Comparative adsorption mechanism of doxycycline and Congo red using synthesized kaolinite supported CoFe2O4 nanoparticles

Mechanistic understanding of highly selective adsorption of bisphenols on microporous-dominated nitrogen-doped framework carbon

Producing a desirable adsorbent for removing endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) from aqueous solutions remains a major challenge. In this work, microporous-dominated nitrogen-doped framework carbons (MNFCs, s means the calcination temperature) with high specific surface area, ultra-microporous structure, and high nitrogen-doping can be obtained by a direct calcination of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid tetrasodium (EDTA-4Na) without aid of any catalyst and nitrogen source. MNFCs were applied adsorbents to remove bisphenols from aqueous solution. Batch experiments showed MNFC-750 had a large adsorption capacity for bisphenols from aqueous solutions (409 mg/g for bisphenol A, 364 mg/g for bisphenol F, and 521 mg/g for bisphenol S) along with short equilibrium time (30 min), and good stability and reusability. Using multiple characterizations and comparative experiments along with theoretical calculations, we discovered that: (1) nitrogen-doping can significantly boost the adsorption capacity; (2) adsorption sites are mainly the pyridinic-N instead of pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N; and (3) the adsorption mechanisms were mainly driven by Lewis acid-base interaction, hydrophobic interaction, π-π interaction and hydrogen bond interaction. These findings indicate that MNFCs present a promising potential for practical applications and shed light on the rational design of nitrogen doped carbon-based adsorbents for efficient pollutant removal.

Exploration of adsorption mechanism of 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid onto kaolinite and montmorillonite via batch experiment and theoretical studies

Two clay minerals, kaolinite (Kaol) and montmorillonite (Mt) with different crystal structures were chosen to investigate the comparative adsorption of 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC) through batch control experiments and theoretical studies. The systematical isotherm and kinetic studies agreed with Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, confirming a monolayer and chemisorption interaction process, respectively. The maximum removal capacities of Kaol and Mt for PBTC were 72.297 mg/g and 121.163 mg/g at pH=3.0 and T=298 K, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms were investigated by molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT). The Interface force field (IFF) was firstly introduced into Materials Studio package to explore the microscopic mechanism of clay mineral interface. The dynamics behaviors verified that the oxygen (O) atom of carboxyl group has stronger affinity at the external surface of Mt, which consistent with the experimental data well. For DFT calculations, quantitative analysis around molecular van der Waals (vdW) surface was adopted to predict reactive sites for the electrophilic reaction. Independent Gradient Model (IGM) and Hirshfeld surface analyses in Multiwfn indicated that the high adsorption effect mainly attributes to hydrogen bond action. These findings improve our ability to explore the related properties occurring at the interface of different clay minerals.

Instantaneous Adsorption of Synthetic Dyes from an Aqueous Environment Using Kaolinite Nanotubes: Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Studies

Innovative kaolinite nanotubes (KNTs) are synthesized utilizing a simple technique involving a sonication-induced exfoliation process, followed by chemical scrolling reactions. The KNTs as a material have high reactivity and promising surface area to be used in the purification of water from cationic dyes (safranin (SF) and malachite green (MG)) and anionic dyes (methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR)). The kinetic studies of the four dyes SF, MG, CR, and MO show an equilibration time interval of 240 min. The SF, MG, CR, and MO dyes' uptake reactions are in agreement with the kinetic behavior of the pseudo-first-order model and the equilibrium properties of the Langmuir model. Such modeling results, in addition to the Gaussian energies from the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model (SF (1.01 kJ/mol), MG (1.08 kJ/mol), CR (1.11 kJ/mol), and MO (1.65 kJ/mol)), hypothesize monolayer adsorption of the four dyes by physical reactions. The KNTs show theoretical q _max values of 431.6, 489.9, 626.2, and 675.5 (mg/g) for SF, MG, CR, and MO, respectively. The thermodynamic examination of SF, MG, CR, and MO adsorption reactions using KNTs verifies their adsorption by exothermic and spontaneous reactions. The KNT adsorbents achieve promising adsorption results in the presence of different coexisting ions and show significant recyclability properties. Therefore, the production of KNTs from kaolinite shows a strong effect on inducing the textural, physicochemical, and adsorption properties of clay layers as well as their affinity for different species of synthetic dyes.
