An electrochemical sensor for high sensitive determination of lysozyme based on the aptamer competition approach

Protein is a kind of basic substance that constitutes a life body. The determination of protein is very important for the research of biology, medicine, and other fields. Lysozyme is relatively small and simple in structure among all kinds of proteins, so it is often used as a standard target detector in the study of aptamer sensor for protein detection. In this paper, a lysozyme electrochemical sensor based on aptamer competition mechanism is proposed. We have successfully prepared a signal weakening electrochemical sensor based on the lysozyme aptamer competition mechanism. The carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified on the glassy carbon electrode, and the complementary aptamer DNA with amino group was connected to MWCNTs. Because of the complementary DNA of daunomycin into the electrode, the electrochemical signal is generated. When there is a target, the aptamer binds to lysozyme with higher binding power, and the original complementary chain breaks down, resulting in the loss of daunomycin inserted into the double chain and the weakening of electrochemical signal. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to determine lysozyme, the response range was 1–500 nM, the correlation coefficient was 0.9995, and the detection limit was 0.5 nM. In addition, the proposed sensor has good selectivity and anti-interference.

A Molecularly Imprinted Sol-Gel Electrochemical Sensor for Naloxone Determination

A molecularly imprinted sol-gel is reported for selective and sensitive electrochemical determination of the drug naloxone (NLX). The sensor was developed by combining molecular imprinting and sol-gel techniques and electrochemically grafting the sol solution onto a functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube modified indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode. The sol-gel layer was obtained from acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of a solution composed of triethoxyphenylsilane (TEPS) and tetraethoxysilane (TES). The fabrication, structure and properties of the sensing material were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. Parameters affecting the sensor's performance were evaluated and optimized. A sensor fabricated under the optimized conditions responded linearly between 0.0 µM and 12 µM NLX, with a detection limit of 0.02 µM. The sensor also showed good run-to-run repeatability and batch-to-batch performance reproducibility with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 2.5-7.8% (n = 3) and 9.2% (n = 4), respectively. The developed sensor displayed excellent selectivity towards NLX compared to structurally similar compounds (codeine, fentanyl, naltrexone and noroxymorphone), and was successfully used to measure NLX in synthetic urine samples yielding recoveries greater than 88%.

Metal Nanoparticles for Electrochemical Sensing: Progress and Challenges in the Clinical Transition of Point-of-Care Testing

With the rise in public health awareness, research on point-of-care testing (POCT) has significantly advanced. Electrochemical biosensors (ECBs) are one of the most promising candidates for the future of POCT due to their quick and accurate response, ease of operation, and cost effectiveness. This review focuses on the use of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) for fabricating ECBs that has a potential to be used for POCT. The field has expanded remarkably from its initial enzymatic and immunosensor-based setups. This review provides a concise categorization of the ECBs to allow for a better understanding of the development process. The influence of structural aspects of MNPs in biocompatibility and effective sensor design has been explored. The advances in MNP-based ECBs for the detection of some of the most prominent cancer biomarkers (carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cancer antigen 125 (CA125), Herceptin-2 (HER2), etc.) and small biomolecules (glucose, dopamine, hydrogen peroxide, etc.) have been discussed in detail. Additionally, the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) ECBs have been briefly discussed. Beyond that, the limitations and challenges that ECBs face in clinical applications are examined and possible pathways for overcoming these limitations are discussed.

Advanced materials-integrated electrochemical sensors as promising medical diagnostics tools: A review

Electrochemical sensors have increasingly been linked with terms as modern biomedically effective highly selective and sensitive devices, wearable and wireless technology, portable electronics, smart textiles, energy storage, communication and user-friendly operating systems. The work brings the overview of the current advanced materials and their application strategies for improving performance, miniaturization and portability of sensing devices. It provides the extensive information on recently developed (bio)sensing platforms based on voltammetric, amperometric, potentiometric and impedimetric detection modes including portable, non-invasive, wireless, and self-driven miniaturized devices for monitoring human and animal health. Diagnostics of selected free radical precursors, low molecular biomarkers, nucleic acids and protein-based biomarkers, bacteria and viruses of today's interest is demonstrated.

