Characteristics and source apportionment of water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON) in PM2.5 in Hong Kong: With focus on amines, urea, and nitroaromatic compounds

Water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON) is ubiquitous in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and poses health and environmental risks. However, there is limited knowledge regarding its comprehensive speciation and source-specific contributions. Here, we conducted chemical characterization and source apportionment of WSON in 65 PM2.5 samples collected in Hong Kong during a 1-yr period. Using various mass-spectrometry-based techniques, we quantified 22 nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs), including 17 nitroaromatics (NACs), four amines, and urea. The most abundant amine and NACs were dimethylamine and 4-nitrocatechol, respectively. Two secondary (i.e., secondary formation and secondary nitrate) and five primary sources (i.e., sea salt, fugitive dust, marine vessels, vehicle exhaust, and biomass burning) of WSON and these three categories of NOCs were identified. Throughout the year, secondary sources dominated WSON formation (69.0%), while primary emissions had significant contributions to NACs (77.1%), amines (75.9%), and urea (83.7%). Fugitive dust was the leading source of amines and urea, while biomass burning was the main source of NACs. Our multi-linear regression analysis revealed the significant role of sulfate, NO3, nitrate, liquid water content, and particle pH on WSON formation, highlighting the importance of nighttime NO3 processing and heterogeneous and aqueous-phase formation of NOCs in the Hong Kong atmosphere.

Research on carbon dioxide capture materials used for carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage technology: a review

In recent years, climate change has increasingly become one of the major challenges facing mankind today, seriously threatening the survival and sustainable development of mankind. Dramatically increasing carbon dioxide concentrations are thought to cause a severe greenhouse effect, leading to severe and sustained global warming, associated climate instability and unwelcome natural disasters, melting glaciers and extreme weather patterns. The treatment of flue gas from thermal power plants uses carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, one of the most promising current methods to accomplish significant CO2 emission reduction. In order to implement the technological and financial system of CO2 capture, which is the key technology of CCUS technology and accounts for 70-80% of the overall cost of CCUS technology, it is crucial to create more effective adsorbents. Nowadays, with the development and application of various carbon dioxide capture materials, it is necessary to review and summarize carbon dioxide capture materials in time. In this paper, the main technologies of CO2 capture are reviewed, with emphasis on the latest research status of CO2 capture materials, such as amines, zeolites, alkali metals, as well as emerging MOFs and carbon nanomaterials. More and more research on CO2 capture materials has used a variety of improved methods, which have achieved high CO2 capture performance. For example, doping of layered double hydroxides (LDH) with metal atoms significantly increases the active site on the surface of the material, which has a significant impact on improving the CO2 capture capacity and performance stability of LDH. Although many carbon capture materials have been developed, high cost and low technology scale remain major obstacles to CO2 capture. Future research should focus on designing low-cost, high-availability carbon capture materials.

Synthesis of Indolines via Base-Mediated C-H Activation and Defluorinative C-N Coupling, with no Need for Transition-Metals

Syntheses of (partially) aromatic nitrogen heterocycles increasingly rely on transition-metal catalyzed C-C- and C-N-cross-coupling reactions. Here we describe a different approach to the synthesis of indolines by a domino C(sp3)-H activation, 1,2-addition, and defluorinative SNAr-cyclization sequence to provide the target 1,2-diarylindolines (1,2-diaryl-2,3-dihydroindoles) from ortho-fluorinated methyl-arenes and N-aryl imines (benzylidene anilines) in a cyclocondensation that is mediated by potassium hexa-methyl-di-silazide (KHMDS) as base exclusively. This transition-metal-free process via C-H and C-F bond activation provides a one-step entry into a wide array of indoline scaffolds (43 examples, up to 96% yield). This privileged substructure is common in natural products and pharmaceuticals alike, and cannot be accessed by traditional condensation reactions.

Electrochemical Synthesis of C(sp3)-Rich Amines by Aminative Carbofunctionalization of Carbonyl Compounds

Alkylamines form the backbone of countless nitrogen-containing small molecules possessing desirable biological properties. Despite advances in amine synthesis through transition metal catalysis and photoredox chemistry, multicomponent reactions that leverage inexpensive materials to transform abundant chemical feedstocks into three-dimensional α-substituted alkylamines bearing complex substitution patterns remain scarce. Here, we report the design of a catalyst-free electroreductive manifold that merges amines, carbonyl compounds and carbon-based radical acceptors under ambient conditions without rigorous exclusion of air and moisture. Key to this aminative carbofunctionalization process is the chemoselective generation of nucleophilic α-amino radical intermediates that readily couple with electrophilic partners, providing straightforward access to architecturally intricate alkylamines and drug-like scaffolds which are inaccessible by conventional means.

Convenient and efficient N-methylation of secondary amines under solvent-free ball milling conditions

In the present work, we report the development of a rapid, efficient, and solvent-free procedure for the N-methylation of secondary amines under mechanochemical conditions. After optimization of the milling parameters, a vibrational ball mill was used to synthesize 26 tertiary N-methylated amine derivatives in a short time of 20 min (30 Hz frequency) and high yields ranging from 78 to 95%. An exception was compounds having a hydroxyl group in their structure, for which a decrease in reaction efficiency was observed. During our research, we investigated alternate reaction selectivity occurring in compounds able to form ring closure products that are 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine derivatives instead of N-methylated products. The liquid-assisted grinding technique has been applied using formalin as a methylating agent and sodium triacetoxyborohydride as a reducing agent in a reductive amination reaction.

Recent Advances in Catalytic Systems for the Reduction of Aromatic and Aliphatic Nitrile Compounds to Amines

Amines are important and valuable compounds widely used in the chemical industry to produce various products such as dyes, detergents, solvents, additives, pharmaceutical products, and anti-foam agents. A property that distinguishes primary amines from other compounds is their straightforward functionalization. Therefore, the synthesis of different amine compounds has been considered by many researchers in recent years. Usually, primary amines are produced via amination of alcohols, reductive amination, and reduction of nitro and amide compounds. Furthermore, a useful and atom-economical method for producing primary amines is reducing nitrile compounds using catalytic systems. Traditionally, nitriles are reduced using metal hydrides such as LiAlH4 or NaBH4. These methods have important restrictions in terms of selectivity and waste generation. Hence, the heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts were investigated for the hydrogenation of nitriles to diverse amines. This review describes the performance of different catalytic systems for reducing nitrile compounds to their corresponding amines.

