Cationic Surfactant Sorption to a Vermiculitic Subsoil via Hydrophobic Bonding

Attenuating toluene mobility in loess soil modified with anion-cation surfactants

Soils, subsoils, and aquifer materials can be modified with hydrophobic cationic surfactants to increase their sorption capabilities for organic contaminants. The objective of this study was to examine in detail the sorptive characteristics of the natural loess soil and the resultant organo-modified soils for aqueous-phase neutral organic compounds (NOCs) in an attempt to define the operative sorptive mechanisms. Under the laboratory conditions, a series of modified loess soils in this study were prepared by replacing the cations of loess soil with both cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br) and anionic surfactant sodium dodethylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS). Toluene was selected as an indicator to study the sorption behavior of the NOCs in loess soils. The sorption isotherms of toluene in soil samples obtained using the batch equilibration method. The results indicated that natural loess had a poor sorption capability for NOCs, and sorption isotherms of toluene appeared likely nonlinear and fit the Freundlich equation very well. When the soils were coated with large alkyl surfactants such as HDTMA-Br, sorption isotherms correspondingly became linear and the sorptive capability was prominently dependent on the quantity of hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) and SDBS added into the soils. The study could provide an essential basis on attenuation of organic contaminants in the subsurface environment.

Influence of quaternary ammonium on sorption of selected metal cations onto clinoptilolite zeolite

Clay minerals and zeolites have large cation exchange capacities, which enable them to be modified by cationic surfactant to enhance their sorption of organic and anionic contaminants. In this study, the influence of quaternary ammonium surfactants on sorption of five metal cations (Cs+, Sr+, La3+, Pb2+, and Zn2+) onto a clinoptilolite zeolite was investigated. Generally, the metal cation sorption capacity and affinity for the zeolite decreased, indicating that presorbed cationic surfactants blocked sorption sites for metal cations, as the surfactant loading on the zeolite increased. Cesium and Pb2+ sorption was affected to a small extent, indicating that selective sorption for Cs+ and specific sorption for Pb2+ play an important role in addition to cation exchange. Sorption of cationic surfactants on zeolite preloaded with different metal cations showed a strong correlation with the chain length of the surfactant tail group, while the roles of the charges and types of the metal cations were minimal. As the chain length increases, the critical micelle concentration decreases and the surfactant molecules become more hydrophobic, resulting in progressive bilayer coverage. Desorption of presorbed metal cations by cationic surfactants was strongly affected by the surfactant chain length and metal type. More metal cations, particularly Sr2+ and Zn2+, desorbed with an increase in surfactant chain length. The results, in combination with those from organic and oxyanion sorption on surfactant-modified zeolite, may be used for future surfactant modification to target sorption and desorption of a specific type of contaminant or a mixture of different types of contaminants.

The sedimentation capabilities of hexadecyltrimethylammonium-modified montmorillonites

Natural montmorillonite was modified with a quaternary ammonium compound, hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA). The sedimentation capabilities of unmodified and modified montmorillonites were then investigated. The sedimentation velocity of modified montmorillonites increased if the amounts of adsorbed HDTMA were from 0.3 to 1.0 times the cation exchange capacitity (CEC). It also emerged that the sedimentation capability of modified montmorillonites was improved and that the variously CEC-modified montmorillonites had similar sedimentation capabilities after they had sorbed organic matter from oily wastewater. Thus, modified montmorillonites (especially 0.5 CEC treatment) had good sedimentation capabilities for sorbing organic substance and can act as carriers in wastewater biotreatment.

Sorption and cosorption of organic contaminant on surfactant-modified soils

Three kinds of soils were modified with the cationic surfactants, hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) bromide and tetramethylammonium (TMA) bromide to increase their sorptive capabilities. Sorption of chlorobenzene in simulated groundwater by these soils was investigated. HDTMA-modified soil has a higher ability to sorb chlorobenzene from simulated groundwater than unmodified soil. TMA-modified soil did not show the superiority. HDTMA thus can be used to modify soil to improve its sorption capability. Cosorption of chlorobenzene in simulated groundwater in the absence or presence of nitrobenzene and dichloromethane on HDTMA-modified soil was also investigated. Nitrobenzene facilitated sorption of chlorobenzene on all HDTMA-modified soil. Dichloromethane did not influence the sorption of chlorobenzene by HDTMA-modified soil. The results suggest that HDTMA-modified soil is a highly effective sorbent for chlorobenzene and multiple organic compounds did not impede the uptake of chlorobenzene.

