Abstract
Charge transfer (CT) and electron transfer (ET) underlie the various applications of viologen compounds. However, the CT and ET in solids are still insufficiently understood and difficult to control, which is challenging but fundamental to the design of multifunctional materials. Our strategy is to attempt a delicate control of CT and ET by subjecting model compounds to pressure. In this work, a series of viologens of the same cation with different anions show anion-dependent color and piezo-/photochromism due to ground-state CT and stimuli-induced ET; the ease of solid-state ET can be tuned in the order of Cl- > Br- > I-/BF4-/PF6-/ClO4-. With in situ high pressure UV-vis experiments, we also observed unexpectedly the pressure-induced solid-state ET in [H2bcpV]·I2 besides the pressure modulation of the CT absorption. It proves pressure is a more powerful stimulus than light in tuning solid-state CT and ET.

Abstract
Smart materials that respond to chemical stimuli with color or luminescence changes are highly desirable for daily-life and high-tech applications. Here, we report a novel porous metal-organic framework (MOF) that shows multiple, selective, and discriminative responsive properties owing to the combination of different functional ingredients [tripyridinium chromogen, Eu(III) luminophore, cationic framework, and special porous structure]. The MOF contains two interpenetrated three-dimensional cationic coordination networks built of a tetrahedral [Eu4(μ3-OH)4] cluster and a tripyridinium-tricarboxylate zwitterionic linker. It shows reversible and discriminative chromic response to aliphatic amines and aniline through different host-guest interactions between electron-deficient pyridinium and electron-rich amines. The size- and shape-selective response to aliphatic amines is ascribed to the radical formation through host-guest electron transfer, whereas the response to aniline is ascribed to the formation of sandwich-type acceptor-donor-acceptor complexes. The MOF is capable of reversible anion exchange with various anions and shows selective and discriminative ionochromic response to iodide, bromide, and thiocyanate, which is attributed to charge-transfer complexation. The above chromic behaviors are accompanied by efficient quenching of Eu(III) photoluminescence. The MOF represents a multi-stimuli dual-output responsive system. It can be used for discrimination and identification of anions and amines. The potential use in invisible printing, reusable sensory films, and optical switches was demonstrated by the ink and the membrane made of the MOF and organic polymers.

Abstract
The development of new responsive smart materials has been highly desirable in the recent decade due to growing demand in our daily life, and extended viologen-based coordination polymers are regarded as proper and promising candidates for stimuli-responsive study. A tri(pyridinyl)pyridine viologen-based Kagome dual (kgd) topological coordination polymer, [Mn3Cl4(tpptb)2]·Cl2·(H2O)2, (tpptb = N,N',N″-tri(3-carboxybenzyl)-2,4,6-tri(pyridinium-4-yl)pyridine; 1) has been solvothermally synthesized, which can selectively respond to soft X-ray Al-Kα (λ = 8.357 Å) irradiation but not to UV light and hard X-rays of λ < 1.5418 Å at room temperature. Appealingly, 1 is very sensitive and convenient for the visual detection of various volatile amine vapors, especially ethylamine vapors at a low concentration of 100 ppm, and the vapochromic sample can be recovered after exposure in the air at room temperature. The sequence of amines in vapochromism could be rationalized by combined consideration of vapor pressure, the molecular size, and electron-donor ability of various amine molecules as well as the void spaces of 1. In addition, 1 exhibits an obvious hydrochromic transformation upon heating in the air and an anhydrous atmosphere. Combined XPS and EPR confirmed that these physical and chemical stimuli can cause electron transfer from electron-rich groups to quaternary nitrogen atoms of the ligand to generate charge-separated radicals, leading to soft X-ray-induced photochromic and selective vapochromic behavior of 1. Such behavior indicates that it will become a convenient, recyclable, and practical multifunctional material for chemical and environmental sensing. These results provide an effective avenue for the rational design and synthesis of multifunctional chromic materials for potential use in sensing devices.

Abstract
Increasing interest in chromic materials is due to the growing demand. However, most chromic materials exhibit color changes in response to only one stimulus, but there are multiple stimuli in nature. Therefore, the construction of multistimuli responsive chromic materials still faces great challenges. Herein, a new multi-stimuli responsive coordination polymer [Zn2(2,3-PDC)2CV·(H2O)2]·H2O (1) (2,3-PDC = 2,3-pyridine dicarboxylic acid, CV = N,N'-4,4'-bipyridiniodipropionate) has been successfully synthesized, which exhibits photochromism under 300 W xenon lamp irradiation accompanied by an obvious color change from colorless to light blue. Meanwhile, compound 1 displays excellent thermochromic properties with a color change from colorless to light yellow when heated at 106 °C. The product of thermochromism is named 1T and the loss of free water improves the photoresponsive properties of 1T. Moreover, the compound can show differentiable detection of amines because of the electron-deficient nature of the viologen. Finally, 1 shows excellent electrochromic properties and turns from colorless to purple at E = -3 V. In conclusion, compound 1 exhibits multi-chromic behaviors in response to light, heat, amines and electricity, which are prominent in viologen based coordination polymers.

