Magnetic solid-phase extraction based on modified ferum oxides for enrichment, preconcentration, and isolation of pesticides and selected pollutants

Recently, a simple, rapid, high-efficiency, selective, and sensitive method for isolation, preconcentration, and enrichment of analytes has been developed. This new method of sample handling is based on ferum oxides as magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and has been used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of various analytes from various matrices. This review focuses on the applications of modified ferum oxides, especially modified Fe3O4 MNPs, as MSPE adsorbent for pesticide isolation from various matrices. Further perspectives on MSPE based on modified Fe3O4 for inorganic metal ions, organic compounds, and biological species from water samples are also presented. Ferum(III) oxide MNPs (Fe2O3) are also highlighted.

Recent advances in applications of nanomaterials for sample preparation

Sample preparation is a key step for qualitative and quantitative analysis of trace analytes in complicated matrix. Along with the rapid development of nanotechnology in material science, numerous nanomaterials have been developed with particularly useful applications in analytical chemistry. Benefitting from their high specific areas, increased surface activities, and unprecedented physical/chemical properties, the potentials of nanomaterials for rapid and efficient sample preparation have been exploited extensively. In this review, recent progress of novel nanomaterials applied in sample preparation has been summarized and discussed. Both nanoparticles and nanoporous materials are evaluated for their unusual performance in sample preparation. Various compositions and functionalizations extended the applications of nanomaterials in sample preparations, and distinct size and shape selectivity was generated from the diversified pore structures of nanoporous materials. Such great variety make nanomaterials a kind of versatile tools in sample preparation for almost all categories of analytes.

Magnetic beads as an extraction medium for simultaneous quantification of acetaminophen and structurally related compounds in human serum

This paper describes a sample preparation method that complements a previously published liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assay for acetaminophen and eight structurally-related compounds in human serum (C. Bylda, R. Thiele, U. Kobold, D.A. Volmer. Drug Test. Anal. 2014, 6, 451). The analytes (acetaminophen [APAP] + metabolites acetaminophen-glucuronide [APG], -cysteine [APC], -mercapturate [APM] and -cysteine [APC], structurally similar analogues phenacetin and p-phenetidine, as well as tricyclic antidepressants imipramine and amitryptiline) were extracted from serum using magnetized hyper-crosslinked polystyrene particles. The sample preparation protocol was developed by means of a design of experiments (DoE) statistical approach. Using three representative compounds from the analyte panel with different polarities (high, medium, and low), two screening designs were used to identify factors that exhibited significant impact on recovery of the analytes. These parameters were then optimized to permit extraction of the complete target panel exhibiting a broad range of chemical polarities. Liquid chromatographic separations were achieved by gradient elution using a pentafluorphenyl column with subsequent detection by electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The method was linear over the range 0.1-100 µg/mL for APAP, APG, p-phenetidine and phenacetin, 0.03-50 µg/mL for APS, and 0.01-10 µg/mL for APM, APC, imipramine and amitriptyline, with R(2)  > 0.99. The assay exhibited good precision with CVs ranging from 2 to 9% for all analytes; the accuracy was assessed by comparing two LC-MS/MS methods using a set of 68 patient samples.

A rhodamine-based fluorescent probe for Cu(II) determination in aqueous solution

An 'off-on' rhodamine-based fluorescence probe for the selective detection of Cu(II) has been designed, exploiting the guest-induced structure transform mechanism. This system shows a sharp Cu(II)-selective fluorescence enhancement response in an aqueous system under physiological pH, and possesses high selectivity against a background of environmentally and biologically relevant metal ions. Under optimum conditions, the fluorescence intensity enhancement of this system is linearly proportional to the Cu(II) concentration from 50 nM to 6.0 μM with a detection limit of 29 nM.

