Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin (βCD), the less water soluble of the cyclodextrins, has been used as a capping agent in the preparation of semiconductor nanocrystals or quantum dots (QDs). Nevertheless, no reports have been found in the use of the highly water-soluble polymer of this, prepared by the crosslinking of the βCD units with epichlorohydrin in basic medium (βCDP). This polymer, besides to overcome the low solubility of the βCD, increases the inclusion constant of the guest; two parameters that deserve its use as capping agent, instead of the native cyclodextrin. In the present manuscript, we afforded the in-situ aqueous preparation of cadmium telluride (CdTe) QDs capped with βCDP. The polymer influence on the photoluminescent properties of the nanocrystals was analyzed. The βCDP controls the nanocrystals growth during the Oswald ripening stage. Consequently, the CdTe capped βCDP QDs showed lower Stokes-shift values, higher photoluminescent efficiency, and narrower size distribution than for nanocrystals obtained in the absence of polymer. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis revealed the composition and crystallinity of the CdTe QDs. This βCDP capped CdTe QDs is a potential scaffold for the supramolecular modification of QDs surface.

Abstract
The greatest challenge of wastewater treatment is the removal of trace concentrations of persistent micropollutants in the presence of the high concentration of effluent organic matter (EfOM). Micropollutant removal by sorbents is a common practice, but sorbent employment is often limited because of fouling induced by EfOM and challenging sorbent regeneration. We directly addressed these two issues by designing regenerable dual-site composite sorbents based on polymerized β-cyclodextrin, modified with a cationic group (pCD+) and adsorbed to montmorillonite (pCD+-MMT). This dual-site composite was tailored to simultaneously target an emerging micropollutant, bisphenol A (BPA), through inclusion in β-cyclodextrin cavities and target anionic EfOM compounds, through electrostatic interactions. The removal of BPA from treated wastewater by the composite was not compromised despite the high removal of EfOM. The composites outperformed many recently reported sorbents. Differences in composite performance was discussed in terms of their structures, as characterized with TGA, XRD, BET and SEM. The simultaneous filtration of BPA and EfOM from wastewater by pCD+-MMT columns was demonstrated. Furthermore, successful in-column regeneration was obtained by selectively eluting EfOM and BPA, with brine and alkaline solutions, respectively. Finally, the composites removed trace concentrations of numerous high priority micropollutants from treated wastewater more efficiently than commercial activated carbon. This study highlights the potential to design novel dual-site composites as selective and regenerable sorbents for advanced wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this work, host⁻guest supramolecular hydrogels were prepared from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm) microgels utilizing electrostatic and host/guest self-assembly. First, pNIPAm microgels bearing a poly(acrylic acid) (pAAc) shell were coated with positively charged β-cyclodextrin polymers. Addition of adamantane-substituted dextrans (Dex-Ada) allowed us to establish interparticle connections through β-cyclodextrin-adamantane (βCD-Ada) inclusion complex formation, and thus to prepare hierarchical hydrogels. Under the conditions of hydrogel formation, close contact between the microgels was ensured. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of doubly crosslinked microgels prepared by noncovalent crosslinking via host⁻guest interactions. The prepared macrogels were studied with rheology, and fast mechanical response to temperature variation was found. Furthermore, the hydrogels exhibit fully reversible temperature-induced gel⁻sol transition at the physiological temperature range (37⁻41 °C), due to the synergetic effect between shrinking of the microgels and dissociation of βCD-Ada crosslinks at higher temperatures. This opens up attractive prospects of their potential use in biomedical applications.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are naturally occurring cyclic oligosaccharides bearing a basket-shaped topology with an "inner-outer" amphiphilic character. The abundance of hydroxyl groups enables CDs to be functionalized with multiple targeting ligands and imaging elements. The imaging time, and the payload of different imaging elements, can be tuned by taking advantage of the commercial availability of CDs with different sizes of the cavity. This review aims to offer an outlook of the chemistry and engineering of CDs for the development of molecular probes. Complexation thermodynamics of CDs, and the corresponding implications for probe design, are also presented with examples demonstrating the structural and physiochemical roles played by CDs in the full ambit of molecular imaging. We hope that this review not only offers a synopsis of the current development of CD-based molecular probes, but can also facilitate translation of the incremental advancements from the laboratory to real biomedical applications by illuminating opportunities and challenges for future research.