Recent Advances in Electrochemical Monitoring of Chromium

The extensive use of chromium by several industries conducts to the discharge of an immense quantity of its various forms in the environment which affects drastically the ecological and biological lives especially in the case of hexavalent chromium. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors are useful devices for chromium determination. In the last five years, several sensors based on the modification of electrode surface by different nanomaterials (fluorine tin oxide, titanium dioxide, carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanoparticles and nanocomposite) and biosensors with different biorecognition elements (microbial fuel cell, bacteria, enzyme, DNA) were employed for chromium monitoring. Herein, recent advances related to the use of electrochemical approaches for measurement of trivalent and hexavalent chromium from 2015 to 2020 are reported. A discussion of both chromium species detections and speciation studies is provided.

Graphene oxide quantum dots immobilized on mesoporous silica: preparation, characterization and electroanalytical application

Because of its high surface area and combination of various functional groups, graphene oxide (GO) is currently one of the most actively studied materials for electroanalytical applications. It is not practical to utilize self-supported GO on its own and thus it is commonly integrated with different supporting carriers. Having a large lateral size, GO can only wrap the particles of the support and thus can significantly reduce the surface area of porous materials. To achieve synergy from the high surface area and polyfunctional nature of GO, and the rigid structure of a porous support, the lateral size of GO must essentially be decreased. Recently reported graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) can fulfil this task. Here we report the successful preparation of an SiO₂-GOQDs hybrid, where GOQDs have been incorporated into the mesoporous network of silica. The SiO₂-GOQDs emit a strong luminescence with a band maximum at 404 nm. The Raman spectrum of SiO₂-GOQDs shows two distinct peaks at 1585 cm⁻¹ (G-peak) and 1372 cm⁻¹ (D-peak), indicating the presence of a graphene ordered basal plane with aromatic sp²-domains and a disordered oxygen-containing structure. Covalent immobilization of GOQDs onto aminosilica via such randomly structured oxygen fragments was proven with the help of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state cross-polarization magic angle spinning ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. SiO₂-GOQDs were used as a modifier of a carbon paste electrode for differential pulse voltammetry determination of two antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and two endocrine disruptors (diethylstilbestrol (DES) and estriol (EST)). The modified electrodes demonstrated a significant signal enhancement for EST (370%) and DES (760%), which was explained by a π–π stacking interaction between GOQDs and the aromatic system of the analytes.

Well-Defined Conjugated Macromolecules Based on Oligo(Arylene Ethynylene)s in Sensing

Macromolecules with well-defined structures in terms of molar mass and monomer sequence became interesting building blocks for modern materials. The precision of the macromolecular structure makes fine-tuning of the properties of resulting materials possible. Conjugated macromolecules exhibit excellent optoelectronic properties that make them exceptional candidates for sensor construction. The importance of chain length and monomer sequence is particularly important in conjugated systems. The oligomer length, monomer sequence, and structural modification often influence the energy bang gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the molecules that reflect in their properties. Moreover, the supramolecular aggregation that is often observed in oligo-conjugated systems is usually strongly affected by even minor structural changes that are used for sensor designs. This review discusses the examples of well-defined conjugated macromolecules based on oligo(arylene ethynylene) skeleton used for sensor applications. Here, exclusively examples of uniform macromolecules are summarized. The sensing mechanisms and importance of uniformity of structure are deliberated.

Applying CRISPR-Cas12a as a Signal Amplifier to Construct Biosensors for Non-DNA Targets in Ultralow Concentrations

Efficient signal amplification is essential to construct ultrasensitive biosensors for biologically relevant species with abundant concomitant interferences. Here, we apply LbaCas12a as a signal amplifier to develop a versatile CRISPR-Cas12a platform to detect a wide range of analytes in ultralow concentrations. The platform relies on the indiscriminate single-stranded DNase activity of LbaCas12a, which recognizes single-stranded DNA intermediates generated by non-DNA targets down to femtomolar concentrations and subsequently enhances the fluorescence signal output. With the help of functional nucleotides (DNAzyme and aptamer), ultrasensitive bioassays for Pb²⁺ and Acinetobacter baumannii have been designed with a limit of detection down to ∼0.053 nM and ∼3 CFU/mL, respectively. It also allows simultaneous detection of four microRNAs (miRNAs) at a picomolar concentration without significant interferences by other counterparts, suggesting the potential of multiplexed miRNA expression profiles analysis in high throughput. Given the versatility and generality of the CRISPR-Cas12a platform, we expect the current work to advance the application of CRISPR-Cas-based platforms in bioanalysis and provide new insights into ultrasensitive biosensor design.

