Abstract
The exceptional thermal and chemical stability of the UiO-66, -67 and -68 classes of isostructural MOFs [J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2008, 130, 13850] makes them ideal materials for functionalization purposes aimed at introducing active centres for potential application in heterogeneous catalysis. We previously demonstrated that a small fraction (up to 10%) of the linkers in the UiO-67 MOF can be replaced by bipyridine-dicarboxylate (bpydc) moieties exhibiting metal-chelating ability and enabling the grafting of Pt(ii) and Pt(iv) ions in the MOF framework [Chem. Mater., 2015, 27, 1042] upon interaction with PtCl2 or PtCl4 precursors. Herein we extend this functionalization approach in two directions. First, we show that by controlling the activation of the UiO-67-Pt we can move from a material hosting isolated Pt(ii) sites anchored to the MOF framework with Pt(ii) exhibiting two coordination vacancies (potentially interesting for C-H bond activation) to the formation of very small Pt nanoparticles hosted inside the MOF cavities (potentially interesting for hydrogenation reactions). The second direction consists of the extension of the approach to the insertion of Cu(ii), obtained via interaction with CuCl2, and exhibiting interesting redox properties. All materials have been characterized by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Pt L3- and Cu K-edges.

Abstract
Ag29 nanoclusters capped with lipoic acid (LA) can be doped with Au. The doped clusters show enhanced stability and increased luminescence efficiency. We attribute the higher quantum yield to an increase in the rate of radiative decay. With mass spectrometry, the Au-doped clusters were found to consist predominantly of Au1Ag28(LA)123-. The clusters were characterized using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Au L3-edge. Both the extended absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and the near edge structure (XANES) in combination with electronic structure calculations confirm that the Au dopant is preferentially located in the center of the cluster. A useful XANES spectrum can be recorded for lower concentrations, or in shorter time, than the more commonly used EXAFS. This makes XANES a valuable tool for structural characterization.

Abstract
This perspective article aims to underline how cutting-edge synchrotron radiation spectroscopies such as extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), high resolution fluorescence detected (HRFD) XANES, X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) have played a key role in the structural and electronic characterization of Ti-based catalysts and photocatalysts, representing an important additional value to the outcomes of conventional laboratory spectroscopies (UV-Vis, IR, Raman, EPR, NMR etc.). Selected examples are taken from the authors research activity in the last two decades, covering both band-gap and shape engineered TiO2 materials and microporous titanosilicates (ETS-10, TS-1 and Ti-AlPO-5). The relevance of the state of the art simulation techniques as a support for experiments interpretation is underlined for all the reported examples.

Abstract
The current understanding of the synthesis mechanisms of noble metal clusters is limited, in particular for Ag clusters. Here, we present a detailed investigation into the synthesis process of atomically monodisperse Ag29 clusters, prepared via reduction of AgNO3 in the presence of dithiolate ligands. Using optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray spectroscopy, it was determined that the synthesis involves a rapid nucleation and growth to species with up to a few hundred Ag atoms. From these larger species, Ag29 clusters are formed and their concentration increases steadily over time. Oxygen plays an important role in the etching of large particles to Ag29. No other stable Ag cluster species are observed at any point during the synthesis.

Abstract
A comprehensive study of the valence state and the local coordination character of Mn1-xYbxS (x = 0; 0.01; 0.05) solid solutions has been performed using X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with finite difference method calculations. The good agreement between experimental and calculated data indicates that cationic substitution does not lead to significant changes in the manganese local coordination character. The ytterbium atoms are found to be in the trivalent state, while the manganese and sulfur atoms are in the divalent state.

Abstract
The paper contains an overview of modern spectroscopic methods for studying the local atomic structure of superparamagnetic nanoparticles based on iron oxide (SPIONs), which are an important class of materials promising for theranostics in oncology. Practically important properties of small and ultra small nanoparticles are determined primarily by their shape, size, and features of the local atomic, electronic, and magnetic structures, for the study of which the standard characterization methods developed for macroscopic materials are not optimal. The paper analyzes results of the studies of SPIONs local atomic structure carried out by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at synchrotron radiation sources and Mössbauer spectroscopy during the last decade.

Abstract
Iron occurs in clay minerals in both ferric and ferrous forms. Depending on its oxidation state and the environmental conditions, it can participate in redox reactions and influence the sorption processes at surfaces of clay minerals. Knowing the oxidation state and the preferential structural position of Fe2+ and Fe3+ is essential for the detailed understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of such processes. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) calculations based on density functional theory (DFT+U) were applied to simulate the incorporated Fe in bulk montmorillonite and to explain the measured Fe K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra. The analysis of the experimental data and simulation results suggested that iron in montmorillonite is preferentially incorporated as Fe3+ into the octahedral layer. The simulations showed that there is no preferential occupation of cis- or trans-sites by Fe2+ and Fe3+ in bulk montmorillonite. A very good agreement between the ab initio simulated and the measured XAFS spectra demonstrate the robustness of the employed simulation approach.

Abstract
The small pore Cu-CHA zeolite is attracting increasing attention as a versatile platform to design novel single-site catalysts for deNO x applications and for the direct conversion of methane to methanol. Understanding at the atomic scale how the catalyst composition influences the Cu-species formed during thermal activation is a key step to unveil the relevant composition-activity relationships. Herein, we explore by in situ XAS the impact of Cu-CHA catalyst composition on temperature-dependent Cu-speciation and reducibility. Advanced multivariate analysis of in situ XANES in combination with DFT-assisted simulation of XANES spectra and multi-component EXAFS fits as well as in situ FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed N2 allow us to obtain unprecedented quantitative structural information on the complex dynamics during the speciation of Cu-sites inside the framework of the CHA zeolite.

