Nanocellulose-based composites for the removal of contaminants from wastewater

Preparation of a Hybrid Membrane from Whey Protein Fibrils and Activated Carbon to Remove Mercury and Chromium from Water

Water contamination by mercury and chromium has a direct effect in human health. A promising technology to remove heavy metals by membrane filtration is the use of hybrid membranes produced with whey protein fibrils (WPF) and activated carbon (AC). In this study, the best conditions to produce WPF by heat treatment were determined to maximize the removal of mercury and chromium from water using a central composed design. The results indicated that the best conditions to prepare WPF were 74 °C, 7 h and 3.8% of whey protein with adsorption capacities of 25 and 18 mg/g and removal efficiencies of 81 and 57% for mercury and chromium, respectively. WPF and AC were used to prepare a hybrid membrane that was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements. Batch filtration experiments were performed with the hybrid membrane for chromium and mercury removal at 25, 50 and 100 mg/L to determine its adsorption capacities. A high performance of the hybrid membrane was demonstrated removing efficiently mercury and chromium from water, thus supporting more than ten filtration cycles.

A combined molecular dynamic simulation, DFT calculations, and experimental study of the eriochrome black T dye adsorption onto chitosan in aqueous solutions

This study aims to evaluate and understand the adsorption of eriochrome black T (EB) by chitosan extracted from local shrimp shells under different experimental conditions. Chitosan samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR. Experimental results indicate that the process was pH-dependent with a high adsorption capacity in acidic medium. The adsorption was rapid and kinetic data were suitably correlated to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. EB molecules were adsorbed on monolayer according to the Langmuir model with an adsorption capacity of 162.3 mg/g. On the other hand, it should be noted that calculated quantum chemical parameters support the experimentally obtained results. The interaction energies calculated for (molecule/chitosan) complexes were in the order of H₂EB^- > HEB^2- (O38) > HEB^2- (O48) > EB > H₃EB > EB^3-, which means that the best and possible adsorption process can take place with H₂EB^- form. The molecular dynamics (MD) approach was performed to illuminate the nature of the relationship between the EB and the chitosan (110) surface. It was found that the chitosan (110) surface adsorbs EB molecule in a nearby parallel orientation. The higher negative adsorption energy determined for the H₂EB^- implies that the adsorption mechanism is the typical chemisorption.

Carboxymethyl cellulose improved adsorption capacity of polypyrrole/CMC composite nanoparticles for removal of reactive dyes: Experimental optimization and DFT calculation

In this study, polypyrrole/carboxymethyl cellulose nanocomposite particles (PPy/CMC NPs) were synthesized and applied for removal of reactive red 56 (RR56)and reactive blue 160 (RB160) as highly toxic dyes. The amount of CMC was found significantly effective on the surface adsorption efficiency. Different optimization methods including the genetic programming, response surface methodology, and artificial neural network (ANN) were used to optimize the effect of different parameters including pH, adsorption time, initial dye concentration and adsorbent dose. The maximum adsorption of RR56 and RB160 were found under the following optimum conditions: pH of 4 and 5, adsorption time of 55 min and 52 min for RR56 and RB160, respectively, initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L and adsorbent dose of 0.09 g for both dyes. were obtained for RR56 and RB160, respectively. Also, the results indicated that ANN method could predict the experimental adsorption data with higher accuracy than other methods. The analysis of ANN results indicated that the adsorbent dose is the main factor in RR56 removal, followed by time, pH and initial concentration, respectively. However, initial concentration mostly determines the RB160 removal process. The isotherm data for both dyes followed the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 104.9 mg/g and 120.7 mg/g for RR56 and RB160, respectively. In addition, thermodynamic studies indicated the endothermic adsorption process for both studied dyes. Moreover, DFT calculations were carried out to obtain more insight into the interactions between the dyes and adsorbent. The results showed that the hydrogen bondings and Van der Waals interactions are dominant forces between the two studied dyes and PPy/CMC composite. Furthermore, the interaction energies calculated by DFT confirmed the experimental adsorption data, where PPy/CMC resulted in higher removal of both dyes compared to PPy. The developed nanocomposite showed considerable reusability up to 3 cylces of the batch adsorption process.

