Palladium-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions: A Powerful Tool for the Synthesis of Agrochemicals

Recent advances in nanoparticles towards sustainability and their application in organic transformations in aqueous media

Nanoparticles (NPs) play a crucial role in organic transformation and are becoming increasingly attractive in the field of catalysis as they show good catalytic activity in organic as well as aqueous media. Numerous NPs have been utilized for several organic transformations in aqueous media, which have led to dedicated efforts for the complete coverage of the application of metal, metal oxide, bimetallic and supported NPs in water-mediated organic transformations in the last decades. This review aims to provide current highlights on the application of various types of metal NPs for organic transformations in aqueous media. The remarkable benefits associated with the catalytic application of NPs in water allows for various transformations to be performed under very mild and green conditions. Lastly, the author's perspectives are briefly considered, including future developments and crucial challenges in the ever-growing field of nanocatalysis.

Formation of exceptional monomeric YPhos-PdCl2 complexes with high activities in coupling reactions

The use of well-defined palladium(ii) complexes as precatalysts for C-X cross-coupling reactions has improved the use of palladium catalysts in organic synthesis including large-scale processes. Whereas sophisticated Pd(ii) precursors have been developed in the past years to facilitate catalyst activation as well as the handling of systems with more advanced monophosphine ligands, we herein report that simple PdCl₂ complexes function as efficient precatalysts for ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos). These complexes are readily synthesized from PdCl₂ sources and form unprecedented monomeric PdCl₂ complexes without the need for any additional coligand. Instead, these structures are stabilized through a unique bonding motif, in which the YPhos ligands bind to the metal through the adjacent phosphine and ylidic carbon site. DFT calculations showed that these bonds are both dative interactions with the stronger interaction originating from the electron-rich phosphine donor. This bonding mode leads to a remarkable stability even towards air and moisture. Nonetheless, the complexes readily form monoligated LPd(0) complexes and thus the active palladium(0) species in coupling reactions. Accordingly, the YPhos-PdCl₂ complexes serve as highly efficient precatalysts for a series of C-C and C-X coupling reactions. Despite their simplicity they can compete with the efficiency of more complex and less stable precatalysts.

Synthesis of Novel Key Chromophoric Intermediates via C-C Coupling Reactions

The fundamentals of Pd-catalyzed Csp2−Csp2 Miyaura borylation, Suzuki cross-coupling, and Stille cross-coupling reactions for a variety of borylated precursors based on phenothiazine (PTZ), phenoxazine (POZ), carbazole (Cz), and quinoxaline (QX) units have been explored. Three palladium-based catalysts were chosen for this study: Pd(PPh3)4, Pd(PPh3)2Cl2, and Pd(dppf)Cl2, applying different reaction conditions. Around 16 desired chromophores were successfully designed and synthesized using C-C cross-coupling reactions in moderate to excellent yields, including PTZ, POZ, and Cz units coupled with QX, indolinium iodide, thienyl, phenyl, or triphenylamine moieties. Additionally, PTZ, POZ, and Cz have been employed in synthesizing various pinacol boronate ester derivatives in good to moderate yields. Interestingly, Pd(dppf)Cl2 was found to be the best catalyst for borylation, and C-C cross-coupling reactions occurred in as little as 30 min, with an excellent yield exceeding 98%. Pd(PPh3)4 and Pd(PPh3)2Cl2 catalyzed the reaction to obtain the desired products in moderate to good yields after a long time (20–24 h). On the other hand, the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling between N-(2-methyl)hexyl carbazole pinacol boronate ester derivative 10c and three halogenated quinoxaline derivatives—4-(3-(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)quinoxalin-2-yl)benzaldehyde (27), 4-(5-(3-(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)quinoxalin-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)benzaldehyde (30), and 4-(3-chloroquinoxalin-2-yl)benzaldehyde (25) catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)4—afforded three carbazole-quinoxaline chromophores (28, 30, and 31, respectively) in 2–3 h, with good to excellent yields reaching 86%. The electron-deficient QX couplers proved to be coupled efficiently using the Stille coupling reaction, which involves the coupling between electron-rich orgaostannane and electron-deficient halide. The synthesized precursors and desired chromophores were characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and HRMS.

