Ag-Catalyzed Multicomponent Synthesis of Heterocyclic Compounds: A Review

The investigation of the procedures for the multi-component synthesis of heterocycles has attracted the interest of organic and medicinal chemists. The use of heterogeneous catalysts, especially transition metal catalysts in organic synthesis, can provide a new, improved alternative to traditional methods in modern synthetic chemistry. The main focus is on the utilization of silver as a catalyst for the multi-component synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. The present review describes some important reported studies for the period of 2010 to 2020. Conclusion: The present review addresses some of the important reported studies on multi-component synthesis of heterocycles in the period of 2010-2020. These approaches were performed under classical and nonclassical conditions, using Ag salts, Ag NPs, Ag on the support, Ag as co-catalysts with other transition metals, ionic liquids, acidic or basic materials. Most of the reported reactions were performed under solvent-free conditions or in green solvents and the utilized catalysts were mostly recyclable. The main aim of the present review is to provide the organic chemists with the most appropriate procedures in the multi-component synthesis of desired heterocycles using silver catalysts.

Configuration Sampling With Five-Membered Atropisomeric P,N-Ligands

Here we report a strategy for the systematic variation of atropisomeric C₁ -symmetric P,N ligands to incrementally change the position of the groups within the chiral pocket without modifying their steric parameters. More specifically, the effects of systematic modification of the nitrogen heterocycle in atropisomeric C₁ -symmetric stack ligands have been investigated in this study. The versatility and applicability of this approach has been demonstrated in mechanistically distinct catalytic enantioselective transformations, resulting in the identification of a P,N-ligand for a highly enantioselective synthesis of organoboranes.

New-Generation Ligand Design for the Gold-Catalyzed Asymmetric Activation of Alkynes

Gold(I) catalysts are ideal for the activation of alkynes under very mild conditions. However, unlike allenes or alkenes, the triple bond of alkynes cannot be prochiral. In addition, the linear coordination displayed by gold(I) complexes places the chiral ligand far away from the substrate resulting in an inefficient transfer of chiral information. This poses a significant challenge for the achievement of high enantiocontrol in gold(I)-catalyzed reactions of alkynes. Although considerable progress on enantioselective gold(I)-catalyzed transformations has recently been achieved, the asymmetric activation of non-prochiral alkyne-containing small molecules still represents a great challenge. Herein we summarize recent advances in intra- and intermolecular enantioselective gold(I)-catalyzed reactions involving alkynes, discussing new chiral ligand designs that lie at the basis of these developments. We also focus on the mode of action of these catalysts, their possible limitations towards a next-generation of more efficient ligand designs. Finally, square planar chiral gold(III) complexes, which offer an alternative to chiral gold(I) complexes, are also discussed.

Nickel Complexes in C‒P Bond Formation

This review is a comprehensive account of reactions with the participation of nickel complexes that result in the formation of carbon-phosphorus (C‒P) bonds. The catalytic and non-catalytic reactions with the participation of nickel complexes as the catalysts and the reagents are described. The various classes of starting compounds and the products formed are discussed individually. The several putative mechanisms of the nickel catalysed reactions are also included, thereby providing insights into both the synthetic and the mechanistic aspects of this phosphorus chemistry.

Atropo-Enantioselective Oxidation-Enabled Iridium(III)-Catalyzed C-H Arylations with Aryl Boronic Esters

Atropo-enantioselective biaryl coupling through C-H bond functionalization is an emerging technology allowing direct construction of axially chiral molecules. This approach is largely limited to electrophilic coupling partners. We report a highly atropo-enantioselective C-H arylation of tetralone derivatives paired with aryl boronic esters as nucleophilic components. The transformation is catalyzed by chiral cyclopentadienyl (Cpx ) iridium(III) complexes and enabled by oxidatively enhanced reductive elimination from high-valent cyclometalated Ir-species.

Towards Data-driven Design of Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Olefins: Database and Hierarchical Learning

Asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins is one of the most powerful asymmetric transformations in molecular synthesis. Although several privileged catalyst scaffolds are available, the catalyst development for asymmetric hydrogenation is still a time- and resource-consuming process due to the lack of predictive catalyst design strategy. Targeting the data-driven design of asymmetric catalysis, we herein report the development of a standardized database that contains the detailed information of over 12000 literature asymmetric hydrogenations of olefins. This database provides a valuable platform for the machine learning applications in asymmetric catalysis. Based on this database, we developed a hierarchical learning approach to achieve predictive machine leaning model using only dozens of enantioselectivity data with the target olefin, which offers a useful solution for the few-shot learning problem and will facilitate the reaction optimization with new olefin substrate in catalysis screening.

