Carbonylation of ethene catalysed by Pd(II)-phosphine complexes

This review deals with olefin carbonylation catalysed by Pd(II)-phosphine complexes in protic solvents. In particular, the results obtained in the carbonylation with ethene are reviewed. After a short description of the basic concepts relevant to this catalysis, the review treats in greater details the influence of the bite angle, skeletal rigidity, electronic and steric bulk properties of the ligand on the formation of the products, which range from high molecular weight perfectly alternating polyketones to methyl propanoate. It is shown that the steric bulk plays a major role in directing the selectivity. Particular emphasis is given to the factors governing the very active and selective catalysis to methyl propanoate, including the mechanism of the catalytic cycles with diphosphine- and monophosphine-catalysts. A brief note on the synthesis of methyl propanoate using a “Lucite” type catalyst in ionic liquids is also illustrated. A chapter is dedicated to the carbonylation of olefins in aqueous reaction media. The nonalternating CO-ethene copolymerization is also treated.

Phosphinate chemistry in the 21st century: a viable alternative to the use of phosphorus trichloride in organophosphorus synthesis

Organophosphorus compounds are important in everyday applications ranging from agriculture to medicine and are used in flame retardants and other materials. Although organophosphorus chemistry is known as a mature and specialized area, researchers would like to develop new methods for synthesizing organophosphorus compounds to improve the safety and sustainability of these chemical processes. The vast majority of compounds that contain a phosphorus-carbon bond are manufactured using phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) as an intermediate. However, these reactions require chlorine, and researchers would like to avoid the use of PCl3 and develop safer chemistry that also decreases energy consumption and minimizes waste. Researchers have already proposed and discussed two primary strategies based on elemental phosphorus (P4 or Pred) or on phosphine (PH3) as alternatives to PCl3. However, phosphinates, an important class of phosphorus compounds defined as any compound with a phosphorus atom attached to two oxygens, R(1)R(2)P(O)(OR) (R(1)/R(2) = hydrogen/carbon), offer another option. This Account discusses the previously neglected potential of these phosphinates as replacements of PCl3 for the preparation of organophosphorus compounds. Because of their strong reductive properties, industry currently uses the simplest members of this class of compounds, hypophosphites, for one major application: electroless plating. In comparison with other proposed PCl3 surrogates, hypophosphorous derivatives can offer improved stability, lower toxicity, higher solubility, and increased atom economy. When their reducing power is harnessed to form phosphorus-carbon or phosphorus-oxygen bonds, these compounds are also rich and versatile precursors to organophosphorus compounds. This Account examines the use of transition metal-catalyzed reactions such as cross-coupling and hydrophosphinylation for phosphorus-carbon bond formation. Because the most important industrial organophosphorus compounds include compounds triply or quadruply bound to oxygen, I also discuss controlled transfer hydrogenation for phosphorus-oxygen bond formation. I hope that this Account will further promote research in this novel and exciting yet much underdeveloped area of phosphinate activation.

Ion exchange of protons by coinage metals to give gold and silver encapsulation within a pseudo-D2d distorted face-capped Pd14 cubic kernel: [(μ14-M)Pd22(CO)20(PEt3)8]+ (M = Au, Ag)

Heart of gold (or silver): The pseudo-D2d distorted MPd14 cubic kernel of [(μ14-M)Pd22(CO)20(PEt3)8](+) cations, with M = Au (1), Ag (2), has an encapsulated M atom (see picture; yellow) coordinated to eight cubic corner (black) and six face-capping Pd atoms (gray). Compounds 1 and 2 were obtained (28-60 % yields) from two-step/one-pot reactions of a Pd10 precursor with CF3CO2 H followed by coinage-metal ion exchange of protons.

Oxidative Heck vinylation for the synthesis of complex dienes and polyenes

We introduce an oxidative Heck reaction for selective complex diene and polyene formation. The reaction proceeds via oxidative Pd(II)/sulfoxide catalysis that retards palladium-hydride isomerizations which previously limited the Heck manifold's capacity for furnishing stereodefined conjugated dienes. Limiting quantities of nonactivated terminal olefins (1 equiv) and slight excesses of vinyl boronic esters (1.5 equiv) that feature diverse functionality can be used to furnish complex dienes and polyenes in good yields and excellent selectivities (generally E:Z = >20:1; internal:terminal = >20:1). Because this reaction only requires prior activation of a single vinylic carbon, improvements in efficiency are observed for synthetic sequences relative to ones featuring reactions that require activation of both coupling partners.

Reaction of O2 with [(-)-sparteine]Pd(H)Cl: evidence for an intramolecular [H-L]+ "reductive elimination" pathway

(Sp)PdCl(2) [Sp = (-)-sparteine] catalyzes a number of different aerobic oxidation reactions, and reaction of O(2) with a Pd(II)-hydride intermediate, (Sp)Pd(H)Cl (1), is a key step in the proposed catalytic mechanism. Previous computational studies suggest that O(2) inserts into the Pd(II)-H bond, initiated by abstraction of the hydrogen atom by O(2). Experimental and computational results obtained in the present study challenge this conclusion. Oxygenation of in-situ-generated (Sp)Pd(H)Cl exhibits a zero-order dependence on [O(2)]. This result is inconsistent with a bimolecular H-atom-abstraction pathway, and DFT computational studies identify a novel "reductive elimination" mechanism, in which the chelating nitrogen ligand undergoes intramolecular deprotonation of the Pd(II)-hydride. The relevance of this mechanism to other Pd(II) oxidation catalysts with chelating nitrogen ligands is evaluated.

