Disruption of a three-component solution as a novel strategy for Cu and Ni extraction from vegetable oils for their determination by GF AAS

In this work, we propose a novel approach for extracting Cu and Ni from vegetable oils (which can be expanded to other metals). The method is based on the transference of the analytes to an aqueous acid phase due to the disruption of a three-component solution. The extraction was carried out in two steps. In the first step, a three-component solution was prepared comprising the sample, 1-octanol, and HNO3 solution. Next, the homogeneous system was disrupted by adding 1.0 mL of deionized water, and two phases were formed. The aqueous extract deposited in the bottom of the flask was collected with a micropipette, and Cu and Ni were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF AAS). The developed method presented limits of quantification (LOQ) of 0.25 and 0.17 ng g-1 for Cu and Ni, respectively, and was successfully applied in the analysis of eleven oil samples from different origins.

Ampere-Level Current Density CO2 Reduction with High C2+ Selectivity on La(OH)3-Modified Cu Catalysts

The carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) driven by electricity can transform CO2 into high-value multi-carbon (C2+) products. Copper (Cu)-based catalysts are efficient but suffer from low C2+ selectivity at high current densities. Here La(OH)3 in Cu catalyst is introduced to modify its electronic structure towards efficient CO2RR to C2+ products at ampere-level current densities. The La(OH)3/Cu catalyst has a remarkable C2+ Faradaic efficiency (FEC2+) of 71.2% which is 2.2 times that of the pure Cu catalyst at a current density of 1,000 mA cm-2 and keeps stable for 8 h. In situ spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations both show that La(OH)3 modifies the electronic structure of Cu. This modification favors *CO adsorption, subsequent hydrogenation, *CO─*COH coupling, and consequently increases C2+ selectivity. This work provides a guidance on facilitating C2+ product formation, and suppressing hydrogen evolution by La(OH)3 modification, enabling efficient CO2RR at ampere-level current densities.

[Effect of EDDS Application on Soil Cu/Cd Availability and Uptake/transport by Castor]

To investigate the effect of chelating agents on plant uptake of heavy metals, castor (Ricinus communis L.) was used as the test plant. Soil culture and pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of different concentrations of ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS) on the forms of Cu and Cd in soil and their absorption and transport by castor. The results showed that the application of EDDS significantly increased the content of available Cu and Cd. After 15 days of cultivation, the available Cu and Cd concentrations in the soil increased by 43.01%-103.55% and 51.78%-69.43%, respectively. EDDS promoted the conversion of reducible Cu to weak acid extractable and increased the mobility of Cu. Meanwhile, the application of EDDS promoted the absorption, transport, and enrichment of Cu in castor. Under the application of 2.5 mmol·kg-1 EDDS and 5.0 mmol·kg-1 EDDS, the Cu concentrations in the shoots were 4.88 times and 16.65 times higher than that of the control (P< 0.05), and the Cu concentrations in the roots were 2.89 times and 3.60 times higher than that of the control (P< 0.05), respectively. The Cu transport coefficient significantly increased by 72.73% and 381.82% when treated with EDDS 2.5 and EDDS 5.0. Simultaneously, the phytoextraction of Cu in shoots, roots, and their sum were 14.08, 2.16, and 4.70 times higher than that of the control (P<0.05), respectively, when treated with EDDS 5.0. Furthermore, EDDS significantly increased the Cd concentrations in castor. When treated with EDDS 2.5 the shoots and roots increased by 15.15% and 57.42%, respectively, and the phytoextraction of total Cd significantly increased by 13.44%. Generally, the EDDS treatment could increase the available Cu and Cd in soil, promote the uptake of Cu and Cd, and improve the phytoremediation efficiency of castor. Among them, the addition of 5.0 mmol·kg-1 EDDS had the best effect for Cu, whereas the addition of 2.5 mmol kg-1 EDDS had a higher increase in the phytoextraction of Cd.

SEM Electron-Beam-Induced Ultrathin Carbon Deposition Layer on Cu Substrate: Improved Dry Oxidation Protection Performance than CVD Single Layer Graphene

An amorphous carbon deposition layer (CDL) with nanoscale thickness induced by scanning electron microscope (SEM) electron beam is studied as a carbon-based protective layer on copper (Cu). CDL is prepared by inducing the deposition of pollutants or hydrocarbons in the cavity of SEM through electron beam irradiation (EBI). Wrinkles and cracks will not form and the interfacial spacing of CDL/Cu is smaller than Graphene/Cu (Gr/Cu). The thickness and coverage of the interfacial oxide layer of CDL/Cu are all smaller than that of the Gr/Cu after the same oxidation conditions. Characterization of Raman mapping also demonstrates that CDL shows better oxidation inhibition effects than graphene. The structure of CDL is determined to be C = C and C = O, CH3 - and C-O can be loaded vertically on CDL. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed for demonstrating the smaller interfacial gap of CDL/Cu, less wrinkles and cracks and larger adsorbing energy of water/oxygen compared with Gr/Cu. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulation also indicates that the diffusion of water or oxygen into CDL/Cu is more difficult and the oxidation of Cu covered by CDL is well suppressed. This work provides a new approach for the study of carbon-based antioxidant materials on Cu.

Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction to C2+ Products in Flow Cells

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction into value-added fuels and chemicals by renewable electric energy is one of the important strategies to address global energy shortage and carbon emission. Though the classical H-type electrolytic cell can quickly screen high-efficiency catalysts, the low current density and limited CO2 mass transfer process essentially impede its industrial applications. The electrolytic cells based on electrolyte flow system (flow cells) have shown great potential for industrial devices, due to higher current density, improved local CO2 concentration, and better mass transfer efficiency. The design and optimization of flow cells are of great significance to further accelerate the industrialization of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR). In this review, the progress of flow cells for CO2 RR to C2+ products is concerned. Firstly, the main events in the development of the flow cells for CO2 RR are outlined. Second, the main design principles of CO2 RR to C2+ products, the architectures, and types of flow cells are summarized. Third, the main strategies for optimizing flow cells to generate C2+ products are reviewed in detail, including cathode, anode, ion exchange membrane, and electrolyte. Finally, the preliminary attempts, challenges, and the research prospects of flow cells for industrial CO2 RR toward C2+ products are discussed.

Bifunctional tissue-engineered composite construct for bone regeneration: The role of copper and fibrin

Bifunctional tissue engineering constructs promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis are essential for bone regeneration. Metal ion-incorporated scaffolds and fibrin encapsulation attract much attention due to low cost, nontoxicity, and tunable control over ion and growth factor release. Herein, we investigated the effect of Cu.nHA/Cs/Gel scaffold and fibrin encapsulation on osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation of Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJMSCs) in vitro and in vivo. Cu-laden scaffolds were synthesized using salt leaching/freeze drying and were characterized using standard techniques. WJMSCs were isolated from the human umbilical cord and characterized. WJMSCs with or without encapsulating in fibrin were seeded onto scaffolds, followed by differentiating into the osteogenic lineage for 7 and 21 days. Osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation were evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blot, and Alizarin red staining. Then, scaffolds were implanted into critical-sized calvarial bone defects in rats and histological assessments were performed using hematoxylin/eosin, Masson's trichrome, and CD31 immunohistochemical staining at 4 and 12 weeks. The scaffolds had good physicochemical and biological characteristics suitable for cell attachment and growth. Cu and fibrin increased the expression of ALP, RUNX2, OCN, COLI, VEGF, and HIF1α in differentiated WJMSCs. Implanted scaffolds were also biocompatible and were integrated well with the host tissue. Increased collagen condensation, mineralization, and blood vessel formation were observed in Cu-laden scaffolds. The fibrin-encapsulated groups showed the highest collagen and cell densities, immune cell infiltration, and bone trabeculae. CD31-positive cell population increased with fibrin encapsulation and seeding onto Cu-laden scaffolds. Adding Cu to scaffolds and encapsulating cells in fibrin are promising methods that guide osteogenesis and angiogenesis cellular signaling, leading to better bone regeneration.

Boosting the Cell Performance of the SiO/Cu and SiO/PPy Anodes via In-Situ Reduction/Oxidation Coating Strategies

Silicon monoxide (SiO) has attracted great attention due to its high theoretical specific capacity as an alternative material for conventional graphite anode, but its poor electrical conductivity and irreversible side reactions at the SiO/electrolyte interface seriously reduce its cycling stability. Here, to overcome the drawbacks, the dicharged SiO anode coated with Cu coating layer is elaborately designed by in-situ reduction method. Compared with the pristine SiO anode of lithium-ion battery (293 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 200 cycles), the obtained SiO/Cu composite presents superior cycling stability (1206 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 200 cycles). The tight combination of Cu particles and SiO significantly improves the conductivity of the composite, effectively inhibits the side-reaction between the active material and electrolyte. In addition, polypyrrole-coated SiO composites are further prepared by in-situ oxidation method, which delivers a high reversible specific capacity of 1311 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 200 cycles. The in-situ coating strategies in this work provide a new pathway for the development and practical application of high-performance silicon-based anode.

