands and low absorption efficiency, and have long response times. Herein, we demonstrate that the NIR absorption of tetrathiafulvalene-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be tuned by redox doping and using plasmonic nanoparticles. In this work, a MOF containing redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units and Dy-carboxylate chains was constructed, Dy-m-TTFTB. The NIR absorption of the as-synthesized Dy-m-TTFTB was further enhanced by Ag⁺ or I₂ oxidation, transforming the neutral TTF into a TTF˙⁺ radical state. Interestingly, treatment with Ag⁺ not only generated TTF˙⁺ radicals, but it also formed Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in situ within the MOF pores. With both TTF˙⁺ radicals and Ag NPs, Ag NPs@Dy-m-TTFTB was shown to exhibit a wide range of absorption wavelengths (200–1000 nm) and also a high NIR photothermal conversion. When the system was irradiated with an 808 nm laser (energy power of 0.7 W cm⁻²), Ag NPs@Dy-m-TTFTB showed a sharp temperature increase of 239.8 °C. This increase was higher than that of pristine Dy-m-TTFTB (90.1 °C) or I₂ treated I₃⁻@Dy-m-TTFTB (213.0 °C).

The photo-response of the redox-active metal–organic framework has been systematically tuned by incorporating plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and tetrathiafulvalene radicals, resulting in efficient near-infrared photothermal conversion materials.

Organic Long Persistent Luminescence Through In Situ Generation of Cuprous(I) Ion Pairs in Ionic Solids

Recent development of most organic long persistent luminescence (OLPL) systems employed binary or tertiary doping. However, the design strategies towards OLPL materials with hour-long afterglow duration are still quite limited. Here, we propose a novel OLPL system through melt-casting method with 0.1 mol % of Cu^I complexes: 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl BINAP-CuX (X=Cl, Br and I) doped into the triphenylphosphine (TPP) host. The charge separation was initiated prior to excitation through host coordination with Cu^I complexes, resulting in semi-free halogen ions and in situ generated Cu^I cations, which forms TPP + BINAP-CuX ionic pairs and subsequently ionic solids. The OLPL lifetime can be readily modulated by different halogen atoms and the afterglow can last up to more than 3 hours perceivable to human eyes. This is a rare example of OLPL initiated through host-guest coordination that could potentially expand the definition of OLPL systems and design strategies.

Coordination-bond-directed synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks from metal-organic frameworks as templates

Controlled synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) remains challenging, because the self-assembly of ligands is not only directed by weak hydrogen bonds, but also affected by other competing van der Waals forces. Herein, we demonstrate the coordination-bond-directed synthesis of HOFs using a preformed metal-organic framework (MOF) as the template. A MOF (CuI-TTFTB) based on two-coordinated CuI centers and tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate (TTFTB) ligands was initially synthesized. CuI-TTFTB was subsequently oxidized to the intermediate (CuII-TTFTB) and hydrated to the HOF product (TTFTB-HOF). Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation was realized throughout the MOF-to-HOF transformation so that the evolution of structures was directly observed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The oxidation and hydration of the CuI center are critical to breaking the Cu-carboxylate bonds, while the synergic corbelled S⋯S and π⋯π interactions in the framework ensured stability of materials during post-synthetic modification. This work not only provided a strategy to guide the design and discovery of new HOFs, but also linked the research of MOFs and HOFs.

In(III) Metal-Organic Framework Incorporated with Enzyme-Mimicking Nickel Bis(dithiolene) Ligand for Highly Selective CO2 Electroreduction

