Fluorinated amphiphilic polymers and their blends for fouling-release applications: the benefits of a triblock copolymer surface

Anti-fouling Coatings of Poly(dimethylsiloxane) Devices for Biological and Biomedical Applications

Fouling initiated by nonspecific protein adsorption is a great challenge in biomedical applications, including biosensors, bioanalytical devices, and implants. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), a popular material with many attractive properties for device fabrication in the biomedical field, suffers serious fouling problems from protein adsorption due to its hydrophobic nature, which limits the practical use of PDMS-based devices. Effort has been made to develop biocompatible materials for anti-fouling coatings of PDMS. In this review, typical nonfouling materials for PDMS coatings are introduced and the associated basic anti-fouling mechanisms, including the steric repulsion mechanism and the hydration layer mechanism, are described. Understanding the relationships between the characteristics of coating materials and the accompanying anti-fouling mechanisms is critical for preparing PDMS coatings with desirable anti-fouling properties.

One-step dip coating of zwitterionic sulfobetaine polymers on hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces

Zwitterionic sulfobetaine polymers with a catechol chain end (DOPA-PSB) were applied to a variety of hydrophobic polymer sheets and fibers. In addition, a silica surface was tested as a representative hydrophilic substrate. The polymer-coated surfaces showed significantly lower fouling levels than uncoated controls. Because of the anti-polyelectrolyte nature of sulfobetaine zwitterionic polymers, the effect of salt concentration on the coating solutions and the quality of the polymer coating against fouling are studied. The coating method involves only water-based solutions, which is compatible with most surfaces and is environmentally friendly. To demonstrate the versatility of the reported method, we evaluated the fouling levels of the polymer coating on commonly used polymeric surfaces such as polypropylene (PP), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polystyrene (PS), nylon, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

Antifouling, high-flux nanofiltration membranes enabled by dual functional polydopamine

A facile method for fabricating antifouling and high-flux nanofiltration (NF) membranes was developed based on bioinspired polydopamine (PDA). Polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membrane as the support was first deposited a thin PDA layer and then chemically modified by a new kind of fluorinated polyamine via Michael addition reaction between fluorinated polyamine and quinone groups of PDA. PDA coating significantly reduced the pore sizes of the PES support membrane and endowed the NF membrane with high separation performance (flux about 46.1 L/(m(2) h) under 0.1 MPa, molecular weight cutoff of about 780 Da). The grafted fluorinated polyamine on the PDA layer could form low free energy microdomains to impede the accumulation/coalescence of foulants and lower the adhesion force between foulants and the membrane, rendering the membrane surface with prominent fouling-release property. When foulant solutions (including bovine serum albumin, oil and humic acid) were filtered, the resultant NF membrane exhibited excellent antifouling properties (the minimal value of total flux decline ratio was ∼8.9%, and the flux recovery ratio reached 98.6%). It is also found that the structural stability of the NF membrane could be significantly enhanced due to the covalent bond and other intermolecular interactions between the PDA layer and the PES support.

Amphiphilic triblock copolymers with PEGylated hydrocarbon structures as environmentally friendly marine antifouling and fouling-release coatings

The ideal marine antifouling (AF)/fouling-release (FR) coating should be non-toxic, while effectively either resisting the attachment of marine organisms (AF) or significantly reducing their strength of attachment (FR). Many recent studies have shown that amphiphilic polymeric materials provide a promising solution to producing such coatings due to their surface dual functionality. In this work, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of different molecular weights (Mw = 350, 550) was coupled to a saturated difunctional alkyl alcohol to generate amphiphilic surfactants (PEG-hydrocarbon-OH). The resulting macromolecules were then used as side chains to covalently modify a pre-synthesized PS8 K-b-P(E/B)25 K-b-PI10 K (SEBI or K3) triblock copolymer, and the final polymers were applied to glass substrata through an established multilayer surface coating technique to prepare fouling resistant coatings. The coated surfaces were characterized with AFM, XPS and NEXAFS, and evaluated in laboratory assays with two important fouling algae, Ulva linza (a green macroalga) and Navicula incerta, a biofilm-forming diatom. The results suggest that these polymer-coated surfaces undergo surface reconstruction upon changing the contact medium (polymer/air vs polymer/water), due to the preferential interfacial aggregation of the PEG segment on the surface in water. The amphiphilic polymer-coated surfaces showed promising results as both AF and FR coatings. The sample with longer PEG chain lengths (Mw = 550 g mol(-1)) exhibited excellent properties against both algae, highlighting the importance of the chemical structures on ultimate biological performance. Besides reporting synthesis and characterization of this new type of amphiphilic surface material, this work also provides insight into the nature of PEG/hydrocarbon amphiphilic coatings, and this understanding may help in the design of future generations of fluorine-free, environmentally friendly AF/FR polymeric coatings.