Abstract
Cross-linked cellulose-epichlorohydrin polymers were synthesized by a conventional heating with stirring (C-EP heating) and a parallel process using ultra-sonication (C-EP sonication) in the presence of aqueous ammonia. Structural characterization of modified cellulose was carried out using FTIR/13C solid state NMR spectroscopy and thermal methods (DSC and TGA). Evidence of products with variable textural properties and morphology was supported by nitrogen gas adsorption, solvent swelling, and microscopy (SEM, TEM) results. C-EP sonication possess greater cross-linker content judging by the loss of the cellulose fibril structure which was facilitated by acoustic cavitation effects due to ultra-sonication. Equilibrium sorption studies in aqueous solution with 2-naphthoxy acetic acid (NAA) revealed that C-EP heating had slightly greater sorption capacity than C-EP sonication at alkaline pH. By contrast, C-EP sonication had greater uptake of NAA at acidic pH. Kinetic uptake studies at pH 3 is described by the pseudo-second order model, where the surface sites of C-EP heating became saturated within ca. 75 min; whereas, ca. 350 min occurred for C-EP sonication. This study demonstrates that the yield of sonication assisted cross-linking of cellulose is greater with improved adsorption properties. The study also reveals the utility of sonication assisted synthesis for the valorization and utilization of cellulose modified materials.

Abstract
Fluoranthene (FT) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), consisting of naphthalene and benzene rings connected by a five-member ring. It is widespread in the environment. The hydrophobicity of FT limits its availability for biological uptake and degradation. In this study, hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin oligomers (HP-β-CD-ol) were synthesized with epichlorohydrin (EP), while the solubility enhancement of FT by HP-β-CD-ol was investigated in water. The synthesized HP-β-CD-ol was characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS), ¹H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The solubility of FT increased 178-fold due to the complex formation with HP-β-CD oligomers. The inclusion complexes of FT/HP-β-CD-ol were analyzed using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Nuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy Nuclear magnetic resonance (NOESY NMR) spectroscopy. On the basis of these results, HP-β-CD-ol is recommended as a potential solubilizer for the development of PAH removal systems.

Abstract
This work evaluates an approach to improve the enhanced heavy oil recovery performance of hydrophobic associating polymer. A polymeric system based on water-soluble hydrophobic associating polymer (WSHAP) and cyclodextrin (CD) polymer was proposed in this work. Addition of CD polymer to WSHAP forms interpolymer bridges by inclusion of CD groups with hydrophobic tails, and thereby the network structure is strengthened. The proposed system offers good viscoelasticity, pronounced shear thinning, and interesting viscosity-temperature relations. Sand pack tests indicated that the proposed system can build high resistance factor during the propagation in porous media, and its moderate adsorption phenomenon was represented by the thickness of the adsorbed layer. The relationship between effective viscosity and oil recovery increment indicated that the proposed system can significantly reduce the residual oil saturation due to the “piston-like” propagation. The overall oil recovery was raised by 5.7 and 24.5% of the original oil in place compared with WSHAP and partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), respectively.