Inspired by the exciting physical/chemical properties in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of the redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) ligands, nickel bis(dithiolene-dibenzoic acid), [Ni(C₂S₂(C₆H₄COOH)₂)₂], has been designed and developed as an inorganic analogue of the corresponding TTF-type donors (such as tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate, TTFTB), where a metal site (Ni) replaces the central C═C bond. In this work, [Ni(C₂S₂(C₆H₄COOH)₂)₂] and In³⁺ have been successfully assembled into a three-dimensional MOF, (Me₂NH₂⁺){In^III-[Ni(C₂S₂(C₆H₄COO)₂)₂]}·3DMF·1.5H₂O (1, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), with satisfying chemical and thermal stabilities. With the combination of reversible redox activity and unsaturated metal sites originated from [Ni(C₂S₂(C₆H₄COOH)₂)₂], 1 showed a significantly enhanced performance in electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction compared with the isomorphic MOF, (Me₂NH₂⁺)[In^III-(TTFTB)]·0.7C₂H₅OH·DMF (2, with TTFTB ligand). More importantly, by mimicking the active [NiS₄] sites of formate dehydrogenase and CO-dehydrogenase, a prominently higher conversion rate and Faradaic efficiency (FE), with FE_HCOO^- increasing from 54.7% to 89.6% (at -1.3 V vs RHE, j_HCOO^- = 36.0 mA cm^-2), were achieved in 1. Mechanistic investigations further confirm that [NiS₄] can serve as a CO₂ binding site and efficient catalytic center. This unprecedented effect of redox-active nickel dithiolene-based MOF catalysts on the performance of electroreduction of CO₂ provides an important strategy for designing stable and efficient crystalline enzyme-mimicking catalysts for the conversion of CO₂ into high-value chemical stocks.

Two-Photon Ionization Induced Stable White Organic Long Persistent Luminescence

Organic long persistent luminescence (OLPL) materials with afterglow duration in the scale of minutes or even hours are still rare. Most OLPL systems are based on exciplexes, which require complicated multi-component system in order to realize white afterglow but with slightly compromised duration and color stability. In this work, OLPLs lasting from 20 to 40 minutes are realized in a simple binary system based on two-photon ionization mechanism, which can simultaneously harvest excitons from both singlet and triplet excited states, making it potentially one of the most promising candidates to achieve stable white OLPL. Through modulation and optimization of dopant molecules in dibenzo[b,d]thiophen-2-yldiphenyl phosphine oxide host, the emission profiles of afterglow can be readily tuned from cyan (0.19, 0.22), cold white (0.31, 0.35), standard white (0.33, 0.33) to warm white (0.31, 0.46), with excellent color consistency.

Retention of a Four-Fold Interpenetrating Cadmium-Organic Framework through a Three-Step Single Crystal Transformation

Controlled hydration leads to four derivatives of a metal-organic framework consisting of cadmium ions, N¹,N¹,N⁴,N⁴-tetrakis(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)benzene-1,4-diamine, and coordinated and free nitrates. The balance of water coordination and the multitude of bonding of the weakly coordinated nitrate lead to a progressive change in the coordination number of the Cd²⁺ ions from eight to seven to six without great perturbation to the 4-fold interpenetration three-dimensional framework.

High-Performance Lithium-Ion Capacitors Based on Porosity-Regulated Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks

Comprised of a battery anode and a supercapacitor cathode, hybrid lithium-ion capacitors (HLICs) are found to be an effective solution to realize both high power density and high energy density at the same time. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials with well-organized framework guided by the reticular chemistry are one of the promising anode materials for HLICs because of rich active sites and ordered porosity. Herein, metal-organic framework consisting of Zr⁴⁺ metal ions and tetrathiafulvalene-based ligands (Zr-MOF) is proposed as the pseudocapacitive anode of HLICs. The Zr-MOF possesses high stability, high crystallinity, and multiple meso-microporous channels favorable for ion transport. The as-prepared Zr-MOF||activated carbon HLICs present high energy density (122.5 Wh kg^-1 ), high power density (12.5 kW kg^-1 ), and stable cycling performance (86% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2000 mA g^-1 ) within the operating voltage range of 1.0-4.0 V. The results expand the direct application of MOF for bridging the performance gap between batteries and supercapacitors.

