Abstract
The accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) is often judged by predicted dissociation energies, but one should also consider charge densities as illustrated here for dissociation of heteronuclear diatomic molecules, including ionic bonds for which local density functionals yield erroneous results. Some hybrid density functionals with 100% exact exchange in Kohn-Sham DFT and the local functionals in multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory give relatively acurate dissociation energies for NaCl, and they correctly yield uncharged dissociated atoms.

Abstract
Reliable heats of formation are reported for numerous fluorinated and chlorinated methane and ethane derivatives by means of an accurate thermochemical protocol, which involves explicitly correlated coupled-cluster calculations augmented with anharmonic, scalar relativistic, and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections. The theoretical results, along with additional experimental data, are further enhanced with the help of the thermochemical network approach. For 28 species, out of 50, this study presents the best estimates, and discrepancies with previous reports are also highlighted. Furthermore, the effects of the less accurate theoretical data on the results yielded by thermochemical networks are discussed.

Abstract
Criegee intermediates (i.e., carbonyl oxides with two radical sites) are known to be important atmospheric reagents; however, our knowledge of their reaction kinetics is still limited. Although experimental methods have been developed to directly measure the reaction rate constants of stabilized Criegee intermediates, the experimental results cover limited temperature ranges and do not completely agree well with one another. Here we investigate the unimolecular reaction of acetone oxide [(CH3)2COO] and its bimolecular reaction with H2O to obtain rate constants with quantitative accuracy comparable to experimental accuracy. We do this by using CCSDT(Q)/CBS//CCSD(T)-F12a/DZ-F12 benchmark results to select and validate exchange-correlation functionals, which are then used for direct dynamics calculations by variational transition state theory with small-curvature tunneling and torsional and high-frequency anharmonicity. We find that tunneling is very significant in the unimolecular reaction of (CH3)2COO and its bimolecular reaction with H2O. We show that the atmospheric lifetimes of (CH3)2COO depend on temperature and that the unimolecular reaction of (CH3)2COO is the dominant decay mode above 240 K, while the (CH3)2COO + SO2 reaction can compete with the corresponding unimolecular reaction below 240 K when the SO2 concentration is 9 × 1010 molecules per cubic centimeter. We also find that experimental results may not be sufficiently accurate for the unimolecular reaction of (CH3)2COO above 310 K. Not only does the present investigation provide insights into the decay of (CH3)2COO in the atmosphere, but it also provides an illustration of how to use theoretical methods to predict quantitative rate constants of medium-sized Criegee intermediates.

Abstract
Reactions of hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO2) are important for governing the reactivity of combustion systems. We performed post-CCSD(T) ab initio calculations at the W3X-L//CCSD = FC/cc-pVTZ level to explore the triplet ground-state and singlet excited-state potential energy surfaces of the OH + HO2 → H2O + O2(3Σg-)/O2(1Δg) reactions. Using microcanonical and multistructural canonical transition state theories, we calculated the rate constant for the triplet and singlet channels over the temperature range 200-2500 K, represented by k(T) = 3.08 × 1012T0.07 exp(1151/RT) + 8.00 × 1012T0.32 exp(-6896/RT) and k(T) = 2.14 × 106T1.65 exp(-2180/RT) in cm3 mol-1 s-1, respectively. The branching ratios show that the yield of singlet excited oxygen is small (<0.5% below 1000 K). To ascertain the importance of singlet oxygen channel, our new kinetic information was implemented into the kinetic model for hydrogen combustion recently updated by Konnov (Combust. Flame, 2015, 162, 3755-3772). The updated kinetic model was used to perform H2O2 thermal decomposition simulations for comparison against shock tube experiments performed by Hong et al. (Proc. Combust. Inst., 2013, 34, 565-571), and to estimate flame speeds and ignition delay times in H2 mixtures. The simulation predicted a larger amount of O2(1Δg) in H2O2 decomposition than that predicted by Konnov's original model. These differences in the O2(1Δg) yield are due to the use of a higher ab initio level and a more sophisticated methodology to compute the rate constant than those used in previous studies, thereby predicting a significantly larger rate constant. No effect was observed on the rate of the H2O2 decomposition and on the flame speeds and ignition delay times of different H2-oxidizer mixtures. However, if the oxidizer is seeded with O3, small differences appear in the flame speed. Given that O2(1Δg) is much more reactive than O2(3Σg-), we do not preclude an effect of the singlet channel of the titled reaction in other combustion systems, especially in systems where excited oxygen plays an important role.

Abstract
Abstract
We have developed the WnX series of quantum chemistry composite protocols for the computation of highly-accurate thermochemical quantities with advanced efficiency and applicability. The W1X-type methods have a general accuracy of ~3–4 kJ mol−1 and they can currently be applied to systems with ~20–30 atoms. Higher-level methods include W2X, W3X and W3X-L, with the most accurate of these being W3X-L. It can be applied to molecules with ~10–20 atoms and is generally accurate to ~1.5 kJ mol−1. The WnX procedures have opened up new possibilities for computational chemists in pursue of accurate thermochemical values in a highly-productive manner.