Bismuth-Mediated α-Arylation of Acidic Diketones with ortho-Substituted Boronic Acids

The α-arylation of cyclic and fluoroalkyl 1,3-diketones is made challenging by the highly stabilized nature of the corresponding enolates, and is especially difficult for sterically demanding aryl partners. As a general solution to this problem, we report the Bi-mediated oxidative coupling of acidic diones and ortho-substituted arylboronic acids. Starting from a bench-stable bismacycle precursor, a sequence of B-to-Bi transmetallation, oxidation and C-C bond formation furnishes the arylated diones. Development of methodology that tolerates both sensitive functionality and steric demand is supported by interrogation of key reactive intermediates. Application of our strategy to cyclic diones enables the concise synthesis of important agrochemical intermediates which were previously prepared using toxic Pb reagents. This methodology also enables the first ever arylation of fluoroalkyl diones which, upon condensation with hydrazine, provides direct access to valuable fluoroalkyl pyrazoles.

Chemistry of azo-imine based palladium complexes: a brief review

This paper provides a general overview of palladium complexes incorporating numerous multidentate azo-imine ligands, their structural diversity, synthetic protocol, interesting properties such as redox properties, biological activity and their further application on C – N coupling reactions, C – C cross-coupling reactions (e.g., Suzuki and Heck) and catalytic activity on different organic transformations. A detailed literature survey revealed that no brief review has yet been published on the azo-azomethine-based palladium complex. Therefore, the present review incorporates the research undertaken on the synthetic strategies and coordinating behaviour of various azo-imine ligands with palladium metal centre and a few important properties of metal complexes.

Task-Specific Janus Materials in Heterogeneous Catalysis

Janus materials are anisotropic nano- and microarchitectures with two different faces consisting of distinguishable or opposite physicochemical properties. In parallel with the discovery of new methods for the fabrication of these materials, decisive progress has been made in their application, for example, in biological science, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, and, more recently, in battery technology. This Minireview systematically covers recent and significant achievements in the application of task-specific Janus nanomaterials as heterogeneous catalysts in various types of chemical reactions, including reduction, oxidative desulfurization and dye degradation, asymmetric catalysis, biomass transformation, cascade reactions, oxidation, transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, electro- and photocatalytic reactions, as well as gas-phase reactions. Finally, an outlook on possible future applications is given.

Estudio teórico de la oxidación de CO con O2 usando catalizadores de Au-Pd y Au-Pt

En el presente estudio se realizaron cálculos con base en la Teoría del Funcional de la Densidad Electrónica (DFT) con la aproximación B3PW91/LANL2DZ para optimizar los sistemas monometálicos y bimetálicos Au9, Au8Pd, Au8Pt, AuPd8, AuPt8, Pd9 y Pt9. Los materiales fueron teóricamente evaluados como catalizadores para la oxidación de monóxido de carbono (CO) y se determinó el sistema más favorable para la adsorción de esta molécula. La sustitución de átomos de Pt y Pd por átomos de Au en los nonámeros generó un cambio en la estructura tridimensional del sistema. El análisis de reactividad global mostró que el clúster más reactivo es 𝑃𝑡9, seguido por 𝐴𝑢𝑃𝑡8. Los índices de Fukui identificaron los sitios más susceptibles para un ataque nucleofílico de ambos clústeres. La adsorción de CO generó una cascada de oxidación que liberó ~4,5 eV, indicando que la reacción es altamente exotérmica y exergónica. Los clústeres 𝐴𝑢𝑃𝑡8 y 𝑃𝑡9 mostraron los valores más bajos de energía de activación de la etapa determinante del mecanismo. En general, la sustitución de un átomo de platino (o paladio) por un átomo de oro no afecta la reactividad de los nonámeros y, por tanto, se infiere que el clúster 𝐴𝑢𝑃𝑡8 podría ser un catalizador promisorio en la oxidación de CO.

MOF/POM hybrids as catalysts for organic transformations

Insertion of molecular metal oxides, e.g. polyoxometalates (POMs), into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) opens up new research opportunities in various fields, particularly in catalysis. POM/MOF composites have strong acidity, oxygen-rich surface, and redox capacity due to typical characteristics of POMs and the large surface area, highly organized structures, tunable pore size, and shape are due to MOFs. Such hybrid materials have gained a lot of attention due to astonishing structural features, and hence have potential applications in organic catalysis, sorption and separation, proton conduction, magnetism, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, electrochemistry, medicine, bio-fuel, and so on. The exceptional chemical and physical characteristics of POMOFs make them useful as catalysts in simple organic transformations with high capacity and selectivity. Here, the thorough catalytic study starts with a brief introduction related to POMs and MOFs, and is followed by the synthetic strategies and applications of these materials in several catalytic organic transformations. Furthermore, catalytic conversions like oxidation, condensation, esterification, and some other types of catalytic reactions including photocatalytic reactions are discussed in length with their plausible catalytic mechanisms. The disadvantages of the POMOFs and difficulties faced in the field have also been explored briefly from our perspectives.