Novel xanthone derivatives as potent sirtuin 2 inhibitors

Six amino derivatives of xanthone were obtained via chemical synthesis. Biochemical studies revealed their SIRT2 inhibitory activity ranging from 48.5 % (compound 4, 5-chloro-2-((4-(3-methoxyphenyl)piperazin-1-yl)methyl)-9H-xanthen-9-one hydrochloride) to 93.2 % (compound 3, 5-chloro-2-(((2-methoxyphenethyl)amino)methyl)-9H-xanthen-9-one hydrochloride). The structure-activity analysis showed favourable properties of secondary amines relative to tertiary piperazine derivatives. The tested compounds do not possess additional SIRT1 activating activity and no antioxidant activity (DPPH in vitro assay). Comprehensive analysis of the lipophilicity of the obtained compounds was also performed. For compound 3 potential molecular targets and similar active compounds were predicted in order to facilitate further research in this group of compounds.

Elucidating the inhibitory effects of natural organic matter on the photodegradation of organic micropollutants: Atrazine as a probe compound

Natural organic matter (NOM) is a complex mixture of heterogeneous compounds with varying functional groups and molecular sizes. Understanding the impact of NOM on the generation of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs) and their potential inhibitory effects on photolysis has remained challenging due to the variations in the reactivities and concentrations of these functional groups. To address this gap, tannic acid (TA), gallic acid (GA), catechin (CAT), and tryptophan (Trp), were chosen as potential substitutes for NOM. Their effects on the photochemical transformation process were evaluated and compared with the widely used Suwannee River NOM (SRNOM). Atrazine (ATZ) was selected as a probe organic micropollutant (OMP). In this investigation, a significantly higher concentration of HO• was observed compared to O21, and the triplet excited state ( NOM*3). The findings suggest that the substituted phenols, particularly those with carboxylate-substitutions, played a substantial role in HO• formation, while electron-rich moieties acted as antioxidants, consuming NOM*3. Hydroxyl, carboxylic, and amino acid were the active groups for O21 formation. However, the inhibitory effects induced by the NOM surrogates were significant and mainly attributed to the direct photolysis inhibition caused by the inner filter effect. The scope of this work was further extended to include SRNOM, where similar trends with less pronounced formation of PPRIs and inner filter effects were observed. Therefore, this study sheds some light on the role of the functional groups in NOM during photochemical transformations of OMPs, thereby deepening our understanding of their fate in aqueous systems.

Skin secretions of Leptodactylidae (Anura) and their potential applications

The skin of anuran species is a protective barrier against predators and pathogens, showing also chemical defense by substances that represent a potential source for bioactive substances. This review describes the current chemical and biological knowledge from the skin secretions of Leptodactylidae species, one of the most diverse neotropical frog families. These skin secretions reveal a variety of substances such as amines (12), neuropeptides (16), and antimicrobial peptides (72). The amines include histamine and its methylated derivatives, tryptamine derivatives and quaternary amines. The peptides of Leptodactylidae species show molecular weight up to 3364 Da and ocellatins are the most reported. The peptides exhibit commonly glycine (G) or glycine-valine (GV) as C-terminal amino acids, and the most common N-terminal amino acids are glutamic acid (E), lysine (K), and valine (V). The substances from Leptodactylidae species have been evaluated against pathogenic microorganisms, particularly Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and the most active peptides showed MIC of 1-15 µM. Furthermore, some compounds showed also pharmacological properties such as immunomodulation, treatment of degenerative diseases, anticancer, and antioxidant. Currently, only 9% of the species in this family have been properly studied, highlighting a large number of unstudied species such as an entire subfamily (Paratelmatobiinae). The ecological context, functions, and evolution of peptides and amines in this family are poorly understood and represent a large field for further exploration.

Palladium N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Aminations: An Outline

Amination reactions play a pivotal role in synthetic organic chemistry, facilitating the generation of nitrogen-containing scaffolds with broad applications in drug synthesis, material production, polymer formation, and the generation of amino acids and peptides. Amination offers the potential to fine tune the properties of natural products and produce functional materials for various applications. Palladium N-heterocyclic carbene (Pd-NHC) emerges as an innovative and highly effective catalyst in this context. Under favorable reaction conditions, this robust and simple catalyst efficiently facilitates the synthesis of a diverse range of compounds with varying complexity and utility. Pd-NHC complexes exhibit significant σ-electron donating potential, enhancing the ease of the oxidative addition process in their mechanistic pathway. Their steric topography further contributes to a rapid reductive elimination. These complexes demonstrate remarkable stability, a result of the strong Pd-ligand bond. The wide variety of Pd-NHC complexes has proven highly efficient in catalyzing reactions across a spectrum of complexities, from simple to intricate. The domain of aminations catalyzed by Pd-NHC has undergone significant diversification, presenting new opportunities, particularly in the realms of material chemistry and natural product synthesis. This review outlines the advancements in Pd-NHC-catalyzed amination reactions, covering literature up to date.

Studying Local Electrostatics by Terahertz Spectroscopy Using Amines as a Probe

In a previous study[1] we could show that a large amplitude mode of the zwitterion glycine can serve as a sensitive probe for protonation and allows to deduce local pKa values. Here we show that the underlying concept is more general: We present the results of a pH dependent measurement of Terahertz-FTIR (THz-FTIR) spectra of solvated amines, i. e. Diethylamine (DEA), Triethylamine (TEA), and Diisopropylamine (DiPA). We show that amines serve as a sensitive, label free probe for local protonation. Protonation of the amines yield intensity changes which can be quantified by precise THz spectroscopy (30 cm-1 -450 cm-1 ). A detailed analysis allows us to correlate the titration spectra of solvated amines in the THz range with pKa values. This demonstrates the potential of THz spectroscopy to probe the charge state of biomolecules in water in a label free manner.

A three-in-one versatile sensor for concise detecting biogenic amines and beef freshness

Biogenic amines (BAs), as important indicators for evaluating food spoilage caused by fermentation processes or microbial activities, present significant risks of food safety. Consequently, the development of a simple, sensitive, and selective detection method for amines is of great importance. In this study, we proposed a three-in-one sensor 3,6-bis(dimethylamino)-9-(ethylthio)xanthylium (PSE) for high sensitivity and selectivity detecting BAs with multimodal responses, including olfactory, colorimetric, and fluorescent signals, thus facilitating convenient real-time detection of BAs. Mechanism study indicated that the nucleophilic substitution of PSE with BAs induced such rapid multi-responses with a low detection limit (LOD = 0.03 μM). We further fabricated PSE loaded paper for portable detection of BAs vapors. And the accurate determination of BAs levels is achieved through analyzing the RGB color mode. Finally, we successfully applied these test strips for non-destructive assessing meat beef freshness with the assistance of a smartphone in on-site scenarios.