A comparison between different fouling-release elastomer coatings containing surface-active polymers

Surface-active polymers derived from styrene monomers containing siloxane (S), fluoroalkyl (F) and/or ethoxylated (E) side chains were blended with an elastomer matrix, either poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) or poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) (SEBS), and spray-coated on top of PDMS or SEBS preformed films. By contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, it was found that the surface-active polymer preferentially populated the outermost layers of the coating, despite its low content in the blend. However, the self-segregation process and the response to the external environment strongly depended on both the chemistry of the polymer and the type of matrix used for the blend. Additionally, mechanical testing showed that the elastic modulus of SEBS-based coatings was one order of magnitude higher than that of the corresponding PDMS-based coatings. The coatings were subjected to laboratory bioassays with the marine alga Ulva linza. PDMS-based coatings had superior fouling-release properties compared to the SEBS-based coatings.

In Situ Probing the Surface Restructuring of Antibiofouling Amphiphilic Polybetaines in Water

Antibiofouling materials have a wide range of applications in biomedical devices and marine coatings. Due to the amphiphilic nature of proteins and organisms, amphiphilic materials have been designed to resist their unspecific adsorption. Surface restructuring behavior of amphiphilic materials in water is believed to play a key role in the antibiofouling mechanisms. In this work, the surface structures of several amphiphilic polybetaine coatings in water have been probed in situ using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. These are novel polybetaines constructed from functionalized polynorbornenes. The polybetaines with oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG), octyl (C8), or fluorinated (F13) side chains exhibit different surface restructuring behaviors upon contacting water due to their different surface hydrophobicity. The OEG and C8 chains were present and ordered at the water interface, while the F13 chain withdrew from water. The hydrophilic betaine group extended into the water and formed hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The surface restructuring of these materials detected using SFG can be well correlated to their antibiofouling performance, providing an understanding of their antibiofouling mechanisms.

Improved antifouling properties of polymer membranes using a 'layer-by-layer' mediated method

Polymeric reverse osmosis membranes were modified with antifouling polymer brushes through a 'layer by layer' (LBL) mediated method. Based on pure physical electrostatic interaction, the attachment of LBL films did not alter separation performance of the membranes. In addition, the incorporation of an LBL film also helped to amplify the number of potential reaction sites on the membrane surfaces for attachment of antifouling polymer brushes, which were then attached to the surface. Attachment of the brushes included two different approaches, grafting to and grafting from. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle measurements showed successful growth of the LBL films and subsequently the polymer brushes. Using this method to modify reverse osmosis membranes, preliminary performance testing showed the antifouling properties of the as-modified membranes were much better than the virgin membrane with no significant loss in water flux and salt rejection.

A Polyurethane Surface Modifier: Contrasting Amphiphilic and Contraphilic Surfaces Driven by block and random Soft Blocks having Trifluoroethoxymethyl and PEG Side Chains

A conventional MDI-BD-PTMO polyurethane was modified using 2 wt.% polyurethanes (U) having copolyoxetane soft blocks with hydrophobic 3F, CF₃CH₂OCH₂- and hydrophilic MEn, CH₃O(CH₂CH₂O)_nCH₂-, n = 3, 7) side chains. In contrast to neat 3F-co-MEn-U, 2 wt.% 3F-co-MEn-U compositions have physically stable morphologies and wetting behavior. Surface composition (XPS) and amphiphilic or contraphilic wetting are controlled by the 3F-co-MEn polyoxetane soft block architecture and MEn side chain length. Importantly, θ_rec can be tuned for 2 wt.% 3F-co-MEn-U compositions independent of swelling, which is controlled by the bulk polyurethane. AFM imaging led to a new morphological model whereby fluorous/PEG-hard block nano-aggregates combine to form near surface features culminating in micron scale texturing.
