Superabsorbent polymers: A review on the characteristics and applications of synthetic, polysaccharide-based, semi-synthetic and ‘smart’ derivatives

Effect of sodium alginate molecular structure on electrospun membrane cell adhesion

Alginate-based electrospun nanofibers prepared via electrospinning technique represent a class of materials with promising applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. However, to date, the effect of alginate molecular mass and block composition on the biological response of such systems remains to some extent unclear. As such, in the present work, three alginates (i.e., M.pyr, L.hyp, A.nod) with different molecular features are employed to prepare nanofibers whose ability to promote cell adhesion is explored by using both skin and bone cell lines. Initially, a preliminary investigation of the raw materials is carried out via rheological and zeta-potential measurements to determine the different grade of polyelectrolyte behaviour of the alginate samples. Specifically, both the molecular mass and block composition are found to be important factors affecting the alginate response, with long chains and a predominance of guluronic moieties leading to a marked polyelectrolyte nature (i.e., lower dependence of the solution viscosity upon the polymer concentration). Subsequently, physically crosslinked alginate nanofibrous mats are first morphologically characterized via both scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, which show a homogenous and defect-free structure, and their biological response is then evaluated. Noticeably, fibroblast and keratinocyte cell lines do not show significant differences in terms of cell adhesion on the three mats (i.e., 30-40% and 10-20% with respect to the seeded cells, respectively), with the formers presenting a greater affinity toward the alginate-based nanofibers. Conversely, both the investigated osteoblast cells are characterized by a distinct behaviour depending on the alginate type. Specifically, polysaccharide samples with an evident polyelectrolyte nature are found to better promote cell viability (i.e., cell adhesion in the range 15-36% with respect to seeded cells) compared to the ones displaying a nearly neutral behaviour (i.e., cell adhesion in the range 5-25% with respect to seeded cells). Therefore, the obtained results, despite being preliminary, suggest that the alginate type (i.e., molecular structure properties) may play a topical role in conditioning the efficiency of healing patches for bone reparation, but it has a negligible effect in the case of skin regeneration.

Superabsorbent Polymer Network Degradable by a Human Urinary Enzyme

Owing to its superior water absorption capacity, superabsorbent polymer (SAP) based on a poly (acrylic acid) network is extensively used in industrial products such as diapers, wound dressing, or surgical pads. However, because SAP does not degrade naturally, a massive amount of non-degradable waste is discarded daily, posing serious environmental problems. Considering that diapers are the most widely used end-product of SAP, we created one that is degradable by a human urinary enzyme. We chose three enzyme candidates, all of which have substrates that were modified with polymerizable groups to be examined for cleavable crosslinkers of SAP. We found that the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) substrate, end-modified with acrylamide groups at sufficient distances from the enzymatic cleavage site, can be successfully used as a cleavable crosslinker of SAP. The resulting SAP slowly degraded over several days in the aqueous solution containing uPA at a physiological concentration found in human urine and became shapeless in ~30 days.

Applications of Absorbent Polymers for Sustainable Plant Protection and Crop Yield

Natural strategies for protecting the environment as well as plant, animal and human health is considered one of the main goals of developed countries. Recently, the use of absorbent polymers and hydrogel in agriculture has demonstrated several benefits for soil amendments, saving water content, reducing the consumption of soil nutrients, minimizing the negative impacts of dehydration and moisture stress in crops and controlling several phytopathogens. The seed-coating technology for establishing the crops is a recent common practice used for improving seed protection and enhancing plant growth. Coating materials include absorbent polymers and hydrogels based on growth regulators, pesticides, fertilizers and antagonist microorganisms. The current review has highlighted the importance of different types of superabsorbent polymers and hydrogels in an integrated strategy to protect seeds, plants and soil in a balanced manner to preserve the ecosystem.

The Opportunity of Valorizing Agricultural Waste, Through Its Conversion into Biostimulants, Biofertilizers, and Biopolymers

The problems arising from the limited availability of natural resources and the impact of certain anthropogenic activities on the environment must be addressed as soon as possible. To meet this challenge, it is necessary, among other things, to reconsider and redesign agricultural systems to find more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions, paying specific attention to waste from agriculture. Indeed, the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy should also involve the effective valorization of agricultural waste, which should be seen as an excellent opportunity to obtain valuable materials. For the reasons mentioned above, this review reports and discusses updated studies dealing with the valorization of agricultural waste, through its conversion into materials to be applied to crops and soil. In particular, this review highlights the opportunity to obtain plant biostimulants, biofertilizers, and biopolymers from agricultural waste. This approach can decrease the impact of waste on the environment, allow the replacement and reduction in the use of synthetic compounds in agriculture, and facilitate the transition to a sustainable circular economy.