Revisiting the Landscape of Potential Small and Drug Substance Related Nitrosamines in Pharmaceuticals

N-Nitrosamines are a class of indirect acting mutagens, as their metabolic degradation leads to the formation of the DNA-alkylating diazonium ion. Following up on the in-silico identification of thousands of nitrosamines that can potentially be derived from small molecule drugs and their known impurities described in a previous publication, we have now re-analyzed this dataset to apply EMA's Carcinogenic Potency Categorization Approach (CPCA) introduced with the 16th revision of their Q&A document for Marketing Authorization Holders. We find that the majority of potential nitrosamines from secondary amine precursors belongs to potency categories 4 and 5, corresponding to an acceptable daily intake of 1500 ng, whereas nitrosamines from tertiary amine precursors distribute more evenly among all categories, resulting in a substantial number of structures that are assigned the more challenging acceptable intakes of 18 ng/day and 100 ng/day for potency categories 1 and 2, respectively. However, the nitrosative dealkylation pathway for tertiary amine is generally far slower than the direct nitrosation on secondary amines, with a direct nitrosation mechanism suspected only for structures featuring electron-rich (hetero)aromatic substituents. This allows for greater focus towards those structures that require further review, and we demonstrate that their number is not substantial. In addition, we reflect on the nitrosamine risk posed by secondary amine API impurities and demonstrate that based on the ICH Q3A/B identification threshold unknown impurities may exist that could be transformed to relevant amounts of NA. We also demonstrate that the analytical sensitivity required for the quantification of high potency nitrosamines can be problematic especially for high dose APIs. In summary, the regulatory framework rolled out with the latest Q&A document represents a substantial improvement compared with the previous situation, but further refinement through interaction between manufacturers, regulators, not-for-profit and academic institutions will be required to ensure patient access to vital medicines without compromising safety.

Dual Role of TiO(acac)2 as a Reagent and an Activator/Catalyst: A Study on the Solvent Dependent Product Formation

The dual operation of a chemical species in synthetic chemistry is an intriguing and relatively unexplored phenomenon. The application of such a species is expected to reduce the use of multiple reaction partners and catalysts/activators. Herein, we report a simple and easy-to-use protocol for the twin application of TiO(acac)2 , as a reagent and an activator to synthesize β-enamino ketones with amines in acetonitrile. The same early transition metal precursor when employed in N,N-dimethylformamide with the amines, resulted in the formation of the substituted amides. Both reactions were explored with various substrates to check the viability of the present protocol. Moreover, experimental studies were conducted to understand the mechanism of both reactions.

Synthesis of Complex Diarylamines through a Ring-Opening Difunctionalization Strategy

The diarylation and skeletal diversification of unstrained cyclic amines was exploited to expand and modify the favorable properties of this important substrate class with pivotal roles in drug discovery. Cyclic amines were employed in the synthesis of a novel class of amino-substituted diaryliodonium salts, which were converted to highly functionalized diarylamines through an atom-efficient one-pot N-arylation/ring opening reaction with external nucleophiles. The reaction proceeds through in situ formation of a diarylammonium intermediate that undergoes a nucleophilic ring opening by cleavage of the strong C-N bond. A wide variety of diarylamines was obtained through introduction of two different aryl groups of varied electronics, and the retained iodo-substituent enables downfield diversifications of the products. More than 20 nucleophiles, including amines, phenols, carboxylic acids, thiols and halides, were alkylated with high functional group tolerance, and the strategy proved efficient also in in late-stage functionalization of natural products and pharmaceuticals.

Selective C-H Activation of Unprotected Allylamines by Control of Catalyst Speciation

An outstanding challenge in the Pd-catalyzed functionalization of allylamines is the control of stereochemistry. Terminal alkenes preferentially undergo Heck-type reactions, while internal alkenes may undergo a mixture of Heck and C-H activation reactions that give mixtures of stereochemical products. In the case of unprotected allylamines, the challenge in achieving C-H activation is that facile in situ formation of Pd nanoparticles leads to preferential formation of trans rather than cis-substituted products. In this study we have demonstrated the feasibility of using mono-protected amino acid (MPAA) ligands as metal protecting groups to prevent aggregation and reduction, allowing the selective synthesis of free cis-arylated allylamines. This method complements Heck-selective methods, allowing complete stereochemical control over the synthesis of cinnamylamines, an important class of amine that can serve as therapeutics directly or as advanced intermediates. To highlight the utility of the methodology, we have demonstrated rapid access to mu opioid receptor ligands.

Contribution of marine biological emissions to gaseous methylamines in the atmosphere: An emission inventory based on multi-source data sets

Methylamines are a class of highly reactive organic alkaline gases in the atmosphere. At present, the gridded emission inventories of amines used in the atmospheric numerical model is mostly based on the amine/ammonia ratio method and do not consider the air-sea exchange of methylamines, which oversimplifies the emission scenario. Marine biological emissions (MBE), an important source of methylamines, has been insufficiently investigated. These shortcomings in the inventories can limit the simulation of amines by numerical models in the context of compound pollution in China. To acquire a more complete gridded inventory of amines (monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamines (DMA), and trimethylamines (TMA)), we established a more reasonable MBE inventory of amines by using multi-source data sets (Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Chlorophyll-a (Chla), Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), NH3 column concentration (NH3), and Wind Speed (WS)), and merged it with the anthropogenic emissions (AE) inventory (by adopting the amine/ammonia ratio method and the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC)). The new methodology can reveal the air-sea exchange fluxes and direction of different amines. Oceans can act as a sink for DMA and source for TMA while it can be either a source or sink for MMA. The concentration of amines above the coastal area increased significantly when the MBE was merged to the AE inventory. TMA and MMA showed significant increases, TMA increased by 43,917.0 %, and 804.0 %, in July 2015 and December 2019, respectively; while MMA increased by 2635.4 % and 0.37 % during the same periods; however, only slight changes were observed in the DMA concentration (-3.9 % in July 2015, and 1.1 % in December 2019). WS, Chla, and the total dissolved concentration of amines ([C+(s)tot]) were found to be the dominant factors affecting MBE fluxes. In addition, the emission fluxes and spatial distribution of AE, and wet deposition also affect the simulation of amines concentration.

