Abstract
A pyrene based amphiphilic receptor has been utilized in the nanomolar detection of uric acid at physiological pH in water. The compound shows a unique concentration-dependent modulation in optical response toward uric acid. In intramolecular/static excimer form (low concentration range), it displays a ratiometric response, while a "turn-off" sensing is observed specifically in the presence of intermolecular/dynamic excimer (high concentration range). The present protocol is then employed for the estimation of uric acid in blood serum samples of healthy individuals. Bland-Altman analysis in comparison to clinically approved uricase assay indicated the high accuracy of the present method. Additionally, the extent of insect infestation in stored grain samples was determined by measuring the uric acid content of their aqueous extracts. Low-cost color strips were developed for on-site detection of uric acid without involving any sophisticated instrument or trained personnel.

Abstract
Two simple and novel gelators (G-P with pyridine and G-B with benzene) with different C-4 substitution groups on naphthalimide derivatives have been designed and characterized. Two gelators could form organogels in some solvents or mixed solvents. The self-assembly processes of G-P in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile/H2O (1/1, v/v) and G-B in acetonitrile were studied by means of electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The organogel of G-P in the mixed solvent of acetonitrile/H2O (1/1, v/v) formed an intertwined fiber network, and its emission spectrum had an obvious blue shift compared with that of solution. By contrast, the organogel of G-B in acetonitrile formed a straight fiber, and its emission had an obvious red shift compared with that of solution. G-P and G-B were employed in detecting nitroaromatic compounds because of their electron-rich property. G-P is more sensitive and selective toward 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) compared with G-B. The sensing mechanisms were investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopic experiments and theoretical calculations. From these experimental results, it is proposed that electron transfer occurs from the electron-rich G-P molecule to the electron-deficient TNP because of the possibility of complex formation between G-P and TNP. The G-P molecule could detect TNP in water, organic solvent media, as well as using test strips. It is worth mentioning that the organogel G-P can not only detect TNP but also remove TNP from the solution into the organogel system.

Abstract
In this study, we show that a novel kind of cholesterol-based gelator NPS containing pyridyl and naphthalimide units can visually discriminate cyclohexane/cyclopentane from hexane/pentane on the basis of distinct optical differences in the gel platform, which is not observed in solution. The effect of congeneric solvents on the gel properties, such as morphology, rheology, and stimuli-responsive properties, is also studied. Intriguingly, NPS can form self-supporting, self-healing, fluorescent, and highly visible transmittance gels in cyclohexane that can selectively and visually respond to picric acid. It is deduced that NPS adopted H-type aggregation mode in cyclohexane, and the gel exhibits a strong green emission, whereas, in hexane, J-type aggregates of NPS molecules are observed with yellow emission. Correlations between the gelation properties and Hansen solubility parameters indicate that the dispersion interactions are the main factor for the selective gelation of NPS toward short-chain alkanes. A comparison of Hansen solvent parameters indicated that a similar energetic weight of the hydrogen-bonding units is the major contribution for the strong and specific interaction between NPS and cyclohexane. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the NPS xerogel can selectively solidify cyclohexane in the single-phase liquid of solvent mixtures, exhibiting fast gelation, high separation efficiency (>92%), and easy recycling of gelator and liquids. To the best of our knowledge, herein, we report the first paradigm that molecular gel formation is developed to visually discriminate and separate organic analogues of solvents with similar polarity.

Abstract
In this work, two naphthalimide-based compounds, 1a and 1b, have been designed and synthesized. Both compounds can form stable two-component gels in n-propanol or n-butanol upon addition of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) followed by sonication at room temperature. Interestingly, the 1a/α-CD gel is thixotropic and very sensitive to water. Addition of a small amount of water induces rapid gel collapse, allowing further development of the gel as a visual relative humidity sensor. Specificity of the sensor has been confirmed using several approaches, such as scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR spectroscopy experiments. The results show that α-CD acts as a junction for the assembly of 1a or 1b through hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl and amide groups. Upon addition of water, α-CD interacts with the adamantane group of 1a via an incomplete host-guest encapsulation, resulting in the dissociation of the hydrogen-bonding-assisted two-component assembly, accompanied by gel collapse.

Abstract
Ammonia is not only a highly important gas for civilization but also contribute significantly for climate change and human health hazard. Highly sensitive ammonia sensor has been developed from a fluorescent zwitterionic spirocyclic Meisenheimer complex. Moreover, formation of this Meisenheimer complex can also be utilized for selective as well as naked eye instant detection of nitro aromatic explosive picric acid. The presence of a quaternary nitrogen atom directly attached to the spiro carbon is the unique feature of this Meisenheimer complex. This excellent photoluminescent (PL) Meisenheimer complex has two distinct stimuli responsive sites. One is sensitive towards acid while the other one is towards the base. These two positions can be modulated by adding one equivalent acid and one equivalent base to result two new products which are non fluorescent. One of these two non fluorescent species was found very exciting because of its UV/Vis transparency. Utilizing this concept we have fabricated an on-line sensor for measuring ammonia in dry or humid and condensing sewer air. The sensor was robust against ambient temperature and humidity variation. We have also developed an invisible ink from this Meisenheimer complex, with potential application for security purpose.