The Extract of Angelica sinensis Inhibits Hypoxia-Reoxygenation and Copper-Induced Oxidative Lesions and Apoptosis in Branchiae and Red Blood Corpuscles of Fish

The study explored the effects of Angelica sinensis extract (AsE) on oxidative lesions and apoptosis in branchiae and red blood corpuscles in hypoxia-reoxygenation (HR) and Cu-treated carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Jian). After feeding trial for 30 days, the carp were exposed to HR and CuSO4. The results indicated that dietary AsE increased the durative time, decreased the oxygen consumption rate, suppressed ROS generation and cellular component oxidation, decreased enzymatic antioxidant activity and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in red blood corpuscles and branchiae in carp under hypoxia. Moreover, dietary AsE avoided the loss of Na+,K+-ATPase, metabolic and antioxidant enzyme activities, ROS generation and cellular component oxidation, as well as the increase in caspase-8, 9, and 3 activities in the branchiae of the carp and inhibited ROS generation. It furthermore avoided the loss of Na+,K+-ATPase and metabolic enzyme activities, the decrease in GSH levels and hemoglobin content, the increase in the activities of caspase-8, 9, and 3 and the increase in the levels of cytochrome c and phosphatidylserine exposure in the red blood corpuscles of Cu-exposed carp. The present results suggested that dietary AsE improved hypoxia tolerance and inhibited HR or Cu-triggered oxidative lesions and apoptosis. Therefore, AsE can be utilized as a natural inhibitor of Cu and HR stress in fish.

Lysosomal Cu(I)/Cu(II) Dependence of Antimicrobial Ability of Oyster Hemocytes and Regulation of Phagolysosomal System

Copper (Cu) is hyperaccumulated in oyster hemocytes and is an essential trace metal indispensable for diverse innate immune functions. However, the roles of Cu in oyster immune defense are still unclear. In this study, Cu exposure enhanced the phagocytosis of zymosan by increasing the number and length of filopodia, as well as mitochondrial ROS (mitoROS) production mainly in granulocytes, followed by semigranulocytes and agranulocytes. The intracellular calcium level increased to promote the phagosome-lysosome fusion after Cu exposure. The enhancement of phagosomal acidification and mitochondrion-phagosome juxtaposition were also found in granulocytes after Cu exposure. These results indicated that Cu could regulate the phagolysosomal system to enhance the antimicrobial ability of oyster hemocytes with the assistance of mitoROS. Furthermore, Cu(I) and Cu(II) were predominately located in lysosomes, and degranulation may provide a mechanism for exposing Cu to bacteria to prevent their survival and proliferation. Specifically, we showed that the newly formed Cu(I) arising from lysosomal Cu(II) moved to lysosomes and mitochondria in activated hemocytes to induce strong immune responses. The ability of the transformation of Cu(I) from Cu(II) followed granulocytes > semigranlocytes > agranulocytes, indicating that granulocytes played important roles in immune functions of oysters. Our results provided new insights into the understanding of antimicrobial effects of Cu in oyster hemocytes.

Copper and Diabetes: Current Research and Prospect

Copper is an essential trace metal for normal cellular functions; a lack of copper is reported to impair the function of important copper-binding enzymes, while excess copper could lead to cell death. Numerous studies have shown an association between dietary copper consumption or plasma copper levels and the incidence of diabetes/diabetes complications. And experimental studies have revealed multiple signaling pathways that are triggered by copper shortages or copper overload in diabetic conditions. Moreover, studies show that treated with copper chelators improve vascular function, maintain copper homeostasis, inhibit cuproptosis, and reduce cell toxicity, thereby alleviating diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, and cardiomyopathy. However, the mechanisms reported in these studies are inconsistent or even contradictory. This review summarizes the precise and tight regulation of copper homeostasis processes, and discusses the latest progress in the association of diabetes and dietary copper/plasma copper. Further, the study pays close attention to the therapeutic potential of copper chelators and copper in diabetes and its complications, and hopes to provide new insight for the treatment of diabetes.

3D Carbon Fiber Skeleton Film Modified with Gradient Cu Nanoparticles as Auxiliary Anode Regulates Dendrite-Free, Bottom-Up Zinc Deposition

Achieving stable Zn plating/stripping under high current density and large area capacity remains a major challenge for metal Zn anodes. To address this issue, common filter paper is utilized to construct 3D carbon fiber skeleton film modified with gradient Cu nanoparticles (CFF@Cu). The original zincophobic hydrophilic CFF is transformed into gradient zincophilic and reversed gradient hydrophilic composite, due to the gradient distribution of Cu nanoparticles. When CFF@Cu is placed above Zn foil as an auxiliary anode, Zn foil anode exhibits stable, reversible, and dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping for 1200 h at 10 mA cm-2 and 2 mAh cm-2 , 2000 h at 2 mA cm-2 and 2 mAh cm-2 , 340 h at 10 mA cm-2 and 10 mAh cm-2 . Additionally, nucleation barrier of Zn, Zn2+ transport and deposition kinetics are improved. The deposits on the Zn foil anode become homogeneous, dense, and fine. Side reactions and by-products are effectively inhibited. The excellent performance is mainly attributed to the gradient zincophilic field in 3D CFF. A portion of Zn2+ is captured by Cu and deposited within CFF@Cu from bottom to top, which reduces and homogenizes Zn2+ flux on Zn foil, as well as weakens and homogenizes electric field on Zn foil.

Development of Cu application using dual-energy computed tomography for detecting medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw

INTRODUCTION

The present study developed an application using dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) focused on Cu for detecting medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

First, we performed two types of phantom studies using a Cu wire syringe and pig mandible with Cu wire to detect Cu on DECT. Second, DECT examinations of 44 patients with MRONJ were performed to compare lesion and normal bone sites using single-energy CT, DECT-virtual non-calcium (VNCa), and DECT-Cu applications. Quantitative analyses of VNCa CT and CT values were performed, and a cut-off value was calculated using receiver operating characteristic analysis. Third, we compared the Cu content in the MRONJ and normal bone groups using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).

RESULTS

The material-specific differences in attenuation between the two different energies enabled the accurate separation of Cu from Ca in phantom studies. The sensitivity and specificity for single-energy CT, DECT-VNCa, and DECT-Cu applications were 97.7% and 2.3%, 86.4% and 81.8%, and 88.6% and 97.7%, respectively. Thus, VNCa CT values obtained on DECT-Cu application images showed the highest area under the curve value and maximal diagnostic efficacy in differentiating lesion sites from normal bone sites. On ICP-AES analyses, the Cu content was significantly higher in the MRONJ group than in the normal bone group.

CONCLUSION

DECT-Cu application demonstrated better diagnostic performance in detecting MRONJ compared with single-energy CT or DECT-VNCa.

Influence of copper and aging on freely dissolved tetracycline concentration in soil

Copper (Cu) and tetracyclines (TCs) often coexist in agricultural soils because of the use of manures on farmland; however, the influence of Cu on the bioavailability of TCs is still unclear, especially for cases with aging Cu. The freely dissolved concentrations (FDCs) of TCs are believed to be directly related to their bioavailability. In the present study, the FDCs of TCs were determined using organic-diffusive gradients in thin films (o-DGT), and the influence of Cu on the FDCs of TCs in soils was evaluated. The results showed that the FDCs of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC) were 0.11-0.93, 0.28-1.02, and 0.24-0.53 μg/kg in the CK groups (no Cu added) and accounted for 0.09-0.58, 0.10-1.40, and 0.05-1.19‰ of their total concentrations which ranged from 0.2 to 10.0 mg/kg for TC, OTC, and CTC, respectively. The co-contamination of Cu reduced the FDCs of TCs in most cases, and aging increased the influence of Cu. The presence of Cu resulted in a decrease in the TC FDC by 35.48-95.04% in aged soils and 3.42-87.19% in newly prepared soils. FTIR analysis revealed that aging facilitated the bonding of Cu to soil particles via Cu-O, and Cu bonded to groups such as hydroxyl groups (-OH) in TCs. Our results suggested that the presence of Cu might reduce the bioavailability of TCs, and aging would enhance these effects. This is helpful for the bioavailability analysis of TCs under co-contamination of heavy metals.