General Method for the Amination of Aryl Halides with Primary and Secondary Alkyl Amines via Nickel Photocatalysis

The Buchwald-Hartwig C-N coupling reaction has been ranked as one of the 20 most frequently used reactions in medicinal chemistry. Owing to its much lower cost and higher reactivity toward less reactive aryl chlorides than palladium, the C-N coupling reaction catalyzed by Ni-based catalysts has received a great deal of attention. However, there appear to be no universal, practical Ni catalytic systems so far that could enable the coupling of electron-rich and electron-poor aryl halides with both primary and secondary alkyl amines. In this study, it is reported that a Ni(II)-bipyridine complex catalyzes efficient C-N coupling of aryl chlorides and bromides with various primary and secondary alkyl amines under direct excitation with light. Intramolecular C-N coupling is also demonstrated. The feasibility and applicability of the protocol in organic synthesis is attested by more than 200 examples.

Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Couplings: On the Importance of the Catalyst Quantity Descriptors, mol % and ppm

This Review examines parts per million (ppm) palladium concentrations in catalytic cross-coupling reactions and their relationship with mole percentage (mol %). Most studies in catalytic cross-coupling chemistry have historically focused on the concentration ratio between (pre)catalyst and the limiting reagent (substrate), expressed as mol %. Several recent papers have outlined the use of “ppm level” palladium as an alternative means of describing catalytic cross-coupling reaction systems. This led us to delve deeper into the literature to assess whether “ppm level” palladium is a practically useful descriptor of catalyst quantities in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Indeed, we conjectured that many reactions could, unknowingly, have employed low “ppm levels” of palladium (pre)catalyst, and generally, what would the spread of ppm palladium look like across a selection of studies reported across the vast array of the cross-coupling chemistry literature. In a few selected examples, we have examined other metal catalyst systems for comparison with palladium.

Real-Time Fluorescence Imaging of the Abscisic Acid Receptor Allows Nondestructive Visualization of Plant Stress

Environmental stress greatly decreases crop yield. The application of noninvasive techniques is one of the most practical and feasible ways of monitoring the health condition of plants under stress. However, it remains largely unsolved. A chemical fluorescent probe can be applied as a typical nondestructive method, but it has not been applied in living plants for stress detection to date. The abscisic acid (ABA) receptor plays a central role in conferring tolerance to environmental stresses and is an excellent target for developing fluorescent probes. Herein, we developed a fluorescence molecular imaging technology to monitor live plant stress by visualizing the protein expression level of the ABA receptor PYR1. A computer-aided designed indicator dye, flubactin, exhibited an 8-fold enhancement in fluorescence intensity upon interaction with PYR1. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that flubactin is suitable to be used to detect salt stress in plants in real time. Moreover, the low toxicity of flubactin promotes its application in the future. Our work opens a new era for the nondestructive visualization of plant stress in vivo.

Organosulphur and organoselenium compounds as emerging building blocks for catalytic systems for O-arylation of phenols, a C-O coupling reaction

Diaryl ethers form an important class of organic compounds. The classic copper-mediated Ullmann diaryl ether synthesis has been known for many years and involves the coupling of phenols with aryl halides. However, the use of high reaction temperature, high catalyst loading and expensive ligands has created a need for the development of alternative catalytic systems. In the recent past, organosulphur and organoselenium compounds have been used as building blocks for developing homogeneous, heterogeneous and nanocatalysts for this C-O coupling reaction. Homogeneous catalytic systems include preformed complexes of metals with organosulphur and organoselenium ligands. The performance of such complexes is influenced dramatically by the nature of the chalcogen (S or Se) donor site of the ligand. Nanocatalytic systems (including Pd₁₇Se₁₅, Pd₁₆S₇ and Cu_1.8S) have been designed using a single-source precursor route. Heterogeneous catalytic systems contain either metal (Cu or Pd) or metal chalcogenides (Pd₁₇Se₁₅ or Cu_1.8S) as catalytically active species. This article aims to cover the simple and straightforward methodologies and approaches that are adopted for developing catalytically relevant organosulfur and organoselenium ligands, their homogeneous metal complexes, heterogeneous and nanocatalysts. The effects of chalcogen (S or Se) donor, halogen (Cl/Br/I) of aryl halide, nature (electron withdrawing or electron donating) of substituents present on the aromatic ring of aryl halides or substituted phenols and position (ortho or para) of substitution on the results of catalytic reactions have been critically analyzed and summarized. The effect of composition (Pd₁₇Se₁₅ or Pd₁₆S₇) on the performance of nanocatalytic systems is also highlighted. Substrate scope has also been discussed in all three types of catalysis. The superiority of heterogeneous catalytic systems (e.g., Pd₁₇Se₁₅ immobilised on graphene oxide) indicates the bright future possibilities for the development of efficient catalytic systems using similar or tailored ligands for this reaction.