Abstract
π-Expanded butterfly-like 2D fluorenes and 3D spirobifluorenes 1-5 were synthesized via a DDQ-mediated oxidative cyclization strategy with a high regioselectivity. Through structural modification via π-expansion, it was possible to achieve near-ultraviolet absorption, bright-blue emission, very high near-unity fluorescence quantum yields in solution as well as in film states, and deep-lying HOMO energy levels with excellent thermal stabilities. Furthermore, these electron-rich compounds displayed a notable behavior towards sensing of nitroaromatic explosives, such as picric acid, up to a detection limit of 0.2 ppb.

Abstract
Plant pests exert serious effects on food production due to which the global crop yields are reduced by ~20–40 percent per year. Hence to meet the world’s food needs, loses of food due to crop pests must be reduced. Herein the silicon dioxide based MEMS devices are covalently functionalized for robust and efficient optical sensing of the female sex pheromones of the pests like Helicoverpa armigera for the first time in literature. The functionalized devices are also capable of selectively measuring the concentration of this pheromone at femtogram level which is much below the concentration of pheromone at the time of pest infestation in an agricultural field. Experiments are also performed in a confined region in the presence of male and female pests and tomato plants which directly mimics the real environmental conditions. Again the reversible use and absolutely trouble free transportation of these pheromone nanosensors heightens their potentials for commercial use. Overall, a novel and unique approach for the selective and reversible sensing of female sex pheromones of certain hazardous pests is reported herein which may be efficiently and economically carried forward from the research laboratory to the agricultural field.

Abstract
A heteroatom containing organic fluorophore 6,7-dimethyl-2,3-bis-(2-pyridyl)-quinoxaline (BPQ) is weakly emissive in solution but its emission properties are highly enhanced in the aggregated state due to the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) and large amplitude vibrational modes, demonstrating the phenomenon, aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE). It has strong proton capture capability, allowing reversible fluorescence switching in basic and acidic medium and the emission color changes from blue to green in the aggregated state through protonation. It has been explained as a competition between intramolecular charge transfers (ICTs) and the AIEE phenomena at a lower pH range (pH ∼1-4). Such behavior enables it as a fluorescent pH sensor for detection in acidic and basic medium. Morphologies of the particles are characterized using optical and field emission scanning electron microscopic (FESEM) studies. The turn off fluorescence properties of aggregated BPQ have been utilized for the selective detection of picric acid and the fluorescence quenching is explained due to ground state complexation with a strong quenching constant, 7.81 × 10(4) M(-1).

Abstract
The remarkable ability of a charge-transfer (CT) complex prepared from a pyrene-based donor (Py-D) and a naphthalenediimide-based acceptor (NDI-A) led to the formation of a deep-violet in color, transparent hydrogel at room temperature (RT-gel). Simultaneously, the RT-gel was diluted beyond its critical gelator concentration (CGC) to obtain a transparent sol. Very interestingly, the resultant sol, on heating above 70 °C, transformed into a heat-set gel instantaneously with a hitherto unknown CGC value. Detailed studies revealed the smaller globular aggregates of the RT-gels fuse to form giant globules upon heating, which, in turn, resulted in heat-set gelation through further aggregation. The thermoresponsive property of Py-D alone and 1 : 1 Py-D : NDI-A CT complex was investigated in detail which revealed the hydrophobic collapse of the oxyethylene chains of the CT complex upon heating was mainly responsible for heat-set gelation. Thixotropy, injectability, as well as stimuli responsiveness of the RT-gels were also addressed. In contrast, heat-set gel did not show thixotropic behavior. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the xerogel depicted lamellar packing of the CT stacks in the gel phase. Single crystal XRD studies further evidenced the 1 : 1 mixed CT stack formation in the lamellae and also ruled out orthogonal hydrogen bonding possibilities among the hydrazide unit in the CT gel although such interaction was observed in a single crystal of NDI-A alone. In addition, a Ag(+)-ion triggered metallogelation of NDI-A and nematic liquid-crystalline property of Py-D were also observed.