Charge Transfer Metal-Organic Framework Containing Redox-Active TTF/NDI Units for Highly Efficient Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a class of new inorganic-organic hybrid crystal materials, could have important applications in near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion. Herein, a new charge-transfer MOF (Co-MOF) with mixed ligands of H₄ TTFTB and bpmNDI incorporating redox-active tetrathiafulvalene/naphthalene diimide (TTF/NDI) units into one system is reported. Due to the presence of TTF/NDI oxidative and reductive couples, stable radicals can be observed in the MOF. In addition, charge transfer from the electron donor (TTF) to the acceptor (NDI) results in a broad absorption in the NIR region. The Co-MOF exhibited an efficient photothermal effect induced by irradiation with a NIR laser. Under the 808 nm laser (0.7 W cm^-2 ) illumination, the temperature of the Co-MOF increased from room temperature to 201 °C in only 10 s. Furthermore, a series of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films doped with trace amounts of Co-MOF showed efficient NIR photothermal conversion. When a Co-MOF@PDMS (0.6 wt %) film is irradiated by 808 nm laser with power of 0.5 W cm^-2 , it's temperature can reach a plateau at 62 °C from 20 °C within 100 s. Our experimental results from the Co-MOF@PDMS film demonstrate that the effectiveness and feasibility of the material is promising for photothermal applications.

Chiral Spiro-Axis Induced Blue Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Material for Efficient Circularly Polarized OLEDs with Low Efficiency Roll-Off

A spiro-axis skeleton not only introduces circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) into thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules but also enhances the intramolecular through space charge transfer (TSCT) process. Spiral distributed phenoxazine and 2-(trifluoromethyl)-9H-thioxanthen-9-one-10,10-dioxide act as donor and acceptor units, respectively. The resulting TADF enantiomers, (rac)-OSFSO, display emission maxima at 470 nm, small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_ST ) of 0.022 eV and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 81.2 % in co-doped film. The circularly polarized OLEDs (CP-OLEDs) based on (R)-OSFSO and (S)-OSFSO display obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) signals with dissymmetry factor up to 3.0×10^-3 and maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE_max ) of 20.0 %. Moreover, the devices show remarkably low efficiency roll-off with an EQE of 19.3 % at 1000 cd m^-2 (roll-off ca. 3.5 %), which are among the top results of CP-OLEDs.

Rare-Earth Metal Tetrathiafulvalene Carboxylate Frameworks as Redox-Switchable Single-Molecule Magnets

Using the redox-active tetrathiafulvalene tetrabenzoate (TTFTB^4- ) as the linker, a series of stable and porous rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs), [RE₉ (μ₃ -OH)₁₃ (μ₃ -O)(H₂ O)₉ (TTFTB)₃ ] (1-RE, where RE=Y, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) were constructed. The RE₉ (μ₃ -OH)₁₃ (μ₃ -O) (H₂ O)₉ ](CO₂ )₁₂ clusters within 1-RE act as segregated single-molecule magnets (SMMs) displaying slow relaxation. Interestingly, upon oxidation by I₂ , the S=0 TTFTB^4- linkers of 1-RE were converted into S= 1 / 2 TTFTB^.3- radical linkers which introduced exchange-coupling between SMMs and modulated the relaxation. Furthermore, the SMM property can be restored by reduction in N,N-dimethylformamide. These results highlight the advantage of MOFs in the construction of redox-switchable SMMs.

A Metal-Organic Framework Based on a Nickel Bis(dithiolene) Connector: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Application as an Electrochemical Glucose Sensor

Functionalizing the redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) core with groups capable of coordination to metals provides new perspectives on the modulation of architectures and electronic properties of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. With a view to extending this concept, we have now synthesized nickel bis(dithiolene-dibenzoic acid), [Ni(C2S2(C6H4COOH)2)2], which can be considered as the inorganic analogue of the organic tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoic acid (H4TTFTB). Likewise, [Ni(C2S2(C6H4COOH)2)2] is a redox-active linker for new functional metal-organic frameworks, as demonstrated here with the synthesis of [Mn2{Ni(C2S2(C6H4COO)2)2}(H2O)2]·2DMF, (1, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide). 1 is isomorphic to the reported [Mn2(TTFTB)(H2O)2] (2) but is a better electrochemical glucose sensor due to the multiple oxidation-reduction states of the [NiS4] core, which allow glucose to be oxidized to glucolactone by the high oxidation state [NiS4] center. As a non-enzymatic glucose sensor, 1 on Cu foam (CF), 1-CF, was synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method and exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance. The fabricated 1-CF electrode offers a high sensitivity of 27.9 A M-1 cm-2, with a wide linear detection range from 2.0 × 10-6 to 2.0 × 10-3 M, a low detection limit of 1.0 × 10-7 M (signal/noise = 3), and satisfactory stability and reproducibility.