Biochemical effects of copper nanomaterials in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells

In dose-response and structure-activity studies, human hepatic HepG2 cells were exposed for 3 days to nano Cu, nano CuO or CuCl2 (ions) at doses between 0.1 and 30 ug/ml (approximately the no observable adverse effect level to a high degree of cytotoxicity). Various biochemical parameters were then evaluated to study cytotoxicity, cell growth, hepatic function, and oxidative stress. With nano Cu and nano CuO, few indications of cytotoxicity were observed between 0.1 and 3 ug/ml. In respect to dose, lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate transaminase were the most sensitive cytotoxicity parameters. The next most responsive parameters were alanine aminotransferase, glutathione reductase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and protein concentration. The medium responsive parameters were superoxide dismutase, gamma glutamyltranspeptidase, total bilirubin, and microalbumin. The parameters glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and protein were all altered by nano Cu and nano CuO but not by CuCl2 exposures. Our chief observations were (1) significant decreases in glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and glutathione reductase was observed at doses below the doses that show high cytotoxicity, (2) even high cytotoxicity did not induce large changes in some study parameters (e.g., alkaline phosphatase, catalase, microalbumin, total bilirubin, thioredoxin reductase, and triglycerides), (3) even though many significant biochemical effects happen only at doses showing varying degrees of cytotoxicity, it was not clear that cytotoxicity alone caused all of the observed significant biochemical effects, and (4) the decreased glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and glutathione reductase support the view that oxidative stress is a main toxicity pathway of CuCl2 and Cu-containing nanomaterials.

Influence of the circadian cycle, sex and production stage on the reference values of parameters related to stress and pathology in porcine saliva

BACKGROUND

The concentration of biomarkers in saliva could be influenced by several factors not related to the specific condition under analyses, which should be considered for proper clinical interpretation. In the present study, the circadian rhythm of C-reactive protein (CRP), haptoglobin (Hp), Pig-MAP, S100A12, Cu, Zn, Adenosine deaminase (ADA), total protein (TP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), cortisol and α-amylase in saliva of 20 female and 20 male pigs was investigated. Moreover, the influence of sex and production phase (post-weaning, fattening and finishing) on the concentrations of biomarkers in a total of 414 healthy pigs was studied and the reference intervals for all salivary biomarkers were calculated accordingly.

RESULTS

All parameters except Pig-MAP, OSI and α-amylase varied significantly along the daytime, and most of them peak around early afternoon (13-15 h). The cosinor analysis described the temporal dynamics of circadian rhythms for all parameters. The range values showed differences between male and female pigs in 8 out of the 13 biomarkers, with higher concentrations in females in comparison to male pigs. The influence of the production phase on the salivary concentrations was observed for all the biomarkers. The highest concentrations were observed for Pig-MAP, S100A12 and α-amylase in post-weaning animals, for TP in growing pigs and for OSI in finishing animals. Most of the sex-influenced biomarkers showed the highest concentrations at growing stages with some exceptions such as ADA or Hp that showed the peak at finishing and post-weaning stages respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

It is necessary to establish the optimal daytime for routine saliva sampling to avoid circadian variations and for that end, the time interval between 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. is highly recommended. The factors sex and production phase influence the concentration of biomarkers and should be considered for proper biomarker interpretation. The reference intervals presented here for each salivary biomarker will help to correctly interpret the results of these analytes and contribute to the use of saliva as a non-invasive sample for the diagnosis and monitoring of the health status of swine farms.

On the Structural, Thermal, Micromechanical and Tribological Characterizations of Cu-Filled Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Micro-Composites

The purpose of this work was to investigate the structural, thermal, micromechanical and tribological properties of novel polymer/metal composite materials for bearing applications. Copper (Cu)-filled Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) composites were mixed in a laboratory scale by an internal mixer with two blade impellers, and then injection-molded. Neat ABS, ABS+5wt% Cu, ABS+10wt% Cu, and ABS+15wt% Cu were the four materials that were tested. The dispersion of Cu particles in the ABS matrix was investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and a micro-tomography scan. The filler particles have a uniform distribution in the matrix, according to the observations. The incorporation of Cu filler also refined an increase in the glass transition temperature from Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and less intensity in the amorphous phase by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Nanoindentation tests were carried out to characterize the micro-mechanical behavior of the composites. Friction and wear analysis were also examined using a pin-on-disk tribometer. Compared with neat ABS, all the micro-composites showed much higher indentation hardness, Vickers hardness, and indentation elastic modulus. It was also concluded that the incorporation of Cu filler into ABS simultaneously improved the friction and wear properties of the composites, which contributed to the suitability of the micro-filled composites with hard metallic particles for a wider range of mechanical components for bearing applications.

Neuroprotection with nanowired delivery of antioxidant compound H-290/51 together with serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist ondansetron

Nicotine abuse is frequent worldwide leading to about 8 millions people die every year due to tobacco related diseases. Military personnel often use nicotine smoking that is about 12.8% higher than civilian populations. Nicotine smoking triggers oxidative stress and are linked to several neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Nicotine neurotoxicity induces significant depression and oxidative stress in the brain leading to neurovascular damages and brain pathology. Thus, details of nicotine neurotoxicity and factors influencing them require additional investigations. In this review, effects of engineered nanoparticles from metals Ag and Cu (50-60 nm) on nicotine neurotoxicity are discussed with regard to nicotine smoking. Military personnel often work in the environment where chances of nanoparticles exposure are quite common. In our earlier studies, we have shown that nanoparticles alone induces breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and exacerbates brain pathology in animal models. In present investigation, nicotine exposure in with Ag or Cu nanoparticles intoxicated group exacerbated BBB breakdown, induce oxidative stress and aggravate brain pathology. Treatment with nanowired H-290/51 a potent chain-breaking antioxidant together with nanowired ondansetron, a potent 5-HT3 receptor antagonist significantly reduced oxidative stress, BBB breakdown and brain pathology in nicotine exposure associated with Ag or Cu nanoparticles intoxication. The functional significance of this findings and possible mechanisms of nicotine neurotoxicity are discussed based on current literature.

Fast degradation of atrazine by nZVI-Cu0/PMS: Re-evaluation and quantification of reactive species, generation pathways, and application feasibility

Additive metal to zero-valent iron (ZVI) could enhance the reduction ability and the additive Cu0 was incorporated to ZVI to accelerate PMS activation with atrazine (ATZ) as target compound. The efficiencies of ATZ degradation and PMS decomposition climbed up firstly and then declined as Cu0 loading increased from 0.01 to 1.00 wt% with the maximums at 0.10 wt%. SO4•-, HO•, Fe(IV), O2•- and 1O2 were generated by nZVI-Cu0/PMS based on the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and simultaneous degradation of nitrobenzene, ATZ, and methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO). The rate constant of Fe(IV) and ATZ was estimated as 7 × 104 M-1∙s-1 via the variation of methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2)formation at different ATZ concentrations. However, Fe(IV) contributed negligibly to ATZ degradation due to the strong scavenging of Fe(IV) by PMS. SO4•- and HO• were the reactive species responsible for ATZ degradation and the yield ratio of SO4•- and HO• was about 8.70 at initial stage. Preliminary thermodynamic calculation on the possible activation ways revealed that the dominant production of SO4•- might originate from the atomic H reduction of PMS in the surface layer of nZVI-Cu0. Ten products of ATZ degradation were identified by HPLC/ESI/QTOF and the possible degradation pathways were analyzed combined with theoretical calculation on ATZ structure. The decrease of temperature or increase of solution pH led to the decline of ATZ degradation, as well as the individual addition of common ions (HCO3-, Cl-, SO42-, NH4+, NO3- and F-) and natural organic matters (NOM). In real water, ATZ was still efficiently degraded with the decontamination efficiency decreasing in the sequence of tap water > surface water > simulated wastewater > groundwater. For the treatment of ATZ-polluted continuous flow, nZVI-Cu0 in double-layer layout had a higher capacity than the single-layer mode. Meanwhile, the leaching TFe and TCu were limited. The results indicate nZVI-Cu0/PMS is applicable and the multiple-layer layout of nZVI-Cu0 is suggested for ATZ-polluted ground water and soil remediation.

Controllable Coating Graphene Oxide and Silanes on Cu Particles as Dual Protection for Anticorrosion

Although two-dimensional nanosheets like graphene could be ideal atomic coatings to prevent corrosion, it is still controversial whether they are actually effective due to the presence of parasitic effects such as galvanic corrosion. Here, we reported a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) coating strategy to protect sintered Cu metal powders from corrosion by addressing the common galvanic corrosion issue of graphene. A layer of silane molecules, namely, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), is deposited between the surface of Cu particles and the graphene oxide (GO), acting as a primer to enhance adhesion and as an insulating interlayer to prevent the direct contact of the Cu with conductive RGO, mitigating the galvanic corrosion. Due to this core-shell coating, the RGO uniformly distributes in the Cu matrix after sintering, avoiding aggregation of RGO, which takes place in conventional GO-Cu composites. The dual coating of GO and silane results in bulk samples with improved anticorrosion properties, as demonstrated by galvanostatic polarization tests using Tafel analysis. Our development not only provides an efficient synthesis method to controllably coat GO on the surface of Cu but also suggests an alternative strategy to avoid the galvanic corrosion effect of graphene to improve the anticorrosion performance of metal.