Abstract
Development of a delivery system which can effectively carry hydrophobic drugs and have pH response is becoming necessary. Here we demonstrate that through preparation of β-cyclodextrin polymer (β-CDP), a hydrophobic drug molecule of ibuprofen (IBU) was incorporated into our prepared β-CDP inner cavities, aiming to improve the poor water solubility of IBU. A core-shell capsule structure has been designed for achieving the drug pH targeted and sustained release. This delivery system was built with polysaccharide polymer of Sodium alginate (SA), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) by physical cross-linking. The drug pH-response control release is this hydrogel system's chief merit, which has potential value for synthesizing enteric capsule. Besides, due to our simple preparing strategy, optimal conditions can be readily determined and the synthesis process can be accurately controlled, leading to consistent and reproducible hydrogel capsules. In addition, phase-solubility method was used to investigate the solubilization effect of IBU by β-CDP. SEM was used to prove the forming of core and shell structure. FT-IR and 1H-NMR were also used to perform structural characteristics. By the technique of UV determination, the pH targeted and sustained release study were also performed. The results have proved that our prepared polysaccharide hydrogel capsule delivery system has potential applications as oral drugs delivery in the field of biomedical materials.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins and cyclodextrins-modified molecules have interesting and appealing properties due to their capacity to host components that are normally insoluble or poorly soluble in water. In this work, we investigate the interaction of a β-cyclodextrin polymer (poly-β-CD) with λ-DNA. The polymers are obtained by the reaction of β-CD with epichlorohydrin in alkaline conditions. We have used optical tweezers to characterize the changes of the mechanical properties of DNA molecules by increasing the concentration of poly-β-CD in the sample. The physical chemistry of the interaction is then deduced from these measurements by using a recently developed quenched-disorder statistical model. It is shown that the contour length of the DNA does not change in the whole range of poly-β-CD concentration (<300μM). On the other hand, significant alterations were observed in the persistence length that identifies two binding modes corresponding to the clustering of ∼2.6 and ∼14 polymer molecules along the DNA double helix, depending on the polymer concentration. Comparing these results with the ones obtained for monomeric β-CD, it was observed that the concentration of CD that alters the DNA persistence length is considerably smaller when in the polymeric form. Also, the binding constant of the polymer-DNA interaction is three orders of magnitude higher than the one found for native (monomeric) β-CD. These results show that the polymerization of the β-CD strongly increases its binding affinity to the DNA molecule. This property can be wisely used to modulate the binding of cyclodextrins to the DNA double helix.