Hybrid Sol-gel Coatings for Corrosion Mitigation: A Critical Review

The corrosion process is a major source of metallic material degradation, particularly in aggressive environments, such as marine ones. Corrosion progression affects the service life of a given metallic structure, which may end in structural failure, leakage, product loss and environmental pollution linked to large financial costs. According to NACE, the annual cost of corrosion worldwide was estimated, in 2016, to be around 3%-4% of the world's gross domestic product. Therefore, the use of methodologies for corrosion mitigation are extremely important. The approaches used can be passive or active. A passive approach is preventive and may be achieved by emplacing a barrier layer, such as a coating that hinders the contact of the metallic substrate with the aggressive environment. An active approach is generally employed when the corrosion is set in. That seeks to reduce the corrosion rate when the protective barrier is already damaged and the aggressive species (i.e., corrosive agents) are in contact with the metallic substrate. In this case, this is more a remediation methodology than a preventive action, such as the use of coatings. The sol-gel synthesis process, over the past few decades, gained remarkable importance in diverse areas of application. Sol-gel allows the combination of inorganic and organic materials in a single-phase and has led to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) coatings for several applications, including for corrosion mitigation. This manuscript succinctly reviews the fundamentals of sol-gel concepts and the parameters that influence the processing techniques. The state-of-the-art of the OIH sol-gel coatings reported in the last few years for corrosion protection, are also assessed. Lastly, a brief perspective on the limitations, standing challenges and future perspectives of the field are critically discussed.

Metal-polymer hybrid nanomaterial for impedimetric detection of human papillomavirus in cervical specimens

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the main sexually transmitted pathogens that infect the anogenital epithelium and mucous membranes. HPV genotypes can be classified as high and low oncogenic risk, with infection by the former resulting in cervical cancer in approximately 100 % of the cases. In this work, we developed an ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor for the detection and identification of different HPV genotypes. A nanostructured platform based on a matrix of polyaniline (PANI) containing gold nanoparticles (AuNps) was designed for the chemical immobilization of a DNA probe capable of recognizing different HPV types. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the genosensor. The impedimetric responses indicate that the proposed sensor was able to detect HPV (types 6, 11, 16, 31, 33, 45, and 58) in cervical specimens (cDNA samples). We obtained different profiles of electrochemical responses for the high and low-risk HPV genotypes. By adopting a three-dimensional quantitative analysis of impedance response variables, it was possible to identify the existence of a pattern of association for samples of high oncogenic risk, which may lead to the differential diagnosis of HPV. The biosensor demonstrated an excellent analytical performance for the detection of HPV genotypes with high sensibility and selectivity. The genosensor exhibited a linear range of response in the 1 pg μL^-1 to 100 pg μL^-1 range. Besides, a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.74 pg μL^-1 and 7.43 pg μL^-1 was obtained for HPV11 and HPV16, respectively, with regression coefficients of 99.88 % and 99.47 %. Thus, the proposed sensor may serve as a good prognostic indicator for patients infected with papillomavirus.

Reactive Insertion of PEDOT-PSS in SWCNT@Silica Composites and its Electrochemical Performance

Hybrid silica-modified materials were synthesized on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes by electroassisted deposition of sol-gel precursors. Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were dispersed in a silica matrix (SWCNT@SiO2) to enhance the electrochemical performance of an inorganic matrix. The electrochemical behavior of the composite electrodes was tested against the ferrocene redox probe. The SWCNT@SiO2 presents an improvement in the electrochemical performance towards ferrocene. The heterogeneous rate constant of the SWCNT@SiO2 can be enhanced by the insertion of poly(3,4-Ethylendioxythiophene)-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) PEDOT-PSS within the silica matrix, and this composite was synthesized successfully by reactive electrochemical polymerization of the precursor EDOT in aqueous solution. The SWCNT@SiO2-PEDOT-PSS composite electrodes showed a heterogeneous rate constant more than three times higher than the electrode without conducting polymer. Similarly, the electroactive area was also enhanced to more than twice the area of SWCNT@SiO2-modified electrodes. The morphology of the sample films was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Dendrimers as Soft Nanomaterials for Electrochemical Immunosensors