Mechanism for combined application of biochar and Bacillus cereus to reduce antibiotic resistance genes in copper contaminated soil and lettuce

The remediation of agricultural soil contaminated by antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is of great significance for protecting food safety and human health. Reducing the availability of copper in soil may control coresistance to ARGs. However, the feasibility of applying nano-biochar and Bacillus cereus to mitigate the spread of ARGs in Cu contaminated soil remains unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the use of biochar with different particle sizes (2 % apple branch biochar and 0.5 % nano-biochar) and 3 g m-2B. cereus in a 60-day pot experiment with growing lettuce. The effects of single and combined application on the abundances of ARGs in Cu-contaminated soil (Cu = 200 mg kg-1) were compared, and the related mechanisms were explored. Studies have shown that the addition of biochar alone is detrimental to mitigating ARGs in soil-lettuce systems. The combined application of 3 g m-2B. cereus and 0.5 % nano-biochar effectively inhibited the proliferation of ARGs in Cu-contaminated soil, and 3 g m-2B. cereus effectively inhibited the proliferation of ARGs in lettuce. Partial least squares-path modeling and network analysis showed that bacterial communities and mobile genetic elements were the key factors that affected the abundances of ARGs in rhizosphere soil, and Cu resistance genes and bioavailable copper (acid extractable state Cu (F1) + reducing state Cu (F2)) had less direct impacts. The bacterial community was the key factor that affected the abundances of ARGs in lettuce. Rhodobacter (Proteobacteria), Corynebacterium (Actinobacteria), and Methylobacterium (Proteobacteria) may have been hosts of ARGs in lettuce plants. B. cereus and nano-biochar affected the abundances of ARGs by improving the soil properties and reducing the soil bioavailability of Cu, as well as directly or indirectly changing the bacterial community composition in soil and lettuce, thereby impeding the transport of ARGs to aboveground plant parts.

Enhancing EDM Machining Precision through Deep Cryogenically Treated Electrodes and ANN Modelling Approach

The critical applications of difficult-to-machine Inconel 617 (IN617) compel the process to be accurate enough that the requirement of tight tolerances can be met. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is commonly engaged in its machining. However, the intrinsic issue of over/undercut in EDM complicates the achievement of accurately machined profiles. Therefore, the proficiency of deep cryogenically treated (DCT) copper (Cu) and brass electrodes under modified dielectrics has been thoroughly investigated to address the issue. A complete factorial design was implemented to machine a 300 μm deep impression on IN617. The machining ability of DCT electrodes averagely gave better dimensional accuracy as compared to non-DCT electrodes by 13.5% in various modified dielectric mediums. The performance of DCT brass is 29.7% better overall compared to the average value of overcut (OC) given by DCT electrodes. Among the non-treated (NT) electrodes, the performance of Cu stands out when employing a Kerosene-Span-20 modified dielectric. In comparison to Kerosene-Tween-80, the value of OC is 33.3% less if Kerosene-Span-20 is used as a dielectric against the aforementioned NT electrode. Finally, OC's nonlinear and complex phenomena are effectively modeled by an artificial neural network (ANN) with good prediction accuracy, thereby eliminating the need for experiments.

Additive Manufacturing of Cu Using Graphene-Oxide-Treated Powder

Additive manufacturing of Cu is interesting for many applications where high thermal and electric conductivity are required. A problem with printing of Cu with a laser-based process is the high reflectance of the powder for near-infrared wavelengths making it difficult to print components with a high density. In this study, we have investigated laser bed fusion (L-PBF) of Cu using graphene oxide (GO)-coated powder. The powder particles were coated in a simple wet-chemical process using electrostatic attractions between the GO and the powder surface. The coated powder exhibited a reduced reflectivity, which improved the printability and increased the densities from ~90% for uncoated powder to 99.8% using 0.1 wt% GO and a laser power of 500 W. The coated Cu powders showed a tendency for balling using laser powers below 400 W, and increasing the GO concentration from 0.1 to 0.3 wt.% showed an increase in spattering and reduced density. Graphene-like sheet structures could be observed in the printed parts using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Carbon-filled inclusions with sizes ranging from 10-200 nm could also be observed in the printed parts using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The GO treatment yielded parts with higher hardness (75.7 HV) and electrical conductivity (77.8% IACS) compared to the parts printed with reference Cu powder.

Distribution of Iron, Copper, Zinc and Cadmium in Glia, Their Influence on Glial Cells and Relationship with Neurodegenerative Diseases

Recent data on the distribution and influence of copper, zinc and cadmium in glial cells are summarized. This review also examines the relationship between those metals and their role in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which have become a great challenge for today's physicians. The studies suggest that among glial cells, iron has the highest concentration in oligodendrocytes, copper in astrocytes and zinc in the glia of hippocampus and cortex. Previous studies have shown neurotoxic effects of copper, iron and manganese, while zinc can have a bidirectional effect, i.e., neurotoxic but also neuroprotective effects depending on the dose and disease state. Recent data point to the association of metals with neurodegeneration through their role in the modulation of protein aggregation. Metals can accumulate in the brain with aging and may be associated with age-related diseases.

Adverse effects of copper, manganese and mercury, alone and in mixtures on the aorta and heart of Spraque-Dawley rats

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a common global cause of death and are therefore a major health concern. Inhaled or ingested environmental heavy metals contribute to the development of CVD. The aim of this study was to address the limited information available on the effect of relevant dosages of metals in mixtures. Three metals with reported effects on the cardiovascular system (CVS) were identified, and these metals were copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and mercury (Hg). In Sprague-Dawley rats, the adverse effects of copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and mercury (Hg), alone and as part of mixtures, on the blood parameters, the aorta and heart were investigated. Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into eight groups (n = 6): control, Cu, Mn, Hg, Cu + Mn, Cu + Hg, Mn + Hg and Cu, Mn + Hg. The seven experimental groups received the metal mixtures at 100 times the World Health Organisation (WHO) safety limit for drinking water (2 mg/L for Cu, 0.4 mg/L for Mn and 0.06 mg/L for Hg) via oral gavage for 28 days. After 28 days, compared with the control, red blood cell levels were increased for Cu + Hg. All other measured blood parameters were unchanged. Morphological changes in the tunica media were connective tissue deposition and an abundance of collagen type I in the metal exposed aortic tissues. In the cardiac tissue of metal-exposed rats, changes in the cardiomyocyte and myofibrillar arrangement, with an increase in collagen type I and III was observed. Ultrastructurally, the aortic collagen and elastin band arrangement and the cardiac mitochondrial and myofibrillar arrangement and structures were altered in the experimental groups. These changes indicated that exposure to these metals in rats caused minor changes in the blood parameters, however, the changes in tissue and cellular structure indicated an increased risk for the development of CVD.

Atomically dispersed copper sites on titanium zirconium oxide accelerate the simultaneous oxidative removal of organic carbon and ammonia from landfill leachate

Landfill leachate is a refractory wastewater. Low-temperature catalytic air oxidation (LTCAO) has shown considerable potential for leachate treatment owing to its green and simple operation, but the simultaneous removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia from leachate remains challenging. Herein, TiZrO₄ @Cu_SA hollow spheres with high-loading single-atom Cu were synthesized using isovolumic vacuum impregnation and co-calcination methods, and the catalyst was applied to the LTCAO treatment of real leachate. Consequently, the removal rate of UV₂₅₄ reached 66% at 90 °C within 5 h, while that for COD was 88%. Simultaneously, the NH₃/NH₄⁺ (33.5 mg/L, 100 wt%) in the leachate was oxidized to N₂ (88.2 wt%), NO₂^--N (11.0 wt%), and NO₃^--N (0.3 wt%) owing to the effect of free radicals. The single-atom Cu co-catalyst in TiZrO₄ @Cu_SA exhibited a localized surface plasmon resonance effect at the active center, which could quickly transfer electrons to O₂ in water to form O₂^.- with a high activation efficiency. The degradation products were determined and the deduced pathway was as follows: the bonds joining benzene rings were first broken, and then the ring structure was further opened to produce acetic acid and other simple organic macromolecules, which were finally mineralized to CO₂ and H₂O.