Effects of the interaction of single-walled carbon nanotubes with 4-nonylphenol on their in vitro toxicity

The aim of this study was to assess the toxicological risks arising from the coexistence of polyethylene glycol coated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs-PEG) and a known environmental contaminant: 4-nonylphenol (NP). To this end, in vitro toxicity assays involving the exposure of 3T3-L1 cells (mouse embryonic fibroblasts) to SWCNTs-PEG alone or in combination with NP for 24 or 48 h were performed. Experimental treatments were conducted in both presence (10%) and absence of serum in order to evaluate its influence on the toxicity of SWCNTs-PEG. Although the results provided no unambiguous evidences of synergistic toxicity between SWCNTs-PEG and NP, some specific treatments with mixtures (SWCNTs-PEG+NP) resulted in an unexpected combined toxicity in relation to the individual treatments. Only in those cases the interaction between SWCNTs-PEG and NP could have a synergistic effect on the resulting toxicity. The addition of 10% serum increased the stability of SWCNTs-PEG in the culture medium-possibly by steric repulsions-and reduced the toxicity of nanoparticles as a result. Overall, the serum had a "protective effect" on cells against all treatments: SWCNTs-PEG, NP or their mixtures (SWCNTs-PEG+NP). Raman spectroscopy allowed the intracellular distribution of SWCNTs-PEG to be elucidated.

Dispersive solid-phase extraction based on magnetic dummy molecularly imprinted microspheres for selective screening of phthalates in plastic bottled beverages

A new magnetic dummy molecularly imprinted dispersive solid-phase extraction (MAG-MIM-dSPE) coupled with gas chromatography-FID was developed for selective determination of phthalates in plastic bottled beverages. The new magnetic dummy molecularly imprinted microspheres (MAG-MIM) using diisononyl phthalate as a template mimic were synthesized by coprecipitation coupled with aqueous suspension polymerization and were successfully applied as the adsorbents for MAG-MIM-dSPE to extract and isolate five phthalates from plastic bottled beverages. Validation experiments showed that the MAG-MIM-dSPE method had good linearity at 0.0040-0.40 μg/mL (0.9991-0.9998), good precision (3.1-6.9%), and high recovery (89.5-101.3%), and limits of detection were obtained in a range of 0.53-1.2 μg/L. The presented MAG-MIM-dSPE method combines the quick separation of magnetic particles, special selectivity of MIM, and high extraction efficiency of dSPE, which could potentially be applied to selective screening of phthalates in beverage products.

Application of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles in sample preparation

Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles have attracted much attention in sample preparation because of their excellent performance compared with traditional sample-preparation sorbents. In this review, we describe the application of magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with silica, octadecylsilane, carbon-based material, surfactants, and polymers as adsorbents for separation and preconcentration of analytes from a variety of matrices. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) techniques, mainly reported in the last five years, are presented and discussed.

Extraction of three nitrophenols using polypyrrole-coated magnetic nanoparticles based on anion exchange process

In this research, the applicability of polypyrrole-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PPy NPs) as an anion exchange magnetic nanosorbent is demonstrated. For this purpose, three nitrophenols were selected as models which are acidic compounds with low logP values and their extraction in neutral form (only based on hydrophobic interactions) is difficult. The extracted nitrophenols were separated and determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-UV detection. The size, morphology and surface coating of synthesized Fe3O4@PPy NPs have been characterized via different techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The important parameters influencing the extraction efficiency were studied and optimized. Under the optimum extraction conditions (300mL sample solution with pH 10, extraction and desorption times of 10 and 2min, respectively, 500μL of 0.1M HNO3 in acetonitrile as eluent, and 40mg of adsorbent), a linear range between 0.75 and 100μgL(-1) (R(2)>0.997), and limits of detection ranging from 0.3 to 0.4μgL(-1) were obtained. Preconcentration factors in the range of 125-180 were achieved and relative standard deviations (RSDs%) were less than 4.9 (n=4) for the three nitrophenols. The analytical method was successfully applied for environmental water samples such as tap water, rain water and river water. The recoveries varied within the range of 84-109% confirming good performance of the method in various waters samples. The results showed that the proposed method is a rapid, convenient and feasible technique for determination of nitrophenols in aqueous samples.