Electrochromic two-dimensional covalent organic framework with a reversible dark-to-transparent switch

Electrochromic (EC) materials with a dark-to-transmissive switch have great applications in optical communications, infrared wavelength detectors for spacecraft, and infrared camouflage coatings. However, such electroactive materials with high stability and cyclability are rare. Considering the advantages of the donor-acceptor approach (wide-range tuneable band position) and porous two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF, well-ordered crystalline framework with stable structure and high surface area), in this work we constructed an extended delocalised π-electron layered dark purple EC-COF-1 by reacting the donor N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(p-aminophenyl)-p-benzenediamine (TPBD) with the acceptor 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4,7-dicarboxaldehyde (BTDD). A sandwiched device made of EC-COF-1 exhibits the two-band bleaching (370 nm and 574 nm) in the visible region and becomes transparent under the applied potential with an induced absorption centring at 1400 nm. This discovery of a stable dark-to-transmissive switch in COF might open another door for their application in many EC devices for various purposes.

A Dielectric Elastomer Actuator That Can Self-Heal Integrally

Dielectric actuators are prone to be worn or partially damaged when operating at high electric fields. The introduction of self-healing features into dielectric actuators is favorable for extending its life span and security. Although many attempts have been made to produce self-healing dielectric actuators, most of them focus on the healing of either the electrodes or the dielectric layers. A dielectric actuator that exhibits integral self-healing is still unprecedented. Meanwhile, realizing integral self-healing in dielectric actuator is highly challenging because both the electrode and the dielectric layer need to be healed while the interface between the electrode and the dielectric layer should remain unaffected during the healing process. In this paper, we synthesized self-healing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymers containing different amounts of polyaniline (PANI) (denoted as PDMS-PANI_n, where n represents the weight percentage of PANI) as the dielectric layer and electrode, respectively. PDMS-PANI_2.5 polymer exhibits good dielectric properties (ε = 11.11 at 50 Hz) and was used as the dielectric layer, while PDMS-PANI₂₀ polymer having a high conductivity of 4.5 × 10^-5 S/cm was used as the electrode. As both of them have excellent self-healing ability and are compatible and diffusible to each other, the entire actuator device can still cause actuated strain after cutting and healing at room temperature for 48 h. Our strategy for realizing integral self-healing of actuator is also applicable to other electronic devices.

Self-Healing Polymers Based on Coordination Bonds

Self-healing ability is an important survival feature in nature, with which living beings can spontaneously repair damage when wounded. Inspired by nature, people have designed and synthesized many self-healing materials by encapsulating healing agents or incorporating reversible covalent bonds or noncovalent interactions into a polymer matrix. Among the noncovalent interactions, the coordination bond is demonstrated to be effective for constructing highly efficient self-healing polymers. Moreover, with the presence of functional metal ions or ligands and dynamic metal-ligand bonds, self-healing polymers can show various functions such as dielectrics, luminescence, magnetism, catalysis, stimuli-responsiveness, and shape-memory behavior. Herein, the recent developments and achievements made in the field of self-healing polymers based on coordination bonds are presented. The advantages of coordination bonds in constructing self-healing polymers are highlighted, the various metal-ligand bonds being utilized in self-healing polymers are summarized, and examples of functional self-healing polymers originating from metal-ligand interactions are given. Finally, a perspective is included addressing the promises and challenges for the future development of self-healing polymers based on coordination bonds.