Metagenomic insights into the inhibitory mechanisms of Cu on fermentative hydrogen production

Cu is widely present in the feedstocks of dark fermentation, which can inhibit H₂ production efficiency of the process. However, current understanding on the inhibitory mechanisms of Cu, especially the microbiological mechanism, is still lacking. This study investigated the inhibitory mechanisms of Cu²⁺ on fermentative hydrogen production by metagenomics sequencing. Results showed that the exposure to Cu²⁺ reduced the abundances of high-yielding hydrogen-producing genera (e.g. Clostridium sensu stricto), and remarkably down-regulated the genes involved in substrate membrane transport (e.g., gtsA, gtsB and gtsC), glycolysis (e.g. PK, ppgK and pgi-pmi), and hydrogen formation (e.g. pflA, fdoG, por and E1.12.7.2), leading to significant inhibition on the process performances. The H₂ yield was reduced from 1.49 mol H₂/mol-glucose to 0.59 and 0.05 mol H₂/mol-glucose upon exposure to 500 and 1000 mg/L of Cu²⁺, respectively. High concentrations of Cu²⁺ also reduced the rate of H₂ production and prolonged the H₂-producing lag phase.

The association of vitamin A, zinc and copper levels with clinical symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorders in Jilin Province, China

BACKGROUND

This study evaluated vitamin A (VA), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) levels in the population with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Jilin Province, China. Furthermore, we examined their links to core symptoms and neurodevelopment, as well as gastrointestinal (GI) comorbidities and sleep disorders.

METHODS

This study included 181 children with autism and 205 typically developing (TD) children. The participants had not taken vitamin/mineral supplements in the prior three months. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to measure serum VA levels. By using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, Zn and Cu concentrations in plasma were determined. Importantly, the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, the Social Responsiveness Scale, and the Autism Behavior Checklist were used to measure core ASD symptoms. However, the Griffith Mental Development Scales-Chinese were used to measure neurodevelopment. GI comorbidities and sleep abnormalities were assessed with the 6 Item-Gastrointestinal Severity Index and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, respectively. Children with ASD with GI issues were grouped according to severity (low GI severity and high GI severity groups).

RESULTS

(i) The difference in VA, Zn, Cu levels and the Zn/Cu ratio between ASD and TD children is small. But children with ASD had lower VA levels and Zn/Cu ratio, higher Cu levels than TD children. Cu levels in children with ASD were associated with the severity of core symptoms. (ii) Children with ASD were much more likely than their TD counterparts to suffer from GI comorbidities or sleep problems. Furthermore, it was observed that high GI severity was associated with lower levels of VA, whereas low GI severity was associated with higher levels of VA. (iii) The children with ASD who had both lower VA and lower Zn/Cu ratio had more severe scores on the Autism Behavior Checklist, but not on other measures.

CONCLUSION

Children with ASD had lower VA and Zn/Cu ratio, and higher Cu levels. Cu levels in children with ASD were weakly correlated with one subscale on social or self-help. ASD children with lower VA levels may face more serious GI comorbidities. Children with ASD combined VA-Zn/Cu lower had more severe core symptoms.

Unexpected Value of Honey Color for Prediction of a Non-Enzymatic H2O2 Production and Honey Antibacterial Activity: A Perspective

Hydrogen peroxide is the principal antibacterial compound of honey and its concentration determines honey bacteriostatic (MIC) and bactericidal (MBC) potencies. Levels of H₂O₂ produced are highly relevant to honey therapeutic potential, but they vary extensively among honey with reasons not immediately apparent. According to a traditional view, H₂O₂ is produced as a by-product of glucose oxidation by the honey bee enzyme, glucose oxidase; however, significant levels of H₂O₂ could be produced in a non-enzymatic way via polyphenol autooxidation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential for such an alternative pathway by re-examining evidence from many experimental and correlative studies in order to identify factors and compounds required for pro-oxidant activity. Unexpectedly, the color intensity was found to be the main indicator separating honey varieties based on the quantitative differences in the polyphenolic content, antioxidant activity and the content of transition metals, Fe, Cu and Mn, the main factors required for pro-oxidant effects. The color-impeding polyphenolics and their oxidation products (semiquinones and quinones) further contributed to color development through multiple chemical conjugations with proteins, phenolic oxidative polymerization, chelation or the reduction of metal ions. Moreover, quinones, as an intrinsic part of polyphenol redox activity, play an active role in the formation of higher-order structures, melanoidins and colloids in honey. The latter structures are also known to chelate metal ions, potentially contributing to H₂O₂ production. Thus, the color intensity appears as a major parameter that integrates polyphenol-dependent pro-oxidant reactions resulting in H₂O₂ generation.

Influence and mechanism of the vertical distribution of Cu, Cd, and Pb at a simulated sediment-water interface covered by degradable microplastics

Currently research on microplastics in the environment focuses on non-degradable microplastics with little attention to research on degradable microplastics. This study involved a 400-day experiment in a simulated lake environment of three degradable microplastics, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and poly(butylene adipate terephthalate) (PBAT) at the sediment water interface. Results showed that (1) for the three microplastics, Cd concentration showed a large change from 0 to 20 mm in the water above the sediment interface; the adsorption of Cd, Pb, and Cu in a diffusive gradients thin film (DGT) device are the highest in PBAT micro plastic, followed by PCL and then PBS. (2) Diffuse flux (J) of the three degradable microplastics indicated that Cu, Cd, and Pb in the sediments come from the overlying water that was added to the simulation experiment. (3) Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) for investigating the adsorption capacity of Cu, Cd, and Pb in the three degradable microplastics showed the absorption peak intensity increased and widened, and some adsorption sites changed. (4) Correlation analysis showed that the factors which most influenced diffusion flux for both water and sediments are oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), followed by organic matter (OM), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC).

Sol-Gel Immobilized Optical Microalgal Biosensor for Monitoring Cd, Cu and Zn Bioavailability in Freshwater

While analytical measurements provide the quantitative estimation of the total amount of metals present in a sample, they do not reflect the truly bioavailable fraction of metal which reflects the adverse biological effect. Hence the development of monitoring tools for detecting bioavailable toxic metals has become a priority in environmental monitoring activities. An optical whole-cell biosensor was constructed using the microalga Scenedesmus subspicatus MM1 immobilizing in inorganic silica hydrogels using the sol-gel technique to detect bioavailable Cadmium (Cd²⁺), Copper (Cu²⁺) and Zinc (Zn⁺) in freshwater. Conditions for optimum biosensor performance have been established regarding effective pH range, cell density, exposure time, and storage stability. The optimum response for the biosensor was dependent on the pH of the matrix, cell concentration and exposure time were derived. The biosensor was operational for four weeks. The limit of detection for the algal biosensor was determined as 9.0 × 10^-1, 9.1 × 10^-1, and 8.8 × 10^-1 mg/L for Cd, Cu and Zn, respectively. Whole-cell cell biosensor will be highly useful since it comprises a single microalgal species able to detect the bioavailable content of Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Zn²⁺ in freshwater.

Mobility indexes of Cu, Pb, and Zn in soil ecosystems with various levels of metal contamination (in Poland)

The aim of the study was to investigate and compare the soils of three groups of grassland ecosystems with varying degrees of heavy metal (Cu, Pb, and Zn) pollution as well as estimating of mobility on the basis of calculated mobility indexes (MI) expressed as a percentage of the EDTA-extracted forms of metals in their total content. A total of 55 surface soil samples were collected from various areas of Poland: urban soils, rural soils, and soils along communication routes. Heavy metal concentrations were determined in solutions after wet mineralization (using a mixture of acids) by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with flame atomization. To isolate the mobile forms of metals in soils, a one-step extraction method was used with 0.05-M EDTA solution. The ranges of Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations in soils were varied, respectively: 6.7-47.6, 61.1-563.9, and 86.4-644.5 mg·kg^-1 (A); 5.7-39.8, 13.56-45.71, and 16.3-119.6 mg·kg^-1 (B); and 1.0-195.8, 19.2-310.2, and 27.4-894.1 mg·kg^-1 (C). The average values of mobility indexes of Cu, Pb, and Zn were at the level of 40.9, 33.5, and 22.2% (A); 23.2, 27.1, and 25.9% (B); and 37.5, 34.3, and 30.7% (C). Studies have shown that metals derived from anthropogenic sources are characterized by greater mobility compared to metals of natural origin (lithological associated with the ground). The inclusion of metal mobility indices in the environmental monitoring strategy may minimize errors in assessing the actual risk associated with the potential uptake of these metals by plants and incorporation into circulation.