SPHENOL, A New Chiral Framework for Asymmetric Synthesis

Privileged chiral catalysts have found tremendous applications and thus immensely advanced asymmetric synthesis in the past few decades. However, truly privileged chiral frameworks are still extremely limited. Thus, the search for and development of new versatile members remain in high demand but challenging. Herein we report the design, synthesis, and application of a new chiral framework, SPHENOL, which features combined advantages of BINOL and SPINOL. This unique feature enables SPHENOL to serve as a new platform for the development of chiral ligands and catalysts. Its superior performance has been demonstrated in mechanistically unrelated reactions, including asymmetric hydrogenation, hydroacylation, and spirocyclization for the practical asymmetric synthesis of SPHENOL itself. These results indicated the great potential of SPHENOL as a useful chiral framework.

Synthesis of homochiral sulfanyl- and sulfoxide-substituted naphthyltriazoles and study of the conformational stability

The preparation of a series of novel homochiral atropisomeric sulfanyl- and sulfoxide-substituted naphthyltriazoles is described. The triazolization methodology used presents a new way towards novel and highly stable 1,2,3-triazole-based atropisomers, and introduces a new and complementary synthetic pathway towards 4-sulfanyl substituted 1,2,3-triazoles. Starting from sulfanyl-substituted naphthyl ketones, enantiopure amines, and 4-nitrophenyl azide, a collection of 16 sulfanyl-substituted naphthyltriazoles were obtained via the triazolization reaction in which the homochiral diastereomers are readily isolated. Subsequent monooxidation results in the preparation of several sulfoxide-substituted naphthyltriazoles. The absolute configuration of a set of diastereomeric sulfanyl- and sulfoxide-appended naphthyltriazoles was deduced via X-ray crystallography. Furthermore, the conformational stability of the atropisomers was determined experimentally, and further confirmed and analyzed with the aid of computational DFT calculations.

Palladium-Catalyzed Desymmetric Intermolecular C-N Coupling Enabled by a Chiral Monophosphine Ligand Derived from Anthracene Photodimer

The development of chiral ligands with privileged scaffolds plays an important role in transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions. Herein we present anthracene-photodimer-derived chiral monophosphine ligand 1, which features dual chirality and a rigid scaffold. This ligand exhibits remarkable efficiency in Pd-catalyzed desymmetric intermolecular C-N coupling under mild conditions with excellent chemo- and enantioselectivity.

Advances in Chiral Metal-Organic and Covalent Organic Frameworks for Asymmetric Catalysis

Asymmetric catalysis is of crucial importance owing to the huge and rising demand for optically pure substances. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as two emerging crystalline porous materials, have presented great promising applications for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. The unique properties, such as, highly regular porous structures, prominent structural tunability, and well-ordered catalytic sites, render chiral MOFs (CMOFs) and chiral COFs (CCOFs) highly active and enantioselective for a large number of asymmetric catalytic organic transformations. Furthermore, they provide a useful platform for facile mechanistic understanding and catalyst design. This review provides an overview of the advancements in CMOFs and CCOFs for asymmetric catalysis. The designs, syntheses and structures of these crystalline porous materials, and their asymmetric catalytic performance are described. And the perspectives on challenges and opportunities in development of CMOFs and CCOFs are discussed. It is anticipated that this review will shed light on the heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis with CMOFs and CCOFs and motivate further research in this promising field.

Investigation of Taniaphos as a chiral selector in chiral extraction of amino acid enantiomers

