Abstract
The facile insertion of CO2 into iridium(I) hydroxide, alkoxide, and amide bonds was recently reported. In particular, [Ir(cod)(IiPr)(OH)] (IiPr = 1,3-bis(isopropyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) reacted with CO2 in solution and in the solid state in a matter of minutes to give the novel [{Ir(cod)(IiPr)}2(μ-κ(1)O:κ(2)O,O-CO3)] complex. In the present study, this reaction is probed using kinetics and theoretical studies, which enabled us to analyse its facile nature and to fully elucidate the reaction mechanism with excellent correlation between the two methods.

Abstract
(CH2F2)2 and (SO2)2 are investigated using DFT-D3 computations, and experimental dissociation energies are determined by TDL-IR spectroscopy. DFT-D3 dramatically improves over uncorrected DFT.

Abstract
Computational spectroscopy has recently evolved from a field reserved for specialists toward a general tool allowing interpretations and analyses of experimental results. However, the current practice of providing tables of transitions for rigid geometries, possibly tuned by phenomenological broadening, is by far too naive. In order to improve this situation in the last few years we have been developing a general, robust, and user-friendly virtual spectrometer (VS) able to complement experimental studies for complex systems in condensed phases. The VS is based on flexible graphical pre- and postprocessing tools interfaced with general number-crunching software. This last tool is rooted in several electronic structure methodologies (DFT, TD-DFT, post-Hartree-Fock), powerful discrete/continuum models for describing environmental effects, and general vibrational and vibronic models. These last topics are the main focus of this work, which sketches our latest developments related to effective inclusion of anharmonic contributions, together with time-independent and/or time-dependent descriptions of vibronic transitions including Franck-Condon, Herzberg-Teller, and Duschinsky effects. Some test cases are described in some detail with the aim of showing the role of different effects in ruling vibrational (VCD) and electronic (ECD, CPL) chiral spectroscopies.

Abstract
Protein-surface interactions are of fundamental importance for a broad range of applications in the fields of biomaterials and biotechnology. Present experimental methods are limited in their ability to provide a comprehensive depiction of these interactions at the atomistic level. In contrast, empirical force field based simulation methods inherently provide the ability to predict and visualize protein-surface interactions with full atomistic detail. These methods, however, must be carefully developed, validated, and properly applied before confidence can be placed in results from the simulations. In this perspectives paper, I provide an overview of the critical aspects that I consider being of greatest importance for the development of these methods, with a focus on the research that my combined experimental and molecular simulation groups have conducted over the past decade to address these issues. These critical issues include the tuning of interfacial force field parameters to accurately represent the thermodynamics of interfacial behavior, adequate sampling of these types of complex molecular systems to generate results that can be comparable with experimental data, and the generation of experimental data that can be used for simulation results evaluation and validation.

Abstract
Four hundred twenty-eight high-resolution DNA-protein complexes were chosen for a bioinformatics study. Although 164 crystal structures (38% of those searched) contained no interactions, 574 discrete π-contacts between the aromatic amino acids and the DNA nucleobases or deoxyribose were identified using strict criteria, including visual inspection. The abundance and structure of the interactions were determined by unequivocally classifying the contacts as either π-π stacking, π-π T-shaped or sugar-π contacts. Three hundred forty-four nucleobase-amino acid π-π contacts (60% of all interactions identified) were identified in 175 of the crystal structures searched. Unprecedented in the literature, 230 DNA-protein sugar-π contacts (40% of all interactions identified) were identified in 137 crystal structures, which involve C-H···π and/or lone-pair···π interactions, contain any amino acid and can be classified according to sugar atoms involved. Both π-π and sugar-π interactions display a range of relative monomer orientations and therefore interaction energies (up to -50 (-70) kJ mol(-1) for neutral (charged) interactions as determined using quantum chemical calculations). In general, DNA-protein π-interactions are more prevalent than perhaps currently accepted and the role of such interactions in many biological processes may yet to be uncovered.

Abstract
Structure and dynamics of water remain a challenge. Resolving the properties of hydrogen bonding lies at the heart of this puzzle. We employ ab initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) simulations over a wide temperature range. The total simulation time was ≈ 2 ns. Both bulk water and water in the presence of a small hydrophobic molecule were simulated. We show that large-angle jumps and bond bifurcations are fundamental properties of water dynamics and that they are intimately coupled to both local density and hydrogen bond strength oscillations in scales from about 60 to a few hundred femtoseconds: Local density differences are the driving force for bond bifurcations and the consequent large-angle jumps. The jumps are intimately connected to the recently predicted hydrogen bond energy asymmetry. Our analysis also appears to confirm the existence of the so-called negativity track provided by the lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen atom to enable water rotation.

Abstract
We present and evaluate dispersion corrected Hartree-Fock (HF) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) based quantum chemical methods for organic crystal structure prediction. The necessity of correcting for missing long-range electron correlation, also known as van der Waals (vdW) interaction, is pointed out and some methodological issues such as inclusion of three-body dispersion terms are discussed. One of the most efficient and widely used methods is the semi-classical dispersion correction D3. Its applicability for the calculation of sublimation energies is investigated for the benchmark set X23 consisting of 23 small organic crystals. For PBE-D3 the mean absolute deviation (MAD) is below the estimated experimental uncertainty of 1.3 kcal/mol. For two larger π-systems, the equilibrium crystal geometry is investigated and very good agreement with experimental data is found. Since these calculations are carried out with huge plane-wave basis sets they are rather time consuming and routinely applicable only to systems with less than about 200 atoms in the unit cell. Aiming at crystal structure prediction, which involves screening of many structures, a pre-sorting with faster methods is mandatory. Small, atom-centered basis sets can speed up the computation significantly but they suffer greatly from basis set errors. We present the recently developed geometrical counterpoise correction gCP. It is a fast semi-empirical method which corrects for most of the inter- and intramolecular basis set superposition error. For HF calculations with nearly minimal basis sets, we additionally correct for short-range basis incompleteness. We combine all three terms in the HF-3c denoted scheme which performs very well for the X23 sublimation energies with an MAD of only 1.5 kcal/mol, which is close to the huge basis set DFT-D3 result.