Synthesis of (Deoxy)difluoromethylated Phosphines by Reaction of R2P(O)H with TMSCF3 and Their Application in Cu(I) Clusters in Sonogashira Coupling

R₂PCF₂H ligands and their R₂P(O)CF₂H precursors were synthesized from R₂P(O)H with TMSCF₃ by simply modulating the H₂O concentration via deoxydifluoromethylation and difluoromethylation. The air sensitive R₂PCF₂H phosphines can be stabilized in Cu(I) clusters as ligands. Within these Cu(I) clusters, the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction can proceed fast and efficiently using terminal alkynes and aryl iodides within 15 min at room temperature under air to give a variety of diaryl(alkyl)acetylenes in good yields (49 examples, yields of ≤99%). Six of the internal alkynes present in drug precursors can be obtained using this protocol in good yields. The mechanism is proposed on the basis of control experiments.

Regio- and Stereoselective Installation of Bromide onto Vinyl Sulfonyl Fluorides: Construction of a Class of Versatile Sulfur Fluoride Exchange Hubs

A convenient protocol for the exclusively regio- and stereoselective installation of a bromine atom on the 2-arylvinylsulfonyl fluorides using lithium bromide (LiBr) as the bromine source was described, providing (Z)-1-bromo-2-arylethene-1-sulfonyl fluorides (Z-BASF) with versatile reactive handles (bromide, vinyl, and sulfonyl fluoride) in ≤88% yield. Meanwhile, Z-BASF molecules displayed various reactivities in a series of chemical transformations.

Asymmetric Auto-Tandem Palladium Catalysis for 2,4-Dienyl Carbonates: Ligand-Controlled Divergent Synthesis

Developing new asymmetric auto-tandem catalysis processes, especially in a divergent manner, is highly attractive but extremely challenging. Presented herein is a palladium-catalyzed auto-tandem reaction between 2,4-dienyl carbonates and o-TsNH arylimines or trifluoroacetophenones that proceeds through a consecutive N-allylation, vinylogous addition, π-σ-π isomerization, and another N-allylation sequence. Importantly, switchable diastereodivergent synthesis could be achieved by tuning the chiral bisphosphine ligands, which led to the construction of a broad spectrum of fused tetrahydroquinoline architectures with moderate to excellent enantioselectivity. Ligand control even enabled effective access to regiodivergent azetidine or chemodivergent β-H elimination with fair enantioselectivity, further showing the versatility of the current auto-tandem catalysis.

Inorganometallics (Transition Metal-Metalloid Complexes) and Catalysis

While the formation and breaking of transition metal (TM)-carbon bonds plays a pivotal role in the catalysis of organic compounds, the reactivity of inorganometallic species, that is, those involving the transition metal (TM)-metalloid (E) bond, is of key importance in most conversions of metalloid derivatives catalyzed by TM complexes. This Review presents the background of inorganometallic catalysis and its development over the last 15 years. The results of mechanistic studies presented in the Review are related to the occurrence of TM-E and TM-H compounds as reactive intermediates in the catalytic transformations of selected metalloids (E = B, Si, Ge, Sn, As, Sb, or Te). The Review illustrates the significance of inorganometallics in catalysis of the following processes: addition of metalloid-hydrogen and metalloid-metalloid bonds to unsaturated compounds; activation and functionalization of C-H bonds and C-X bonds with hydrometalloids and bismetalloids; activation and functionalization of C-H bonds with vinylmetalloids, metalloid halides, and sulfonates; and dehydrocoupling of hydrometalloids. This first Review on inorganometallic catalysis sums up the developments in the catalytic methods for the synthesis of organometalloid compounds and their applications in advanced organic synthesis as a part of tandem reactions.