Photocatalyzed Aminomethylation of Alkyl Halides Enabled by Sterically Hindered N-Substituents

The catalytic C(sp3 )-C(sp3 ) coupling of alkyl halides and tertiary amines offers a promising tool for the rapid decoration of amine skeletons. However, this approach has not been well established, partially due to the challenges in precisely distinguishing and controlling the reactivity of amine-coupling partners and their product homologues. Herein, we developed a metal-free photocatalytic system for the aminomethylation of alkyl halides through radical-involved C(sp3 )-C(sp3 ) bond formation, allowing for the synthesis of sterically congested tertiary amines that are of interest in organic synthesis but not easily prepared by other methods. Mechanistic studies disclosed that sterically hindered N-substituents are key to activate the amine coupling partners by tuning their redox potentials to drive the reaction forward.

Metal Free Dötz-Type Aminobenzannulation Reaction via 1,1-Dipoles Cross-Coupling

Aryl amines are of constant interest in organic synthesis owing to their ubiquity in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and organic materials. However, C-H amination or pre-functionalization frequently results in uncontrollable site selectivity, over activation and the generation of inseparable mixtures of regio-isomers. Here we present a novel metal free Dötz-type aminobenzannulation reaction that circumvents the selectivity issues inherent in aromatic chemistry, as well as the use of stoichiometric unstable organolithium reagents and toxic chromium complexes. The concept of utilizing readily available isocyanides and Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates to achieve 1,1-dipoles cross-coupling to construct ketenimine is the key to success, which has been experimentally and computationally verified. The tandem 6π-electrocyclization/aromatization process offers a versatile method for synthesizing functionalized anilines, fused aryl amines and fused heteroaryl amines.

Metal-Free Directed Site-Selective Csp3 -H Borylation of Saturated Cyclic Amines

The borylation of Csp3 -H bonds is a challenging transformation that is typically restricted to transition metal catalysis. Herein, we report the site-selective metal-free Csp3 -H borylation of saturated cyclic amines. It is possible to selectively borylate piperidine derivatives at the α or β positions according to the reaction conditions. The mechanism was supported by NMR spectroscopy, calorimetry experiments and density functional theory (DFT) computations. It suggests that the piperidine is dehydrogenated by complexation with BBr3 to produce an enamine intermediate, which is in turn borylated at either the α or β position according to the reaction conditions.

Programmable Amine Synthesis via Iterative Boron Homologation

The value of Matteson-type reactions has been increasingly recognized for developing automated organic synthesis. However, the typical Matteson reactions almost exclusively focus on homologation of carbon units. Here, we report the detailed development of sequential insertion of nitrogen and carbon atoms into boronate C-B bonds, which provides a modular and iterative approach to access functionalized tertiary amines. A new class of nitrenoid reagents is uncovered to allow direct formation of aminoboranes from aryl or alkyl boronates via N-insertion. The one-pot N-insertion followed by controlled mono- or double-carbenoid insertion has been realized with widely available aryl boronates. The resulting aminoalkyl boronate products can undergo further homologation and various other transformations. Preliminary success on homologation of N,N-dialkylaminoboranes and sequential N- and C-insertions with alkyl boronates have also been achieved. To broaden the synthetic utility, selective removal of a benzyl or aryl substituent permits access to secondary or primary amine products. The application of this method has been demonstrated in the modular synthesis of bioactive compounds and the programmable construction of diamines and aminoethers. A plausible reaction mechanism, supported by preliminary NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and computational studies, is also proposed.

CO2 -Based Carbamate Synthesis Utilizing Reusable Polymer-Supported DBU

The present study highlights a novel and advantageous protocol for accessing carbamates through the well-established three-component coupling reaction involving CO2 , amines, and alkyl halides. By employing an immobilized organic base, operating under mild reaction conditions, an array of alkyl carbamates in yields of up to 95 % could be isolated. This approach offers a broad and versatile product scope, allowing for the facile modification of both the amine and alkyl halide reactants. Notably, the pioneering use of an immobilized organic base, specifically the polymer-supported 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (PS-DBU), in this three-component reaction eliminates the need for classical purification steps, streamlining the process. To ensure practicality and sustainability, extensive studies were conducted to verify the recovery and reusability of the polymer-supported DBU catalyst, which consistently maintained the high chemical yield of the carbamates across multiple cycles. Overall, this innovative protocol represents a significant advancement in carbamate synthesis, combining efficiency, generality, and the potential for DBU recycling.

Retention mechanisms of rasagiline and its analogues on superficially porous particle vancomycin- and teicoplanin-based chiral stationary phases

Retention and separation of enantiomers of amine derivatives of indane and tetralin (rasagiline and its analogues) on chiral stationary phases (CSPs) Chiral-T and Chiral-V with teicoplanin and vancomycin antibiotics grafted onto superficially porous silica particles under conditions of reversed-phase and polar organic chromatography were studied. The mobile phases (MP) were water-methanol and acetonitrile-methanol solvents modified with triethylamine-acetic acid buffer. The effects of molecular structure and physical properties of the analytes on enantioselective retention are discussed. The retention mechanism is hypothesized to involve the ion-ion attraction between the positively charged amino group of an analyte and the carboxylate anion of either antibiotic. The binding occurs outside of the antibiotic's aglycon basket that accounts for relatively low enantioselectivity observed. The presence of a large substitute at the analyte's amino group complicates enantiorecognition. The effect of the MP solvent composition on retention and enantioseparation was investigated. It is a complex phenomenon combined of different oppositely directed influences that resulted in different shapes, increasing, decreasing, or U-shaped, of the retention factor vs. composition dependences. A model taking into account the interaction of both solvents of a binary MP with both an analyte and an adsorption site was successfully applied to approximate a majority of the studied systems. Pros and cons of the model are discussed.

Nonagricultural emissions enhance dimethylamine and modulate urban atmospheric nucleation

Gas-phase dimethylamine (DMA) has recently been identified as one of the most important vapors to initiate new particle formation (NPF), even in China's polluted atmosphere. Nevertheless, there remains a fundamental need for understanding the atmospheric life cycle of DMA, particularly in urban areas. Here we pioneered large-scale mobile observations of the DMA concentrations within cities and across two pan-region transects of north-to-south (∼700 km) and west-to-east (∼2000 km) in China. Unexpectedly, DMA concentrations (mean ± 1σ) in South China with scattered croplands (0.018 ± 0.010 ppbv) were over three times higher than those in the north with contiguous croplands (0.005 ± 0.001 ppbv), suggesting that nonagricultural activities may be an important source of DMA. Particularly in non-rural regions, incidental pulsed industrial emissions led to some of the highest DMA concentration levels in the world (>2.3 ppbv). Besides, in highly urbanized areas of Shanghai, supported by direct source-emission measurements, the spatial pattern of DMA was generally correlated with population (R² = 0.31) due to associated residential emissions rather than vehicular emissions. Chemical transport simulations further show that in the most populated regions of Shanghai, residential DMA emissions can contribute for up to 78% of particle number concentrations. Shanghai is a case study for populous megacities, and the impacts of nonagricultural emissions on local DMA concentration and nucleation are likely similar for other major urban regions globally.