Electrochemical immunosensors are antibody-based affinity biosensors with a high impact on clinical, environmental, food, and pharmaceutical analysis. In general, the analytical performance of these devices is critically determined by the materials and reagents used for their construction, signal production and amplification. Dendrimers are monodisperse and highly branched polymers with three-dimensional structures widely employed as “soft” nanomaterials in electrochemical immunosensor technology. This review provides an overview on the state-of-the-art in dendrimer-based electrochemical immunosensors, focusing on those using polyamidoamine and poly (propylene imine) dendrimers. Special emphasis is given to the most original methods recently reported for the construction of immunosensor architectures incorporating dendrimers, as well as to novel sensing approaches based on dendrimer-assisted signal enhancement strategies.

Nanomaterials for Healthcare Biosensing Applications

In recent years, an increasing number of nanomaterials have been explored for their applications in biomedical diagnostics, making their applications in healthcare biosensing a rapidly evolving field. Nanomaterials introduce versatility to the sensing platforms and may even allow mobility between different detection mechanisms. The prospect of a combination of different nanomaterials allows an exploitation of their synergistic additive and novel properties for sensor development. This paper covers more than 290 research works since 2015, elaborating the diverse roles played by various nanomaterials in the biosensing field. Hence, we provide a comprehensive review of the healthcare sensing applications of nanomaterials, covering carbon allotrope-based, inorganic, and organic nanomaterials. These sensing systems are able to detect a wide variety of clinically relevant molecules, like nucleic acids, viruses, bacteria, cancer antigens, pharmaceuticals and narcotic drugs, toxins, contaminants, as well as entire cells in various sensing media, ranging from buffers to more complex environments such as urine, blood or sputum. Thus, the latest advancements reviewed in this paper hold tremendous potential for the application of nanomaterials in the early screening of diseases and point-of-care testing.

Magnetic Fluorescence Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Based on FeOx/ZnS Nanocomposites for Highly Selective Sensing of Bisphenol A

In this study, magnetic fluorescence molecularly imprinted polymers were fabricated and used for the selective separation and fluorescence sensing of trace bisphenol A (BPA) in environmental water samples. The carboxyl-functionalized FeO_x magnetic nanoparticles were conjugated with mercaptoethylamine-capped Mn²⁺ doped ZnS quantum dots to prepare magnetic FeO_x and ZnS quantum dot nanoparticles (FeO_x/ZnS NPs). Additionally, molecular imprinting on the FeO_x/ZnS NPs was employed to synthesize core-shell molecularly imprinted polymers. The resulting nanoparticles were well characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, vibrating sample magnetometer and fluorescence spectra, and the adsorption behavior was investigated. Binding experiments showed that the molecularly imprinted FeO_X/ZnS NPs (FeO_x/ZnS@MIPs) exhibited rapid fluorescent and magnetic responses, and high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of bisphenol A (BPA). The maximum adsorption capacity of FeO_x/ZnS@MIPs was 50.92 mg·g^-1 with an imprinting factor of 11.19. Under optimal conditions, the constructed fluorescence magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers presented good linearity from 0 to 80 ng mL^-1 with a detection limit of 0.3626 ng mL^-1 for BPA. Moreover, the proposed fluorescence magnetic polymers were successfully applied to on-site magnetic separation and real-time fluorescence analysis of target molecule in real samples.