A nappies management by-product for the treatment of uranium-contaminated waters

The direct disposal of municipal solid waste such as nappies to the environment may create serious pollution problems. Based on the circular economy and waste management concepts, the conversion of nappies and/or their ingredients (such as super absorbent polymer (SAP)) to high added value products is of great importance. In this work, a modified SAP (MSAP) was examined as an adsorbent for treatment of contaminated waters and uranium recovery. Batch experiments and spectroscopic techniques were used to examine the effect of various parameters (pH, contact time, temperature, initial concentration, and ionic strength), and the mechanism of adsorption U(VI) and desorption process. The U(VI) concentration was determined by alpha spectroscopy after addition of ²³²U standard tracer solution to account for possible interferences during electrodeposition and alpha particle counting. The maximum adsorption monolayer capacity was found to be 217.4 mg/g at pH 4.0 and at 298 K. The adsorption of U(VI) on MSAP seems to occur mainly via the formation of inner-sphere surface complexes between U(VI) and the carboxylic surface moieties of MSAP. The MSAP could satisfactorily be regenerated with 0.1 M Na₂CO₃ (>90%) and it also shows a promising applicability to real wastewaters contaminated with U(VI).

One-step sustainable synthesis of cationic high-swelling polymers obtained from starch-derived maltodextrins

The good water solubility displayed by most starch-derived maltodextrins has limited their use when specific mechanical properties are required, particularly when working in aqueous media. As a result, numerous attempts to cross-link such polysaccharides to obtain cross-linked polymers have been reported; in this context, non-toxic and biocompatible water-soluble diglycidyl ethers have performed well. Besides, amines are commonly used as curing agents in combination with diglycidyl ethers for the production of epoxy resins. For this reason, amine-mediated epoxy ring-opening reactions of 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether have been studied as approaches to obtain sustainable cross-linked polymers suitable for eco-friendly scaling-up, based upon commercial starch-derived maltodextrins, using water as a unique solvent.

Synthesis of ZnO/SiO2-modified starch-graft-polyacrylate superabsorbent polymer for agricultural application

A bio-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) for agricultural application was synthesized from modified starch (MS) to enhance its antibacterial property and biodegradability. The starch was modified by zinc oxide and tetraethyl orthosilicate via a sol-gel reaction under an acidic condition. Structural and morphological examinations were used to confirm the modification. The MS showed a good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with 61.9 % and 99.9 % reduction in viable cells, respectively, after a 1 h exposure. The MS was then graft copolymerized with potassium acrylate monomer to synthesize a new MS-g-polyacrylate (PA) SAP. The grafting reaction was confirmed and the main factors for agricultural applications along with its biodegradation and antibacterial properties were achieved. The MS-g-PA SAP exhibited an excellent reusability and biodegradation. Importantly, the MS-g-PA SAP did not impose growth inhibition of mung bean (Vigna radiata), but provided some transient drought relief.

Biosourced Polysaccharide-Based Superabsorbents

In the last decades, many studies have been conducted on new materials to meet a growing industrial demand and to move scientific research forward. Superabsorbents are good examples of materials that have generated special attention in many fields for their ability to absorb and retain water up to 1000 times of their dry weight. They found many applications in hygiene products and other products, for a fast growing market of USD 9.58 Billion in 2019. Most of them are composed of synthetic polymers, which are often not environmentally friendly. Therefore, natural superabsorbents and particularly those based on polysaccharides have received a recent increased interest for their biodegradability, biocompatibility, and renewability. This review focuses on polysaccharide-based superabsorbents, on their properties, synthesis methods, and characterization. Their potential applications in many fields, such as biomedical and hygiene, agriculture, water treatment, and the building sector, are also reported with an interest in products already marketed.

A Mini-Review on Chitosan-Based Hydrogels with Potential for Sustainable Agricultural Applications

Agriculture is an important sector of the economy, but this industry consumes significant amounts of water, which is a precious and limited natural resource. Irrigation techniques and efforts to mitigate water usage influence the growth, survival, and yield of crops. However, superabsorbent polymers in combination with fertilizers can be employed to obtain sustained release of nutrients and improved water retention capacity of the soil. Despite significant recent progress in this area involving synthetic polyacrylate hydrogels, there are no industrially applicable solutions exhibiting similar performance using natural biopolymers or synthetic polymers enriched with natural components. This review focuses on biodegradable chitosan-based hydrogels (both natural and semi-synthetic), and discusses their potential agricultural and horticultural applications. The methods for synthesizing hydrogels via physical or chemical crosslinking, and the resulting functional properties of recently reported hydrogels, such as water retention and release of active ingredients, are presented herein.