Benzothiazole-based novel fluorescence probe sensing 1, 3-diaminopropane

Amines are extensively present in biological systems and are abundantly used in research, industries and agriculture. Systematic detection and quantification of certain amines can help us in food quality control and diagnosis of many diseases. A Schiff base probe HL was designed and successfully synthesized. It was proposed as a sensor for the exclusive detection of 1, 3- diaminopropane through turn-on fluorescence response in a variety of solvents including water. Micromolar limits of detection was achieved in all these solvents. Mechanism of detection was proposed by investigating mass spectrometric and NMR results. These were corroborated with DFT/TD-DFT calculations. Spiking experiments performed in various real water samples revealed the potential of the sensor to be used in day-to-day applications. Paper strip experiments demonstrated the suitability of the probe for real-life applications.

Elemental Magnesium as an Early Transition Metal Substitute: From Pentafulvene Coordination to Deprotonation of Amines

The reaction of magnesium turnings and 6,6-di-para-tolylpentafulvene was investigated. Under mild conditions, the magnesium dissolves, forming the MgII complex 1 with a π-η5:σ-κ1 coordinating ligand of the dimerized pentafulvene, analyzed by NMR and XRD investigations. As a magnesium pentafulvene complex was a possible intermediate, amines were employed as intercepting agents. Thereby, the amines were formally deprotonated by elemental magnesium, yielding the first examples of Cp'Mg(THF)2NR2 complexes. This reaction competes with the formation of 1 and a consecutive formal [1,5]-H-shift forming an ansa-magnesocene. Employing amines with low basicity gave quantitative conversion to the amide complexes.

B(C6 F5 )3 -Catalyzed Regioselective Ring Opening of Cyclic Amines with Hydrosilanes

Opening the ring of cyclic amines by regioselective fission of one of the carbon-nitrogen bonds greatly expands the repertoire of available nitrogen-containing skeletons. Unlike approaches starting from cyclic tertiary amines, methods that can directly open secondary amines are still scarce. The present work discloses an efficient reductive ring opening of either of these cyclic amines using PhSiH₃ under B(C₆ F₅ )₃ catalysis. By this, the direct transformation of unstrained cyclic amines into the corresponding acyclic amines is achieved in a simple one-pot operation. A stepwise mechanism proceeding through the intermediacy of silylammonium ions followed by reductive cleavage of a carbon-nitrogen bond was experimentally verified.

Manganese-Catalyzed Hydrogenative Desulfurization of Thioamides

Earth-abundant transition metal catalysis has emerged as an important alternative to noble transition metal catalysis in hydrogenation reactions. However, there has been no Earth-abundant transition metal catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides reported so far, presumably due to the poisoning of catalysts by sulfur-containing molecules. Herein, we described the first manganese-catalyzed hydrogenative desulfurization of thioamides to amines or imines. The key to success is the use of MnBr(CO)₅ instead of commonly-employed pincer-manganese catalysts, together with simple NEt₃ and CuBr. This protocol features excellent selectivity on sole cleavage of the C=S bond of thioamides, in contrast to the only known Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides, and unprecedented chemo-selectivity tolerating vulnerable functional groups such as nitrile, ketone, aldehyde, ester, sulfone, nitro, olefin, alkyne and heterocycle, which are usually susceptible to common hydride-type reductive protocols.

Chemoselective Oxidation of Alcohols in the Presence of Amines Using an Oxoammonium Salt

The oxidation of alcohols in the presence of reactive amines employing the commercially available oxoammonium cation, "Bobbitt's salt" is described. The oxidation is accomplished under acidic conditions and subsequent treatment with a suitable base affords a convenient one-pot method to access imines in good to excellent isolated yields (74-99%).

Steric, Electronic and Conformational Synergistic Effects in the Gold(I)-catalyzed α-C-H Bond Functionalization of Tertiary Amines

Direct C-H bond functionalization is a useful strategy for the straightforward formation of C-C and C-Heteroatom bonds. In the present work, a unique approach for the challenging electrophilic Au-catalyzed α-C-H bond functionalization of tertiary amines is presented. Electronic, steric and conformational synergistic effects exerted by the use of a malonate unit in the substrate were key to the success of this transformation. This new reactivity was applied to the synthesis of tetrahydro-γ-carboline products which, under oxidative conditions, could be converted into valuable structural motifs found in bioactive alkaloid natural products.

Insights into the different mixing states and formation processes of amine-containing single particles in Guangzhou, China

The formation processes of particulate amines are closely related to their emission sources and secondary reactions, which can be revealed through the investigation of their real-time mixing states in individual particles. The mixing states of methylamine (MA)-, trimethylamine (TMA)-, and diethylamine (DEA)-containing particles were studied using a high-performance single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (HP-SPAMS) in Guangzhou, China, in January 2020. The sharp increase in TMA particles was found to be closely associated with the increase in the ambient relative humidity (RH), while the MA- and DEA-containing particles were not similarly influenced by the changes in the RH. The prominent enrichment of secondary oxygenated organics in DEA particles during the daytime was consistent with the active period of photochemistry, implying that the sharp decrease in DEA particles in the afternoon was likely due to photo-oxidation of the DEA. The number fraction (N_f) of DEA particles, the N_f of the nitrate in the DEA particles, and the abundance of nitrate increased as the NO_x content all increased during the nighttime, suggesting that the formation of DEA·HNO₃ salt was the dominant pathway of particulate DEA production. These results are consistent with our previous measurements in Nanjing, confirming the general and distinct mixing states of TMA and DEA particles. Positive matrix factorization analysis revealed that the total fraction of the more oxidized organics factor and the less oxidized organics factor were much higher in the DEA particles (26.9 %) than in the TMA particles (9 %), confirming the significant enrichment of oxygenated species in the DEA particles. The different mixing states of the amines revealed the unique response of each type of amine to the same atmospheric environment, and the prominent mixing states of the DEA with secondary oxygenated species suggest the potential role of DEA in tracing the evolution of organic aerosols.