Rational Design of the Platinahelicene Enantiomers for Deep-Red Circularly Polarized Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

[n]Helicene derivatives are most popular chiral structures to construct luminescent materials with circularly polarized (CP) light, which have revealed appealing application in chiral optoelectronics. Particularly, because of the unique phosphorescent emission, platinahelicene has great application prospects in CP organic light-emitting diode (CP-OLED). Herein, by decorating the pyridinyl-helicene ligand with trifluoromethyl (-CF₃) unit in a specific position, a pair of platinahelicene enantiomers was prepared and separated with extremely twisted structure showing not only superior thermal and configurational stability but also good CP luminescence (CPL) property with dissymmetry factors (|g_PL|) of 6 × 10⁻³. Moreover, the evaporated CP-OLEDs based on platinahelicene enantiomers exhibited the deep-red emission with the peak at 653 nm as well as obvious CP electroluminescence (CPEL) signals with the |g_EL| in 10⁻³ order. Therefore, the design strategy provides an efficient way to improve the CPL properties of platinahelicene to cope with the future application in CP-OLEDs.

Enhanced dielectricity coupled to spin-crossover in a one-dimensional polymer iron(ii) incorporating tetrathiafulvalene

A concerted bending–flattening motion of the redox-active TTF within constructed one-dimensional Fe^II–TTF–Schiff-base chain with bridging 4,4′-bpy enhances the dielectric constant coupled to its spin-crossover transition above room temperature.

In designing multifunctional materials for potential switches that can be used as memory devices, the high-spin (HS) to low-spin (LS) crossover (SCO) one-dimensional polymer, [Fe^II(L)(4,4′-bpy)]_n, was constructed from a designed redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) functionalized Schiff-base and the ditopic linker 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy). It exhibits an 8 K hysteretic SCO centred at T_1/2 = 325 K which is coupled to changes in its dielectric constant. The crystal structures above and below the transition temperature reveal similar parallel linear ···Fe–bpy–Fe–bpy··· chains displaying expansion of the Fe^II octahedron in the HS state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a concerted electronic charge and spin change represented by the Mülliken charge of the Fe and the magnitude and direction of the dipole moment which substantiate the experimental observations.

Multicolor Circularly Polarized Photoluminescence and Electroluminescence with 1,2-Diaminecyclohexane Enantiomers

Development of simple chiral materials with tunable circularly polarized photoluminescence (CPPL) and circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) for efficient circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) is the key toward future 3D displays. In this study, four pairs of chiral 1,2-diaminocyclohexane-based fluorescence enantiomers were efficiently prepared with high yields (up to 92%) and enantiomeric excesses (ee >99%). By the introduction of N-methyl, carbazole, and diphenylamine-donating groups, these materials showed multicolor CPPL and CPEL from blue (420 nm) to red (610 nm) with good thermal and conformational stability. The multilayer CP-OLEDs based on these enantiomers show high external quantum efficiency of up to 5.5% with low-efficiency roll-off and microimage circularly polarized electroluminescence with a dissymmetry factor (g_EL) of up to -1.4 × 10^-3/+1.3 × 10^-3. These results push forward the development of future multicolor circularly polarized electroluminescent materials.

Zirconium metal-organic frameworks incorporating tetrathiafulvalene linkers: robust and redox-active matrices for in situ confinement of metal nanoparticles

Redox-active metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with highly ordered porous structures and redox tunability, have attracted research interest in the fields of catalysis, energy storage, and electrochemical sensing. However, the chemical lability has limited the application scope of many redox-active MOFs. Herein, we selected stable Zr₆ inorganic nodes and redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based linkers to construct two robust, redox-active MOFs, namely compounds 1 ([Zr₆(TTFTB)₂O₈(OH₂)₈]) and 2 ([Zr₆(Me-TTFTB)_1.5O₄(OH)₄(C₆H₅COO)₆]) (TTFTB = tetrathiafulvalene tetrabenzoate; Me-TTFTB = tetrathiafulvalene tetramethylbenzoate). The structure and topology of the MOFs were controlled by tuning the linker conformation through steric effects, resulting in a variety of pore structures from microporous channels (compound 1) to hierarchically micro/mesoporous cages (compound 2). Compound 2 shows high porosity with a BET surface area of 1932 m² g^-1 and strong chemical stability in aqueous solutions with pH ranging from 1 to 12. Furthermore, the reductive TTF moieties allow for in situ generation and stabilization of ultra-small noble metal (Ag, Pd, and Au) nanoparticles by incubating MOFs in the respective metal salt solution. Single crystal structures, TEM images, and pore size distribution data from N₂ adsorption measurements indicated that the metal nanoparticles were mostly placed in the small cubic cavities of hierarchically porous compound 2, leaving the large cages open for substrate diffusion. As a proof of concept, Pd NPs@compound 2 was utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst for aerobic oxidation of alcohols, showing noteworthy activity and recyclability.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fixation: Linearly Bridged Zn2 Paddlewheel Nodes by CO2 in a Metal-Organic Framework