Trends in 3D bioprinting for esophageal tissue repair and reconstruction

In esophageal pathologies, such as esophageal atresia, cancers, caustic burns, or post-operative stenosis, esophageal replacement is performed by using parts of the gastrointestinal tract to restore nutritional autonomy. However, this surgical procedure most often does not lead to complete functional recovery and is instead associated with many complications resulting in a decrease in the quality of life and survival rate. Esophageal tissue engineering (ETE) aims at repairing the defective esophagus and is considered as a promising therapeutic alternative. Noteworthy progress has recently been made in the ETE research area but strong challenges remain to replicate the structural and functional integrity of the esophagus with the approaches currently being developed. Within this context, 3D bioprinting is emerging as a new technology to facilitate the patterning of both cellular and acellular bioinks into well-organized 3D functional structures. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in tissue engineering for esophageal reconstruction with a specific focus on 3D bioprinting approaches in ETE. Current biofabrication techniques and bioink features are highlighted, and these are discussed in view of the complexity of the native esophagus that the designed substitute needs to replace. Finally, perspectives on recent strategies for fabricating other tubular organ substitutes via 3D bioprinting are discussed briefly for their potential in ETE applications.

Application of cellulose nanocrystals prepared from agricultural wastes for synthesis of starch-based hydrogel nanocomposites: Efficient and selective nanoadsorbent for removal of cationic dyes from water

A novel and bio-based hydrogel nanocomposite were developed using reinforcement of starch grafted copolymers of 2-acrylamido-2methyl propane sulfonate and acrylic acid (starch-g-(AMPS-co-AA)) hydrogel with magnetite-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (MCNCs). The MCNCs-hydrogel was utilized as a proficient and environmentally benign nanoadsorbent for removal of cationic dyes with great capacity and selectivity. Sugar-beet pulp (SBP) was exploited for CNCs production through acid hydrolysis of enzymatic-mediated SBP. Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were anchored on CNCs to synthesize MCNCs as the nanofiller of MCNCs/starch-g-(AMPS-co-AA) hydrogel. The synthesis of CNCs, MCNCs and hydrogel nanocomposite were confirmed using FESEM, FTIR, VSM and TGA analyses. Hydrogel nanocomposite showed excellent and reusable capacity for specific adsorption of cationic dyes. The effects of nanoadsorbent dosage, time, pH, dye initial concentration, and temperature on the adsorption were scrutinized for two model cationic dyes (crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB). Adsorption capacities for CV and MB were 2500.0 mg/g and 1428.6 mg/g, respectively.

Effects of Super-Absorbent Polymer on Soil Remediation and Crop Growth in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas

The water-retaining and yield-increasing capacity of super-absorbent polymer (SAP) are essential for soil remediation in arid and semi-arid areas. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the influencing factors and mechanisms of SAP effects on soil environments and crop growth for the precise management of agricultural water-saving irrigation. In this study, we adopted SAP as a soil conditioner and monitored changes in soil temperature, photosynthetic rate, leaf transpiration rate, chlorophyll, crop growth indexes (plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index, dry matter accumulation), and yield under different SAP doses during the growth stage of maize, on the basis of which the improvement mechanism of SAP in arid and semi-arid soil was analyzed. The results demonstrated the following: (1) 45 kg/hm2 of SAP application could increase the temperature of the soil layer, effectively reduce the diurnal temperature variation of the soil surface, and promote the stable growth of maize; (2) when different SAP doses were applied, the leaf surface temperature of maize increased by 0.95 °C on average. In particular, when 135 kg/hm2 of SAP was applied, the leaf surface temperature increased by 1.55 °C; (3) SAP could promote the photosynthetic rate of maize. In addition, the plant height, leaf area index, and dry matter accumulation of maize gradually increased with an increasing amount of SAP; (4) the application of SAP not only increased the grain row number, ear row number, and average 100-seed weight, but also increased the crop yield by nearly 6%. The application of SAP demonstrated a comprehensive utility (redistribution of soil water and temperature, synergy between SAPs and plants), which suggests that the most basic goal, to ensure socio-economic and ecological sustainability in dryland systems, was obtained.

