Unusual wetting dynamics of aqueous surfactant solutions on polymer surfaces

Biocompatible, lactide-based surfactants for the CO2-water interface: high-pressure contact angle goniometry, tensiometry, and emulsion formation

The unique properties of compressed CO2, including its low cost, nontoxicity, easily tunable solvent strength, and favorable transport properties, make it an environmentally attractive alternative to volatile organic solvents. Suitable surface-active species can be utilized to realize the full potential of clean, CO2-based technologies, by helping to overcome the low solubility typically associated with many solutes of interest in CO2. In this work we synthesize and investigate the interfacial activity of a series of nonionic amphiphiles with a biocompatible and biodegradable CO2-phile at both the CO2-water (C|W) and CO2-water-solid (C|W|S) interfaces. We developed a high-pressure pendant drop tensiometer and contact angle goniometer that allows us to measure both tension and contact angle in tandem. The tension of the C|W interface was measured in the presence of the lactide (LA)-based surface active agents with varying molecular weight and hydrophilic-to-CO2-philic ratios. Emulsion studies with an optimum balanced surfactant were performed. The contact angle of water droplets against a silane-modified (hydrophobic) substrate under CO2 atmosphere was also measured in presence of a selected LA-based amphiphile. The results demonstrate that the nonionic copolymers with the biodegradable and biocompatible LA-based group can significantly reduce the tension of the C|W interface. The LA-based surface active species are also capable of forming stable emulsions of water and CO2 and reducing the angle of the three-phase C|W|S contact line.

Surfactant Fouling of Nanofiltration Membranes: Measurements and Mechanisms

Fouling of nanofiltration membranes is studied during filtration of aqueous surfactant solutions under different conditions. To this purpose, four typical nanofiltration membranes (Desal51HL, NF270, NTR7450 and NFPES10) and three typical surfactants (nonionic neodol, anionic SDBS and cationic cetrimide) are selected. Fouling is studied as a function of the surfactant concentration, with and without addition of an electrolyte (NaCl), at different pH and when filtering a mixture of surfactants. Adsorption experiments and hydrophobicity measurements (to study the orientation of the surfactants on the membrane surface) are also performed under the different conditions. The least membrane fouling is found for the anionic surfactant SDBS, while for the cationic surfactant cetrimide very low relative fluxes are observed. Neodol shows an intermediate degree of fouling. Both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions (in the case of ionic surfactants) between the membrane surface and the surfactant explain the degree of adsorption and hence fouling, as membrane fouling is correlated with the amount of adsorbed surfactant. The difference between cetrimide and SDBS becomes especially visible when changing the pH: increasing the pH leads not only to an opposite orientation of the adsorbed surfactants, but also to an opposite trend in adsorbed amount and membrane fouling. This study permits selection of an optimal nanofiltration membrane to recycle wastewater containing surfactants in the carwash industry. The optimal choice would be a hydrophilic membrane with a low molecular weight cut-off and a small negative surface charge at neutral pH. Cationic surfactants in the wastewater should also be avoided as much as possible.

Solubilization of Polyelectrolytic Hairy-Rod Polyfluorene in Aqueous Solutions of Nonionic Surfactant

