Abstract
We used isotension-ensemble Monte Carlo simulations to study the properties of brush layers of bottle-brush polymers under lateral compression. The polymers were represented by a freely jointed hard-bead model with one side chain grafted to each bead of the main chain, and we considered variations in side-chain length and bead size. Brush properties, including brush height and surface pressure, were analyzed in the context of a generalized box model. The surface pressure was found to have a steeper dependence on the grafting density than predicted by classical theories of polymer brushes. This discrepancy could be traced to the equation of state of the polymer fluid composing the brush, which was found to be more reminiscent of the concentrated regime than of the semidilute conditions normally expected in polymer brushes. The conformational properties of individual polymer molecules were found to be insensitive to lateral compression; in particular, the side-chain end-to-end distance remained essentially constant.

Abstract
Dendritic polymers with highly branching structures exhibit many unique properties. In this paper, a computational study using the Wang-Landau sampling technique is carried out to reveal the phase transition behaviours of dendritic homopolymers with various branching structures. Two types of dendritic homopolymers, dendrimers/dendrigrafts (D/D) and hyperbranched (HB) polymers are studied. It is found that with increasing degree of branching in the dendritic polymer, the liquid-solid (LS) transition temperature increases and the coil-globule (CG) transition becomes weak. Additionally, under similar degrees of branching and polymerization, D/D polymers have a higher LS transition temperature than HB polymers. The reason is that the D/D polymers have greater regularity in the radial distribution of the branching units, which facilitates monomer packing during the LS transition. The distinctive internal unit distribution at various temperatures is quantitatively analysed. Our results show the importance of dendritic polymer structure regularity in phase transition behaviours and are valuable in guiding the structural design of dendritic macromolecules for functionalization applications.

Abstract
Surface topography and work function maps were simultaneously obtained for carbon surfaces modified by a dendritic molecule: 3,5-Bis (3,5-dinitrobenzoylamino) benzoic acid. The dendrons were spontaneously assembled onto highly ordered pyrolytic graphite samples, exhibiting an increase in the surface potential. This fact is consistent with the incorporation of an electron-acceptor functional group that remains electroactive on the surface.

Abstract
Dendritic polymers are highly branched, globular architectures with multiple representations of functional groups. These nanoscale organic frameworks continue to fascinate researchers worldwide and are today under intensive investigation in application-driven research. A large number of potential application areas have been suggested for dendritic polymers, including theranostics, biosensors, optics, adhesives and coatings. The transition from potential to real applications is strongly dictated by their commercial accessibility, scaffolding ability as well as biocompatibility. A dendritic family that fulfills these requirements is based on the 2,2-bismethylolpropionic acid (bis-MPA) monomer. This critical review is the first of its kind to cover most of the research activities generated on aliphatic polyester dendritic architectures based on bis-MPA. It is apparent that these scaffolds will continue to be in the forefront of cutting-edge research as their structural variations are endless including dendrons, dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers, dendritic-linear hybrids and their hybridization with inorganic surfaces.

Abstract
We investigate structural and thermodynamic properties of surface-grafted layers of model "bottle-brush" polymers by Monte Carlo simulation. The polymers consist of a longer main chain densely grafted with shorter side chains, of which the latter have some degree of affinity to the surface. Our focus is on the effect of the side-chain surface affinity on the brush properties, which we study in terms of compression isotherms spanning a broad range of grafting densities. For low grafting densities, side-chain adsorption causes the polymers to spread on the surface. As the grafting density is increased, the layer goes through a "pancake-to-brush" transition to form a brush with the main chains aligned perpendicular to the surface. We find that side-chain adsorption is decisive for the structure of dilute layers and in the transition region but has little influence on the properties of dense brushes. The close relation between compression and adsorption isotherms is discussed, and the implications of side-chain adsorption for the ability of the polymer to form a dense brush are investigated. This analysis suggests that side-chain surface affinity alone will not give rise to "brush of bottle-brushes" layers by adsorption of polymers from solution, in agreement with recent experimental results.