5-Ethynyl-1-β-D-ribofuranosyl-1H-[1,2,3]triazole-4-carboxylic acid amide (ETCAR) and its analogues: synthesis and cytotoxic properties

Efficient Pd(0)-catalysed synthesis of 5-alkynyl-1-β-D-ribofuranosyl-1H-[1,2,3]triazole-4-carboxylic acid amide depends on the presence of different protecting groups of the ribose moiety. Peracetylated 5-iodo substrate (15) couples with terminal alkynes or trimethyl-[(tributylstannyl)ethynyl]silane in 50-71% and 72% yield (ETCAR), respectively, although its hydrodehalogenation to 19 is noticeable. On the other hand, hydrodehalogenation of acetonide (16) predominates over coupling with terminal alkyne and slightly decreases a yield of cross-coupling reaction with trimethyl[(tributylstannyl)ethynyl]silane. Alternative conditions of reaction with terminal alkynes, to exclude so far identified hydride sources to produce hydridopalladium species, have been established for acetonide 16 and allowed to achieve 72% of coupling. Fluoromethyl derivative (42) was prepared from its 5-hydroxymethyl precursor by fluorination with DAST. Additionally, X-ray structural analysis of 42 was performed. All 1,2,3-triazolonucleosides and two synthesized cycloSal-pronucleotides were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against K562, HeLa and HUVEC cells.

Cross-coupling reaction of alcohols for carbon-carbon bond formation using pincer-type NHC/palladium catalysts

A cross-coupling reaction of different alcohols was achieved using a pincer-type NHC/PdBr complex as the catalyst precursor, and the reaction, under either Ar or H(2) gas, displayed a broad substrate scope with respect to both primary and secondary alcohol components, with high alcohol product selectivity.

Resting state and elementary steps of the coupling of aryl halides with thiols catalyzed by alkylbisphosphine complexes of palladium

Detailed mechanistic studies on the coupling of aryl halides with thiols catalyzed by palladium complexes of the alkylbisphosphine ligand CyPF-(t)Bu (1-dicyclohexylphosphino-2-di-tert-butylphosphinoethylferrocene) are reported. The elementary steps that constitute the catalytic cycle, i.e. oxidative addition, transmetalation and reductive elimination, have been studied, and their relative rates are reported. Each of the steps of the catalytic process occurs at temperatures that are much lower than those required for the reactions catalyzed by a combination of palladium precursors and CyPF-(t)Bu. To explain these differences in rates between the catalytic and stoichiometric reactions, studies were conducted to identify the resting state of the catalyst of the reactions catalyzed by a combination of Pd(OAc)(2) and CyPF-(t)Bu, a combination of Pd(dba)(2) and CyPF-(t)Bu, or the likely intermediate Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(Ar)(Br). These data show that the major palladium complex in each case lies off of the catalytic cycle. The resting state of the reactions catalyzed by Pd(OAc)(2) and CyPF-(t)Bu was the palladium bis-thiolate complex [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(SR)(2)] (R = alkyl or aryl). The resting state in reactions catalyzed by Pd(2)(dba)(3) and CyPF-(t)Bu was the binuclear complex [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)](2)(mu(2),eta(2)-dba) (9). The resting states of reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic thiols catalyzed by [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(p-tolyl)(Br)] (3a) were the hydridopalladium thiolate complexes [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(H)(SR)] (R= alkyl and aryl). All these palladium species have been prepared independently, and the mechanisms by which they enter the catalytic cycle have been examined in detail. These features of the reaction catalyzed by palladium and CyPF-(t)Bu have been compared with those of reactions catalyzed by the alkylbisphosphine DiPPF and Pd(OAc)(2) or Pd(dba)(2). Our data indicate that the resting states of these reactions are similar to each other and that our mechanistic conclusions about reactions catalyzed by palladium and CyPF-(t)Bu can be extrapolated to reactions catalyzed by complexes of other electron-rich bisphosphines.

A new approach to carbon-carbon bond formation: Development of aerobic Pd-catalyzed reductive coupling reactions of organometallic reagents and styrenes

Alkenes are attractive starting materials for organic synthesis and the development of new selective functionalization reactions are desired. Previously, our laboratory discovered a unique Pd-catalyzed hydroalkoxylation reaction of styrenes containing a phenol. Based upon deuterium labeling experiments, a mechanism involving an aerobic alcohol oxidation coupled to alkene functionalization was proposed. These results inspired the development of a new Pd-catalyzed reductive coupling reaction of alkenes and organometallic reagents that generates a new carbon-carbon bond. Optimization of the conditions for the coupling of both organostannanes and organoboronic esters is described and the initial scope of the transformation is presented. Additionally, several mechanistic experiments are outlined and support the rationale for the development of the reaction based upon coupling alcohol oxidation to alkene functionalization.

Synthesis of styrenes by palladium(II)-catalyzed vinylation of arylboronic acids and aryltrifluoroborates by using vinyl acetate

One Heck of a reaction: Treatment of arylboronic acids or aryltrifluoroborates with vinyl acetate by using a palladium(II) catalyst gives the corresponding styrenes (see scheme). No palladium reoxidant is needed and the vinylation is performed under non-inert conditionsReactions of aromatic and heteroaromatic boronic acids or aryltrifluoroborate salts with vinyl acetate in the presence of a palladium(II) catalyst give the corresponding styrenes in good yields. This Heck reaction proceeds with microwave heating in less than 30 min at 140 degrees C in the absence of base and tolerates a variety of substituents. No palladium reoxidant is needed and the vinylation is performed under non-inert conditions. Mass spectrometry (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS)) was used to identify cationic palladium-containing complexes in ongoing reactions. The key intermediates that have been detected, together with experiments that used deuterated vinyl acetate, support the existence of catalytically active palladium hydride species, and that it is the arylation of ethylene, not vinyl acetate, which generates the styrene product. The mechanism of the reaction is discussed in terms of the palladium(II) intermediates mentioned above.