A nanocomposite paper comprising calcium silicate hydrate nanosheets and cellulose nanofibers for high-performance water purification

Removal of soluble organic and inorganic contaminants from wastewater to produce clean water has received much attention recently. However, the simultaneous enhancement of water permeability and removal efficiency is still a challenge for filtration membranes. Here, we present a new kind of nanocomposite paper (CSH/CNF) consisting of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) nanosheets and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), and demonstrate the rapid water filtration and highly efficient contaminant (e.g., dyes, proteins, and metal ions) adsorption properties. The CNFs can serve as the bridging material to connect the CSH nanosheets to form a porous network structure and vital channels in the CSH/CNF paper for rapid water transportation. The weight ratio of CSH nanosheets in the paper is up to 75–85%. The weight ratio of CSH nanosheets has a significant effect on the water permeability and removal efficiency. The water permeability of the CSH/CNF paper with 82.5 wt% CSH nanosheets reaches as high as 312.7 L m⁻² h⁻¹ bar⁻¹, which is about 14.7 times that of the CSH/CNF paper with 75 wt% CSH nanosheets. Because of the high specific surface area and abundant adsorption sites of CSH nanosheets, the CSH/CNF paper with 82.5 wt% CSH nanosheets exhibits high adsorption capacities and removal efficiencies for methyl blue (242.6 mg g⁻¹, 97.3%), bovine serum albumin (289.2 mg g⁻¹, 98.5%) and Pb²⁺ ions (366.2 mg g⁻¹, 98.2%). The CSH/CNF nanocomposite paper holds great potential for application in environmental wastewater purification.

Cellulose Nanocrystals/Graphene Hybrids-A Promising New Class of Materials for Advanced Applications

With the growth of global fossil-based resource consumption and the environmental concern, there is an urgent need to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, which exhibit promising properties and could maintain an acceptable level of performance to substitute the petroleum-based ones. As elite nanomaterials, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) derived from natural renewable resources, exhibit excellent physicochemical properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility and have attracted tremendous interest nowadays. Their combination with other nanomaterials such as graphene-based materials (GNM) has been revealed to be useful and generated new hybrid materials with fascinating physicochemical characteristics and performances. In this context, the review presented herein describes the quickly growing field of a new emerging generation of CNC/GNM hybrids, with a focus on strategies for their preparation and most relevant achievements. These hybrids showed great promise in a wide range of applications such as separation, energy storage, electronic, optic, biomedical, catalysis and food packaging. Some basic concepts and general background on the preparation of CNC and GNM as well as their key features are provided ahead.

Nanocellulose: From Fundamentals to Advanced Applications

Over the past few years, nanocellulose (NC), cellulose in the form of nanostructures, has been proved to be one of the most prominent green materials of modern times. NC materials have gained growing interests owing to their attractive and excellent characteristics such as abundance, high aspect ratio, better mechanical properties, renewability, and biocompatibility. The abundant hydroxyl functional groups allow a wide range of functionalizations via chemical reactions, leading to developing various materials with tunable features. In this review, recent advances in the preparation, modification, and emerging application of nanocellulose, especially cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), are described and discussed based on the analysis of the latest investigations (particularly for the reports of the past 3 years). We start with a concise background of cellulose, its structural organization as well as the nomenclature of cellulose nanomaterials for beginners in this field. Then, different experimental procedures for the production of nanocelluloses, their properties, and functionalization approaches were elaborated. Furthermore, a number of recent and emerging uses of nanocellulose in nanocomposites, Pickering emulsifiers, wood adhesives, wastewater treatment, as well as in new evolving biomedical applications are presented. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of NC-based emerging materials are discussed.