Finding chiral selector with high stereoselectivity to a variety of amino acid enantiomers remains a challenge and warrants further research. In this work, Taniaphos, a chiral ligand with rotatable spatial configuration, was employed as a chiral extractant to enantioseparate various amino acid enantiomers. Phenylalanine (Phe), homophenylalanine (Hphe), 4-nitrophenylalanine (Nphe), and 3-chloro-phenylglycine (Cpheg) were used as substrates to evaluate the extraction efficiency. The results revealed that Taniaphos-Cu exhibited good abilities to enantioseparate Phe, Hphe, Nphe, and Cpheg with the highest separation factors (α) of 3.13, 2.10, 2.32, and 2.14, respectively. Taniaphos-Cu is more conducive to combine with D-amino acid in extraction. The influences of pH, Taniaphos-Cu, and concentration and extraction temperature on extraction were comprehensively evaluated. The highest performance factors (pf) for Phe, Hphe, Nphe, and Cpheg at optimal extraction conditions were 0.08892, 0.1250, 0.09621, and 0.08021, respectively. The recognition mechanism between Taniaphos-Cu and amino acid enantiomers was discussed. The coordination interaction between Taniaphos-Cu and COO- , π-π interaction between Taniaphos-Cu and amino acid enantiomers are important acting forces in chiral extraction. The steric-hindrance between NH2 and OH lead to Taniaphos-Cu-D-Phe is more stable than Taniaphos-Cu-L-Phe. This work provided a chiral extractant that has good abilities to enantioseparate various amino acid enantiomers.

Nickel-Catalyzed Ring-Opening C-O Functionalization of peri-Xanthenoxanthenes for 8-Substituted Binaphthol Synthesis

Herein, we disclose the Ni-catalyzed ring-opening C-O functionalization of peri-xanthenoxanthenes using Grignard reagents that forms 8-monofunctionalized binaphthols. 1,2-Bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane was the best ligand for alkylations and ICy for arylation. After mechanistic investigations, we assumed that the reaction proceeds via C-O reduction and subsequent C-O functionalization. To verify the mechanism, the intermediate after reduction was isolated. Moreover, the asymmetric addition, using 8-octylbinaphthol after optical resolution, was studied.

Backbone-Modified C2-Symmetrical Chiral Bisphosphine TMS-QuinoxP*: Asymmetric Borylation of Racemic Allyl Electrophiles

A new C₂-symmetrical P-chirogenic bisphosphine ligand with silyl substituents on the ligand backbone, (R,R)-5,8-TMS-QuinoxP*, has been developed. This ligand showed higher reactivity and enantioselectivity for the direct enantioconvergent borylation of cyclic allyl electrophiles than its parent ligand, (R,R)-QuinoxP* (e.g., for a piperidine-type substrate: 95% ee vs 76% ee). The borylative kinetic resolution of linear allyl electrophiles was also achieved using (R,R)-5,8-TMS-QuinoxP* (up to 90% ee, s = 46.4). An investigation into the role of the silyl groups on the ligand backbone using X-ray crystallography and computational studies displayed interlocking structures between the phosphine and silyl moieties of (R,R)-5,8-TMS-QuinoxP*. The results of DFT calculations revealed that the entropy effect thermodynamically destabilizes the dormant dimer species in the catalytic cycle to improve the reactivity. Furthermore, in the direct enantioconvergent case, detailed calculations indicated a pronounced enantioselective recognition of carbon-carbon double bonds, which is virtually unaffected by the chirality at the allylic position, as a key for the borylation from both enantiomers of racemic allyl electrophiles.

The chemistry of phosphines in constrained, well-defined microenvironments

Developments in the confinement of phosphines within micro- or nano-environments are explored. Phosphines are ubiquitous across metal coordination chemistry and underpin some of the most famous homogeneous transition metal catalysts. Constraining phosphines within confined environments influences not only their behaviour but also that of their metal complexes. Notable examples include the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or metal-organic cages (MOCs) to support phosphines which demonstrate how the microenvironment within such constructs leads to reactivity modification. The development of phosphine confinement is explored and parallels are drawn with related constrained macrocyclic systems and mechanically interlocked molecules. The review concludes by identifying areas that remain a challenge and those that will provide new avenues for research.

Combined Dynamic Kinetic Resolution and C-H Functionalization for Facile Synthesis of Non-Biaryl-Atropisomer-Type Axially Chiral Organosilanes

Although asymmetric C-H functionalization has been available for the synthesis of structurally diverse molecules, catalytic dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) approaches to change racemic stereogenic axes remain synthetic challenges in this field. Here, a concise palladium-catalyzed DKR was combined with C-H functionalization involving olefination and alkynylation for the highly efficient synthesis of non-biaryl-atropisomer-type (NBA) axially chiral oragnosilanes. The chemistry proceeded through two different and distinct DKR: first, an atroposelective C-H olefination or alkynylation produced axially chiral vinylsilanes or alkynylsilanes as a new family of non-biaryl atropisomers (NBA), and second, the extension of this DKR strategy to twofold o,o'-C-H functionalization led to the multifunctional axially chiral organosilicon compounds with up to >99 % ee.