Effect of Cu addition to AISI 8630 steel on the resistance to microbial corrosion

Low-alloy, high-strength structural steel AISI 8630 is exposed to severe microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in its application environment. To address this issue, we independently designed and developed an AISI 8630 steel containing 0.4 wt% Cu (Cu-AISI 8630) to exploit the Cu antimicrobial effect. The corrosion behavior of two steels in the presence of marine Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm was explored by analyzing weight loss, electrochemical tests, SEM images, corrosion pit dimensions, and corrosion products. The electrochemical test results showed an increase in R_p and a significant positive shift in E_corr for Cu-AISI 8630 steel compared to AISI 8630 steel during the immersion cycles. A comparison of the pit morphology of AISI 8630 steel and Cu-AISI 8630 steel after 14 days showed that the maximum MIC pit depth was significantly reduced in the latter compared to the former (3.65 μm vs 9.47 μm). The XPS results showed that protective Cu₂O and CuO layers were formed on the surface of Cu-AISI 8630 steel. The experimental results show that Cu improves the MIC resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms significantly.

Antibiotics are a kind of emerging contaminant in soil. Tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in soil are often detected, even with very high concentration in the soils of facility agriculture due to their good effect, low price and large usage. Copper (Cu) is common heavy metal pollutant in soil. The toxicity roles of TC, OTC and/or Cu in soil on a commonly consumed vegetable Capsicum annuum L. and its Cu accumulation were not clear till now. The results of pot experiment showed that the TC or OTC added in soil alone didn't produce poison effects for C. annuum after 6 weeks and 12 weeks growth reflected by some physiological index like SOD, CAT and APX activities changes, while the biomass changes affirmed them either. Cu contaminated soil significantly inhibited the growth of C. annuum. Furthermore, combined pollution of Cu with TC or OTC was with more serious suppression of C. annuum growth. The suppression role of OTC was heavier than TC in Cu and TC or OTC contaminated soil. Such phenomenon was relevant with the role of TC or OTC increased Cu concentration in C. annuum. The improvement role of TC or OTC on Cu accumulation in C. annuum caused by the increased extractable Cu concentration in soil. The study demonstrated that TC or OTC added in soil alone was without any toxicity to C. annuum. But they may aggravate the hurt of C. annuum caused by Cu through increased its accumulation from soil. Thus, such combine pollution should be avoided in safe agricultural product.

Field evaluation of industrial non-food crops for phytomanaging a metal-contaminated dredged sediment

Phytomanagement is a concept fit for a bio-based circular economy that combines phytotechnologies and biomass production for non-food purposes. Here, ten annual and perennial industrial non-food crops (Sorghum Biomass 133, Sorghum Santa Fe red, Linum usitatissimum L., Eucalyptus sp., Salix Inger, Salix Tordis, Beta vulgaris L., Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth., Malva sylvestris L., and Chenopodium album L.) were studied under field conditions for phytomanaging a metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn)-contaminated dredged sediment in the North of France. The crops were selected according to their relevance to pedoclimatic and future climatic conditions, and one or more non-food end-products were proposed for each plant part collected, such as biogas, bioethanol, compost, natural dye, ecocatalyst, and fiber. Based on the soil-plant transfer of metals, eight out of the crops cultivated on field plots exhibited an excluder behavior (bioconcentration factor, BCF < 1), a trait suitable for phytostabilization. However, these crops did not change the metal mobilities in the dredged sediment. The BCF < 1 was not sufficient to characterize the excluder behavior of crops as this factor depended on the total dredged-sediment contaminant. Therefore, a BCF group ranking method was proposed accounting for metal phytotoxicity levels or yield decrease as a complemental way to discuss the crop behavior. The feasibility of the biomass-processing chains was discussed based on these results and according to a survey of available legislation in standard and scientific literature.

Preparation of Cu/Sn-Organic Nano-Composite Catalysts for Potential Use in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Electrochemical Characterization

In this work, the solvothermal solidification method has been used to be prepared as a homogenous CuSn-organic nano-composite (CuSn-OC) to use as a catalyst for alkaline water electrolysis for cost-effective H₂ generation. FT-IR, XRD, and SEM techniques were used to characterize the CuSn-OC which confirmed the formation of CuSn-OC with a terephthalic acid linker as well as Cu-OC and Sn-OC. The electrochemical investigation of CuSn-OC onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was evaluated using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) method in 0.1 M KOH at room temperature. The thermal stability was examined using TGA methods, and the Cu-OC recorded a 91.4% weight loss after 800 °C whereas the Sn-OC and CuSn-OC recorded 16.5 and 62.4%, respectively. The results of the electroactive surface area (ECSA) were 0.5, 0.42, and 0.33 m² g^-1 for the CuSn-OC, Cu-OC, and Sn-OC, respectively, and the onset potentials for HER were -420, -900, and -430 mV vs. the RHE for the Cu-OC, Sn-OC, and CuSn-OC, respectively. LSV was used to evaluate the electrode kinetics, and the Tafel slope for the bimetallic catalyst CuSn-OC was 190 mV dec^-1, which was less than for both the monometallic catalysts, Cu-OC and Sn-OC, while the overpotential was -0.7 vs. the RHE at a current density of -10 mA cm^-2.

[Physiological regulation of salicylic acid on Helianthus tubeuosus upon copper stress and root FTIR analysis]

Phytoremediation plays an important role in the treatment of heavy metal pollution in soil. In order to elucidate the mechanism of salicylic acid (SA) on copper absorption, seedlings from Xuzhou (with strong Cu-tolerance) and Weifang Helianthus tuberosus cultivars (with weak Cu-tolerance) were selected for pot culture experiments. 1 mmol/L SA was sprayed upon 300 mg/kg soil copper stress, and the photosynthesis, leaf antioxidant system, several essential mineral nutrients and the changes of root upon copper stress were analyzed to explore the mechanism of copper resistance. The results showed that Pn, Tr, Gs and Ci upon copper stress decreased significantly compared to the control group. Meanwhile, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoid decreased with significant increase in initial fluorescence (F₀), maximum photochemical quantum yield of PSⅡ (Fv/Fm), electron transfer rate (ETR) and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) content all decreased. The ascorbic acid (AsA) content was decreased, the glutathione (GSH) value was increased, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity in the leaves were decreased, and the peroxidase (POD) activity was significantly increased. SA increased the Cu content in the ground and root system, and weakened the nutrient uptake capacity of K, Ca, Mg, and Zn in the root stem and leaves. Spray of exogenous SA can maintain the opening of leaf stomata, improve the adverse effect of copper on photosynthetic pigment and PSⅡ reaction center. Mediating the SOD and APX activity started the AsA-GSH cycle process, effectively regulated the antioxidant enzyme system in chrysanthemum taro, significantly reduced the copper content of all parts of the plant, and improved the ion exchange capacity in the body. External SA increased the content of the negative electric group on the root by changing the proportion of components in the root, promoted the absorption of mineral nutrient elements and the accumulation of osmoregulatory substances, strengthened the fixation effect of the root on metal copper, and avoided its massive accumulation in the H. tuberosus body, so as to alleviate the inhibitory effect of copper on plant growth. The study revealed the physiological regulation of SA upon copper stress, and provided a theoretical basis for planting H. tuberosus to repair soil copper pollution.

A Review on Montmorillonite-Based Nanoantimicrobials: State of the Art

One of the crucial challenges of our time is to effectively use metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) as an alternative way to combat drug-resistant infections. Metal and metal oxide NPs such as Ag, Ag₂O, Cu, Cu₂O, CuO, and ZnO have found their way against antimicrobial resistance. However, they also suffer from several limitations ranging from toxicity issues to resistance mechanisms by complex structures of bacterial communities, so-called biofilms. In this regard, scientists are urgently looking for convenient approaches to develop heterostructure synergistic nanocomposites which could overcome toxicity issues, enhance antimicrobial activity, improve thermal and mechanical stability, and increase shelf life. These nanocomposites provide a controlled release of bioactive substances into the surrounding medium, are cost effective, reproducible, and scalable for real life applications such as food additives, nanoantimicrobial coating in food technology, food preservation, optical limiters, the bio medical field, and wastewater treatment application. Naturally abundant and non-toxic Montmorillonite (MMT) is a novel support to accommodate NPs, due to its negative surface charge and control release of NPs and ions. At the time of this review, around 250 articles have been published focusing on the incorporation of Ag-, Cu-, and ZnO-based NPs into MMT support and thus furthering their introduction into polymer matrix composites dominantly used for antimicrobial application. Therefore, it is highly relevant to report a comprehensive review of Ag-, Cu-, and ZnO-modified MMT. This review provides a comprehensive overview of MMT-based nanoantimicrobials, particularly dealing with preparation methods, materials characterization, and mechanisms of action, antimicrobial activity on different bacterial strains, real life applications, and environmental and toxicity issues.

