Effects of repeated administration of the Beck Depression Inventory and other measures of negative mood states

Age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, and birth cohort differences on the children's depression inventory: a meta-analysis

A within-scale meta-analysis was performed on 310 samples of children (ages 8-16; N = 61,424) responding to the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Girls' depression scores stayed steady from ages 8 to 11 and then increased between ages 12 and 16. Boys' CDI scores were stable from ages 8 to 16 except for a high CDI score at age 12. Girls' scores were slightly lower than boys' during childhood, but girls scored higher beginning at age 13. There were no socioeconomic status effects and no differences between White and Black samples. However, Hispanic samples scored significantly higher on the CDI. Analyses for birth cohort showed a slight decrease in boys' CDI scores over time and no change for girls. Longitudinal studies demonstrated a marked testing effect.

Patterns of change in depressive symptoms during smoking cessation: who's at risk for relapse?

The authors examined patterns of change in depressive symptoms during smoking cessation treatment in 163 smokers with past major depressive disorder (MDD). Cluster analysis of Beck Depression Inventory (A. T. Beck, C. H. Ward, M. Mendelson, J. Mock, & J. Erbaugh, 1961) scores identified 5 patterns of change. Although 40% of participants belonged to clusters characterized by increasing depressive symptoms during quitting (rapid increasers, n = 31, and delayed increasers, n = 35), almost 47% were in clusters characterized by decreasing symptoms (delayed decreasers, n = 24, and rapid decreasers, n = 52). Both rapid and delayed increasers had especially poor smoking cessation outcomes. Results suggest that among smokers with an MDD history there is substantial heterogeneity in patterns of depressive symptoms during quitting and that patterns involving increased symptoms are associated with low abstinence rates.

Mood disturbance fails to resolve across 31 days of cigarette abstinence in women

Smoking abstinence responses were characterized in 96 female smokers. Participants completed subjective state measures twice per week for 5 weeks and were then randomly assigned to a group required to abstain for 31 days or a control group that continued to smoke. Financial incentives for biochemically verified abstinence resulted in an 81% completion rate. Abstinence-related increases in depression, tension, anger, irritability, and appetite showed little tendency to return to prequit levels and remained significantly elevated above smoke-group levels. In contrast to psychological components of anxiety, physical components decreased to smoke group levels by the 2nd week of abstinence. Trait depression and neuroticism predicted larger increased abstinence-associated negative affect. The Big Five personality dimensions predicted variance not associated with depressive traits.

Changes in waiting-list patients over time: data on some commonly-used measures. Beware!

When samples of psychiatric patients are assessed on 2 occasions on state and trait measures, without any formal intervention having yet taken place, a mean change in scores towards less psychopathology is often observed. This re-test effect, which is a potential threat to the validity of longitudinal studies, has not been given serious attention by researchers using repeated administrations. The present study addressed this issue by examining re-test effects in 2 independent clinical samples with the Symptom Check List-90-Revised and other widely-used state and trait measures. Time intervals between intake and re-take were 3 months and 11-350 days (M = 93 days, median = 81 days). Results indicated that the re-test effect occurred for most of the measures. Where significant testing effects were observed, 54-72% of the patients had time 2 scores that were lower than the average time I scores. The importance and practical and scientific implications of the findings are discussed. Eleven hypotheses concerning the nature of the re-test effect are offered, including mood-congruent associative processing, natural coping mechanisms, self-monitoring hypothesis and response-shift.