Abstract
Halogen-bonding-induced self-assembly in the solution of equimolar mixtures of certain pyridyl-ended oligo p-phenylenevinylene (OPV)-derivatives with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene is reported. The mode of self-assembly, that is, cocrystallization, thixotropic gelation, or precipitation, depends strongly on the nature of chains (n-alkyl chains as a function of length or short oxyethylene chain) appended to the OPV-backbone as well as on the cooling rate of the corresponding hot solution. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the cocrystals reveal the "infinite" chain formation via C-I···N halogen-bonding interactions between the two components. In addition, multiple noncovalent interactions induce cross-links among these halogen-bonded "infinite" chains. Interestingly, the molecular packing in the "Cogel" bearing OPV-derivative with oxyethylene chains is found to be very similar to that of the cocrystal of the same.

Abstract
A series of monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene-tripeptide conjugates have been synthesized and investigated as new low-molecular mass organogelators. It was found that most of these compounds could immobilize low-polarity solvents readily and the gelation behaviors of these gelators showed a dependence on the amino acid residues. These organogels were thoroughly studied using various techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the cooperative interplay of hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and SS interactions were the main driving force for the formation of the gels. Of all the organogels, the aromatic solvent gels, such as toluene gel, exhibited multiple-stimulus responsiveness towards heating, shaking, chemical redox activity and the presence of anions, thus leading to reversible sol-gel phase transitions. Most interestingly, gelation in the presence of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in organic solvents could be observed visually with a concomitant color change through donor-acceptor interactions. The strength of the charge-transfer interaction between gelators and TNP was proportional to the incubation time and increasing critical gelation concentration (CGC). The gels could function as efficient absorbents for potential application in removal of crystal violet and rhodamine B dyes from water.

Abstract
Two novel bent-shaped π-organogelators 6a and 6b having different terminal pyridine rings as responsive sites were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. A subtle difference in the position of the N atom at the pyridine ring greatly affected their fluorescence and gelation properties. 6b showed remarkably stronger fluorescence both in solution and in the solid state as compared to 6a. Theoretical calculation revealed a clear discrepancy in the electron distribution between them. Furthermore, driven by π–π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction, both 6a and 6b can gelate several organic solvents with different polarities. Rheological studies, spectroscopic tests and powder X-ray diffraction showed that 6a displayed a closer stacking mode leading to stronger gel robustness. The xerogel films of 6a and 6b were prepared and utilized to detect acid vapours. Both of them can fulfil the detection of acid vapours through a distinct fluorescence change which could be seen by the naked eye under a UV lamp, but with different sensing modes. A rare gel to gel transformation was also observed upon exposure to acid vapours accompanied by a morphological change.

Abstract
This report describes how the luminescence of naphthalimide could be tuned by various physical stimuli, including heat, sonication, and grinding. Herein, instant and switchable control of color and fluorescent emissions has been achieved by the sonication-triggered gelation of an organic liquid with naphthalimide-based organogelators (N3-N7). Green emissive suspensions of the gelators in organic liquids are transformed into orange emissive gels upon brief irradiation with ultrasound with an emission wavelength red-shift of approximately 60 nm and fluorescence intensity quenching by a factor of 20, which can subsequently be reversed by heating. When sonication-triggered S-gels are evaporated to S-xerogels, the solid state xerogels (N3, N4, N6, N7) exhibit mechanochromism, the color of which changes from red to yellow and the emission color of which changes from orange to green with enhanced intensity by grinding. This mechanochromic property can be reversed through a regelation process. The mechanochromic character of the S-xerogel of N3 is thus applied to quantitatively sense the mechanical pressure range from 2 to 40 MPa through fluorescence changes, reflecting a new type of application for gelation assembly. The physical stimuli triggered fluorescence changes of these compounds strongly depend on the molecular structure and solvent. The results demonstrate that the different aggregation modes and long-range order arrangement of the molecules regulated by the stimulus may affect the internal charge transfer (ICT) process of the naphthalimide groups, resulting in the tunability of the photophysical properties of the gelators. This report provides a new strategy for tunable and switchable control of luminescence through nonchemical stimuli in aggregation-based monocomponent systems.

Abstract
A particular bispyrene fluorophore (1) with two pyrene moieties covalently linked via a hydrophilic spacer was synthesized. Fluorescence measurements reveal that the fluorescence emission of 1 could be well modulated by a cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). Protein sensing studies illustrate that the selected ensemble based on 1/DTAB assemblies exhibits ratiometric responses to nonmetalloproteins and turn-off responses to metalloproteins, which can be used to differentiate the two types of proteins. Moreover, negatively charged nonmetalloproteins can be discriminated from the positively charged ones according to the difference in ratiometric responses. Fluorescence sensing studies with control bispyrenes indicate that the polarity of the spacer connecting two pyrene moieties plays an important role in locating bispyrene fluorophore in DTAB assemblies, which further influences its sensing behaviors to noncovalent interacting proteins. This study sheds light on the influence of the probe structure on the sensing performance of a fluorescent ensemble based on probe and surfactant assemblies.