The Adsorption of Gemini and Conventional Surfactants onto Some Soil Solids and the Removal of 2-Naphthol by the Soil Surfaces

The adsorption of two cationic gemini surfactants, [C(n)H(2n+1) N(+)(CH(3))(2)-CH(2)CH(2)](2).2Br(-), where n=12 and 14, on limestone, sand, and clay (Na-montmorillonite) from their aqueous solution in double-distilled water and the effect of this adsorption on the removal of 2-naphthol have been studied. Compared to those of conventional cationic surfactants with similar single hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups (C(n)H(2n+1)N(+)(CH(3))(3).Br(-), where n=12 and 14), the molar adsorptions of the gemini and the conventional surfactants on Na-montmorillonite are almost identical and very close to their cation exchange capacities. On sand and limestone, the molar adsorption of the cationic gemini surfactants is much larger than that of their corresponding conventional surfactants. Adsorption studies of the pollutants onto the three kinds of solids treated by either the gemini or the conventional surfactants show that the former are both more efficient and more effective at removing 2-naphthol from the aqueous phase. On all three soil solids, the addition of KBr increases the efficiency of the adsorption of both types of cationics and for most cases increases also the maximum amount adsorbed, but decreases slightly the efficiency of removal of 2-naphthol. On limestone, the anionic gemini adsorbs with one hydrophilic group oriented toward the Ca(2+) sites on the surface and its second hydrophilic group oriented toward the aqueous phase. The conventional anionic surfactant forms a double layer. The gemini anionic is more efficient and more effective than the conventional anionic in the removal of 2-naphathol from the aqueous phase. Both anionic conventional and gemini surfactants have no adsorption on sand. The adsorption mechanisms for all the surfactants on the three soil solid surfaces are discussed. Effects of surfactants on extraction of phenanthrene in spiked sand

Problems associated with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminated site in environmental media have received increasing attention. To resolve such problems, innovative in situ methods are urgently required. This work investigated the feasibility of using surfactants to extract phenanthrene on spiked sand in a batch system. Phenanthrene was spiked into Ottawa sand to simulate contaminated soil. Six surfactants, Brij 30 (BR), Triton X-100 (TR), Tergitol NP-10 (TE), Igepal CA-720 (IG), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) were used. Adjusting the extraction time, mixing speed and surfactant concentration yielded the optimum extracting conditions. The concentration of phenanthrene was identified with HPLC. Under the experimental conditions, results indicated that those surfactants were highly promising on site remediation since the residual phenanthrene concentration was effectively reduced. The optimum operating conditions were obtained at 30 min, 125 rpm and surfactant concentrations in 4%.

Influence of modified soils on the removal of diesel fuel oil from water and the growth of oil degradation micro-organism

Three soils were modified with two kinds of cationic surfactants in order to increase their sorptive capabilities for organic contaminants. Sorption of diesel fuel oil in water by these modified soils had been investigated. Modified soils can effectively sorb diesel fuel oil from water. The sorption capability of modified soils is: HDTMA-black soil > HDTMA-yellow brown soil > HDTMA-red soil > TMA-black soil > TMA-yellow brown soil > TMA-red soil. Sorption of diesel fuel oil by natural soils and HDTMA modified soils is via partition, the sorption isotherms can be expressed by Henry equation, and logK(SOM) is 2.42-2.80, logK(HDTMA) is 3.37-3.60. Sorption isotherms of TMA modified soils can be expressed by Langmuir equation, the saturation sorption capacities are 1150 (TMA-black soil), 750 (TMA-yellow-brown soil), 171 mg/kg (TMA-red soil), respectively. A diesel fuel oil degradation micro-organism (Pseudomonas sp.) was isolated in the lab. To test the influence of the modified soils on the micro-organism, various growth curves of Pseudomonas in different conditions were drawn. Pseudomonas can grow very well with natural soils and TMA modified soils. The acclimation period of Pseudomonas is reduced. As to HDTMA modified soils, HDTMA loading amount is very important. When HDTMA loading amount is no higher than 0.5 CEC, the micro-organism can grow very well after a long acclimation period.