Abstract
Covalently tethered well-defined new three-arm star hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA) brushed nanoparticles on silicon surface have been successfully prepared by (i) synthesis a novel type of three-arm star-shaped preceding initiator, trifunctional hydroxy-based N-allyl-3,4,5-trihydroxybenzamide (NATHB), (ii) UV-induced hydrosilylation of NATHB with the hydrogen-termined Si(100) (Si-NATHB surface), (iii) coupling of 2-bromo isobutyrl bromide with the hydroxyl of NATHB by the esterification to provide the initiators (Si–NATHB–R3Br) for the subsequent ATRP, (iv) surface-initiated ATRP of PEGMA and 2-hydroxyethl methacrylate monomethacrylate (HEMA) to give the linear Si–NATHB–g–P(PEGMA) brushes and the Si–NATHB–g–P(HEMA) surface, (v) further coupling of 2-bromo isobutyrl bromide with the hydroxyl of P(HEMA) by the esterification to produce the macroinitiators (Si–NATHB–g–P(HEMA)-R3Br) and (vi) surface-initiated ATRP of PEGMA to give the comb-shaped Si–NATHB–g–P(HEMA)–g–P(PEGMA) brushes surface. Kinetics study indicated that the chain growth of P(PEGMA) and P(HEMA) from the functionalized silicon surfaces was consistent with a “controlled” or “living” process. The chemical composition and functionality of the silicon surface were tailored by the well-defined star linear and comb-shaped P(PEGMA) brushes, which provide with this type of surface structures formed in three brushes under conditions of spatial constraints imposed by their chemical connection to a single grafting site. XPS spectra testify that the linear and comb-shaped P(PEGMA) have been grafted on the Si-NATHB surface. AFM imaging of the hydrophilic polymer brushed nanoparticles imaged distinctive morphology when they were prepared into linear and comb-shaped brushes structure.

Abstract
A nondestructive way to achieve remote, reversible, light-controlled tunable permeability of ultrathin shell microcapsules is demonstrated in this study. Microcapsules based on poly{[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium iodide} (PMETAI) star polyelectrolyte and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) were prepared by a layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. We demonstrated stable microcapsules with controlled permeability with the arm number of a star polymer having significant effect on the assembly structure: the PMETAI star with 18 arms shows a more uniform and compact assembly structure. We observed that in contrast to regular microcapsules from linear polymers, the permeability of the star polymer microcapsules could be dramatically altered by photoinduced transformation of the trivalent hexacyanocobaltate ions into a mixture of mono- and divalent ions by using UV irradiation. The reversible contraction of PMETAI star polyelectrolyte arms and the compaction of star polyelectrolytes in the presence of multivalent counterions are considered to cause the dramatic photoinduced changes in microcapsule properties observed here. Remarkably, unlike the current mostly destructive approaches, the light-induced changes in microcapsule permeability are completely reversible and can be used for light-mediated loading/unloading control of microcapsules.

Abstract
Although chrome is considered as the major tanning agent in the production of all types of hides and leather worldwide, it represents a serious source of environmental pollution. Therefore, polyamidoamine hyperbranched polymer (HPAM) was involved in pretanning of the depickled hides to enhance the chromium uptake during the tanning process. The key parameters which affect the exhaustion and fixation of chrome tan including shrinkage temperature of the tanned leather were studied. The results showed a significant improvement in the chrome exhaustion, the shrinkage temperature, and the texture and softness of the leather treated by HPAM.

Abstract
Amphiphiles with a dendritic structure are attractive materials as they combine the features of dendrimers with the self-assembling properties and interfacial behavior of water-air affinities. We have synthesized three generations of polyester dendrimers and studied their interfacial properties on the Langmuir films. The behavior obtained was, as a rule, the lowest generation dendrimers behaving like traditional amphiphiles and the larger molecules presenting complicated isotherms. The Langmuir films of these compounds have been characterized by their surface pressure versus molecular area (π/A) and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) observations.