Abstract
We have devised the composite procedures WG and WGh to unify the W1X and the (computationally more economical) G4(MP2)-6X protocols. The WG procedure employs a combination of MP2, MP2-F12, CCSD-F12b, and CCSD(T) to approximate the all-electron scalar-relativistic CCSD(T)/CBS energy. In addition, it incorporates features such as the scaling of the energy components and an empirical "higher-level-correction" term. The WGh protocol represents a somewhat more economical variant of WG with partial removal of diffuse functions. Our benchmark shows that, in general, both WG and WGh have similar performance to that for W1X-2, with WGh (predictably) performing somewhat less well for electron affinities. In terms of computational efficiency, WG is approximately an order of magnitude less costly than W1X-2, while WGh gives not only a further slight savings in computer time but also a notably reduced disk requirement.

Abstract
Criegee intermediates are produced in the ozonolysis of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the troposphere, and understanding their fate is a prerequisite to modeling climate-controlling atmospheric aerosol formation. Although some experimental and theoretical rate data are available, they are incomplete and partially inconsistent, and they do not cover the tropospheric temperature range. Here, we report quantum chemical rate constants for the reactions of stabilized formaldehyde oxide (CH2OO) and acetaldehyde oxide (syn-CH3CHOO and anti-CH3CHOO) with H2O and for their unimolecular reactions. Our results are obtained by combining post-CCSD(T) electronic structure benchmarks, validated density functional theory potential energy surfaces, and multipath variational transition state theory with multidimensional tunneling, coupled-torsions anharmonicity, and high-frequency anharmonicity. We consider two different types of reaction mechanisms for the bimolecular reactions, namely, (i) addition-coupled hydrogen transfer and (ii) double hydrogen atom transfer (DHAT). First, we show that the MN15-L exchange-correlation functional has kJ/mol accuracy for the CH2OO + H2O and syn-CH3CHOO + H2O reactions. Then we show that, due to tunneling, the DHAT mechanism is especially important in the syn-CH3CHOO + H2O reaction. We show that the dominant pathways for reactions of Criegee intermediates depend on altitude. The results we obtain eliminate the discrepancy between experiment and theory under those conditions where experimental results are available, and we make predictions for the full range of temperatures and pressures encountered in the troposphere and stratosphere. The present results are an important cog in clarifying the atmospheric fate and oxidation processes of Criegee intermediates, and they also show how theoretical methods can provide reliable rate data for complex atmospheric processes.

Abstract
To simulate emissions of nitrogen-containing compounds in practical combustion environments, it is necessary to have accurate values for their thermochemical parameters, as well as accurate kinetic values to describe the rates of their formation and decomposition. Significant disparity is observed in the literature for the former, and we therefore present herein high-accuracy ab initio gas-phase thermochemistry for 60 nitrogenous compounds, many of which are important in the formation and consumption chemistry of NOx species. Several quantum-chemical composite methods (CBS-APNO, G3, and G4) were utilized to derive enthalpies of formation via the atomization method. Entropies and heat capacities were calculated from traditional statistical thermodynamics, with oscillators treated as anharmonic based on ro-vibrational property analyses carried out at the B3LYP/cc-pVTZ level of theory. The use of quantum chemical methods, along with the treatments of anharmonicities and hindered rotors, ensures accurate enthalpy of formation, entropy, and heat capacity values across the temperature range 298.15-3000 K. The implications of these results for atmospheric and combustion modeling are discussed.

Abstract
Predicting the singlet-triplet splittings of divalent radicals is a challenging task for electronic structure theory. In the present work, we investigate the performance of multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) for computing the singlet-triplet splitting for small main-group divalent radicals for which accurate experimental data are available. In order to define theoretical model chemistries that can be assessed consistently, we define three correlated participating orbitals (CPO) schemes (nominal, moderate, and extended, abbreviated as nom, mod, and ext) to define the constitution of complete active spaces, and we test them systematically. Broken-symmetry Kohn-Sham DFT calculations have also been carried out for comparison. We found that the extended CPO-PDFT scheme with translated on-top pair-density functionals have smaller mean unsigned errors than weighted-average broken-symmetry Kohn-Sham DFT with the corresponding exchange-correlation functional. The accuracy of the translated Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (tPBE) on-top pair-density functionals with ext-CPO active space is even better than some of the more accurately parametrized exchange-correlation density functionals that we tested; this is very encouraging for MC-PDFT theory.

Abstract
Accurate thermochemical data for compounds containing C/H/N/O are required to underpin kinetics simulation and modeling of the reactions of these species in different environments. There is a dearth of experimental data so computational quantum chemistry has stepped in to fill this breach and to verify whether particular experiments are in need of revision. A number of composite model chemistries (CBS-QB3, CBS-APNO, G3, and G4) are used to compute theoretical atomization energies and hence enthalpies of formation at 0 and 298.15 K, and these are benchmarked against the best available compendium of values, the Active Thermochemical Tables or ATcT. In general the agreement is very good for some 28 species with the only discrepancy being for hydrazine. It is shown that, although individually the methods do not perform that well, collectively the mean unsigned error is <1.7 kJ mol(-1); hence, this approach provides a useful tool to screen published values and validate new experimental results. Using multiple model chemistries does have some drawbacks but can produce good results even for challenging molecules like HOON and CN2O2. The results for these smaller validated molecules are then used as anchors for determining the formation enthalpies of larger species such as methylated hydrazines and diazenes, five- and six-membered heterocyclics via carefully chosen isodesmic working reactions with the aim of resolving some discrepancies in the literature and establishing a properly validated database. This expanded database could be useful in testing the performance of computationally less-demanding density function methods with newer functionals that have the capacity to treat much larger systems than those tested here.