Adsorption of Gemini and Conventional Cationic Surfactants onto Montmorillonite and the Removal of Some Pollutants by the Clay

The adsorption of a series of gemini surfactants, [C(n)H(2n+1)N(+) (CH(3))(2)-CH(2)CH(2)](2).2Br(-), where n = 10, 12, 14, and 16, on clay (Na-montmorillonite) from their aqueous solution in 0.01 M KBr and the effect of this adsorption on the removal of 2-naphthol and 4-chlorophenol have been studied. Compared to those of conventional cationic surfactants with similar single hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups (C(n)H(2n+1)N(+)(CH(3))(3).Br(-), where n = 10, 12, 14, and 16), the molar adsorptions of the gemini and conventional surfactants are almost identical. This indicates that only one of the hydrophilic groups in the gemini molecule is adsorbed onto the clay and that the second hydrophilic is presumably oriented toward the aqueous phase, in contrast to the adsorption of the conventional surfactants, where the hydrophobic group is oriented toward the aqueous phase. Stability studies on dispersions of clay treated with the two types of surfactants confirm this. The slight increase in the moles of surfactant to values above the CEC of the clay with an increase in the carbon number of the hydrophobic chain indicates that adsorption through hydrophobic group interaction occurs in addition to the major ion exchange. Adsorption studies of the pollutants onto the clay treated by either the gemini or the conventional surfactants show that the former are both more efficient and more effective at removing the pollutants from the aqueous phase. Effects of Chain Length and Structure of Cationic Surfactants on the Adsorption onto Na-Kaolinite

The adsorption of a series of alkylammonium bromides (RR1N(CH3)2Br) with different chain lengths R and R1 on a nonswelling clay surface (sodium kaolinite) has been studied by microelectrophoresis and adsorption isotherms. An increase in the number of CH2 groups in the shorter alkyl chain of the double-chain surfactant, or the introduction of another kind of alkyl group (phenyl group), was found to have much less effect on the adsorption behavior than changing the length of the alkyl chain in the single-chain surfactants. It is inferred that the effective hydrophobicity of the shorter chains in these double-chain surfactants is reduced by their intramolecular association with the longer chain. Comparison of adsorption and micellization leads to an empirical quantitative description of the effects of alkyl chain length and structure on adsorption. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Thermodynamics of Cationic Surfactant Sorption onto Natural Clinoptilolite

Sorption enthalpies of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) as monomers and micelles and tetraethylammonium bromide (TEA) were used with surfactant, counterion, and co-ion sorption isotherms to infer the conformation, sorption mechanism, and relative stability of the sorbed surfactants on natural clinoptilolite. The average value of the sorption enthalpy was -10.38 kJ/mol for monomers, -11.98 kJ/mol for micelles, and +3.03 kJ/mol for TEA. Sorption of monomers produced a lower sorption plateau than equivalent micelle sorption (maxima 145 mmol/kg, 225 mmol/kg). Analysis of the sorption data demonstrated a change in the sorption mechanism at the external cation exchange capacity (ECEC) of clinoptilolite. Sorption data from below and above the ECEC were fit to a simple polynomial model and the Gibbs free energy of sorption (DeltaG0m) and sorption entropies were calculated. Resultant values of DeltaG0m were -9.27 and -14.38 kJ/mol for HDTMA monomers and micelles, respectively, for sorption below the ECEC, and -16.11 and -23.10 kJ/mol, respectively, for sorption above the ECEC. The value for TEA was -1.04 kJ/mol, indicating weaker sorption than for HDTMA. Monomer sorption to clinoptilolite exceeded the ECEC, even when the solution concentration was below the critical micelle concentration. Hydrophobic (tail-tail) components of DeltaG0m were the driving force for sorption of HDTMA, both below and above the ECEC. A significant kinetic effect was observed in the sorption isotherms with a period of rapid sorption followed by slow equilibration requiring 7 days to achieve steady state for HDTMA; TEA equilibration occurred within 24 h. Studies on Interaction of Dodecyltrimethylammonium Bromide with Na- and Al-Montmorillonite

The adsorption isotherms and adsorption enthalpies of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DDTMAB) on Na- and Al-montmorillonite were determined in the pH range 2-12. The basal spacings of the clays were also studied by X-ray diffraction. Interactions of DDTMAB with the two montmorillonites predominate mostly through cation exchange in the pH range studied. In the case of Na-montmorillonite, the amount of adsorption increases with pH, but adsorption enthalpy decreases with pH. For Al-montmorillonite, adsorption enthalpy exhibits nonmonotonic variation with pH, although the amount of adsorption increases with pH monotonously. The adsorption enthalpies of DDTMAB on the clays are negative. The adsorbed DDTMAB molecules in clay interlayers present a bilayer arrangement at saturation. Copyright 1997 Academic Press.