Abstract
This paper details the synthesis of a well-defined hyperbranched polymer using a slow monomer addition method. The polymerization under slow monomer addition conditions results in a very low monomer concentration actually present in the reaction mixture, and the exclusive reaction of the monomer with the growing polyfunctional macromolecules occurs, resulting in a high molecular weight and a high degree of branching value. Thus, the slow monomer addition is a versatile and preferential method for the controlled synthesis of a well-defined hyperbranched polymer with both a high molecular weight and a high degree of branching value.

Abstract
We report the formation and characterization of stable dispersions of hybrid nanoparticles in solution formed via stereocomplexation of enantiomeric poly(lactide) hybrid star polymers. The hybrid starlike polymers, having polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanocages as the core and either poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) or poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) as the arms, are synthesized via ring-opening polymerization of lactide using octafunctional POSS as the macroinitiator. In the solid state, differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements confirmed the formation of the stereocomplex in the mixture of POSS-star-PLLA and POSS-star-PDLA (50:50, wt %). In a solution of the same mixture in tetrahydrofuran (THF), sterocomplexation leads to formation of hybrid nanaoparticles. Detailed accounts of the nanoparticle formation and influence of aging and concentration have been presented. It was observed that at low concentration the stereocomplexed nanaoparticles remain stable over 45 days and are not sensitive to dilution, suggesting the formation of a stable hybrid nanoparticle dispersion in solution. In contrast, the aggregates of the individual POSS-star-PLLA or POSS-star-PDLA in THF, formed via weak solvophobic interactions, tended to disintegrate into smaller aggregates on dilution. Exploiting the PLLA-PDLA stereocomplexation with an appropriate molecular design can be a versatile route to develop stable organic/inorganic hybrid nanoparticle dispersions.

Abstract
We report on the growth of gold nanoparticles in polystyrene/poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS/P2VP) star-shaped block copolymer monolayers. These amphiphilic PS(n)P2VP(n) heteroarm star copolymers differ in molecular weight (149,000 and 529,000 Da) and the number of arms (9 and 28). Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition was utilized to control the spatial arrangement of P2VP arms and their ability to reduce gold nanoparticles. The PS(n)P2VP(n) monolayer acted as a template for gold nanoparticle growth because of the monolayer's high micellar stability at the liquid-solid interface, uniform domain morphology, and ability to adsorb Au ions from the water subphase. UV-vis spectra and AFM and TEM images confirmed the formation of individual gold nanoparticles with an average size of 6 ± 1 nm in the P2VP-rich outer phase. This facile strategy is critical to the formation of ultrathin polymer-gold nanocomposite layers over large surface areas with confined, one-sided positioning of gold nanoparticles in an outer P2VP phase at polymer-silicon interfaces.

Abstract
We report the self-assembly of monolayers of spider silk-like block copolymers. Langmuir isotherms were obtained for a series of bioengineered variants of the spider silks, and stable monolayers were generated. Langmuir-Blodgett films were prepared by transferring the monolayers onto silica substrates and were subsequently analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Static contact angle measurements were performed to characterize interactions across the interface (thin film, water, air), and molecular modeling was used to predict 3D conformation of spider silk-like block copolymers. The influence of molecular architecture and volume fraction of the proteins on the self-assembly process was assessed. At high surface pressure, spider silk-like block copolymers with minimal hydrophobic block (f(A) = 12%) formed oblate structures, whereas block copolymer with a 6-fold larger hydrophobic domain (f(A) = 46%) formed prolate structures. The varied morphologies obtained with increased hydrophobicity offer new options for biomaterials for coatings and related options. The design and use of bioengineered protein block copolymers assembled at air-water interfaces provides a promising approach to compare 2D microstructures and molecular architectures of these amphiphiles, leading to more rationale designs for a range of nanoengineered biomaterial needs as well as providing a basis of comparison to more traditional synthetic block copolymer systems.