Electrochemical-based biosensors for microRNA detection: Nanotechnology comes into view

Nanotechnology plays an undeniable significant role in medical sciences, particularly in the field of biomedicine. Development of several diagnostic procedures in medicine has been possible through the beneficial application of nano-materials, among which electrochemical nano-biosensors can be mentioned. They can be employed to quantify various clinical biomarkers in detection, evaluation, and follow up stages of the illnesses. MicroRNAs, a group of regulatory short RNA fragments, added a new dimension to the management and diagnosis of several diseases. Mature miRNAs are single-stranded RNA molecules approximately 22 nucleotides in length, which regulate a vast range of biological functions from cellular proliferation and death to cancer development and progression. Recently, diagnostic value of miRNAs in various diseases has been demonstrated. There are many traditional methods for detection of miRNAs including northern blotting, quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR), microarray technology, nanotechnology-based approaches, and molecular biology tools including miRNA biosensors. In comparison with other techniques, electrochemical nucleic acid biosensor methods exhibit many interesting features, and could play an important role in the future nucleic acid analysis. This review paper provides an overview of some different types of nanotechnology-based biosensors for detection of miRNAs.

Electrochemical sensors and biosensors based on the use of polyaniline and its nanocomposites: a review on recent advances

Polyaniline and its composites with nanoparticles have been widely used in electrochemical sensor and biosensors due to their attractive properties and the option of tuning them by proper choice of materials. The review (with 191 references) describes the progress made in the recent years in polyaniline-based biosensors and their applications in clinical sensing, food quality control, and environmental monitoring. A first section summarizes the features of using polyaniline in biosensing systems. A subsequent section covers sensors for clinical applications (with subsections on the detection of cancer cells and bacteria, and sensing of glucose, uric acid, and cholesterol). Further sections discuss sensors for use in the food industry (such as for sulfite, phenolic compounds, acrylamide), and in environmental monitoring (mainly pesticides and heavy metal ions). A concluding section summarizes the current state, highlights some of the challenges currently compromising performance in biosensors and nanobiosensors, and discusses potential future directions. Graphical abstract Schematic presentation of electrochemical sensor and biosensors applications based on polyaniline/nanoparticles in various fields of human life including medicine, food industry, and environmental monitoring. The simultaneous use of suitable properties polyaniline and nanoparticles can provide the fabrication of sensing systems with high sensitivity, short response time, high signal/noise ratio, low detection limit, and wide linear range by improving conductivity and the large surface area for biomolecules immobilization.

Recent Advances in Biosensors Based Nanostructure for Pharmaceutical Analysis

Background:

The development of novel nanostructures for pharmaceutical analysis has received great attention. Biosensors are a class of analytical techniques competent in the rapid quantification of drugs. Recently, the nanostructures have been applied for modification of biosensors.

Objective:

The goal of the present study is to review novel nanostructures for pharmaceutical analysis by biosensors.

Method:

In this review, the application of different biosensors was extensively discussed.

Results:

Biosensors based nanostructures are a powerful alternative to conventional analytical techniques, enabling highly sensitive, real-time, and high-frequency monitoring of drugs without extensive sample preparation. Several examples of their application have been reported.

Conclusion:

The present paper reviews the recent advances on the pharmaceutical analysis of biosensor based nanostructures.

Electrodeposition⁻Assisted Assembled Multilayer Films of Gold Nanoparticles and Glucose Oxidase onto Polypyrrole-Reduced Graphene Oxide Matrix and Their Electrocatalytic Activity toward Glucose

The study reports a facile and eco-friendly approach for nanomaterial synthesis and enzyme immobilization. A corresponding glucose biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and glucose oxidase (GOD) multilayer films onto the polypyrrole (PPy)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) via the electrodeposition and self-assembly. PPy and graphene oxide were first coated on the surface of a bare GCE by the electrodeposition. Then, AuNPs and GOD were alternately immobilized onto PPy-RGO/GCE electrode using the electrodeposition of AuNPs and self-assembly of GOD to obtain AuNPs-GOD multilayer films. The resulting PPy-RGO-(AuNPs-GOD)_n/GCE biosensors were used to characterize and assess their electrocatalytic activity toward glucose using cyclic voltammetry and amperometry. The response current increased with the increased number of AuNPs-GOD layers, and the biosensor based on four layers of AuNPs-GOD showed the best performance. The PPy-RGO-(AuNPs-GOD)₄/GCE electrode can detect glucose in a linear range from 0.2 mM to 8 mM with a good sensitivity of 0.89 μA/mM, and a detection limit of 5.6 μM (S/N = 3). This study presents a promising eco-friendly biosensor platform with advantages of electrodeposition and self-assembly, and would be helpful for the future design of more complex electrochemical detection systems.