Abstract
The influence of β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin (β-CD-EP) polymers on the improvement of the solubility and antifungal activity of carbendazim has been investigated. Meanwhile, the potential of the chitosan and β-CD-EP composite film used as a plant healthcare material for carbendazim-controlled release to protect rape against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary has been evaluated. β-CD-EP-1 and 2 (β-CD content, 750 mg/g and 440 mg/g, respectively) were found to significantly improve the solubility of the guest molecule carbendazim (17.9 and 18.5 times, respectively) and the 1:1 stoichiometry of the host-guest was confirmed by the Job's plot. A slight synergism was observed for the β-CD-EP/carbendazim complex against S. sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary, indicating an enhancement to the bioavailability of carbendazim. The in vitro release studies revealed that β-CD-EP polymers could efficiently modulate carbendazim release behaviors, such as the release retard and rate. The in vivo efficacy experiments demonstrated that the β-CD-EP/carbendazim and chitosan composite film could significantly prolong the effective duration of carbendazim at a concentration of 100 μg/mL compared with spraying carbendazim at 500 μg/mL. Thereby, a highly useful and strategic concept in plant disease control by a plant healthcare material-the chitosan and polymeric β-CD-EP composite film-is provided, which could also serve as a concept for related plant diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metal-organic framework nanoparticles (nanoMOFs) are biodegradable highly porous materials with a remarkable ability to load therapeutic agents with a wide range of physico-chemical properties. Engineering the nanoMOFs surface may provide nanoparticles with higher stability, controlled release, and targeting abilities. Designing postsynthetic, non-covalent self-assembling shells for nanoMOFs is especially appealing due to their simplicity, versatility, absence of toxic byproducts and minimum impact on the original host-guest ability. METHODS In this study, several β-cyclodextrin-based monomers and polymers appended with mannose or rhodamine were randomly phosphorylated, and tested as self-assembling coating building blocks for iron trimesate MIL-100(Fe) nanoMOFs. The shell formation and stability were studied by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), spectrofluorometry and confocal imaging. The effect of the coating on tritium-labeled AZT-PT drug release was estimated by scintillation counting. RESULTS Shell formation was conveniently achieved by soaking the nanoparticles in self-assembling agent aqueous solutions. The grafted phosphate moieties enabled a firm anchorage of the coating to the nanoMOFs. Coating stability was directly related to the density of grafted phosphate groups, and did not alter nanoMOFs morphology or drug release kinetics. CONCLUSION An easy, fast and reproducible non-covalent functionalization of MIL-100(Fe) nanoMOFs surface based on the interaction between phosphate groups appended to β-cyclodextrin derivatives and iron(III) atoms is presented. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE This study proved that discrete and polymeric phosphate β-cyclodextrin derivatives can conform non-covalent shells on iron(III)-based nanoMOFs. The flexibility of the β-cyclodextrin to be decorated with different motifs open the way towards nanoMOFs modifications for drug delivery, catalysis, separation, imaging and sensing. Abstract
Electrospun mats containing cyclodextrin polymers (poly-αCD or poly-βCD) were developed to act as wound dressings showing tunable release rate of the antifungal agent fluconazole incorporated forming inclusion complexes. Poly-αCD and poly-βCD were prepared via cross-linking with epichlorohydrin (EPI) as water-soluble large molecular weight polymers. Then, polyCDs forming complexes with fluconazole were mixed with poly-(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) or poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) for electrospinning. Obtained bead-free fibers showed a random distribution, diameters in the 350-850nm range, and a variety of physical stability behaviors in aqueous environment. Mats were coated by hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) plasma polymerization to create a hydrophobic layer that prevented rapid drug diffusion. HMDSO coating was evidenced by the Si content of mat surface (EDX analysis) and by the increase in the water contact angle (up to 130°). In physiological-mimicking medium, non-treated mats showed burst release of fluconazole, whereas HMDSO-coated mats sustained the release and delayed disintegration of PVP-based mats. Antifungal tests evidenced that both coated and non-coated mats efficiently inhibited the growth of Candida albicans.

Abstract
Thermo-triggerable self-assembly was prepared by co-dissolving cinnamoyl Pluronic F127 (CinPlu) and cinnamoyl polymeric β cyclodextrin (CinPβCD) in an aqueous phase. On TEM photo, the CinPlu/CinPβCD self-assembly was 100-200nm in diameter. The specific loading of Nile red (NR) in the assembly was calculated to be 5.5% (wt NR/wt polymer), and the molar ratio of NR to βCD residue in the assembly was about 0.89:1. No significant release of NR from the assembly was observed at 10°C and 20°C. However, when the temperature was raised to 30°C, 40°C, 50°C, and 60°C, the cumulative release amount in 5min was 17%, 25%, 32%, and 52%, respectively. The specific loading of doxorubicin (DOX) in the assembly was about 6.8% (wt DOX/wt polymer) (corresponding to the molar ratio of DOX to βCD residue was about 0.41:1). The DOX release from the assembly was proportional to the temperature of release medium. NR and DOX were likely to be expelled out of the cavity of βCD residue by the interaction of the thermally hydrophobicized Pluronic F127 chain (molecular piston) and the cavity of βCD residue (cylinder). After 4h-incubation with KB cell, DOX loaded in CinPlu/CinPβCD self-assembly was found to be internalized into the cancer cell more than free DOX, observed on a confocal laser scanning microscope and a fluorescence activated cell sorter. CinPlu/CinPβCD self-assembly enhanced the in vitro anti-cancer activity of DOX against KB cell without increasing significantly the in vitro toxicity of DOX against Raw264.7 cell.