Abstract
Viologen units have been widely used to impart metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with photochromic properties. However, construction of a stable photochromic system in viologen MOFs has not been fully explored. Herein, we report three examples of MOFs, namely, {[Cd(CEbpy)(m-BDC)(DMF)]·2H2O} n (1), {[Cd(CEbpy)(p-BDC)(H2O)]·H2O} n (2), and {[Zn(CEbpy)(p-HBDC)(p-BDC)0.5]·H2O} n (3) based on benzenedicarboxylic acids (m-H2BDC = 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, p-H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) and a viologen-derived ligand 1-carboxyethyl-4,4'-bipyridine (L = CEbpy). As expected, the incorporation of the viologen unit into the frameworks results in the predefined photochromism upon both sunlight and UV-light. Compounds 1-3 feature a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure and are all photochromic due to the formation of CEbpy radicals by photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The aggregates build an interesting stable crystalline framework that exhibits long-lived color constancy in the solid state.

Abstract
Pollutant detection is of great importance for quality control of drinking water and environmental protection. The common methods of pollutant detection suffer from time-consuming procedures, bulky and expensive instruments, and complicated sample pretreatment. Herein, a type of conceptually new self-amplified fluorescent nanoparticle (SAFN) is constructed based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens for rapid and visual detection of xylene in aqueous media. AIE luminogens are self-assembled into SAFNs in aqueous media, which emit efficiently due to the aggregation of luminogen molecules. The SAFNs of AIE luminogens stick xylene molecules from aqueous media through multiple interactions including hydrophobic and π-π interactions. Upon capturing xylene, SAFNs swell, which quench the fluorescence of the whole SAFNs, showing the self-amplification effect. Such a self-amplification effect is entirely different from that of conjugated polymers in the literature. Importantly, fluorescence quenching of SAFNs by xylene can be readily observed by the naked eye, which enables visual xylene sensing. The SAFNs enable rapid and visual detection of xylene in aqueous media with a low detection limit (5 μg/L) in the order of seconds. Given high sensitivity, rapid response, simple and easy operation, and low cost, SAFNs of AIE luminogens present a promising platform for visual detection of organic pollutants in aqueous media.

Abstract
Herein, we report the versatile ways to prepare both low-molecular weight hydrogels and polymeric hydrogels based on various types of supramolecular interactions, starting from a simple amphiphilic terpyridine-based molecule TPYA. Notably, we report that stable terpyridine-based radicals can be generated by light or heat irradiation in polymeric hydrogels based on hydrogen bonding interactions between -COOH of PAA and the terpyridine motif of TPYA for the first time. The generation of radicals is confirmed by EPR and UV-vis experiments, and the process is accompanied by significant color changes from white to dark purple. The stable radical hydrogels prepared by the supramolecular strategy are self-healing, stretchable, and self-supporting and can be molded into different geometrical shapes. It is deduced that the generation of terpyridine-based radicals enhances the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction of molecules in a hydrogel matrix, which is responsible for the self-healing ability. Finally, we also show that the radical gels can selectively respond to ammonia and stretch with reversible color changes based on the reversible hydrogen-bonding interaction.

Abstract
A kind of self-stabilized micelles of fluorescent block copolymers are constructed for rapid and sensitive detection of aliphatic amines in water based on capture-report strategy. An amphiphilic triblock copolymer functionalized with aggregation induced emission (AIE) chromophores self assembles into micelles with core-shell structures in aqueous solution. Hydrophobic AIE chromophores organize into cores, where hydrophobic interaction among the AIE chromophores inhibits the micelles from disassembling. The cores of AIE chromophores are surrounded by a corona of water-soluble polymer segments, endowing the micelles with superior dispersibility in water. Water-soluble polymer segments capture organic amines in water due to preferential hydrophobic interactions between them. The enriched amines in the corona subsequently diffuse into hydrophobic cores of micelles, quenching fluorescence of the AIE chromophores. The fluorescent micelles allow rapid detection of aliphatic amines in the order of seconds at a concentration as low as 8 μg/L.

Abstract
A flexible bipyridinium-linker-based porous host framework with electron-accepting pore surface, namely, [Zn2 (L)(pmc)1.5 ]⋅12 H2 O (1; L⋅Cl2 =1,1'-[1,4-phenylene-bis(methylene)]bis(4,4'-bipyridinium) dichloride, H4 pmc=pyromellitic acid) exhibits recognition of phenol and aromatic amine guests based on adsorbent-adsorbate charge-transfer interactions. Significantly, the resultant guest-encapsulated complexes 1@Guests can all be characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The host framework undergoes a reversible single crystal-to-single crystal transformation in response to the inclusion of different guests with flexible torsional motions of the hexagonal ring and the trapezoid-shaped bipyridinium groups. Such recognition can be visibly monitored and detected by obvious color changes. The host framework could also be recovered, and this suggested that guest sorption/desorption is reversible and that the host framework could be reused in potential applications. This work may provide an effective way to develop porous materials with special emphasis on applications involving guest recognition.

Abstract
A novel metal-organic hybrid photochromic compound [Zn (CV) (L2)]·2H2O (1) (CV = N,N'-4,4'-bipyridiniodipropionate, H2L2 = isophthalic acid) has been synthesized solvothermally. Compound 1 features a two-dimensional (2D) framework structure, exhibiting photochromic properties under sunlight and UV irradiation with an obvious color change from colorless to dark blue. Meanwhile, the luminescence properties of 1 were investigated, and the results suggested that 1 has good properties of detecting dichromate ions. Furthermore, compound 1 shows different color changes when exposed to different alkyl-amines, and 1 can also be deposited into paper to use as portable test strips. This work can be applied to practical applications as a multifunctional detector against light and chemicals.