Amine-Rich Carbon Dots as Novel Nano-Aminocatalytic Platforms in Organic Synthesis

The development of novel and effective metal-free catalytic systems, which can drive value-added organic transformations in environmentally benign solvents (for instance, water), is highly desirable. Moreover, these new catalysts need to be harmless, easy-to-prepare, and potentially recyclable. In this context, amine-rich carbon dots (CDs) have recently emerged as promising nano-catalytic platforms. These nitrogen-doped nanoparticles, which show dimensions smaller than 10 nm, generally consist of carbon cores that are surrounded by shells containing numerous amino groups. In recent years, organic chemists have used these surface amines to guide the design of several synthetic methodologies under mild operative conditions. This Concept highlights the recent advances in the synthesis of amine-rich carbon dots and their applications in organic catalysis, including forward-looking opportunities within this research field.

Exergy, advance exergy, and exergo-environmental based assessment of alkanol amine- and piperazine-based solvents for natural gas purification

Purification of Natural gas is vital for utilizing it as a source of energy harvesting for the world. Amine-based chemical absorption technique is the most utilized in the gas field for the purification of gas that ensures the purity of the sweet gas stream with the elimination of carbon dioxide. However, it is considered an energy-intensive process to deal with considerable energy loss and environmental damage to the ecosystem. Five cases have been developed in this study based on various blends comprising mono and tertiary amines in combination with piperazine with a focus on the use of Aqueous Monodiethanolamine (Aq. MDEA), Aqueous Monoethanolamine (Aq. MEA) and piperazine (Pz) for the CO₂ sequestration from the sour natural gas extracted from the remote location located in the province of Baluchistan in Pakistan. The use of exergy, advanced exergy, and exergo environment for optimizing and selecting a suitable solvent combination that may result in an effective separation process has been proposed. Five cases have been developed based on various blends such as mono and tertiary amines combined with piperazine. From the results of all the studied scenarios, Case IV, based on the combination of Aqueous monoethanolamine and piperazine, provides reduced exergy destruction of 2551.7 KW. It was observed that the maximum removal of CO₂ around 99.87 wt% is achieved in case IV. In addition, advance exergy analysis also highlights that case-IV has a venue of 25% exergy destruction avoidable, which would further enhance its performance. Nevertheless, still, case-IV has 75% exergy destruction unavoidable. The environmental factors show that Case-IV has a reduced exergy destruction factor of 0.96, a highly environmentally benign choice as a solvent with a high value of 1.03, and case-IV has the higher operational stability and higher exergy efficiency with an exergy stability value of 0.40. Therefore, monoethanolamine combined with piperazine to be an effective and efficient solvent blend that could be an energy-effective approach for sweetening the natural gas.

Seasonal variations of imidazoles in urban areas of Beijing and Guangzhou, China by single particle mass spectrometry

Imidazoles (IMs) are potential contributors to brown carbon; they may notably contribute to climate radiative forcing. However, only a few studies have assessed the mixing state, seasonal and spatial distributions of IMs, and influencing factors for IM formation in urban aerosols. In this study, two single-particle aerosol mass spectrometers were employed to investigate the IM-containing particles in the urban areas of Beijing and Guangzhou, China. IM-containing particles were identified in the size range (d_va) of 0.2-2.0 μm, accounting for 0.7-21.7 % of all the detected particles. The number fractions of IM-containing particles in both cities were the lowest in winter and the highest in spring, probably owing to the difference in the abundance of precursors and the particle acidity. Majority of (60-80 % by number) the IM-containing particles were mixed with organic carbon (OC), with the lowest fractions found in summer. Although the number fractions of IM-containing particles in Beijing were generally higher (~1.5-3 times) than those in Guangzhou, the mixing states of the IM-containing particles at these two sites were only slightly different. Potassium-rich (K-rich) and potassium-sodium (KNa) particles were rarely found in Guangzhou; they accounted for ~15 % of the IM-containing particles in Beijing. Additionally, our results indicate that particles with higher acidity are favorable for IM formation. These findings help improving our knowledge of the mixing state, seasonal variation, and spatial distribution of IMs in urban aerosols, and the insights in influencing factors into IM formation provide valuable information for future studies of the atmospheric chemical processes associated with IMs.

Mechanoresponsive Carbamoyloximes for the Activation of Secondary Amines in Polymers

Mechanophores are molecular moieties that are incorporated into polymers and respond to force with constitutional, configurational, or conformational bond rearrangements to enable functionality. Up to today, several chemically latent motifs have been activated by polymer mechanochemical methods, but the generation of secondary amines remains elusive. Here we report carbamoyloximes as mechanochemical protecting groups for secondary amines. We show that carbamoyloximes undergo force-induced homolytic bond scission at the N-O oxime bond in polymers thus producing the free amine, as the reaction proceeds via the carbamoyloxyl and aminyl radicals, analogously to its photochemical counterpart. Eventually, we apply the carbamoyloxime motif in a force-activated organocatalytic Knoevenagel reaction. We believe that this protecting strategy can be universally applied for many other secondary and primary amines in polymer materials.

Thermodynamics and Spectroscopy of Halogen- and Hydrogen-Bonded Complexes of Haloforms with Aromatic and Aliphatic Amines

Similarities and differences of halogen and hydrogen bonding were explored via UV–Vis and ¹H NMR measurements, X-ray crystallography and computational analysis of the associations of CHX₃ (X=I, Br, Cl) with aromatic (tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine) and aliphatic (4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane) amines. When the polarization of haloforms was taken into account, the strengths of these complexes followed the same correlation with the electrostatic potentials on the surfaces of the interacting atoms. However, their spectral properties were quite distinct. While the halogen-bonded complexes showed new intense absorption bands in the UV–Vis spectra, the absorptions of their hydrogen-bonded analogues were close to the superposition of the absorption of reactants. Additionally, halogen bonding led to a shift in the NMR signal of haloform protons to lower ppm values compared with the individual haloforms, whereas hydrogen bonding of CHX₃ with aliphatic amines resulted in a shift in the opposite direction. The effects of hydrogen bonding with aromatic amines on the NMR spectra of haloforms were ambivalent. Titration of all CHX₃ with these nucleophiles produced consistent shifts in their protons’ signals to lower ppm values, whereas calculations of these pairs produced multiple hydrogen-bonded minima with similar structures and energies, but opposite directions of the NMR signals’ shifts. Experimental and computational data were used for the evaluation of formation constants of some halogen- and hydrogen-bonded complexes between haloforms and amines co-existing in solutions.