Enantioselective Synthesis of 3,3'-Disubstituted 2-Amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyls by Copper-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative Cross-Coupling

A challenging direct asymmetric catalytic aerobic oxidative cross-coupling of 2-naphthylamine and 2-naphthol, using a novel Cu^I /SPDO system, has been successfully developed for the first time. Enantioenriched 3,3'-disubstituted NOBINs were achieved and could be readily derived to divergent chiral ligands and catalysts. This reaction features high enantioselectivities (up to 96 % ee) and good yields (up to 80 %). The DFT calculations suggest that the F-H interactions between CF₃ of L17 and H-1,8 of 2-naphthol, and the π-π stacking between the two coupling partners could play vital roles in the enantiocontrol of this cross-coupling reaction.

The Discovery of Multifunctional Chiral P Ligands for the Catalytic Construction of Quaternary Carbon/Silicon and Multiple Stereogenic Centers

The development of highly effective chiral ligands is a key topic in enhancing the catalytic activity and selectivity in metal-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis. Traditionally, the difficulty of ligand synthesis, insufficient accuracy in controlling the stereoselectivity, and poor universality of the systems often become obstacles in this field. Using the concept of nonequivalent coordination to the metal, our group has designed and synthesized a series of new chiral catalysts to access various carbon/silicon and/or multiple stereogenic centers containing products with excellent chemo-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity.In this Account, we summarize a series of new phosphine ligands with multiple stereogenic centers that have been developed in our laboratory. These ligands exhibited good to excellent performance in the transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective construction of quaternary carbon/silicon and multiple stereogenic centers. In the first section, notable examples of the design and synthesis of new chiral ligands by non-covalent interaction-based multisite activation are described. The integrations of axial chirality, atom-centered chirality, and chiral anions and multifunctional groups into a single scaffold are individually highlighted, as represented by Ar-BINMOLs and their derivative ligands, HZNU-Phos, Fei-Phos, and Xing-Phos. In the second, third, and fourth sections, the enantioselective construction of quaternary carbon stereocenters, multiple stereogenic centers, and silicon stereogenic centers using our newly developed chiral ligands is summarized. These sections refer to detailed reaction information in the chiral-ligand-controlled asymmetric catalysis based on the concept of nonequivalent coordination with multisite activation. Accordingly, a wide array of transition metal and main-group metal catalysts has been applied to the enantioselective synthesis of chiral heterocycles, amino acid derivatives, cyclic ketones, alkenes, and organosilicon compounds bearing one to five stereocenters.This Account shows that this new model of multifunctional ligand-controlled catalysts exhibits excellent stereocontrol and catalytic efficiency, especially in a stereodivergent and atom-economical fashion. Furthermore, a brief mechanistic understanding of the origin of enantioselectivity from our newly developed chiral catalyst systems could inspire further development of new ligands and enhancement of enantioselective synthesis by asymmetric metal catalysis.

Synthesis of Axially Chiral 2,2'-Bisphosphobiarenes via a Nickel-Catalyzed Asymmetric Ullmann Coupling: General Access to Privileged Chiral Ligands without Optical Resolution

We report an asymmetric homocoupling of ortho-(iodo)arylphosphine oxides and ortho-(iodo)arylphosphonates resulting in highly enantioenriched axially chiral bisphosphine oxides and bisphosphonates. These products are readily converted to enantioenriched biaryl bisphosphines without need for chiral auxiliaries or optical resolution. This provides a practical route for the development of previously uninvestigated atroposelective biaryl bisphosphine ligands. The conditions have also proven effective for asymmetric dimerization of other, non-phosphorus-containing aryl halides.

Construction of Partially Protected Nonsymmetrical Biaryldiols via Semipinacol Rearrangement of o-NQM Derived from Enynones

The construction of partially protected nonsymmetrical biaryldiols catalyzed by AgBF₄ has been achieved. The approach facilitates the formation of two new aryl rings and the introduction of two hydroxyl groups (one free and one TBS-protected) via the o-NQM generation/semipinacol rearrangement cascade, featuring high atom- and step-economy to afford a diverse array of partially protected nonsymmetrical biaryldiols under mild conditions.