Writing in a Polyaniline Film with Laser Beam and Stability of the Record: A Raman Spectroscopy Study

Lines were drawn on polyaniline (PANI) salt films with laser beam, and then the samples were left to age in air at room temperature. Both the irradiated and intact parts of the sample and their ageing were studied with Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the laser-written record is reasonably stable. The degradation of polyaniline by laser irradiation and ageing was compared to the changes in PANI during heating. In all cases, deprotonation and crosslinking of PANI chains proceed but the relative rates of the processes vary with degradation conditions.

Recent advances in designing nanomaterial based biointerfaces for electrochemical biosensing cardiovascular biomarkers

Early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is critically important for successful treatment and recovery of patients. At present, detection of CVD at early stages of its progression becomes a major issue for world health. The nanoscale electrochemical biosensors exhibit diverse outstanding properties, rendering them extremely suitable for the determination of CVD biomarkers at very low concentrations in biological fluids. The unique advantages offered by electrochemical biosensors in terms of sensitivity and stability imparted by nanostructuring the electrode surface together with high affinity and selectivity of bioreceptors have led to the development of new electrochemical biosensing strategies that have introduced as interesting alternatives to conventional methodologies for clinical diagnostics of CVD. This review provides an updated overview of selected examples during the period 2005-2018 involving electrochemical biosensing approaches and signal amplification strategies based on nanomaterials, which have been applied for determination of CVD biomarkers. The studied CVD biomarkers include AXL receptor tyrosine kinase, apolipoproteins, cholesterol, C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, fibrinogen (Fib), glucose, insulin, interleukins, lipoproteins, myoglobin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and troponins (Tns) on electrochemical transduction format. Identification of new specific CVD biomarkers, multiplex bioassay for the simultaneous determination of biomarkers, emergence of microfluidic biosensors, real-time analysis of biomarkers and point of care validation with high sensitivity and selectivity are the major challenges for future research.

From electrochemistry to enzyme kinetics of cytochrome P450

This review is an attempt to describe advancements in the electrochemistry of cytochrome P450 enzymes (EC 1.14.14.1) and to study molecular aspects and catalytic behavior of enzymatic electrocatalysis. Electroanalysis of cytochrome P450 demonstrates how to translate theoretical laws and equations of classical electrochemistry for the calculation of the kinetic parameters of enzymatic reactions and then translation of kinetic parameters to interpretation of drug-drug interactions. The functional significance of cytochrome P450s (CYPs) includes the metabolism of drugs, foreign chemicals, and endogenic compounds. The pharmaceutical industry needs sensitive and cost-effective systems for screening new drugs and investigation of drug-drug interactions. The development of different types of CYP-based biosensors is now in great demand. This review also highlights the characteristics of electrode processes and electrode properties for optimization of the cytochrome P450 electroanalysis. Electrochemical cytochrome P450-biosensors are the most studied. In this review, we analyzed electrode/cytochrome P450 systems in terms of the mechanisms underlying P450-catalyzed reactions. Screening of potential substrates or inhibitors of cytochromes P450 by means of electrodes were described.

Smart Portable Devices Suitable for Cultural Heritage: A Review

This article reviews recent portable sensor technologies to apply in the Cultural Heritage (CH) fields. The review has been prepared in the form of a retrospective description of the sensor's history and technological evolution, having: new nanomaterials for transducers, miniaturized, portable and integrated sensors, the wireless transmission of the analytical signals, ICT_Information Communication Technology and IoT_Internet of Things to apply to the cultural heritage field. In addition, a new trend of movable tattoo sensors devices is discussed, referred to in situ analysis, which is especially important when scientists are in the presence of un-movable and un-tangible Cultural Heritage and Art Work objects. The new proposed portable contact sensors (directly applied to art work objects and surfaces) are non-invasive and non-destructive to the different materials and surfaces of which cultural heritage is composed.