Pd-Catalyzed desulfitative arylation of olefins by N-methoxysulfonamide

A novel Pd-catalyzed protocol for the desulfitative Heck-type reaction of N-methoxy aryl sulfonamides with alkenes was reported. The cross-coupling reaction was performed successfully with a variety of olefins to obtain aryl alkenes. Different substituents on the aromatic ring of N-methoxysulfonamides were also found to be compatible with the reaction conditions. Expectedly, the reaction proceeds through CuCl₂-promoted generation of the nitrogen radical and subsequent desulfonylation under thermal conditions to afford the aryl radical for the Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction. N-Methoxysulfonamide was further exploited for the synthesis of symmetrical biaryls in the presence of CuCl₂.

Hydroelementation of diynes

This review highlights the hydroelementation reactions of conjugated and separated diynes, which depending on the process conditions, catalytic system, as well as the type of reagents, leads to the formation of various products: enynes, dienes, allenes, polymers, or cyclic compounds. The presence of two triple bonds in the diyne structure makes these compounds important reagents but selective product formation is often difficult owing to problems associated with maintaining appropriate reaction regio- and stereoselectivity. Herein we review this topic to gain knowledge on the reactivity of diynes and to systematise the range of information relating to their use in hydroelementation reactions. The review is divided according to the addition of the E-H (E = Mg, B, Al, Si, Ge, Sn, N, P, O, S, Se, Te) bond to the triple bond(s) in the diyne, as well as to the type of the reagent used, and the product formed. Not only are the hydroelementation reactions comprehensively discussed, but the synthetic potential of the obtained products is also presented. The majority of published research is included within this review, illustrating the potential as well as limitations of these processes, with the intent to showcase the power of these transformations and the obtained products in synthesis and materials chemistry.

Electro-oxidation induced O–S cross-coupling of quinoxalinones with sodium sulfinates for synthesizing 2-sulfonyloxylated quinoxalines

C–N coupling reactions with arenes through C–H activation: the state-of-the-art versus the principles of green chemistry

Herein, we discuss the state-of-the-art in arene C–N coupling through C–H activation and to what extent it complies with the principles of green chemistry, with a focus on heterogeneously catalysed systems.

Hydrogen Bond Patterns of Dipyridone and Bis(Hydroxypyridinium) Cations

Dipyridonyl-substituted derivatives 2-4 of benzene, pyridine, and pyrazine, respectively, were synthesized to examine the ability of 2-pyridone and its protonated species to direct the self-assembly by hydrogen bonding. Structural analysis by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) of 2 and 4 in trifluoroacetic acid demonstrated that salts are formed as a result of the transfer of protons from the acid to the base (organic species) to generate a bis(hydroxypyridinium) dication. However, if no proton transfer takes place like in the case of crystals of 3 grown from DMSO/H₂O, the self-assembly is mainly directed by the typical R ₂ ²(8) hydrogen bond motif of 2-pyridone. These results indicate that the process of converting a neutral 2-pyridonyl group into a hydroxypyridinium cation makes structure prediction difficult. Consequently, examination of proton transfer and assembly of dipyridone and its protonated species are of interest. In combination with SCXRD, Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA) was also used to have a better understanding on the nature of intermolecular interactions within crystal structures of 2-4. The large number of F···H/H···F, H···O/O···H, H···H, and H···C/C···H contacts revealed by HSA indicates that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions mainly contribute to crystal packing.

Carboxylate-Assisted Palladium-Catalyzed Regio- and Stereoselective Mizoroki-Heck Arylation of β-Cyclohexadienyl Acrylates and Styrenes

A carboxylate-assisted palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck arylation of electron-deficient internal alkenes is described herein. This protocol utilized a free carboxylic acid as the directing group for regio- and stereoselective Mizoroki-Heck arylation of β-cyclohexadienyl acrylates and styrenes with various aryl iodides. The synthetic application has been exhibited by decarboxylative aromatization and iodolactonization/hydrolysis of the resulting polyenes providing trisubstituted alkenes and structurally diverse hydroxyl lactones. Additionally, mechanistic studies have been performed to elucidate the reaction outcome of regio- and stereoselectivity.

Metal-Free Synthesis of Heteroaryl Amines or Their Hydrochlorides via an External-Base-Free and Solvent-Free C-N Coupling Protocol

Herein, a metal-free and solvent-free protocol was developed for the C-N coupling of heteroaryl halides and amines, which afforded numerous heteroaryl amines or their hydrochlorides without any external base. Further investigations elucidated that the basicity of amines and specific interactions derived from the X-ray crystallography analysis of 3j'·HCl played pivotal roles in the reactions. Moreover, this protocol was scalable to gram scales and applicable to drug molecules, which demonstrated its practical value for further applications.
