Appropriate human intervention stimulates the development of microbial communities and soil formation at a long-term weathered bauxite residue disposal area

Insights into variations on dissolved organic matter of bauxite residue during soil-formation processes following 2-year column simulation

Bauxite residue, an industrial alkaline solid waste, has a low organic carbon content which hinders plant growth. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) drives many biogeochemical processes including carbon storage and soil formation in soils. Input of exogenous organic materials may provide organic carbon and accelerate soil formation processes in bauxite residue. However, the potential effects of ameliorants on the quantity and quality of DOM in bauxite residue are still poorly understood. Here, the integration of ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra, fluorescence spectra, and parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis were used to investigate the vertical characteristics of DOM in bauxite residue treated by PV (the combined addition of 2% phosphogypsum and 4% vermicompost, w/w) and BS (6% w/w including 4% bagasse and 2% bran) with 2-year column experiments. The content of DOM in untreated residues ranged from 0.064 to 0.096 g/kg, whilst higher contents of DOM were observed in PV (0.13 g/kg) and BS (0.26 g/kg) treatment. Meanwhile, with the increase of residue depth, the aromaticity and hydrophobic components of DOM in residue decreased, which indicated that the degree of humification of the treated residues in the upper layer was higher than that in the lower layer. Compared with BR, BS and PV treatment accumulated the related content of fulvic acid-like substance from 36.14% to 71.33% and 74.86%, respectively. The incorporation of vermicompost and biosolids increased the content of humic-like substances, whilst decreasing the content of protein-like substances in the surface layer, which may be due to the enrichment of the microbial community. During soil formation processes, the application of organic amendments reduced both salinity and alkalinity, enhanced microbial community diversity, and changed the quantity and quality of DOM in bauxite residue. These findings improve our understanding of the dynamics of DOM and response of DOM to soil formation processes in bauxite residue.

Structural and Predicted Functional Diversities of Bacterial Microbiome in Response to Sewage Sludge Amendment in Coastal Mudflat Soil

The study investigated the influence of sewage sludge application at rates of 0 (CK), 30 (ST), 75 (MT), and 150 (HT) t ha−1 to mudflats on bacterial community diversity and predicted functions using amplicon-based sequencing. Soils under sewage sludge treatments, especially the HT treatment, exhibited lower pH, salinity and higher nutrient contents (C, N, and P). Moreover, restructured bacterial communities with significantly higher diversities and distinct core and unique microbiomes were observed in all sewage sludge-amended soils as compared to the control. Specifically, core bacterial families, such as Hyphomicrobiaceae, Cytophagaceae, Pirellulaceae Microbacteriaceae, and Phyllobacteriaceae, were significantly enriched in sewage sludge-amended soils. In addition, sewage sludge amendment significantly improved predicted functional diversities of core microbiomes, with significantly higher accumulative relative abundances of functions related to carbon and nitrogen cycling processes compared to the unamended treatment. Correlation analyses showed that modified soil physicochemical properties were conducive for the improvement of diversities of bacterial communities and predicted functionalities. These outcomes demonstrated that sewage sludge amendment not only alleviated saline–sodic and nutrient deficiency conditions, but also restructured bacterial communities with higher diversities and versatile functions, which may be particularly important for the fertility formation and development of mudflat soils.

Bioengineered Microbes for Soil Health Restoration - Present Status and Future

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), soil health is declining over the decades and it has an adverse impact on human health and food security. Hence, soil health restoration is a need of the hour. It is known that microorganisms play a vital role in remediation of soil pollutants like heavy metals, pesticides, hydrocarbons, etc. However, the indigenous microbes have a limited capacity to degrade these pollutants and it will be a slow process. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can catalyze the degradation process as their altered metabolic pathways lead to hypersecretions of various biomolecules that favor the bioremediation process. This review provides an overview on the application of bioengineered microorganisms for the restoration of soil health by degradation of various pollutants. It also sheds light on the challenges of using GMOs in environmental application as their introduction may affect the normal microbial community in soil. Since soil health also refers to the potential of native organisms to survive, the possible changes in the native microbial community with the introduction of GMOs are also discussed. Finally, the future prospects of using bioengineered microorganisms in environmental engineering applications to make the soil fertile and healthy have been deciphered. With the alarming rates of soil health loss, the treatment of soil and soil health restoration need to be fastened to a greater pace and the combinatorial efforts unifying GMOs, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, and other soil amendments will provide an effective solution to soil heath restoration ten years ahead.

Variation, distribution, and diversity of canonical ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms and complete-nitrifying bacteria in highly contaminated ecological restoration regions in the Siding mine area

Canonical ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and complete-nitrifying bacteria (comammox) exist in a variety of ecosystems. However, little is known about AOA, AOB and comammox or their contributions to nitrification in the soils of heavily degraded and acidic mine regions. In the present study, the activity, richness, diversity and distribution patterns of AOA, AOB and comammox in the Siding mine area were investigated. Nemerow's multifactor pollution index (P_N) values indicated that the soil in all three areas in the Siding mine area was highly contaminated by Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn and Cu. The AOA, AOB and comammox amoA gene copy numbers exhibited significant positive correlations with Pb and Zn levels and P_N values, which indicated that the populations of AOA, AOB and comammox underwent adaptation and reproduction in response to pollution from multiple metals in the Siding mine area. Among them, the abundance of AOA was the highest, and AOA may survive better than AOB and comammox under such severely pollution-stressed and ammonia-limited conditions. The phyla Thaumarchaeota and Crenarchaeota may play vital roles in the soil ammonia oxidation process. Unlike AOA, AOB may use soil available phosphorus to help them compete for NH₃ and other limiting nutrients with AOA and heterotrophs. Moreover, soil organic matter was the main factor influencing the species diversity of AOB, the β-diversity of AOB and comammox, and the community composition of AOA, AOB and comammox. Our research will help to explain the role and importance of AOA, AOB and comammox in the different ecological restoration regions in the Siding mine area.

Thiol-functionalized nano-silica for in-situ remediation of Pb, Cd, Cu contaminated soils and improving soil environment

Heavy metal contamination has been threatening the health of human beings. To decrease the bio-toxicity of heavy metals, a thiol-functionalized nano-silica (SiO₂-SH) was adopted to remediate the soil contaminated by lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu). The remediation effect of SiO₂-SH on contaminated soils was investigated by the uptake of the heavy metals into lettuce and pakchoi in pot experiment. The bio-toxicity of the SiO₂-SH was evaluated, and its immobilization mechanisms were proposed by the fraction distribution of Cd, Pb and Cu. It was found that the SiO₂-SH can significantly reduce the uptake of Cd, Pb, Cu into pakchoi by 92.02%, 68.03%, 76.34% and into lettuce by 89.81%, 43.41%, 5.76%, respectively. The chemical species analyses of Cd, Pb, Cu indicate SiO₂-SH can transform the heavy metal in acid soluble states into reducible fraction and oxidizable fraction, thereby inhibiting the extraction of heavy metals into soil solution. The concentrations of microbial biomass carbon, organic matter, and cation exchange capacity of the soil increased while the soil bulk density decreased after remediation. Those changes demonstrate that SiO₂-SH not only has no bio-toxic impact on the soil environment but also improves the soil environment, which proves the prepared SiO₂-SH is environmental-friendly. The SiO₂-SH could be a promising amendment for heavy metal contaminated soils.