Copper Induces Cognitive Impairment in Mice via Modulation of Cuproptosis and CREB Signaling

It has been reported that disordered Cu metabolism is associated with several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. In this study, 4-week-old male mice were exposed to Cu by free-drinking water for three months. Then, the effects of Cu on cognitive functions in mice were tested by Morris water maze tests, and the potential mechanisms were investigated by the ELISA, immunochemistry, TUNEL, and Western blot tests. It was found that Cu exacerbates learning and memory impairment, and leads to Cu-overload in the brain and urine of mice. The results showed that Cu induces neuronal degeneration and oxidative damage, promotes the expression of apoptosis-related protein Bax, cuproptosis-related proteins FDX1 and DLAT and the proteotoxic stress marker HSP70, and decreases Fe-S cluster proteins. In addition, Cu affects the pre-synaptic and post-synaptic regulatory mechanisms through inhibiting the expression of PSD-95 and SYP. Cu also suppresses phosphorylation levels in CREB and decreases the expression of BDNF and TrkB in the mouse hippocampus. In conclusion, Cu might mediate cuproptosis, damage synaptic plasticity and inhibit the CREB/BDNF pathway to cause cognitive dysfunction in mice.

Cu/Al2O3 aerogels for high-efficiency and rapid iodide elimination from water

Cu-based functional materials are excellent candidates for the elimination of iodine anions. However, the low utilization rate of Cu and its unsatisfactory adsorption performance limit its large-scale practical applications. This paper proposes a co-gelation method to obtain Cu/Al₂O₃ aerogels with a high specific area (537 m²/g). Cu/Al₂O₃ aerogels have a hierarchical porous structure and contain a high proportion of Cu (20.5 wt%). The high dispersibility of Cu, which is based on an in-situ gel process, provides conditions for the high-efficiency elimination of iodide anions. We conducted adsorption experiments that demonstrated that the fabricated Cu/Al₂O₃ aerogel had an ultrahigh adsorption capacity (407.6 mg/g) and a fast adsorption equilibrium time (0.5 h) for iodide anions. Additionally, the Cu/Al₂O₃ aerogel could selectively capture iodine anions even in the presence of high concentrations of competing ions (NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, and Cl^- at 60 mmol/L). Importantly, the aerogel can operate in a wide pH range of 3-11 without causing secondary pollution. This work demonstrates that low-cost Cu/Al₂O₃ aerogels exhibit great potential for eliminating radioactive iodine anions.

Effect of Cu on the Formation of Reversed Austenite in Super Martensitic Stainless Steel

We investigated the effect of Cu on the formation of reversed austenite in super martensitic stainless steel by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and an energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Our results showed that the microstructure of the steels comprised tempered martensite and diffused reversed austenite after the steels were quenched at 1050 °C and tempered at 550-750 °C. The volume fraction of reversed austenite in the steel with 3 wt.% of Cu (3Cu) was more than that with 1.5 wt.% of Cu (1.5Cu). The transmission electron microscope results revealed that the reversed austenite in 1.5Cu steel mainly had the shape of a thin strip, while that in 3Cu steel had a block shape. The nucleation points and degree of Ni enrichment of reversed austenite in 3Cu steel were higher than those in 1.5Cu steel. The reversed austenite was more likely to grow in ε-Cu enriched regions. Therefore, Cu can promote reversed austenite nucleation and growth. The mechanical properties of 3 Cu steel are obviously better than those of 1.5Cu steel when tempered at 550-650 °C.

Evaluation of Relationship Between SOD1 50-bp Deletion Gene Polymorphism, Cu, Zn Level, and Viscosity in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis Patients with Vertebral Fractures

Oxidative stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of bone loss, causing low bone mineral density (BMD) and associated osteoporotic fractures. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship of SOD1 50-bp insertion(Ins)/deletion(Del) polymorphism that is involved in oxidative stress metabolism, Cu and Zn element concentrations, and plasma viscosity level, with postmenopausal osteoporosis and related vertebral fractures. The study included 167 voluntary individuals. The 50-bp Ins/Del polymorphism of SOD1 was determined by allele-specific PCR. Plasma Cu and Zn levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The plasma viscosity was determined using the Harkness Capillary Viscometer device. In our study, the distribution of SOD1 promoter 50-bp Ins/Del polymorphism did not indicate a significant difference between the groups and in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients with and without fractures (p > 0.05). The Ins/Ins genotype was found to be common in individuals in both groups. The Cu and Zn levels of the study group were found to be between the normal reference values (p > 0.05). It was determined that plasma viscosity increased significantly in the group of osteoporotic patients and in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis with fractures (p < 0.01). In addition, plasma viscosity was found to significantly increase in patients with Ins/Ins genotype and fractures (p < 0.01). Postmenopausal osteoporosis and associated vertebral fracture were found not to be directly related to SOD1 50-bp polymorphism and Cu and Zn element levels. Plasma viscosity levels were found to increase due to the increase in oxidative stress products. Further studies are needed to clarify the roles and relationships of SOD genes and trace elements in the development of postmenopausal osteoporosis and vertebral fracture.

Certain patterns of zinc, copper, and lead redistribution across the structural fractions of Chernozems and Urbic Technosols

The purpose of this work was to study the patterns of Zn, Cu, and Pb distribution in soil aggregates of various size fractions. Materials were Calcic Chernozems and Urbic Technosol of the Rostov agglomeration. Soil samples were passed through sieves with different mesh sizes (dry sieving). For the study, particle size fractions of > 10, 7-5, 5-3, 2-1, and < 0.25 mm were sampled, where the total forms of Zn, Cu, and Pb were examined by means of the X-ray fluorescence method. In the Zn content in both Calcic Chernozems and Urbic Technosol peaks in < 0.25-mm particle size fractions, the concentration decreases as particle size grows. Calcic Chernozems display Cu concentrations in mid-size soil particles of 2-1 and 5-3 mm. In Urbic Technosols, the lowest Cu concentration is typically found in particle size fractions of > 10 mm. Pb in Calcic Chernozems is concentrated in mid-size soil aggregates of 2-1 and 5-3 mm. However, Urbic Technosols tend to accumulate silt-fraction lead (< 0.25 mm). A higher zinc concentration in silt-fraction aggregates found in Urbic Technosols in comparison to Calcic Chernozems highlights the anthropogenic origin of a considerable part of this element's soil pool. Excessively high lead content in UR (urbic) horizons leads to the structure degradation and, consequently, to a transformed overall trend of HM distribution across the soil profile in general.

ZIF-8-derived Cu, N co-doped carbon as a bifunctional cathode catalyst for enhanced performance of microbial fuel cell

The development of bifunctional catalysts is an effective way to simultaneously address the slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the cathode and biofilm contamination in the microbial fuel cells (MFC). Cu-N/C@Cu composites were synthesized as bifunctional cathode catalysts for MFC by doping, adsorption, and two calcinations by using Cu-ZIF-8 as the precursor. The higher Cu-N_x content confers excellent ORR catalytic activity to the optimized Cu-N/C@Cu-2 catalyst. The half-wave potential for Cu-N/C@Cu-2 in a neutral solution is 0.67 V vs. RHE, which is close to that of commercial 20% Pt/C (0.70 V vs. RHE). The maximum power density of the MFCs assembled with Cu-N/C@Cu-2 reached 581 ± 13 mW m^-2, which is even better than that using Pt/C (499 ± 13 mW m^-2). Moreover, the results of antimicrobial activity and biomass test show that the higher Cu content made Cu-N/C@Cu-2 effective against the contamination of cathode biofilm. And the 16S rDNA results find that the community structure of the biofilm is favorable for the power production and purification of MFC. This work shows that copper-based materials can be used as potential bifunctional catalysts to promote MFC applications in wastewater treatment.

The Serum Levels of the Heavy Metals Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb and Progression of COPD-A Preliminary Study

There is evidence in previous studies that high levels of heavy metals may play a key role in the development of COPD due to the induction of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. In this preliminary study, we used atomic absorption spectrophotometry to measure the levels of four heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in blood serum of COPD patients and controls over 2 years. Clinical data on disease progression or absence were collected in patients living in the industrial region of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. The mean values of Cu in the serum of patients with COPD and the control group were 374.29 ± 15.03 μg/L and 238.55 ± 175.31 μg/L, Zn—2010.435 ± 670.006 μg/L and 1672.78 ± 934.27 μg/L, Cd—0.334 ± 0.0216 μg/L and 0.395 ± 0.110 μg/L and Pb—0.0732 ± 0.009 μg/L and 0.075 ± 0.0153 μg/L. This is probably because these elements are biogenic and are used in the body for its anti-oxidant protection. In fact, it cannot be stated with certainty that elevated levels of Cu and Zn in the environment have a negative impact in COPD patients. There was a trend towards higher levels of the toxicants lead and cadmium in COPD patients compared to the control group of patients. There is a statistically unproven trend toward higher levels of lead and cadmium in COPD patients compared to controls, which to some extent supports our hypothesis that there is a relationship between environmental lead and cadmium levels and the COPD manifested. In COPD patients, a positive correlation was found between BMI and serum Cu levels (r = 0.413, p = 0.005). A higher concentration of serum Cu was found in men with BMI ≥ 30, compared to those with BMI < 30. There is also a positive correlation to a lesser extent between CRP and cadmium (r = 0.380; p = 0.019) and lead (r = 0.452; p = 0.004). The correlation of lead and cadmium with PSA also shows that these elements may also be associated with the presence of inflammatory processes. A significant negative correlation exists between Pb in the serum of patients with COPD and their blood hemoglobin (r = −356; p = 0.028). The results of our study suggest that higher doses of the trace elements Cu and Zn do not always have a negative effect in patients with COPD, while the toxicants Pb and Cd may be involved in COPD exacerbation and can be used as prognostic biomarkers for progression. Further studies are warranted to confirm these preliminary results.