Abstract
In order to effectively control the bacterial pneumonia in pigs, doxycycline hydrochloride (DoxHcl) and florfenicol (FF) microparticle suspension together with inclusion complexes was prepared by using hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) as host molecules, polyvinylpyrroliddone (PVP) as polymer carriers and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) as suspending agents. In vitro antibacterial activity, properties, stability and pharmacokinetics of the suspension were studied. The results demonstrated that DoxHcl and FF had a synergistic or additive antibacterial activity against Streptococcus suis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Haemophilus parasuis. The size, polydispersity index and zeta potential of microparticles were 1.46 ± 0.06 μm, 0.30 ± 0.02 and 1.53 ± 0.04 mV, respectively. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of DoxHcl and FF was 45.28% ± 3.30% and 89.69% ± 2.71%, respectively. The re-dispersed time and sedimentation rate of the suspension were 1 min and 1. The suspension went through the 9-gage needle smoothly with withdrawal volume of 9.12 ± 0.87 mL/min. The suspension showed good stability when stored away from light, no irritation at the injection site and sustained release in PBS buffer. After intramuscular administration to pig, DoxHcl and FF could maintain over 0.15 μg/mL for 72 h. Compared to the control injection, the suspension increased the elimination half-life (T½ke) as well as mean residence time (MRT) of DoxHcl from 5.73 to 9.77 h and from 12.02 to 18.81 h, and those of FF from 12.02 to 26.19 h and from 12.02 to 28.16 h, respectively. The suspension increased the bioavailability of DoxHcl and FF by 1.74 and 1.13-fold, respectively. These results suggest that the compound suspension is a promising formulation for pig pneumonia therapy.

Abstract
The polymerization of partially methylated β-cyclodextrin (CRYSMEB) with epichlorohydrin was carried out in the presence of a known amount of toluene as imprinting agent. Three different preparations (D1, D2 and D3) of imprinted polymers were obtained and characterized by solid-state (13)C NMR spectroscopy under cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP-MAS) conditions. The polymers were prepared by using the same synthetic conditions but with different molar ratios of imprinting agent/monomer, leading to morphologically equivalent materials but with different absorption properties. The main purpose of the work was to find a suitable spectroscopic descriptor accounting for the different imprinting process in three homogeneous polymeric networks. The polymers were characterized by studying the kinetics of the cross-polarization process. This approach is based on variable contact time CP-MAS spectra, referred to as VCP-MAS. The analysis of the VCP-MAS spectra provided two relaxation parameters: T CH (the CP time constant) and T 1ρ (the proton spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame). The results and the analysis presented in the paper pointed out that T CH is sensitive to the imprinting process, showing variations related to the toluene/cyclodextrin molar ratio used for the preparation of the materials. Conversely, the observed values of T 1ρ did not show dramatic variations with the imprinting protocol, but rather confirmed that the three polymers are morphologically similar. Thus the combined use of T CH and T 1ρ can be helpful for the characterization and fine tuning of imprinted polymeric matrices.

Abstract
We report supramolecular cross-linking of polymer binders via dynamic host-guest interactions between hyperbranched β-cyclodextrin polymer and a dendritic gallic acid cross-linker incorporating six adamantane units for high-capacity silicon anodes. Calorimetric analysis in the solution phase indicates that the given host-guest complexation is a highly spontaneous and enthalpically driven process. These findings are further verified by carrying out gelation experiments in both aqueous and organic media. The dynamic cross-linking process enables intimate silicon-binder interaction, structural stability of electrode film, and controlled electrode-electrolyte interface, yielding enhanced cycling performance. Control experiments using both α, γ-CDp with different cavity sizes and a guest molecule incorporating a single adamantane unit verified that the enhanced cycle life originates from the host-guest interaction between β-cyclodextrin and adamantane. The impact of the dynamic cross-linking is maximized at an optimal stoichiometry between the two components. Importantly, the present investigation proves that the molecular-level tuning of the host-guest interactions can be translated directly to the cycling performance of silicon anodes.