Large contributions of anthropogenic sources to amines in fine particles at a coastal area in northern China in winter

Amines in fine particles constitute a significant fraction of secondary organic aerosols and have adverse effects on air quality and human health. To understand the chemical composition, variation characteristics, and potential sources of fine particulate amines in the coastal area in northern China, field sampling and chemical analysis were conducted in coastal Qingdao in the winter of 2018 and 2019. A total of 15 major amines were identified and quantified by using an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The average concentration of total amines in PM_2.5 samples was approximately 130 ng m^-3. Dimethylamine was the most abundant species with average fractions of 44.8% and 65.0% in the quantified amines during the two field campaigns, followed by triethylamine (22.9% and 8.7%) and methylamine (8.3% and 4.4%). The amines in PM_2.5 usually exhibited elevated concentrations in the presence of high levels of SO₂ and NO_x or in the condition of high relative humidity. A receptor model of positive matrix factorization was employed and seven major sources were identified, including coal combustion, industrial production, vehicle exhaust, biomass burning, agricultural activities, secondary formation, and marine emission. Surprisingly, most of 15 amines in fine particles primarily originated from the primary emissions of anthropogenic activities particularly related to coal combustion and industrial productions, which should be given close concern to address the amine pollution.

Influence of meteorological parameters and oxidizing capacity on characteristics of airborne particulate amines in an urban area of the Pearl River Delta, China

Nine amine species in atmospheric particles during haze and low-pollution days with low and high relative humidity (RH) were analyzed in urban Guangzhou, China. The mean concentrations of total measured amines (Ʃamines) in fine particles were 208 ± 127, 63.7 ± 21.3, and 120 ± 20.1 ng m^-3 during haze, low pollution-low RH (LP-LRH), and low pollution-high RH (LP-HRH) episodes, respectively. The dominant amine species were methylamine (MA), dimethylamine (DMA), diethylamine (DEA) and dibutylamine (DBA), which in total accounted for 82-91% of the Ʃamines during different pollution episodes. The contributions of Ʃamines-C to water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and Ʃamines-N to water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON) were 1.52% and 2.49% during haze, 1.24% and 1.96% during LP-LRH, and 2.00 and 2.98% during LP-HRH days, respectively. The mass proportion of Ʃamines in fine particles was higher during LP-HRH periods (0.19%) than during haze and LP-LRH periods (0.16%). The mass proportion of DBA in Ʃamines increased from 7% during haze and LP-LRH episodes to 25% during LP-HRH episodes. Compared with other amines, DBA showed a stronger linear relationship with RH (r = 0.867, p < 0.01), which demonstrates its high sensitivity to high RH conditions. Meteorological parameters (including RH, the mixed layer depth, wind speed and temperature), the oxidizing capacity (ozone concentration), and gaseous pollutants (NO_x and SO₂) correlated with amines under different pollution conditions. Under high RH, acid-base reactions were the dominant pathway for the gas-to-particle distribution of amines in urban areas, while direct dissolution dominated in the background site. To our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to conduct in situ measurements of particulate amines during different pollution conditions in China, and further research is needed to in-depth understanding of the influence of amines on haze formation.

Metal-Free N-H Bond Activation by Phospha-Wittig Reagents

N‐containing molecules are mostly derived from ammonia (NH₃). Ammonia activation has been demonstrated for single transition metal centers as well as for low‐valent main group species. Phosphinidenes, mono‐valent phosphorus species, can be stabilized by phosphines, giving so‐called phosphanylidenephosphoranes of the type RP(PR′₃). We demonstrate the facile, metal‐free NH₃ activation using ArP(PMe₃), affording for the first time isolable secondary aminophosphines ArP(H)NH₂. DFT studies reveal that two molecules of NH₃ act in concert to facilitate an NH₃ for PMe₃ exchange. Furthermore, H₂NR and HNR₂ activation is demonstrated.

Orthogonal Access to α-/β-Branched/Linear Aliphatic Amines by Catalyst-Tuned Regiodivergent Hydroalkylations

Linear, α-branched, and β-branched aliphatic amines are widespread in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fine chemicals. Thus, the development of direct and efficient methods to these structures in a tunable manner is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, a catalyst-controlled synthesis of α-branched, β-branched and linear aliphatic amines from Ni/Co-catalyzed regio- and site-selective hydroalkylations of alkenyl amines with alkyl halides is developed. This catalytic protocol features the reliable prediction and control of the coupling position of alkylation to provide orthogonal access to α-branched, β-branched and linear alkyl amines from identical starting materials. This platform unlocks orthogonal reactivity and selectivity of nickel hydride and cobalt hydride chemistry to catalytically repurpose three types of alkyl amines under mild conditions.

Photoinduced α-C-H Amination of Cyclic Amine Scaffolds Enabled by Polar-Radical Relay

Herein, we report a polar-radical relay strategy for α-C-H amination of cyclic amines with N-chloro-N-sodio-carbamates. The relay is initiated by in situ generation of cyclic iminium intermediate using N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) oxidant as an initiator, which then operates through a series of polar (addition and elimination) and radical (homolysis, hydrogen- and halogen atom transfer) reactions to enable the challenging C-N bond formation in a controlled manner. A broad range of α-amino cyclic amines were readily accessed with excellent regioselectivity, and the superb applicability was further demonstrated by functionalization of biologically relevant compounds.

From Structural Design to Functional Construction: Amine Molecules in High-Performance Formamidinium-Based Perovskite Solar Cells

Formamidinium (FA) based perovskites are considered as one of the most promising light-absorbing perovskite materials owing to their narrower band gap and better thermal stability compared to conventional methylammonium-based perovskites. Constant improvement by using various additives stimulates the potential application of these perovskites. Amine molecules with different structures have been widely used as typical additives in FA-based perovskite solar cells, and decent performances have been achieved. Thus, a systematic review focusing on structural regulation and functional construction of amines in FA-based perovskites is of significance. Herein, we analyze the construction mechanism of different structural amines on the functional perovskite crystals. The influence of amine molecules on specific perovskite properties including defect conditions, charge transfer, and moisture resistance are evaluated. Finally, we summarize the design rules of amine molecules for the application in high-performance FA-based perovskites and propose directions for the future development of additive molecules.

Copper-Catalyzed Substrate-Controlled Carbonylative Synthesis of α-Keto Amides and Amides from Alkyl Halides

Controllable production of α-keto amides and amides from the same substrates is an attractive goal in the field of transition-metal-catalyzed (double-)carbonylation. Herein, a novel copper-catalyzed highly selective double carbonylation of alkyl bromides has been developed. Moderate to good yields of α-keto amides were obtained as the only products. In the case of alkyl iodides, double- and mono-carbonylation can be achieved controllably under different conditions.