Abstract
One of the long standing debates in actinide chemistry is the level of localization and participation of the actinide 5f valence orbitals in covalent bonds across the actinide series. Here we illuminate the role of the 5f valence orbitals of uranium, neptunium and plutonium in chemical bonding using advanced spectroscopies: actinide M4,5 HR-XANES and 3d4f RIXS. Results reveal that the 5f orbitals are active in the chemical bonding for uranium and neptunium, shown by significant variations in the level of their localization evidenced in the spectra. In contrast, the 5f orbitals of plutonium appear localized and surprisingly insensitive to different bonding environments. We envisage that this report of using relative energy differences between the 5fδ/φ and 5fπ*/5fσ* orbitals as a qualitative measure of overlap-driven actinyl bond covalency will spark activity, and extend to numerous applications of RIXS and HR-XANES to gain new insights into the electronic structures of the actinide elements.

Abstract
We show that the electronic structure of molecular first-row transition-metal complexes can be reliably measured using tabletop high-harmonic XANES at the metal M2,3 edge. Extreme ultraviolet photons in the 50-70 eV energy range probe 3p → 3d transitions, with the same selection rules as soft X-ray L2,3-edge absorption (2p → 3d excitation). Absorption spectra of model complexes are sensitive to the electronic structure of the metal center, and ligand field multiplet simulations match the shapes and peak-to-peak spacings of the experimental spectra. This work establishes high-harmonic spectroscopy as a powerful tool for studying the electronic structure of molecular inorganic, bioinorganic, and organometallic compounds.

Abstract
Combinational studies of synchrotron X-rays and neutrons have been performed to determine the site occupancy, valence state and magnetic structure of M-type BaTiMnFe10O19. X-ray resonant scattering studies have revealed the site preference, where Ti and Mn ions are distributed evenly over the Fe1, Fe2 and Fe3 sites of five independent Fe sites. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) results for BaTiMnFe10O19 are similar to those of BaFe12O19 at the Fe K absorption edge. Clear chemical shifts exist at both the Mn and Fe edges, suggestive of a mixed valence of Mn and Fe ions. The Mn K XANES resembles Mn–Zn ferrite, where the observed fourfold peak is explained as the presence of four-coordinated Mn ions, on the basis of the self-consistent calculation of relativistic density functional theory. This can be explained by the presence of spinel substructures within the S block layer. Satellite reflections of 002 ± τ and 004 − τ (τ = 2/3) on 00l were observed at a temperature of 8 K in neutron powder diffraction, due to magnetic scattering on the helicoidal arrangement of ordered spins with a propagation period of c/τ. The magnetic structure observed in the neutron powder diffraction and the XMCD results explain the decreasing uniaxial magnetization from BaFe12O19.

Abstract
X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy (X-TAS) has been used to study the light-induced hydrogen evolution reaction catalyzed by a tetradentate macrocyclic cobalt complex with the formula [LCo(III)Cl2](+) (L = macrocyclic ligand), [Ru(bpy)3](2+) photosensitizer, and an equimolar mixture of sodium ascorbate/ascorbic acid electron donor in pure water. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis of a binary mixture of the octahedral Co(III) precatalyst and [Ru(bpy)3](2+) after illumination revealed in situ formation of a Co(II) intermediate with significantly distorted geometry and electron-transfer kinetics of 51 ns. On the other hand, X-TAS experiments of the complete photocatalytic system in the presence of the electron donor showed the formation of a square planar Co(I) intermediate species within a few nanoseconds, followed by its decay in the microsecond time scale. The Co(I) structural assignment is supported by calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). At longer reaction times, we observe the formation of the initial Co(III) species concomitant to the decay of Co(I), thus closing the catalytic cycle. The experimental X-ray absorption spectra of the molecular species formed along the catalytic cycle are modeled using a combination of molecular orbital DFT calculations (DFT-MO) and finite difference method (FDM). These findings allowed us to assign the full mechanistic pathway, followed by the catalyst as well as to determine the rate-limiting step of the process, which consists in the protonation of the Co(I) species. This study provides a complete kinetics scheme for the hydrogen evolution reaction by a cobalt catalyst, revealing unique information for the development of better catalysts for the reductive side of hydrogen fuel cells.

Abstract
A new theoretical approach and computational package, FDMX, for general calculations of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) over an extended energy range within a full-potential model is presented. The final-state photoelectron wavefunction is calculated over an energy-dependent spatial mesh, allowing for a complete representation of all scattering paths. The electronic potentials and corresponding wavefunctions are subject to constraints based on physicality and self-consistency, allowing for accurate absorption cross sections in the near-edge region, while higher-energy results are enabled by the implementation of effective Debye-Waller damping and new implementations of second-order lifetime broadening. These include inelastic photoelectron scattering and, for the first time, plasmon excitation coupling. This is the first full-potential package available that can calculate accurate XAFS spectra across a complete energy range within a single framework and without fitted parameters. Example spectra are provided for elemental Sn, rutile TiO2 and the FeO6 octahedron.

Abstract
By modeling the Cu K-edge XANES of Cu-SSZ-13 from first principles, we find that the intensity and edge position does not only depend on the oxidation state of Cu, but also its coordination environment.

Abstract
Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy within the X-ray regime is now possible owing to the development of X-ray Free Electrons Lasers (X-FELs) and is opening new opportunities for the direct probing of femtosecond evolution of the nuclei, the electronic and spin degrees of freedom. In this contribution we use wavepacket dynamics of the photoexcited decay of a new Fe(ii) complex, [Fe(bmip)2]2+ (bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)pyridine), to simulate the experimental observables associated with femtosecond Fe K-edge X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) and X-ray emission (XES) spectroscopy. We show how the evolution of the nuclear wavepacket is translated into the spectroscopic signal and the sensitivity of these approaches for following excited state dynamics.