Recent progress on the construction of axial chirality through transition-metal-catalyzed benzannulation

Useful chiral biaryls have been constructed through rhodium and gold complex-catalyzed asymmetric benzannulation strategies.

Metal-free synthesis of biarenes via photoextrusion in di(tri)aryl phosphates

A metal-free route for the synthesis of biarenes has been developed. The approach is based on the photoextrusion of a phosphate moiety occurring upon irradiation of biaryl- and triaryl phosphates. The reaction involves an exciplex as the intermediate and it is especially suitable for the preparation of electron-rich biarenes.

Binaphthyl-based chiral ligands: design, synthesis and evaluation of their performance in enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aromatic aldehydes

The design strategy and the performance of binaphthyl-based chiral ligands were evaluated with computation and enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aromatic aldehydes. Under optimized conditions, enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aromatic aldehydes provided the desired optically active secondary alcohols in high isolated yields (up to 91%) and excellent enantiomeric excesses (up to 98% ee).

Synthesis of Axially Chiral Olefin-Oxazoline Ligands via Pd-Catalyzed Multiple C-H Functionalization

We report herein the Pd-catalyzed oxazoline-directed C-H olefination of the N-arylindole skeleton, affording two diastereomers of axially chiral olefin-oxazoline ligands in a one-step procedure. Modifications at the 3- and 3'-positions were facilely achieved via electrophilic substitution of the indole fragment and subsequent oxazoline-directed C-H amidation or olefination of the arene fragment.

Study and modular synthesis of unsymmetrical bis(phosphino)pyrrole ligands

We report the facile and modular synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,2-bis(phosphino)pyrrole ligands and their coordination chemistry. These ligands offer a promising alternative to their 1,2-bis(phosphino)benzene congeners, retaining a similar steric profile with attenuated electron donation. Proof-of-principle application of a bis(phosphino)pyrrole ligand in a nickel-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling reaction under mild conditions is demonstrated.

Synthesis of Concave and Vaulted 2H-Pyran-Fused BINOLs and Corresponding [5] and [7]-Oxa-helicenoids: Regioselective Cascade-Concerted Route and DFT Studies

Synthesis of concave and vaulted 2H-pyran-fused BINOLs has been achieved. A regioselective, path-breaking concerted cascade route allows the placement of six-membered heteroaromatic rings at the sterically crowded 7,8 and 7',8' positions of BINOL. DFT studies with relative energetics that support the kinetically controlled reaction pathway are preferred, matching the experimental results. The new BINOLs exhibit smaller dihedral angle than BINOL on the diol part; this structural feature can be an assisting factor for better ligation with metals in the metal-catalyzed reactions. Corresponding C₂ symmetric [5] and [7]-oxa-helicenoids have an overlapping, sterically crowded geometry.

Rapid Synthesis of Alkenylated BINOL Derivatives via Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Bond Activation

Modification of BINOL units has been well examined via Rh-catalyzed C-H activation and functionalization reactions by using ester carbonyls as directing groups and alkenes as coupling partners. The one-pot strategy was an efficient protocol for the rapid synthesis of BINOL derivatives with retention of optical purity.

Atroposelective Synthesis of Axially Chiral 3-Arylindoles by Copper-Catalyzed Asymmetric Cross-Coupling of Indoles with Quinones and Naphthoquinones

A copper-catalyzed direct asymmetric coupling of C2 sterically-hindering-group-substituted indoles with quinone and naphthoquinone esters was developed by using the spirocyclic pyrrolidine oxazoline (SPDO) ligand, which was accomplished by metal catalysis for the first time. Diverse structures of axially chiral 3-arylindoles were obtained with good to high enantioselectivities in good to high yields. This protocol can be expanded to implement β-coupling with naphthoquinone esters, providing an alternative way to prepare β-substituted derivatives of both naphthols and naphthoquinones.

Tailored Palladium Catalysts for Selective Synthesis of Conjugated Enynes by Monocarbonylation of 1,3-Diynes

For the first time, the monoalkoxycarbonylation of easily available 1,3-diynes to give synthetically useful conjugated enynes has been realized. Key to success was the design and utilization of the new ligand 2,2'-bis(tert-butyl(pyridin-2-yl)phosphanyl)-1,1'-binaphthalene (Neolephos), which permits the palladium-catalyzed selective carbonylation under mild conditions, providing a general preparation of functionalized 1,3-enynes in good-to-high yields with excellent chemoselectivities. Synthetic applications that showcase the possibilities of this novel methodology include an efficient one-pot synthesis of 4-aryl-4H-pyrans as well as the rapid construction of various heterocyclic, bicyclic, and polycyclic compounds.