Seasonal characteristics of atmospheric water-soluble organic nitrogen in PM2.5 in Seoul, Korea: Source and atmospheric processes of free amino acids and aliphatic amines

The seasonal characteristics of atmospheric water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON) in particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 μm or smaller (PM_2.5) were analyzed focusing on sources and atmospheric processing. Daily collected samples over 23 h (10:00-9:00) from 7 August 2018 to 31 December 2019 on quartz filters with a high-volume sampler at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in Seoul were considered. The most common species in the Seoul atmosphere included Glycine (5.45 ± 9.81 ng/m³) among free amino acids (FAAs) and trimethylamine (TMA) (5.35 ± 3.80 ng/m³) among aliphatic amines (AAs). The top 10 WSON species (93.6% of all WSON species) were categorized into three groups based on correlation analysis considering meteorological data, (e.g., temperature, rainfall, relative humidity (RH), wind speed) gaseous pollutants (e.g., SO₂, CO, NO₂) and mass concentration of PM₁₀ and PM_2.5. Those three groups are G1 (Glycine, Alanine, and Threonine), G2 (Gln Glutamine, Lys Lysine, and Glutamic acid) and G3 (Trimethylamine (TMA), dimethylamine (DMA), and methylamine (MA)), where G1, G2 and G3 accounted for 31.1%, 8.8% and 51.1%, respectively, of the total species. Among these three groups, G1 and G3 are from combustion sources, and G2 shows secondary features generated by photochemical reactions involving ozone. Although both G1 and G3 exhibited features influenced by combustion sources, the AA species (TMA, DMA, and MA) in G3 demonstrated typical features enhanced under high-humidity conditions, suggesting not only primary sources but also secondary formation at the local scale influence to the AA in G3 group. Based on long-term measurements more than a year, our findings suggest that complex and diverse sources of atmospheric WSON are in Seoul, Korea both from primary and secondary, which may affect its environmental, climate and health.

Benzothiazole derivatives based colorimetric and fluorescent probes for detection of amine/ammonia and monitoring the decomposition of urea by urease

Amines play critical roles in chemical, agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. However, volatile amine vapours cause widespread pollution and threaten human health. An efficient, highly sensitive and recyclable sensor for monitoring amine vapours is highly demanded. Typically, 2-(2-hydroxy-5-methyl) benzothiazole (HBT) derivates exhibit excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena in keto form originated from a unique excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. In this work, we have designed and synthesized two HBT-based fluorescent probes for ratiometric detection toward amine vapours and ammonia. In addition, the detection limits for ammonia were calculated as 226 ppm and 13 ppm respectively. Additionally, the test strips and electrospinning film dopped with fluorescent probes were utilized to recognize amine vapours and ammonia colorimetric with high sensitivity in solid states. According to the above characteristics, probes could monitor the biological activity of urease conveniently and rapidly.

On-DNA Pd and Cu-Promoted C-N Cross-Coupling Reactions

DNA-encoded library (DEL) recently has witnessed the swift development which has led to the new chemical entities identified for a wealthy biological interesting target; several small molecular inhibitors have moved into the late-stage clinical development. The success of DEL is heavily dependent on the chemical space which was assembled by the on-DNA chemical reactions. On-DNA C-N cross-coupling has great value for expanding the chemical space of DEL as amines are most abundant organic reagents available. Here we described the first on-DNA C-N cross-coupling reactions promoted by both Pd and Cu.

Stereoselective Synthesis of Tertiary Allylic Amines by Titanium-Catalyzed Hydroaminoalkylation of Alkynes with Tertiary Amines

Intermolecular hydroaminoalkylation reactions of symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkynes with tertiary amines take place in the presence of catalytic amounts of TiBn₄, Ph₃C[B(C₆F₅)₄], and a sterically demanding aminopyridinato ligand precursor. The resulting products, synthetically and pharmaceutically useful tertiary β,γ‐disubstituted allylic amines, are formed in convincing yields and with excellent stereoselectivity. Particularly promising for future applications is the fact that even the industrial side product trimethylamine can be used as a substrate.

Selective C(sp3 )-N Bond Cleavage of N,N-Dialkyl Tertiary Amines with the Loss of a Large Alkyl Group via an SN 1 Pathway

Polar disconnection of the C(sp³ )-N bond of N,N-dialkyl-substituted tertiary amines via ammonium species conventionally favored the loss of the smaller alkyl group by an S_N 2 displacement, while selective C(sp³ )-N bond cleavage by cutting off the larger alkyl group is still underdeveloped. Herein, we present a novel Pd⁰ -catalyzed [2+2+1] annulation, proceeding through an alkyne-directed palladacycle formation and consecutive diamination with a tertiary hydroxylamine by cleaving its N-O bond and one C(sp³ )-N bond, for the rapid assembly of tricyclic indoles in a single-step transformation. Noteworthy, experimental results indicated that large tert-butyl and benzyl groups were selectively cleaved via an S_N 1 pathway, in the presence of a smaller alkyl group (Me, Et, ⁱ Pr). Under the guidance of this new finding, tricyclic indoles bearing a removable alkyl group could be exclusively obtained by using a (α-methyl)benzyl/benzyl or tert-butyl/2-(methoxycarbonyl)ethyl mixed amino source.

Sustainable catalyst-free N-formylation using CO2 as a carbon source

The development of new sustainable catalytic conversion methods of carbon dioxide (CO2) is of great interest in the synthesis of valuable chemicals. N-formylation of CO2 with amine nucleophiles as substrates has been studied in depth. The key to benign formylation is to select a suitable reducing agent to activate CO2. This paper showcases the activation modes of CO2 and the construction strategies of sustainable and catalyst-free N-formylation systems. The research progress of catalyst-free N-formylation of amines and CO2 is reviewed. There are two broad prominent categories, namely reductive amidation of CO2 facilitated by organic solvents and ionic liquids in the presence of hydrosilane. Attention is also paid to discussing the involved reaction mechanism with practical applications and identifying the remaining challenges in this field.

Amino Appended Coumarin Composites for Pb2+ Capturing in Aqueous Medium

The C1-C3 receptors were synthesized by using coumarin and amines viz., 1-butylpiperazine (1), cis-myrtanylamine (2), and 3-methyldiphenyl amine (3) at room temperature without using harsh conditions. All the probes show beautiful and strong binding with Pb²⁺ ions among all the tested essential elements of human body. The binding is clearly seen and confirmed in UV-visible, NMR and HPLC studies. Also, all the substituted amines (1-3) are well known bioactives viz., piperazine as anthelmintic, cis-myrtanyl use for cannabinoid receptor (CB2) antagonists, 3-methyldiphenyl is used in probes for selective detection of explosive nitroaromatic compounds further increases their sensitivity for use as Pb²⁺ sensor. As they are already well in use for research on human body metabolomics their future introduction as sensors in the human body for lead toxicity is highly favourable.