Design and Preparation of New Multifunctional Hydrogels Based on Chitosan/Acrylic Polymers for Drug Delivery and Wound Dressing Applications

The dynamic evolution of materials with medical applications, particularly for drug delivery and wound dressing applications, gives impetus to design new proposed materials, among which, hydrogels represent a promising, powerful tool. In this context, multifunctional hydrogels have been obtained from chemically modified chitosan and acrylic polymers as cross-linkers, followed by subsequent conjugation with arginine. The hydrogels were finely tuned considering the variation of the synthetic monomer and the preparation conditions. The advantage of using both natural and synthetic polymers allowed porous networks with superabsorbent behavior, associated with a non-Fickian swelling mechanism. The in vitro release profiles for ibuprofen and the corresponding kinetics were studied, and the results revealed a swelling-controlled release. The biodegradability studies in the presence of lysozyme, along with the hemostatic evaluation and the induced fibroblast and stem cell proliferation, have shown that the prepared hydrogels exhibit characteristics that make them suitable for local drug delivery and wound dressing.

Developing Nano-Delivery Systems for Agriculture and Food Applications with Nature-Derived Polymers

The applications of nanotechnology are wide ranging, and developing functional nanomaterials for agri-food applications from nature-derived polymers is widely conceived as a sustainable approach that is safer for human and animal consumption. In light of this, this review focuses on the advances in the development of nano-delivery systems using nature-derived polymers for agri-food applications. The review opens with a section detailing the different types of nature-derived polymers currently being used in various applications in the agri-food industry with a special mention on microbial extracellular polymeric materials. The major applications of nano-delivery systems in the food sector, such as food fortification and food preservation, as well as in the agricultural sector for controlled release of agrochemicals using nature-derived polymers are discussed. The review ends with a perspective on the safety and public perception of nano-enabled foods with a concluding remark on future directions of incorporating nano-delivery systems for agri-food purposes.

Removal of methylene blue via bioinspired catecholamine/starch superadsorbent and the efficiency prediction by response surface methodology and artificial neural network-particle swarm optimization

This paper demonstrates coupling of the artificial neural network (ANN) technique with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method and compares the performance of ANN-PSO with response surface methodology (RSM) in prediction of the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) by a novel bio-superadsorbent. To this, a starch-based superadsorbent was synthesized using acrylic acid and acryl amid polymers and then catecholamine functional groups were combined onto the surface with oxidative polymerization of dopamine. The adsorption of MB was considered as a function of pH, dye concentration, and contact time. The best topology of the ANN was found to be 3-7-1, and prediction model of the adsorption capacity was demonstrated as a matrix of explicit equations. ANN-PSO is more accurate than RSM. The results revealed that the root-mean-square error, correlation coefficient, and normalized standard deviation for the ANN-PSO are 22.46, 0.99, and 16.83, respectively, while for RSM are 82.89, 0.98, and 65.41, respectively.

Evaluation of the Synergistic Antioxidant Effect of Resveratrol and Zataria multiflora Boiss Essential Oil in Sodium Alginate Bioactive Films

BACKGROUND

Biodegradable films are appropriate alternatives to synthetic polymers due to their potential to enhance food safety and their function as a carrier for wide a range of food additives especially natural antioxidants.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to compare the potential antioxidant activities of sodium alginate films containing resveratrol (RES) alone and in combination with Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZEO) using an in vitro model.

METHODS

At first, the major chemical compositions of ZEO were evaluated by GC/MS. Then, the amount of phenolic compounds of sodium alginate films were evaluated by total phenolic contents assay and antioxidant activities of films were evaluated by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. Finally, the concentrations of ZEO and RES which showed better antioxidant activities in sodium alginate films were incorporated to films in combination forms to evaluate their synergistic effects.

RESULTS

According to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis, 35 compounds of ZEO were identified and Thymol (37.94%), p-Cymene (9.50%) and 3-Carene (4.98%) were the most important compounds of essential oil, respectively. The results of the radical scavenging evaluations, showed better antioxidant activities of the films containing RES than the films containing ZEO and Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Also, the combined uses of ZEO and RES into alginate films had the synergistic effects (P<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Therefore, it can be concluded that alginate films incorporated with the combination of ZEO and RES is the appropriate option to postpone the oxidative reactions and can be used as natural antioxidant in the food packaging industry.