The C-H Activation/Bidirecting Group Strategy for Selective Direct Synthesis of Diverse 1,1'-Biisoquinolines

Multidentate ligands are highly important but difficult to access. Herein we disclose an atom- and step-economic synthesis of highly substituted 1,1'-biisoquinolines by a C-H activation/bididirecting group strategy. Through rational design of a bididirecting group to "N-OH + N-OAc", selective unsymmetrical diannulation with two different alkynes in a one-pot reaction has been achieved for the first time to access unsymmetrical biisoquinolines. Moreover, the resultant biisoquinolines show tunable photoluminescence and serve as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) systems.

Diastereoselective Synthesis of P-Chirogenic and Atropisomeric 2,2'-Bisphosphino-1,1'-binaphthyls Enabled by Internal Phosphine Oxide Directing Groups

Diphosphine ligands that merge both axial and P-centered chirality may exhibit superior or unique properties. Herein we report the diastereoselective introduction of P-centered chirality at the 2-position of the axially chiral 2'-(phosphine oxide)-1,1'-binaphthyl scaffold. A lithium-bromide exchange reaction of a 2-bromo-2'-(phosphine oxide)-1,1'-binaphthyl and treatment with dichlorophosphines followed by a nucleophilic organometallic reagent afforded unsymmetrical 2-phosphino-2'-(phosphine oxide)-1,1'-binaphthyls with binaphthyl axial chirality and one or two phosphorus stereocenters with a variety of P substituents. The final diastereomerically pure 2,2'-bisphosphino-1,1'-binaphthyls were obtained by reduction of the phosphine oxide directing group. Preliminary results demonstrated that a ligand with this hybrid chirality could induce higher stereoselectivity in the metal-complex-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of a dialkyl ketone.

Organocatalytic Enantioselective Synthesis of Atropisomeric Aryl-p-Quinones: Platform Molecules for Diversity-Oriented Synthesis of Biaryldiols

Presented here is a class of novel axially chiral aryl-p-quinones as platform molecules for the preparation of non-C₂ symmetric biaryldiols. Two sets of aryl-p-quinone frameworks were synthesized with remarkable enantiocontrol by means of chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed enantioselective arylation of p-quinones by central-to-axial chirality conversion. These aryl-p-quinones were then used to access a wide spectrum of highly functionalized non-C₂ symmetric biaryldiols with excellent retention of the enantiopurity.

Michael Reaction Inspired Atroposelective Construction of Axially Chiral Biaryls

The first copper-catalyzed atroposelective Michael-type addition between azonaphthalenes and arylboronic acids for the construction of biaryl atropisomers was established using a novel BINOL-derived phosphoramidite as a chiral ligand. A broad range of atropisomeric biaryls were obtained with good efficiency, and the practicality of this approach was verified by versatile transformations toward axially chiral ligands, catalysts, and other functional atropisomers. This set of catalytic systems successfully inhibited the routine 1,2-addition and promoted the formation of an aryl-aryl chiral axis. Meanwhile, this strategy bypassed the use of an oxidant as well as the harsh conditions normally necessary for transition-metal-mediated arene C-H coupling with arylboronic acids as an arylation counterpart, offering a straightforward alternative to access optically active biaryls.

Enantioselective Iron/Bisquinolyldiamine Ligand-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling Reaction of 2-Naphthols

An iron-catalyzed asymmetric oxidative homo-coupling of 2-naphthols for the synthesis of 1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) derivatives is reported. The coupling reaction provides enantioenriched BINOLs in good yields (up to 99%) and moderate enantioselectivities (up to 81:19 er) using an iron-complex generated in situ from Fe(ClO4)2 and a bisquinolyldiamine ligand [(1R,2R)-N1,N2-di(quinolin-8-yl)cyclohexane-1,2-diamine, L1]. A number of ligands (L2-L8) and the analogs of L1, with various substituents and chiral backbones, were synthesized and examined in the oxidative coupling reactions.