Novel synthesis of multicomponent porous nano-hybrid composite, theoretical investigation using DFT and dye adsorption applications: disposing of waste with waste

Extensive studies have shown that doping can enhance the properties of graphene, but the application to real industrial wastewater treatment and theoretical calculations are limited. In this study, the hybrid nanoadsorbent Cu, N co-doped graphene (Cu@NG) was successfully synthesized via green route using carbon rods from waste dry batteries, human urine and copper nitrate, then multiple characterizations, detailed density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations and comprehensive actual wastewater tests are performed in environmental applications to investigate the adsorption properties and mechanism. The results showed that Cu@NG surface is mesoporous, decorated with CuO crystals and doped with N atoms. The isotherms and kinetics were simulated by Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The theoretical maximum sorption for MB and CV on Cu@NG is 116.28 mg·g^-1 and CV is 86.96 mg·g^-1, respectively. Pilot tests with Cu@NG on real textile wastewater showed that COD, BOD and color were removed by 54.2%, 55.2% and 86.4%, respectively. The desorption rate of Cu@NG is approximately above 90% for both MB and CV on Cu@NG after six cycles of treatment. The DFT calculations confirmed the experimental results as MB is more reactive than CV molecules. Besides, interactions have been systematically investigated via topology and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. The process mechanism involved mainly electrostatic adsorption, π-π stacking interactions and H-bonding interactions and ion exchange.

Foliar Fertilization by the Sol-Gel Particles Containing Cu and Zn

Silica particles with the size of 150-200 nm containing Ca, P, Cu or Zn ions were synthesized with the sol-gel method and tested as a foliar fertilizer on three plant species: maize Zea mays, wheat Triticum sativum and rape Brassica napus L. var napus growing on two types of soils: neutral and acidic. The aqueous suspensions of the studied particles were sprayed on the chosen leaves and also on the whole tested plants. At a specific stage of plant development determined according to the BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt und CHemische Industrie) scale, the leaves and the whole plants were harvested and dried, and the content of Cu and Zn was determined with the AAS (atomic absorption spectroscopy) method. The engineered particles were compared with a water solution of CuSO₄ and ZnSO₄ (0.1%) used as a conventional fertilizer. In many cases, the copper-containing particles improved the metal supply to plants more effectively than the CuSO₄. The zinc-containing particles had less effect on both the growth of plants and the metal concentration in the plants. All the tested particles were not toxic to the examined plants, although some of them caused a slight reduction in plants growth.

The Effect of Ultrasonic Agitation on the Seedless Growth of Cu on Ru-W Thin Films

Ru attracted considerable attention as a candidate to replace TaN as a diffusion barrier layer for Cu interconnect metallisation. The addition of W improves the diffusion barrier properties of Ru but appears to weaken the adhesion strength between the barrier and Cu and the direct (seedless) electroplatability behaviour. Although Cu can be directly electroplated on near equimolar Ru-W thin films, no complete substrate coverage is obtained. The understanding of Cu electrocrystallisation on Ru−W is essential to develop methods of fabricating thin, continuous, and well adherent films for advanced interconnect metallisation, where Ru−W thin films could be used as diffusion barriers. This work studies the effect of ultrasonic agitation on the growth of Cu films electroplated on Ru−W, namely on the impact on substrate coverage. Film structure, morphology and chemical composition were evaluated by digital and scanning and transmission electron microscopies, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that Cu particles decrease with increasing current density, but when no electrolyte agitation is applied, substrate coverage is incomplete in the central region, with openings around larger Cu particles, regardless of current density. Under ultrasonic agitation, substrate coverage is remarkably improved. An active particle detachment mechanism is proposed as responsible for attaining improved substrate coverage, only possible at intermediate current density. Lower current densities promote growth over nucleation, whereas higher currents result in extensive hydrogen reduction/formation. Ultrasonic agitation also enhances a preferential Cu growth along <111> direction.

Toxic Effect of Combined Exposure of Microplastics and Copper on Goldfish (Carassius auratus): Insight from Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, Apoptosis and Autophagy in Hepatopancreas and Intestine

The enhancement of the toxic effect of microplastics (MPs) on heavy metals and its mechanism needs more in-depth and systematic research. In this study, the copper (Cu) accumulation, histological injury, and expression of genes involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and autophagy of goldfish after single or combined exposure of MPs (1 mg/L) and Cu²⁺ (0.1 mg/L) for 7 days were determined. The results demonstrated that MPs enhanced the Cu accumulation in hepatopancreas and intestine of goldfish and induced more severe oxidative stress in the hepatopancreas and intestine of goldfish. Additionally, combined exposure of MPs and Cu induced inflammation, excessive apoptosis and insufficient autophagy in the hepatopancreas. Contrary, the inflammation and apoptosis were depressed in the intestine after combined exposure of MPs and Cu, which still requires further exploration. Hence, these findings provide further evidence for the threat of MPs and its adsorbed heavy metals.

A six-month study of anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination: A comparative analysis of essential trace elements and anti-RBD IgG sera levels

BACKGROUND

Although essential trace elements (ETEs) play pivotal roles in life-supporting biochemical processes, their function in innate and adaptive immunity has not been fully elucidated, particularly during immunization. Furthermore, the association between anti-SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG antibodies and ETE levels with vaccine responsiveness has not been investigated.

METHODS

The present study explored the status of ETEs (Mn, Cu, Zn, and Se) in sera of healthy women before and after vaccination with the anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a follow-up period of six months. The main aim was to explore links between ETE levels and IgG antibodies produced against Spike glycoprotein's Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD).

RESULTS

A recombinant protein of SARS-CoV-2 comprising the receptor binding domain was successfully expressed in HEK-293 T cells. The purified protein was suitable for producing a sensitive antibody detection assay for human serum and monitored seropositivity, indicating a transient response with peak anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels 2 months after vaccination. In parallel to increasing antibody titers, serum concentrations of Cu, Mn, and Se were not affected by vaccination, and concentrations remained relatively constant at the different sampling times during the 6-month observation period. Total serum Zn concentrations were slightly elevated when compared between the first and last sampling dates. Overall, no consistent effects of vaccination on any of the three trace elements analyzed in our study were observed.

CONCLUSION

Vaccination of adult healthy female volunteers with an mRNA vaccine was not associated with consistent changes in serum trace element concentrations over a six-month observation period.

Lipid-related metabolism during zebrafish embryogenesis under unbalanced copper homeostasis

Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element, playing an important role in lipid metabolism, and its transporters ATP7A and ATP7B, as Cu-transporting P-type ATPases, are involved in maintaining the Cu homeostasis in cells. Numerous studies in mammals have shown that Cu homeostasis and lipid metabolism are closely related, but studies on the link between the effects of excess Cu, ATP7A, and ATP7B on lipid metabolism during vertebrate embryogenesis are scarce. In this study, zebrafish disease models with Cu overload and ATP7A and ATP7B inactivation, respectively, were used to study the lipid metabolism-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) which were enriched in the models. The dynamic and spatiotemporal expressions of the DEGs in WTs, atp7a^-/-, and atp7b^-/- mutants with or without Cu stress were unveiled in this study and they mostly distributed in brain at 24 hpf then in liver and intestine at 96 hpf, suggesting their potential roles in lipid and glycogen metabolism to apply energy for normal development in zebrafish. Meanwhile, the correlation analysis for the DEGs among the three groups unveiled that most of the DEGs were involved in the glyceride metabolism pathway. This is the first report to establish the relationship between atp7a and atp7b with Cu-stimulated intestinal and liver lipid metabolism during fish embryogenesis, and this study will provide a theoretical basis for fish embryonic development and lipid metabolism disorders under unbalanced copper homeostasis.