Abstract
A new, rapid, sensitive, selective and portable fluorescence detection method for nitroaromatics based on polymer dots (Pdots) had been successfully developed not only in aqueous media but also in the solid state with test strips. The fluorescence quenching rates were proportional to the concentrations of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in the range of 0.2-20.0 μg mL(-1) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) in the range of 0.05-6.0 μg mL(-1), when Pdots were used as ratiometric fluorescent sensors in aqueous solution. The 3σ limit of detection of PNP reached 18.8 ng mL(-1). Compared with polymer-based detection for nitroaromatics in the organic phase, the signal enhancement effect was initially found when Pdots were used to detect nitroaromatics in the aqueous phase. The mechanism of the interaction between Pdots and nitroaromatics was revealed as an electron transfer phenomenon from the electron-rich chromophoric probe to the electron deficient nitroaromatics. The results indicated that Pdots-based detection was particularly suitable for on-site qualitative detection and quantitative analysis of nitroaromatics.

Abstract
The remarkable capability of nature to design and create excellent self-assembled nano-structures, especially in the biological world, has motivated chemists to mimic such systems with synthetic molecular and supramolecular systems. The hierarchically organized self-assembly of low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) based on non-covalent interactions has been proven to be a useful tool in the development of well-defined nanostructures. Among these, the self-assembly of sugar-derived LMWGs has received immense attention because of their propensity to furnish biocompatible, hierarchical, supramolecular architectures that are macroscopically expressed in gel formation. This review sheds light on various aspects of sugar-derived LMWGs, uncovering their mechanisms of gelation, structural analysis, and tailorable properties, and their diverse applications such as stimuli-responsiveness, sensing, self-healing, environmental problems, and nano and biomaterials synthesis.

Abstract
A naphthalimide-based fluorescent gelator (N1) containing an alkenyl group has been designed and characterized. This material is able to gelate alcohols via a precipitate-to-gel transformation when triggered with ultrasound for less than 2 min (S-gel). The gelation process in n-propanol was studied by means of absorption, fluorescence, and IR spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and X-ray diffraction patterns. The fluorescence intensity of N1 decreased during the gelation process in a linear relationship with the sonication time. The S-gel of N1 could be used to sense aliphatic and aromatic amines by measuring the change in the signal output. For example, the addition of propylamine to the S-gel of N1 resulted in a dramatic enhancement of the fluorescence intensity, accompanied by a gel-to-sol transition. On the contrary, when the S-gel of N1 was treated with aromatic amines such as aniline, fluorescence was quenched and there was no gel collapse. The sensing mechanisms were studied by (1)H NMR, small-angle X-ray scattering, SEM and spectroscopic experiments. It is proposed that isomerization of the alkenyl group of N1 from the trans to cis form occurs when the S-gel is treated with propylamine, resulting in a gel-sol transition. However, the aromatic aniline molecules prefer to insert into the gel networks of N1 via hydrogen-bonding and charge-transfer interactions, maintaining the gel state. As potential applications, testing strips of N1 were prepared to detect aniline.

Abstract
Development of a rapid and effective method for the detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in aqueous phase has attracted great attention. In this work, the fluorescent porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of PCN-224 were successfully exploited as a fluorescent probe for the rapid and selective TNT detection in water media. This strategy combined the advantages of fluorescent porphyrin molecules and porous MOFs, which not only overcame the aggregation of hydrophobic tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) recognition sites but also promoted TNT to interact with recognition sites in virtue of the high surface and intrinsic open structure of MOFs. As a result, a rapid response time of as short as 30 s was obtained for the elaborated fluorescent probe. Meanwhile, the bright red emission of porphyrin units in PCN-224 could be proportionally quenched in correlation with the applied TNT level through the formation of TNT-TCPP complex in the ground state. The specificity of the employed sensory platform for TNT recognition was scarcely affected by other possible coexistent interfering species. Furthermore, this fluorescent PCN-224 probe presented a much higher quenching efficiency for TNT than other structurally similar nitroaromatic compounds and was successfully applied for the quantitative detection of TNT in the mixed nitroaromatic explosive samples. This prefigured their great potentials of practical TNT detection in water media for public safety and security.

Abstract
Highly fluorescent g-C3N4 nanosheets were facilely fabricated by exfoliating bulk g-C3N4 under ultrasonic irradiation for 1 h. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) image shows that the resultant g-C3N4 nanosheets are ∼6-14 nm thick, and the suspension is stable in air for several weeks. Remarkably, the obtained nanosheets exhibited strong fluorescence with an extremely high quantum yield (QY) up to 32%, and high sensitivity, selectivity, as well as a fast response to nitro aromatic explosives were observed. Typically, the quenching efficiency coefficient Ksv for PNP was 30,460 M(-1), which proved that the resultant nanosheets possessed an extremely high sensitivity for nitro-phenol PNP detection.