When the reaction of zinc nitrate with 4',4‴,4‴″,4‴‴'-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrakis[(1,1'-biphenyl-3-carboxylic acid)] (H₄tmpe) in dimethylformamide (DMF) under hydrothermal condition is performed in air or carbon dioxide (CO₂), [Zn₄(tmpe)₂(H₂O)₂(μ₂-CO₂)]·8DMF·18H₂O (1) crystallizes out. However, if it is in dioxygen, argon, or carbon monoxide, [Zn₂(tmpe)(DMF)]·2DMF·8H₂O (2) is the product. Both compounds are chemically stable coordination polymers. 1 contains zinc carboxylate paddlewheels as nodes linearly bridged by CO₂ into two interpenetrating lattices, and 2 has an infinite single framework formed by a tetranuclear node. 1 is the second example containing the linear CO₂-bridged paddlewheel node. Interestingly, CO₂ fixation in a μ₂-η²_O,O bridging mode is observed in 1, which is rarely characterized structurally and has been confirmed using IR and gas chromatography analysis. The stability of 1 is further verified by density functional theory calculations, which found an energy minimum with a Zn-O═C angle of 180°. Both compounds display strong emission around 490 nm and excited-state lifetimes around 2.4 ns.

Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence with Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence Based on Paracyclophanes

Pure organic materials with intrinsic room-temperature phosphorescence typically rely on heavy atoms or heteroatoms. Two different strategies towards constructing organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) species based upon the through-space charge transfer (TSCT) unit of [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) were demonstrated. Materials with bromine atoms, PCP-BrCz and PPCP-BrCz, exhibit RTP lifetime of around 100 ms. Modulating the PCP core with non-halogen-containing electron-withdrawing units, PCP-TNTCz and PCP-PyCNCz, successfully elongate the RTP lifetime to 313.59 and 528.00 ms, respectively, the afterglow of which is visible for several seconds under ambient conditions. The PCP-TNTCz and PCP-PyCNCz enantiomers display excellent circular polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors as high as -1.2×10^-2 in toluene solutions, and decent RTP lifetime of around 300 ms for PCP-TNTCz enantiomers in crystalline state.

Chiral Octahydro-Binaphthol Compound-Based Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials for Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence with Superior EQE of 32.6% and Extremely Low Efficiency Roll-Off

Circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) are particularly favorable for the direct generation of CP light, and they demonstrate a promising application in 3D display. However, up to now, such CP devices have suffered from low brightness, insufficient efficiency, and serious efficiency roll-off. In this study, a pair of octahydro-binaphthol (OBN)-based chiral emitting enantiomers, (R/S)-OBN-Cz, are developed by ingeniously merging a chiral source and a luminophore skeleton. These chirality-acceptor-donor (C-A-D)-type and rod-like compounds concurrently generate thermally activated delayed fluorescence with a small ΔE_ST of 0.037 eV, as well as a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 92% and intense circularly polarized photoluminescence with dissymmetry factors (|g_PL |) of ≈2.0 × 10^-3 in thin films. The CP-OLEDs based on (R/S)-OBN-Cz enantiomers not only display obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with a |g_EL | of ≈2.0 × 10^-3 , but also exhibit superior efficiencies with maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE_max ) up to 32.6% and extremely low efficiency roll-off with an EQE of 30.6% at 5000 cd m^-2 , which are the best performances among the reported CP devices to date.