We report on the solubilization, phase behavior, and self-organized colloidal structure of a ternary water-polyfluorene-surfactant (amphiphile) system comprised of polyelectrolytic poly{1,4-phenylene[9,9-bis(4-phenoxybutylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} (PBS-PFP) in nonionic pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) at 20 degrees C. We show in particular how a high amount (milligrams per milliliter) of polyfluorene can be solubilized by aqueous C12E5 via aggregate formation. The PBS-PFP and C12E5 concentrations of 0.31 x 10(-4)-5 x 10(-4) M and 2.5 x 10(-4)-75 x 10(-4) M, respectively, were used. Under the studied conditions, the photoluminescence (PL), surface tension, static contact angle, and (pi-A) isotherm measurements imply that D2O-PBS-PFP(C12E5)x realizes three phase regimes with an increasing molar ratio of surfactant over monomer unit (x). First, for x < or = 0.5, the mixture is cloudy. In this regime polymer is only partially dissolved. Second, for 1 < or = x < or = 2, the solution is homogeneous. In this regime polymer is dissolved down to the colloidal level. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) patterns indicate rigid elongated (polymer-surfactant) aggregates with a diameter of 30 A and mean length of approximately 900 A. The ratio between contour length and persistence length is less than 3. Third, for x > or = 4, the solution is homogeneous and there is cooperative binding between polymer and surfactant. Surface tension, contact angle, and surface pressure remain essentially constant with increasing x. A PL spectrum characteristic of single separated polyfluorene molecules is observed. SANS curves show an interference maximum at q approximately 0.015 A(-1), indicating an ordered phase. This ordering is suggested to be due to the electrostatic repulsion between polymer molecules adsorbed on or incorporated into the C12E5 aggregates (micelles). On dilution the distance between micelles increases via 3-dimensional packing. In this regime the polymer is potentially dissolved down to the molecular level. We show further that the aggregates (x = 2) form a floating layer at the air-water interface and can be transferred onto hydrophilic substrates.

A novel method for detergent concentration determination

A fast and precise method for detergent concentration determination is presented. (Patent applications for the method described here have been submitted (EP05011904 and US60/702,261). A small droplet of the detergent solution is deposited on a piece of Parafilm M and side views are recorded by two orthogonally arranged TV cameras. The droplet contours are then approximated by ellipses to determine the contact angles. Comparison of the observed contact angle values to calibrated standard curves of known detergent concentrations gives the concentration of the detergent assessed. A range of commonly used detergents was studied to demonstrate the reproducibility and precision of this simple method. As a first application, the detergent binding capacity of the Escherichia coli galactose/proton symporter (GalP) was assessed. Aggregation of GalP was observed when <260 +/- 5 dodecyl-beta,D-maltoside molecules were bound to one GalP molecule. These measurements document the efficacy of the drop-shape based detergent concentration determination described.

Synergism in the spreading of hydrocarbon-chain surfactants on polyethylene film-anionic and cationic mixtures by a two-step procedure

A study has been made of the adsorption, interaction, and spreading of mixtures of anionic and cationic surfactants at the aqueous solution/polyethylene (PE) interface. When a drop of an aqueous solution of an anionic or cationic hydrocarbon-chain surfactant is placed on a highly hydrophobic PE film (contact angle of water > 90 degrees ), it spreads to an area very little larger than that of a drop of water of the same volume. If the anionic and cationic hydrocarbon-chain surfactant solutions are mixed prior to being applied to PE film, synergism is small, if any, and the reproducibility of the experimental results is poor. However, when the cationic and anionic aqueous solutions are applied on the PE film in a sequential manner, a remarkable synergism in spreading is observed and the results are very reproducible. The area spread by an aqueous solution of the anionic-cationic mixture may be more than 400 times that of aqueous solutions of the same volume and surfactant concentration of the individual surfactant components. Previous work in this laboratory on surfactant systems showing synergism in spreading on PE film, but only weak interaction at the aqueous solution/air interface, showed that the synergy was due to changes at the aqueous solution/PE interface and not to the changes at the aqueous solution/air or PE/air interface. Investigation of the adsorption behavior at the aqueous solution/solid interface of two of the anionic-cationic mixtures studied here indicates the reason for differences in spreading behavior observed with different anionic-cationic mixtures. The more similar the adsorption tendencies at the solid/aqueous solution interface of the anionic and cationic surfactants, and the closer their adsorption to an equimolar monolayer there, the stronger their interaction there and the greater their enhancement of the spreading. A mechanism is proposed for the synergy in spreading observed, based upon the difference between the surface tension in the precursor film at the spreading interface and that at the top of the spreading drop.
